Host Michael Grahamslaw reflects on Newcastle United’s 2–1 defeat to Brighton at the Amex Stadium — a familiar story on the south coast.

Despite a bright start and a fine equaliser from Nick Woltamade, the Magpies were undone by two clinical finishes from Danny Welbeck, leaving Eddie Howe’s side still searching for their first win at Brighton since 2017.

Michael analyses the key moments, tactical issues, standout performers, and what this result means ahead of Tuesday’s European clash with Benfica.

Analysis of Newcastle's Defeat at Amex

Global Sports Podcast Network
Alright lads, lasses and everybody in between, it's Michael Grimesow here from the Daily Newcastle podcast and we're here talk about Newcastle United's most recent trip to the Amex Stadium, which, shock, ended in a 2-1 defeat for Newcastle United.
00:00:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
We never do well at the Amex, so yeah, not really a surprise, but a little disappointing. There were absolutely no changes in the team from our game before the international break, but there was a return to the bench for Jacob Ramsey,
00:00:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
which was the only real talking point and going into the game. So just going to get straight into it on that side.

Brighton's Dominance and Newcastle's Struggle

00:00:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
To be honest, for the first 10 minutes, Newcastle were the better team. um Brighton went forward on the right-hand side about twice. In the first 10 minutes, it was the only time they got forward.
00:01:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
We looked really edgy, really nervous about Minte's pace, and he would go on to... really have a big impact during the game. I don't think Dan Byrne or Sven Botman managed to get a handle on him during the game. He had a fantastic game. But 10 minutes was all Newcastle really got in that first half.
00:01:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Created one chance through Bruno Gamares. Half volley went slightly wide. um But then it was all Brighton for the first half. They grew into the game multiple occasions. Jorginho Rudder.
00:01:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah runs him um from midfield in between the lines, gets a chance at goal. First one goes straight at Nick Pope. Easy shot from save and you think, right, we're going to learn from that. No, the exact same happens ah just a few minutes later and Nick Pope has to pull off a really good save down to his left.
00:01:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Newcastle in the first half couldn't get out their own half. um It did feel more like team both sides were cancelling each other out. But Brighton were definitely getting the better of it with a high press and winning that midfield battle.
00:02:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Neither team really did enough for the vast majority of the first half. But Brighton, they did take the lead through um Danny Welbeck about 40 minutes in.

First Half Disappointment for Newcastle

00:02:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
But before that, they were forced into a change when Diogo Gomez came off for Maxim de Kuyper.
00:02:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Gomez had slipped while trying to defend. Played on for another 10 minutes or so, but it was clear he wasn't really going to be able to last. um And then Brighton took the lead, but was coming, to be honest.
00:02:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
It comes from a long ball from the goalkeeper. Minte somehow wins an aerial duel against Dan Byrne. It drops to Byrne's feet. um Minte then wins it back, and Brighton basically play it back. Newcastle refuse to press.
00:02:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I've seen more pressing in the under-7s games, which is absolutely mental. um Brighton plays straight through the middle, to be honest.
00:03:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Centre-back to centre-attacking midfielder, then to striker. First to Rudder, then to Welbeck. He gets through on goal. It's bit of a mistake from Sven Bottmann, who loses his man. um But Malik Chau is no angel in the the scenario either.
00:03:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Neither of them really marking a player. It was like zonal marking. um from a corner in the Arsene Wenger days. ah Pointless and you know just taking a position for the sake of taking a position, it felt like.
00:03:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Welbeck had the easiest goal of his life, just chipped it over Nick Pope. Scores against Newcastle once again. um ah He only has five goals against us, believe it or not.

Impact of Half-Time Changes on Newcastle's Play

00:03:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
It feels like he's got 15. It was really terrible from Newcastle, but it was a well-worked move from Brighton who played in between the centre midfielders and the centre defenders of Newcastle very well.
00:03:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
I will say when the first 10 minutes were promising, the final 40 of the half were closer to pathetic in reality.
00:04:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was a really disappointing first half from Newcastle. and ended It ended a bit of a higher note. um Our best chance of the game, a beautiful ball in from Bruno Gamares.
00:04:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Nick Valtomarra just misjudged his header a little bit. He's leaning back a little and his header goes straight over the bar. um So for the first half, Newcastle, not a lot happened.
00:04:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
was a very edgy game, played very much in the middle of the park. Danny Welbeck scored once again. We missed a good chance at the end. um But Newcastle went in at the Amex without a goal in the first half and they've only managed to do actually score at the Amex in the first half once since 1991. And the only reason I'm saying 1991 is because I couldn't find when the goals were for the two to draw.
00:04:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
um in that year. I'd seen that we hadn't done it in the 4-2 that year, but I can't imagine we scored four second-half goals that year. So, yeah, it was Ayose Perez scoring for Rafael Benitez as Newcastle United.
00:05:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And, well, Ayose Perez, I'll mention him later as well. But six years later, it was another goalless first half for Newcastle. Consistency? But probably not the consistency you want.

Second Half Struggles and Missed Opportunities

00:05:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
If there is consistency that you want, and reliability, should I say, yeah got it's got to be Bionique.
00:06:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Excellent stuff. So you'll notice we took the ah the advert a little bit earlier because everything seemed to happen in the second half. At half time, we took off Joe Linton and Anthony Alanga for Lewis Miley and Jacob Murphy.
00:06:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
And to be honest, it was probably for the best because Anthony Alanga played like a Swedish reserve um and he was treated like that by John Dahl Thomason. um If he was going to play like that, then it's probably deserved. um And then Joe Linton, well, Joe Linton kind of played like someone who had just played two friend, meaningless friendly games in Asia, just because why not?
00:06:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, no excuses. um Brighton have a ah plethora of players from South America who all had to do a similar tour. So no excuses, just something that's a little bit annoying.
00:06:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I'm sure Brighton fans will agree with that as well. um We did have a half chance at the start of the half, but it did very much start... how it finished. Dan Byrne fired in a cross from left-back for Malik Chow, just a little bit late sliding in and couldn't really connect on the ball, but Brighton should have made it 2-0 long before they got their second.
00:07:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Minte, the most prominent move of the half, came from him. He left Dan Byrne flopping on the floor like a kipper. um And we were very lucky because if he fires the ball across goal.
00:07:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
A few poor touches, i think one's from Welbeck, one's from Rudder. um And thankfully... Our defenders show the energy to get back, show the passion to get back. Very good from the, I think it was Tonali, Bottman and a couple of others.
00:07:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the force shot from a, not a poor position, but a much more difficult position. And eventually it goes, it's a shot off target.

Late Game Drama and Brighton's Victory

00:07:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Pope then makes a strong save from the substitute, Maxim de Kuiper, a couple of minutes later.
00:07:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I'll be honest, it felt like it was only going to go one way for about 10 minutes of the second half. And then... don't really know what something just kind of changed um there was no real substitute in this time there was no ah difference in mentality for me the team it just kind of looked like brighton's press wasn't as vigorous as what it it had been at the start of the the second half and newcastle managed to get on the ball a little bit more start using bruno gamares a bit better and start using lewis miley in the center of midfield um
00:08:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Actually, one thing before that, one thing that we saw so many times in this game was players just refusing to take a shot. And the one that sort of comes to my mind the most, I think it was before Newcastle really started getting back into the game, was Ayari, who got the ball in a good position to shoot.
00:08:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
um and it's And it's unfortunately, i don't think you'll see the highlight, so I can only reference it to a goal I've seen today, and that's the Sunderland goal from Mukiyele.
00:08:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
um it's a very similar sort of position and ayari just passes it to the side when he's got a great chance to shoot on goal and unfortunately our local uh i don't they're not rivals our neighbors uh so exactly what can happen when you just take a shot risk it um which both sides were too scared to do today in our game um It was feeling like every Newcastle touch in the final third was a poor one and Brighton was stronger, fitter and better.
00:09:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
But then, as I mentioned, everything just kind of changed when Newcastle were able to get Bruno and Lewis Miley into the game a little bit more. ah It starts with Bruno firing a ball from the halfway line just over the top of the centre-backs.
00:09:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah For Jacob Murphy run on to, it's a great run from Murphy, but his first touch is just a little bit lacking. Verbruggen comes out to try and close the distance. The ball's behind Jacob and Murphy a bit. He just tries a delicate little um flick over the goalkeeper, tries to lob him, and unfortunately just gets it all wrong.
00:09:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
and But it was a very good chance for a better first touch, and that's From then... um from then um Actually, our first corner of the game was one that was quite interesting as well because the ball comes in for Brogan, completely misses it, and it just sums up our game in the first 60 minutes of there's literally no goalkeeper there.
00:10:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
The ball comes in behind and it's it is a difficult chance for Dan Burn. I am being a little bit harsh. um You don't expect a goalkeeper to just miss the ball completely. but the ball just bounces off Dan Byrne and goes into the hands of Verbrugge. So it's ah it's a shame because if he gets a touch on that ball, even if he just puts his knee out, um because I think it hits off the high, but it just bounces off it, if he has a second quicker react...
00:10:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
um it's 1-1 again. Newcastle was starting to create all the chances, starting to turn the wheels. And we made two changes in the second half that I thought actually made us a bit stronger. When Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali came off for Harvey Barnes and Jacob Ramsey, making his first appearance back from injury was great to see.
00:11:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Brighton also brought off Carlos Beliba and Jorginho Ruta for the young lads Simas and of the old lad James Milner, who it's good to see him back on the pitch again, ah given his relations to Newcastle.
00:11:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hope he gets that appearance record, but... I would have rather he didn't get the three points today, if I'm honest. But Newcastle continued with a good chances. Bruno, fantastic tenacity ah to hold off two or three challenges.
00:11:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's dragged to the floor in the box. He gets up and still manages to get a shot away. And he forces Verbruggen into an excellent save. um And in the aftermath of the save...
00:11:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
think Dan Byrne is there trying to get in. It hits off the arm of, I believe it's Ayari. um And I'll be honest, I'm glad it wasn't a handball, even though we have seen them given so many times this season.
00:12:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And it's hard to say you're glad an effort wasn't a handball because you've lost the game. um But I've seen it a few times this season where that's been given. And if we're going to give that, the game's gone.
00:12:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, we use that term a bit too much, but the game's gone. um But I can still say it wouldn't have impacted the game too much because, like, a minute later, it was Big Nick Vortemar who levelled the game with an absolutely excellent finish.
00:12:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's absolutely brilliant work from Lewis Miley and Bruno Gomares in the centre of the pitch. I mean, I think Murphy's involved in it as well. um Those two play one, two, get it out to Murphy.
00:12:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Miley runs into the box from deep, lot like what Sean Longstaff used to do um when he was at his peak. Or should i say peak form for us?
00:12:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
um He knocks it into Miley. Miley beautifully just cuts it across the box. And Volta Marder flicks the ball like Iose Perez in his prime. ah The Tottenham one in particular stands out for me, but maybe even the Barnsley one.
00:13:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And it equalises for Newcastle. It's an excellent finish. And he scores all types goals, this lad. We just don't get him involved in the game enough, unfortunately. But from that point, it looked like it was all Newcastle United.
00:13:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
We were the better team for the last, I think from the 60th minute. No, yeah, from the 60th minute to the 83rd minute. We were probably flawless, fantastic during that period, but just terrible in the first half.
00:13:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then we shut off for about 30 seconds after that. um It's a great block. Ayari puts... In fact, just before the the Brighton goal, we could have made it 2-0. Ayari, who I'm just about to mention for a pass as well, he...
00:14:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
basically puts in an incredible block to stop Bruno Guimara's firing in into an empty net from a throw-in. And then about a minute later, ah he plays a delightful through ball through to Weaver.
00:14:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Brilliant tackle from Dan Bairn to stop Weaver from getting his so ah challenge or he shot away. sorry um And then, wouldn't you know it, Danny Welbeck runs onto the ball.
00:14:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
And... If you don't laugh, you'll cry because the least clinical player in football has turned into CR7 against Newcastle United once again.
00:14:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
um He runs onto the ball on the edge of the box and just nestles it into the corner like a veteran clinical striker. um It was a brilliant goal from him. it's his last goal ah he's ah It's his last action of the game, should I say.
00:14:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Newcastle level for just eight minutes. Newcastle had a go for it. Asula came on for Bruno. um I will say Bruno was probably best player for Newcastle in the second half.
00:15:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Jacob Murphy also changed the game for us. and Those two had some excellent performances. um Following that, we had some half chances. ah Sometimes where it was unlucky the ball didn't fall to us, but it finished two one to Brighton, and for Newcastle,
00:15:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
It is the third sucker punch defeat of the season. Barcelona felt like you know we were just well beaten. They were the better side. But Arsenal, Liverpool and now Brighton, you sort of feel like we were the better team Yeah.
00:15:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
and we've all bought first half we really weren't good enough and i think the first half performances alone is enough to say that newcastle didn't deserve anything from the game because first half we were absolutely terrible second very good we got back into well and we've ultimately lost because of that first half performance But that's all from us here at the Daily Newcastle.
00:15:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Really short one today because we're goingnna have a full review of the game in tomorrow's episode. It's a difficult one to take. I'm not happy about it whatsoever. And I'm sure there's many, many people who aren't either. But it's it was a good second-half performance, a bad first-half performance.
00:16:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Doesn't really get any easier with Benfica on Tuesday. But get a solid win against Benfica. And I think people probably forget ah this game. It was really narrow. We don't really get anything against Brighton at the Amex.
00:16:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
So is it really points dropped? Of course it is. But got to try and look at it with a good head. Anyways, we'll see you tomorrow.
00:16:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
I hate Danny Welbeck.
