Milos Kerkes' Performance and Personal Story

00:02:35
Speaker
I have to start with, thank you Milos Kirkis. What a game he had. Funny thing, right? We arrived, me and my mate who went to watch arrived um around half two at the ground.
00:02:53
Speaker
wanted to watch the warm-up. um And during the the crossing, right? They were doing the crosses. ah We went close to Keck, because I don't know if he heard me or not, right? But I did say him in Serbian language, right? Son, I want an assist from you, right? And now that that that was ridiculously funny, right? The next thing you see, he gets to, like, i I had tears in my eyes. I have them now as well. I just couldn't believe what happened.
00:03:22
Speaker
um ah What a game, what a game. I want to hear your thoughts. Jack, you're our guest today, so... Well, to be honest with you, on any other day, it could have and probably should have been about five

Bournemouth's Tactics Against City

00:03:38
Speaker
or six. I mean, let's face the facts here, a 2-1 scoreline to Bournemouth is very, very flattering on our end because we got outplayed in in every aspect of of the field. and and and every end of the park we just got outplayed did our own game and we were slow sluggish but ah I want to kind of stare away from the fact that we were bad and and more because Bournemouth were as good as we were Paul I mean you guys were were unbelievable so well drilled and and just really tidy in every every aspect of the park in our preview I kind of highlighted that
00:04:15
Speaker
this game is going to be won or lost out wide. I feel like it's going to have little to do centrally. and And I feel like I was more correct in that because like you mentioned, Milos Kerkes, I mean, what a player that was quite possibly the best performance I've seen from a full back in the Premier League against my team anyway, 100%. I've not seen a full back dominators like that and in a very long time and and not just ah going forward attacking wise, but in every aspect of play, and tracking back defensively. Phil Foden had a shocking game, but let's let's face it, he was he was completely locked up by Milos Kerkes, and he was just as good going forward as he was tracking back defensively. I feel like there were a lot of key points from that game, key takeaways from City's point of view, that we looked to improve on, that we were really poor, but at the end of the day, you guys were absolutely fantastically efficient. I feel like that the
00:05:10
Speaker
You were really good in every aspect of the game, apart from in front of that. I feel like you wasted a lot of chances and and you weren't as clinical as you should be, which is why on another day, you probably could have been five or six now. Yeah, yeah. And it wouldn't be real, would it not? No, I mean, I would agree with everything that Jack said, really. I think the a lot of the pundit a lot of the pundit views and the pundit comments were more focusing on City having a poor game as opposed to us actually having a good game, which is exactly what happened when we failed Arsenal a couple of weeks ago as well.
00:05:40
Speaker
um Every single year, every single time we've played City, we've done the same thing apart from last year, which was we sat back and we just invited the attack on over and over again. And this was the first time where we've gone out straight away and just taken the game to City. And I think that's what really helped us as well. And I completely agree with you, Jack, that the game was won and lost in the wide areas. Kyle Walker, who I've rated for a really long time,
00:06:04
Speaker
had probably one of the worst individual performances I've ever seen. He was dreadful. And that wasn't even just like him having a bad game. It was Kerkes and Semenyo who just ran in ragged all game. The the people um where we sat, obviously we love Semenyo to pieces, but I've never seen anything like it. It was like a man possessed that one moment in the first half where he just ran from our edge of the box to the edge of your box. And I think Walker, Koficic and maybe Foden ended up on the floor.
00:06:32
Speaker
but it was just it was just a super super performance and yeah I'm just over the moon generally over the moon it's been a long time coming and I did say I i hope Luke mentioned it I said I was like this year's the year we finally get a point off of you I wasn't expecting three but I was like this year's gonna be the year we finally get a point so but yeah I completely agree with everything mean you said Jack.
00:06:54
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, I think in our preview, I think it was Jules who told me that we actually never lost the Premier League fixture to Bournemouth in our history. And I looked at him straight in the face and I said, that does not fill me with any confidence at all. I'm just as worried going into this game now because this is obviously a completely different Bournemouth team.

Iraola's Management and Bournemouth's Strong Showings

00:07:14
Speaker
In fact, we had a an episode a few weeks ago where we were talking about a future without Pep and and we were bringing out some of our potential shooters for the table.
00:07:24
Speaker
and my outside shout was Iriola because I think he's just fantastic. I've been watching Bournemouth quite closely for the past season and and a half now and I just think he's he's he's such a good manager and really underrated and and it was not a surprise to me at all that that you played us off the part because this isn't just a fluke, you did it to Arsenal a couple of week weekends ago um and you got a draw against Villa as well. Taking seven points off those three teams in the space of a couple of weeks, it's ridiculous and that's really after and not only areola but the players and you can tell that they're really behind him i mean you mentioned semeno i can't even talk about him as a surprise player anymore for me because i've been watching semeno for a for a season or two now and he's just unbelievable every single time i watch him
00:08:11
Speaker
He's probably one of the best players I've ever seen carrying a ball. and when one When he gets that ball at his feet and he picks up a bit of pace behind it, wow, he just, I think it was at the game against Luton last year, that mental score. um yeah your gra yeah three yeah or game He was

Kyle Walker's Challenges and Bournemouth's Exploitation

00:08:29
Speaker
unbelievable. It was just, it was a ridiculous game to watch and and he was fantastic at that game. but You mentioned there, Dom, about Kyle Walker.
00:08:37
Speaker
That's not just a one-off game anymore. He is like that week in, week out for us. It's really disappointing because it's kind of putting a a little bit of a tarnish on the legacy that he's built up city over years. Out of the years, it's one of the greatest right-backs in the Premier League, but the last season and a half, he's just been way off it. And and in fairness to him, he hasn't played a game or trained for about 19 days now since an international game with England. so He was coming back right into the deep end, but but listen, that you could see that Bournemouth were quite clearly targeting that right-hand side. Semenyo and Milos Kirk has doubling up at times, tripling up, and it worked. So you you had a game plan, you stuck to it. Yeah.
00:09:18
Speaker
I agree. I will just, like, um going back to the targeting, you probably noticed, like, the both of you as well, goal kicks, every single goal kick was aimed. Semenyo was on Walker every single time. It was to flick on to Evgenyev. If he just stayed onside, Evgenyev said, there are three or four times where he would have been slipped in from that header, but... Yeah, um yeah you're absolutely right and I do. Sorry, you carry on. So I was just going to say that absolutely that was working for you. It was Route 1 stuff and it was working for you and and the one time that we tried it where Edison, out of any keep in the world, is probably best equipped to be able to do that to Harland, who's the st striker in world football, who's probably best equipped to receive it. We only tried it like once and the once that we did try it, it worked and I'm just thinking,
00:09:58
Speaker
Okay, our usual style of football isn't working against Bournemouth. Why don't we go back to that re-won stuff? We tried it once, it worked. Bournemouth are clearly doing it. They're getting great success out of it. So I feel like a lot of that defeat was on pep. I was disappointed, but hands up at the end of the day. You guys were fantastic.
00:10:16
Speaker
Yeah, do you think do do jack think that Walker's problem is maybe the age? He's now 34, usually players after 32 I think. They become a bit slower, they become a bit... just you know and not that crime anymore I think that can definitely be attributed and and that was what myself and a lot of the city lads were worried about the start of this season maybe last season as well but if you watch the games he's no slower he's still just as quick but his mind isn't just there he's defensive decision making he's just
00:10:53
Speaker
a bit, I mean it's a bit stupid really, he doesn't know when to go and when to stop and when he's defending one-on-one, that's when he gets exposed a little bit. When he's in a foot race with a player, I still don't really have that many doubts. I mean we've seen it a couple of weekends ago against Wolves, he did get beaten for pace by Adama Traore but come on it's Adama Traore.
00:11:15
Speaker
Anyone else? It's because of the baby oil, probably. Yeah, exactly. Anyone else he's still got the better of. But I feel like, because he's had so many issues off the pitch at the moment in the last, like, season and a half, his head just must be all over the gaff. But any other other player, I'd probably excuse that, but he's our captain and he's supposed to be leading by example. And it's a bit poor from him. His performance just hasn't been good enough this season.
00:11:40
Speaker
He might just need to pick up the games and and I'm sure he'll be fine. and Right, time for a quick ad break and we'll be back with lots of things to talk about.

Speaker
the Global Sports Podcast Network. Right, we are back to talk more about Wonderful game that we had over the weekend. First ever win against City in Vitality. um The crowds, the stands, everything was so, so euphoric and I think it was a good choice for me um that I decided to to be in the North stand. Oh, my stand thing? Yeah, so I was in block 13. Okay, I'm in block 8.
00:13:34
Speaker
I was in block 13 this weekend. I was looking at the forecast, the weather forecast. I was thinking, was it going to rain or not? And it was a bit drizzling in the morning. And I was like, you know what? I'll just take the risk. And yeah, we managed to get the front row seats. So I was really like manifesting second half. We're going to score the goal. The players are going to come to me like you know to celebrate. And that's it. That's it. I got to get the most of it. And unfortunately, yeah, they went to your side, Dom, when we scored the second one.
00:14:03
Speaker
ah But again, what an experience, what a game. um Funny thing, I could see when when Tav hit the post, right, I was watching obviously the match highlights and you could see me behind the goal when Tav hit the post, I jumped, put the hands on my head, I was like, come on, mate. But honestly, unbelievable game. um As you guys mentioned earlier, ah last three games,
00:14:30
Speaker
um Do you remember, Dom, when we were doing our predictions for the next three games before the Arsenal? and I think I said i'd ah I'd be happy with four points from those three games, right? I said I'd be happy with two. Yeah. you said I remember you said you'd be happy with two. I said I'd be happy with four. and We got seven from the top three teams.
00:14:50
Speaker
The question is, how far can we go? And obviously now, next few games, they're a bit easier, right? We've got Brent for the Wade and Brighton at home, Brighton with only one point above us.
00:15:03
Speaker
um it's This is now where we where we actually need to try and continue that run and the no not to waste any any any points. And again, I'll say from these two games, following games, I'll be happy with four points.
00:15:18
Speaker
um But no, incredible games, incredible wins. We're we're just flying. We're just flying. like Like all the players are on Red Bull. We're just flying. I'd be interested actually um to hear, ah Jack, from watching the game on Saturday.
00:15:37
Speaker
And there's a lot of murmurs, a lot of um potential optimism from Bournemouth fans saying maybe this season European football might actually be a tangible

Bournemouth's European Aspirations

00:15:46
Speaker
target. Maybe not Europa League, but Conference League. I mean, I'll bite your hand off for Conference League to be honest with you. How would you, from watching that game, how would you rank our chances potentially for the rest of the season? To be honest with you, my my opinions of of how well you're going to do this season aren't even any different based on the game at the weekend. I've always thought you were going to do well.
00:16:06
Speaker
Because, I mean, put it this way, in that preview, people were asking me what my thoughts are of going to Bournemouth this weekend to the Vitality Stadium. I said, I absolutely hate the thought of going down to Bournemouth to the Vitality Stadium. I think it was Jules you mentioned after the back of a lost at Spurs, it's nice to maybe go to Bournemouth and have a little bit of a more easy game. I said, not a chance. It's probably the last place I'd want to go after a loss at Spurs is back down south to Bournemouth.
00:16:35
Speaker
because the Vitality Stadium, am I right in saying it's dist still the smallest capacity stadium in the league? It's still 11,307 seats at the moment. It's so small, the pitch is so so like close to the stands and it's so cauldron. It's absolutely horrendous to go. You could hear it on the TV, they were making more noise than Anfield, which in fairness is a library. Sorry, Tony. Agree, agree, agree.
00:17:02
Speaker
But it's a cauldron. That few fans in the stadium, but that much noise, it's a horrible place to go. Even the last few seasons when we've won every single game, apparently. um I still can't remember watching a Bournemouth game and going, this is an easy one. maybe Maybe the sixth one last season, but that was a hard round. Yeah, but remember it's vitality. It was better than 1-0 and we were better.
00:17:22
Speaker
It's always a difficult game to play. But based on what I've seen from you guys over the last season or two, it's probably what I think of you and how you're going to do this year. I think you're going to absolutely be fine. I think you're finishing the top half a table. I think that's particularly controversial. If you look at where Nottingham Forest are in the league, I think they're like third or fourth at the moment. And I genuinely think hand on heart you guys are much better than that.
00:17:48
Speaker
I think you're better drilled. I think maybe the difference in player quality might be a little bit different, but I still think if you go player for player, you're you're right up there. But I think the main difference, the key the key difference is is the manager. I'm such a big fan of him, he's a very old man. And and you can you can clearly see that this season more than any other season in the past,
00:18:10
Speaker
not only are there all the players behind it, but all the fans are as well. So I feel like it's going to be, if nothing else, a really fun season for Bournemouth because you've already taken three points off Arsenal, you've already taken three points off Manchester City, you've already taken a point off Villa. They're some of the hardest games you can play in the season already out of the way. So for you to go in, Vic, you mentioned your net run of fixtures now against Bournemouth and Brentford.
00:18:35
Speaker
if you were to go into those games off the back of maybe a couple of draws and a loss, they're looking like really tough fixtures. But now you're probably looking at those games going, well, we took three points off Arsenal and City. Why can't we go and get three points off Brentford and stuff like that? So I think that that confidence is huge going into it. And and it's just going to be a lot of momentum building up. So if you can keep that momentum, there's no reason why you can't get European football this season.

Iraola's Player Positioning and Ryan Christie's Transformation

00:19:01
Speaker
ah We did some, actually, predictions. Don, what was your prediction before the the the beginning of the season? What did you say? I said 11th, I think. 11th. Do you remember what I said?
00:19:14
Speaker
You said like seventh, didn't you? I said eighth. It's the position that we currently sit in. um I said eighth because with the eighth position, we we might with some luck be able to get into the conference and play the qualifiers for the conference league. Now, maybe this is I said for for another year or two. um And I always like to go back with how things look like now.
00:19:38
Speaker
If last season, after that really bad run in the beginning, if we didn't beat Burnley when we were two we were one nil down and then we turned ah the score around in the second half, if we didn't beat Burnley last season, would I stay? This is this is this the question I like to ask myself you know and and and other people, because I think that from that game, things definitely started working. and um Some of the things that Iraola did, which at the beginning I thought there were they were ridiculous, they were stupid, drive trying trying to use some players in the positions that they never played before, ah now we we seem to see um the best of those players right in in completely different positions. And um I'm going to name those players um
00:20:33
Speaker
soon. But before that, we need to go for another quick ad break and we'll be back. I know intensity, right? Every club, every day. The Global Sports Podcast Network. Speaker
sports podcast network why we are back another few minutes with you their listeners Right. um Going back to some things that I thought that were ridiculous at the beginning of the season, not the beginning of the last season, we all took over, right? The biggest change, I'll go with, I'll start with Ryan Christie. Ryan Christie, who signed as a winger, ah right midfielder, played in that position since like, until, until we all took over, right? And then we all tried him on CDM. we we We don't have better CDM at the moment in the team.
00:22:24
Speaker
The way his working rate it is on the pitch and the way he plays with the ball, um carries the ball out as well. The only player, now, okay, this might sound funny because we we we are with the with the city, with the colleague from city, but the only player that I've seen that can carry the ball that that long is Kovacic as a midfielder, box-to-box player.
00:22:48
Speaker
And there was a game that I watched, um I think it was last season when when it was ah in Vitality game when we lost 1-0 to City, when Kovacic literally took the ball from from the from from the box right from the box line.
00:23:03
Speaker
no one No one managed to take the ball off him. He was just going like left, right, left, right, zigzags, got all the way to the 16-yard box. And I think that that that attack ended with a corner. But Christie as a CDM now, I wouldn't want anyone else to be honest. um With Tyler Adams being back from the injury, he really looked good onto the pitch. I'm not going to lie.
00:23:28
Speaker
And um obviously, Iraola did swap him for Christie because Adams is more defensive. So once we we were in the lead, he wanted to try and then save as much as he can. That result, ah which obviously ended up in bringing on another center back, Huisen, and tried to play with five in the back. um One of the disappointments from the subs, I think Dom, you will agree with me, it's probably the worst edition that we've seen so far was Enes Unao.

Nathan Ake's Return to Bournemouth

00:24:01
Speaker
Yeah, he was, he looked a bit lost out there, didn't he? There are a few moments where he would trap the ball really well and then he'd be swarmed by three or four players and he just didn't really know how to handle it. I think on the flip side of that, he didn't help him because I thought Evan Ilston had one of his best games for us on Saturday as well. And I know
00:24:21
Speaker
Vic, you know this, and Jaco, I sort of say, Nathan Aque is my favourite ball and player ever. I love the guy to pieces. I said when we signed him alone in 2016 that he'll go on to win everything he has. And i I knew it was bad when even he looked a little bit shaky.
00:24:38
Speaker
i said to um I said to the people sitting around me who love him, I was like, okay, he looks nervous here. You're not used to seeing that. Well, I'm not used to seeing that anyway. And um yeah, I think obviously he came off, but yeah, I agree with you. ah imagine Imagine how they feel, right? Those players that played for Bournemouth before, how yeah how they feel coming back to the temple of football, right? And like Jack mentioned earlier, where where everything feels, everything is so close and everything feels scary. And it's just, you know, it's it's literally only a few yards away from between the the fans and the pitch. And the the atmosphere obviously great and everything. And maybe, you know,
00:25:20
Speaker
he He spent a couple of years in Beaumont and, you know, maybe I don't know. i wouldn't fail I wouldn't feel comfortable knowing that I played for this club and coming back here. And yes, the fans love me and he was a great player. And he did get the applause when he when he was subbed as well. um But it's I don't know. If I was Aki, I would come back to Beaumont. The only problem would be the only problem would be Who do you put on the bench? Because Zabani and Sinesia are doing a great job in defence at the moment. I suppose one thing you could look at is if we lose Kerkes, maybe Akic. Don't say that. We probably will, right? But 70 million for him, please. At the start of the season when we were talking about our dream transfers,
00:26:10
Speaker
myself and Jules both were eyeing up Kirk has to come in before the season that he's had already. So I mean, I love a little lot of cheeky bit on. Yeah, yeah okay absolutely no chance. We absolutely love him since he signed.
00:26:26
Speaker
for us. He's been absolutely magnificent. we've We've not heard anyone, we've not listened to anyone try and tell us that he was never a goodbye from Bournemouth, even when you know it was 40 million from a relegation team, not a chance. He's been fantastic since he's come in. The games that he's played this season, he's just coming back from injury, so he's kind of been rushed back due to our little crisis of injuries that were going on here.
00:26:49
Speaker
so to me to watch him have like a poor game by his standards wasn't much of a surprise because half of that back line got rushed in and but yeah he did have a pretty poor game but it was nice to see him get the standard ovation and it and it hurts me to to hear that you know Ines Unal is not as highly rated at Bournemouth because he used to play for City so so but that's kind of devastating.
00:27:12
Speaker
He's I do actually really rated. I think he he's a good player, but he just he yeah got had a couple of Good games towards the back end of last season where he maybe got it. Was it like two goals in a game? what it goals it the Yeah and He missed the first part of the season because he was injured. He looks look great. i mean It was always going to be a big ask, losing Dominic Solanke and trying to replace the impact that he's had. and But I feel like he's he's going to keep on keeping on, basically. I feel like he's going to get into his stride and now i have an iilson and and and kind of play into his own. I think we did a good deal because we, well, we paid for Solanke from Liverpool, 20 million. We sold him 65, then we got to Vannuson for around 40 million. So that kind of bounced out. And um the thing is now, yeah, as as we mentioned,
00:28:02
Speaker
the The question is the matter of time when when Kirk is he's gonna be going to a bigger club? Semenya as well. There are already some rumors about Semenya in 40 million But I think he he's worth maybe a bit more than 40 million. Maybe around 50 we could get for him, especially in this market we de hes Anyway, we would make money because we paid him what done was it on not 79 million. I just haven't I think upset Yeah something like that but under 10 million anyway so we would we would we would make good money on on that as well but um Antoine please stay another couple of years right um let us see at least some European football right and then you can leave give us the best of you as you already are doing and then AKA can come back

And then Akki come back. Yeah, right. And then Smithy will probably retire, so we're going to need another ride back. ah But that's something to talk about in in in the future. Right. We haven't got much time left, so just quickly want to ask you guys your opinions um about who who who was your man of the match um and um and why.

Jack off to you. Yeah, well, I feel, did it get awarded officially to Semenyal? No, Cook got it. Cook got the Man of the Match award. The fan one, yeah. Ah, right. Was it equal or Smith who missed the open goal? Smith. Oh, Smith, yeah, I thought so. That was poor. I know it was a tough shot, but you should be scoring that.

um Yeah, the the match award from the stadium in the stadium was Cook. um But then, yeah, you're looking at at other websites and everything. Overall, it was Simenio. I feel like Simenio going forward was the most dangerous attacker on the pitch. I mean, he he looked to kind of bully our bat line. And like I said, at the start of the episode, he is genuinely one of the best players I've seen driving the ball forwards. But for me, man in the match has to be Kirk Hesse. To do what he did that game against the Premier League champions at 20 years old, still can't believe he's 20 by the way. um And even without the two assists, which he did get, he was fantastic. But I mean, to just skip past the players and whip that, and they were good deliveries as well. and I was disappointed with Phil Foden for the first goal. I thought that was lazy defending, but I mean, all the same, it's it's a lot of desire there from Kirkez. And it's nearly a carbon copy for the second going down the other end. So Kirkez for me has got to be the one of the match.

i would I would agree, I'd have to agree, especially to assist and then that block as well in the first half. you was think i think well From what I've seen, the three tackles that he had, all all three were successful, two in the first half and and one in the second half, but that like sliding tackle which ah we were when he blocked Bernardo Silva shot in the first half, we were there, we were in front, what a tackle like water tackle i just couldn't believe ah but yeah i i straight away i said kirk is and then when the announcer in the stadium said louis kirk i just looked at him myself what he was good but the heck is was the best right just give it to him just give it to him to assess like come on um but yeah um jack
