Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello everyone and welcome back to the Daily Newcastle podcast. Proud to be part of the Global Sports Podcast Network. I'm your host Michael Grimeslaw and today we're going to be diving into Newcastle United's next Premier League game, a Sunday afternoon clash at St James' Park against Nottingham Forest.
Newcastle's Recent Victory and Upcoming Game
00:00:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
The festivities of a 4-0 victory in Brussels are over and it is back to Tyneside where the hard work has only just begun. ah For 2pm on Sunday, the 5th of October.
00:00:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
And for me, it feels like a A pivotal game in our season already, to be honest. We've already had the highs of the Champions League thumping in midweek and the lows of two late defeats in a harrowingly boring 0-0 draw against Leeds, which I wouldn't even subject a machem to.
00:01:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, it was that bad.
Analysis Plan: Storylines and Predictions
00:01:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
So the question is, can Eddie Howe's men finally find the missing puzzle piece for an emphatic Premier League win?
00:01:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Over the next 20 minutes or so, I'll break down the big storylines, dig into the key players and look at what the history tells us of the fixture. And of course, I'll give you my prediction at the end, so stick around for that.
Performance Comparison: Newcastle vs Forest
00:01:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
So first of all, set the scene. Newcastle United versus Nottingham Forest. St James' Park, Sunday, 2 o'clock. Newcastle are coming into it on the back of a 4-0 win against Union Saint-Glois in Belgium. And honestly, that was the Newcastle United we've been crying out to see for a couple of months now.
00:01:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Roofless in front of goal, rock solid at the back and hungry in midfield. It was arguably the first time at the season where everything is just... click ah In contrast with that, Nottingham Forest were beating 3-2 at home by FC Michelin in the Europa League.
00:02:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ange Postacoglu is still searching for his first win in charge of Forest and the frustration is starting to show for both Ange and the supporters. They're leaky at the back, they concede from set pieces left, right and centre and they're coming to one of the most intimidating stadiums in the
St. James' Park as a Fortress

league.
00:02:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now if you knew Cassie United this is the kind of game where you say right, the fun in Europe. That's gone now. We need to back it up here in the Premier League.
00:02:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Six points from six games isn't good enough. Not for a squad of this quality. However, fixtures have been tough. One or two positive results and we have been unlucky in those games. So while there is pressure, there's more opportunity.
00:02:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So let's talk about St. James' Park for a minute because it does matter in this fixture.
Newcastle's Attack: Opportunities and Struggles
00:03:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Forrest simply hate coming to St. James' Park.
00:03:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
It defeats a nine. We don't talk about the Chris Wood hat-trick. um And 24 goals conceded in that time. The Toon Army have made life pretty miserable for Forrest up in the north. And to be honest, if we remember last season, it was more comfortable than a 4-3 scoreline would suggest.
00:03:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
the The wild thriller... It wasn't perfect, but for 15 minutes Newcastle United looked like the greatest team on the planet and scored four goals against one of England's sternest defences.
00:03:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
um St James's is going to be rocking on Sunday and I'm not sure we'll get four goals in 15 minutes, but we're expecting another good performance from the Magpies, particularly after the midweek buzz.
00:03:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But To be honest, from the Nottingham Forest side, Big Ange is probably more likely to get good reception at Newcastle than he is at the forest ground at the moment. So maybe the atmosphere won't be bad for him.
00:04:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
But if we zoom out to the fans and the the the clubs at the moment, as good as the as good as Wednesday night was for us, the Premier League table doesn't lie. We're sitting in 15th right now. One win, three draws, two losses.
00:04:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just four goals scored, which is the the joint lowest in
Defensive Strengths and Weaknesses
00:04:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
the league. And that's the frustration, isn't it? You you can't be drawing constant blanks. when you have the quality attacking talent that Newcastle United have and have invested in.
00:04:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I know you can say, oh, Nick Vultomar has only just come to the club, but Anthony Gordon, Anthony Langer, Harvey Barnes, Jacob Murphy, there is a good, let's say, 80, 90 goals, obviously not in one season, but that they can provide when they're starting um between them.
00:05:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Obviously, they're not going to deliver that as a two-in-one season, but Murphy and Alanga got about 40 goals and assists last season between them. Barnes and Gordon, when starting, you'd be confident putting up similar numbers as well.
00:05:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So there have it. That's 80 goals either side when they're starting for their teams. ah You wrote that in half, 40 should still be there for Newcastle um across either side. And that's all competitions.
00:05:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
That'll include games against the likes of Bradford, which we've already had. But there should be more goals coming from the wings that Newcastle United simply haven't had.
00:05:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
But the plus side... Five goals conceded in the league. Three of those against Liverpool. Two against Arsenal. One of the best defensive records in the league. Four clean sheets and six.
00:05:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Malik Chow and Sven Bottman are starting to build a partnership. They look like they've been playing together for years. And to be honest, that is a really exciting back two for me.
00:06:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nick Pope's also looked steady for the most part, taking away the last five minutes of the Arsenal game. And even though Livermanto is out, Kieran Trippier brings a leadership and he's had some decent moments at the back for us this season already.
00:06:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
So the platform is there. It's just can we add the goals? And that's where Nick Multimata has come in for
Nick Vultemada: A Rising Star
00:06:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Newcastle. Three goals and four already, as weve mentioned. More needs to come from the rest.
00:06:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
But let's focus on Multimata for a second. The man of the moment. Signed in the summer. Already showing signs why Eddie Howe wanted him. Scored against Arsenal. He scored in Belgium. He's got the physical presence to bully defenders.
00:06:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
But his movement and his finishing instincts just remind you of some of the top strikers Newcastle had in the past. And realistically, Newcastle needed that after a tough, tough summer.
00:06:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
But... When you look at the likes of Eketike, who's hit the ground running, in comparison to Seshko Jokerez, who has looked okay but only scored against um sort of i don't want to say lesser teams. but yes um And then other players at Newcastle have been linked with. Even Izak has had a tough start at Liverpool.
00:07:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was so important that Nick Voltomar followed in Eketike's footsteps and hit the ground running. And you can see why Eketike and Nick Vultomar were the two two of the three that Newcastle really wanted.
00:07:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
The other being Seshko, who, to be honest, at Man United, you can't really take how anyone plays as a refresh reflection of themselves. ah But yeah, he looks fantastic, doesn't Nick Vultemar? And a little stat for you as well.
00:07:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
If he scores on Sunday, he will be only the third player, or third Newcastle player, should I say, to score in each of their three first home appearances.
00:07:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
The company he's in would be Alan Shearer and Les Ferdinand. Legends, maybe the third one will get himself there eventually, but it's going to be a long battling career if he's going to reach the legend the legendary status of those two players but to be honest he's probably got the quality of what we've seen in the opening games uh you can see the toon army warming to him he's happy to chase lost causes his one touch play is impeccable i've already mentioned how good he is um
00:08:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
on the ball, and putting the ball in the back of the net, which the bookmakers have him as the favourite to do on Sunday. He's got a 45.5% chance to score, if you believe the odds.
00:08:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'll leave that one down to you, but it's Nick Voldemort, Anthony Gordon and then Chris Wood as the third most likely. um We'll get into the other two a bit later.
00:08:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm going to head to the first advert of the day ah which is from By Onique.
00:09:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, Vic Nick Vultomata is the star of the show.
Anthony Alanga: Form and Impact
00:09:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anthony Alanga is the man with a point to prove. He's joined from Forest in the summer. It's been of a bit of a slow start for him, despite looking very, very positive in the friendly games.
00:09:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
But in the league, certainly hasn't lived up to expectations. The biggest memory I have him so far is that miss really early on against Aston Villa. And that's kind of set the tone for his first few games.
00:10:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
However... Against Union Saint-Gélois, he looked like the player we all thought we were buying. Direct, quick, fearless, brilliant on the ball every time he got it.
00:10:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
And if that's a sign of things to come and he's just needed a little time to bet in, 55 million could be a steal. um This could be the perfect game for him as well against his old club, front of 52,000 at St. James'.
00:10:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
And defence has been Forrest's biggest weakness this season. And who would have thought i would have been saying that a month or two ago? If Howe gives Alanga the nod, which I think he should, Alanga could cause chaos down that right-hand side.
00:10:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
but it would be harsh on Jacob Murphy. he's it Not just because he's assisted half of our Premier League goals this season, including a goal against Barcelona as well. um but ah And if anyone knows how to shut down Anthony Alanga, it should really be Nico Williams.
00:11:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
But personally, I would love to see a front three of Gordon, Vultemar and Alanga in the Premier League. And so I'm dying enough to see it that I'd even risk having Alanga in against the club that know him the best.
00:11:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. But should probably give a bit of a perspective from the Nottingham Forest side of things as well.
Nottingham Forest's Managerial Challenges
00:11:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
This will be short because it's the Daily Newcastle podcast, obviously. And Ian has organised crossover with Marley, one of the Nottingham Forest fans who are part of the Global Sports Podcast Network.
00:11:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
in tomorrow's episode to get an understanding from the forest perspective um so big up being for getting that sorted uh but for me it's worth understanding where forest are right now they've got ang postacoglu in charge the former spurs boss the europa league winner big ang but it is just not working for them. ah They're not loving Big Andrew instead. No, no, no.
00:12:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah And no, no, no is the number of wins they've got in the league so far. Absolutely none. The fans are chanting for his head after the Europa League loss in midweek.
00:12:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're defensively shaky. They're lacking creativity and attack in their set pieces. Well, defensively in particular are incredibly poor. And to round off, they haven't kept a clean sheet in their last nine matches.
00:12:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But they do have threats. Elliot Anderson, former Geordie boy, absolutely fantastic player. Morgan Gibbs-White, another attacking talent. And Chris Wood,
00:12:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mentioned before, he's got a hat-trick against us at St. James' as before, and he's been the thorn on our side for a number of teams, Leeds, Nottingham Forest included, I think Burnley as well. So it's going to be one of those where, even though Chris Wood isn't a name that strikes fear into the hearts of Newcastle fans, on paper, probably will be a bit of a threat, particularly if Forest are going to get anything at St. James' Park.
00:13:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah but yeah he also scored in Europe in midweek you'll fancy a goal back at St James' but beyond that Forrest really lack balance. And you can tell because of that, they're lacking confidence as well. um They're a defensive side with an attacking coach.
00:13:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Big Ange has his way of playing football. The best way to describe it is very similar to Ruben Amorim, where if it doesn't go well, he will stick with it and double down until it works.
00:13:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
And unfortunately, I think every single person on the planet who understood... half of what maybe they should in regards to tactics i'm not there i'm not a genius at it either but it was clear to see it wasn't going to work you've got a defensive team and a manager who doesn't know how to defend so you're sitting there and going well that's a match made in hell to everyone but marinagas and it couldn't have happened to a nicer bloke
00:14:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
I do feel sorry for Big Ang, though. I do like him. I want him to do well, but certainly not at Newcastle United's expense.
Consistency in Domestic Performance
00:14:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
For us, the task is very, very simple.
00:14:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Don't give them hope. start Start strong. Get the first goal and force Nottingham Forest to open up that back line because as soon as they do... Our front three are going have space and time on the ball.
00:14:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we all know it just takes a couple of seconds for Nick Valtemada to put the ball in the back of the net. um But yes, that's the perspective from Nottingham Forest. From the perspective of Newcastle...
00:14:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
This, and let's be clear, this is as big of a game for Eddie Howe as it is for Big Ang. And that's not because, for very different reasons, I would like to add, because Eddie Howe's job is not under pressure, no matter what some Twitter bozo will tell you, it is nowhere near under pressure.
00:15:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Even if we didn't win the next five games, Eddie Howe would still have the season and be backed by the board. That's his position at the moment. and that ain't changing.
00:15:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
and But Newcastle do need to find that domestic rhythm because the longer you are in that bottom half, the longer you are closer to relegation than to Europe, it plays a big part in your mentality.
00:15:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've been so close against the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool, only to be undone late on. It's very, very frustrating, but it's also a sign that we're really not far off having a team that's competing against the big boys regularly and can push up there, despite losing who many thought was the best striker in the league just a month ago.
00:16:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah So we are doingome but we are still doing okay. I think if we beat Forest here, the table suddenly looks a lot healthier. Confidence from Europe carries over and the fans will start to believe again very, very quickly.
00:16:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
As much as we don't like to think we are, as football fans, we're very, very fickle. You, me, geezer down the pub, everyone. We'd like to say why not, but it's just a matter of fact that we are.
00:16:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But more importantly for me, Sunday has to be a reminder that Newcastle United and St James' Park can be a fortress.
00:16:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because we've lost three games at home already this season, albeit Arsenal, Liverpool, Barcelona. No shame in any of those defeats. But add Nottingham Forest to that list, a loss or even a draw, questions start to be asked of, now, is the squad too stretched? Was Eddie Howe backed well enough in the summer window?
00:17:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Who's scoring the goals? What's wrong? Are we creating enough? Where's the consistency? All of that will start to come forward. And the person that will be asked about all that is Eddie Howe. um And the last thing he needs is another headache, is Newcastle United management.
00:17:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah So this is all about momentum for Newcastle, plain and simple. um And you know what?
Predicted Victory and Game Dynamics
00:17:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
With that, I'm going to go into my prediction of the game because management is exactly what I think this will be.
00:17:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
i think this is going to be a really, really professional win for Newcastle United. i think we're very solid at the back. We know Forrest are shaky in defence. They've got a few players, as I mentioned. I didn't mention Dan Andoy, who I do really like as well. Signed from, believe it was Bologna in Italy.
00:17:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah He looks really good as well, alongside the likes of Wood, Gibbs White, Anderson. yeah They do have some fantastic players, but it's just not clicking. And under Nuno, I might have said this is probably going to be a draw. One might sneak a 2-1 win.
00:18:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I'm going for a dominant Newcastle United victory here of 3-0. We've got tons of quality. Confidence is there off midweek.
Momentum and Winning Streak Importance
00:18:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
If we score early on, we'll go 2-0 up, I think, in the first half.
00:18:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll sit back a little bit, to keep a professional, and then get a third on the counter. um But ultimately, it's a professional encounter that ends with a Newcastle United win.
00:18:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And it'll be a further sign that the Big Orange experiment hasn't worked. Hopefully, it's another game where we cement. We've got one of the best defences in the league. But I think, again, i standing I'm sitting here and I'm really, really confident for the game. Not because we've just smashed a team in the Champions League 4-0, but because it is so obvious what is happening in our opposition isn't working. And that's brilliant for us because we're currently...
00:19:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Growing in confidence. Another win here. That confidence lasts throughout the entire international break. Players want to come back. Ramsey could be on the bench at the weekend, which is another brilliant comeback. Obviously, the Wissar injury being a bit longer than we thought.
00:19:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's a little bit of a drop. But overall... Everything is quite positive at Newcastle United at the moment. So if you're one of the lucky ones heading down to St. James' Park on Sunday, it doesn't look like Storm, i think it's Amy, is going to get in your
Game Day Schedule and Coverage
00:19:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
way. um that looks to a That looks like it's going to clear up before the match, thankfully, ah for everyone going. Kicks off at 2pm.
00:19:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Coverage will start a little bit earlier. If you're abroad, one of the Newcastle United its listeners or viewers from abroad, um Welcome. You're a Jory. I hope you're watching it.
