00:00:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
I am the cheese in a Nicky B sandwich. How are you doing, gents? Nick Bird, come with you first. How are you doing, mate?

Reflecting on Predictions and Topics Overview

00:00:31
Nick
Happy to be back with you after we ah made some stellar predictions, I think, yesterday.
00:00:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
We nailed it, didn't we? We absolutely nailed it. And we're going to wallow in our predictive success a little bit later in the podcast.
00:00:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nick Britton, ah sporting his Derby County shirt circa about 1995. How are doing? how how you doing
00:00:55
Nick Britten
I never, ever, ever, by the way, ever want to be thinking about you in being in the middle of the sandwich where my name is in the same thing. So let's just get that image right out of my head. No, we're all good. Thank very much. Very good. Good to be back after my 24-hour break from this mighty podcast.
00:01:10
Nick Britten
It's all good.
00:01:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, great. So I'm sorry, I didn't mean to imply that you were in any way involved in my cheese sandwich. It's not a Nick cheese sandwich.
00:01:20
Nick Britten
You're just making it worse. Just shut up and move on.
00:01:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's really... It's purely a threesome. So let's let's move on in our with our threesome. got three things to talk about today in this threesome. Firstly, I want to just run over the games last night. We all watched them. They were interesting.
00:01:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Interesting pointers from that. ah We're also going to take a closer look at West Ham because there was a letter of no confidence we're in, as we know, from fan group there.
00:01:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
something of a response from the West Ham Board today. Interesting response, I thought. We'll talk about that. And thirdly, And we'll probably do this in passing. Liverpool, comeback kings again.
00:01:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is it a strength? are we Are they really just paping over some cracks that eventually are going to break? So we're to talk about that.

Liverpool's Performance and Analysis

00:02:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll probably get Nick to give his predictions on the two games tonight, which is Manchester City against Napoli and Newcastle against Barcelona.
00:02:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that we'll see what happens there. So Nick's already shaking his head. From...
00:02:20
Nick Britten
I might give my predictions on your terrible accents, yeah. I'm all right.
00:02:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
I beg your pardon. Right, OK. So, last night's games, Liverpool 3-2, Bayern 3-1 against Chelsea. Coming to you first, Nicky Bird.
00:02:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah You predicted victory for Liverpool. I predicted 2-1 with a late goal involved. FYI, everyone, a late goal was predicted. ah what What did you take of what you take away from the Liverpool game last night?
00:02:50
Nick
that hopefully they can't keep getting away with it from an Arsenal perspective. But they they definitely dominated the game. they looked I think Verts looked far better yesterday than he had in any of their other games.
00:03:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:03:05
Nick
I don't think Izak really did anything as we kind of predicted yesterday as well. But they got over the line. i Watching those corners in... At a time, it felt like one would eventually go in because they were finding Kanata, they were finding Van Dijk.
00:03:20
Nick
The set-piece defence was pretty poor and then eventually Van Dijk turns one in and it's the same old story again so far this season for Liverpool.
00:03:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Same old story. You're right. Salah looked down more on song. I thought, obviously, they got off to an absolute flyer. Two goals in six minutes. Nick Britton, Nick brit and neck in blue, what's your ah what was your takeaway from the game last night?
00:03:43
Nick Britten
that Liverpool are very, very good and really annoying at scoring late goals. And you knew, i'd turn I was watching a game with my son and I said to him, when when that corner came that he scored from, I said to him, they will score because that's what they do. They score in the 90th minute plus of every game they play, it feels like.
00:04:04
Nick Britten
and And what Nick just said there a moment ago was absolutely right. It was coming, it was coming and it was coming and you could just about tell Now, on the weekend, they needed an absolutely, ridiculously, ah just a moment of utter madness to get a penalty to win it in the last seconds. Here, it was a brilliant header. It was a really, really good header from Van Dijk.
00:04:24
Nick Britten
He's lost his man. he's he's He's sort of jostled him out of the way. He's taken a step back and he's put a header in pretty much the only places it could have gone in to actually enter the net. It was a very, very good header. don't think, as much as we might all laugh at Liverpool scoring in the 90 plus minute every single game, you mustn't detract from Actually, it was very, very, very good goal.
00:04:43
Nick Britten
I thought it was a slightly better performance. from it in fact, I thought, no, no, let's get this right. It was a much better performance from Liverpool, particularly in the first half than we've seen in the Premier League so far. Salah looked much more interested. he's scored a brilliant goal. I mean, that was a really, as much as you want moan about the defending and it was poor defending. It was ah it was a really, really good goal.
00:05:02
Nick Britten
and There was a middle part of the game where the Liverpool that we've seen quite a lot of this season so far in the Premier League kind of kind of came up to the up to the shore, if you like, because... They just looked a little bit off, but they stepped off the gas. And and suddenly from kind of 2-0 going into halftime, you know, there was that goal just before halftime and injury time, and then another one midway through.
00:05:23
Nick Britten
And you then started to wonder, wow, okay, fine. Are they actually going to lose this? Are they going to lose this game? But they rallied and they did what Liverpool do so well. And one of the things that I love about them is just they never, ever, ever stop.
00:05:36
Nick Britten
They just go and go and go and go and go.
00:05:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank
00:05:40
Nick Britten
And as we've seen, you know, that just bears fruit. They could have said, OK, you know what? 2-2 is all right. We'll settle for that. We were 2-0 up, but it's better than losing. We'll take a point. And a lot of managers would have had that attitude amongst them. A lot of players have. But they've got an absolutely winning mentality.
00:05:57
Nick Britten
And that gets you over the line in games like this.
00:05:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think you're right. They kind of... They just think they can win from anywhere, I think, Liverpool. and And history was suggesting... We've been saying this about Liverpool since the first game the season against Bournemouth, haven't we? weren When Bournemouth came back to 2-2. And we thought, well, oh dear.
00:06:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they keep repeating it, repeating, repeating it. We're going to come back to this later in the show. I'm not sure... There

Bayern vs Chelsea Game Discussion

00:06:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
are issues, and I think we want to talk about we'll talk about those issues a bit later on.
00:06:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
The second game, Bayern against Chelsea. First thing I want to mention about this is that weird ah free kick where he seemed, and I'll be interested in your thoughts, particularly you, Nick, because you're a ref.
00:06:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah He seemed to deliberately kick it at the ref. and therefore get a kind of a drop ball from a free kick and just break up the play a little bit from ah you know from that set piece.
00:06:50
Nick Britten
Thank you.
00:06:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
One, do you think it was deliberate? And secondly, do you think, actually, is there any strategic advantage to doing that?
00:07:01
Nick Britten
It's quite interesting, isn't I mean, we know players seek every tiny little minute advantage. We know that already. We we know the antics that they get up to. I've never seen... We know what the rules are now, by the way, just in case you don't know.
00:07:14
Nick Britten
The rules are this.
00:07:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank
00:07:16
Nick Britten
If the ball hits the referee and rebounds to a team to give them a clear advantage, the referee has to stop the game and it's an uncontested drop ball to the team who is in possession of the ball.
00:07:29
Nick Britten
So he doesn't have to stop the game. So if I kick the ball and it hit the referee and bounce back to me and nothing happened and there was no disadvantage to me, then you can carry on the game. You don't actually have to stop it.
00:07:42
Nick Britten
But that that doesn't normally happen. Normally it hits the referee and then, you know, go somewhere else and and and then he has to kind of feel like he has to stop the game. I've never known actually somebody kick it deliberately at the referee in order to stop the game and gain an advantage. That seems to me bit counterintuitive because you've got the ball already, what's the point of gaining a drop ball, which then allows the opposition to get back into shape and get back into position by kicking it at the referee? It doesn't really make a lot of sense, not lot logic to it. So I can't see that it was done deliberately, no.
00:08:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it led immediately to a goal.
00:08:17
Nick Britten
Well, that's just that's just the way it goes, isn't it
00:08:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Immediately. but did it It was a very funny passage of play. did it looks It looked it'll very you look quite deliberate to me. Nick nick Bird, what's your what's your opinion on that one?
00:08:31
Nick
I had it muted at that point. So I i just assumed that the ref had got it wrong and it wasn't supposed to be a free kick and then did the drop ball. And obviously it works its way out to a lease.
00:08:42
Nick
He puts it across and gets put in by Chalabur.
00:08:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. yeah
00:08:46
Nick
Yeah, I just assumed the ref had made a mistake and it was supposed to be a drop ball the whole time.
00:08:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, I think what we're going to see is millions of players smacking the ball at the ref now ah for the next ah next six weeks until it gets banned.
00:09:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, OK. ah So just to recap on the game, it finished brilliantly predicted by Nick Bird at 3-1 for Bayern, which is exactly what you predicted. I predicted a 2-0 for Munich.
00:09:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Penalty, bit of a soft penalty, I thought. Kane, of course, scored great from the spot.
00:09:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Great goal from Cole Palmer, by the way. I think Cole Palmer is someone to have on, especially you, Nick. I'm looking at you now, Nick Britton, bottom of the league, fantasy league. This might be someone to consider for your fantasy league.
00:09:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Terrible mistake.
00:09:37
Nick Britten
but oh kind um right I've got Karl Palmer in my team. He's just been injured. he's been I've had him in the team since day one.
00:09:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right.
00:09:42
Nick Britten
He's just been injured.
00:09:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, this is why your but which is why you're bottom of the fantasy Premier League.
00:09:44
Nick Britten
By the way, it wasn't the softball. the only reason I've got him with our fantasy Premier League team, which consists, by the way, of only three teams, is that you and the other bloke who's in it have got Haaland as captain. That is the only reason.
00:09:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
You are allowed to do that.
00:09:58
Nick Britten
That is the only reason.
00:09:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm just saying it's not...
00:10:00
Nick Britten
you're not. No, you're not.
00:10:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's not yeah If two people do it in the three, you can't do it.
00:10:02
Nick Britten
No, I don't think so. yeah
00:10:06
Nick Britten
No, I know that.
00:10:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Just by the way, you might want to check the GSPN League.
00:10:07
Nick Britten
I know that. I'm
00:10:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah you are you Are you checking out the GSPN Fantasy Football League?
00:10:13
Nick Britten
not even in that.

Match Predictions and Banter

00:10:14
Nick Britten
i
00:10:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's 22 players in that. Who's top of that?
00:10:17
Nick Britten
Yeah, that's not the point. The point is, player for player, I'm doing better than you.
00:10:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, okay. Okay.
00:10:24
Nick Britten
You've just got Haaland as captain.
00:10:26
Nick Britten
And anyway, it wasn't a soft penalty.
00:10:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:10:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah
00:10:28
Nick Britten
It was not a soft penalty last night. It was a very well-earned penalty by Harry Kane, who turned his man and was brought down.
00:10:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
you've got right side.
00:10:34
Nick Britten
Yeah, he turned his man, he rolled him, and he was the right he was the wrong side of him, and he was brought down. there's nothing soft about it It's a good penalty.
00:10:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fair enough. Terrible mistake by Chelsea to hand the ball back to Kane. ah to And a brilliant finish by Kane, by the way, I thought, for their third.
00:10:50
Nick Britten
Yeah, so did I.
00:10:50
Nick
Yeah.
00:10:51
Nick Britten
There was a bit of a sliding doors moment, wasn't there, with Cole Palmer, I felt, with his big toe being offside.
00:10:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:10:56
Nick Britten
It was a great goal.
00:10:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:10:57
Nick Britten
it it was If that goes in and is counted, there's a potentially different result out of that game.
00:10:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:11:03
Nick Britten
There we are.
00:11:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, but entertaining games, as Champions League always is entertaining.
00:11:04
Nick Britten
That's football.
00:11:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Two more games tonight. Nick, i'm going to come to you now. Nick Britton, going come to you now. ah We've predicted Man City against Napoli. Napoli are my favourites for the competition, by the way.
00:11:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think they're going to win it. ah So you're going to be here, lots of me saying Napoli all the way through the rest of the season and Newcastle Barcelona. So give us your predictions for Man City, Napoli and and Newcastle Barcelona.
00:11:36
Nick Britten
If Napoli are your favourites to win the Champions League, I want to know what you're smoking, mate.
00:11:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, wait a second. oh
00:11:42
Nick Britten
Literally, what planet are you on?
00:11:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
wait ah Well, top of Serie A, three wins out of three. Absolutely smashing it, smashing it under Antonio Conte.
00:11:50
Nick Britten
Mate, it's September. It's September. mean, look, I'm i'm used to it.
00:11:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
What's good? Yep.
00:11:56
Nick Britten
How many decades have I known you? I'm used to your rubbish football talk. But this this comes right up there. All right, Napoli won't win and they won't win tonight. Man City will win. There you Bye.
00:12:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
what's go
00:12:06
Nick Britten
What do you think scores now? Do I? Blimey.
00:12:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:12:08
Nick Britten
3-1. And
00:12:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
3-1. Okay. And here's a big one. Newcastle Barcelona.
00:12:15
Nick Britten
you'll probably try and change the rules so that you get points for Haaland scoring in your fantasy league team because that's what you're like. It doesn't count. It doesn't count.
00:12:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Well,
00:12:24
Nick Britten
you You won't score tonight, will you? then you'll score five on Saturday.
00:12:26
Nick
Mm-hmm.
00:12:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
it it doesn't count in enough. No, yeah exactly. Exactly. And you had chance as captain. Right. Newcastle Barcelona in it.
00:12:32
Nick Britten
I wish I could afford him. I did try and buy him two weeks ago, but... the only thing the only thing i could trade The only thing I could trade was Liam Dillap. So there was a £10 million pound deficit.
00:12:43
Nick Britten
I had to go out and try and find £10 million from someone.
00:12:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
next Nick, there's such a thing as a wild card. Anyway, Newcastle v Barcelona.
00:12:48
Nick Britten
Yeah, I've no idea. I've never played this before. I don't even know what i'm doing. I've never played Fantasy. I don't know what I'm doing.
00:12:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Newcastle v Barcelona.
00:12:55
Nick Britten
lost
00:12:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Come on, come on, come on. Get off the fence.
00:12:56
Nick Britten
This is why would have got that.
00:12:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Newcastle v Barcelona.
00:12:57
Nick Britten
No, no, this is important. When I got back from from America where I picked my team because you were giving me grief to get a team together, I only i only returned to find that eight of the my 11 were all injured. So, like, i didn't get any points for about the first three weeks.
00:13:10
Nick Britten
So, you know, there we are. ah Right, Newcastle, Barcelona. You know me, Ken. You know me. I don't like betting against Newcastle. I think Newcastle at St James' are such a good side.
00:13:20
Nick Britten
I was really impressed with Volta Marder's debut at the weekend.
00:13:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank
00:13:24
Nick Britten
I think with the packs and James' it's going to be a massive atmosphere. I know Geordie's, because obviously I've got a lot of links to the club and to the place, who have been on the lash since 11 o'clock this morning. It's going to be terrific.
00:13:35
Nick Britten
It's going to be terrific up there. And I'd like to think that that will that will have an effect. I think ah the Mal not playing is going to be massive for Barcelona.
00:13:47
Nick Britten
ah Something in my bones tell me this is going to end in a draw. I think Newcastle can get something out of game.
00:13:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the score?
00:13:54
Nick Britten
One each.
00:13:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
One each. Just to let you know, by the way, both me and Nick Bird have got but Man City Napoli as a draw. for Nick. 2-2 for me.
00:14:04
Nick Britten
Uh-huh.
00:14:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
And... Well...
00:14:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:14:07
Nick Britten
three three 3-3. Whoa, me.
00:14:10
Nick Britten
Slivy.
00:14:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
well
00:14:11
Nick
He stole Tutu from me.
00:14:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think we know Nick Gerd is pretty good at this prediction game. ah
00:14:16
Nick Britten
Yeah, nice.
00:14:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Pretty good at it. ah so But he's got Barcelona winning 3-1. I've got Newcastle winning 2-1, by the way.
00:14:23
Nick Britten
ah okay Oh, okay.
00:14:23
Nick Britten
Well, the draw's probably about right in the middle there. Yeah, listen, ah you're right. I mean, look. Man City is just so... You've got no idea what's going to happen with Man City, do
00:14:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:14:32
Nick
Huh.
00:14:32
Nick Britten
I mean, even in like the microcosm of the Manchester derby the other day, they were in parts brilliant, in parts very ordinary. And they played this season. have been times have been absolutely fantastic and times have been rubbish.
00:14:44
Nick Britten
You're just not quite sure which Man City is going to turn up.
00:14:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
inconsistent.
00:14:47
Nick Britten
Yeah.
00:14:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm just, my only regret is that I'm not going to be on the podcast tomorrow to celebrate the ah demolition, really, of Man City by Napoli. and But what reminds me, next time I'm on. Now, as we know,
00:15:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
In football, it pays to get your team selection, right?
00:15:04
Nick Britten
I'll phone you tomorrow.
00:15:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you mind and you mind not in
00:15:06
Nick Britten
I'll phone you tomorrow.

Right, part two of this, and we're going to talk about West Ham. West Ham, just to remind you, um obviously are under a bit of a cloud the moment, so is their manager, Graham Potter.
00:15:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
There was a fans group, no confidence letter issued a few days ago. The West Ham owners have made a statement. They've talked about it's not acceptable.
00:16:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
they don't or They accept the fact the team is underperforming. They're focusing on the future. They talk about the financial situation. the stadium and match day experience is going to get improved.
00:16:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's been investment in infrastructure and facilities. They're going to have better dialogue with fans. But they're still losing all the games. So what do you make of the response from the West Ham board, from Karen Brady and David Sullivan?
00:16:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you think that is going to provide West Ham faithful any kind of comfort? Nick Britton, I'm coming to you first.
00:16:45
Nick Britten
You first. No. In a word? No, it won't, because there's nothing in there that actually is is is concrete. It's just a bit, yeah, we know it's a bit rubbish, but we'll make it better.
00:16:58
Nick Britten
Thanks. Thanks for coming. And by the way, it's not a statement. I wrote a dissertation which was less less words than this. It goes on forever.
00:17:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
It does. It
00:17:06
Nick Britten
It goes on forever. I mean, it's it's a massive letter.
00:17:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
should have been a podcast.
00:17:10
Nick Britten
yeah.
00:17:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
They could have made a podcast series out of it, couldn't they?
00:17:10
Nick Britten
We could have... was say, I could have read that statement out. would It would take up the entire length of this podcast. It's massive. So yeah, its look, it acknowledges it. Fine, what are you going to do about it?
00:17:20
Nick Britten
It acknowledges the stadium that nobody likes. Yeah, fine, what you to do about it? It acknowledges that the team are doing rubbish. Yeah, but what are you going to do about it? just It just doesn't say it. is there's no There's no substantive kind of outcomes to any of it other than, yeah, we get you, fans, and we kind of agree with you.
00:17:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah,
00:17:37
Nick Britten
So keep coming, and we'll see how it goes.
00:17:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:17:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
but no ah no real answers. Nick Bird, how do you respond to that?
00:17:46
Nick
I mean, it's not really going to help doing all this off-pitch stuff when they're in the championship next year. like the The players are so poor. i think might have been my first podcast with GSPN. I was talking about how bad West Ham were and their lack of physicality in midfield, no runners.
00:18:06
Nick
And that was almost a year ago now.
00:18:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
right.
00:18:08
Nick
And they have the exact same issues. And I don't but don't think Graham Potter is necessarily helping them, but I don't think any manager is going to help too much to to the point where they'll comfortably avoid relegation.
00:18:23
Nick Britten
yeah I always worry. I always worry when owners of clubs come out and start saying, we've spent this ah ah this this amount of money over the last five years, £450 million pounds in the last three years.
00:18:37
Nick Britten
We've spent that. Well... and trying to justify, yeah, we've we've we've made improvements on the stadium. Yeah, we've done this. it It just feels like they're clutching at straws and trying to justify failure because that's ultimately what it is at the moment.
00:18:51
Nick Britten
And it will continue to be. The reality is, and Nick's kind of touched on this now, until they get things on the pitch that right, until they start winning games, until they look like they can pull themselves out of this relegation zone, which they don't look like doing at the moment,
00:19:06
Nick Britten
Nothing else matters. And supporters, for supporters, and and we're all football supporters, um you know, Nick and I support big clubs and and Ken, you know, and we all know that football supporters...
00:19:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Joe, don't you dare.
00:19:23
Nick Britten
only want one thing. They want a winning team on a pitch. And if they have a winning team on the pitch, they don't care what else is going on. They'll forgive anything else that's going on elsewhere in the club. But the minute you don't have a winning team on the pitch and you see the kind of downwards spiralled at West Ham or in, then I'm afraid all these kinds of statements and saying, yeah, we've done this and we've done that and be assured, yeah be reassured that we're going to do this. We can do that.
00:19:45
Nick Britten
It means nothing.

Manchester United Management Speculation

00:19:46
Nick Britten
It means it's empty words until something actually happens.
00:19:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
You're right. 90% of what's in that statement, the fans just don't care about, quite honestly. They only care about one thing. That's what's on the pitch. Interestingly, when I was doing that research on this, when Potter was appointed after Lepetegui's departure, who, by the way, had a better record than Potter, West Ham were talking about a 10-year Potter reign.
00:20:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
A 10-year. Imagine 10 years. Where will he be after 10 years of Potter?
00:20:17
Nick Britten
He ain't getting 10 months. Never mind 10 years. He'd be lucky to get 10 million minutes the way they're playing at a moment.
00:20:20
Nick
Oh.
00:20:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Interesting, by the way, just on a completely different subject. i and I don't know how much truth there is in this, but I've got a feeling there is truth in it. I understand Amorim, Ruben Amorim Manchester United, is due £16 million pounds if he is sacked within the first 12 months of his reign, which ends at the start of November.
00:20:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
What is the betting that Ruben Amorim is sacked three days after the end of his first year finishes?
00:20:53
Nick Britten
That's very interesting. That's very interesting. I think if if that is the case, to look, it might be it might be something that's just delaying the what what what feels right now to be the inevitable. Presumably, if he is sacked though, he'll still need to be paid up the rest of his contract. So are you suggesting that that it's the rest of his contract plus £16 million, pounds or are you suggesting that that £16 million pounds is is part of his overall contract payment? Because if they get rid of him, they'll have to pay his contract off anyway.
00:21:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
You're right, but I'm i'm suggesting it's an ah it's an additional 16 million which he's written into his contract. That is what he's been talked about. Don't know if it's true or not. If it is true, ah very interesting. If it isn't true, I'm really sorry, Ruben, and ah for passing passing something around that's not true.
00:21:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, just...
00:21:37
Nick Britten
I think we'll find out, won't we? We'll find out.
00:21:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, we certainly will. Right. Final thing on the West Ham thing, next five games. I'm going to give you the next five games. I want you to tell me what, the not the result, but where whether West Ham are going to get any points from them.
00:21:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay. Palace at home at the weekend. ah Let's go. ah Nick Bird first, then Nick Britton on each of these.
00:21:55
Nick
None.
00:21:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nick Bird.
00:21:58
Nick
No points.
00:22:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nick.
00:22:00
Nick
the
00:22:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay.
00:22:01
Nick
They'll lose.
00:22:02
Nick Britten
Yeah, i I think so. i think so. I'll go for Palace.
00:22:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, so no points there. Everton away. Nick Bird.
00:22:10
Nick
They'll lose.
00:22:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nick Britton.
00:22:13
Nick Britten
No points.
00:22:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Arsenal away. Nick Bird. Oh, well, what silly question. aye What do you reckon?
00:22:20
Nick
they they like to they like to turn up when they come to the Emirates but I'll say they'll lose we're
00:22:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, Nick Britton.
00:22:27
Nick Britten
Three points. Just to annoy Nick.
00:22:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
You don't mean that. You don't mean that.
00:22:32
Nick Britten
I don't know. They've got get some points somewhere along the way. It would be a very Arsenal thing.
00:22:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, that's the point.
00:22:36
Nick Britten
It would be a very Arsenal thing to do, by the way.
00:22:37
Nick
one of Potter's only wins
00:22:38
Nick Britten
It would be a very Arsenal thing to do to suddenly drop points West Ham, wouldn't it?
00:22:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
1-1 or something.
00:22:42
Nick
one of pa's only wins
00:22:43
Nick Britten
Yeah. Yeah, and and and and Nick's right. West Ham don't turn up very many places, but they'd like to turn up at Arsenal.
00:22:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
So what going for?
00:22:49
Nick Britten
So, I'm going for draw.
00:22:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
draw. So they've got one point for that. Okay.
00:22:53
Nick Britten
can't believe I'm saying this. I can't believe I'm saying this.
00:22:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Here's the big one. Here's the big one. Brentford at home. West Ham v Brentford. Nick Bird.
00:23:04
Nick
go with Draw just to give them something.
00:23:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay. Nick?
00:23:08
Nick Britten
Well, I've already given them something. Actually, you know, Brentford aren't doing as badly as as we, you on and I, thought they might do at the start of the season when we tip them for relegation.
00:23:12
Nick
No.
00:23:17
Nick Britten
They actually look like they've kind of got over the departure of all their best players and their manager and they're settling into some kind of rhythm. and Yeah, i i can... Yeah, I think draw probably.
00:23:29
Nick Britten
So I'll probably, on that basis, I'll give Arsenal a win and give Brentford a point and West Ham a point each.
00:23:36
Nick Britten
So in answer to your question, it's kind of one point in the next five games, isn't it?
00:23:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay.
00:23:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
if well
00:23:40
Nick Britten
That's what we're looking at.
00:23:40
Nick Britten
at Oh, oh, right.
00:23:40
Nick
yeah
00:23:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
well And then you've got Leeds away. Nick Bird.
00:23:44
Nick Britten
oh well there's there's there's Yeah, go on, Nick, you go first.
00:23:49
Nick
I will go a midweek game I'm just looking ah say they'll lose so
00:23:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Nick Britton?
00:23:58
Nick Britten
No, I don't think they will. I don't think they will because Leeds have zero people who can score goals. And this is the sort of game where West Ham can get something out of.
00:24:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, West Ham, I've got Berwyn. I mean, this this is that's what it might come down to.
00:24:11
Nick
Yeah.
00:24:11
Nick Britten
Well, they've Pacitar as well. He can score goals.
00:24:13
Nick Britten
But Bowen and Pacitar are better than anything Leeds have got. Leeds have got Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
00:24:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:19
Nick Britten
So, you know. No, I think West Ham get a point out of that.
00:24:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, so between us,
00:24:24
Nick Britten
0-0 written all over it. That game's got 0-0 written all over it, hasn't it?
00:24:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's got nil-nil written on over it. So of the next five games, according to Nick Bird, West Ham are getting one out those 15 points. And Nick Britton thinks they're getting two out of those 15 points.

Ad Read and Liverpool's Late Goals Debate

00:24:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Watch him go and get 15 out of those 15. Right. right okay on
00:24:44
Nick Britten
almost as crazy as your Napoli is going to win the Champions League.

00:25:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, we're going to wrap things up. um We're going to wrap things up just by coming back to Liverpool. I really want to know whether you think this habit they have of scoring the last minute is a sign of strength or a sign of weakness.
00:25:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nick Bird.
00:25:49
Nick
I think for now it's a sign of strength.
00:25:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bird.
00:25:52
Nick
If it continues, ah i think it will become a sign of weakness, but they're more likely to sort this out and get games done earlier, I think. And as the team begins to gel a bit more, I think we're seeing it a little bit already.
00:26:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:26:07
Nick
But at the moment, a sign of strength. If it continues, especially against considerably worse teams like we saw against Burnley, then very much a sign of weakness because it will mentally wear them down. And we saw it, or I saw it with Arsenal in 22-23. We kept winning games late and eventually just burnt out. And it it will take a mental toll on them if it keeps happening.
00:26:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Does this imply that Liverpool have got you a huge strength up front, which they do, and it's only getting stronger, but does it imply actually they've got some really some real issues in in on the defensive side of the coin, if you like?
00:26:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
They do seem to have this kind of frailty. They're obviously trying to get Gahey. Yeah. is it is Is it really just indicative of actually it's the attacking side of the Liverpool keeps getting the defence out trouble, but that is only going to... It can't last forever.
00:27:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nick Britton, discuss.
00:27:09
Nick Britten
and no No, don't think so. no yeah i think i think if you the the bad news for liverpo sorry the bad news for Arsenal and the bad news for Manchester City is if there's ever a right time to play Liverpool, it was now.
00:27:22
Nick Britten
Because they've signed all these players and they've shoved them in the team. And I think part of the issue that we saw earlier on in the season is that these new players were getting up to speed with the Premier League, getting up to speed with Liverpool.
00:27:34
Nick Britten
And therefore, they look slightly vulnerable. But game by game by game, they're starting to look better. And they're suddenly stopping conceding goals. I thought Florian Verts had his best game in a Liverpool shirt last night.
00:27:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's good.
00:27:44
Nick Britten
And I think they will only get better. I think they will only get better from here on in. So the opportunity for other teams to take points off them is, I wouldn't say that the door is slamming shut, but it's it's it's it's getting closed.
00:27:58
Nick Britten
And that opportunity has been missed because they look vulnerable but against Bournemouth, certainly. ah But they won the game. They look vulnerable against Newcastle, but won the game. They look vulnerable um in other games. and But they're looking better now. They're starting to not look vulnerable.
00:28:14
Nick Britten
And although they let in two goals last night, one was a bit of a deflection. and And that was the second goal. And the first goal, I can't even remember what it was like.
00:28:24
Nick Britten
remember what like. Anyway, bye-bye. My point this. Look.
00:28:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
good finish it's good finish we went through guys legs but it was good finish by correct
00:28:28
Nick Britten
but
00:28:31
Nick Britten
Yeah. Oh, that's right. Yes, yes, yes. You're absolutely right. Yeah, because he's right in the stroke half-time, isn't But what will be key, though, saying all of this, what will be key is they don't, in my opinion, have nearly as good a depth of squad as Arsenal do.
00:28:47
Nick Britten
And if if either Canate or even worse Van Dijk gets an injury between now and January, where they might be able to go out and strengthen, that's going to have a massive impact.
00:28:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
correct
00:29:00
Nick Britten
So I think they've got the best first 11 in the league, no problem. But they don't have the depth of squad that Arsenal have.
00:29:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, interesting. I think Arsenal are just a better defence than Liverpool. And I think from what I've seen so far, ultimately the defence is going to cost Liverpool eventually.
00:29:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
It might come against Everton, the weekend Everton, I think are quite an interesting team at the moment.
