Introduction and Context of European Competition

00:00:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Welcome everybody, welcome as always to the Daily Premier League podcast. It is Friday the 3rd of October, the day after ah three of our teams are involved in European competition.
00:00:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
The day that the next weekend's round of Premier League games begins. Of course, Ruxim's playing tonight as well. So anyway, without further ado, my name's Ken Davis, as you know by now. His name is Nick Britton. are you doing, Nick?
00:00:40
Nick Britten
I'm doing very well, thank you very much. I'm doing very well. It was a very interesting Premier League teams entrance into Europe last night. I thought there was some good games, some interesting talking points, some good performances and some not so good performances, it must be said.
00:00:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
yes and there's a lot to talk about actually not talk about so let's kick it off in the Europa League we've got two games in the Europa League one game in the conference and uh well Let's deal with the Europa League first. Let's deal with Forrest

Nottingham Forest's Europa League Challenges

00:01:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
first. Forrest were playing in the mighty Midtjylland in the Europa League and managed lose at home.
00:01:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Did you see the game? What your thoughts on the performance? And is it too early to say the wheels are falling off this?
00:01:28
Nick Britten
Well, ask the Forest fans because they were singing at their own manager who's been in charge for five games. Sacked in the morning. You're getting sacked in the morning. ah Pointing at Pastor Coglu. They booed him down a tunnel.
00:01:40
Nick Britten
They gave him an absolutely torrid night.
00:01:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've never seen this, this fast.
00:01:43
Nick Britten
So it's so bizarre, isn't it?
00:01:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Have you ever seen ah a fan base turn on a manager it so quick?
00:01:51
Nick Britten
It's normally the away fans, isn't it, that sing sacked in the morning?
00:01:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:01:54
Nick Britten
Not their own fans after five games.
00:01:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:01:58
Nick Britten
And it's not like they've been terrible. It really, it's not like they've been, i mean, they weren't great last night, be fair. And the and the the last goal was just defensive carnage, absolute suicide that you would, in brackets, never see under Nuno, close brackets.
00:02:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:02:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:02:10
Nick Britten
But they were terrible. It's not like they've been dreadful in games. They haven't been finishing and they've just not been taking their opportunities. But this way too early. It's way too early to be demanding that your own coach get sacked. I don't understand the mindset.
00:02:26
Nick Britten
The only thing I can think of is that the Nottingham Forest fans are so spoiled and so entitled after one good season in the Premier League that somehow they think they deserve better. Well, they don't deserve better. And they should shut up and let Ange Postacoglu do his job.
00:02:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
did Well, interesting, because it didn't sound when I was... Obviously, this all happened after the third goal went in, and it was 3-1, and they're all disappointed. But it didn't sound like it was a a vocal, tiny section of the...
00:02:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
of the attendance, if you like. It sounded like it was everyone was joining in. Wouldn't be surprised if Maranakis was joining in. i mean what I mean, it seemed to be, it was resounding around the stadium.
00:03:11
Nick Britten
and wasn't It wasn't that bad. it wasn't like echoing around the shores of the Trent. It wasn't.
00:03:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was.
00:03:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was.

Ange Postecoglou's Response to Criticism

00:03:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
i think, i mean, how would you feel if you were Ange Postacoglu, listening to that after five games?
00:03:18
Nick Britten
It wasn't.
00:03:22
Nick Britten
Well, I'll tell you exactly how he feels because and this is absolutely hot off the press breaking news. In the last few moments, he has addressed exactly that at his press conference ahead of the game away at Newcastle on Saturday.
00:03:34
Nick Britten
And he said, ah so in the last few moments, he said, it's a valid assumption in modern football that there's always a manager that's under pressure. That's just part and parcel of what we do. But I don't think that way.
00:03:45
Nick Britten
Put it this way, I knew I was getting sacked at Tottenham about three or four months before I did, but that didn't stop me from winning something. It doesn't enter my head. My responsibility lies in making sure this football club progresses and gets to a position where it can challenge for things.
00:04:00
Nick Britten
If I start putting timelines to this or that, or worry... ah what is going to happen next week that I'm not performing the role I've been given. I just don't think it's helpful to anyone. At the end of the day, have to concentrate on the environment, the training, the way we play, <unk> etc. And then he finishes with saying, I'm still very, very strong in my belief that we are not too far away. And it's difficult to argue with that too much because I don't think they are too far away.
00:04:24
Nick Britten
um But nonetheless, you can't ignore... You can't ignore what's happened. You can't ignore the reaction of the supporters. But I don't think the reaction of the supporters, if this was West Ham, we'd all be having a go at them and saying they're just entitled a bunch of people who think they deserve better than what they deserve.
00:04:39
Nick Britten
but they ah Yeah, I did, yeah, but I was waiting for you to agree with me.
00:04:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
You just did say that about them.
00:04:45
Nick Britten
But yeah, I think Forest fans need to rein it in. They need to rein it in. They need to get behind a manager and they need to understand that What is happening is is a transition from a manager who plays a certain way to a manager who plays a completely different way.
00:04:59
Nick Britten
And it might take a bit of time. If they were losing every game 4-5-0 and looking totally clueless, I could understand perhaps some of their anxiety.
00:05:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:05:08
Nick Britten
But the reality is that they there aren't. You can point at individual players for making individual mistakes during games for some of their losing run of late and the reason they're not picking up points. generally, the overall style of play, as they move from a very defensive style to a very attacking style, hasn't been bad.
00:05:24
Nick Britten
They've been creating chances. They've been creating opportunities. They just haven't been putting them away.

Forest's Tactical Transition

00:05:28
Nick Britten
They need to be a little bit more solid in the back. They need to tighten up the defensive line. But I thought it was very poor.
00:05:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:05:34
Nick Britten
I thought it was very poor what I heard last night from the Forest supporters. ah Totally unnecessary and very unfair.
00:05:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I agree with all that. I do you agree with all that. Problem is, ah this has just got the smell of something that's going to go bad very quickly to me.
00:05:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Obviously, you've got an international break coming up. They've got a really difficult game away at Newcastle the weekend, which I think they'll lose. That's going to build ah another layer of pressure on this.
00:06:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
A couple of interesting things about what Bostokoglu said in his statement there. He said he knew he was getting sacked from Spurs three or four months before he was. Do you think that's true?
00:06:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you think somebody sat him down and said, I mean, is that him thinking, oh, I might get sacked? Or do you think someone is sat him down? Daniel Levy sat him down and said, listen, the end of the season, we're going to make a change.
00:06:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Keep it together. We'll make sure everyone's okay. We'll make sure you're all right. But actually, we are going to make a change in three months, whatever happens. Do you really reckon that happened?
00:06:40
Nick Britten
If I was a conspiracy theorist, and you know, Ken, that I'm not.
00:06:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, you're not. I am.
00:06:45
Nick Britten
You are. so if ah But if I was, so if I was you, I might be thinking, well, funnily enough, three full season three or four months before the season exactly coincided with the time where he, by his very own admission, chucked in the league to focus on the Europa League.
00:07:01
Nick Britten
Essentially, it's ah not' sorry, when I say chucked the league, what I mean the Premier League.
00:07:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:07:04
Nick Britten
he Essentially abandoned the Premier League.
00:07:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah. We're not going down, but we're not we'll change our focus.
00:07:07
Nick Britten
going down. We're not going to do anything. look Exactly that. So so i'm going to abandon the Premier League and focus all my efforts, all my resources, all my best teams, all my players on winning the Europa League.
00:07:18
Nick Britten
So if you are a conspiracy theorist, you might want to put one and one together and come up with possibly two. may come up with 10. Who knows? We don't know. But he also isn't stupid enough to think that Tottenham finishing 17th, 17th or 18th.
00:07:33
Nick Britten
I know they finished, I can't remember.
00:07:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
17th 17th
00:07:36
Nick Britten
Tottenham finishing 17th in the Premier League is not acceptable. And any manager taking Tottenham to 17th the Premier League is going to get sacked. You must know that.
00:07:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
if but but three or four months to go there's no guarantee you're going to finish 17th you could have asked you could have finished 11th but
00:07:51
Nick Britten
Well, you might Yes, you're right.
00:07:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:07:51
Nick Britten
You know, you you might have done and and we know that a middle section
00:07:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
it sounds to me It sounds to me that someone actually, one of the things he's said in that, ah he's let something out there, that actually someone did sit him down and say, we're making a change, keep everything together, don't tell anyone, but we are making a change.
00:08:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, the only...
00:08:09
Nick Britten
It's very disappointing. It's very disappointing that the from what I've seen so far, and this is literally hot off the press as we are coming to broadcast, that nobody's actually picked him up on that and asked him and asked him the question, when you say that, do you actually mean it?
00:08:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:08:21
Nick Britten
Did actually somebody say to you, or are you talking so yeah are talking sort of figuratively?
00:08:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. So we're actually really doing that. Yeah. Yeah, that's that's that's that's very interesting. The second thing is on on this, obviously there's quite a lot of cutaways to Marinakis looking, one, dishevelled, looks like he slept under a bridge, and second, yeah, I mean, rest up.
00:08:38
Nick Britten
Well, he always looks he always looks like that. never I've never seen him look any other way.
00:08:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
But he looked dishevelled, he looked disheartened. my My thing about Marinakis is, And let's be honest, it was ridiculous, ridiculous what happened with Nuno. i mean I mean, Nuno was doing a brilliant job, a brilliant job for Forrest.
00:08:58
Nick Britten
Do you know what, just before you move on just for minute, move on on this.
00:08:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:09:02
Nick Britten
It's really interesting watching the the social media narrative of the Nottingham Forest supporters change so quickly about Nuno.
00:09:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
yet
00:09:13
Nick Britten
All I'm reading now is Nuno. Oh, he was rubbish. It was boring. The football was terrible. weren't going anywhere under him. i Wait a minute. That's not what you were saying two months ago.
00:09:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
no
00:09:23
Nick Britten
what is that? What is that about?
00:09:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
well But you know what? It's changing back now because they were chanting for Nuno last night as well. So so i I think the interesting thing is for for me is that Marinakis is its just Marinakis. He doesn't operate in the same rules as everyone else.
00:09:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
what he got What he got involved with Nuno was disgraceful last year. And obviously we all knew at the time, and we were ahead of the curve on this one, we said this is going to break down real quick.
00:09:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
And guess what? It broke down real quick. Because once you once you go over that line, there's no coming back from it. And that's what happened. I've just got a feeling, and owners like Mananakis, loads of money, Southern European, there are just some some owners who go through managers like Socks.

Speculation on Nottingham Forest's Ownership

00:10:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
like socks And I've got a feeling I would not be surprised. I would not be surprised if this ends very quickly and in a very public kind of ah display of ire and unhappiness.
00:10:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's my prediction. We got it right before with Forrest. I think we'll get it right again.
00:10:38
Nick Britten
I guess it depends on how often Maranacos wear socks. We'll see. Because if he doesn't wear...
00:10:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. All right.
00:10:43
Nick Britten
If he goes through socks once a year, then Ange is probably safe for another 11 months.
00:10:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
T-shirts. T-shirts. T-shirts.
00:10:50
Nick Britten
But you're right. I can see this going wrong very quickly. no and Not through any fault of Ange Postacoglu. I'm kind of on his side here. I think it takes...
00:10:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Me too. Yeah.
00:10:59
Nick Britten
I think it takes a little bit of time to to change things and turn things around. And the and the Premier League is is a very, very difficult league to get anything out of.
00:11:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:11:06
Nick Britten
so i worry I worry a little bit about it. I mean, he said if um he said just a few moments ago, it seems the mindset of the players is that first we need to get punished. before we start to compete. We're letting ourselves down key areas football that changes football matches. And when listen, we've said this about Derby this season.
00:11:24
Nick Britten
You know, you never they never start they're never interested until the second half and normally they're losing by then. And it seems to be that that is the catalyst. And players, we don't know how the players have reacted to Nuno going.
00:11:35
Nick Britten
and and arriving. We also know, Ken, because we've been around football for a very, very long time, is that players have the ultimate power over the fate of the manager. Because they decide they don't fancy it and they're going to down tools and they're not going to bother, they know that then the ones who aren't going to get sacrificed or sacked or sold, it's always, always, always going to be the manager.
00:11:54
Nick Britten
So players can determine the fate of any manager by either playing their heart out for and running through a brick wall or just not really bothering him.
00:12:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, i think I think that's right. this I thought they were pretty ordinary at set pieces yesterday. They conceded two from set pieces. i think the ah I don't think noon a Nuno Forest team would have conceded three yesterday.
00:12:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
But the final thing I'll say on it is, isn't karma a beautiful thing? Yeah, isn't karma. You know, they've they've got rid of Nuno. They've got another manager in. And to be honest, Maranakis has brought it on himself.
00:12:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that's where we shall leave Forrest. I have to say, as ah as ah in as a note, ah Nick's a Derby fan. I'm a semi-Derby fan. We're not exactly neutral on the trials and tribulations of Forrest.
00:12:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
we do we We do. We like to try to stay objective, but sometimes it's quite difficult.
00:12:52
Nick Britten
i think I think I am very objective. And I, more than anybody, have praised Forrest to the Hilt over the last year or so. And I do look at this through an objective eye when I'm doing this podcast. When I'm not doing this podcast, it's a totally different story.
00:13:04

Aston Villa's Europa League Comeback

00:13:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
younoke So we're going to go from some wheels, which we're coming off, clearly, to wheels which you're clearly going back on.
00:13:53
Nick Britten
so i'm wondering
00:13:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
And i'm I'm referring to... is value
00:14:01
Nick Britten
That's the worst. That didn't work.
00:14:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
hard
00:14:03
Nick Britten
That's the worst segue I've ever heard.
00:14:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
and and That is... Segways have wheels as well.
00:14:08
Nick Britten
Yeah. Yeah. that was yeah
00:14:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that there you are. So just extending that metaphor even further. so So Villa have climbed aboard the Segway and are steaming along the road that is the Europa League. Because they away at Feyenoord last night, 1-2-0.
00:14:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Goals from Buendia and McGinn. McGinn's back on song. ah I mean, they're shaking off their their early season misfiring, really, aren't
00:14:36
Nick Britten
Yep, very much a sense that they are clawing their way back into form. Two goals, as you say, from two players who also scored last weekend. So confidence, you can see, starting to creep back in.
00:14:49
Nick Britten
And much more like it from Villa, I thought. Much more like it. I thought they played well. I thought it was fairly comfortable. And they very much look like the sort of team that the we kind of expect them to be.
00:15:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
The team of last year, i thought oh know i i watched a bit of the game yesterday, I didn't see it all. But there seemed to be a lot more energy. ah There seemed to be better balance in the team. ah they just got like this last year and it soaked up a bit of pressure. Feyenoord looked half decent, but Villa just always looked in control. Two late goals, but they deserved it and I thought it was a pretty good performance and I think we can expect to see Villa steaming up the league then.
00:15:34
Nick Britten
Well, I wouldn't go that far, but certainly, you know, these things, these things well, start small steps, but they can become... They can gather pace very quickly. Winning runs or confidence can gather pace very, very quickly. only takes one little bit of... it And I think back to Ollie Watkins' goal last weekend, which which was the equalising goal.
00:15:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:15:54
Nick Britten
And there wasn't it was a good finish from Watkins, but there was an element of fortune about it because as he ran through and chipped the keeper, it went... It ballooned miles in the air.
00:16:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:16:03
Nick Britten
but let you had And those things can very easily just sort drift and hit the bar or land on the top of the net. And it landed in the goal without hitting the ground first. So you're talking ah matter of inches. And if that hits the bar and comes down and comes out and Villa go on to lose the game...
00:16:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. It's very different.
00:16:19
Nick Britten
So sliding doors moments, but it is those moments, i know it's your favourite word, Ken.
00:16:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
But...
00:16:23
Nick Britten
It is those moments and in in games which can change seasons. And I wonder if this is the turning point for Villa. Of course, if they're going the weekend, we'll all be sitting here with egg on our face. But maybe it is the turning point for Villa. And that's a good performance last weekend, good performance ah last night.
00:16:38
Nick Britten
And, you know, they'll take that into the weekend, feeling a lot more confident than A lot more confident and because they've got, well, i mean, they've got a good game at the weekend at home to Burnley.
00:16:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, Burnley.
00:16:51
Nick Britten
It's a good game to keep building.
00:16:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, great game after these two last two games, I think.
00:16:53
Nick Britten
that Yeah.
00:16:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's just what they needed.
00:16:56
Nick Britten
and And and we're sitting down we're sitting here this time last week going, oh my goodness, where's it all going wrong? What's going to happen? Are they ever going to get going? We could be sitting here on Sunday night going, they've had three wins in less than a week.
00:17:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think they will. And I think we will.
00:17:10
Nick Britten
Well, in a week, yeah.
00:17:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think will be saying that.
00:17:11
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:17:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it's... Yeah, I mean, of course, they didn't score for the first four games or maybe even the first five games. There was plenty sliding doors moments in them five games. So I think the bit of look that Ollie Watkins had at the weekend where that ball just drips under the the bar, ah they probably had it coming because they they out of did add a few ah go the other way for them, I think, in those early games. So well done, Villa.
00:17:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah we I was starting to think it might yeah the pressure might be building on Emery. You can see it.
00:17:43
Nick Britten
Well, you said, and this is where this is where you look at me in the eye again and say, yet again, i was wrong, Nick, and you were right, because you predicted Emery be out of a job and it was all going down the toilet for Villa.
00:17:54
Nick Britten
And I said, no, they're very good. So he was good manager. He's just going to turn this around.
00:17:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah and And to be fair be fair, he's turned it around. And you know they're too good a team. I really do think they're too good a team to be struggling down there for so long. But it was he was starting to look a bit dicey.
00:18:10
Nick Britten
Still don't hear that apology.
00:18:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
ye Yeah, sorry about that. um but what we are what we are going to see, obviously, you've got it's the international break. Another international break after ah after these games. I think Aston Villa are going into the international break with that quite a lot of confidence, really.
00:18:28
Nick Britten
Yeah, no, i think I think you're right. I think you're right. And good turnaround. And as we've said all along, or at least as I have said all along, it was only a matter of time.
00:18:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and it's nice to see McGinn on the score sheet.
00:18:38
Nick Britten
Yeah, I'm a massive i'm a massive John McGinn fan.
00:18:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah,
00:18:40
Nick Britten
It feels like he's been around football and Villa for 20, 30, 40, 50 years, and he to have been there forever. And he keeps rolling it out season after season after season. And there was a bit of controversy earlier on in the season where he was being forced to play on the right-hand side of the pitch.
00:18:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah he was playing out a position, wasn't he?
00:18:55
Nick Britten
Didn't work.
00:18:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, it wouldn't have worked.
00:18:56
Nick Britten
Get him back in centre mid. Get him back attacking the box. And he will score goals because he always has. Great player.
00:19:01
Global Sports Podcast Network

Crystal Palace's Conference League Success

00:19:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
And finally, dropping down into the conference league, which, interestingly, of course, palaces are only in because Forrest dobbed them in about the ownership thing.
00:20:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah And they should have been in Europe at least, but they're in the conference league. An absolutely crucified Dynamo Kiev,
00:20:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
not Kiev, Kiev, last night, 2-0. ah But it was a very one-sided game. From what I saw, they were very comfortable throughout. Constant threat. They just looked the finish article to me, Palace, at the moment. They just looked absolutely a team on top of the game.
00:20:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
The real deal. It was a really great display. Extended their unbeaten run now to 19 matches in all competitions. And... Never for a second last night did it look in doubt. I don't think I've ever seen a more one-sided set a highlights than last night.
00:20:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah what was it Because I know your your your villa your your palace grew in through and through, you would have enjoyed it.
00:20:56
Nick Britten
yeah i watch the yeah Yeah, I watched the game. I watched the game. um And I thought they played very well. It was very comfortable up until...
00:21:09
Nick Britten
um Until perhaps the the last 15 when Sosa got sent off for two two yellows in the space of two minutes.
00:21:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:14
Nick Britten
And then Kiev had a kind of couple of goldmouth scrambles.
00:21:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:19
Nick Britten
And you just thought, well, if they get one now, it could be a little bit sticky. But they didn't. And then the last 10 minutes was pretty ordinary. But Palace doing what Palace do.
00:21:27
Nick Britten
And they put out a very, very strong side. They only made two changes from last night. I think ah Will Hughes came into the team, didn't he? And...
00:21:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
I played well, I thought.
00:21:39
Nick Britten
Well, he does. I mean, he's never he's never ever going to let you down, is he? He's never ever going to let you down. and And, you know, Nkechi has come on again. He's scored other the goals. That's two and two for him.
00:21:50
Nick Britten
A player that Palace need because... One of the things Oliver Glasner does is he puts out his strongest team in every game. Now, it's good there's an international break after the weekend because calit Palace is just going to need to relax and reset and rest.
00:21:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay.
00:22:02
Nick Britten
But the the the challenge they've got as the season goes on is if he wants to put out his strongest team every game, Sunday, Thursday, Sunday, Thursday, he's going to start picking up injuries. And we've talked before about one of the risks of Palace is their lack of depth.
00:22:17
Nick Britten
So it's very, very important that Nketiah is playing and scoring. Because if Matessa, for whatever reason, is injured or they need him to come on and score a goal, he's not coming out of the cold where he hasn't played or scored for half a season or or or a season.
00:22:30
Nick Britten
So it's good that Palace, actually, and the Conference League is quite good for this kind of thing because Palace, they're more than capable of winning it.
00:22:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think they they they could be have favourites I think the best team in the league
00:22:37
Nick Britten
Because if it's and more than yeah that that Yeah, they're more than capable of of winning it. um You know, Sosa came on, didn't do that well, then got sent off. Hughes came in, ah you know, played well.
00:22:50
Nick Britten
Front three of Kamada and Pinho, other side of Mateta. Again, it's trialling a little bit. Not really where you'd normally see Kamada in a front three, ah but it kind of worked. They played okay.
00:23:03
Nick Britten
And he was able to make you know able to make changes and get the job done. So, you know, happy days.
00:23:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Very good to assist for Pinho last night. I thought Nketiah looked sharp for what I saw of the game. He suddenly looks a decent player to me.
00:23:19
Nick Britten
a decent player. I mean, if you think of his... Back at Arsenal, he was a good player. that and When he got his move to Palace...
00:23:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was off the boil, didn't he? And why did they why did they get why did they move him on
00:23:30
Nick Britten
Well, because he was never getting he was always going to be second fiddle. He wasn't quite good enough to be the main striker Arsenal.
00:23:35
Nick Britten
And he had a little run in the team and it just didn't didn't work. So Palace looked to be a better fit, but he got off to a slow start at his career at Palace. And then, you know, Glasner comes in and and turns Mateta into ah ah kind of very average everyday footballer into an absolute world beater.
00:23:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:23:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:55
Nick Britten
And then, you know, Nkechia's going, oh you know, um'm I'm very much second in command here. But his job is very much to provide that backup and be ready and score goals. And that goal he scored against Liverpool the other day.
00:24:09
Nick Britten
would have done him the world of good.
00:24:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:24:11
Nick Britten
Absolute confidence. One of those goals that you can just see the relief and the confidence surging through him. And he's built on that by getting another goal last night. And that's really, I think that's massively important Palace, that that position is covered with somebody who can come on and they can trust to do a job.
00:24:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, looked very good. Good goal from Munoz last night as well. A towering header from the back post.
00:24:35
Nick Britten
Yeah, I love Munoz. I love a goal-scoring wing-back.
00:24:38
Nick Britten
And hes but he's certainly that. He's a lot of his fault.
00:24:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he really attacked the ball. that it was It was a really good header.
00:24:41
Nick Britten
Yeah, he's a lot of his
00:24:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
You don't normally get wing-backs rising like a salmon, heading it miles in the air, but just leaping into the far place.
00:24:48
Nick Britten
fault.
00:24:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
great goal. Great header. So well done, Anthony Munoz. um ah Glasner's stock is just going up and up and up. Every time I see an article about Crystal Palace, it's it's kind of tinged with if they keep Glasner, if they keep Glasner.

Future Prospects for Glasner at Crystal Palace

00:25:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, eventually, he's he's going to wave goodbye, isn't he? He's just too good.
00:25:12
Nick Britten
Well, his contract's up at the end of the season.
00:25:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:25:16
Nick Britten
um So you would expect him to move at the end of the season, if not before. And we've we've talked ah we've talked a lot about this. I think he'd be a fantastic fit for Manchester United.
00:25:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
I imagine.
00:25:28
Nick Britten
i think he'd be he's the sort of manager they need. And that might happen.
00:25:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:25:34
Nick Britten
That might happen. You know, we don't really know what's going on with Amarim Kamp. We can't work out whether there's any point sacking him or whether they need to sack him. It's just very difficult. There's such chaos going on Old Trafford. But if if if even if he doesn't stay in England, he'll go to yeah a very good European club, I'm sure.
00:25:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
He will. I want him to stay in England, though.
00:25:51
Nick Britten
i want him to stay at Palace.
00:25:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm sorry to break this to you, Nick.
00:25:53
Nick Britten
I want him to stay at Palace, but I don't think he will. I want Gage to stay Palace, I don't think he will.
00:25:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think that's fairly unlikely. um
00:25:59
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:26:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, Palace have got Everton away at weekend. We both predicted that to be a draw. Having said that, ah watching the performance last night, I thought they were absolutely dominant.
00:26:08
Nick Britten
I might change my mind on that.
00:26:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, he can't.
00:26:09
Nick Britten
Yeah, I might change my mind.
00:26:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Too late. Too late.
00:26:12
Nick Britten
Why did the game just kick off for two days?
00:26:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Too late. and it's already and what i've I've already submitted it to the FA, the three d ah predictions, I'm afraid. Man United, by the way, just on the side, Glasner-esque aside, home against Sunderland. They lose that one.
00:26:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah The phone, Glasner's phone, could be read up by yeah sunday yeah Sunday afternoon. Thank
00:26:32
Nick Britten
Yeah, comments from Ameren coming in from his pre-match press conference as we speak, ah says that we're not losing because of the system. Our maximum effort in little things is not the same in every match. We have to find that balance.
00:26:47
Nick Britten
It will change everything. And then talking about the criticism that he receives, it's normal and you cannot run away from results. Last season doesn't matter.
00:26:56
Nick Britten
It's not they were good last season.
00:26:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, it mattered last season.
00:26:58
Nick Britten
Yeah. Yeah, I was going to say, it's not like, oh, they're suddenly on a bad spell. I think it does matter because it just, you know, think it underlines a pattern of performance here.
00:27:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:27:08
Nick Britten
and We've had six games this season and we've lost three. The way we create goals and chances is nothing to do with the system. I'm not saying they will play better in a different system. We aren't losing because of the system.
00:27:19
Nick Britten
And he's probably the only person who thinks that because Palace play the same system and it works really, really well. So what do you take from the coming team?
00:27:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, in a way, that's that's an argument that's an argument that Anarim is right, that actually the system itself is neutral. if The problem is, if you haven't got the players who either understand it or can play to it, ah well, you're going to struggle.
00:27:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think that's why you make it.
00:27:44
Nick Britten
They don't. You change the system. You change the system that suits the players you've got.
00:27:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, you should do.
00:27:48
Nick Britten
So the system is the problem because you can't change the players, but you can change the system.
00:27:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes. I...
00:27:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, i get i get your point. and And that is exactly what the... it ah Similarly, that's what Postacoglu is facing. And, you know, we have got a raft of managers this season in the Premier League who seem to be wedded to a system.
00:28:10
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:28:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think that's quite a unique situation.
00:28:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah The problem
00:28:13
Nick Britten
but da and mean i think I think it's interesting. The theme of this press conference from Ameren was inconsistency. So he's talking about his team looking disjointed. He says when something works one day, but not the other not the next day, that's a very different thing for it from it never working, so which which is very true.
00:28:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's true.
00:28:28
Nick Britten
So what he's suggesting is the old the old manager's cliche here is that, yeah, but the lads look at training they look great in training in the week, which you often hear managers say when they're trying to trying to explain yet another defeat.
00:28:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:28:39
Nick Britten
Yeah, but we trained really well. And he's suggesting essentially that there's just inconsistency with how they train and then when they go out on a pitch to perform.
00:28:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's down to a manager there.
00:28:50
Nick Britten
Yeah, oh I don't really buy it.
00:28:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, I don't mind that for a second.
00:28:52
Nick Britten
I don't really buy it, if you want to see It bit of a feeble excuse to say, yeah, I'm doing my job, thanks very much, ah but it's not my fault if the players can't do theirs.
00:28:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't mind that for a second.
00:29:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's not exactly motivational. Let's put it that way.
00:29:05
Nick Britten
no
00:29:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think the issue this issue with the United is that they're all just bereft of confidence, really.
00:29:10
Nick Britten
I was going to say nothing, nothing, nothing about Ameren.
00:29:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway,
00:29:13
Nick Britten
Nothing about Ameren that I see is motivational.
00:29:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
this is true. The final thing about that, he says it's nothing it's not really about

Impact of Rigid Management on Team Performance

00:29:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
the system. All we ever talk about, or every single press conference Amarim is involved in, 75% of it is about the system.
00:29:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
So it is about the system, Ruben.
00:29:31
Nick Britten
Yeah, so just so change it. Change the narrative.
00:29:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:29:34
Nick Britten
Do something different. Try and win games another way.
00:29:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, makes a lot of sense. Well, 29 minutes and 41 seconds of ah prize-winning football punditry. I think you'd agree, everybody that's listening.

00:30:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
