Introduction and Host's Perspective

00:00:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Newcastle. My name's Ian Mackay, I'm your host tonight. And tonight we've got a Newcastle against Forest crossover preview and I'm joined by Marley Gillett, Nottingen Forest fan extraordinaire, who is actually travelling to the game tomorrow, which is so which is a real big plus.
00:00:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Because I can't go, I'll be watching on the telly Marley. How are you and thanks for joining

Journey and Game Anticipations

us.
00:00:41
Marley-Forest
I am good, dreading the four, five hour journey north and then back south again tomorrow, which will be even worse if we fail to pick up any points. But hopefully we get an entertaining game at least.
00:00:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, and we did have a look at those. Michael had a look at the stats, and I think there's only there's only one occasion in the last six games between us where both teams have failed to score. um So that's goals at either end.
00:01:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
4-3 last year, you couldn't complain, even though you went home with no points. And you're probably you probably travelled home, but you probably flew home yourself without the coach the year before when you won 3-1. But anyway, look, that is for the game tomorrow.

Nottingham Forest's Recent Issues

00:01:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we are, of course, going to come and look on teams and selections and predictions and all the rest of it.
00:01:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
However, I think it's only right, and I think you have been denied your platform, to let the public know what the hell is going on at Forest.
00:01:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Finished the season with the European campaign to have this year. Seemed to strengthen really well in the transfer market. Three up at half-time in the first game when you stuffed Brentford and then Nuno got sacked and Postacoglu's come in and not much notton but to write home about.
00:02:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Losing at home to Mitchell and in the first Europa League game on Thursday, which was a surprise result. Anyway, tell us, Marley, what the hell is going on up there?
00:02:19
Marley-Forest
Well, Nuno had a falling out with people behind the scenes, the manager and Edu, who we poached from Arsenal to fill a role, which I'm not entirely sure what the role is, but it's the role, about transfers and...
00:02:35
Marley-Forest
What? ah Sorry, something random just opened up on a screen and closed again. Not had that one before. um Yeah, he I think he wanted Adama Traore, who Edu blocked him signing, and Edu pushed for the signing of Douglas Luiz, who Nuno didn't want.
00:02:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
no
00:02:51
Marley-Forest
And all that's kind of accumulated in Nuno making statements in the press, which Marinakis wasn't too pleased about and ended up sacking him off the back of.
00:03:02
Marley-Forest
And Poster Coglu's coming in. It's a complete change of style for one, which mid-season is an awful idea. Awful idea. And it's just not working. We look dire.
00:03:15
Marley-Forest
Yes, we're putting some all right football together, but we don't look like scoring. We don't even look like penetrating the back line. We're trying to play through the middle when it's not on, yet the wingers are wide open.
00:03:27
Marley-Forest
It just doesn't look like it's clicking. It doesn't look like we're going to get anywhere with it. And overall, the fans aren't happy. But the thing that annoys me is people always say Nuno was unfairly sacked.
00:03:39
Marley-Forest
No, he spoke his way out of a job, saying things he knew he shouldn't have said.
00:03:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do
00:03:44
Marley-Forest
And if anything, he wanted to get sacked.

Challenges with Directors of Football

00:03:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
you think that he's pushed self-destruct button because he can see the writing on the wall that he's not going to get his own way anymore and Edu is running the show?
00:03:57
Marley-Forest
Yeah, I do.
00:03:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
which is a shame. We've had a difficult time with directors of football since we've had directors of football.
00:04:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Dan Ashworth being poached by Man United and spending more time in his garden than he did, working for either Newcastle or Manchester United, followed by Paul Mitchell, who seemed to have a fetish about Mark Gahey and nothing else, and left.
00:04:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
left Left have two days into Eddie Howe's summer holiday to leave us with no um with no director of football in the transfer market on us.
00:04:38
Marley-Forest
Wow.
00:04:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah It was him, apparently, who officially pulled the plug on offering Isaac a new contract because he still had four years of his old contract left, ah which is the root cause as to why he plays for Liverpool now and not for Newcastle.
00:04:49
Marley-Forest
wow
00:04:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, directors of football, who'd have him? Can't live with him, can't live without them, they'd say. Or or is that wives? I'm not.

Stylistic Shift Under Postacoglu

00:05:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, yeah, well, ah but but it does seem to make no sense to even somebody just watching as an interested bystander that you would try to convert the archetypal low block defend hit on super fast transition team, which was so successful last year,
00:05:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah with a with a sort of a tippy-tappy all-out attack team, which doesn't make any sense. It's encapsulated in that Nuno wanted Adamo Triore and instead ended up with Douglas Luiz, who is going to be exercising the degree of control in midfield and all the rest of it.
00:05:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, is there anybody that is thinking this is a good thing?
00:05:54
Marley-Forest
um I think there's and there was an air originally of optimism that we've got a manager in who's a serial winner. And because he's a serial winner, we thought maybe for once in our lifetime, we will come out of it with a trophy. But what we were ignoring is the sheer velocity of his change in style and the fact that He was arguably lucky with the squad he had and the opponents he came up against to win the trophy he won.
00:06:25
Marley-Forest
So, you know, United had a lot of brilliant results but just weren't good enough to get Odellan in the final.
00:06:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
And
00:06:33
Marley-Forest
I just don't feel like it was ever going to work. I don't feel like he was a smart appointment. I personally wanted the former German boss Joachim Löw, who won the World Cup, if we're going to go with anyone for their honours.
00:06:47
Marley-Forest
I think a lot of fans wanted to try and poach Marco Silva or Andoni or Iola. And there was a few even whispering about the optimism of trying to get Palace's manager, Oliver Glasner. So to end up with, of all people, Posta Coglu and to be going like this, it just feels feels really frustrating.
00:07:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
There was no gap, though, was there? He was appointed almost immediately. So that's all taken place before Nuno got sacked, I think. um And it looked as if Maranakis just wants the guy who's going to win in the Europa League and nothing else. be But you were telling me that they've got some sort of relationship, that they're golf buddies or something.
00:07:26
Marley-Forest
there was there were pictures um quite a while ago back when steve cooper was the nottingham forest steve cooper a holiday villa in greece with a forest board member and anj posta koglu uh in the swimming pool plus the fact that maranakis gave an award presented award to Postacoglu last season, there is an air of possibility or probability that there is a friendship between the two of them.
00:07:57
Marley-Forest
And that could be a large part of the reason he's been appointed.............
00:08:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Which, of course, is not necessarily a bad thing. If the manager and the owner are getting on really well, that actually should be a positive thing. but But it would seem strange for the owner to appoint somebody who he knows is going to and It's ridiculous. It's like forming a string quartet with a whole load of woodwind musicians.
00:08:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's so far different.

Spotlight on New Players

00:08:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Anyway, you did strengthen in the transfer market. Have any of these new new players that you have had a chance to impress you at all? I mean, I've loved watching Ndoy. He looks an exciting player.
00:08:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
He looks like you're not going to miss Alanga at all.
00:08:43
Marley-Forest
Dan Endoy looks like he's going to be exceptional once he's properly settled into English football. I think you can see heirs of him needing to settle a bit more, but other than that, he does look very good.
00:08:54
Marley-Forest
Delain Bakwa, there's been heirs of positivity about him, but still a lot of improving to do on him. the I mean, there's been some really big disappointments, I think, that Arnaud Calimwendo was supposed to be one of the
