I haven't played Dark Souls enough. I've only played Dark Souls through one time. Maybe Bloodborne. Maybe. if If I'm really like on my game, i could maybe try to speedrun it. But I have played through Metal Gear Solid as quickly as possible and done it in a relatively short amount of time. So that probably ought to be my answer. Which is why I was very excited last weekend to go to an annual event here in beautiful Minneapolis where I met up with our friend Benjamin Bertie ah recent ah Twin Cities import, Benjamin Burney, to go see a giant pencil get sharpened.

There is a giant pencil in South Minneapolis. It is it on a Lake of the Isles. It is a sculpture that was ah a wind-damaged oak re-sculpted into a 20-foot tall, 32-inch diameter number two pencil.

And on the first Saturday in June, they sharpen it. They have a giant sharpener. ah they They do a whole thing. And this year, David Reese was their professional pencil sharpener.

David Reese. A man who's ah whose television show, Going Deep, changed my life. Because it changed the way I tie my shoes. So I was very excited.

ah There was a performance from the University of of Minnesota marching band. There was a music. There were people giving out pencils, um handing them, not throwing them into the crowd, which, solid choice, because they were sharpened.

all That had like the date and of the event, great souvenirs. Did make me want to go get ah like custom pencils priced for in case we ever do something that would require that.

But what will always stick with me is that there was a speech prior to the sharpening of the pencil where they let the crowd vote on whether they would sharpen the pencil or leave it dull.

Because dull pencil, that doesn't create any problems. ah But a sharp pencil, sharp enough to pierce heaven itself, can stand against anything. And I will always remember that because I thought I was going to go live in a Batman world for a minute, but instead I lived it in a world where anime was real.

Right, yes. And that was very exciting. but I had a great time watching a giant pencil get sharpened. The the crowds were out. It was really fun. If your community has something like fun and silly that they do, do't do it! Because I did feel... i i felt nice and energized. I mean, I felt mentally nice and energized. I felt physically like I had stood outside in the sun for like two hours, and then I came home and played video games in bed.

I bought it from a thrift store, so it has someone else's initials on it, and the finger holes didn't fit when I first bought it. It was also too heavy. didn't buy

ah The new game from Yacht Club Games, the studio that made Hollow Knight. And Hollow Knight, or not Hollow Knight, sorry, Shovel Knight, different Knight. New video game from Yacht Club Games, the developers of Shovel Knight. And if you played Shovel Knight, you will know that it was basically like, what if we made DuckTales for the Nintendo, but now?

yeah yeah When I talked about how much I liked it on Blue Skies, someone told me that they ah had heard that it was like Bloodborne, which at the time I didn't really get.

Because it was really like, it's very much Zelda, specifically a Link's Awakening. In most respects. ah But as I continue playing it, I feel like that there's a little bit of Souls-like in it.

In that you have like a limited healing item. that ah you can use and you can get more of as the game progresses. And if you die without ah what is called in the game a spark, but which is essentially your lives, oh then you lose the currency that you use for leveling up and and buying items.

ah But both of those, I think, are actually like way more forgiving than they are generally in a Souls-like. Even like a like ah ah like a retro Souls-like, like a Souls-like Metroidvania or whatever.

Well, the title the title is kind of a giveaway. ah Hollowing is not a thing in in Bloodborne per se, but it is a Souls term.

ah in In the first Dark Souls, you are the hollowed. ah In this game, that refers to um you can dig underground. Oh, okay. Which is is the name of that. But yeah, I i feel like i know enough about ah Dark Souls to know about ah ah that aspect of it.

okay It's very much like I described it as being very post-Tunic ah and oh post... Anyway, I described it as being very post-Tunic in that like pretty much everything you can do in the game, you can do at the start of the game.

Like, there's sub-weapons, and there's items that you get that'll make certain things easier, and that are necessary for particular puzzles.

But most of the things that you get just make it either easier to do something, or possible to do it in a slightly different way. you thinking it Were you thinking of Animal Well? Animal Well, yes, thank you. yeah ah there is a like There is sort of a prescribed order of how of where you should go to do things, and you know there's really no reason to not follow that. But I did some some mild... oh not I mean, not really sequence breaking, because again, it's very open-worldy, but I think I did things out of the prescribed order late in the game.

um But a lot of the like puzzles and... little bits and pieces that make it really interesting and fun make sense.

Like, that they they follow a logic that the game has, and it's just really, really good and fun to play. oh I loved it. I think it's probably my oh favorite game of the year, and it may even ah be my favorite game of the past two years that in which you spend bones as currency.
