Introduction & Listener Submissions

00:00:15
Speaker
Kayla. We're back with another bonus episode of Bring Your Own. We had so many amazing submissions for top tens of the year that we broke it up into two parts. So this is our second part of rating our listeners top 10 books. If you haven't listened to the first one yet, go check that one out. But we're excited to keep going.
00:00:34
Speaker
But before we jump into these lists, what are we reading? What are we drinking? I'll go first. I just have some water with me at the moment in my cute little anthropology knockoff glasses from World Market. And I am currently reading Destructively Mine by KBR. I started it a couple days ago, but I haven't really gotten to pick it up since then, but I just finished the prologue, long fucking prologue.
00:01:01
Speaker
But I'm,

Book Discussions & Recommendations

00:01:02
Speaker
I'm excited. I really liked the first book. love So I also just have water today and I am reading the bridge kingdom series right now. I just finished the traitor queen, traitor queen last week. And I really, really liked that one. So I'm going to read the inadequate air. Thank you audible for all of them being free. Love that. So, and there is an audible shout out on the pot is correct monster ah hold on You know what's so funny though really quick brandy is in between I cuz I didn't know that this was a thing like in between chapters They don't say the chapters. There's like little like drums and you going on tooo Or like the storm crashing it's ash yeah it's like a lightning or something and I'm just like what is happening me listening in two and a half speed it's like data they did either they did I Like thought it was just like ah like if
00:01:53
Speaker
one-time thing like for a prologue no it's the entire book so yeah very interesting i got another beer there's a movie with it's called august s.h county and real sheep goes i'm a drug addict um i think about that all the time i had a friend in college i would always reenact it um and i think i'm gonna start soon the prison healer by lenette noni which is on my friend's tbr as well last Okay, what about it? Brandy, do we need a rewind to how long did it take you to do when the world tips over? Oh, yeah. So I'm just saying you've been saying you are going to start it. That reason why forever to read but I started it.
00:02:42
Speaker
Listen, the reason why is because my friend Monica was annotating it for me and it finally got to my house. So and I've just been getting through some other reads at the moment, but it will be right before the end of the year period. And yeah, that's it.

Rating Listeners' Top Ten Books

00:02:56
Speaker
So if you listened to part one of where we ranked where we rated our listeners top 10 books of the year, we gave each list a letter grade. So how this works again is we will Read your username and then your entire list and then give you a letter grade based off of the vibes, how we feel about it. Listen, your taste is your taste. Own it. Our opinion should not affect how you feel about your list. Some of these lists are amazing. Some of these lists we think are a little crazy, but that's okay. You probably think our lists are a little crazy. But yeah, thank you to everyone who submitted. We have loved looking at everyone's list. It allows us to be so nosy.
00:03:37
Speaker
It's so fun. Kendra, do you want to read the first one? Yes. This one was submitted by page be underscore reads, aka page, who's one of my favorite people to DM. um Also, I hope you guys are if you're listening, like these are some people that you should be following on Instagram. A lot of these people are fellow bookish content creators like ourselves. um So page is a really good follow.
00:03:58
Speaker
First on her list is How to End a Love Story by Yulin Kwang, As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow by Zofa Kato, Funny Story by Emily Henry, Slow Dance by Rainbow Row, Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors, The Unmaking of June Farrell by Adrienne Young, a novel love story by Ashley Poston, The Wedding People by Alison Espach, The Ex-Vows by Jessica Joyce, and then Ready or Not by Kara Bestone.
00:04:23
Speaker
I'm going to give this one an N for not like other girls because Paige is the only person I've seen talk positively about and not or a novel love story by Ashley Austin. But I will say I like she's very much like me because the rest of this list is like books that I love or think I probably would love if I read so giving you a W for well read like Paige is always reading. Paige has great taste.
00:04:49
Speaker
I'm going to give it an S for a same girl because there's a lot of faves on here that are also on my list or just books that I also really, really love. Blue Sisters, June Farrow, Wedding People, Expos, Carabaso, Lemon Trees, lots of great faves on here. Yeah. Great list, Paige. Megaslay.
00:05:11
Speaker
Next is from Read with Meegs aka Meghan.

Book List Reviews & Personal Insights

00:05:15
Speaker
Hi Meghan, we love you. um Also Meghan, we always say Reads with Meegs. Is it Reads with Meegs? Oh my god, yeah. I just like say Meegs, I think because seeing it spelled out like that, my mind is like Meegs. So sorry, girl, if you don't like that. Okay.
00:05:30
Speaker
ah Unloved by Peyton Corinne, Sunday Morning by Julie Ann, Fangirl Down by Tessa Bailey, Just for the Summer by Abby Jimenez, Savor It by Tara DeWitt, Heathen and Honeysuckle by Sarah A. Bailey, Play Along by Liz Tom 40, The X-Files by Jessica Joyce, and Wrath of an Exile by Monty J.
00:05:50
Speaker
I give this an F for finger in the booty because I'm so sorry. And has fangirl down on it. I've never even read that book. I've never read it. But the only thing I know is that she, no, not finger in the booty, my bad girl. You get an A for, no, you get an E, eat the booty. Cause she eats his ass. And that's all I know from that book. That's all I know. No one tells you what the plot is, but it's just that I knew an asshole was involved in that. Her, she got in it on it.
00:06:20
Speaker
licked it did something with it so you get an e for it no and wait e yeah and an an f you get a lot of letters yeah you're ready i didn't get this but list and Megan's entire account, a U for underground because Megan stays reading books I've never heard of in my life. Like she is a true influencer because she will read the most random fucking book and she'll be like, this is so good. I loved it. And then I'm like, Oh, I'll pick it up. You know, like influencing to the max.
00:07:08
Speaker
Yeah. oh Yeah. I'm so sorry. my Every thought went out of my head when Kendra gave Megan three letter craze. I don't know. I love you, Megan. That's all I got. You did great. OK. She has your fave on there, Kayla. She does. She has several faves of like she's got play along, ex vows, yeah savor it just for the summer. Great picks.
00:07:31
Speaker
All right. Our next list is coming from Hailey.Reads, aka Hailey. Our list goes When the Reckoning Comes by Latanya McQueen, The Rage of Dragons by Evan Winter, Air by Saba Tahir, The Maid and the Crocodile by Jordan Ifueko, The City in Glass by Naiji Vo, hope I'm pronouncing that correctly, The Weight of Blood by Tiffany D. Jackson, The Vanished Birds by Simon Jimenez, Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse,
00:08:01
Speaker
and The Sky Bled by S. Hotty and The Seventh Veil of Salome by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. See, I'm giving it an F for fantasy. Yeah. I was going to say F for fantasy, but like not like.
00:08:15
Speaker
I know a lot of people like say fantasy girl. Lots of it is at least at our quote unquote little like little corner has a little bit of romance. And I know that like air by Saba Tahir does have romance in it. But admittedly, I don't know much about these other books. And I know Haley is a huge fantasy girl. Like she yeah actively seeks out a lot of fantasy books and especially a lot of fantasy books by POC authors. So, yeah, she's she's like if I need like a fantasy, like a true fantasy, she'll she'll she'll give you that right. Always taking notes from Miss Haley girl. Age for heavy hitter. Oh she's holding Jade City in her profile picture. Hey girl. Yeah she loves Jade City. And and she's she's local. Hey girl. Oh slay. Our next list comes from
00:09:08
Speaker
monies.bookshelf aka Monica who is a long-standing friend of the pod. um Her list goes When Villains Rise by Gianna Darling. Magnolia Parks Into the Dark by Jessica Hastings. Ready or Not by Cara Bastone. Favorite by Tara DeWitt. Just For the Summer by Abby Jimenez. This Summer Will Be Different by Carly Fortune. Love Unwritten by Lauren Asher. Play Along by Liz Tom Fordy, With Syria by Adeline Grace, Funny Story by Emily Henry, and Clockwork Princess by Cassie Clare are her honorable mentions.
00:09:40
Speaker
um not to like toot my own horn but i feel like this list is i for influence because monica and i read very similarly and i love giving her recommendations she loves giving me recommendations and she's just great good taste i mean i didn't like the summer will be different her and i have talked about it i actually told her i didn't like it and then she read it and she ended up loving it so my opinion is not the end all be all see wait i thought you did like it you just didn't like it as much so which is it i give that I give the book 3.5 stars. That's crazy. That's actually insane. and
00:10:14
Speaker
i i It's a bonus episode, guys. We don't have time to get into it anyways. You're right. Anyways. Not Kendra being me yet, police. That's yeah crazy. Yeah. Loves and love playing on there. Whoa.
00:10:29
Speaker
Uh, yeah, I was going to say K for Kendra. Like I just, I feel like, cause I'm friends with you both on Storygraph. So I'll see you read something and then a little bit later Monica's reading it and vice versa. Like Monica will read something and then a little bit later you're reading it. So I love to see it. I love Monica. We all love Monica. She's great. I'm going to, I don't know. I'm like trying to like think of something different that I haven't given like anybody else. Cause I was just going to go tea for taste, but like how boring.
00:10:57
Speaker
That's a good idea, girl. You think I have tea for taste? Yeah. Still tea for taste. Okay, I'll just take it. Tea for Troy.
00:11:04
Speaker
Bye! All right, next we have Jaela is reading our friend Jaela. Hey, girl. She has Ready or Not by Cara Bastone. Dress for the Summer by Abby Jimenez. Love Unwritten by Lauren Asher. A lot of similarities from the last list. Bride by Allie Hazelwood. Funny Story by Emily Henry. Ex Vows by Jessica Joyce. Savor It by Tara DeWitt. And This Could Be Us by Kennedy Ryan.
00:11:32
Speaker
This could be my list, Jayla. Like, uh. R for romance, like that was like just pure romance, like some of the best romances of the year. Someone has talked about romances of the year. Jayla, your taste. yeah Exquisite.
00:11:47
Speaker
Yeah. L for lover girl. Jayla's a lover girl. Her list is lover girl. Oh, my. nose to That's crazy. Now we kiss. No, it's OK. Yeah. Anytime Jared, and I do something like that. We're like, oh, my God, we should get married. Cute. OK. Good list, Jayla. We love you.
00:12:05
Speaker
Next is from A Paperback Live, which is our friend, Bernie. We love Bernie. Bernie has Funny Story by Emily Henry, The Ex-Vows by Jessica Joyce, Deep End by Allie Hazelwood. Ooh, this list is so on the note, like on the pulse. Brand new. Yeah. Margo's Got Money Troubled by Rufy Thorpe, Bride by Allie Hazelwood, Slow Dance by Rainbow Rowell, Promise Me Sunshine by Cara Bastone, The Art of Catching Feelings by Alicia Thompson, and Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors.
00:12:35
Speaker
you get a T for trendsetter. I was gonna say Q for queen of book talk or bookstagram. Yeah, I feel like Bernie is always like reading the thing like at the moment or like right before it becomes a moment. Yeah, you know what I'm saying? Yep. So yeah, that's that's a good letter grade brand. I recently saw Bernie post how many books she's read this year and it was something it was a very impressive number like 75 or something like that. But the way that Bernie posts and the impact Bernie has on the bookstagram community at least like the circle that we're in i would have thought she's reading 200 300 books a year because it just seems like every book she talks about is so yeah yeah like yeah yeah i don't know it has such an impact and uh bernie if you're listening i have not stopped thinking about the art of catching feelings we have different ratings for that book
00:13:23
Speaker
But they were a hot couple, they were a cute couple, shitty trope. I would re-listen. Kristin C did such a good job. Honestly, I think you guys might enjoy it if you wanted to listen to it. It's a good book. Yeah, I know. You keep saying that. I honestly just keep...
00:13:38
Speaker
he forget to be a good book yeah That joke doesn't bother me as much as it bothers you so I do I do want to try Oh, but it's it's bad. It's bad in this one. You like you say that it's bad. You're gonna be like girl like you you have to stop. Yeah okay okay can i Can I be Like similar to what we've given others and I was just gonna say like I for influencer cuz I feel like Bernie Yeah, or Bernie is the capital T influencer, you know what I'm saying? So yeah capital I I the the wow let me oh The Ohio State. Got it. The influencer. I was like, iler you I break it down with football and they're like, oh, we got it. Oh, I get it. Okay, the next list is by MG dot.Robinson. Their list goes Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson. Circe by Madeline Miller. Play Along by Liz Tom 40. Today Tonight Tomorrow by Rachel Lynn Solomon. The Fake Mate by Lana Ferguson. Just For The Summer by Abby Jimenez. Funny Story by Emily Henry. Love Unwritten by Lauren Asher. Twisted Games by Anna Wong. And Caught Up by Liz Tom 40. This is a B for Book Talk because I feel like you are very on Book Talk.
00:14:50
Speaker
um but not just romance book talk like you are on all sides the fact that you have Cersei and just mercy on here like you are reading what the people tell you to read i would love to see who you follow outside of us because you probably follow some really good people I was going to do Art for Range because of like having Circe on here as well as Twisted Games by Anna Wong. like I feel like those are very different sides of Book Talk, but like you were saying, Kendra, like those are very like Book Talk books. on yeah so i love I love to see the range.
00:15:24
Speaker
I agree with you guys. I will also throw out another letter for S for shocked, because again, with the rage, like the fake mate and twisted games, just like the next suggests mercy if vastly different nature of some of these books is crazy. But you know what? I like i like that you kind of dip your toes all over the place. Like that just yeah makes, I think, for a more fun experience. And yeah, you're well read in all areas.
00:15:53
Speaker
I was gonna say that like reads like a list of somebody who just like loves to read you know yeah exactly yeah I would love to so know how many books you read because this range I'm assuming you read a lot like mm-hmm yeah Next is Yas Reads with two S's. We have Only With You by E. Salvador, Butcher in Blackbird by Bryn Weaver, You With a View by Jessica Joyce, Not Another Love Song by Julie Soto, The Annihilator by Runix, and The Poppy War by R.F. Kwang. That whole trilogy, I'm assuming.
00:16:24
Speaker
Got another one with a lot of rage. The Annihilator and the Poppy War trilogy being on the same list. I'm like, OK. Both have a lot of violence, maybe. True. but your But then you with the views on there. Yeah, no. Yeah. I haven't heard of Only With You by Yves Salvador. I don't know what that one is. I think you would recognize the cover. OK. I think I can picture it in my head. Yeah.
00:16:49
Speaker
Yeah, I got to give another R for range, like is there romantic range because these are all still romances. Except for the popular. Well, not the popular. Not the popular. Well, according to a certain book talk user. Oh, my God. An academic rivals lovers get fucked. Yeah, I my mind exploded when I saw that book at or that when I saw that post. Anyways, that's from book talk archives right there. If you guys are around for that. But yeah, R for range.
00:17:19
Speaker
in parentheses, romantic range with the Poppy Wars. Yeah, I love Butcher and Blackbird. I made my list last year and the Poppy War trilogy made my list two years ago. So I love love to see those on there.
00:17:33
Speaker
Yeah, I, similar to like the R for range, yeah, the, the i mean you know, I'm gonna say C for contrast, because there's a lot of like- You're so different. Synonyms, synonyms, we love to see it. But I just feel like the ones that are contrasting, they're like on such different ends of the spectrum, um but I love it, so, say.
00:17:58
Speaker
That's so fun.

Unique Selections & Final Thoughts

00:18:01
Speaker
Our next one comes from boba dot.t dot.reads, our friend Dana. My old coworker, hey girl, how's LA? She has The Kiss Quotient by Helen Wong, The Night Ends with Fire by KX Song, A Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangum Mondana, A Love Like the Sun by Ris M. Nielsen, Hooked by Emily McIntyre, Butcher and Blackbird by Bryn Weaver, Seven Summer Weekends by Jane L. Rosen, Our Missing Hearts by Celeste Ng, and Bride by Ali Hazelwood.
00:18:36
Speaker
Dana reads a lot of books, similar to like that we were just talking about with Megan at the top of the episode. Dana will read a book I've never heard of often. There's a couple on here that I've never heard of. What have you never heard of?
00:18:48
Speaker
The night ends with fire. Oh, I read that one. Oh, sorry. It's a Mulan retelling. No, no, it's fine. It's a Mulan retelling. Oh, is it the law? I haven't heard of are missing. oh No, I feel like I have maybe are missing hearts. I've heard of. She wrote Little Fires Everywhere. So I know. Oh, yeah. Duh. That's where I know that name. OK. You're so right. And then Seven Summer Weekends. I i read that cover floating around. Oh, you have. OK. I read it. Yeah. or not Okay. Yeah, I like it like um I would give this an S for sleeper hit mainly because of seven summer weekends Like that's a sleeper hit. It's not like it won't change your life. Well, it isn't your top ten list. Sorry. It didn't change my life but um It was a really solid read. I read it when I was packing I think to move this summer so it was one of those and it was very quick and it was good it's actually a s sequel but you don't need to read the first one because Yeah, you know
00:19:40
Speaker
I love seeing The Kiss Quotient at the top of your list, Dana. I'm curious if you have read The Bride Test and The Heart Principle, because I think both of those books are better than The Kiss Quotient in my opinion. So I would be curious if you have finished the trilogy or not, and if you stand on The Kiss Quotient being your favorite, if you have.
00:19:59
Speaker
I would say like V for variety not only because she does have a lot of like POC authors on here but also because she again ranges from fantasy to romance and like Kendra said with the sleeper hit you don't see a lot of these um on like the really popular book talk videos things like that but they're still good books so like i really like that she's got like you know she's not like other girls she's got some different ones yeah i like that
00:20:31
Speaker
okay and for our final top 10 list it comes from pages of kc aka kc her list is the nightingale by chris and hannah yours truly by abby hamenez the women by chris and hannah slow dance by rambo rowell bear town by frederick bachmann just for the summer by abby hamenez not another love song by julie soto bunny story by emily henry and throne of glass by sjm which was a reread and i put I gave you an I for interesting because I have never counted a reread on my top 10 list. I think if I did that, my list would yeah probably say stagnant. um It would be constantly picked up. yeah Yeah, but I really want to read Kris and Hannah. I actually just got one of her. I just got the women in the mail. So I want to read her next year because she's kind of like taking over book talk right now. Like a lot of girls are reading her. I know she's been established so for a minute. so
00:21:23
Speaker
I read The Four Winds by her a couple years ago. I like randomly bought it in Costco. oh I don't know what possessed me to do that. um But I read that one and I really enjoyed it. I just never read anymore, but The Nightingale and The Women in particular, every time I see everybody reading it, they're like sobbing their eyes out. So actually that's what my rating is gonna be.
00:21:50
Speaker
Tea for Tears because Nightingale, Women, Bear Town, Just for the Summer, you know, even like Yours Truly, I see a lot of people cry with those books. Yeah. Tea for Tears. And like Throne of Glass, even like a lot of people cried throughout that whole series. So Casey, are you OK? Is everything OK?
00:22:09
Speaker
I would give Kasey's list an S for slow dance sister because she is one of the only other people besides Kendra who will scream about slow dance with me in the way that it deserves to be screamed about. So she had me pick a book for her friend's TBR for next year and I gave her a landline. So like you really gotta to go talk to Christine. Like she loves rainbow. I will be there.
00:22:35
Speaker
Slay, wow.
