Okay.
00:00:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello

Introduction

00:00:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
and welcome to the Daily Newcastle. My name's Ian Mackay, I'm your host tonight.

Match Reaction: Newcastle vs Arsenal

00:00:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm joined by long-lost sister, Bickler Pringle-Adams, to further reflect, having had a night to sleep on that heartbreak, on the Newcastle 1, Arsenal 2 result.
00:00:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm still not feeling very positive about it personally. Nicola. Nicola, first of all, tell us what you were doing whilst the match was being played and how you followed the game.
00:00:51
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Well, ah yeah, I didn't actually watch the match, so I probably shouldn't really be on this podcast, to be honest. But um I was in London. I was in London yesterday watching a West End show that was booked for my 30th birthday, which is obviously a while ago now.
00:01:05
Nicola Pringle-Adams
And that was the day we decided to choose on of all the days. I didn't do my research properly.
00:01:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, you couldn't help it.
00:01:11
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Clearly.
00:01:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
i mean, you could have been...
00:01:12
Nicola Pringle-Adams
No.
00:01:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
you had done your research, this would have been on as a Saturday because it's only later on that they switch it for but the TV. So, I don't blame you for that.
00:01:20
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Exactly.
00:01:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm just trying to think of what West End show would have been appropriate for for the Newcastle 1, Arsenal 2. It wasn't Les Miserables, was it?
00:01:31
Nicola Pringle-Adams
No, I did go to watch Wicked.
00:01:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, that is appropriate because because scoring...
00:01:37
Nicola Pringle-Adams
It's appropriate.
00:01:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because the man who ought to have been sent off scoring the winner in the 96th minute is pretty wicked. It's cruel. And it was a cruel result.
00:01:47
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah.
00:01:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But no let's let's talk about that later.

Debating Player Positions and Strategies

00:01:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
First of all, what did you think of how we lined up? 4-3-3, I think.
00:02:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
But with big bad Dan Byrne at left back against Saka. Which I'm sure... That's like putting matter and anti-matter together and ought to be avoided at all costs for fear of destroying the universe.
00:02:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
But that's what I think. What do you think?
00:02:21
Nicola Pringle-Adams
um I do want to know the thought not that there's anything wrong with Danburn so let me just let me just clarify that before people stop start jumping down our throats on on the socials um but we have established that Danburn is obviously better at centre-back than what he is at a left-back.
00:02:37
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I want to understand the thought process behind that, because obviously Lewis Hall wasn't even on the bench, was he, as far as I'm aware, if I followed correctly. So it is he is he poorly?
00:02:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Correct.
00:02:47
Nicola Pringle-Adams
is it Has it come out? is he Is he injured? Has it come out as to what's happened with Lewis?
00:02:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, eddie Eddie was asked after the game why Lewis Hall wasn't on the bench.
00:02:51
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I don't understand.
00:02:57
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Right.
00:02:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
And um without any spoilers for part three, i think ah Lewis Hall was having his minutes managed. So they weren't going to let him play any minutes in this game, presumably because he's going to start on Wednesday against...
00:03:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Union Saint-Gilois of Belgium. USG. Yes. I think, I think that's, I think that was the reasoning behind it, but it still seemed odd that maybe he just had to include Big Dan Byrne because he's played really, really well, but he wants Chow when he wants Botman as well, because really that should have been Tino at left back and Trippier at right back.
00:03:28
Nicola Pringle-Adams
yeah
00:03:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think, um,
00:03:41
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah. Yeah, I agree. um So that that was a decision that confused me. I've got to be honest.
00:03:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
He did.
00:03:47
Nicola Pringle-Adams
um Delighted to see Chau have a start again. um I really like him. um And I actually do think he had a a decent game yesterday, other than maybe one mistake.
00:03:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
he did
00:03:58
Nicola Pringle-Adams
um But other than that, I do think he had a really great game. um Middle three... ah You can never complain when you've got a Bruno Tonali and Joey Lillett in line, a start in Kenya. um Fine. And then obviously we had um Mr. Gordon.
00:04:14
Nicola Pringle-Adams
but Is that his first game back for Premier League since his suspension?
00:04:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's his first game back in the after suspension, yeah.
00:04:20
Nicola Pringle-Adams
but
00:04:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
He played against Bradford midweek and he played against Barcelona in the Champions League, but that's his first Premier League match back.
00:04:20
Nicola Pringle-Adams
For Premier League, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
00:04:24
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah.
00:04:27
Nicola Pringle-Adams
First Premier, yeah, so yeah, that's that's fine. So I was happy to see him back. Obviously, we've got Jacob Murphy again on the right and then Volta Mardy up front in the middle. So um overall, i didn't I wasn't really disheartened by the line-up. I thought it was one of our strongest. um I just think what we've just spoke about there, the only decision that I was questioning was Lewis Hall missing from the bench.
00:04:51
Nicola Pringle-Adams
um Obviously, Dan Byrne come in because the obvious choice would have been, like you say, Tino slotting at left back and then Trippier coming on. um So that baffled me. And then what else was I going to say on the lineup? There was something else on the lineup that I was clearing about.
00:05:08
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I can't remember now. But yeah, overall, I thought we looked good. Hmm.
00:05:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, I i think, i'm i'm just this has just dawned on me now. it may be that we did play five at the back for, ah for when Arsenal were in possession because Anthony Gordon funneled back

Analyzing Arsenal's Tactics

00:05:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
and doubled up on Saka with Dan Byrne quite a lot in that first half.
00:05:28
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah.
00:05:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I wonder if Gordon was, uh, almost a wing back, um, for part of, part of the game.
00:05:39
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah.
00:05:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, And if that's the case, that's why i think we didn't start very quickly. We didn't press the way we've always pressed. We didn't put Rhea under the pressure, which he always folds under and gives a goal away for.
00:05:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that might be because Gordon's always looking backwards rather than trying to push forwards. He did a lot of running, but we didn't see him as much of an attacking force in that first half.
00:06:06
Nicola Pringle-Adams
No. I described the game to my friend as I don't think we did too much wrong, but I also didn't don't think we did too much right.
00:06:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
So yeah, I
00:06:16
Nicola Pringle-Adams
um There just wasn't a lot going on in what normally is a really exciting fixture.
00:06:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:06:23
Nicola Pringle-Adams
um And obviously, it we all both teams scored and obviously we know what happened at the end, which I'm sure we're going to talk about. But Arsenal has become a fixture that you you get really excited for. But I actually thought when I watched the highlights, obviously this morning, because I didn't watch it yesterday, and when I was listening, we didn't create much, we didn't do much, but we also didn't do too much wrong. um It's hard to explain properly, but I didn't think we played overall bad, but i also don't think we played like we've played against them before.
00:06:52
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Obviously, we've played against, we've, you know, beat them in our last four appearances with them. what I mean So bit disappointing.
00:06:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Well, I think, well, part of that, I think, is that previously when we've played them,
00:07:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
and spoiler warning, tune out for a minute or two if you don't want me to pray hear me praise Arsenal. But I think we have pressed hard and... frustrated them and just waited for them to do some sort to make an error, to give the ball up, to allow us to hit them on the break.
00:07:19
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah. Yeah, true. Yep.
00:07:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they've done that fairly regularly, um which is why we won with 30% possession.
00:07:25
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Mm.
00:07:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
We won 2-0 at their place. With 31% possession, we won 2-0 at our place in the Caramo semi-final, both legs. and But Arsenal were really good.
00:07:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
They didn't give up possession
00:07:41
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Very.
00:07:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
They didn't look frustrated. i think they've got a game changer in Eberice Eze, who we know is fabulous, but it looks like he's settled straight into playing in number 10 role for Arsenal, which they didn't have before.
00:07:54
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah.
00:08:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Jochores meant that we couldn't press out of the Leclerc line as much as we had done because there's a big centre forward to keep an eye on, whereas they didn't normally play with that.
00:08:14
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Nope.
00:08:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
So i think um I think, and it's about time it happened, actually.
00:08:16
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah, a lot of new players in that squad, isn't there?
00:08:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Arteta might have out-tacticked Eddie Howe there, um which fair play to
00:08:20
Nicola Pringle-Adams
couple of new players in that squad.
00:08:27
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Hmm. Yeah.
00:08:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we we hung in there. But let's not get into the game until part two. We're going to talk about it in part two. There's plenty to do with that. I'm going to break a bit early now.
00:08:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
And...
00:08:41
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah, do it. Treat yourself.
00:08:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
And let's have, let's have, let's have bionic.
00:09:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we're back.
00:09:27
Nicola Pringle-Adams
We're back.
00:09:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Part two.

Key Moments and Saves

00:09:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
The game itself. So yeah, I thought Arsenal started really well. um I thought we were defending manfully as well. However, it didn't stop them from carving chance after chance out.
00:09:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it was a one-man wall in goal that was keeping us at 0-0.
00:09:42
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Mm-hmm.
00:09:46
Nicola Pringle-Adams
So good. Yep.
00:09:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nick Pope made a brilliant save to push one round the post.
00:09:52
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Mm-hmm.
00:09:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:09:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
10 minutes later, he was, say, flying to the right to push an Eze drive around the other post. and I thought Nick Pope kept us in it for sure. He played really, really well.
00:10:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's just a shame he's getting the blame for giving the ball away at the end, which is very harsh.
00:10:07
Nicola Pringle-Adams
what he did at the end.
00:10:10
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah.
00:10:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, let's face it, he hadn't done that, but hadn't made the saves. We'd have lost 6-1.
00:10:17
Nicola Pringle-Adams
So true. So true.
00:10:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Rather rather against the run of play we yeah We took the lead with a really nicely worked corner. It makes you wonder why they don't try that more often. It seemed fairly simple.
00:10:29
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I know.
00:10:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Short corner, Tonali gets an angle, beautiful curling ball in, 6'6", big nick, out jumps Gabriel, who were falls to the ground like a house of cards.
00:10:38
Nicola Pringle-Adams
both
00:10:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
um which Great goal Volta Marder. right great goal from voltimado um his second header for Newcastle, and he only scored one all of last season when he played for Stuttgart. So, you know, we're using him, but but not in the not in the way that Stuttgart used him yet.
00:10:55
Nicola Pringle-Adams
so I think we're onto something here. Yeah.
00:11:01
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Hmm.
00:11:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And have we had a little bit of a head of steam in that first half, I thought. we We sort of came more into it. and Once we got 1-0, we could have really done with a second goal.
00:11:14
Nicola Pringle-Adams
yep I always think that though when we go one up
00:11:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm not sure that i'm not sure that we I'm not sure that we had very many chances which were clear cut.
00:11:24
Nicola Pringle-Adams
no I am I always say well I dont think most people say it but when we're one nil up um I always worry a lot because we tend to have a bit of a ah habit of then slowing the game right down and sort of sometimes losing the intensity that we're known for and you know
00:11:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um,
00:11:42
Nicola Pringle-Adams
ah the new cast we learn to love and come to love and and sometimes that happens but what I'll say is that um Volta Mata chance was probably the only clear chance that we really really had um I don't think it looked like we were going to score again if that makes sense um
00:12:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, we had, de at the start of the second half, I thought we definitely started the second half better than we started the first half.
00:12:09
Nicola Pringle-Adams
the first
00:12:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Part of that might have been that Arsenal must have had the wind knocked out of them by us taking the lead after they'd had so many chances.
00:12:18
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah, yeah, they did.
00:12:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they did go into their shell a little bit. There was one header from Timber, which, again, Pope pushed around the post. Terrible header.
00:12:25
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Hmm.
00:12:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
They should have been buried. But it wasn't headed very hard, and Pope got down for it another good save. and But yeah, in that first 10 minutes of the second half, Valtimato went through.
00:12:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
i mean, he was offside, I think. He wouldn't have counted, but he hit the bar hit the bar with a toe poke.
00:12:39
Nicola Pringle-Adams
He was, yeah.
00:12:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then Gordon did do a very good run round the outside and played a ball right along the six-yard line.
00:12:50
Nicola Pringle-Adams
He
00:12:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nobody keeping up with play to see Osula score a goal like that against Bradford coming in at the far post but ah when Barnes did it for him.
00:12:58
Nicola Pringle-Adams
scored two goals against Bradford. Can't believe it.
00:13:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, um unfortunately, that was it then. And and ah i think to get the order right, we then made some substitutions.
00:13:12
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Hmm.
00:13:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Rolto Marder came off. Probably that means he is going to play on Wednesday. I think he has to anyway.
00:13:18
Nicola Pringle-Adams
He'll definitely play on Wednesday.
00:13:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
So they're managing his minutes for him.
00:13:19
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah.
00:13:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
And...
00:13:24
Nicola Pringle-Adams
But then that again makes me question, we're managing Volta Mardy's minutes, right, but he still started.
00:13:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:13:30
Nicola Pringle-Adams
So why is Lewis Hall not even on the bench?
00:13:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
he has
00:13:33
Nicola Pringle-Adams
If we're managing his minutes.
00:13:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
because Lewis Hall is
00:13:35
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Is that a stupid question?

Injury Impact and Late-Game Events

00:13:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
because lewis hall played the whole of the Bradford game and is an injury.
00:13:43
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah. I know.
00:13:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I don't know.
00:13:47
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah, know.
00:13:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
i mean, you know, this Bunce fella who's doing fitness, etc., really successfully, if you compare the injury rate last year to the year before, and if that's all down to managing minutes...
00:13:59
Nicola Pringle-Adams
It's very true.
00:14:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
then you've got to listen to him, haven't you?
00:14:04
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah.
00:14:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it's a shame that Lewis Hall wasn't on the bench to come on for the last half an hour when Tino got really sidely snidely kicked by Saliba, I think it was, when there was no chance of Saliba winning that.
00:14:05
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah, suppose. What do I know?
00:14:14
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Oh.
00:14:17
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Mm. Yeah.
00:14:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
He just got pushed when he was in the air. um And I think he got kicked as well as landing awkwardly and because he was holding his knee before he hit the ground. So...
00:14:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, not even a free kick given, I don't think.
00:14:34
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Poor Tina.
00:14:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah But it did look bad. And we haven't we're we're doing research every couple of minutes to see if there's any news about the scan that he went for today.
00:14:45
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah, nothing's come out yet.
00:14:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we don't have that yet.
00:14:47
Nicola Pringle-Adams
No.
00:14:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:14:48
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I really hope for his sake it's not on ACL, but I really have a feeling it's going to be.
00:14:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, yeah, he's done one already, hasn't he? He took a year to come back from that at Southampton.
00:14:57
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah.
00:15:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
But he hasn't looked... injury prone since he came to us. So, you know, hopefully, hopefully it's not as bad as it as it looks.
00:15:06
Nicola Pringle-Adams
No.
00:15:11
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah. I feel really gutted for him, though, because obviously in that World Cup year...
00:15:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:15:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know it's a shame if it is.
00:15:17
Nicola Pringle-Adams
um I feel really sad for him.
00:15:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
that
00:15:19
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I really hope for his sake, I'm like manifesting it's not an ACL injury and he has a quick recovery, whatever it may be. um ah But I'm really gutted for him. I feel really sad because you don't want to see any player go down like that, do you? and Particularly the way he was crying as well. It's not nice to see.
00:15:38
Nicola Pringle-Adams
And it's never nice to see a player stretch it off from the game either. So, yeah, I really, really hope for his sake it's not. anything too serious um I'm gutted for him I actually really am really gutted for him
00:15:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, it it was also the start, I think, of our downfall because we then had to... We brought Jamal LaSalle on for him, I think, um who slotted into a back...
00:16:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
three centre-halves with Dan Burnett left-back.
00:16:06
Nicola Pringle-Adams
yeah yeah yeah you had yeah yeah
00:16:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think trips had come on by then. um And so we're playing 5-3-2. two with There was one, before Murphy went off, by the way, there was one through ball where Murphy raced away and, you know, the Arsenal defence was nowhere to be seen.
00:16:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
This is what we were playing for, sitting off to hit them on the break.
00:16:27
Nicola Pringle-Adams
ah
00:16:31
Nicola Pringle-Adams
my
00:16:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Jacob Murphy did. And it was actually, and this is why he's £100 million pound player still, it was actually Declan Rice that ran all of the way back and was able to snuff out that danger because if he hadn't, I think Murphy, even Murphy would have been able to put the ball in, which was a shame.
00:16:38
Nicola Pringle-Adams
True.
00:16:41
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah.
00:16:49
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah.
00:16:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it was one of the few moments in the last half hour where it looked like we might have a chance of scoring because Arsenal just, we stepped off, um We stepped off and we were trying to hit them on the break, but we never got the ball to be able to do that.
00:17:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
And there was a horrible, horrible sense of inevitability that the more corners you give away to Arsenal, the more opportunities they're going to get to score.
00:17:18
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah.
00:17:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
And to be fair, it was a very good goal that they scored. great cross in and a lovely glancing header.
00:17:23
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Hmm.
00:17:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
don't think Nick Pope had much chance to get down to it. Well, one all.
00:17:29
Nicola Pringle-Adams
No.
00:17:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I could have lived with one all. I would have said Arsenal were the better team in the second half.
00:17:32
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I'd deliver the point. Yeah. Yeah, me too.
00:17:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'd have taken that. But we never mentioned, by the way, we never mentioned after our goal that Gabriel did something really weird.
00:17:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
It smacked Valtomar in the face.
00:17:44
Nicola Pringle-Adams
What was that about?
00:17:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know.
00:17:46
Nicola Pringle-Adams
What was that about?
00:17:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
but don't know.
00:17:48
Nicola Pringle-Adams
And why didn't he get sent off that?
00:17:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Valtomar went and told the referee. I don't know. Valtomar went and told the referee. VAR should have looked at it. If they do, They'll see him raise his arm and push it in his face. So he should have been off the pitch, which is why...
00:18:01
Nicola Pringle-Adams
So I didn't actually see, obviously, this happen. And then when I was catching up this morning, I was like, hang on a second. I hate to sound like a crybaby because this is what Arsenal fans do.
00:18:12
Nicola Pringle-Adams
But I thought, surely that, that warrants some sort of punishment. ah that was That was like a ah moment of craziness.
00:18:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
even got booked. i don't think he even got booked.
00:18:24
Nicola Pringle-Adams
No.
00:18:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um...
00:18:25
Nicola Pringle-Adams
None
00:18:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, so he's still on. Blimmin' Odegaard and Martinelli come on as substitutes.
00:18:29
Nicola Pringle-Adams
the handball.
00:18:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, well, I'm not talking about the penalties because I agree with the referee's decision when Nick Popes made that save with his foot. And then he doesn't follow through.
00:18:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
His foot's planted on the ground and Jokoras falls over it. So it's just a tackle for me.
00:18:48
Nicola Pringle-Adams
no yeah that's just tackle for me but I'm on about the handball with his hand in this position natural hand position stop it
00:18:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's hit the ball first. It's tackle. I know, well... I know, but it's it's it's it's all subjective, isn't it?
00:19:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
If you've slid, you might be sliding.
00:19:01
Nicola Pringle-Adams
yeah it's just annoying me though you know yeah
00:19:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, if you went if you were sliding across the dance floor, you'd be doing that, wouldn't you?
00:19:08
Nicola Pringle-Adams
But, right, so if that was, say, um I don't know, one of us, but well I don't know, Anthony Gordon had done that, you'd just know would have been given as a penalty.
00:19:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, if it had been Liverpool, if it had been Mo Salah who'd done it against Fulham, that is a penalty.
00:19:21
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah, it's so annoying. Yeah, maybe I'm just...
00:19:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
We can't help that bias. We can't help that bias. I think i think the the technicality was that he played it with his foot first.
00:19:29
Nicola Pringle-Adams
don't know.
00:19:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
And this happened when we lost 2-0 to Arsenal too two years ago.
00:19:36
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Hmm.
00:19:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
There was a hand ball after about eight minutes and we thought we had a penalty. And then when they looked, the ball had clipped off the top of somebody's thigh and hit them in the hands. And they didn't give a penalty. They reversed the penalty decision and we lost that game 2-0.
00:19:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
So this is another one like that.
00:19:56
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Fair.
00:19:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is it Saliba who it's it's come off his foot and rolled up, but it hit his arm sticking up in the air. That's still a handball.
00:20:03
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Mm. Sit a handball.
00:20:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
We should have done that.
00:20:05
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah.
00:20:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'd have gone to, think it would have been two nil if they we'd had that. And that would have been so unjust, but then that would have just made Arteta cry again because we do tend to win in an unjust way.
00:20:09
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Mm.
00:20:14
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah, but looked at that.
00:20:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:20:17
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Mm.
00:20:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Then, and I'm just going to gloss over this. They scored a winner and it was that fellow who should have been sent off who scored it.
00:20:22
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Ugh.
00:20:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, there wasn't even enough time for us to muster very much of an attack.
00:20:29
Nicola Pringle-Adams
no
00:20:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, Arsenal won two, one.
00:20:31
Nicola Pringle-Adams
We must hold the record for giving away a game in extra time.
00:20:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
And...
00:20:39
Nicola Pringle-Adams
We have to hold the record. We are the worst for it.
00:20:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
that Certainly when it's against top four rivals at home, we must do.
00:20:45
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I cannot cope with it. ah yeah As soon as they went 1-1 and I seen the notification come through, and my partner had texted me because he's a Liverpool fan and he was raging because obviously he wanted Arsenal to lose. And I just texted him back saying the end is inevitable. I know what's happening here.
00:20:58
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Then it came through 2-1 and I thought, do you know what? I'm done.
00:21:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah, it was it was terrible. But we're not going to navel-gaze on that, no.
00:21:06
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Awful. Nope.
00:21:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's just close a
00:21:09
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Done.

Positives from the Loss

00:21:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
veil on it.
00:21:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's gone. There were positives to take from that game, if we're honest.
00:21:13
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah.
00:21:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nick Pope, in the best form he's ever been in, I think, playing for Newcastle.
00:21:15
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah.
00:21:19
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Very good.
00:21:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Chow and Botman, they look like a proper pair of centre-halves. And we think we've got Byrne and Schaar coming back.
00:21:26
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yep.
00:21:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
um we' We're all right in defence. I thought Bruno was quiet, but Joe Linton was his usual boisterous self, and Tonari was excellent all over the place.
00:21:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
um It's just up front. Are we going to have to try and scab some points from somewhere before Whisser comes in?
00:21:47
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah.
00:21:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because I think that's clearly what we're missing.
00:21:50
Nicola Pringle-Adams
We're clearly missing him. Obviously we're missing him. Yeah. and Which is a shame because he didn't even get a chance to get the ground running before he got injured. So it's a shame.
00:21:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's never trained with him yet.
00:22:00
Nicola Pringle-Adams
No, he hasn't. um So although Eddie's confirmed that he will be back, is it after the October international break? um
00:22:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:22:09
Nicola Pringle-Adams
It's still going to take, I mean, i don't know how long, but it's going to take a while to embed him into the squad of training. We probably won't see him until December.
00:22:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, don't say that.
00:22:20
Nicola Pringle-Adams
um No, I'm joking. We'll probably will see him. But again, it's going to be a case of, like you said, managing the minutes.
00:22:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh.
00:22:27
Nicola Pringle-Adams
We're not going to get the full viscer effect, I suppose. um for a wee while.
00:22:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well.
00:22:33
Nicola Pringle-Adams
But let's not think like that.
00:22:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's have Zencastle and we'll we'll try and pick some positives and look forward to um the game against the Swiss on Wednesday.
00:22:35
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Oh.
00:22:39
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah.
00:22:42
Nicola Pringle-Adams
i' I'm just trying to...
00:23:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
I should have told you that I've got a recording of the Zencaster adverts and you didn't need to do that.
00:23:16
Nicola Pringle-Adams
That took me by surprise.
00:23:20
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Zencaster. I was rushing try and find it.
00:23:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
So yeah, so part three, look forward to Wednesday. i think by deduction, we ought to be able to pick a lineup that Eddie's thinking about for Wednesday, although that inevitably would have included Tino and he's not going to play.
00:23:37
Nicola Pringle-Adams
He's not going to be on the craft.
00:23:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
settle
00:23:40
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I'm joking.
00:23:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I think it's got to still be Pope. In goal.
00:23:46
Nicola Pringle-Adams
After his performance on Saturday, I completely agree.
00:23:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:23:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think we're going to left with hardly any choice but Trippier and Lewis Hall at full-back.
00:23:56
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Trippie, yep, agreed. And then who's going to be the duo in the middle?
00:24:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Well, I don't know.
00:24:02
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I think it's probably the same as Saturday.
00:24:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
is' you think it should be Chow and Botman? It depends.
00:24:07
Nicola Pringle-Adams
and i
00:24:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sven Botman, three games in a week for Sven Botman is is unusual.
00:24:08
Nicola Pringle-Adams
honestly
00:24:13
Nicola Pringle-Adams
But they didn't. It is unusual. You are right. But well, OK, let's talk about Chow first then. Didn't put a foot wrong on Saturday. I thought he had a great game.
00:24:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
He did. I thought he was excellent. So we'll have Chow in then.
00:24:23
Nicola Pringle-Adams
So I think you have Chow. um You obviously are on the Stenbottman hate train.
00:24:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then...
00:24:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, I think he's great.
00:24:30
Nicola Pringle-Adams
and I'm joking.
00:24:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm just...
00:24:31
Nicola Pringle-Adams
You are right.
00:24:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm delighted. I'm delighted that he's... so that he appears to be back to his brilliant best and he appears to be fit enough to go game after game. But I just don't know if Eddie will risk him.
00:24:42
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Maybe Dan Burns. No, maybe you're right.
00:24:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
It could be Dan Burns. There might well be a they might well appear half an hour for Fab Schaar because I think he should be coming back from his concussion.
00:24:53
Nicola Pringle-Adams
He always gets concussion, doesn't he?
00:24:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm hoping. and But I don't know if he'd throw anything in. i don't know if I thought this is meant to be our easiest away game in the Champions League

Upcoming Match Previews

00:25:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
because they're another team out of the pot four.
00:25:04
Nicola Pringle-Adams
In the Champions League.
00:25:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
But they beat PSV in the first game. So there are obviously no mugs. Michael did a little bit of a preview of them and they've taken points off of Liverpool and AC Milan in previous European, recent European campaigns.
00:25:21
Nicola Pringle-Adams
new
00:25:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I think we're going to have to be good.
00:25:28
Nicola Pringle-Adams
have to be careful ought to be yeah gonna have to be
00:25:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So is that going to be Tonali, Bruno and Joe Linton in midfield again? Or will Bruno have a little bit of a sit on the bench and bring Miley in?
00:25:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think he'll start like that.
00:25:41
Nicola Pringle-Adams
a
00:25:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think this is an important game.
00:25:44
Nicola Pringle-Adams
yeah I don't think he'll um apologies I just I don't think that's a game for Miley to start um I think we'll probably definitely have Bruno, Tonali and Joe Linton in the middle to start.
00:25:56
Nicola Pringle-Adams
And then depending on the hold of the game that we have, depending on how it goes, we might see Miley come on, but I don't think he will start. um So I think it will be the the middle three that we've seen on Saturday. Sorry, Sunday. i think they'll start on Wednesday.
00:26:11
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Definitely.
00:26:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Then up front, would go Gordon, Alanga with Volta Marder down the middle.
00:26:18
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah, I think, I don't know, though you know, because ah Sometimes I do feel like we miss Jacob Murphy when he doesn't start.
00:26:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
He did sweep Fanny Adams, though, to be honest, against Arsenal.
00:26:29
Nicola Pringle-Adams
oh true.
00:26:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he is nursing. They're managing his minutes again over for an Achilles problem.
00:26:34
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Manager minutes. Yeah.
00:26:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he he did play ah quite we played more than an hour of that rather hard physical game with a lot of running because we were chasing the ball a lot, weren't we? Yeah.
00:26:48
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I suppose, yeah, I suppose Alanga didn't start and went, oh my God, on Sunday. So, yeah, I think you're right. I think it will be um Nick in the middle, obviously, and then ah Mr. Gordon and then Alanga. think, yeah, let's go with that.
00:27:05
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Good shout.
00:27:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Maybe they start with Big Will Sula. They could play him down the right.
00:27:09
Nicola Pringle-Adams
No, I don't think he'll start.
00:27:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's been the most effective right winger I've seen this season.
00:27:14
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah, no, I just,
00:27:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because to be honest, Alanga and Murphy are ah anonymous these days, which is a shame for what's going on. and
00:27:25
Nicola Pringle-Adams
tough
00:27:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, so that's what we're doing.
00:27:25
Nicola Pringle-Adams
road guys
00:27:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're looking forward to that. We're not... We're not looking backwards to say, oh, we've only got six points out of six in the Premier League. We've only scored four goals in the first six six games when we scored eight goals in the first six games last year.
00:27:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're not thinking about anything like that because we're assuming that we're going to stuff the Belgians to get our Champions League campaign off to a start proper start. And then we've got an Ange Prostokoglu Nottingham Forest coming to St James' Park on Saturday.
00:27:56
Nicola Pringle-Adams
We do, yes, you're right.
00:27:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that must... Sunderland won there on Saturday. So that must be three points for Newcastle.
00:28:01
Nicola Pringle-Adams
I know.
00:28:04
Nicola Pringle-Adams
But this is Newcastle, so let's just remember.
00:28:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, you're right. You're right.
00:28:11
Nicola Pringle-Adams
um So, yeah.
00:28:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we yeah we can't really count any chickens anywhere, can we? I think we've got to focus on this USG team.
00:28:15
Nicola Pringle-Adams
No, we've...
00:28:19
Nicola Pringle-Adams
One game at a time, but we've got to start winning.
00:28:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
And let's be honest... I think it draws a good result over there because we've still got our three games at home to get our points.
00:28:29
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Agreed.
00:28:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it draws a good result. Right. um And you're not too sad, are you, about Newcastle?
00:28:36
Nicola Pringle-Adams
um i was a bit annoyed yesterday.
00:28:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
and About the Arsenal results?
00:28:38
Nicola Pringle-Adams
when I was upset yesterday, but new week, new outlook. Let's go.

Conclusion and Future Outlook

00:28:45
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Can't look back, like you say.
00:28:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
New week, new outlook. That is a fantastic that's a fantastic attitude to have on a Monday, Nicola.
00:28:51
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Yeah, yes.
00:28:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know it's Tuesday morning when everybody's listening to this, but I don't know what you mean.
00:28:55
Nicola Pringle-Adams
But Monday when we're recording.
00:28:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
and we recording We're recording on Monday.
00:28:56
Nicola Pringle-Adams
and
00:28:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we have got a new week. So we've got a new outlook. We're going win against USG. We're going to score a hatful of goals against Ange Postacoglu's Nottingham Forest. um And I think, is that then, did we then have Benfica at home?
00:29:14
Nicola Pringle-Adams
We do have Ben Faker at home the following week. Yeah.
00:29:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then it's the international break where we hope that the healing gods will
00:29:20
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Woohoo.
00:29:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
The healing gods are working hard on Jacob Ramsey and Joanne Wisser.
00:29:26
Nicola Pringle-Adams
Tuna. And Tuna.
00:29:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Tino, yeah. I think, yeah, we'll have to make a human sacrifice for them to work on Tino. Anyway, thanks very much for joining me, Nicola, for that. Thank you, everyone, for listening.
00:29:38
Nicola Pringle-Adams
No problem. Thanks for having me.
00:29:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
