All right. Welcome, welcome, welcome. So we are Chocolate with a Side of Medicine, and this is our first podcast. I'm excited. With me, I have the Chocolate MDs. I am Amy Jo MD. We'll get to that later. And we are a collection of Black Girl Magical Doctors from all parts of the United States, but
00:00:40
Speaker
trained together in Chicago, Illinois at the county hospital and have remained friends and have a common love for our patients, patient care, even if we spread out throughout the world to do medicine. And so we are going to be getting together.
00:00:57
Speaker
talking about lots of things, medicine with our own perspectives, our own angles, with a little humor and a little magical blackness here and there. And we hope that you enjoy this podcast. Let me get into some introductions.

Meet the Hosts

00:01:11
Speaker
Okay. So first person up is going to be Dr. Sunshine.
00:01:15
Speaker
Hi everybody, I'm Dr. Sunshine, appropriately named because I'm probably the most naturally upbeat doctor in this entire group. And I'm upbeat before coffee, after coffee, after a 24 hour shift, doesn't matter how you slice it. That's just how I roll. I'm originally from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, quick shout out to the 954 and all my family in Fort Lauderdale and Miami.
00:01:39
Speaker
After being born and raised in Florida, I made one of the best decisions of my life, which is go to college at Howard University in Washington DC, HU, you know, in addition to that, the timeframe between med school and where we are today.
00:01:56
Speaker
in my life i basically lived in the caribbean for about two years new york city chicago where i met these wonderful ladies of course and then now i am a practicing and licensed physician in california i've lived a lot of places seen a lot of things and i'm here to basically share my knowledge with you guys with these lovely ladies i'm next you guys are gonna hear from doctor no no
00:02:21
Speaker
Hey, everybody. I'm super excited to have this opportunity to join this podcast with three wonderful ladies who I can definitely say are part of my family now. It's been a long road coming from Michigan to doing med school and residency and now working as an attending in the city that I have grown to love Chicago.
00:02:44
Speaker
So we have a lot of things planned for you in the upcoming months with our podcast and we hope that all the info you'll find relevant and very useful that you can apply to your everyday lives and hopefully we can bring a little bit of humor and sunshine to your day. I'll let you tune in and listen. So without further ado, I'd like to introduce Dr. Chris. I'm Dr. Chris. I'm just going to tell you a little bit about me. I am originally from New York.
00:03:14
Speaker
Lived in Queens, New York most of my life. I am a first-generation Haitian American. I enjoy spending time with my family, cooking Haitian cuisine, and I do like some kalpa music. I have always been passionate about healthcare, which prompted me to get my master's in public health with a concentration in community medicine. I went to medical school in the Cayman Islands.
00:03:40
Speaker
And then got into residency in Chicago where I met these wonderful ladies. And now I'm currently practicing in North Carolina. So next you will be hearing from Amy Jo MD.
00:03:58
Speaker
All right, guys, so I am Amy Jo MD, Chicago, born and raised, south side girl all day. I hail from Whitney Young, because that matters in Chicago, from Whitney Young. Shout out to the Dolphins, home of Michelle Obama, shameless plug.
00:04:18
Speaker
I went to University of Alabama where I played basketball, so Roll Tide, also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated. So I wear many hats and I represent many wonderful, beautiful women well. Board certified family medicine physician, now living in South Carolina practicing medicine.
00:04:37
Speaker
So I have a colorful background. I am a career changer. I worked in corporate America for years before I went back to medical school and now find myself as a doctor. So I guess out of these four young women, I am the true OG around here because I've done a few things before I got here.
00:04:58
Speaker
But I cannot wait to get with you guys and talk medicine with some unique spans and a little bit of humor and normalize things in medicine that I really want people at home to feel like, oh man, I heard it over here. So it's really normal. So I hope that, you know, you learn something along the way that would make you laugh, that we give you something that you can take home to your families and friends.
00:05:24
Speaker
and everybody walk away a little bit healthier when this is all said and done.

Podcast Structure

00:05:28
Speaker
So looking forward to doing it. Okay, so next we've got just some expectations of what you can expect when you turn on chocolate with a side of medicine, what you can hear, what you may not hear, what you might hear on accident and all this kind of good things. So I'm going to turn it over to Dr. Sunshine.
00:05:47
Speaker
So the podcast and what you guys can expect from week to week is going to be loosely divided into three different segments. So the first segment of the show is basically going to be us discussing what's trending in medicine right now. Trending in medicine can be really broad. It can be everything from, for example, unfortunately, we just suffered the passing of Chadwick Boseman.
00:06:08
Speaker
from colon cancer at the age of 43. So there's been a lot of renewed interest in colon cancer and colon cancer screening. That would be an example of something trending in medicine that we would probably discuss based on a lot of the media attention that something may be getting. So first topic would be trending in medicine. The second portion of the show will be dedicated to our featured topic of the day.
00:06:32
Speaker
That'll basically be a topic that we decide for this episode is really important to emphasize. That could be anything from sexually transmitted infections, depression, anxiety. We'll have a featured topic every week where the four of us as a panel will discuss it. And we can basically give you guys some life lessons, take home points, basically things that you guys can remember to kind of improve your day-to-day life, similar to what you'd hear in the doctor's office. And then the third segment of the show
00:06:58
Speaker
would basically be letters from the audience. When I'm done, Dr. Dono is going to basically give you guys all the ways that you can contact us. And letters from the audience are basically going to be when you guys email us. You can email us your comments, your questions, some concerns. For example, if we missed out on discussing something in the trending medicine topic and you were like, hey, you didn't discuss
00:07:21
Speaker
the female rapper Cardi B and her advice about the WAP and my genital hygiene. I'd really like to hear you guys talk about that. And that is something that we can incorporate into the next episode, if that's something that you would like to hear more of. So we really value you guys' input. This podcast is basically, of course, us talking

Audience Interaction & Social Media

00:07:40
Speaker
amongst each other and giving you guys lessons. But it's also interactive. So we really want you guys to reach out through email and really ask us any questions that's on your mind. And every episode will feature probably about two or three of your questions.
00:07:51
Speaker
try to dissect it and answer your question as best as we can. Now I'll transition over to Dr. No-No, and she can kind of give you guys a little more information about how to reach us. So we have a lot of social media outlets, all for the purpose to keep you updated and to keep you informed after we do our podcast show.
00:08:11
Speaker
So first I'm going to start with our Facebook page. If you just type in chocolate with a side of medicine or if you can search us by our handle titled the chocolate MDS, you'll be able to find us on our Facebook page in addition to our Twitter account as well. We also have our Instagram account aptly titled the chocolate MDS.
00:08:36
Speaker
And that you can also find us there, any new information pertaining to the show, any cool topics that we have planned for y'all. You'll be able to find out any one of those three outlets. In addition, we also have part of our segment, questions from the audience. So if you have any questions about topics that you might have covered in previous shows or upcoming shows, then you can also email us at
00:09:01
Speaker
TheChocolateMDS at gmail.com. And we're all checking that account every single day. So definitely we'll be answering your questions and definitely we'll include them in part of our future shows to come.

Closing Remarks & Health Advisory

00:09:15
