Every club, every day. The Global Sports Podcast Network. Welcome to today's episode of the Daily Villa podcast as part of the Global Sports Podcast Network.

Aston Villa's Recent Performances

00:00:15
Speaker
My name is Nyla and I'm happy to have Craig co-host today's episode. And we've got a lot to discuss today. We are approaching the end of a three match week um from the Chelsea draw, sorry, the Chelsea loss Brentford win and now the upcoming Southampton fixture. It's been a bit of a ride. How are you managing Craig?
00:00:37
Speaker
I wish it was a draw against Chelsea. Far from it though, wasn't it? I'm doing pretty well now that I have with you. Yeah, not too bad. um Yeah, just trying to make it through the week. Like I said, it felt like it's kind of been a ride um to support Villa this week and hopefully we're on the up now. But let's rewind back to Sunday at Stanford Bridge. We saw a few changes to the starting 11, goalkeeper substitution at half, a few missed goal scoring opportunities, mistakes galore in the back.

Analyzing the Chelsea Loss

00:01:09
Speaker
Talk us through what you think went wrong. Where did Villa break down?
00:01:16
Speaker
Where didn't we break down? um That was a real rough one to sit through and watch. The biggest thing I felt was that we looked unorganized. We struggled to get the ball out of the back. as Chelsea's high press was excellent. I can't put anything more on that. um But we really struggled when playing out of the back under pressure.
00:01:40
Speaker
and when we did then decide to play direct we were always outnumbered so the yeah the gaps between our units was always too big so we drop in to help with the playing out of the back but then Martinez or Torres wouldn't have any option they played long and then Ali was always playing one on four so it really wasn't helping. We also went wrong with a bunch of individual performances of players that We expect more from that struggled. Paul Torres in particular really struggled that night and was at fault for the first goal. um We had Martinez make that really stupid decision and almost thankfully it's not as severe as it looked, but basically before he could be out for a number of weeks after his injury there as well. And
00:02:32
Speaker
I think you know as much as everyone on this podcast how much I praised Ollie Watkins and I do think he is a really good striker. But the chances he misses does separate him from a good and a great striker. So for me that those were the biggest takeaways from that game.
00:02:49
Speaker
Yeah, absolutely. I think you hit the nail on the head there. And I think Chelsea seems to have Villa in their pocket, um I'd say, just over the last few times that we've come up against them. I know last year it was really odd. We struggled against them in both times that we played them. So yeah, I mean, credit to their manager and their tactics for being able to shut us down. And I do agree, I think,
00:03:15
Speaker
The high press was a major problem for us. We couldn't relieve that pressure. We're asking our forward to hold the ball with four people on him. So I think overall just wasn't a good day in the office for Villa. And yeah, just really tough one to watch, I think. And because of that result,
00:03:35
Speaker
um do you Do you feel like that lived up to your expectations heading into the match? Did you kind of predict that based off of you know the windlass streak that we were on and the up and down performances where we looked okay sometimes and sometimes we looked a bit shaky?

Implications of Top-Teams Losses

00:03:52
Speaker
um How did that turn out for you? Yeah, I i wasn't surprised by it, to be perfectly honest, and I was fearful going into the game because I mentioned on a previous podcast that
00:04:07
Speaker
Chelsea for me, I've found their groove now. They know how to play, they know what their best 11 is. I would say they've got a strong 22 now where they know competition for places and I do honestly think with an age in Manchester Cityside a Liverpool side is doing well now, but we don't know what they're going to be like once they start struggling um because they've got a new manager. How's he going to cope with that? I do think Chelsea are in position that not this season, but I think moving forward could be challenging for the title. So it's going to be a case of that. Those are one of the teams that's going to be competing for those top four positions. And I'll be perfectly honest, we've seen why off the pace of charles Chelsea.
00:04:53
Speaker
They were a very good team. One positive I will say that I saw in that game was it was around the 15, 20 minute mark. Um, we were struggling to keep the ball up top and he made a switch of putting in Rogers, um, out on the left and put McGinn up top for McGinn to hold up the play. And Rogers was able to deal more with the pace along there their, their right-hand side to help Luca Deano.
00:05:18
Speaker
So I was pleased to see that there was a plan B there from Unai Emery, something that we've been critical about in recent weeks. So obviously it didn't live up to this this week, but I am glad to see that there is full process there for when things aren't quite going to plan.
00:05:36
Speaker
Yeah, absolutely. I think being able to make those adjustments in the run of the match is can be crucial. I think going forward and one thing I was a bit disappointed with Villa is we know how um dangerous Cole Palmer can be and just we were not able to shut him down. So I think, um you know, and the next time that we we match up with Chelsea, I think I would like to see them um take him out of the game more if possible.
00:06:06
Speaker
And just with that result, with that loss, Chelsea shot up to second in the table, as you said, they they found their form, they found their groove, and Villa dropped to eleventh at the time. So in terms of results and form, Chelsea doesn't seem to be doing too badly.
00:06:22
Speaker
Do you think the outcome of this match was a major lost point situation or, you know, at this point in the season to lose to a team that's, you know, top four at this point is not too much of a big deal?
00:06:41
Speaker
It's a funny one because my first instinct was to say it's not that big of a deal because of how early we are in the season. But when you delve a little deeper and think about the losses that we've had, we lost to Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham and now Chelsea. If you had to name four teams that you think you'll be competing for top four with, like basically giving g Liverpool, Man City and Arsenal the first three,
00:07:08
Speaker
You would expect those four took names to be in the hat there. Not Liverpool, not livemp on that Arsenal, because they were already there, but those teams there and thereabouts. So that is a worrying stat for me, the fact that we have dropped so many points against them and we're automatically going to be playing catch-up.
00:07:25
Speaker
As we know, the Premier League is a league that is extremely competitive and play it teams can drop points anywhere like Bournemouth beaten Arsenal recently and loads of different fixtures that I can name. So it's not to the worrying point that it's like if Dortmund lose to Bayern Munich, for example, they pretty much know their season's done um because Bayern Munich is going to live live forward. But it's not the case of that with the Premier League. So it's it It's worrying that we're losing to the teams that we're trying to be competitive with, but it's not the end of the world just yet. Yeah, I completely agree. I would say.
00:08:05
Speaker
it's It's not the most concerning but at the same time I think it puts the pressure on us later on in the season where now we're maybe neck and neck with these same teams and around the standings and now it becomes we have to win against them in the next fixture that we have.

00:08:23
Speaker
Whereas you know if we go and we draw or we get a win then there's a little bit less at stake um later on in the season. So we'll just have to see how things play out and and hopefully they can get the results against the next upcoming fixtures so that we're not in too much of a trouble at the end of the season. We will be back shortly with more on the Brentford victory at Villa Park after this message courtesy of Zencaster.

Pre-Brentford Match Nerves

00:09:40
Speaker
Okay Craig, given the result at Chelsea and the winless streak Villa had, were you nervous at all heading into the Brentford fixture? It's funny I was talking about this with a friend recently and I felt like for 95% of last season I wasn't nervous at all.
00:09:59
Speaker
every single game I looked forward to seeing Villa and it does seem like our bubble burst and it's gone back to the point of that I'm kind of nervous in every game at the moment now, not necessarily because we're playing necessarily badly just that I feel that we don't have that kind of invincibility about us anymore.
00:10:23
Speaker
We, we are subject to mistakes at the moment. We look nervous on the ball, especially in the Chelsea game. Um, so it was a concern and I know, and you as a player yourself, neither know that confidence really brings, comfortability on the ball. It breeds, um, an understanding of how to play with each other. So the fact that we got that win against Brentford, and if we can make it two out of two with Southampton,
00:10:54
Speaker
Um, it's going to be extremely important for us because that confidence builds momentum and momentum builds teams as simple as that. So I think going into this weekend, we can then get that tag off us as well, because I've even used it myself on the crossover episode with Southampton. That'll be coming out soon. When team, when you've won one game, someone can say that there's only one one in nine.
00:11:19
Speaker
Before that game, it was they haven't won in eight. So you still got that tag on you. But if we can beat Southampton, we get rid of that tag. It's now we've won our last two games. Confidence can start building. And then we can progress into a what's going to be a very busy December period.

Importance of Beating Southampton

00:11:36
Speaker
absolutely and it's really it's interesting that you mentioned that because the the way that i kind of saw that and interpreted it it was not so much about building momentum and confidence it was more and like and i don't know if you agree with this but i just felt like we were in quicksand a bit and the harder that we tried to fight to get a win and to get points the more that we just kind of sunk into this um disarray of of just not finding the form, not doing what we needed to do to get the result. So hopefully the Brentford win is a sign that we're kind of finding our way out of that quicksand and not going to continue to sink deeper and deeper. What are your thoughts on that?
00:12:19
Speaker
I 100% agree. they that When you walk into the dressing room on a Monday for practice, when you've won on a Saturday, it's it's like a ah going on vacation. It's like going on a holiday. You walk in, everyone's beaming, everyone's high-fiving, looking, everything like that. When you're on a losing streak or a, let's not say a losing streak, but a not winning streak as Villa were on, for example,
00:12:47
Speaker
that Monday morning, even in Birmingham, looks extremely even more dull than normal. Didn't know if that was possible. head that Exactly right. Everyone's heads are down, everyone's eyes are down. um It's a lot harder to get through that. And I felt like you've been seeing it on the manager's face in interviews recently and on the touchline. I feel like he looked defeated and that's a very hard one to shake so the fact that he got the win must have really lifted his spirits and lift the team's spirits and as I say if we go into Southampton and we're able to get three points and my heart is really saying that we need that one performance now that
00:13:30
Speaker
really shows us that we are at our peak of our ability again. So if we could get like a 3-0 win against Southampton for example on Saturday, I think the fans will start to relax a bit more because that really is a big factor for Villa Park when Villa Park's nervous.

Fan Influence and Defensive Focus

00:13:47
Speaker
like i was there on the reverse fixture for villa brentford when we tied 3-3 last season and when we conceded the second goal we went we went 2-0 up and then we went 2-2 you felt the stadium's bubble burst and i knew instantly after that that brentford wouldn't score again thankfully we dug deep and ollie watkins got the equalizer and it made it 3-3 but it's really a big factor that that when that crowd gets going it we do feel invincible which was which will bring me to my next point in a minute but but also um when we we worry then that gets felt on the field as well and for all the villa fans that are listening and all the villa fans that go we have to try and stop this
00:14:35
Speaker
sense of comfort when we go ahead because I honestly think that's why Brentford got the goal this past week because we started hearing the Ole chants and all this and Villa fans like can we play you every week and everything like that and like you've still got to respect the side like Brentford and That game for me, even though I was happy with the performance, really should have got a clean sheet. In the second half they had very little of a sniff of the ball. um We shouldn't have conceded that goal and I really think that was down to the fact of taking that foot off the gas.
00:15:09
Speaker
100% yeah I think, I don't think Unai Emery is just saying all the things to the supporters and in a lot of that stuff in the media just to say it. I mean I i went to the Bournemouth match earlier um this year so last season but Villa Park is a electrifying so I do firmly believe that you know the players feed off the energy and they hear the chants they hear the singing so yeah i I do agree I think we can do our dot do ji ah due diligence as fans and and play our part and just encourage them to keep going and not have that lapse of concentration and and discipline and fully agree that that should have been a clean sheet that game and
00:15:51
Speaker
At that point, when you're up 3-0, you have that sort of

Tactical Insights from Brentford Match

00:15:54
Speaker
cushion. You're not really fighting for the win anymore. You're you're focusing on securing that clean sheet. um But you know with that match, we saw a lot of changes you know in terms of tactics compared to the Chelsea match and personnel um who started the match, subs that we saw. What stuck out to you the most in terms of style of play or individual performances?
00:16:17
Speaker
um The biggest thing that surprised me was actually not Aston Villa, it was about Brentford. Brentford have done extremely well this season at pressing high and forcing teams into mistakes in the back and I've been a massive critique of our players, the way we've been playing at the back recently. And also the Premier League in general, because I feel like it's the the in thing that everyone has to play out from the back. The decision making behind it seems idiotic to be perfectly honest at times, because we saw a couple of times in the Brentford game where Martinez played a long direct accurate pass into Duran and into Watkins.
00:17:03
Speaker
that really broke Brentford apart so excuse me it does surprise me that when you have that ability you don't use it more often because if you vary the play then a long ball will make the opposition drop deeper which gives you more opportunity to play short from the back you play short out from the back you invite the play in you play direct you find more space up top so the one thing as i was mentioning before i kind of went on a tangent there was that uh Brentford were very successful at pressing out pressing from the front and against a Villa team that has been seen as vulnerable at playing out from the back. Bremford set up in a mid block which allowed us a lot more time on the ball in the defensive half which I couldn't understand the logic there other than maybe Thomas Frank was thinking
00:17:50
Speaker
that a lot of games in concession we need to arrest players, we need to hold back and see what Villa is going to give us. But it gave us more time on the ball and that really benefited us because we played more of our comfortable controlling possession, slow methodical play that Emory really pushes for the Villa to play. And the biggest rung from the Villa side was the fact that We counted after the counter very well. Most of our attacks happened when Brentford were breaking on us. We won the ball and then we quickly transferred. And that's where most of the play happened for Villa. And that's how we were able to get in behind Brentford. Because as we've spoke about many times on the podcast, we struggle against teams that defend in deep.
00:18:42
Speaker
But recently we've actually struggled against teams that pressed really high against us as well. So the fact that we found that team that was willing to meet us in the middle actually really benefited us. And, uh, yeah, we took advantage of it. That's a really great point. And, you know, that's, I'd like to know what's going on in the manager's head there because you're seeing, if you see the results, you see the play from the match against Chelsea, I'm high pressing. If I'm managing a team, I'm high pressing, like let's go after them.
00:19:11
Speaker
um But like you said, they chose to sit in that mid block. And I think, like you said, we were quick on the transition, which means that, you know, once the place spread out, we have that space where we can exploit. So I think, you know, like you said, burying up whether we're going long, playing out of the back will give us those gaps between the lines where we can um play the way that Villa plays and and get forward so hopefully I'd like to see more of that against Southampton I'm not sure you know what their tactics will be quite just yet we'll have to wait and see but it would be I think worth kind of taking that into the match in terms of tactics and how we can break them down did anyone stand out to you in terms of individual performances in the match or just overall happy with everyone or yeah you see me smiling because like
00:20:05
Speaker
I was over the moon when I saw that Mingz was starting. And this is not any insult to Paul Torres because I think Paul Torres has been one of our most consistent players. Yes, he did struggle and we mentioned that earlier against Chelsea, but he's been an ever-present player for a long time. But I i just feel that defence is so strong when Mingz is at the back.
00:20:27
Speaker
I think him and Khan's have a great partnership together and seeing him there, chewing his gum and all, where it just seems like nothing bothers the guy. I i love love the guy to death and I think he really helps our back line. So to hit have him back there was a very nice thing to see and I do think our defense really benefited from seeing him there.
00:20:52
Speaker
Absolutely. And I think that was the kind of homecoming, if you will, that we all sort of expected um to see. So I'm really glad for him, um for him to get that performance. I was going to say, in terms of other players that stand it out and stand it out for good reasons. yeah He stand it out for bad reasons with his lightest haircut, which I'm certainly not a big fan of. But his performance again, Morgan Rogers,
00:21:19
Speaker
k can't say enough of the guy. he He's finished was fantastic and that's the only critique that we've all had here at the ah GSPM Daily Villa is that he's finishing and he really proved he can do it right there and then because that was a beauty of the goal.
00:21:36
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, shut everybody up. hey i Can't really say much about that. Yeah. Now just yeah. Top top corner, but also curled. So that's Morgan Rogers doing this thing now. So I'll be expecting that going forward. You set the bar yes pleasure and hopefully we'll see that again quite often.

Global Sports Podcast Network, every club, every day. Welcome back. We do have a crossover episode coming out with GSPN Daily Southampton, as Craig mentioned before. So if you're wanting a bit more in-depth coverage from both teams in terms of a preview, go ahead and give that one a listen. Craig, what can you tell us about Match Week 15?
00:22:56
Speaker
It's going to be an interesting one. I think this is a real one that is going to dictate how we go into December. I think with two wins under our belt going into the the ah run of games that is going to be tiring on the legs.
00:23:10
Speaker
But as a player, you know that those tiring legs are not as tired when you're on victories. It's as simple as that. So you get through this time of time with a couple of victories under your belt and concentrate on the next game. It's going to be very beneficial to our season and.
00:23:27
Speaker
One of the things that we spoke about recent just earlier on in the episode was about how is this going to impact us at the end of the season? And I really think this December period is going to be very important to us at the end of the season. It was about this time last year when we beat both Arsenal and City in the same week.
00:23:48
Speaker
And that really helped us build our momentum going into the so that bulk of the season. um So it's going to be a very important one this weekend. Absolutely. I think, like you said, it's a really good way to kind of go into the new year, go into the second half of the season on a high note.

Southampton Match Preview

00:24:06
Speaker
It's another home match at Villa Park. What do you expect to see from Villa? You mentioned um lots of matches coming up and maybe some tired legs and everything's always a bit better when you're winning. But do you expect to see anything more like squad rotation? What are you expecting style of play to be, energy levels? What are your thoughts?
00:24:27
Speaker
I would say the style of play is not going to change much. um I think he has a certain way to play and it's been successful for the most part. I have been a bit critical of needing that plan B against teams that won't allow us to play so calm, so casual, so collective.
00:24:44
Speaker
um But I feel our style of play won't be really changing. I i don't i would expect against Southampton for us to ah p apply at high press because of Southampton, even more so than Villa, have really struggled with playing out from the back. They get caught all the time um in those situations with a manager that refuses to change by the sounds of it, so we have to exploit that.
00:25:10
Speaker
In terms of squad rotation, I would not be surprised if there was a lot of changes for this game. And I don't think that is us taking Southampton lightly because we're in a league where you literally can't do that because they will punish you.
00:25:25
Speaker
But um I think he's going to use this game to talk to a couple of players about quote unquote resting them because they haven't been performing as well recently. So I wouldn't be surprised that Philogene will start ahead of bay like Bailey. Bailey had a decent game against Brentford. It wasn't terrible, but still hasn't reached the heights that he's been accustomed to last season.
00:25:51
Speaker
I know. So I'll just jump in there quickly. Sorry. So that's a really good point. So we, uh, Philagene started against Chelsea and then we saw, was it Bailey start against Brentford? So, you know, going off of those two performances heading into Southampton, you would go ahead and assume that Philagene would start. I do. I think Philogene will be given the nod, uh, one because Bayley hasn't been performing, but I think it's also, he's had a lot of minutes. Uh, so lots of tired legs. So I think he would need it. okay Um, I also think Tealumans might be given a rest. Tealumans has been praised a lot by myself and all of us at the GSPN, um, daily Bella.
00:26:35
Speaker
ah However, recent weeks he hasn't looked up to it and I think his legs are tired and I think that's the main reason he has been ever present for a lot of games now. So I wouldn't be surprised to see Barkley in there. And the other one that I don't know whether it happened, but it's in the back of my mind based on an interview that Unai Emery had this past week, where he said he is ready to let Wendia in for Morgan Rogers.
00:27:00
Speaker
And, um, because Morgan Rogers, again, just like Tillamans has been an ever present player for a long time now, he's actually been one of those players I've highlighted as being.
00:27:12
Speaker
making Villa better when he's on the field, the way he runs at defenders, drags defenders out of positions, creates space for Ali and Duran when he's on the field. So if he does start, I would expect Wendia to be used at some point. If we end up with a comfortable win, I would expect Wendia to be used a lot earlier and often.

Match Predictions and Risks

00:27:33
Speaker
And the only other one that could be quote unquote controversial um would be I expect Mings to retain his position.
00:27:40
Speaker
Um, which I agree. Yeah. So, uh, so to sum up, I think the lineup would be, uh, Martin is in goal cash, right. Back, uh, concert and mings in the center backs, Luca Dean on the left, Phila Jean on the right. Uh,
00:27:59
Speaker
begin on the left, Barclay and Kamara in the middle and then I would say it's a catastrophe between Rogers and Buendia to start and then Ollie Watkins up front. Do you see any anything differently I know?
00:28:14
Speaker
Um, I think you're spot on. I think, uh, Rogers would start, I think kind of the subs that we talked about would probably come on earlier, maybe at halftime, um, rather than into second half. But I still would expect the same fiery start that we saw with Brentford. So maybe not too many changes to the 11, but definitely subs early on, I would expect. That makes sense.
00:28:40
Speaker
And with that, any score predictions? so Who do we think is going to get on the sheet? Are we going to get a clean sheet? Oh man, here's the thing. My heart wants to tell you one thing and my head's telling you another. So classic. Exactly. My heart is looking for, like I said earlier, that dominant performance, that three nil victory. Um, but my head is being a lot more cautious. I'm thinking it will be a two one win. Um, because I do think we struggle to keep clean sheets, but we are playing, I believe the least American goal scored in the premier league, uh, team at the moment who are really struggling to generate attack.
00:29:18
Speaker
So for this one, someone let my heart roll over my head. Uh, I'm going to say Ali Watkins with a brace and, um, I'll go with, um, Morgan Rogers to get another one. Okay. Fair enough. Um, I'll go with something, maybe, maybe some last goal, maybe like a two nil. I'd like to see a two nil score line. Uh, I'll go with Ali Watkins and I'll say John McGinn. I don't know why I just always kind of cheer for him. So anytime he's on the ball, I'm like, shoot.
00:29:47
Speaker
We know about me. Yeah, have to. I actually think and maybe this is controversial. virtual I don't know. But I think it's a bit mad that Martinez is still in goal. I know it's just they mentioned a hairline fracture in his finger, which is not that big of a deal, I guess. But you're also risking making that into not a hairline fracture.

Conclusion and Listener Engagement

00:30:06
Speaker
So the fact that we're playing our keeper with the hairline fracture rather than putting in our number two or three is a bit.
00:30:15

um I also want to know, is that a massive compliment to Martinez? Or is that a big critique of our number two? Yeah, it's a case of like, everyone wants Martinez in gold. But like, look at Liverpool, for example, Liverpool have not suffered since Alison went out. Keller's been on fire. So if we could find a young keeper, I don't know if Gauci is the answer for that.

but like if we can find a young keeper that's willing to sit there and do the work but then we can call upon him I know obviously that's like trying to find a yeah needle in a haystack or find that one ru of one smooth diamond you know what I mean it's it's a tough one but I do agree with you, it is a risk and at what point do we say enough's enough and he's got to rest it and get it get it clear because... I mean at at this level you know the players are, there they they want to play. I mean at the end of the day no matter what level is you want to play and you know I've had teammates, I've done it myself where it's like

Probably shouldn't be playing but you're just so set on no, it's fine. I know my body I can do it um But I think I think like you said, we just need to find like a Morgan Rogers goal of a goalkeeper Where we just pick them up and all of a sudden they're a big villa star for us and they come in and do well So hopefully the recruiting team is on that. Well, we've got a good recruiting team So if they're if anyone's on the pace they are so

Amazing. So Craig, any final thoughts heading into this match? No, I just hope we really go all out for it. Pick up that victory and move into, I believe, Champions Leagues after that. So build some momentum going into that and take just take care of business.
