Carny's Unclear Plan Discussion
00:00:00
Baker Plbg
Okay, I talked a lot about, I got a lot of reaction to that carny. his new plan, which hasn't been clarified anymore. So I don't know anything

further. As usual, it's the political shell game where they end this program and start that program and zippity-doo-dah, whip it all around, and nobody knows their ass from their elbow, who's paying for what, who gets what.
Apprenticeship Pay and Training Issues
00:00:24
Baker Plbg
I did have a lot of comments about people saying, you know, part of the problem is apprentices don't get paid enough. um that owners of businesses do not train ah those apprentices to know um the systems well enough.
00:00:43
Baker Plbg
And ah basically a lot of bitching, which is which is fine. There is some onus as a business owner, which I take seriously.
Role in Training Journeymen and Apprentices' Responsibility
00:00:50
Baker Plbg
I'll repeat it again for those that are new. I have created 36...
00:00:54
Baker Plbg
thirty six journeyman including my two sons that does not mean i've taken 36 from beginning to end but i have 36 that i have signed off on their blue books to turn into journeyman so i in my view i've done my part that said uh There is a lot of onus on the apprenticeship or on the apprentice to be engaged, to initiate, to do learning offline, which means not all the learning happens on the job site. You got to take what you learn. There's a big wide internet out there that you got to figure out how systems work so that you can be more valuable to your boss and eventually to yourself because those are the skills that you will learn that no one can take away from you if you develop them correctly.
00:01:45
Baker Plbg
So but in my estimation, the owner or the journeyman, the master plumber, if you will, um
00:01:54
Baker Plbg
you we've got to be able to provide those learning experiences and be educated enough ourselves to explain these things properly.
Hands-On Learning in Trades
00:02:03
Baker Plbg
But just lots of people think that they just sort of show up and need to be a sponge.
00:02:10
Baker Plbg
Just sit there. and wait for the water to pour on them and eventually enough will seep in that they become ah skillful at their trade.
00:02:22
Baker Plbg
That is not how this works. this The beautiful thing about the trades is it's hands-on. You've got to use your hands. You've got to get dirty. You've got to get down in the in the mud and the grime and the Whatever it is, if you're pulling wire or you're building houses or you're tiling floors, I don't care what it is. You've got to get in there and do it.
00:02:44
Baker Plbg
Do it. Not study it, but do it. And I think there's a lot of hesitation just to get in there and do that.
Taking Opportunities for Skill Growth
00:02:51
Baker Plbg
And so if I was, and i you can to hit my boys up on the side and see if I'm lying, but that's exactly what I did with all of my apprentices, including my boys, is give them the opportunities to grow and to stretch this the skillset they currently have into a broader, ah our both words, broader and more nuanced skill set so that they can become adept and they don't need me.
00:03:21
Baker Plbg
We have reached the point in my relationship with with my boys is they don't call me very often anymore. they call me it's because something's gone wrong or there's something new or it's a business decision.
00:03:36
Baker Plbg
When it comes to ah troubleshooting and navigating ah the plumbing world, they are very skilled plumbers and and technicians, HVAC techs, all that

stuff. They know their business because they have been put in those situations and they've taken the initiative to learn those systems by themselves.
00:04:01
Baker Plbg
And that's the best. It's got to be a combination. I get lots of people work for terrible. There's lots of terrible businesses. There's lots of terrible bosses. There's lots of jerks. There's a million horror stories.
00:04:12
Baker Plbg
It is your duty.
00:04:14
Baker Plbg
to ah take control of your learning, to take control of your life, and if the opportunity presents itself and you want to take those risks, if you become a business owner, to provide the best experience possible to the people that work for you and under you.
00:04:32
Baker Plbg
As usual, those are my thoughts, not yours. hope everybody has a wonderful day. We are crazy-ass busy, and I am excited. for the for the possibilities

of everything. The best thing about this, I've been doing this. Listen, I was talking to a guy the other day, or this morning, that I have not seen in, i don't know, a decade.
00:04:54
Baker Plbg
And he's like, he was telling me about a house, that or not a house, a community hall that he was working on. And he's like, i was I remember pulling wire in that place in 1974. And that is my earliest memory. I'm like, dude, I remember working with my dad in that community hall, glue and pipe or cut. So I must have been four.
00:05:16
Baker Plbg
So I have been doing this for 52 years, 52 years. Now, I haven't been doing it in a you know contributing way for 52 years, but still 52 years, and I am as excited about it now as I was back then. The opportunities are tremendous for for everybody that decides to take the journey seriously.
Empowerment Through Personal Stories
00:05:43
Baker Plbg
Good luck out there. create your own stories, create your own life. That's the whole message that I have. You can take control and be beholden to no one.
00:05:54
Baker Plbg
That is power, my friends. That is power. My thoughts, not yours.
