every club every day the global sports podcast network work hello and welcome to today's episode of the daily villa podcast as part of the global sports podcast network my name is craig burtsall and i'm delighted to be joined by dan tilly and joe boone how you doing today dan I'm doing great. I'm um a lot happier after that much needed victory against Leicester and looking forward to the second half of the season. Fantastic. How about you, Joe? I'm very well, mate. Very much the same. Happy after a win. Excited to ah delve
Post-Holiday Blues and Transfer Rumors

Speaker
into the squad a little bit. but Fantastic. Well, the Christmas tree has gone back in the loft. The champagne from New Year's has gone flat and most of us have already given up on those resolutions. We're all the depressed. depressed
00:00:54
Speaker
You've got to be in January, but fear not. We're going to get you through those blues with a different type of episode. Today is the transfer window. Yes. It's that time of year where we get like linked with everyone and anyone. So basically if they're walking, talking, we get linked with them.
00:01:09
Speaker
so you don't know what's legit and what is like something you stepped on in the high street. Today, we're going to talk about our current squad, where we decide a 25
Keeper Decisions: Who Starts?
00:01:18
Speaker
-man squad. The rules are simple. We say a name, we can either start them, sub them, sell them, or loan them. Dan, let's start with the simple ones, our keepers. We have Martinez, Olsen, and Gauci. How are you feeling about them? Well, I think certainly start speaks for itself.
00:01:37
Speaker
So obviously start with Martinez. I think this is going to be really interesting as to Emory's long term plans. so um I'm going to sub Gauchy and I'm going to add a slightly different a category if I can. um I knew we'd do this on the first one. But I'm going to let Olsen's contract expire because I believe no one's going to buy him and it's the last of his, I think he's just got mumps with us. So let him go. dan and Joe, any thoughts?
00:02:11
Speaker
Yeah, I agree. I think Martin has has has obviously got to start. I don't think there'll be anyone listening that disagrees with that. If they do, I think we've got a question their state of of watching the villa.
00:02:22
Speaker
ah I'd sub Joe Gauci, I think he's got an interesting long-term future at the club. We haven't really seen much of him, so I think it would be interesting to see where he kind of fits in. And then yeah if anyone wants to give us anything for Olsen, we'll take it. I think any sort of financial gain from him would be ah would be great.
00:02:42
Speaker
Yeah, I ever seen Nelson might be running his career down. It might, might end up just becoming a coach, a goalie coach at the Villa soon, or just as that Dan said, just stepping aside. So I'd agree. It'd be Martinez on the field, Gauche on the bench.
Right Back Selection: Cash and Contenders
00:02:56
Speaker
So we'll go on to our right back position, which has been a position for much debate over the past few months. So our right back options, and we'll start with you, Joe, is Cash, Nidalkovic and Bogard.
00:03:11
Speaker
Yeah, so I would start ah Matty Cash as and when he's fit and able. I think he brings a lot of balance to that backline when he plays. He's a goal threat from the defence, which is something we don't really have on that right side. And yeah, I've been impressed with him recently when he's kind of played.
00:03:28
Speaker
Bogard are probably subbed just because I think he offers a bit more versatility than Nedelkovich. I think he can play in a few different positions and he's looked pretty solid and Nedelkovich who I think is arguably a better right back than Bogard but probably won't get the minutes that I think I would like to see him have. Emery doesn't seem to fully trust him yet so I think a lone move would really suit him maybe to the championship or maybe somewhere in Europe.
00:03:56
Speaker
Dan, any thoughts on that? um yeah I mean, we've we've got to start with Matti Cash, dependent on what happens in January. um I personally, though, would sub Nadavkovic and I would loan Bogard out.
00:04:14
Speaker
Interesting. I actually mean, as a trust, trying to build a squad out of the players that we've got and those being the three options, I actually agree. I think the Delkovich is a better right back, but I do agree that Bogard does offer us a bit more stability in different positions. ah You can play holding me can play right back. So we might not need that stability, but it is good for us to nurture that player. That's like the ability player um under our,
00:04:43
Speaker
own wagon, if you will, like rather than loading them out and then playing under a different style and
Center Back Strategy and Departures
00:04:50
Speaker
so on. So moving on, we'll go into the centre backs position. This one's a really tough one. So we've got Kanza, Carlos,
00:05:00
Speaker
Tyrone Mings, Torres, and a forgotten man in Courtney Horse, who is still at the club, I believe. I think he was cleaning the dressing room out in the last one. But I don't think he's getting much minutes on the field. So for me, I think it's an obvious one that Courtney Horse, it's probably time to drop down a division, try and get him some minutes play time. Maybe he could get a good good mid to mid to top championship team. So I think that's an easy one there. And then we've only got four left to be perfectly honest. this So I think Currently we keep all four.
00:05:33
Speaker
um because we need that back up in those positions. However, and we'll get into talking about targets or positions of strength later on. But for me, the weakest out of the four is Diego Carlos. He's getting up there in age, i' not exactly old by any stretch as this 42 year old person there can attest to. But he's certainly not old, but as in terms of development and playing for the future, I think he's the one that will probably be moving on next. Do you have any thoughts on any of that?
00:06:04
Speaker
Yeah, I agree with that. I think Courtney Hawes has probably kind of came to the end of his Villa career now. I think we've got fond memories of him against Man United scoring and some of his his championship quality in that kind of centre-back role. But yeah, I think it's probably time for him to step down now. I agree that we then are left with four and I think I'm pretty happy to to keep those four. The only thing really is if if a figure came in for Carlos that was kind of too good to turn down, I think,
00:06:33
Speaker
there's been rumors of Fenabakche kind of sniffing around with 12, 13 million quid, which I actually think is quite good value for an ageing centre-half. So I wouldn't be kind of disappointed for that figure, but I think it would have to be a ah sum of money that would be too good to turn down. Dan? I can't disagree with anything that you guys have said. I think, you know, Conza certainly starts in just about any team in the Premier League. Carlos, I think if someone offers you a fiver, take the money and run. um With Mings and Torres, that's the rotation for your squad. um And, bless them, Courtney, yeah, just end the pain now. Time to move on. Yeah, couldn't agree more. And just out of curiosity, who do we start, Mings or Torres?
00:07:31
Speaker
I think that all depends on the type of game you're playing. If you think that you're going to be um up against it and you need a good leader at the back, I think you go for mings. If you're hoping to have more of a ball and starting attacks from defence, I'd go with Torres.
00:07:51
Speaker
Any update on that, Joe? Yeah, no, I'll sit on the fence too. I think I completely agree. um I think they're both great at different things. I think they both have really kind of individual skill sets. And I think it's it's quite a nice problem to have really. To be fair to Dan, he did explain his situation rather than just sit on the fence, but I definitely understand where you're coming from. So moving on, Dan, um we go over to our left back position. We've got Luca Dean and Ian Mattson.
00:08:20
Speaker
ah I mean, you brought up a fantastic idea in the previous episode what um of actually having Mattson slightly further up the pitch, so that's thrown everything for me, quite frankly. um I think Dania is a fantastic player. Mattson seems to have a little bit more grit for me and a little bit more energy, but I'd i'd start with Dania and sub Mattson. Any thoughts on that, Joe?
00:08:49
Speaker
Yeah, I agree. I think Luca Dean's been one of the kind of standout players from our season so far. I think Mattson definitely has a long-term future at Villa and I'm excited to see what he kind of brings both were at left back and maybe further forward in the future. Okay, and we'll be back to talk about our midfield after a short.

Bailey's Start and Philogene's Future
00:09:52
Speaker
Welcome back. Today, we're talking about our squad and what changes that we feel we need to make. Next up, we talk about one of our areas that we spoke about a lot on this podcast, which is the right side of midfield, or right wing, depending on what system we're using at given time. So, Dan, thoughts on Bailey and Philogene?
00:10:13
Speaker
I mean, when when Bailey is on top of his game, I think he's almost unplayable. I really like him. He's obviously gone through some rough patches, but we've seen what a player he can be. And when he's playing well, we are a much better squad. So um I'm starting with Bailey and I'm actually going to sell Philaging.
00:10:37
Speaker
that there we go. There was some raised eyebrows there, but i yeah, we'll get onto it further in the episode, but I think he's raised his run with us a little bit.
00:10:50
Speaker
that edge jar ah Yeah, I'm going to also start Bailey. um I think exactly what Dan said. I think when he's at the top of his game, we look up a complete outfit going forward. And I think is some of the qualities that he has isn't necessarily something that we've got an abundance of in this squad in terms of kind of pace and and trickery.
00:11:10
Speaker
I am a big Philogene fan so I really like what he brings, I really like the potential that he has being so young and we've seen kind of in glimpses in the Champions League exactly how good he can be at such a young age. so I would sub him personally. He kind of brings pace off the bench against sides that have maybe tired, especially in their backline, having Philogene come on and run it, you can be quite a a scary thing. So yeah, I'd sub Philogene and start lately. And as this is a three man conversation, we'll go majority rules on this. And I'm like Joe, I'm actually a big Philogene fan. however
00:11:52
Speaker
With the weaknesses we have um in certain areas in the team, and we'll get into this a little bit later with FFP, um I feel like some players, well, Emory's already said some players will have to go, so I think it does make sense to sell for the gene. Unfortunately, I don't really want to, and I'll get into that issue again later, but to bring some of that muchy need in in order to negotiate for other positions. so So, so we'll keep Bailey and for the gene is currently on the for sale category. Okay, so now we get into the meat and gravy of it. We talked about ascentre mids.
Midfield Choices: Balancing the Squad
00:12:35
Speaker
Four players that I'm mentioning, and basically we have space for all four, in my opinion. We've got Ross Barkley, Yura Tillman, Onana, and Kamara. I think all four give us different um outlooks, and I think all four have shown to be very good players. So for me, I would start Onana and Tillman's, even though I feel like Kamara has had exceptionally last couple of weeks, um and I would bench Barkley and Kamara. What's your thoughts, Dan?
00:13:06
Speaker
um It's not too much of a change other than ah I would love Anana and start Kamara. I'm a big Kamara fan. I think he is a really technically gifted footballer where Anana seems to be much more, um you know, ah much more of a grit physical player. So I certainly think we keep all four. um I certainly wouldn't look to be selling any of them.
00:13:38
Speaker
I just feel that Oh Nana, for example, I think the physical presence in the midfield and for set pieces and the reason he gets the nod for me, but there is certain games where Mara would be a better, better call. Um, Joe, you're the deciding vote on this one.
00:13:55
Speaker
Yeah this is probably the the toughest area to kind of decide who goes and where because you can kind of shuffle people about to try and grab people into the team but as we know there are players that work kind of better in different positions. I'm going to, obviously I'm gonna keep all four I think that goes without saying, I'm gonna go for Kamara and tea lemons is what I'm going off for. I think you've got a good balance there of a of kind of defensive mobility in Kamara. I also like tea lemons in as a 10. I think we've seen it a couple of times this season. I think it works quite well with Onala and Kamara sat in behind but then you've got a kind of crowbar Rogers in there.
00:14:41
Speaker
and McGinn and it's it's so difficult to kind of get all the ah quality in there. But yeah, think ah go kumar and see I I'd agree with that the fact that there's so much flexibility with so many players in this. You know, like McGinn can play on the left, he can play in the middle, he can play as a 10. Tealemann's similar, Rodger's similar. So there's definitely room, like we're we're nitpicking a bit because like as even though left back position as Dan said earlier, we could have Mattson play on the left mid, Dean plays in. So it's getting a kind of understanding of the base of the team. But yeah, so much flexibility, which is really good to see there. So moving forward on up the field, we go to the left hand side and we've got McGinn and Ramsey. Joe, what are you thinking?
00:15:28
Speaker
Yeah it's an interesting one because neither of these players I suppose are like, they weren't kind of originally left sided players. mc Beginners obviously played a lot more as a centimetre. Ramsey kind of drifts inside as well. ah Obviously I'm keeping both. um It's a really tough one because I think Ramsey arguably suits the role better.
00:15:50
Speaker
but McGinn is club captain, I think he's such a big presence on the pitch, I think he kind of brings that organisation to the midfield a lot of the time, he can trigger the press really well, so it's a really tough one, I think on pure ability to play the left mid-roll, I would start Ramsey and sub McGinn.
00:16:10
Speaker
Dan, Ford? Well, I mean I'm a massive Ramsey fan. I think he's vital really to Villa. I really like him and I think we're a much poorer side when he's not in not with us. However, I can't Imagine now a Villa squad without John McGinn and his rear end. I think it gives us so much strength in that sort of um coming inside from the win. I'm going to go the opposite way around. I'm going to start McGinn and sub Ramsey.
00:16:51
Speaker
Yeah, for me, it's a case of based on the way we play with Luca Dean pushing up high all the time. I feel like we need someone that naturally converts to the middle. So I think a begin does make sense for that. I also and the.
00:17:07
Speaker
People see this as an insult when I'd rather put them on the bench, but sometimes it really isn't. When you're a utility player like Ramsey that can play on the left, can play as a 10, it's so good being able to bring that player off off the bench. and Certain days you want to start him, he's a player that deserves to be started. But when you're getting into the realms of playing in the Champions League, competing on all fronts,
00:17:31
Speaker
you do want that player that can come off the bench and make an impact what we've seen with Duran over the past few weeks and so on. So I'm agreeing with Dan, but obviously both team both players make my squad. Absolutely. So they agree. So then we go up to the number 10 role and we have Wendia and Morgan
Rogers vs. Buendia: Who Fits In?
00:17:52
Speaker
Rogers. So Dan. Well, um I mean, I'm a ah massive Wendia fan. I think my My podcast and debut with you guys was ah reviewing the Wickham game, where he scored, and it brought me such joy that I was able to comment on that. But I think Emery has seen enough of him, and he I don't think he fancies him. So I'm going to go with Rogers. It's hardly a surprise, um but the surprise maybe is that I would sell Buendia.
00:18:32
Speaker
joe Yeah, I don't think that's that much of a surprise because I do feel i think I really like when there I think he has a lot of great qualities. I think when we brought him in there was a lot of excitement surrounding him he was kind of ah a personification of where the club was moving he was a statement signing bringing him in for a lot of money.
00:18:53
Speaker
And we've had some great moments with him, but I ultimately think, you know, as we mentioned in the midfield, McGinn, Rams and East Heelamans can play in that 10. Rodgers, we've got a lot of players who can do that role and do it arguably better. So I think with FFP kind of regulations, I think you've got a cash-in somewhere. And for me, it would be Emmy Puendia. Yeah, I can't really argue it because I know it's, yeah, that's a surprise myself. Yeah.
00:19:23
Speaker
I feel that he's had plenty, Emery's had plenty of opportunities to practice. He's had plenty of chances to bring him on. Obviously he's injured, hampered the start of his season, but we're now into January. You would have expected him to see more minutes if he was in Emery's plans. So yeah I doubt him seeing him go in January because I don't know whether clubs will take that risk because he isn't much fit, he isn't ready.
00:19:47
Speaker
and I don't think he can go but I do think long term plans he's best suited at a different club so yeah definitely agree with that and then we get up to our fun positions and we'll start with you Joe.
Watkins or Duran: Impact Players
00:20:02
Speaker
ran or wakin Yeah, obviously we're keeping both. um I think they're both excellent players. Again, it comes back to that having two brilliant players that can do different things in the same role. um I am going to keep the faith and start Ollie Watkins and bring Duran off the bench. Dan. Excuse me. Yeah, I'm going I'm going the same. um I don't think we can forget what Ollie Watkins has done for us. um you know He seems to be going through a slight lean patch at the moment, but it's ah we know the player that's there. um So I'm going to start Watkins and Sub-Duran, but whether or not that would be the same for next season, I think is the real interesting conversation.
00:20:59
Speaker
I agree. um they I think this is the one of the few that we're very consistent on. I was expecting more of a debate on this one, if I'm perfectly honest. But I do agree. I think Watkins on form, we've mentioned do being a confidence player. When he's on form, he gets the team ticking. I do think, again, similar to rod to Ramsey, when I mentioned earlier about him coming off the bench, I think there's a sense of energy when Duran comes off the bench as opposed to when Watkins comes off the bench.
00:21:28
Speaker
I feel Watkins needs minutes under his belt to get comfortable. Whereas I think Duran could switch it on like a light switch. I really do. He comes on the field, it changes things. And again, kind of like we said with Mattson and Dean earlier, I've got no problem with starting both as well when the certain games come in. Because if you look at the stats, both of them have done well with assists this season as well. It's not as if one of them is particularly greedy and it won't work. I feel like the two can play together. so that's definitely an interesting one so all right great stuff gentlemen we picked our 22 and when we come back after a short break we'll talk about those areas of weakness

Strengthening the Squad: Right Wing and FFP
00:22:42
Speaker
We've been talking about our squad with the players we have in depth. So now it's time to talk about where we need to strengthen. What areas do we want to see improved? Also, we've been told now that FFP will be a major factor yet again. So we do need to sell in order to have money coming in, in order to buy players.
00:23:00
Speaker
So Dan, let's start with you. Where do you want to see strengthened? We've obviously based on our discussion We need a right-winger according to like our math as well as well as a number 10 With when they are moving on so are those the two areas you were thinking of going into this or is there other areas you would concentrate on?
00:23:22
Speaker
Well, I think with the number 10, we've seen that Thielemans and McGinn can fill in there, so I'm not too worried about the number 10 role. um I think a right back that we truly trust as an option to Matty Cash is is by, should be the top target. You know, I can't say that strongly enough. And I mean, it's it's not been long ago that we've been rumored with a chap called Oscar from South of Ego. I'm not going to pronounce his second name because I will totally butcher it. But that seems really interesting. um And further up the pitch, having been linked with, is it Donny Marlin from Brescia Dortmund? That seems really exciting to me as well.
00:24:09
Speaker
um There is a nasty rumour going round that Douglas Louise has been approached by several Premier League clubs. I don't know if that could be us trying to rekindle an old flame. I think the time though has passed for that as much as I love him as a player. But ah a right back um I think is crucial and someone to give a bit of competition to Bailey, but could potentially play on the opposite wing as well.
00:24:40
Speaker
Joe, your thoughts? Yeah, they were the kind of the two ah the the two positions, I suppose, right back and and and slightly further forward. And the two players that we've been linked to, Donnell Mallon from Dortmund, obviously quite an exciting player, um kind of struggled a little bit this year in terms of his actual output, his kind of end product, um sort of in the same similar sense as both the Bailey in terms of ah a form player, somebody who can kind of has streaks of ah amazing performances and then kind of dips off which is maybe not the sort of consistency that we'd be looking for in the second half of the season and especially with FFP we've got to be so kind of careful with every penny that we spend on a player.
00:25:21
Speaker
And then, again, we've got we've been linked to Oscar Mingheiser I'm going to go for. I'm going to attempt it and hope I'm just wearing the right ballpark, um who is a kind of centre-back, right-back, come-right midfielder. He plays in a kind of three-at-the-back system on the right-hand side for Celta Vigo. Probably been asked to do a bit more of it ah an advanced job this season than he kind of normally has to, but I think because of a backup right-back option, he they don't come much, much better. out I believe he started out in the Barcelona Lemacia Academy so he's kind of played with and and grown in an environment around some of the ah the kind of top Spanish vendors so yeah I think that's a really exciting one especially if that it financially adds up. Yeah I i agree I think the main areas of
00:26:10
Speaker
improvement needed is our right back and our right midfield. I'm not a big fan of buying a squad player, so I would rather bring someone in that would force either Cash or Bailey to step their game up or just basically be replaced. So I definitely want to bring in. The Marlin one surprises me a lot because we've already got Watkins and Duran who are both competing head to head about getting in.
00:26:37
Speaker
And with FFP being an issue where we have to sell players. So for example, if we're selling Philogene, but bringing in Malon, it doesn't make sense for balance for me because now like our right side rarely gets injured. We're having to like square pegs in round holes you and yet we've got two strikers on the bench. So that one for me, unless there's a ah bigger picture where Is Watkins going to Arsenal, for example, or is Durango in a pat PSG? All these rumours that I hope none of them are true. To be perfectly honest, I'd rather keep both than bring Malin in. So I hope that hope those issues are ah just made up like we see a lot in the press. So I do think all our focus and our attention should be on bringing in a right back and a right midfielder.
00:27:28
Speaker
So, okay, gentlemen, so we've basically picked our team. So if we can bring in a right back and a right midfielder in the, in the January transfer window, we're obviously coming back with a champion seed trophy. So, uh, fingers
FFP and Club Growth Challenges
00:27:42
Speaker
crossed you anyway. So, uh, this is our final four. I'm going to go into a little rant here and I just kind of want Joe and Dan's opinion on this.
00:27:52
Speaker
FFP is being a major issue for Villa in bringing players in. We have ambitious owners, we have financial income, we have a great manager, we have great recruitment staff, but this new rule, this new condition that is hanging over our head, I feel is stopping us from growing and I feel it's the same thing for Newcastle and I think it's the same thing for a bunch of other clubs and this has come in was the intent behind FFP was to make sure that it was an even playing field but I think now instead of it being an even playing field I think it's harming the smaller clubs more than it's harming the bigger clubs so I think there's time for a big change in football that this needs to be re-looked at reworked because again
00:28:43
Speaker
you You need to cancel the whole thing if if Man City aren't going to get punished for anything for their 115 conditions, but yet we still hear that Everton are going to get minus points, Leicester are going to get minus points. With this hanging over us, it feels like it's really unfair to those teams that are trying to get into that upper a launch of the league. Dan, Joe, let's start with you, Joe. Any thoughts on that?
00:29:08
Speaker
Yeah, I agree with that. I think FFP is a ah flawed system in the sense of its it's seemingly there to protect the elite kind of clubs in football and it makes it very hard for any sort of mobility, consistent mobility and it makes it difficult for kind of those clubs to establish themselves. I think we're going to see a lot of chopping and changing amongst the the Europe kind of positions due to FFP. It's going to be very difficult to do exactly what Villa want to do in the sense of getting in those European positions and then establishing yourselves. I think if you look at a lot of our business specifically in the past year, you know you've got the Douglas Louise deal which is believed to be, I think it was in the region of sort of 40 million quid, the DRB deal which was very lucrative with him after Saudi, you had the Grealish deal which we don't know exactly where kind of all that money went in terms of
00:30:00
Speaker
Obviously, we're replacing kind of that money. So, you know, we've we've definitely had our fair share of sales Cameron Archer was another one to Southampton Tim, o hit Tim Irrige Boone and went for a decent price tag as well. So we definitely sold our way. And I think it's sort of we're at a point now where, you know, yes, we brought in your own honors and your maxons for money, but the the figures don't add up. And I do think there is or there should be more of a more leeway for us this window than maybe kind of there seems to be or or even potentially maybe we're being told because I think its it it seems very tight lipped from kind of all areas in terms of what we have to spend and exactly where the kind of the profits of that we have made have gone.
00:30:48
Speaker
Dan, anything to add? I'm just recovering from a bit of sick in my mouth, hearing a rumour of Watkins to Arsenal. That was horrifying. um I think, Craig, you've hit the nail on the head and this is stopping growth.
00:31:02

and When Villa qualified for the Champions League and within minutes later we're talking about selling one of our stars, that cannot be right. eight eight It just can't be and I believe it was set up with good intentions but it was set up years too late. We'd already gone into the Super Six So to try and give fair play throughout the squad, it's shutting the stable doors after the horse has bolted. And it has now just protected the big six, which we might as well have the Super League if that's the way we're going to continue. And that that's very sad for me. And it's I think it's sad for the English game. And this is the first time that I've seen Villa in a place where they can spend money.

you know I grew up with Doug Ellis, who just about spent money on packs of peanuts at the bar. It's an opportunity for us to really go and improve a squad and break that big set the so-called big stick, big sticks. And I think it's very sad that we can't. Same with Newcastle, a fantastic history-driven club.

ah that can't continue to grow. So I think it's a really flawed system that we need to get scrapped as soon as possible. And if Man City don't have any charges actually brought against them, then we might as well knock it all on the head now. There you go. And on that bright note, it's time to end the episode.
