Introduction & Premier League Return

00:00:05
Speaker
Your daily soccer podcast with the Global Sports Podcast Network. Welcome back to GSPN Fridays. My name's Kate. I'm your host for this morning's podcast on Friday, September

International Break Musings

00:00:19
Speaker
the 12th. And the Premier League is well and truly back, isn't it? Thank goodness. How do we survive during the international break? It's so boring, isn't it?
00:00:27
Speaker
Unless you're a kind of diehard England fan. Personally, m i yeah I'll admit to you, I'll admit to you, right? I don't follow them necessarily when they're um doing their World Cup qualifiers.
00:00:40
Speaker
um Bores me a little bit, to be honest with you, but, you know I'll probably get interested around about the yeah the World Cup stage, providing we qualify, which is looking like we're going to. But anyway...

Premier League News & Fixtures

00:00:50
Speaker
ah Yeah, welcome back. So the Premier League is just around the corner. It's back again. ah Thank goodness. And I'm just going to go with some fresh news, injury updates, a couple of key fixtures that could start to define the season this morning. So let's get into it, shall we?

Transfer Movements & Injuries

00:01:09
Speaker
So first up, going to go with Andre Inanna. He's finally left Man United for a loan move to Trabzonspor. Okay, so that is a Turkish club, I do believe.
00:01:24
Speaker
And with United really having signed Sen Lamens, you know, Inanna was pretty much squeezed, wasn't he? wasn't going to get... a lot of um lot of game time. So that is good.
00:01:37
Speaker
ah Good for him. um Let's face it, he only started once this season. So he's probably glad of the move. And let's face it, and the weather in Turkey is a lot better than it is in the UK. Over at Chelsea, summer signing Dario Asugo. He's likely out until 2026, can you believe?
00:01:55
Speaker
After a thigh injury, he suffered um on international duty playing in an under 21 for Portugal. So that is a major blow um for their squad depth, isn't it? With Asugo being out.
00:02:10
Speaker
um He plays in the midfield, you know, showing a lot of promise this season and came from La Liga. um So, yeah, bit of a shame for Chelsea. They're doing so well at the moment. I do think they've got enough squad depth for it not to me um be a massive blow. But let's face it, anybody out um is is a blow, isn't it, um to the depth of your squad. So he's going to be out until 2026. And Man City.
00:02:34
Speaker
say and man city Well, their injury list has has just taken another hit. Marmouche, the guy with a great name. What a great name that is. Omar Marmouche.
00:02:45
Speaker
He's going to miss the upcoming Man City or Manchester Derby, I should say, um after he ah picked up a knee injury on international duty too. So one down for Man City. That's going to be an interesting game, that isn't it, ah this weekend?
00:03:01
Speaker
um And it's good news for Liverpool, right? Jeremy Frimpong is back in full training and that's ahead of their match v Burnley this weekend, which kind of eases one defensive concern for them, doesn't it? Meanwhile, Alexander Isak's readiness remains uncertain.
00:03:18
Speaker
Apparently, fitness is still a question mark, which kind of makes you think or makes you wonder what he's been doing all summer. um and the extended summer break he had off um when he was at Newcastle, right?

League Standings & Team Performances

00:03:32
Speaker
ah So that's your injury news ahead of this weekend.
00:03:39
Speaker
So let's take a look at where things actually stand there, not where the pundits hope they would be or fans hope they'd be, to be honest with you, talking as a Leeds fan. ah So here's how the table is looking after three matches. Liverpool at the top with nine points.
00:03:53
Speaker
um We've got Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs, Everton and Sunderland rounding off the top six. Whoever thought at the beginning of the season that son that Everton will be sitting in fifth place? Certainly not me.
00:04:07
Speaker
ah Good for them. What can I say? um I'm a little bit miffed that Lees didn't go for someone like Grealish, to be honest with you. um But there you go. um Yeah, so pretty good start and pretty good start for Sunderland as well. Nestled in sixth place there.
00:04:23
Speaker
um Reggie Labrie doing a great job over there. And other than that, the top top three, as you probably would expect. um So focusing on the promoter's size then, Sunderland, Two wins, one loss, plus two goal difference and six points. I think that's pretty good going to be, to be honest with you. Best of three so far, of course.
00:04:43
Speaker
um They've looked pretty solid and their defensive work in particular has been better than some expected. um So, you know, Reggie Labrie doing a great job over there at the moment. Of course, we're only three games in, aren't we? So let's not get ahead of ourselves. But, uh,
00:04:59
Speaker
You know, and I like Sunderland as well. I know I kind of shouldn't in the world of football. you're supposed to kind of hate your enemies, aren't you? But I don't. I like Sunderland. Leeds, what can I say? um They're on four points.
00:05:12
Speaker
ah They've won one, drawn one, lost one. But the goal difference, that is a problem, isn't it? We've got no goals. We're not scoring anything. Quite frankly, I don't know where the goals are coming from because we haven't got a number 10.
00:05:23
Speaker
As you probably heard me rant on Wednesday, ah the transfer window was woeful for Leeds. um And I do not hold out much hope, to be honest. They won their opener against Everton, didn't they? um And then, you know, they got hammered at Arsenal, five nail That was a disgrace. And then they drew at Newcastle. What an absolutely boring piece of, ah how can I put it ah but bit of rubbish, let's call it rubbish, um that was.
00:05:52
Speaker
um Just boring, boring match. Even Newcastle fans thought it was appalling. um So it's been a mixed bag, no consistency. It was interesting on Wednesday, Nick brought up the um the subject of Daniel Farker not being cut out for the Premier League. Now,
00:06:08
Speaker
ah When he first got the job, um he was promised that if he took Leeds up to the Premier League, he would get given a good shot at managing um managing them in the Premier League. But i'll tell you what, if this form continues and they they they yeah they fit slip further down the the table, they're in 12th at the moment,
00:06:26
Speaker
um Could be worse, you know, we could be Wolves in 20.

Challenges for Promoted Teams

00:06:31
Speaker
But if they start slipping any more down the table, Fox foxs are goner. And I think he should be. I don't think he's cut out for it.
00:06:37
Speaker
But then again, has he had the the the the backing of the the club? I don't think he has um personally. but anyway, i won't focus too much on Leeds as much as I'd like to. And then, of course, we've got Burnley, the other promoted side.
00:06:50
Speaker
Three points. um They're sitting now in 14th place, two behind Leeds, one behind Man City as well. They're having a bit of a shocker at the moment, aren't they?
00:07:02
Speaker
um But um yeah, Burnley, goal difference around minus two. um They've had one good result and two losses. You know, it's not disastrous, but, you know, definite definite warning signs, especially in defence.
00:07:17
Speaker
And again, you've got to cut you've got to think about the manager. is Scott Parker cut out for ah the Prem? You know, Daniel Farker and Scott Parker have both shown that they can get clubs promoted It's just solidifying their performance in the Premier League, which is ah seemingly kind of called into question. So interesting. Watch this space, as I'm sure you and i will be.
00:07:39
Speaker
um So, yeah, it basically tells us that the promoted teams, they haven't collapsed, have they? um But none of them have done anything comfortably yet. Both Burnley and Leeds are... Where are we getting the goals from? This is what I want to know.
00:07:53
Speaker
ah Sunderland have the momentum. Leeds really are under pressure to to tighten up. I mean, their player ratings for the last couple of games have been woeful. um quite Quite frankly, why on earth we've got back Jack Harrison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin?
00:08:07
Speaker
um I will never know. But anyway, Burnley also need to string results and performances together because at the moment they are... Not in a good place. Not quite on live support yet, both those two teams, ah but not far away. And, you know, with the transfer window closed, you know, squad depth, um injury management and consistency, basically, ah these are going to, those factors are going to separate the teams from those who survive um this season.

GSPN & Bionique Partnership

00:08:35
Speaker
um Those who thrive, obviously, and those who struggle. You know, big signings are great. um But now the real test begins, um you know, avoiding slip ups against teams that you really should be beating in Leeds' his case, um keeping your back lines strong and disciplined um and rotating when needed, ah really.
00:08:56
Speaker
um And in the case of, well, particularly Leeds with Calvert-Lewin, you know, minimising casualties.

00:10:01
Speaker
So welcome back to this Friday's edition of the GSPN podcast. Kate here, Leeds fan. um Tragic Leeds fan, I think is the case. ah But hey, we're going to have a look now at the yeah injury and the doubt for players this weekend.
00:10:18
Speaker
um Pretty mixed bad, to be honest with you. Leeds... have a pretty long list of doubts. Unfortunately, we've got Ethan Ampadu, who is ah doubtful because of a knee injury. Same with Ayo Tanaka.
00:10:32
Speaker
um Gabriel gunmet good Goodmanson. Gosh, I can never say his name. Also, he's had a knock. ah Lucas Perry, his quad, and Lucas Nemecha, his foot. And Joel Pirro with a calf injury, possible calf calf injury. So basically that's half the team, isn't it?
00:10:49
Speaker
Yeah. ah And we play Fulham away tomorrow. Oh, my goodness. Not looking great, is it? um Arsenal definitely are going to be without Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus for their home game against Nottingham.
00:11:03
Speaker
um And those are both knee injuries. um Chelsea's Romeo Lavia and... um Benoit Badiechil, they're also close to returning, but not sure whether they're going to start.
00:11:15
Speaker
All right. um Dario Sugo, as I just mentioned at the beginning of the pod, is out long term. Rhys James, he might be back. ah He did have ah a bit of an injury last time out, but I think he is training with the team and he might be back as well.
00:11:31
Speaker
ah Man City's injury list woes are stacking up. Poor old Pepe ah languishing in 13th in the table. Gosh, never thought i'd say that. Who have we got? Oh yeah, Omar Marmoush, definitely out for the derby.
00:11:44
Speaker
um And others like Ryan Cherky and Kovacic are still unavailable. So these injuries can basically swing results, can't they? Especially in tight matches or when squads are tested and stretched. So that's going to be an interesting one, that Manchester derby this weekend.
00:12:06
Speaker
So let's have a little look at the fixtures this weekend and my predictions. I love doing this bit, but we seem to have a little bit of inconsistency, don't we? So basically um with the international break. So let's see if I can give you my predictions and follow them up next Friday with the results. That would be great.
00:12:25
Speaker
ah So let's have a look. We've got kicking off at

Weekend Match Predictions

00:12:29
Speaker
12.30 tomorrow afternoon. We've got Arsenal and Notts Forest. Forest, of course, under new management with Ange and his backroom team ah taking over from Nuno.
00:12:42
Speaker
um Yeah, Arsenal obviously are going to be missing Habits and Jesus. Is that going to be enough to um pose any problems for them? I don't know, to be honest with you. I doubt it.
00:12:54
Speaker
I doubt it, given that kind of Forrester in a bit of a state of flux at the moment. I'm going to go um to nil to Arsenal tomorrow. um I think they've still got more than enough at home to beat Forrest.
00:13:08
Speaker
ah The next next match we've got, Bournemouth and Brighton. um I'm going to go with Brighton for this for an away win. You know, I think i'm'm I'm actually going to go 1-0.
00:13:19
Speaker
I think more composure um generally on the pitch and they generally make fewer defensive errors that than Bournemouth at the moment, um who are... um Where are they sitting?
00:13:31
Speaker
I'm just trying to have a look. They are sitting. Oh, the seventh. Yeah. so you So you wouldn't think that, but you know ah what happens the way they're playing. I just think um they're more composed. ah So they, so they should meet, they should beat Bournemouth tomorrow.
00:13:46
Speaker
ah Palace and Sunderland. um I'm going to go 1-1. I do think that Sunderland's energy is going to give them um enough to hold paris Palace to a draw, even at home.
00:13:58
Speaker
um So that's going to be one to watch. Everton Villa. Now, don't know. I'm going to go Everton with this. I think they're on a bit of a roll at the moment. Villa, um they still really haven't got out the starting blocks, have they? They're they're in 19th on one point. Not doing great. Is the era of...
00:14:19
Speaker
of um Unai Emery coming to a conclusion. I hope not um because I think he's a great manager, but you know, everything comes and goes, doesn't it? Everything has a, has a shelf life. Is this his? i don't know.
00:14:34
Speaker
I'm going to go to want Everton on um Saturday for that one. And then we've got Fulham and Leeds. I mean, you know, I'm going to go one nil to Fulham, if not more, to be honest. I just think Leeds' back line is appalling at the moment.
00:14:50
Speaker
And they've got quite a few injury doubts, haven't they? And they're just not great away from home. I think they're pretty poor at the moment. So it gives me no pleasure in saying that. But, you know, I think Fulham are going to do that. 1-0 to Fulham on Saturday.
00:15:02
Speaker
Newcastle and Wolves, I think, yeah, Wolves struggle away, don't they? And I think Newcastle, now that the whole ESAC thing has ah been put to bed, I think they've probably had a couple of weeks of proper ah training, time to refocus, regroup.
00:15:17
Speaker
And it is at St James' Park, isn't it? I think that is going to be a win for the two, two nil to them. The Hammers and Spurs. Well, what's, don't know. um Hammers pulled it out the bag, didn't they, against Forrest.
00:15:33
Speaker
um And um that was an away win for West Ham. Was that to do with the new no effect and this kind of ah unrest and quiet, disquiet at the club?
00:15:46
Speaker
um I don't know. um But this is a difficult difficult one to call. um might go for a draw on this one. I'm going to go 2-2. 2-2, Hammerspurs at home to West Ham.
00:16:00
Speaker
Brentford, Chelsea. Yeah, ah Chelsea, ah definitely for me. Brentford are playing, you know, quite gutsy at the moment, but I think Chelsea's depth and their attacking options, um despite the odd injury, are going to play out at the end of the day.
00:16:14
Speaker
Burnley, Liverpool on Sunday. I'm going to go, obviously... It's going to be a 2-0 win to Liverpool away from home. Burnley, you know, as always, are going to put a good fight up. But I think the class of Liverpool is just going to overwhelm them.
00:16:30
Speaker
And it's going to be a comfortable Liverpool win. And Man City v Man United. This should be ah walk in the park for City if they were firing on all cylinders, but they're not.
00:16:42
Speaker
So I'm going to say 2-2. It's going to be a derby. It's going to be chaotic. ah But City are without Marmouche, aren't they? And others. um United are going to test them, but they're not going to take full control. So 2-2 from me for the Manchester derby.
00:17:00
Speaker
OK, so that is your snapshot for Match Week 4. Key games, injury chaos, surprises brewing. Watch how Leeds cope. Or don't.
00:17:11
Speaker
I'd suggest don't. ah See if Arsenal can cope without their usual firepower. And whether City's injury crisis is going to bite them in a massive game this week against United.
