Hello, everybody, and welcome back to today's episode of the Daily Villa Podcast as part of the Global Sports Podcast Network. My name is Joe Boone, and I'm delighted once again to be joined by both Nyla and Dan to talk all things Villa.

Aston Villa's Recent Performances

00:00:27
Speaker
First things first, how are you guys doing? We'll start with Nyla. Doing well, thanks. Doing especially well after you know securing that three points and clean sheet. But I feel like that's You know, it's been a decent start to January so far, so excited to see where that goes. What about you, Dan? How are you?

Analysis of the Win Against Everton

00:00:48
Speaker
ah Yeah, I'm doing great guys. It was great to see a ah Villa ah back to winning ways in the Premier League after our win in the FA Cup. So yeah, it's been a good week. Good to hear. Absolutely right. Always better after Villa are victorious. And we were once again here with a well-fought and well-earned victory against Everton to really burst that David Moyes Heroes return bubble.
00:01:13
Speaker
at Goodison Park as well. So a 1-0 win, a relatively professional job I thought, but what did you guys make of the performance? We'll start with Dan.
00:01:23
Speaker
I think you've hit the nail on the head with um a professional performance. I don't think it was stand out villa. I've certainly seen us more swashbuckling than that, but a good professional performance. The defence looked well organised for me, apart from some sticky moments with playing out from the back and that moment where Luca Dean had his pocket picked, which should have led to an Everton goal if we're being honest. but I think we were good for the win with the performance we ah put out. Perfect. Nyla, what did you make of it? I thought overall it was kind of a bit boring match um to watch. I felt like Everton executed their strategy and in game plan really well and I think it took Villa a little bit to to break down. and
00:02:15
Speaker
to find our groove um to get forward and and be successful and in getting

Impact of David Moyes on Everton

00:02:20
Speaker
the goal. But I think overall, um just like you said, professional performance, and they saw out the ah clean sheet, which is good. And we know that in recent um weeks that we've struggled with conceding really late into matches. So I was really pleased to see them ah not do that this time. But I think, yeah, overall, just happy with the three points and the performance. Yeah.
00:02:46
Speaker
Yeah, I completely agree. Both of you, I don't think it's a game that we're going to look back as ah an instant classic, but it kind of carries on the the the kind of momentum from the Leicester game in the sense of it wasn't you know a sparkling performance, but we were able to to to fight and to battle and to to beat a a strong Everton side. As you mentioned there, they came in with a game plan and executed it relatively well. And I think perhaps you know if If this game happened a couple of weeks later when David Moyes could really have had a bit more time with his team, it might have have been ah a different story. On the kind of the the note of David Moyes, was there any kind of ah suppose nerves or or caution going into the game with what a new manager bounce might have brought for Everton? Do you think we could have potentially been caught out by that? We'll start with Nyla.
00:03:34
Speaker
I think any time a team or club goes through you know a manager change kind of mid-season, I think is an opportunity for other clubs to kind of take advantage of that. I mean, it's a

Jacob Ramsey's Return and Player Chemistry

00:03:46
Speaker
transitional moment for the club, for the players, um not knowing kind of if they'll maintain the style of play that they were, if they would um transfer themselves into a different, you know, playing style formation or whatever it may be. But I think for me, it wasn't enough time for me, for for it wasn't enough time that Moyes had been with
00:04:07
Speaker
The Everton team for me to worry about him really being able to um get them going, how he how we wanted to. So for me, I wasn't too concerned about that. I thought it might be a better time to really exploit Everton um in this transitional moment for them. Done. Were you fearing the new manager bouts?
00:04:30
Speaker
not Not as much as I was um against West Ham, I must admit. um i don't as as As you guys say, he hasn't had a long time with his team and it's going to take him um a good couple of games to get his playing style really embedded with the team. The only thing I suppose is that Sean Dice had made Everton fairly hard to break down and I think that was fairly evident with with the way the game panned out. So I was always concerned that they were going to certainly keep that element of the game. And they they were hard to break down. we We caught them while on the break for the goal. But you know I think that new manager bounce may come in the next couple of weeks for Everton. I don't think it was going to happen today.
00:05:17
Speaker
Yeah, I completely agree. I think they are a very kind of defensively solid team. They've got a lot of physicality, especially in those kind of centrally defensive areas. But we were able eventually to ah to break them down and take all three points. A real positive, in my opinion, from the game was the return of Jacob Ramsey back into the ah starting lineup. Dan, what did you make of of his performance?
00:05:41
Speaker
I mean, I was really excited to see Ramsey and Rogers on the same pitch together. um Jacob is another one of those players that I really love, that almost old fashioned player where he's head down driving at defenders. And Rogers can do that as well. So the opportunity for them playing off each other with one of them making the run and creating the space for the other one to fill in. We saw it a couple of times, not as much as i'd have I'd have hoped when I first saw them on the team sheet, but I think it's a really exciting prospect and so glad to see him on the pitch today. Really good performance from him. Nilo, what did you make of Jacob Ramsey?
00:06:26
Speaker
Yeah, I completely agree with Dan. I think for me, I saw it kind of coming. I think building on his performance with West Ham, I could feel, you know, things starting to cook a little bit and and for him to work himself into the game and into the squad. So I think for him, like obviously there's a few things that he can tweak um to make him more dangerous in goal scoring opportunities. But overall, I'm just really pleased with like the work rate, the work ethic that we saw today from

Ollie Watkins' Goal-Scoring Form

00:06:55
Speaker
him. And um and just excited to see where he can go from from there if we'll see more of Ramsey in the lineup or even in the starting lineup as well will be interesting. What were your thoughts, Joe, on Ramsey?
00:07:10
Speaker
Yeah, I thought he had a ah really good game. I think, you know, both on kind of both ends of the pitch, he was, you know, pretty strong going forward. As you mentioned there, we know his his ability and his quality in picking up the ball. Also defensively won the most jewels in the game with 13. He won, I think, four of his six tackles made a fair few recoveries as well i think that's and element of his game that is slightly a kind of underrated or underappreciated in terms of what he gives you a little bit more of kind of the defensive work rate. that maybe we don't necessarily get from rogers
00:07:41
Speaker
in terms of as you mentioned dan having those two guys on the same pitch in In terms of their playstyles, they're very similar. We know that they both have an ability to pick the ball up and and drive towards defenders and and cause real trouble. How do you kind of balance them with with both those players? how do How do you think we find the balance between their similar playstyles?
00:08:03
Speaker
Well, I think that's going to be really tricky without leaving out somebody that, ah you know, is potentially quite a high profile player for us. and Obviously, we didn't see Bailey tonight. McGinn, I can't remember if he's injured or suspended, but I think it's injured. with it Is it hamstring? Yeah, I believe so. So obviously he wasn't there. So that's two.
00:08:28
Speaker
um Real high profile players that obviously missed out and Ramsey is capitalized on that and I think it's really tricky, especially now um after the transfer with our chat from ah joining from Bruzzio Dortmund. Is it Marlon? Yeah, I think so.
00:08:48
Speaker
yeah And, you know, I think it's going to be really tricky to see them playing often together. um And I think if we're going to play them together, it's got to be against the team that we're really hoping for a cut and thrust villa. i'm I think if you're playing them both with a defensive game in mind, we um could well struggle. So I think it's a game that we've got to be fairly confident we're going to go and get a result from to be to have both of them on the pitch.
00:09:19
Speaker
Yeah, I agree. Nyla, in terms of, as as Dan mentioned there with the incoming of Daniel Marlin, with Bailey and with those two as well, how do you think we find the balance between those kind of those players all very different in terms of their style but will be kind of competing for those similar positions?
00:09:37
Speaker
I wouldn't be surprised if it came down to chemistry and whoever were playing the opponent. I think um obviously the game strategy that Emory will come up with and how Villa plays, he has to keep in mind, you know,
00:09:52
Speaker
who he's working with. So I think depending on you know who clicks on, who gets on together, who combines well together could very much determine the lineups going forward, just depending on you know what the main focus of of how he wants Villa to play.
00:10:08
Speaker
a specific match. So I think obviously having more options is always better. Things are going to come up, injuries are going to come up, um illness, etc.

Villa's Champions League Ambitions

00:10:18
Speaker
But I think that only, you know, strengthens Villa to have, you know, quality in your lineup, but also on your bench and having that versatility to spot players out but still get the job done. So it's exciting times, isn't it?
00:10:32
Speaker
It certainly is. I think, you know, with Marlon coming in, Ramsey, Rogers, Bailey, Buendia obviously kind of came on and made a cameo appearance at the end of of today. It's very exciting that we've got kind of different players who we can do the same job in different ways. And I think Emery's very big on that, as we've seen all across the and the pitch and the squad in terms of the depth that we have. We're going to be back to discuss the result further after a very short message, courtesy of Zencaster.

Welcome back and the goal eventually came via Ollie Watkins in the 51st minute. Once again, it was that link up play between Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers that we've seen kind of in the past couple of weeks. How good is it to see those two on the same wavelength ah so often, of a kind of of late? We'll start with Nyla.
00:12:01
Speaker
I love to see it. I mentioned this in an earlier episode this week. Just those two combining is so lethal at times, um but just the quality of of that goal and that buildup, like that through ball is perfect. um But i yeah, I love to see, you know, that chemistry, I love to see them perform well. It's really interesting to see, you know, I mentioned I think before how it was Ollie Watkins assisting Rogers and now that's that's flipped the other way around so we have Rogers assisting Ollie Watkins which was the initial trend it seemed to be but just to see you know both being able to get on the end of each other's passes to score goals is fantastic and I can't wait to see you know that develop further I'd like to see even more goals come from combinations between the two of them. Yeah it's great to see those combinations. Dan what did you make of of their link up play?
00:12:54
Speaker
I thought leading to the goal was fantastic. I mean, that pass was like hot honey on a pepperoni pizza, wasn't it? It was gorgeous, absolutely stunning. Ollie not even having to break his stride and and well taken through Pitford's legs.
00:13:12
Speaker
you know it's I think that they are really going to be crucial if Villa are going to push on higher up the table, certainly towards Champions League ah places. So I'm hoping we're going to see a lot more of that in the future. Yeah, I think that's exactly right. I think the link up player that they they kind of do have, we've seen in in previous games, the way that Rod just tries to kind of feed the ball through on on the break and on the counter with through balls. And it hasn't always come up exactly as he would have intended but yeah it was it was perfect and it was great to see Watkins back on the score sheet. In terms of looking at kind of Ollie Watkins individually how important do you think it is for him to add to his goal telling what's been a little bit of a kind of turbulent season for him ah so far down?
00:13:58
Speaker
Well, Ollie hasn't been the same player that we saw last season. I mean, that there's nothing to say that he's going to not go on a run and bag a few more and and make us all remember that player that we saw last year. But it hasn't seemed to be happening for him so far and whether or not that's a little bit of a pressure being put on by the likes of Jerome being so close behind him.
00:14:24
Speaker
um But I think that goal today, it was so well taken that it's going to have done absolute wonders for him. we saw and Craig pointed out that um the not smiling when we equalised against West Ham, and I thought that was a really interesting point, he certainly was all smiles when he'd taken that goal, putting the badge and really saying, i I'm Villa's man, I am i am the top boy.
00:14:52
Speaker
Nilo, what did you make of the the Watkins goal? Yeah, i I really enjoyed it. I think an interesting thing for me, sorry, was in the post-match interview, he said, of course, I so you know obviously i scored my goal. So I think him using those words, my goal just says,
00:15:12
Speaker
enough for me. I think obviously as a striker, you you're there to score goals. You want to score for your team. But you know for him to reference, you know my of course I've scored my goal. I think obviously each match, there's a bit of pressure on him. He wants to score. um And you know when you're not able to get that done, that's going to increase the pressure. You might feel like I'm in a bit of a drought or you know I guess like a curse or some sort or something like that. So I think for him to, you know, score the goal, start fresh now, now that he's kind of ended that, you know, non-scoring length of time is massive for him. And I think, yeah, I just I can't get over the my goal of obviously scored my goal. I think that is testament to, you know, how he takes his job now serious. He um wants to contribute to the success of Villa.
00:16:05
Speaker
Yeah, absolutely. And I think it's so good for him kind of from a confidence point of view. We know obviously very similar to a few of the players in this squad. He is a confidence player that performs best when he's had ah a run of of really good performances. And hopefully this is the kind of the jumpstart for that. Dan, you mentioned kind of we haven't seen necessarily the same Ollie Watkins this season. It's been a bit turbulent. He's had criticism and and some doubters at times. Do you think he's kind of a victim of his own kind of form from last season? Do you think he's kind of being on and maybe unfairly compared to the the quality that EE showed for us last year.
00:16:39
Speaker
um I actually think not just ah the performance he showed for Villa last year, but that goal that he scored in the Euros has come back to bite him slightly. I mean, what a fantastic goal. I never jumped so high when I saw that going. I'm so pleased for him, but you really expected him to kick on from there and really, really challenged for that England's number nine ah more often.
00:17:07
Speaker
and it's it's It really is an interesting proposition. I don't quite know why we haven't seen it this year. I'm just hoping that he's going to be able to kick on from this. and i In all honesty, I i think i he will. i'm ah I'm a great believer in Ollie Watkins. I think he's a fantastic player and he's come from such humble origins that I would i really like to see him have a very successful season and become Villa's own time top goalscorer because I don't think he's too far away. I certainly don't think he's that far behind Gabby-Anne Bonnault. So, you know, maybe we'll see it this season.
00:17:46
Speaker
Yeah, no, I don't think he's very far behind at all and I think he has the opportunity to kind of hunt down that that that aim and and cement himself in in Villa history. Do you think that's something, Nyla, that he'll be particularly focused on or do you think that's in the background and kind of if he gets it, it's great, but it's not something he's it' in the kind of forefront of his mind?
00:18:07
Speaker
I think it's on his radar, but I would imagine him taking it match by match. You do the take care of the small things, um you do what you need to do each match, and eventually you know the accolades will come, the achievements will come. um But I do think it is something on his mind. I mean, how could you not want to set such a big goal for yourself? um so Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if he's aware and that is a long-term goal he's working towards.
00:18:33
Speaker
Yeah, I agree. I think it's something that will kind of be set in his sights. You know, being the the lead Premier League goal scorer, a massive football club is obviously something most strikers dream of. So I think it's something he'll be kind of slowly and quietly kind of working towards.

It was probably more of an even game than we maybe would have expected prior to to Moy's appointment when kind of Sean Dyche was in and they were struggling a little bit. They weren't having huge amounts of of kind of possession of the ball. They didn't play particularly expansive football. But with Moy's coming in, there was kind of a little bit more possession on their end and they were the kind of, you could see the kind of difference in in play style. But what do you think was the defining factor in us picking up all three points at Goodison Park? We'll start with Nyla.
00:19:55
Speaker
um I'd maybe say two points. One, we took advantage of a really, really good opportunity to go score a goal. Had that not gone in, and I think the whole dynamic of the game could have shifted.
00:20:10
Speaker
And something maybe we don't often say too much on this podcast, but I thought defensively, um we had a bit more purpose. We defended well with purpose. It got a bit shaky towards the end, but I think in terms of the interceptions and the blocks, we were more spot on today. Obviously we had Kamara clear that one off the line, but I think just, you know, Kansa had a few ones where they did go out for corners, but we did stop the cross.
00:20:40
Speaker
from, you know, turning into something more dangerous. So those are the two things I would name it down to. Dan, what were the the highlighting factors for you? I'd have to agree with our defensive performance. we We did play with a lot more purpose and I thought Kamara had um a really good game today. Filling in um any gaps that were left um in defence and clearing that ball off the line as well and is a fairly obvious point.
00:21:09
Speaker
um I was really pleased with our game management as well. We've spoken quite a lot about not being able to see games out and this is the first um time for quite a while that I was fairly confident we were going to see it out even though it was a little bit sticky towards the end.
00:21:31
Speaker
Yeah, I completely agree. I think that the way we kind of managed the performance was was really important. And once again, it's a clean sheet on the road, which has have been pretty kind of hard to come by for Vela. Looking at the centre half, especially with with Mings and Kanza, with Taras and Carlos' kind of ah injuries, we're not sure what the extent of those are. Looking at that centre half pairing of of Mings and Kanza, do you think that is the the kind of pairing that we're looking to go forward with, given the the defensive solidity that we've seen today and I believe they started the Brentford game as well and look particularly solid. Do you think they're kind of really ah pitching their post for the starting centre back positions? We'll start with Dan.
00:22:10
Speaker
Well, I don't think Konza has ever been out of that picture, to be perfectly honest. But I think the main um question is whether or not it's Powell or Mings. And obviously Powell is injured and we think it's a fairly hefty, is it a metatarsal that he's out with? um Yeah.
00:22:30
Speaker
so So he's going to be gone for a little while. And I think it's so important for Mings to have a bit of a run in the team, especially after he's come back from his own long-term injury. That doesn't just ah come back overnight. um But i I think there's a good leader in Mings, and I think he's a good physical defender where Powell's a bit more technical. The only criticism I'd have over Mings, and it felt like it's certainly in the West Ham game,
00:22:59
Speaker
is he does seem to slow the game down where it doesn't need to be. There it needs to be a bit more of attacking thrust and Torres seems to have that in him, but I'm a big fan of Ming's so I certainly am i' not worried seeing him at the backped with Conzo. Nilo, what did you think of the at the centre half performance?
00:23:22
Speaker
Yeah, um I like the pairing. I think they do well. I think obviously agreeing with Dan Kansa in his own right should always be there. It's just a matter of who's going to play alongside him. But I do think Ming's has such a strong presence. um He's phenomenal for us in the air. I'd say more so than Pau, but I would like to see them, you know,
00:23:46
Speaker
build up that chemistry, um work more together and just see what they can do and and see how they can play off each other. But it's not a pairing that I'm opposed to. um I think sometimes PALS struggles like the turnovers and things like that. So I think it will be a new pairing that I'd like to see flourish and and see what they can do.
00:24:08
Speaker
Yeah, I completely agree. I think it's a really interesting point in terms of Ming's give us that aerial presence that Paul Torres maybe be doesn't in terms of that, that physical kind of aerial ability. I suppose to wrap the episode up, we're now sitting seventh in the lead on 35 points, just three points off Newcastle in fourth place. How important do you think a good run of form is if we're really going to make a a strong kind of Champions League push? We'll start with Dan.
00:24:39
Speaker
Well, you you guys know me to be the optimistic one. So I don't think it's incredibly important that we put a run together because we're going to qualify from the Champions League by winning the thing. So, you know, clearly that's how. No, obviously it is incredibly important that we try and put a bit of a run together. We've got um West Ham again um fairly soon.
00:25:01
Speaker
um and we really need to push on. It's not going to be an easy game going to Arsenal, but if we can get a draw out of that or even a positive result, not putting that past us on our day, we can certainly turn them over. But I think if we're really going to start challenging for these top four places, we're going to have to really put our foot on the gas fairly soon. And I don't think we can rely on fifth place being a Champions League position this year just yet either. But, you know, I may be proved wrong and and top five will be good enough. But, yeah, I think we certainly need to start pushing pushing ahead fairly quickly. Yeah, it's always a risk relying on that, that fifth place. Nilo, what are your thoughts kind of looking at that Champions League run?
00:25:53
Speaker
I think it'd be ideal to start getting the results. um Aside from the arsenal fixture, although we know how good Villa can be, and I think at this point, you know, any game is winnable. We do have a lot of winnable matches coming up um in terms of, you know, our opponents. So I think for them to game by game, show up, take care of the small things that need to be done so that bigger picture wise, we can get the three points, I think would be massive.
00:26:23
Speaker
It's just an opportunity, I think, obviously towards the end of last year, this season, there was a few matches where we dropped points. And so, you know, in order for us to not put us more behind on the trigger trajectory that we want to be on, I think now is the opportunity to gain back some of the points that we that we lost.
00:26:45
Speaker
Yeah, I completely agree. It's going to be a yeah ah real kind of run-in for us as we we hunt for European football once again. That's all for this episode of the Daily Villa podcast. Thank you to Nyla and Dan for joining me. Be sure to get in touch across all the socials that you can find in the podcast description. This has been a global sports podcast production.
