Introduction and Match Overview

Speaker
Every club. Every day. The Global Sports Podcast Network. Hi everyone and welcome back to Daily Villa. I'm joined by Craig here today. My name is Nyla and we are going to be reviewing the FA Cup fourth round match between Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur.
00:00:26
Speaker
So we are through to the fifth round for the first time in a long time with the 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Villa Park. How are you feeling about this Craig? I'm doing well. The fact that I've got three boys and the fact that the oldest one's 13. So two of which have not seen us being the next round of the FA Cup in their lifetime. So it is very good to be in the hat for the next round and hoping for a non-premium league team this side. Hope fingers crossed.
00:00:56
Speaker
Yeah, I think I know when we drew Spurs, I went like, really? Of all the the clubs still left in the competition, really. But then you look at the um Plymouth and Liverpool result there. Liverpool's knocked out, so they will not be, you know, getting four titles this season. So it really is kind of, you say, the magic of the FA Cup. um But I don't feel like there is any magic

Impact of Injuries and Key Performances

00:01:19
Speaker
today. I think Villa definitely earned the win and We know, you know, Tottenham are struggling at the moment with player a available availability, form, so on. But, you know, we also know that there's been quite a bit of movement late lately in the Villa roster and we're dealing with their own share of injuries. And did you expect to see any of this reflect on Villa's play, um individual performances, team performances?
00:01:47
Speaker
Well, I think Unai has always been very smart with that. I knew he wasn't going to throw all the new new guys straight into the lineup. He does like to slowly bring them into the team um to give kind of like a feel for how the team about ah team grows and understands his philosophies, his play. So I wasn't expecting any any any mistakes to happen based on lack of ability, lack of understanding. um I did worry when looking at that back line because it was the most makeshift back line I've ever seen in my life. And I want to publicly thank Kamara for being a centre back, but I hope that that time has come by the time we play Ipswich. How did you find it, Noah?
00:02:34
Speaker
Yeah, we'll get into that a little bit more lately with the the center backs. But I actually thought this could be something great for Villa. Obviously, you know, sad to see Duran go and and some of the other players that have left or gone on loan. But I also feel like bringing in the quality players that we have has sort of lit a fire under some players. Like now there's real proper competition in certain spots. And I just felt like say what you want about him, but I just felt like I saw a different side to Leon Bailey today um at times. And I don't know if that's because now he's got competition for his spot or not, but I think um it'll be exciting to see how that transpires over the rest of the season.
00:03:18
Speaker
So you brought up a great point, Craig, about Kamara in the back line. You know, 25 minutes in, we see Kanza, our remaining fit center half, go off and and be substituted for injury, and Bogard came on. But are we panicking about this? Like, is this terrible news going forward? I just... The back line, I think we've talked a lot over the course of this the podcast this season and it's just, is there like an end in sight or are we just going to have to struggle for the rest of the season? Like, what are you thinking?
00:03:52
Speaker
I, every single time one of our defenders went down, Konza in the first half, Luca Deem, when he got the head injury in the second half as well, like my heart's in my mouth, uh, thinking, well, there'll be any type of recovery. Um, hopefully that they can get back up. Um, Luca Deem wasn't as bad because I know we had Madison on the bench, which is a like for like change.
00:04:16
Speaker
But looking at our injuries, ah according to this, Cash, Torres, Barkley, and Mings are all listed to come in back mid-February. So that time can't come quick enough. Like I mentioned earlier on, Kamara um really needed to be back in the midfield and out of the center back position because there was a lot of times in today's game, even though I thought he did have a solid game.
00:04:39
Speaker
He was playing higher than the rest of the defense, which was leaving some gaps to play in, which was very dangerous on the Spurs team that's still good in attack. They might be struggling, but they get goals. I think there's only one other team in the Premier League that scored more goals than Spurs. So it shows how bad their defending is as opposed to any worries in attack. So to go back to your question, am I worried about the centre backs? Absolutely. I can't wait for Torres and Mings to be available to be fit.
00:05:08
Speaker
um Kanza, I think, was more of a precaution than anything. I don't think it's going to be something serious, so we he might have to miss Ipswich, but I don't think it would be a long absence at least.

Advertisements and Tactical Analysis

00:05:20
Speaker
Yeah, well, I hope not. I think Kamara, like you said, had a solid game. I think he's okay in the back line for us, but he's great in the midfield for us, and I think that could be um the differentiating factor in other matches against other um teams that we come up across. So fingers crossed, like you said, hopefully everyone's back sooner rather than later and they stay fit and solid. And we don't find ourselves in this position again ah for the rest of the season. um But we'll take a short break to hear this message from Zencaster.

All right, we are back at Daily Villa on the GSPN network. We'll break down the three goals that we saw today in the 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Villa Park. We'll start with the goal right at the beginning of the match, first, second minute. um We saw Ramsey put the ball in the goal after Rodgers was able to drive past a midfielder as he does, opening that space for Rodgers in the process.
00:07:13
Speaker
Um, he sent that through Walter Ramsey and he took a shot and the keeper did a poor job of handling that power. Um, and it just kind of deflected off his hands or he parried it and went right into the back of the net. But Craig, how good was it to see Villa off to a flying start for once?
00:07:38
Speaker
Oh, it was great. Um, so the fact that it time to took any fear away from you for at least a little bit, um, having that like buffer of that one goal. And with the way Tottenham's been playing of late, you did expect that it could be now a game that we've been crying out for a long time now, that three, four nil domination. Um, and obviously that wasn't to happen, but, um, it did give us a sign that it could at least.
00:08:09
Speaker
Yeah, absolutely. I think it's it's nice to be on the other end of it. I know sometimes we've struggled with conceding quite early. um But I also have to, you know, as a player, like for me, not that I'm putting everything into my first touch of the match, but like, usually I like to set the tone of a match, you know, I'm on edge a little bit until I have that first touch. And you know, for that to be Kinski's first touch, oof. Yeah, I think that was,
00:08:39
Speaker
it's it's You have to come back from that. like You've got 89 minutes to go, um but I think that was message to Villa to get some shots on goal, which we did, but not enough of. But we'll but jump to the second goal. 64th minute, um we saw Malin connect with Bailey um and get the cross in century where Rogers was able to hit it to the top corner after a failed clearance by Tottenham.
00:09:09
Speaker
We've seen, you know, some new connections there and perhaps we're starting to see some sort of relationships form up front. Like, does that excite you? Do you feel we could see more of Bailey Malin link up going forward? What are your thoughts with that? I know we're going to get more into Asenio and, um,
00:09:32
Speaker
I completely draw a blank there at his name, but like his name hasn't been in them in the papers all week, basically. So, but Rashford, yeah. I know we'll get into those names earlier, but yeah what's really exciting me is the fact that even though they've had so little time together, there seems to be genuine connections and chemistry between our players, which really excites me because I don't think even though we was there for a long period of time,
00:10:00
Speaker
when Dia had that with a certain amount of players. So I think when you look at the players that we've we've sent out and brought in, I think we look absolutely 80, 90% better already after just seeing like the last couple of games, like one game for the the new two that have just come in here. yeah But like Garcia for Ned Dalkevich, big upgrade for me. I think Garcia would look great.
00:10:29
Speaker
you've got um ah Duran's gonna be a miss, don't get me wrong, but Asensio when he came on looked absolutely phenomenal. Malon I think was a little hard done by that he had to go off, although I did make a note that when it come to his finishing that he was no John Duran. um So and we'll get into the quality of our thing later on. But yeah, I am extremely excited. What about you Nyla?
00:10:56
Speaker
Yeah, absolutely. I think, like you said, to see this so early on is fantastic. And it's testament to all the work that they're putting in at training. But I think, you know, I'd love to see that flourish. I think having different connections across the pitch, whether it's, you know, left side, right side, um just makes us more dangerous on the whole. um So that is something definitely I love to see.
00:11:20
Speaker
happen more and yeah yeah, I think it only makes us more ah strong and and cohesive.

Game Management and Critique

00:11:28
Speaker
um We move more as a unit, I feel like, in that sense. And it wouldn't be a typical villa match if we didn't look shaky in the last five to ten minutes, ah where we conceded a goal there um from, you know, just, I don't know, like a Pokken. It was a ah distance um
00:11:51
Speaker
cross, curled in, um and just t just was able to poke it into the back of the net. What what went wrong there? Is this the typical concentration? like Where did we break down?
00:12:05
Speaker
I think essentially we went to sleep on the goal. and The balls come in. I don't think it was Bogard that had the man originally, but he's cut across his run and wasn't picked up. He wasn't tracked by whoever had him originally. Bogard didn't pick him up once he was passed on. And as you say, it was like enough in finishing. It was very disappointing for that to go in because We're playing against a team that were ripe for the pickings. we We saw in the first half that we just didn't take our chances. We didn't take it to them quick enough. We had the we had very little, even some shot in the first half that Martinez performed a fantastic save. I think that was offside. It wasn't called back on or anything because it wasn't a goal. um But I think that was offside, but Martinez still had to make the save. Another great save there. He was called upon a few times.
00:12:59
Speaker
um But I think it's literally just we're playing square square pegs in round holes at the moment with Kamara in the back line. Bogard is young. I think he's going to be an exceptionally good player, but he needs a player next to him like a mings, like a Torres, like a Kanza, someone who can literally talk to him throughout the game, get his confidence up, let him get a good understanding. And as you know, as a player, just having that that player of maturity on your team that can help you reach that next level. And for him to come on, I'm not gonna, I'm not gonna begrudge him and call him solely out that it was his mistake because I do think he's kind of out of his depth for the moment in a good way. I'm not trying to say that in a negative way. I just think he needs time to grow. And the fact is that we've got Garcia who's been there. Was this his first or second game, full game? So we've got- Yeah, second one.
00:13:56
Speaker
second game yeah so you got Kanza come off which disrupted the plans we got a midfielder in centre back and it's just it's a big mess back there so I think again i know people will say our top men are really struggling but they're still not struggling going forward so we can't beat ourselves up too much about it uh we'll go back to your curse of the uh of the uh the clean sheets in a in a little bit but uh but yeah i think we shouldn't beat ourselves up at the end of the day we're in the next round it's not on goal difference and anything like that so we're in the next round uh we move on what did you think
00:14:33
Speaker
No, I completely agree. I think, you know, with tournament style football, it's survive in advance. So whatever it takes to get the three points to get into the next round is it's what's most important. It's just a bit disappointing. I felt like um Martinez did earn, you know, that clean sheet and I think it's a bit of game management for me, what it comes down to. You know a team like Spurs in a knockout competition is going to push and throw everything um forward in the last minutes to equalize, to get themselves back in the game. So I think just maybe recognizing that early, see where we can
00:15:09
Speaker
slow things down, take the time, time out, you know, tactical injury, I don't know. But, you know, just, just ways to, to run the clock a little bit and just really to settle, settle in with the the lead, the score.
00:15:25
Speaker
We will take a short break now to hear this message from the Global Sports Podcast Network. And then we'll be back to talk a little bit more about, um,
00:15:39
Speaker
some clinical finishing on the day and and other performances.

00:16:19
Speaker
As I alluded to before the message from GSPN, it was not the most clinical match at Villa Park. Craig, are you disappointed that Villa didn't put more goals away?
00:16:31
Speaker
100% I think this was a game that we could have took it to them in the first 20 minutes we had seven attempts on goal and only two of them were on target and Even though the other ones were close and narrow It just simply just wasn't good enough. We had the opportunity to put this game to bed against a team that was really shaky because you mentioned it earlier that about having a good first touch and you said that like the keeper's first touch was literally palming the ball into his own net.
00:17:04
Speaker
when that happens to a goalkeeper you can't let them get their mental state back you've got to hit every single shot at them and let's be perfect Frank even the goal from Ramsey was straight at him and should not have been a goal it shows that Ramsey's shooting is still not up to par in my opinion compared to the rest of his game I'm not being critical of that because he's the rest of his game is It's really stepping onto international levels now. to He's really, he was really strong today, but he's finishing again, was lackluster. I could say the same for in the first 20 minutes for Tealemans and Marlin. I think they had some golden opportunities where it literally could have been 4-0 at 20 minutes and we could have all sat back, put our feet up and just enjoyed the rest of the game then. Did you see it the same way, Nyla?
00:17:57
Speaker
Yeah, I completely agree. I think up there's going to be matches where we don't see these many opportunities. So just really being clinical on the day and finishing um whatever falls in front of us will be important moving forward.

New Player Contributions and Strategic Implications

00:18:11
Speaker
I felt like there was a few um ones where, you know, Ramsey got in behind, but couldn't quite convert like he's hitting. I don't know if he was trying to lift it over the keeper or kind of play it around him, but he just wasn't able to convert those into goals.
00:18:28
Speaker
which is disappointing because you know to break in and and to you know be one-on-one on the keeper most of the time and this will pay me to say it as a keeper is those should be goals Um, but yeah, like you said, I think overall, you know, there was a few other ones where I felt like we could have been a bit better. I felt like there was a few, um, plays where, you know, Bailey's turning over the ball when that doesn't really need to happen. Um, but like you said, you know, Teela men's melon, I think overall we can be a bit more threatening and we need to show that on the attack in terms of shots on goal and, and quality finishing.
00:19:11
Speaker
But on a more positive note, um as we mentioned a few times already, we had two massive debuts in the 65th minute with Rashford and Asensio coming on from Allen and Bailey. Craig, what are your thoughts initially on their performance? What was it like to see them in Clara in blue? um It was kind of surreal seeing Rashford in particular wearing Clara in blue. Just one of those players that you don't expect to have ever left Man United.
00:19:41
Speaker
For example, so when he came on, I so seen a ah energy for the team that increased again. And I'm going to go on a little tangent and a little bit about some negative sides before that happened. But the energy lifted, um especially when Asenio and Rashford came on.
00:20:00
Speaker
The players around them looked to interact better, they looked to play better, the pace went up in the game. um I thought Rashford had moments of brilliance, whereas, and there was a couple of other bits where you were like, it's not quite there yet. And it's understandable, it's like what they used to say with boxing, and like ring rust. When you're not doing it for a long period of time, you do need some time to get into the rhythm.
00:20:25
Speaker
To the flow of things and I felt like there was one instant in particular when rashford actually had the ball and conceded a foul. Against us when he was one-on-one with the keeper and the center back for spurs was coming across and they collided and I feel like when he's at his sharpest that becomes a goal.
00:20:44
Speaker
And I think that's why I was so pleased about this signing because I think it's literally a win-win for Villa. So it's a case of we bring the player in, if it doesn't work, we send him back. It's as simple as that. If it works, he's going to be um a superstar that can either end the season. And I actually don't even mind if he's using us as a stepping stone to get back to Man United or Barcelona or anything, as long as he performs this season.
00:21:10
Speaker
and just tries to get us in that Champions League. And at the end of the day, if he performs and enjoys that yeah opportunity of working with a quality manager like Unai Emery, I do see him possibly sticking around. And as for Asensio, I was just watching the game with massive grin on my face. His touch was perfect. His connection play with Rogers was beautiful. um It was like they'd been playing together for years.
00:21:37
Speaker
And I know I shouldn't get this excited by a 25 minute performance from a player, but I am exceptionally excited to see what he does next. And if you're Ailey, you've got to look at that and say, you know what, I'm not getting any minutes anytime soon if he stays fit. It's as simple as that for me. So, yeah, you look good.
00:21:59
Speaker
I completely agree. I thought, you know, like you said, based on that 25 minute performance, I thought, wow, he is going to be fun to watch for the rest of this season. um Just based off, you know, what I saw, he just seems like a very intelligent player, knows where what pockets to sit in, um is able to, you know, have that vision, um like you said, with connecting with Rogers and going forward. So yeah, I'm just really excited to see what he can do and would like to see more of him going forward. I know,
00:22:28
Speaker
It will be tough to to break into the 11, but I think, like you said, every player that we've brought in has just elevated um Villa and makes Unai's job a bit harder to field each 11 each week.
00:22:50
Speaker
With that being said, I did think overall the game was quite stretched out a bit at times. We saw lots of gaps between different lines. um But I felt like overall ah overall, you know, everyone put in a pretty solid shift. So with that, taking into account, you know, how excited we are about the new signings, do you have a man of the match? Is there anyone that stuck out to you particularly in this match?
00:23:19
Speaker
If you don't mind, before I get into the man of the match, the only thing I would say, apart from the conceding of the goal, um, that happened, there was one more thing that really irritated me. It's irritating me for a while, uh, the way we play. And it's a case of we were on the front foot right from the start, we scored and then we took it off again. Like as if we want to sit and reserve energy and just.
00:23:46
Speaker
possess the ball and exact the crowd out. You could only hear the Spurs fans at this point, even though we're winning, right? Exact the crowd out. it's it's It takes the sting out of it. And I just want for wants for us to, when we've got control, don't give it up.
00:24:05
Speaker
I want to keep plugging away. I want to push on. I want to get that second and third goal because they were the right for the pickings. I've never seen a midfield with so many holes in it. The Tottenham midfield was absolutely absent and the likes of Tealemans, Rodgers were just passing balls through it for fun. it It was as if there was no midfield. I actually made a note earlier on that Spurs players look like, you know, when you play the randos at the beginning of practice, um like your keep away possession.
00:24:40
Speaker
And you end up putting the worst player in the middle to play like four versus one. That's what it looked like when a terrible player is in the middle and they're chasing shadows and they're in there for like three minutes and they're exhausted. That's what the Spurs midfield looked like. They looked like they had to press because it's Posterkogli's way of pressing with high energy, but it was high Andrew with no thought process. So it was a case of they were primed for the pickings, but When they came out in the second half he'd addressed that they looked far better organized they look more like the spurs of old if you will who would be in us nine times at the last ten visits of the park so.
00:25:21
Speaker
That's what frustrate me against a decent team. They could have easily come back and won that. So, um, the fact is, I think we need to take some lessons learned from that. And when we see that opportunity to kill off a team, we need to take it more. So, um, but that, that was my run. So I'm going to get actually to your question now. So, um, the question was, who would I feel was the out of the match, right?
00:25:49
Speaker
Thanks. Yeah. So man of the match for me, I really liked Ramsey. I thought Ramsey was on fire from the beginning to the end. I felt like we've, we've commented about his finishing wasn't really there, but I felt like he had a real first for the game in today's game, which I was really pleased about. Um, the only other one I was saying, I'm not saying it's a man of the match performance.
00:26:16
Speaker
but I will say the fact that Garcia looked fantastic. I think Garcia had a good solid performance and Joe and I have talked many times and as of you neither about our weakness in that right back position and I feel that Garcia now makes me a lot more comfortable. I'm not saying he's going to take over from Matty Cash right away, but if Matty Cash is out injured, I've got no issues with Garcia there now. He looked very comfortable on the ball, looked good going forward, but also look looked in a 1v1. He was playing against a new up and coming player and tell, and I think for the most part, he kept him where he needed to be. so
00:26:58
Speaker
Yeah, for me, Ramsey played well, Garcia played well. You've got your obvious ones. withve ah Morgan Rogers had such a great game as well. Martinez was there when called upon. ah Was there anyone else that stood out for you now? um I will say, though I'm a bit biased to say this, I felt like in terms of out of possession off the ball, John McGinn covered a lot of ground for me. um So I felt like He was impactful in that sense. um Obviously, you know, Ramsey and... um Oh my goodness, the name's just left my brain now, but... um
00:27:36
Speaker
Morgan Rogers, gosh, I can't believe i that's not one to forget. forget But attacking wise, you know, getting forward, obviously, they're they've been dangerous. So um for them was really pleased with their performance as well. You make a really great point um or argument debate about Garcia.
00:27:56
Speaker
The main thing for me now is I never want to ever have to see Kanza be pulled out to an outside back position again. So I don't care who it is. Madi, Cash, Garcia, ah it doesn't matter. As long as Kanza stays centrally, I will be happy. um And I think the team will just get the most out of their players that way.

Future Outlook and Listener Engagement

00:28:20
Speaker
um But yeah, I think, you know, everyone everyone put in a solid shift. We saw a lot of people play out of position, um but I think they made the most of their minutes there. Did you expect more out of anyone today? Do you feel like there's anyone a bit underperforming? Like, what are your thoughts there? I don't think it's necessarily underperforming, but I am a little bit disappointed in tea lemons. And the reason I say that is because When I think of Yuri Tillamans and I go back to the days when he played for Leicester, I go back to recent performances for the Villa as a beginning of the season, but I expect goals from Tillamans and I expected more with the opportunities he got today. So that's me being a little harsh, I feel, but I do think that he should be hitting the target with the chances he got today and not dragging that ball wide.
00:29:12
Speaker
Um, so that's the only thing for me. Luca Dean was okay. Didn't do anything wrong, but didn't do anything glamorous either. And, uh, it's a bit harsh for me to get disappointed at cancer for getting injured, but I'm disappointed for that as well. No, that's fair enough. Um, yeah, I agree with your points. I think for me, ah maybe I'm a bit hard on him. I don't know. I just feel like.
00:29:37
Speaker
sometimes like Leon Bailey just the turnovers are a bit unnecessary for me and then instead of you know working back he's just on the ground complaining so I think that's a bit of a Maybe it's a personal thing I have, but I don't know. i just It's disappointing to see. um you know If you lose the ball, I expect people to you know work back to immediately to win it back, and I don't know. I guess that's just not his style. But we'll see better days, we hope. um We don't play Ipswich until Saturday, so we've got a full

week to prepare for that and hopefully that will give people time to recover from whatever injuries they're facing and will have time to prepare and put on a solid performance for some three points back in league action.

Craig, any last thoughts to add on this match against Tottenham Hotspur in the fourth round of the FA Cup? No, just that extremely delighted to be in the next round. I've mentioned it before on his podcast. It's been my dream since I was a kid to see Villa win the FA Cup, so long may this run continue. Amazing, and would we fingers cross for a no ah non-Premier League side in the next round? That'd be a nice, so long as we don't do slip-up like Liverpool, yeah. so yet Yeah, well, they're them and we're us, so hopefully we don't see that happen.
