Sports Podcast Network. work Hi, everyone. My name is Nyla. You're listening to Daily Villa at the Global Sports Podcast Network. Today I'm joined by Craig and Joe from our GSPN Daily Villa team. And we'll be going over the two to one victory of Aston Villa's FA Cup third round. And how are you guys doing today? ah Joe, we'll start with you.
00:00:36
Speaker
I'm all good, Nyla. Happy to ah get through to the next round, the FA Cup. And we've got a ah tough game awaiting us as we now know who

Critique of Villa's First-Half Performance

00:00:44
Speaker
we play. We've ah got Spurs in the next round. Andrew Craig, how are you? Yeah, doing very well. As you know, f FA Cup was a big one on my yeah bucket list, so I want us to progress in there. I'd love us to lift the trophy. So, as Joe said, looking forward to the next round now.
00:00:59
Speaker
Of course. So of course, this time, I think let's start with the bigger picture and we'll get down into the details and some key moments. But what were your thoughts overall on the the match? Craig? um In the first half, ah I ended the first half and I wrote on Twitter that we had lots of irrelevant possession.
00:01:21
Speaker
um It was poor defending from Mattson that led to the goal in my opinion and that we needed a lot more in the second half but thankfully we did that. um i was When I made that post I was a bit over critical because I actually think it was credit to West Ham on how they lined up against us, how they defended deep.
00:01:43
Speaker
how they looked very organised. They really nullified Morgan Rogers in the first half, where like the commentator yeah kept saying he's having a bad game. And it wasn't necessarily that. It was just the fact that Westam did such a ju ah good job of silencing him, to be honest. And we struggled to get anything. And I think we recorded no shots in the first half, which obviously was a worrying start. Joe, what did you make of it?
00:02:12
Speaker
ah First half I thought we were we were really poor. I thought we were sloppy in possession. I thought we gave the ball away really cheaply. The defence looked disorganised at times and it wasn't necessarily a half of football that I enjoyed.
00:02:25
Speaker
watching to be honest but I thought we came out after the break and looked a lot better I think. I think words were probably had at half time and I think it was eventually kind of two moments of quality that that that won us the game but yeah I think that the first half performance alone it was kind of you went in at half time and you couldn't really understand what the the plan was or whether it was just kind of the the team not really gelling it didn't look complete in any way and then as I say the second half we were able to ah get over the line but yeah two kind of very opposite ends of the the Spectrum first or second part. I completely agree

Is Villa's Slow Start a Trend?

00:02:59
Speaker
with you both. It's not the start that I was expecting, given the hype over the match. you know but The debut of the new kit, all of the the fireworks displayed at the beginning, I actually was on my way back um from training, so I passed right by Villa. and just The amount of people packed on the trains, I'm assuming obviously West Ham colours,
00:03:21
Speaker
So not all of them were Villa fans, but it was just there were so many people. Everyone was getting really hyped up about this game. So I thought Villa was gonna come out blazing and it just felt like the first 45 were asleep a little bit. But ah like Joe said, I think there was you know words at halftime where they kind of woke up. um But that kind of worries me a little bit. I know that in previous episodes, we've kind of talked about that slow start that can kind of haunt Villa. And I'm wondering your thoughts on if that's a trend that we're starting to creep back into. Is this just, you know, with with the hype of the game and and all of that, is that something that maybe distracted some of the players um from performing? What do you think about that, Craig?
00:04:13
Speaker
Yeah it's a little worrying because it's not a one-off for us. we We've spoke about it at length that we seem to have had poor starts in recent weeks and I feel like with our game plan it's like it's slow methodical game that we play. I think at times um We struggle to get a handle on the game very quickly, very early on. It's more about feeling at the opposition, seeing how they p play. But as you know, some sometimes you can't be that patient. You've got to try and go for the juggler when possible. And what I'm not seeing is the exciting villa team that we had last season compared to now. And for me, that's the most worrying side of it.
00:05:02
Speaker
Yeah, I agree completely. I think it's a, like you say, it's not a one-off necessarily. It's something that we've seen a couple of times kind of throughout the course of the season, not starting games strongly kind of. I think the the element with this game, with the the anniversary kind of celebrations beforehand, I don't know whether that kind of crept in and I was maybe a reason why we started a bit slowly, but I think You know, even in the first something like 40 seconds that West Ham cut us open, the defense looked really disorganized. It was that classic thing of kind of the majority of the defense getting drawn in on one side where the ball was. um And it's a simple switch of play and Paquetta has ah a really kind of well hit shot and we could have found ourselves one or down inside a minute. So it's something that, again, we've said on the podcast needs to be addressed because we can't keep starting games slowly and then kind of hoping that we'll
00:05:53
Speaker
We'll ah pull it back later down the line because eventually you know the looks gonna run out or that all the quality is gonna run out further down um further through games, so Starting games on the kind of strong foot is something that we definitely need to work on and be better yeah I would it would give me a bit of peace of mind as a fan if we just started out strong and and set the tone there.

Second-Half Success: Key Players Shine

00:06:14
Speaker
But with luck aside and tactics aside and play and performance aside, at the end of the day, did Villa deserve the win? What do you think, Joe?
00:06:28
Speaker
It's a really tough one to call ah because obviously there's controversy surrounding. I think it was the first goal where the ball kind of floats through, doesn't quite take a deflection off any of our players and the resulting corner we go on to score. I think the first half, looking at that, we deserve to potentially have been punished more than we were. I think that's kind of fair to say. I think we were kind of on the back foot for the majority of the half. I think that the the winning goal was really well taken. So I think a draw probably would have been a fair result. Obviously, with the FA Cup, you then see how it progresses further down the line. But I think, yeah, I think West Ham will feel hard done, by but I put it that way. Fair enough. What are your thoughts, Craig?
00:07:08
Speaker
I was just smiling at the fact that the controversy because I've seen that so much online. a It was basically shouldn't have been a corner, but it was a corner. They have plenty of time to defend against this now, but it's like it's babies with their f throwing their dummies at the pram, to be perfectly honest. but it's It's very nitpicking. I think based on our performance in the second half, we did deserve the win. I think if you would have gone on the first half alone, then absolutely not. um I think West Ham were very well organized. They nullified our attack. They did really good at silencing us. But I do agree that Emory and I've also heard it in a Morgan Rogers interview that Emory made a couple of tweaks at halftime in order to get us more on the ball.
00:07:54
Speaker
um basically trying to bust that midfield with the changes that he made bringing them in. Buendia was a big one that helped really helped when he came onto the field in my opinion. um So I do think overall we deserved the win however it wasn't a clean cut decisive performance that I was looking for.
00:08:15
Speaker
Absolutely. I think um like you nailed it right on the head there. um Second half was huge for Villa. And I think a match is going to take the full 90 minutes plus. So I would say that in the end, Villa deserves the win. You can argue about the corner. Even if that wasn't awarded to us, we didn't score from it. I think if we're playing a game of what ifs, well, you you know what if Ramsey's shot was just an inch over? like That's for sure a goal.
00:08:43
Speaker
um So I'm going to agree and and say that they they deserve the win. But Craig, you bring up a really good point about Buendia. For me, he was the Villa player that impressed me the most. um Arguably my man of the match. His energy just brought something new to the pitch. I feel like wasn't there before he got subbed on. So it's always great to see him back on the pitch and and to thrive um with that, you know, the energy and Yeah, that that we just needed. I think some of the players picked up on that and just kind of reinvigorated the team. But I would like to know what players stood out to you or impressed you the most in this match. Joe, let's start with you.
00:09:31
Speaker
um it's a really It's a tough one, I think. For me, going forward, I think Watkins had ah a relatively strong game. Obviously, he was a big part of the winning goal. um He had a couple of kind of opportunities drifting in off the the left side from what I remember and kind of causing a bit of of difficulty for West Ham there. I think his running is still very underrated. I think it's a good quality in his game that he kind of gives us, spearheading the attack.
00:09:59
Speaker
But yeah, I think it's a really tough one because there was a few performances in the second half that were but were relatively strong. I thought Onana looked relatively comfortable quite a lot. I thought Cash at right back was good until he obviously went off. I thought he was kind of working a lot of of play down the right hand side. But yeah, they were probably the ones that stood out for me.
00:10:22
Speaker
Yeah for me I feel that it was Emory's changes that really helped the game, whether they were forced upon with like Barkley having to go off or his actual tactical changes and bringing certain players on. um I for me it's Onana, I think he really um relax the midfield more, push the port forward for, give Tealemans a bit more encouragement to get forward and play those balls into those tight areas and so on. So some of his passes as we know Tealemans is fantastic and it really helps open up defences. I think in the first half he was one of those players that was nullified as well and I think that Onana switch
00:11:05
Speaker
um was able to give Tealumans a bit more time on the ball and being able to thread those passes. But going back to Buendia, I think I agree with you Nyla that Buendia really did open up that game and it's one of those things that I feel we've been lacking in recent weeks. We know when Duran comes off the bench he's a game changer and that's a real good thing to have Whereas when you look at the other ones, and this isn't an insult on the player or the position or even the team, but it's very much a like for like. We make, we bring Madison on for Luca Dean, like for like. We bring Onana on for like Kamara. It's a like for like, you know what I mean? Barkley for T-Lumans or whatever. They're like for like players. Whereas when, when deer comes on and when deer's in form, I don't think there's many players that are like him the way he plays.
00:11:56
Speaker
in the team like you can say he's similar to a Morgan Rogers himself right but I feel it's ah it's an area of the field where we can bring on he can be a game changer I think he's still trying to find that consistency and that's why we're not seeing as much minutes from him he's obviously not impressing enough in training in my opinion but maybe this will give him an opportunity to get some more minutes now and either put an advert for himself in the transfer window if he's not going to stick around or he starts pushing for a first-team position.
00:12:28
Speaker
I think for him, it's it's a bit hard because obviously coming back from a long-term injury, you want to get back in into the squad. So you're doing everything you can in training, but then you're competing with Watkins, you're competing with Duran. So i I mean, at this point with obviously Duran being out, I think it's only opportunity for him. But man, to compete against those two, that's so difficult. um So just, you know, kudos to him for for keep trying to impressive. I think obviously his his work ethic and performances aren't going unnoticed. So hopefully we'll see more of him in the future.

Improvements Needed: Player Performance Analysis

00:13:08
Speaker
Did we think there were any players that we would like to see a stronger performance from next time? Anyone that particularly seemed a bit off in this match or um just what didn't seem themselves?
00:13:24
Speaker
Go on, Jerry, you take this one.
00:13:28
Speaker
Yeah, I was I was going to mention, I don't think Yuri Tealemans had the strongest game that we've seen with him. And I think he hasn't necessarily been at his best in the last couple of weeks. Obviously, in the early stages of this season, he was one of our kind of most consistent and strongest players. And he was kind of touted as probably a standout of quite a difficult period for Villa. But yeah, I think he's gone kind of fizzled out in ah in in recent weeks. I didn't think he had his strongest, most consistent performance from midfield. Obviously he had kind of a bit of a role change with Barkley going off. Oh Nana coming in and Nana obviously was set a bit deeper so his role would have changed slightly. He would have been kind of asked to be a little bit more progressive and I don't know whether that may be affected the way that he played but I didn't think he impacted the game as we know that he can with the the quality that he has.
00:14:16
Speaker
I'd agree with that. I feel that it was in the first half he was absent, just like Morgan Rogers was. But I do think as the game progressed in the second half, we saw more of what Tealiman's is capable of. And I think that really helped us. I agree with Joe, though. It still wasn't the Yuri of old, if you will. Like, I feel he would have been disappointed by his overall performance. But it definitely helped when Sonana came on the field. um The other one for me was the fact that Leon Bailey still isn't hitting that that stride. I really thought he'd get some confidence after the goal he scored recently but now obviously with the latest developments in the transfer market he's going to have to be on his toes soon as his place could be very much in doubt in the future.
00:15:03
Speaker
I agree with the Yuri comments. I think for him, like it's really hard for us to watch him dayin day in, day out perform at the level that he has been and to expect him to carry that 100% performance, like regardless of professional status and how much they're getting paid weekly. In terms of just player burnout, it's just really hard to expect them to be 100 all the time.
00:15:29
Speaker
um But I think for him it was just small things where he just missed the mark and wasn't able to find the passes the way that he normally does. So that was a bit disappointing, but hopefully we'll see a stronger performance from him next time. And we'll get into some key moments from the match just after this short message courtesy of Zencaster.

Analyzing Villa's Defensive Errors

00:16:31
Speaker
Welcome back. We'll get into some key moments from the match now, and that means we'll have a look at the goals that were scored. So to start off, we had West Ham's opener in the ninth minute with a left-footed placement into the goal from a ball square across the box um by Paquetta. Could Villa's defensive line have done better with this? Was this a midfielder error in the build-up? What were your thoughts watching this horrible goal?
00:17:02
Speaker
Yeah, I'll start with that one. I think that the play is far too easy for Somerville to pick the ball up and he's got far too much space to work down that side. I think, you know, it's quite clear to see the quality that he has, especially kind of one on one. And then as that ball comes in, I think there's a ah lack of defensive awareness. I think the midfield should be slightly deeper. Somebody should be tracking Paquetta's run into the box. And then I think kind of consor and mings are in relatively okay kind of defensive positionings but unfortunately can't block the ball. um But yeah I can't understand how a player of Paquetta's quality was kind of able to waltz into the box and and eventually kind of opened the game for West Ham. So I think it's it's very much a midfield issue rather than like a central defence issue for me but
00:17:47
Speaker
at the end of the day somebody should have been picking him up and we've kind of made the the job harder for ourselves conceding and in kind of the first 10 minutes. For me it starts with the initial pass, Matterson is too far in towards Ming's so he's giving far too much space up on his left shoulder when the ball comes across we we were playing with a high line so it's a high but extremely narrow back four so when that ball comes in now he's having to play catch up
00:18:19
Speaker
with the the runner now, and once that that ball actually breaks into that area, the whole back four track the run of the play, and there's no midfield close enough to track that runner. So when Paquetta gets to the top of the 18, our midfield is about 18 yards from him at that point, so it's an easy shot, and for me, Olsen can't do anything other than pick that ball like the net.
00:18:46
Speaker
So it it starts with the initial shape in the press, with Mattson in my opinion, and then the back four, we didn't have to drop all four deep, one could have stepped, um so there was obviously a lack of understanding there as well. So it's the track of the midfield, it's the position of Mattson, and then it's Kanza and Ming's understanding, which is very disappointing because we've been crying for this back four for a long time, saying that they've worked together for so long, they have a good understanding of each other,
00:19:16
Speaker
But that was really poor defending, in my opinion. I completely agree. I think <unk> it's really disappointing if you were just to pause the screen um as that ball is coming across the box. We have numbers back, but they're just taking space. They're just marking the space rather than tracking the players or knowing you know where to step in.
00:19:39
Speaker
even if we kind of stagger the line a little bit so that ball doesn't come through so easily. um But I ultimately think that could have been stopped at the source. I think if we win that aerial ball in the midfield um or even prevent that pass out wide, I don't think that play develops as it does.
00:19:59
Speaker
But it only took us until late into the second half for us to equalize off of Onana's finish in the goal. It was a bit of chaos. um But what were your thoughts you know watching the build up? We saw the strike, and we saw the goalkeeper kind of fumble it, and then Onana comes sliding through. what What was running through your mind watching that? Jo, let's start with you.
00:20:22
Speaker
Yeah it was a bit of ah a scramble, it wasn't ah necessarily the most kind of beautiful goal to watch but they all count the same and I think it was a big goal for us, I think it was Onana reacting to the ball kind of the quickest as it was bobbling around just in front of the West Ham keeper.
00:20:37
Speaker
Um, and I think kind of on the balance of play in that second half, it was a goal that we deserved. Um, I thought we were kind of knocking on the door a little bit more and eventually we kind of got the rewards for it. Um, yeah. And I think it's good for him to kind of, to, to score again, obviously it's already got one against West Ham this season in the league. So it was nice for for him. I'm sure to kind of bag another one in the FA cup. Craig, what were your thinking? What were your thoughts during that goal?
00:21:06
Speaker
During that goal was, thank Allah, thank Allah, thank God and whatever you want to thank at that time because it it was coming. um It was a scrappy goal, but it showed our determination and to get on the end of it.
00:21:22
Speaker
And I think everyone and everyone knows hey what a big fan I am of Ohana. So I was happy for him. I believe that was his first goal at Villa Park, I think I heard. So he made the most of his man stare into the hole. made that goal Yeah. Camara came over, started beating him up a little bit, but it didn't shake him at all.
00:21:43
Speaker
Um, I think, you know, thinking back of, of when we first saw Nana, I think it was away at West Ham and he was particularly impressive in that match too. So I don't know. Maybe it's just a West Ham effects that he has or something like that. Um, but moving on just five minutes later, we saw a little Ollie Watkins, Morgan Rogers combination, um, for the game winning goal in the 76th minute. What particularly I liked about this goal was that.
00:22:11
Speaker
often we see Rogers feeding Ollie Watkins in or Rogers assisting Watkins and this time we saw the reverse where um Watkins played a ball and and Rogers came flying out of nowhere to finish it. um So I particularly enjoyed seeing the the other end of that, but Craig what were your thoughts on this goal? My thoughts are, and i've I've noticed this for a while now,
00:22:37
Speaker
If you go back and watch O'Nana's goal, for example, Ali Watkins is right on top of him, looking to get that goal. When the ball goes in the net, Ali does not smile at all. um We just equalised in the cup to tie this game up and there's no smile. When he gets an assist or he gets a goal, he is beaming.
00:22:57
Speaker
So he's definitely that that selfish all-round striker and this is no insult of the man at all. I'm glad that he wants to be the man that's in charge and that gives these assists and goals. I do wish he was a bit more happy as a team player, but like, yeah, him and Morgan have a very good understanding with each other. He found that it was a very good ball to get on the end of and Morgan did fantastic in order to get on the end of it. Like he made the right run, made the right call and it was extremely ecstatic when that ball hit the net.
00:23:33
Speaker
Joel, what were you thinking at this? Yeah, I was going to say, I think it's ah it was ah a more complete goal. I think it was a goal that was more reminiscent of this Villa team in terms of once again, Ollie Watkins kind of drifting in off the the left side, which I think opens up a whole other debate as to whether that's a position that we could see him playing maybe more long term with the round coming back. I think that's an interesting one.
00:23:54
Speaker
him kind of drifting off that left side um and and then sliding the ball through to to Rogers, who gets in front of his man and kind of stabs the ball home. So ultimately a really well-worked goal. And I think it it kind of showed the best qualities in both those players in terms of Watkins' creativity, which we haven't necessarily seen as much of as we we did last season. And then Rogers added another goal to to his tally as he kind of continues to be a standout performer for us.
00:24:24
Speaker
And thankfully, so we could all have a sigh of relief that Villa was then leading the match. And I alluded to this before, but we obviously saw Jacob Ramsey hit the post later on. Would your thoughts on this game change had it been a 3-1 scoreline? If that had gone in,
00:24:43
Speaker
Are we be a little bit more lenient on performance do you think in that slow start or are you kind of stuck with what you said you were sticking to your opinions on you know disappointing first half slow start? Yeah, I've never been persuaded by a score line. I have a good understanding of like when we play well and we don't at the end, um I've always, I've always come up with the opinion that good teams find a way to win whether they're not playing good or not. And no matter if that ball goes into us, this first half display just wasn't good enough. And I'm sure Emory would have agreed with that sentiment as well. If that ball would have gone in, the only difference I would have seen is the fact that I think we potentially could have got an extra one after that. And it looked more convincing on paper, even though it wasn't that convincing on the field.
00:25:34
Speaker
Yeah, I agree. I think um it's a weird one because I think the if if it had ended up at 3-1, what you wouldn't want it to do is paper over some of the cracks in terms of how poor we were for large spells in the first half. I think that's always a risk when you kind of grab goals late on in games when you're already up that it can kind of look a little bit more convincing than it maybe was so as much as I'd love to have seen Ramsey kind of that that shot hit at the back of the neck I think it would have been great for him kind of coming back into the into the squad and and getting a goal kind of relatively early on. um I think it would have been we would have been great for him but I'm also kind of not happy is the wrong word but I wouldn't want it to paper over the the cracks of what was a really kind of sloppy first half performance.
00:26:18
Speaker
Well, I guess I'll be the optimistic one. I think if we had gone up 3-1, I would have been a little bit more... um look I would have looked back a little bit more with with Fonder, maybe more gentle, maybe maybe a bit more forgiving. um But I guess one of us of the bunch has to be a little bit optimistic and Dan's not here to do that today. um But we'll look ahead after this message from the Global Sports Podcast Network.

every club. All right, so we'll just wrap up this episode briefly. We obviously know that Villa has drawn Tottenham Hotspur in the next round.

Facing Tottenham: A Tough Challenge?

00:27:20
Speaker
What is everybody thinking about this? um They recently played Tamworth, which is like
00:27:28
Speaker
divisions, divisions, divisions below. And it seemed to be a bit of a struggle. It was, it was quite a thing on local news here. Um, but Joe, like, what are you thinking that we draw Spurs? Are you a bit disappointed? It's a prem team. Did you want maybe someone lower league? What were your, what are you thinking heading into this next round?
00:27:46
Speaker
Yeah, it's probably not the ideal draw. I mean, I watched the draw as it was happening, crossing my fingers that we'd get blues the entire time. When that didn't happen, I was kind of looking, I think there were a few lower teams in there. I think Exeter were one of them that were in there that I was kind of hoping for. And then eventually, ah Mark Schwartz, I think, drew Spurs. And it was just, it was kind of you know, another London team in the Premier League that we have to try and get past if we want to, if we want any chance at silverware this season. So it's a, it wouldn't have been my ideal pick. But I think, you know, if you want to kind of, you want to get to that level, you have to play the big teams at some point. So you'd kind of rather get them out of the way and, you know, progress on further, hopefully, because as you say, they struggled against Tamworth and
00:28:33
Speaker
maybe played the ah the occasion almost rather than the actual game. So yeah, hopefully it'll be a similar case at Villa Park and we can, we can beat them. Craig drawn against Spurs. What are your thoughts on that?
00:28:48
Speaker
Yeah, I was really hoping to get small leaf. I really was. I wanted a small, pathetic team like that to push out of the cup. I got to get my digs in wherever possible. But no, yeah, I really wanted that opportunity to play against small leaf that would have been a really good occasion for us but the fact that we got Spurs I know that game when we lost in the Premier League to um ah hurt us a lot as fans and I'm sure it hurt Emory just as much so I think this is a great opportunity to rectify that that result and progress into a tournament
00:29:27
Speaker
Uh, and, and give an opportunity to win more silverware, as Joe said, you've got to beat these teams in order to get through. So, um, I don't see why we can't beat Spurs and it should be an entertaining gett to ah entertaining game with two teams that have failed to defend all season. So expect a five four classic I'm thinking. Oh dear goals galore.

in advance, but I think it's already kind of a positive that we've won this match against West Ham. um Obviously Villa has not had so much success in the recent years with the FA Cup. So I'm really hoping to see them build on this and perhaps bring home some silverware, which would be really nice.
