Villa's Victory and End of Winless Streak

00:00:02
Speaker
Every club. Every day. The Global Sports Podcast Network. Hey villains, welcome back to Daily Villa. This is Nyla, and it's just me today. This will be a short and sweet episode. We will touch on Aston Villa's massive 3-1 victory over Brentford at Villa Park. It was certainly a fun one to watch under the lights and the future's looking bright for Villa, if I do say so myself.
00:00:32
Speaker
That also could have been the reflection off of Morgan Rogers' hair, I'm not sure. And I'm glad to say that it's the end of an eight match winless run, and it was certainly the way to do it.

Key Goals and Scorers

00:00:46
Speaker
In this matchup against Brentford, we saw goals for Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, and Maddie Cash to seal that win. And we'll dive into the action, some key moments, and what that means going forward in today's episode.
00:01:00
Speaker
So let's not waste any time, let's get straight into it. Wow, what a first half. Villa came out guns blazing. I felt like they were hot from that first whistle and you could really tell there was this energy, this hunger on the villa side where they were on a mission to make this match a turning point for the league and to set things right and get back on track. And I just, I really felt that, but I also really saw it in terms of demeanor and and body language as well.
00:01:33
Speaker
there was about a 13 minute goal frenzy in the first half for Villa and it was opened up by yours truly Morgan Rogers he does what Morgan Rogers does he picks up the ball about halfway the halfway mark and just drives forward just breaking lines causing chaos for the Brentford defenders I thought, you know, he threw in a little cheeky one-two with Ollie Watkins before curling the ball in the top right corner to put Villa up one nil. And man, there's not a lot of things for a goalkeeper at that are more depressing than just watching a ball curl around you into your goal. So Morgan Rogers, what a treat for us Villa fans that was.
00:02:21
Speaker
It only took seven minutes before Ollie Watkins got himself on the on the score sheet after winning a penalty. It was a really weird kind of fumble in the box between him and the Brentford defender and after a VAR check, and we know how I feel about VAR, not really a fan if I've not made myself clear um in previous episodes, but it did go our way.
00:02:47
Speaker
It did solidify that penalty call and Watkins was able to step up but and smash that ball in the bottom right corner.
00:02:58
Speaker
The keeper did get a touch, but it just wasn't enough. And that really cushioned the Villa lead, which was great to see. Ah, but Villa wasn't done cooking just yet. In the 34th minute, Maddie Cash pounced on a loose clearance and credit to him, it was a really

First Half Dominance and Brentford's Struggle

00:03:17
Speaker
tight angle. He was able to volley the ball in to put Villa up three nil. Now we have to talk about his choice and celebration because I thought it was a quite bold choice and I'm talking about the camera kiss. Now to witness that from the perspective of the camera was a little bit jarring but I think the photo they got of him doing it was quite cool actually so maybe I've changed my mind on this.
00:03:47
Speaker
But for me, I think the boldness of that was that it seemed that there was some slight confusion or hesitation whether there was an offside in the buildup of that play. VAR cleared it, so it was all fine. But it's just like, if that was ruled offside, how do you... How do you come back from having done that celebration? I don't know. like Hopefully, we'll never know. And I really want to know whether that was a spur of the moment thing or he just decided that's what his goal celebration was going to be the next time he scored.
00:04:24
Speaker
Needless to say, the first half was near perfection for Villa. I just thought it was overall solid performance. We looked organized at the back. We looked dangerous going forward, just in complete control, dominating the match. And that's not to say that Brentford didn't have their moments because they did, but it just was nothing that Villa couldn't handle.

Brentford's Consolation and Villa's Resilience

00:04:51
Speaker

So as one would expect, Brentford came out in the second half with a bit of bite to them. I would imagine there were some words exchanged at halftime and you know this is the the response that you would expect from a team playing in a league where every point matters and every match really anyone can can win at any given time and we've seen that with some of the results this season.
00:06:17
Speaker
um So credit to Brentford, they did get on the score sheet themselves in the 54th minute. Now it was really disappointing to see Villa concede, but also to give credit where it's due and to be fair, it was a well-taking goal.
00:06:35
Speaker
Now, if we want to nitpick here, I just felt like it was, it stemmed from a poor defensive clearance from us. And then we were just outnumbered in the box. So as soon as that ball had gone to the far post, I mean, I went, uh-oh, because I'm seeing a 2v1 there. And.
00:06:53
Speaker
yeah it it turned out as I expected we conceded the goal. Now the important thing is we did get the three points which is fantastic but when you look at the table and you look how tight everything is you just know that goal differential is going to play a part at some point in the season So I think if we can clean it up a little bit, and I know I've harped on clean clean sheets in previous episodes, and I think now we just need to focus on getting the three points, getting the win. But, you you know, once you get that lead, it then just becomes about defending that clean sheet. You're playing for that clean sheet now. And we

Standout Performances and Tactical Insights

00:07:34
Speaker
just couldn't get it done, but like I said, there was lots of positives to take from this match.
00:07:39
Speaker
And despite that, despite conceding in the 54th minute, Villa didn't fold, Villa didn't crumble. I thought they managed the game very well. I thought Emery's choices and subs and the timing of the subs were also very effective. um Subs came on. It took a few of them, I think, a bit to to work into it. I think Ross Barkley had to work into it a little bit. I think Jayden Philogene played a little bit more conservative than normal, but overall just really pleased with the performance collectively and individually.
00:08:19
Speaker
Now, individually, there was a few standout performers for me and arguably, and I think any one of these could be the men of the match, but for me, I think the biggest star was Tyrone Minks. He was absolutely phenomenal for us in the air. I mean, defensively, offensively, I think he could have scored. He was really close, um but I just felt like he just was a threat in the air and I think that's something that we lack at times and for him to come out and you know make some crucial blocks as well, I think it just reminded everyone how valuable he is as a player on the pitch, but also to see his leadership um come out for me was was really important.
00:09:09
Speaker
um So credit to him. For me, I'll say he was my man of the match. Now, there were some other standouts, as I said, and I think Kamara was another one who's just come back from injury, and from long-term injury. And for me, he he broke up the play in the midfield very well. He distributed the ball very well as as again, and I think he really set the tone for the midfield. I think our midfield throughout the match was a solid performance. We saw a lot of line-breaking passes, a lot of through balls um that we just weren't able to convert into goals, but I was just very pleased all in all with Kamara. I just thought overall it was a class performance.
00:09:58
Speaker
And someone who sometimes doesn't always get the praise that he deserves, and I'll go with Maddie Cash. um I think this match was fantastic for our outside backs in terms of getting forward and attacking. I thought Maddie Cash caused Brentford a lot of problems when he pushed forward. And of course, to get a goal of his own was fantastic.
00:10:25
Speaker
Now, I couldn't round this out without round this up without mentioning Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers. Ollie Watkins, of course, getting on the score sheet, but also picking up an assist, which is great for him and Morgan Rogers, who consistently and continues to look sharp and confident in his play. They're always enjoyable to watch, and I really love to see them combine up top to get forward.
00:10:56
Speaker
Again, very pleased with the individual performances, but also, like I said, the collective team performance as well. I'm glad that Emi Martinez did not have too much to do. um I know that he's managing that hairline fracture, so hopefully he'll continue to

League Ambitions and Home Advantage

00:11:16
Speaker
mend that. And, you know, with whatever he dealt with, this this match didn't cause too much of a problem.
00:11:23
Speaker

Love that. Love GSPN. If you have not already, check out the Global Sports Podcast Network. There are so many amazing podcasts and episodes out there for you to listen. So definitely have a look when you get the chance. Now, what does this win mean for Villa? Well, Villa moves up to seventh place in the table with 22 points. Now, seventh place is not sounding the greatest. But I will say it does sound a lot better than being in double digit, which is what we were in the last week.
00:12:49
Speaker
Now, as I mentioned, it's such a tight table. So seventh place with 22 points, we're only one point off a Europa League spot. We're only four points behind Manchester City, who's in fourth. So really, this is a huge result for Villa.
00:13:05
Speaker
A lot of people are saying that it's a confidence booster match. It was a confidence boost match, which honestly, I don't agree with it all. I don't think Villa in this kind of rut that we've been in ever struggled with confidence, we saw that we can perform in Champions League. I think just something wasn't clicking when it came to the league.
00:13:29
Speaker
Um, and I don't think that was confidence, but I think that, you you know, Emory's reigned everybody in. I think the focus is there, the concentration is there, the discipline is there. And I think Villa has realigned themselves. They've gotten back to where they need to be and have regained their focus and their sight. So hopefully we see that momentum bring on, continue on, sorry. And I think what Ali Watkins said in his post-match interview is a testament to this. He mentioned that the team's focus is now creating that momentum and turning Villa Park into a fortress again, which is fantastic. And I think, you know, Villa Park being a fort fortress has always been
00:14:15
Speaker
kind of the goal. He also referred to the squad as warriors and felt like tonight they showed that fight and that's something that I've noticed as well. In previous matches, I just felt like sometimes Villa wasn't, their heart wasn't in it or you could see that the other team wanted to win more than Villa. They wanted to win their 50-50s more than Villa. They wanted to win the aerial duels more than Villa. And I think today,
00:14:45
Speaker
From the moment the ref blew his whistle to start the match, we saw that fight in Villa, which is really really promising um for me to see.

Reflection and Future Prospects

00:14:55
Speaker
With all of that being said, my final thoughts and and to wrap it up, I really, really enjoyed watching this match. For me, it was special. It reminded me and it allowed me to reconnect with what makes this team great and why I am a Villa supporter, why I love Aston Villa. I saw defensive solidity. I saw that, you know, that attacking flair. And I saw a collective unit.
00:15:26
Speaker
It has been a tough couple of weeks. We all know we've all been there. We've all been going through it. But this result, I mean, it feels like a turning point. Please let me know if I'm way off base here because I don't want to get too ahead of myself. But I just saw some really promising things.
00:15:44
Speaker
And I just want to say a massive shout out to Joe from our GSPN Villa team, who is in attendance at Villa Park for the Brentford match. Joe, if you could make that a regular thing, that would be fantastic.
00:15:59
Speaker
I don't know if you were the good luck charm. um I don't know what it was about the energy, but we need that again on Saturday. So if you could just clear schedule, that would be fantastic. um And hopefully, Villa can take that performance from Brentford and ride that into the match Saturday.
00:16:19
Speaker
