Introduction and Thanksgiving Reflections
00:00:04
Speaker
Welcome to the Chopping Block, the guillotine league podcast made for you. Boys, I'm sorry. We are late, but better late than never. We're back with ah we're going to have a double podcast week Tuesday and Wednesday. So I think it's something to be thankful for coming off Thanksgiving. I'm here with Spencer, of course, as usual. What's up? I'm back. Come here. yep We get two pods this week.
00:00:32
Speaker
It was Thanksgiving week. So I think it's okay that we missed, you know, holidays. I don't know what happened, but I get it. Got to count your blessings. That's right. We're here. Um, and, uh, a blessing is with us. We got D bigs. What's up, dude? What is up everybody? How are we doing?
00:00:51
Speaker
D Biggs, I gotta expose you, okay? You may not be prepared for this. A couple weeks ago, on one of the podcasts, I said, I don't think D Biggs listened to these. D Biggs, if you're listening, drop a specific emoji in the chat. No specific emoji was dropped.
00:01:09
Speaker
therefore confirming. And, uh, this week, uh, you actually came to learn that Spencer was on the podcast. You didn't even know that was a, was a thing. So i you're a fresh perspective. so welcome Very fresh. so Very fresh.
Fatherhood and League Connections
00:01:26
Speaker
I'm curious. I don't know ever. I only know a number of guys in this league. I Garrett is my connection. I've met some of them over tap water, uh, redraft and dynasty, but I'm curious how many of them have a kid. And I would love to know the ones that have a kid. If they listen to anything that they want to listen to each week, think it's maybe garywood Garrett and Garrett's a loyal listener.
00:01:47
Speaker
Oh, yeah. That I mean, hey, I aspire to be Garrett. So if he's the one listening every week, then I'll then I'll learn. But, you know, I think those are you guys are the only dads in the league. Yeah. Out of 18 people, a dog dad. You know, poop everywhere. Not a whole lot different. Yeah. Probably get, you know, I think your dog's nicer to you than than my child might be at times.
00:02:16
Speaker
Oh, I guarantee it. Yeah. All right.
Fantasy Challenges: Roster and Performance
00:02:22
Speaker
D bigs. Tell us what went wrong. Why are you talking to us? Because I lost. Why'd that happen?
00:02:33
Speaker
Um, you know, I could sit here, make excuses and say it was the, the week 12 buys and blues. And that was ultimately the the biggest challenging at some, at some big guys out. I'm looking at my empty roster. Like I'm going to look back on something. And I was hyped because in.
00:02:52
Speaker
I don't know how how many years have I done tap water with you guys? Three, four? Yeah, it's probably been like four. and i don't remember yeah I think that was the first league I had done at least that I can remember or like gave a crap about that did three wide receivers. And every year I botched it and I did not get a solid three enough receivers. And so I go into this draft like 18 teams, three receiver slots.
00:03:19
Speaker
I gotta, you gotta prioritize that receiver spot so, so heavily. And I thought I did great. Love me some Drake, London, CD lamb getting there. And then drafting Jalen fricking waddle. A part of it was having Jalen waddle on my team and in my roster, in my starting lineup every week, debating if I want to drop him for someone else every week in just.
00:03:46
Speaker
holding on for hope. And then of course, the one we got on stardom. The man goes off. Eventually get Nick Chubb, because I need some running backs. Hasn't done anything. Hasn't even scratched double digit fantasy points. Yeah, I like the matchup and whatnot, but i've there's got to be a better option here. And not having either of those guys in the lineup was ultimately what went wrong. So poor roster management. And here I am on the podcast. Sorry, as can be.
00:04:18
Speaker
Yeah, it is kind of poetic. ah you didn't You didn't trust Waddle. You should have trusted him. I played him week after week not trusting him and just knowing it was a waste of a play. And then
Team Struggles and Player Inconsistencies
00:04:32
Speaker
I just thought I had better options. I was so over him and I didn't trust him.
00:04:37
Speaker
Hmm. Notably, Eckler did like die. Die. The wig 12. Uh, so did Josh Downs. He fucked his shoulder up. yeah Um, and Quentin Johnson decided not to catch a ball. He was the one I was so worried about. He's who haunts me. Like could have, I mean, he had a, he had a waddle day and it would have made more sense to just, you know, she said, trust waddle.
00:05:06
Speaker
think I think Waddle is the the key player here. he's He's been a fantasy killer for so many people this year. like He's drafted so high. There's so many analysts like really in his corner. I think there's other people that were not in his corner. but I don't know where you stood, but I was a big Waddle fan going into the air. I thought it was going to be a great year. He's so bad and he he's killed me in a bunch of leagues. so I feel your pain. i would have I would have done the same thing. Keep benching him, or I would have benched him this week too. I was over it, especially in Guillotine when your your league, your team starts to get so deep or not to bench the name. The thing for Waddle, especially I'm looking at is this is his fourth season. Every season you look back, especially rookie year and last year, targets galore.
00:05:54
Speaker
He gets thrown the ball all the time. This year, died. He's only had two weeks where he's had seven or more targets, not only receptions, just targets. one In week five, he had eight targets. Week 12, he had nine, and eight of those were receptions for 144 yards and a touchdown. And I bet on him on on the year that he doesn't get thrown the ball a lot.
00:06:21
Speaker
yeah Tyreke's being bad too. I don't know what's going on with that offense. I mean, Tyreke hasn't been as bad, but he's not he's not the Tyreke of previous years as well. i Maybe to his head is is more messed up than ah they want to let on.
00:06:36
Speaker
Yeah. The funny thing is Diggs, the two weeks you mentioned of more than seven targets or against the same team. Yeah. So you could have had some foresight there, you know, potentially, Oh, you know, that Hey, he went off it against New England. Maybe he'll do it again. He did. Who, who do they got? They have Christian Gonzalez and who's our second corner back.
00:06:58
Speaker
You know, I don't know. I don't have memorized corner plays on which side I see a lot of that more than I'm used to of like, they stick to that side. So maybe Gonzalez is on him instead of Tyreek. I don't know. Or I'm sure wasn't if that's the target case, but Spencer, you were saying just their offense into his head. I also wonder like they've been running the ball fine for the most part. And so I think that's just Mike McDaniel being more of a run guy than a passing guy. And I don't know if he knows how to handle.
00:07:24
Speaker
ah Two good receivers I can do a lot. Yeah, I don't know. You're right. A-chan's been having a ah stellar year alongside just any running back that's been in Miami. So yeah, I don't know what it is. It's it's it's been bizarre. Yeah. So Dan,
Guillotine League Strategy and Challenges
00:07:42
Speaker
with your first year in Guillotine, ah thoughts going in versus thoughts coming out?
00:07:48
Speaker
um thoughts going in i mean i'm i'm surprised i'm surprised i made it as far as i did in one sense by never having played guillotine but i've played fancy football for for years and It's the same gist is obviously a slightly different strategy. The thing I was as definitely most concerned with was, uh, fab and how, how that works on a week to week basis. And so I remember texting Garrett, like, Hey, can you give me any context to like week one?
00:08:22
Speaker
Chris McCaffrey, his team loses. How much is he going for? And, you know, give me a guy like, uh, Brian Robinson, his team loses like starting running back. Not quite Chris McCaffrey at all. Well.
00:08:37
Speaker
Tough example, I guess, this year. I'd rather have one and the other. Let's just say, ah I guess, Derek Henry and Brian Robinson. Like how much is he going for? At least at the start of the year. And then how much fab do I want to have going into?
00:08:53
Speaker
halfway at the end, like, and I don't know if I still have a clear answer and you know, every year is different. Maybe you have to spend more fab earlier in the season. Cause injuries or whatever, or you made a crappy, you had a crappy draft and you're trying to fix that or vice versa. Like I was just looking the other day, um, who the heck has someone still had so much fab and it's still in. I'm trying to look for who got the most probably Mitch.
00:09:22
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, I guess a lot of these early exits, but there's guys that are, we're out early that have a thousand fab, not a dollar spent. Yep. Um, feels bad. It feels real bad. I would say who,
00:09:40
Speaker
Mitch, yeah, Mitch is the most right now at 39. So I looked at, I remember two weeks ago, I think he had, he or someone else had like 300 left. Yeah. And it was well over halfway. How are you still in and have that much money? But what Mitch or whoever's been able to do is they get their choice every week. I mean, you got to bid correctly, but like they get who they want. And that is, that is power late in the week. Like his lineup is disgustingly filthy. know ah It's Josh Allen, Devonary Jane, Chase Brown, A.J. Brown, Pooka Nooka, Garrett Wilson, Alvin Kamara. That's nutty. And
Team Evaluations and Predictions
00:10:17
Speaker
so that's just weeks of of acquiring those guys.
00:10:20
Speaker
yeah yeah it's pretty dirt nasty uh... but that's that that's a thousand dollar risk at the beginning is uh... you know you can't you wanna save it for later but you end up going out too early now here's here's a bright side as a newcomer uh... top half's pretty honorable pretty respectable like um... seventh place you were one spot away from hitting pay dirt unfortunately but uh... pretty good you gotta feel good about that i do i would say i don't know if either of you to watch the show survivor sure somebody else you're talking to trolls uh he's a big survivor guy if not the biggest oh we grew uh i had never watched it before meeting my wife and her family is all about it they've watched every season it's like one of the only things they all watch together and
00:11:17
Speaker
This this is like the most on survivor I've ever felt like being here I am and travel counsel answering questions from the great ah Jill Proops himself and It's like yeah, you know, i I feel for anyone who went out with a thousand dollars you You probably feel like you went out with an immunity idol, right? Like you have a thousand dollars fab and you need to spend any of it you get to use it um whether it's like Was it just this last season that like four or five people in a row went out with the media? I was like, I would feel like that. But right now it's like, yeah, I, uh, I did, I did the best that I, I could, and then made some, some match-up mistakes. I was m impressed with myself, how many correct decisions I made in terms of who's going to start, who's not.
00:12:06
Speaker
And, you know, when I finally got it wrong, big time, that is when it bit me in a week 12 with the buys and injuries that I had on this team. That was when I needed to get it right. And quite the opposite took place. Hmm. Like survivor, you you played hard, you lasted a while, but, uh, what did you end was trusting the wrong person? Dammit, young model.
00:12:30
Speaker
All right. We're going to get to, uh, the place that we always end up on these podcasts, but for, for you, we're going to get there for the first time. So D bigs almost made that joke for you. If you didn't, I'm going to have you, uh, tell me, who do you think's going to be talking to us next week? Uh, um, sorry, buddy. My first thought is Garrett o because it's hard to say after he was the leading scorer.
00:13:01
Speaker
But still some bye weeks. I would have to see who's he got on by next week. Um, but I just know the week before I went out, the week I went out in this last week, a little bit, he and I were texting and he was nervous. I think everyone's nervous this late in the game, right? Like anything could happen.
00:13:19
Speaker
And maybe part of that is he's just the only one that I've really been talking to throughout the season. I'm like, man, I'm worried that this could be my week. um He has Taysom Hill and not like Taysom Hill as a huge asset, but that's someone on his team who's out. um Bucky's questionable, but says he should play. So he's, I mean, he's got some solid guys, but I, in my other leagues, I have Cooper Cup. I have so much stock in Cooper Cup.
00:13:47
Speaker
And he should have bed last week. And so Garrett's face with that is he playing Cooper cup, Jayden Reed, super hit or miss, uh, tomorrow chase and the poor fricking bangles. Tomorrow chase is doing great every week other than like a handful of here or there. Um, but you know, they played Dallas and Dallas has just been a super weird team. Um, Brian Robinson should get a lot of volume. And so if he plays, let's just say he, I mean, he's going to add dang Lamar and Patrick.
00:14:17
Speaker
I'm playing and ah Patrick against the charges next week. Oh, Lamar's on by. So he has to play Patrick. Yeah, I think he's got a pretty solid team, but everybody's got a solid team here. Like, I don't think Mitch is losing next week. I look at his team. Maybe, uh,
00:14:36
Speaker
Joel's probably going soon. who Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Who's chummy bug? That's joe Joel. that's right yeah That's who you're talking about.
00:14:47
Speaker
If I say Joel, man, that's just it's good odds. There's two of them. But I see, I see the dirty Joel is another guy. Yeah. I don't know who that is. That's, this is that's that, this Joel, dirty boy, bad boy, Joel. Dirty boy, bad boy, Joel. D bigs. Please tell us, who do you think is going to win it all? Can I change my answer of who's going to lose after I got to look through a little more? Yeah. Austin's out. Oh.
Potential Exits and Predictions for Winners
00:15:18
Speaker
Boston's out. I'm surprised. Just looking at a starting lineup from last week. I don't really know how he made it this week. Just down weeks, DeAndre Swift, the JSN, it had three guys not get 10 points and no one got over 20. So maybe just those consistent teens, but I think that was a warning. And I can see some of these guys busting next week and not doing that, not doing their job. You heard it. Debates is a couple of guys are going to bust this week.
00:15:45
Speaker
You know why he's going to get out is because he, uh, Nick Chubb is going to go off next week. No, I mean, it's Pittsburgh. It's supposed to be funny, but now it's not realistic. I was going to say Nick is going to go off and he's going to have him on his bench and that's why he's going to lose.
00:16:02
Speaker
that's That's why I went out. Oh, I mean, I like it. I like the shot. I like the shot. Who's going to win. Who's going to win.
00:16:16
Speaker
I really think it's Mitch. I haven't, I haven't found a team that I think it's going to be anyone else. and Okay. He's got guys that have been consistent. A Chan, Brown, Josh freaking Allen, um, Alvin Kamara, even with other potential guys on one of the worst teams we've ever seen the New York jets of breeze. Hall, Garrett Wilson. They can still be viable. George Kittle had a disgusting week, but he's been so consistent. And then there's.
00:16:45
Speaker
We haven't even touched AJ Brown or Pukinakua. Yeah. Okay. Mitch, I got a question for you. You said the Josh Allen. Uh, do you know the quarterback back up, um, Mike Glennon? Do I? Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Question for you. More like Josh Allen or Mike Glennon is who more like them. Me. Are you more like like physically look,
00:17:14
Speaker
Come on. Josh Allen for sure. You just got engaged to What's Her Butt. Let's go. No, he looks like Mike Glennon. Come on. Let's be real. Spencer, come on. Come on. He looks like Mike Glennon. What are you talking about? He doesn't have hair. Josh Allen's got hair.
00:17:34
Speaker
Hey, I put a hat on. Nobody knows. I'm trying to think of another bald quarterback. I can't. Gary said Brian Hoyer. Oh yeah. Brian Hoyer for sure. All right. There you go. That's a good middle point. All right. I just wanted to clear the air with that. I'm going to put to respect on Mike Lennon's name if we're laughing at him. He was a good quarterback.
00:17:59
Speaker
It's a great backup quarterback. Yeah, there it is. that's what That's right. That's right. Frank-like reincarnate. All right. de
Reflecting on League Experience and Super Bowl Picks
00:18:08
Speaker
bigs Is there anything left unsaid that you feel the need to say? Yeah, I went through Mitch's team and I didn't even get to Bijon Robinson. And so there it is. Okay. um Anything else I want to say? Thanks for letting me be part of Guillotine.
00:18:25
Speaker
I enjoyed it. It's, it's great. I'm a ah just, if I went out week one, I think I would have never talked to any of you ever again out of embarrassment and sadness of being like, great, that was nice. Nice sip of coffee and I'm done, but it's been a great, great time. And, uh, you know, now I'm, I'm so curious who's going to win this thing and and what the last couple of weeks look like for these teams. If it's like.
00:18:54
Speaker
They scoring 300 points. Some of these rosters could potentially do that. Well, tune in every week. You know, where we'll be. Your last duty as our guest is to pick an emoji to let the folks or all to the, for the folks to let you know that they made it to the end of the podcast.
00:19:25
Speaker
um I my Super Bowl pick is the Detroit Lions And so we'll go with like the the lion head Emoji, it's got like a mane, you know, it looks just looks like a little cat with a mane on it consider Okay, the Lions D bigs, thank you Thank you all
