Introduction and Excitement for Fanfiction

00:00:08
Speaker
Welcome to Bring Your Own, a catch-all book in most of my podcasts. I'm Brandi. I'm Kendra. I'm Kayla. And today, you guys, we're going to talk about fanfiction today. We're all so excited. I am so thrilled. I showed them that I wrote down all these notes. It's not a lot, but like I love fanfiction. This is an episode that I've personally wanted to do since like season one. So now we can finally do it and it makes me so happy.
00:00:32
Speaker
Yeah, I'm really excited. And I didn't, when we initially said like, okay, we're going to do this episode, I was a little nervous just because like, I'll talk more about my experience with fanfiction, but it's pretty limited. But it's been so fun preparing for this episode.

Current Reads and Drinks

00:00:44
Speaker
So before we jump in, what are we reading? What are we drinking? Um, I'll go first. I am still listening to Belladonna by Adeline Grace. We're re-listening to it. Um,
00:00:57
Speaker
I texted Kayla last night just to kind of be like an asshole. She loves to do this. with me I don't know why about my faves. It is a little crazy thinking about how death has known of his connection with Signe since she was two months old. L-L-L-L-L. And then we had a whole conversation. Because now that I'm back in, I'm like, no, he made it pretty obvious. Like, I've been doing all this for you since you were born. Never mind. I'm not i'm not even going to entertain it with first class. So I'm re-listening to Bella Dawn. It's such a fun time. Like, I loved it the first time around. I'm loving it this time around. And then last night, ladies,
00:01:36
Speaker
I officially started ah Business Casual by B.K. Morris. Oh god. Yeah. um I'm not gonna send you guys any updates or anything like I am just gonna read it by myself. I will say I read the first chapter and I really liked the first chapter so um we will see. I have been told that this will most likely be my favorite out of the series.
00:01:57
Speaker
I definitely think it'll be that high. Yeah. I definitely think it'll be your favorite in the series. I'm just curious to see if you like like it. Yeah. Yeah. I hope you do. I really hope you do. I am on my knees begging, please. And I believe you. Yeah. um i I really want to like it. Anybody be even better if I loved it. So yeah. Okay. And I am drinking um out of a red solo cup and iced coffee that I made at home.
00:02:23
Speaker
I'll go. I just have water right now. But I just started this morning, Fear the Flames by Olivia Rose Darling. Ooh. Thank you, Parrish. Yep. I just downloaded that one. Love that. Nice, nice. I've like, you know, I mean, I love fantasy books anyway, but like recently I've read a ton. I read seven fantasy books last month. And so I'm like just continuing that. And it's fall. So it's the best time to read fantasy. So vibes are high.
00:02:53
Speaker
and The vibes are very high right now, so just continuing that streak. I'm not physically reading anything at the moment, but I have a couple in mind. We'll see where I land. What what do you have in mind?
00:03:06
Speaker
I have a physical art of definitely better now that I know kinder really liked so but I think I want to save that I want to save that I think from an upcoming road trip just like to have a physical book you know on on the trip um I have thank you for sharing by Rachel Runa Katz on Libby there was one other like I just can't remember but anyway I have a couple options so we'll see we'll see yeah I am currently drinking a matcha latte. That was so cute. Thank you. I got it from World Market. I have some that have little strawberries and little mushrooms on them too. I think I saw a TikTok of those. Yeah, because people, oh they remind me of the, I guess anthropology also sells cups like that, but World Market has it like for cheaper.
00:03:50
Speaker
Yep. They're like $6 each at World Market. um So yeah, I bought a bunch of those. I've been learning how to make Maja at home. I don't have all the correct tools yet. I just bought them online and they're on their way. So it's fine. It's a little grainy right now, but I'm hoping that as I ah like get better at making it, it'll be a little bit less.
00:04:09
Speaker
that way. um But that's why I'm not drinking. And then I just last night, as I was falling asleep, finished Scattered Showers by Rainbow Rowell on audio. It was so fun and so good. And it was like nice revisiting some characters that are in some of her books and then like also just like some brand new stuff. She's just The way she writes is like very much for me, like I, like everything that's happened, like, I don't know, just the way she writes. And I wish I could explain that better, but how she structure sentences and feelings and things like that just really works for me. So I am still, still, still, still physically reading when the world tips over and I'm still having a great time. It's kind of funny. When did you start that book?
00:04:54
Speaker
about three weeks ago yeah so no longer than no i started in august so it's been at most a month i could have when you started i swear to god you were like reading it last season about it in july thanks Sorry, not to put you on the spot, but it has been long. I just want to share that I have finished other physical books in that time. It's just, I don't know, you guys. Maybe I should just pause it and like pick something else up. I really, I have an arc of first time caller by B.K. Borison that I really want to read. Oh my God, you're right. I started at July 20th.
00:05:31
Speaker
So it wasn't last season, it wasn't last season. Okay, whatever. Yeah, I started it July 20th. So it's been about a month and a half of reading that book. But you know what? Slow and steady wins the race. You're doing the best you can. I think I just should wait for the audio. Like I think especially for me for Litfic, like it's better for me to do on audio. I don't know.
00:05:58
Speaker
You guys, I just had to come to Jesus a moment. I'm gonna pause that book. I'm gonna take it off of my Goodreads until the audio comes out and then I'm gonna listen to the audio. Me deciding that like a week before it comes out. And again, nothing against the book. No, no, no, no, you guys, I'm loving the book. It's so good. I'm just like really struggling to get myself to pick it up, especially when I am an audio girly to my core. So if I'm listening to something great, why would I pick up my book when I could be listening to my audiobook. Okay, wow. Yeah, I'm gonna stop that right now. I think part of it, the reason I've been so unwilling to is I'm just so grateful that like, penguin teen has like, they sent me a box for it. They, you know, like, I just I've wanted I've wanted to you guys anyways.
00:06:50
Speaker
And it's a big release. Yeah. And like i I was so excited for that book. like I'll give you the song as one of my favorite books ever. so um But yeah, so I'm going to pause out at a hot take, guys. so Not hot take. Hot off the presses. I will be starting first time caller later today. OK. There we go. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, guys. Oh, and I'm listening to Blonde Dice first. Nice.
00:07:14
Speaker
All right, shall we jump into our fan fiction talk?

What is Fanfiction and Why it Matters

00:07:17
Speaker
Yes, I'm so excited because there might be people listening that don't know what fan fiction is. Yeah. So fan fiction is any work of art, usually the written work that is created based off of an original IP, but you do not sell it. So that is a big, big, big factor. You upload it on a site where it is free to read, free to access, um and then people can engage in it. And then you join in community. So there is a big thing going around right now, people binding fan fictions that they get off of line and then selling them on Etsy, which is a huge no-no, which can get people in trouble because you are literally taking other people's IP and doing what you want with it. And we want to keep it that way, keep it free. So if you see that on Etsy,
00:08:01
Speaker
don't it do it. You can print it out yourself and bind it yourself. You just cannot sell it. um Yeah, yeah. Many of your favorite authors have come from fan fiction, yeah probably like Soto, Ali Hazelwood, Kate Goldbeck. yeah who else Katie Katugno used to write fan fiction back in the day. Yeah, your fave your fave author probably wrote fan fiction. back in the day. I think the girl that does, um, I haven't read the books, uh, Runia, runics, runics. She was a big fan fiction writer who wrote for a fandom that I used to read. I don't think I read any of her stuff in the fandom, but Christina Lauren met the writing fanfic. Yes. Twilight fanfiction.

First Encounters with Fanfiction

00:08:45
Speaker
The beautiful series is Twilight fanfiction
00:08:50
Speaker
revised so yeah that's great i didn't know that that's why so for you guys what was your first experience with fanfiction was it recent or did you read it growing up i know for myself i did read a little bit of it growing up i don't think i was like as ingrained in the community as many people probably were but i did read fanfiction when i was like in middle school in high school so Yeah, I did not know fan fiction existed until I entered the bookstagram community in 2020.
00:09:23
Speaker
Yeah, so yeah, no, my the only fanfic I have even tried to read is like that Reese POV of a Court of Mist and Fury. Yeah, when I was tried that one too. Yeah, I was like deep in my brain rot. Like I just could I finished the series and didn't want to let go back in twenty twenty one, you know, so I tried to read that. I read a couple scenes like I read my favorite scenes of Mist and Fury, whatever. But it was really hard for me to like I don't know, it's just been belief because I guess I just hadn't had that like practice of being like, you know, turning your brain off and saying like, this is something else than like the actual book. So I was like, oh, I don't think Sarah J. Mass would write like that. Like, that's a fucking point, dumbass. Yeah, I think. Yeah, I think that's why I've always struggled to do like fan fiction for books, because like writing style is so important. Whereas with TV, movies, you don't see how... There is no writing style. Yeah. It's just dialogue and characters and you're focusing in

Favorite Fandoms and Characters

00:10:22
Speaker
on that. So if that's accurate, it can be written any way. My first experience with fan fiction had to have been... It has to be either 2008 or 2009, because I remember I was on YouTube. This was back when... Did your family have a family computer? Yes. Yes. Okay, so I'm at the family computer. It's upstairs. It's in our game room.
00:10:42
Speaker
You're painting the scene, i' I'm there. Yes, and um I was obsessed with Hannah Montana, Miley Cyrus in particular. um And so I would go on YouTube all the time and then just type in like Miley Cyrus like Hannah Montana and just watch like, they used to just be like picture like slideshows. yeah Right. And I forget the website that allowed people to do it, but like you would, it was like what CapCut, like this CapCut would not exist without this website. And I can't think of it, but it I would watch the slideshows. No, it was something complete. Like I forget what it was called, but you would like make like videos and you can add texts.
00:11:14
Speaker
So I don't know, honestly, how I found it, but it was a Miley Cyrus, Zach Efron. Like that was a big thing back in like 2000. 2009 people shipped them together and it was I steer away from real people now, but back then I didn't care I wanted to read it and so I would watch all these girls videos of like Zac Efron and Miley Cyrus and The text would be like he came to my house. We hung out pool like it wasn't anything crazy or dirty It was like literally just them like making out and stuff. And then I remember Robert Pattinson got involved um Because this was like Twilight like era so he was big too so it was just like all the all the like
00:11:53
Speaker
it teen celebrities at the time where like people just like write fan fictions with them on YouTube. And then yeah, that was my very first experience. I took a few years off after that and then jumped back in fully.
00:12:06
Speaker
i I was sort of similar. like I was also very obsessed with Disney around that time, specifically the Jonas Brothers. It was more like the 2007 era when Nick and Miley were dating. I think that was like 2007 or maybe. mike joseph have a stage she doesn't six yeah Like was like six, seven. Yeah, it was six, seven, because Taylor and Joe were a couple years after that, and two and they were 2008.
00:12:31
Speaker
well got chosen and cheney that was un feeling hena too yeah anyway so i was I was a huge Jonas Brothers fan and so there was this channel I remember called Nick J3 on YouTube that would make a lot of Nick Jonas edits and like a couple of the Um, no, that's kind of where I first like learned about fan fiction. And then I vividly remember reading this, this fanfic. I didn't really like to read fanfic about like necessarily two celebrities together. I would, I like to read fanfic about a celebrity in a normal person. And so, or like an unknown self insert, you know? So, uh, so I vividly remember this one fanfic about, about this, like, was it still on YouTube? I'm sorry. No, this one was on fanfiction.net. So how did you get to fanfiction dot.net? I literally, I yeah honestly had zero idea. Mine was through YouTube comments. I think the girl wanted to continue the story, so she was like, go to, ok this is a different fandom at the later. Yeah. so yeah yeah i I literally have zero idea where I, it's totally possible that that was the case, but I did end up on fanfic.net. And there was this one of this girl who meets them at this party. Why she's there, I don't recall.
00:13:46
Speaker
but she's a ballet dancer. But I vividly remember reading this one scene where like she has her own like dance room in her house, Rich, and she is like dancing around the mirror. There's mirrors everywhere, and like Nick comes in, and they're like dancing together. And I remember the the music that the girl set to the scene, because she was like, oh, and he starts to play this song, and it was Fall For You by Secondhand Serenade, which of course if you know,
00:14:12
Speaker
It's like, that's where I first got into that song. You know, now it's like a huge meme. Yeah. Tonight will be the night that I will fall for you. Yeah. So anyway, I like vividly remember reading that scene and thinking that this was like, this is literature. It would be epitome of romance, right? You're like, oh my gosh. Literally a scene from Stolen Air by Sophie Lark. I wonder if that was the girl that she was writing. I know. Yeah.
00:14:41
Speaker
Anyway. Yeah. And then, then from there, I also got into like, you know, TV shows. It was mostly TV shows that yeah that's what the I read. um But yeah, that was like one of my like foundational blocks of fan fiction for me. That is so awesome. And what? Okay. So like, what were you guys reading then? Like, what was your fandoms? Okay. So I wrote a whole list of every major fan that I used to keep up with. So I'm like, so I love this. I got into like,
00:15:12
Speaker
fan fiction, fan fiction though. Like obviously I did the, it was called Xylee. I did the Xylee stuff on YouTube and then I like forgot about it. And then one summer I had to babysit my niece and I would just put on victorious for her. And I got so into victorious. So I did the same like pipeline of like starting off on YouTube, looking up like edits of the cast and like, or just the characters. And then that led me to fanfiction.net. And that's when I discovered the treasure chest.
00:15:41
Speaker
of fics that were written for Beck and Jade, who became like my first like official like ship. Like I was so obsessed with them. I wrote for them. Are they the two that date actually in the show? Like the Mean Girl? Yeah, Beck and Jade. Yeah. Yeah. So Liz Gillies' character and then Avan Jogia's character. I was just oh my God, like their fan fiction writers ate down. It's it's so good. I loved it. And then yeah, I would write my own. I'm not.
00:16:10
Speaker
telling you where it is or I need to go and delete it because it's not good. But there's just so much good stuff. So I did Victoria's. I did Victoria's for years, like through high school. So I did Beck and Jade from Victoria's. I would read Jade and Andre from Victoria's. Jade and Tori should have known I was a little, you know, um and then there was a side character named Ryder that people would always ship Jade with just because he was mainly hot. And so like so pretty much anyone that Liz Gillies is character could be shipped with on that show. I was reading it.
00:16:40
Speaker
And I was reading filthy stuff. I don't know. I don't know. I shouldn't have been shouldn't have been. But if you saw that, it's like ah such a foundational experience. Yeah. Yeah. Like I saw that rated. Well, I was clicking. Like I couldn't. So and then when I was in high school, I got really into the TV show Arrow. Like it was my everything. And then I got me into Oliver and Felicity, which was Olicity and their fandom is I mean, Stephen Amell kind of ruined it. But I vividly remember, like, Olicity fan fiction being a huge thing. like I wasn't I never watched that show. But like, I know that those people really, yeah, really hard for those characters. I was one of them. Like, I would go to conventions and like, I loved it so much. um And runics, who we mentioned earlier in the episode, she used to write Olicity fan fiction. I think there were some other
00:17:35
Speaker
Arrow fanfic writers that have been published. um I don't know who they are. Yes. Oh my God. Yes. Susanna Nix. If you've read her books, she's a fan. She's read fanfiction for Arrow. I still have her. I have a ah tab saved on my phone that has like all my favorite fan fictions.
00:17:51
Speaker
Um, and, uh, I used to read a lot of her stuff and she took some of the fix and then published them into self published novels and her covers are so cute. Um, so very proud of her. So, okay. Victorious arrow. I did camp rock fan fiction, yeah but the danger with camp rock fan fiction is that because their characters were so similar.
00:18:16
Speaker
at least career-filled to the actual actors. that like a lot The lines in the fanfiction were really blurred, like blurred. I remember one explicitly where like they they did a lot of drugs and I was like eating it up. like It was that. Probably not that far from the truth.
00:18:31
Speaker
That's what I'm saying. like it like yeah But they would just say, like, Shane and Michie, you know? yeah So I would read Shane and Michie. And then i in college, I also tried Brooklyn and Nine-Nine fanfiction, but it

Diversity in Fanfiction Genres and Platforms

00:18:41
Speaker
was like sad stuff. Like, Jake and Amy, like, having a miscarriage. And like, it was just sad. And then um I've done some Cool Prince fanfiction as well, okay um which has been nice. It's usually like... one shots of like them finding out they were having a baby or them you know walking the island that you know he raised from the dead. Core Prince actually has a lot of fan fiction, but again, I run into the issue of like Holly Black doesn't sound like that. yeah No. Those are all the fandoms off the top of my head that I know I have read a lot. Oh, and Gossip Girl. Oh my God. I read so much Gossip Girl fan fiction. Gossip Girl fan fiction? Insane. So good.
00:19:19
Speaker
That show is already insane. I can't imagine what people are like. Let's make this more insane. It's so much fun because like Gossip Girl is one of those shows where there's so much lore ah between the characters before the show even started. So yeah, fanfic writers just explored all of that, which was a blast. And then like post show of like them being adults and like having to deal with their wealth as well. So.
00:19:41
Speaker
I didn't read nearly as many fandoms, I don't think. Yeah, I mostly stayed in the Disney Channel lane, but specifically, I did read Camp Rock, but more specifically, what I would read was Sunny with the Chance fanfiction, that very short-lived Demi Lovato show, because I was obsessed with Demi Lovato, and I ah loved her and Chad together. At the time, I thought that he was like the hottest thing to ever walk the earth, which is crazy.
00:20:09
Speaker
I know a blonde. But anyway, so I read that a lot. I also did write Sunny with the Chance fan fiction. That was the only fandom that I ever wrote for. It is gone now. You will not find it. It is deleted. um My parents found it once and I was like so embarrassed. So I deleted it.
00:20:26
Speaker
Was it explicit? No, no, no, no, oh it was not. But yeah, yeah, no, but i I mean, I was also still no more. you know morph i But I was also yet clicking that m reading. I was mostly reading one shots, to be honest with you. I just like wanted the immediate satisfaction of people being together, whether it was explicit or not. It like didn't I didn't really care. I just wanted to read it all. I also read for a a fandom called it was a science fiction TV show called Fringe that like nobody watched but me and I was up obsessed with it. But the fan fiction was really like the fan fiction community for that show was like really rampant. um If you like ever saw like Lost when it was airing Fringe was kind of a similar show. So I absolutely ate that up and it started like Joshua Jackson who was like to me the hottest man alive. So there we go. That's that's mostly what I
00:21:23
Speaker
What I did that was my experience. Yeah, I love that I was gonna say I've noticed that with smaller shows that's usually when the fandom was even more Yeah, like insane feral especially cuz you got to do so many like save the show campaigns, which is I know we did get there We did a lot of save the show campaigns for fringe and we actually won. We got two more seasons out. It was amazing Wow, you're you're a soldier.
00:21:47
Speaker
That's amazing. I'm remembering now as you guys are talking about this that my best friend in like all, you know, from elementary school through high school, she read not Harry Potter fan fiction, but she read a very Potter musical fan fiction. Oh, so like very specifically like heavy. Do you guys know like a very Potter musical or whatever? I've heard of it. I've heard of it. that would if Is that what?
00:22:11
Speaker
um what's his name was yes yeah yeah yeah it's like this organization called star kid or whatever where they put like it's basically like parody musicals um and she was obsessed with that because she was obsessed with harry potter she became obsessed with that and then she started reading a very potter musical fan fiction like very specifically which is seems insane but go off Yeah. That's interesting, Kayla. Earlier, you said you only did like one shots. Mostly, but yeah, not all the time. I did a mix for sure, but like my favorites. Well, no, I actually have a lot of one shot favorites too, but the ones that I like think about the most, like I checked last night, it is a Bruce Wayne, Felicity Smough, Cannon Divergent, AU thick.
00:22:53
Speaker
where um Bruce Wayne and Felicity end up together. And it's like such a good love triangle. Like it's one of the best love triangles I've ever read. um It's unfinished, which makes me mad. Hasn't been updated since 2015. Okay. ba Yeah. it's It's almost a million words. Holy shit. yeah Yeah. The chapters were so long and like, I would just read on my phone and like you just scroll, scroll, scroll. Like, but I love it. You guys know what the longest running fan fiction is, right?
00:23:23
Speaker
It's like an F1 one, right? It's an F1 one. Yeah. That's so funny. ah How did Jared know that? That's a good question. yeah yeah if He's the one that told me about it. Let's check his search history. I saw i saw a TikTok but that was like, ladies, go to your man's phone, go to the app store and type in Grindr. And if it says If it has the cloud. The cloud, yeah. it's beenowment That's so funny. yeah
00:23:51
Speaker
oh Yeah. Anyway. Okay. So the places that you can read fanfiction. YouTube, like I've said, I don't know if if people still do that. Honestly, it's like YouTube has evolved so much. This is before you had like creators um on YouTube that people were doing this fanfiction.net, which I personally think is like a very outdated website, but it still exists. It's like it's like archives now at this point. Yeah. um And then you have the holy grail of fanfiction, which I think a lot of people got introduced to fanfiction on, which is Archive of Our Own. um And then if you were like, if you had an author that was just amazing, they would cross post and they would put their stuff on both Archive of Our Own and fanfiction dot.net.
00:24:32
Speaker
tumblr is a big place to read fan fiction and then lastly the one place that i never ventured into was wapad because wapad was more like original stories that people were writing and then um more of the like celebrity your name like self insert like you i know so many people that grew up reading like One Direction like they read after when after was still on Wattpad like um ano yeah so and then like you could make the covers and like it's just so funny what we used to do with the internet like we should not have been unsupervised
00:25:07
Speaker
you know I'm like shocked I didn't read any Twilight fanfiction like I was so obsessed with them like I would make like little edits on picnic and then replace the cover art on Music on my iPod with like edits that I made it like Bella Did you read Fifty Shades of Grey I mean, yeah, in high school. So like, and I, yeah, so I've read stuff that got turned into like published works or whatever. But yeah, I don't know. It just, I can't believe I never realized my consistent. Also, Q.B. Tyler, don't quote me on this. I don't know if she wrote Fifty Shades fan fiction or Fifty Shades, I think was like a jumping off point for her to get. I know it was a jumping off point for her to get into like writing and like obsessed with romance herself because I've heard her talk about that. I don't know if she wrote it, but that's I love when that happens when like
00:25:58
Speaker
I mean, that's what happened with Cassandra Clare. She was writing more instruments was Harry Potter fanfiction and then got turned into original work. And now people write fanfiction based off of her original work. There are 16,000 shadow hunters fanfics on our archive of our own currently. And it helps that there was a TV show ah and a movie. So like people coming in from different sides, but yeah.

Fanfiction Terminology Quiz

00:26:19
Speaker
Kinder, do you want to do your little game thing? Yes. Okay. So since we established that Brandy did not read a lot of fanfiction, um, has not read a lot of fanfiction in her life.
00:26:28
Speaker
I wrote down a list of terms and I'm going to read them and I want her to take a guess at what they mean and then I will say what they mean if she doesn't get them right. um I think you'll get a lot, right? Yeah, I think you'll probably get a lot. Yeah, it's pretty common. Like I think it's a common terminology, but we'll see. Okay. Starting off, I think this is super easy. A U. Ultimate universe. Correct. Ding, ding, ding. Now this is for the old folks. Women. I don't know what that means.
00:26:59
Speaker
Um, usually people would write lemon or lemons if there was going to be smut in the fan fiction. Oh, just like as a code word. Yeah. I don't know where it started because it it predates me how the term originated, but yeah, people just would say lemons. Um, cannon divergence.
00:27:20
Speaker
Does that just mean that they're changing cannon? Yeah. So like they'll usually pick a point in the story and they'll say everything before this happened. Everything after this, I'm changing. Yeah. So like the ones where like the Harry Potter fix where they lost the war, like everything that happened. except Well, that's kind of. Yeah, that's. ah Yeah. I'm not an Harry Potter fan fiction. It's its own thing. Like, yeah. Don't don't don't come for me. OK. Crack ship.
00:27:52
Speaker
Is that just like insane ships like that? Yeah. Yeah. The one in Victoria's that you would see was like anytime it's so gross looking back, but it would be like anytime a character would be shipped with like psychowitz with who was like their teacher.
00:28:05
Speaker
Oh, OK. Yeah. um And I always took crack ships to be like jokes, but some people take them very seriously. And also some people are just writing it to be like very silly. Like, think of the people that write those novellas that are like, you know, falling in love with like a refrigerator. Oh, yeah. Like that to me is the equivalent of people writing crack ships. OK. It's a little unserious. Yeah, it's meant to be. but But again, some people do take it very seriously. So no offense to those people. Yeah. um OTP.
00:28:33
Speaker
I learned that one from the Addictive Series. That means one true pair. Yeah, once you pairing yeah pairing. Okay. That's like people who are soulmates, right? Yeah. Well, it's like your couple that you fight for. So it's like oh you have like your OTP. So like your OTP would be just whoever your favorite, like your OTP Daisy Christian, like OTP. Yeah. I on, on Tumblr, my Tumblr, I had a lot of OTP tags for my favorite couples. So yeah. Got it. Um, one shot.
00:29:05
Speaker
my fa That's just like a singular story that's pretty short, right? Like not like ongoing chapters and stuff like that. Yes, it's usually just like one chapter. and It can be pretty long, but it you're not going to get it's only be one chapter. around So yeah, it's I feel like in fan fiction terms, we would compare that to a short story. One one and done. Flashfic. Yeah, I don't know what that is.
00:29:35
Speaker
Um, it usually just means that it's really short. The author just wanted to write something and put it out. It's usually like a single scene. Um, it can be multiple scenes, but it's really short. It's not meant to be long because one shots can be however long you want it to be, but flash fix means, okay. You can usually read this in like a few minutes and get it. Okay. Got it. Um, this, I feel like it's easy prompt.
00:29:59
Speaker
Is that just when people ask for like, tell me what to write? This would happen a lot on Tumblr where like you would have an ask box and then um people give them a prompt and then it'd be like, write a fanfic where they have to use a blue pen and then like it would revolve around the blue pen. Okay. Yeah. ah yeah i have This one you'll know. Y slash in.
00:30:21
Speaker
your name. Yes. I did not know what that was for so long. And I would see so many jokes on to talk about people being like, yeah, well, I was like, what the fuck? And it was like always like people being like, oh, I'm going to the Harry Styles concert tonight. Can't wait to like YN and like make eye contact and get pulled on stage. And I was like, what does that fucking mean? Yeah, I like had to Google that one. OK, only a few left. Drabble. but Oh, my God, I have no clue.
00:30:50
Speaker
Drabble is a fan fiction that is no longer than 100 words. Oh, it's just like, oh, OK. Yeah, I would say he's a lot more on Tumblr. But yeah, it's I mean, because a lot of fiction writers are writers just trying to practice. So like that would be a really good exercise of like, I'm just going to write a travel. And then that would get into like people combine like prompts and travel. So then, OK, write a travel about. Whatever. OK, FIM slash.
00:31:19
Speaker
Femme. Femme. Femme Kayla's cheeks turned red. I have no clue. um Just sapphic. Oh, OK. Yeah, <unk> usually explicit sapphic. Got it. Fluff. Just like cutesy stuff. Yeah. OK. Because there's a lot of inks. The fan fiction to me, that's that's how I grew to love it, like.
00:31:45
Speaker
Anks, hurt, comfort, pick my couple, click save. Okay, two more. Headcanon. Is that just like when you make up your own can like just like the same characters, but like nothing from the books is real? Well, or no books can be. It's like little things that you believe to be real without being explicitly told. Oh, yeah. yay Yeah. Like they don like when we talk about like, oh, like Jonah and Khaled definitely like did this or whatever. Like, yeah, yeah head cannon, right?
00:32:18
Speaker
Or um yeah, I'm trying to give like another one. Oh, like Pharoah is a bad painter. That's a headcanon. We've never been told that she's a bad painter. In fact, I think we've been told the opposite. But and no one agrees. And then last one is OCs. Original characters. Yes. You look pretty good.
00:32:41
Speaker
Thank you. And like I said, like if you would have asked me that before entering like online bookish spaces, I would have known none of that. So um yeah, a lot of that is just like contextually figuring it out from when people do talk about fanfic. Yeah. Good job. Good job. Thank you. I also, I actually think I learned OC from my favorite fan artists.
00:33:04
Speaker
They'll be like, Oh yeah, this is my OC I've been working on blah, blah, blah. Yeah. Yeah, fandom harmony is truly the best when like you have a fandom that has really good artists, really good writers, um gift makers, like stan accounts. It's just it's a great community. I love that. Yeah.
00:33:24
Speaker
Yeah, I do feel like I missed out a little bit. I know it's not too late, but I don't watch very much television, so I feel like I would have to read book fic, and I wonder, I don't even know if I'd be able to find something where I'd be able to turn around. There's probably some Bravo fan fiction out there. I just don't know how completely you feel. Those are real people. I know. Yeah, that'd be weird. Yeah, I don't read fan fiction now, but it is fun to look back on it. After my fan fic days, I was more into tumblr and tumblr fandoms and um i my tumblr still exists but i will never let anybody see it um it makes me so mad have you really what we made a deal no fair no fair oh maybe even though kinder didn't technically complete the deal but it brandy it was hard it was hard i had what did i had what was the she was supposed to watch she was supposed to watch friday night lights which she did not do i watched half of a season
00:34:20
Speaker
I'll watch Friday Night Lights to see your Tumblr. OK. There you go. OK, anyway, but I did something else and said and like I can't remember what you did. Yeah, I can't remember what it was anyway. but um But it's something that Kinder had been like bothering me for years about seeing. So we finally made that deal. My Tumblr was I used to make like I would make the the gift sets. I would be one of those people that would make those and post them. She's a coder. Yeah, I like coded my own theme. Like asked me to do that now. I can't. I will never be able to do that now. But I was like, I should have gone to like
00:34:55
Speaker
School for that. I don't know but yeah, I was very old days tumblr had porn I actually did not I actually never had a Tumblr account. Like I dismissed that. Yeah, you guys, I feel like I wasn't an internet kid. Like I was not, but I was like, it was, I don't know. It was weird. Like I also never didn't do fanfic. I didn't have a Tumblr. I was never a YouTube kid. Like I didn't follow like the people who were popular when we were in middle school. I even had a fandom Twitter, like,
00:35:33
Speaker
I had a Twitter account. Yeah, that's all. That Twitter account, I think, is still up, but I don't know. A lot of authors use Tumblr. I know Cassandra Clare's Tumblr is very popular. She spills secrets and stuff on there. And then Katie Katugno has a Tumblr, because she is a fandom girl at heart. I think the fanfic that she wrote was SVU. That's hilarious. Yeah.
00:36:01
Speaker
But also like smart because you can write little mysteries. Yeah. Well, I mean, it's mainly because people have been wanting Vincent and say we're together since the show began 20 years ago or over 20 years ago. Oh, my God. Almost 30. That's crazy. That's insane. Yeah. So let them be honest. So with all of this fanfic talk.
00:36:23
Speaker
We kind of had an idea for this episode that we would kind of dabble a little bit and come up with some ideas of

Original Fanfiction Concepts

00:36:30
Speaker
our own. If we were to write Fanfic now, which me personally, I will never again, but if we were, what would we write? So we each have like maybe an idea or two to share a little bit. Who would like to go first?
00:36:46
Speaker
I think Brandy should go first. She's very excited. yeah yeah okay I think you guys, because, well, hold on, hold on, hold on. I was just really excited doing it. I don't know if it's good. We don't know the fandoms that we chose. We didn't tell each other anything.
00:37:04
Speaker
so I, like I've been saying this whole episode, never read it, you know, whatever. I was stressing out. And then it's funny, Kendra, that you mentioned that you used to read Cruel Prince fanfic because last night I was like, I was trying to think of like books that I could set in like a rom-com world because that was kind of Kendra's suggestion. Like if you can't think of anything, like put your favorite book couple into your favorite rom-com and how would they get out?
00:37:30
Speaker
And I was like trying to do that, and it just like wasn't working. And then I was like, OK. I was thinking, because I feel like the Harry Potter fandom is just like so fucking massive, and there's so many fics in it, I was like, OK, there's been so many written where it's like, OK, actually the bad guys won. So I was like, OK, I'll just do that for the cruel prince. And I started like trying to come up with ideas. I was like, OK, they lost the war. Then what? Blah, blah, blah. And I was not having fun. And then this idea popped into my head. um Completely switched fandoms.
00:37:59
Speaker
It's a Shadowhunters fanfic. You guys, like, Kayla, look. Like, I already showed Kendra this, but, like, I... Okay, so it's Kayla. I'm not gonna write this because I can't write it, like, Cassandra Clarekin, but, like, the idea was so fun to, like, flush out in my head last night when I was, like, in bed.
00:38:23
Speaker
So in order to do this, I have to explain something. that It's not really spoilery because I'm not going to give context around it, but it has to do with this place called Thule in the universe where, yeah, it's basically like an an alternate timeline. Like think Marvel, like alternate timeline, but in this alternate timeline, um,
00:38:45
Speaker
They're they have lost a war so they're things are just kind of like shit down there being run by the big bad Which I'm not gonna say the big bad's name because no spoilers because I'm still holding out hope for Kayla um, but basically I'm I am also gonna explain like what the endarkened is and basically like these people have been like mind trapped basically even like the good guys get mind trapped and turn evil in this alternate universe is like a very vague way of explaining so I want to write about Julian and Emma. And I want to write about like the real Julian from this timeline, getting stuck forever in Thule. Like there's no going home and having to save Thule Emma. And this isn't possible in the actual books. But in my version, he's going to kidnap her from the Big Bad and basically have to survive in this brand new world that he knows nothing about while trying to bring Emma back to herself because he like refuses to believe that she can't be turned back.
00:39:43
Speaker
So, real timeline Emma is going to die. That's how it's going to start real timeline Emma's going to die sad and Julian's going to sacrifice himself what she totally would do and get stuck forever in the world to save his family. I don't know the context around that or why, but he's going to get stuck there.
00:39:58
Speaker
and um the fix is gonna open with him like devastated and grieving and borderline like what's the point of going on like maybe I should just end it um but then he's gonna meet the Thule version of somebody that's really important to him if you know you know yes under your nose yes um and he's gonna realize that like life is worth living here and that he has like a purpose with a rebellion in Thule so everyone's under the impression that Thule, Emma and Julian are both dead so like Julian being there is kind of like crazy because Thule Emma and Julian, everybody thinks they've died in this war. And a couple weeks after the rebellion, he's gonna find Thule Emma and he's gonna, she's gonna be shocked because Thule Julian was killed. And she's gonna know that this isn't her Julian. So they're gonna like start to fight and she's gonna like
00:40:45
Speaker
actively try to kill him and he's going to restrain her, which LOL would never happen in the real books because she's so much stronger than him. um and But then he's going to kidnap her and I think I would like to do like a dual POV so that we can see Emma like lost in her head and like trying to find her way back to herself and like slowly like regaining her runes and her memories and all that stuff. But Julian knows that he can't bring her back to the rebellion compound because they'd want her dead because like The Undarkened cannot be saved. That is like, that's canon. um So they're going to be like hiding in an abandoned house. I'm thinking like the old Institute perhaps, um memories everywhere. And here's where we're getting some like captor captive moments, you know, but it's so much more layered because they both know each other, but they don't actually know each other because these are like alternate reality versions of them.
00:41:33
Speaker
And so they're never leaving Thule or whatever, but Emma is like slowly, slowly becoming trustworthy again. So they're going to have to go back to the rebellion for some reason. And they're starting to feel safe again and like weirdly falling in love, but they're feeling ah all this guilt because this isn't their Julian and Emma. This is like alternate reality Julian and Emma. So it feels like kind of icky to be falling in love with somebody that's like not their Julian and Emma.
00:41:56
Speaker
Um, but yeah, I was picturing it like at least one scene. You guys know that scene from Grey's Anatomy where Owen's like choking out Christina. Oh, yeah. Yeah. I want like at least one scene like that. Oh, at the scene of the crime. Yeah, exactly. So I want Julian waking up with like Emma choking him to death. And he's like, well, like I guess if I have to die, like at least I'm going to die looking at Emma. you know um But then she snaps on it. He would say that. That's right actually insane. Right? So I think the plot twist would be that like this is his Emma. The little Julian and Emma did actually die. And like somehow, like when she died or was killed, like we didn't see her body or something like that.
00:42:34
Speaker
So this is like the same timeline them, and they're both stuck in the wool for the rest of their lives. um But they can never go home. So now they're time to like adapt to the reality of like having to live here and time works differently in the wool. So like when Emma's body landed here, she got got by the big bad and and darkened. So like that part is still realistic and whatever. um I would write two of my faves in there helping with the rebellion. And then I don't want all the indarking to be able to be saved. Like I don't want like the answer to be love. But I think like having like that parabatai rune and also like romantic love, which like nobody else in the universe really has besides Julian and Emma would be the reason for it. So yeah, that's my thick. Slay. Brandy, I think I mean, you put a lot on too. I think you should write it. Or I mean,
00:43:25
Speaker
There are 16,000 Shadowhunter fics on AO3. They probably exist out there. I know. I should have looked to see like what the top pairing was. Noah, I think I know. I think it's Magnus and Alec. Aw. Yeah, yeah. Oh, I'll cry. I feel like Cassie writes her own fanfic of them. Anytime there's like short stories, she's like, <unk> they're happy. They're in love. like And that's like the best part of having an author that is in fandom, because they know what fans want. like
00:43:55
Speaker
Anyways, Kayla. Wow. No, I was just, you put a lot of thought into that. I did not. You guys, I skipped like paragraphs in my notes out because I was like, this is going on for too long. Like I have like seeds right in my head. Last night was so fun. I understand why people get so into it. Mine are literally singular lines, but the main thing that I wanted to talk about is I got permission to share this because i rany I don't even think you know about this, actually. um This was something that happened when Kendra and I very first became friends, which was when Kendra read The Simple Wild. um And well, actually, I think this note that we have
00:44:37
Speaker
came about when Running Wild was released. Do you know about this? I don't know about the note, but I do know the way that you guys would sit and like write little. OK. Yeah. So it's and yeah. So this isn't necessarily like I mean, I guess this this applies to what we're talking about, like writing our own fanfic. But Kendra and I.
00:44:55
Speaker
have a shared note that, I mean, it hasn't been updated since Running Wild came out, but we have a shared note where we would write all these little head cannons about Jonah and Calla specifically or their family. that so funny That's the reason I use that as an example when Kendra asked me, do you know what head cannon is? Cause I knew you guys did this. Yeah. So we would just write all these like little things about, about them. Like, um, I'll share, let me see if I can like find one that I can share because I'm not going to mind you. This started in DMS. So like before I even had Kayla's number, what do you think John and Callie would do today? Yeah. Then because so we would just like voice memo back and forth, like different things. And um looking back at these, I'm like cringing a little bit, but, you know, it was still fun. Like it was fun. Like that's so cute. It's a little cringy. Let me let me I'm like trying to find one that's not horrible to share.
00:45:50
Speaker
Share them all. Share them all. We're so obsessed with like, I mean, we still are, but like, it's calmed down. um I some of these are really bad. I need screenshots in our group. Oh my God.
00:46:05
Speaker
Just don't be a verbatim, just paraphrase whatever we have here. Whenever Jonah and Cala visit Toronto, Diana always convinces them to have a double date and enjoy a night out on the club. Drunk Jonah is a dancer and very touchy. Cala records all this and he ah all of his dances and posts a couple, you know which he hates like when she whenever he or whenever she posts him. She loves when he lets loose a bit in situations that otherwise would make him more uncomfortable. Oh, um they adopt a puppy from Tyler and Marie.
00:46:33
Speaker
Jonah wasn't for it at first, but Calla want him over. The puppy is very protective of baby Ren Yeah, there's like we like sent them to Vegas cuz like that's where he like it's from. Oh, yeah. originally Yeah. Yeah yeah and Norway there's a Norway one to where they baby render Norway didn't his mom Yeah. It's okay. Keep going. I want more. but no like no i You want to see the note? Here's the note. Hang on. It's long. It's really long. Okay, so Jonah Callahead cannons. Look at how long.
00:47:09
Speaker
She's still scrolling. It's still going. Yeah. Oh, my God. Anyway, again, a testament to like how much you can love something like that's why I like.
00:47:21
Speaker
If I was an author, I personally would never, I would be joyous if anyone write wanted to create fan fiction based off of my work. Like, that means you, like, I created something that you love so much. Like, that's like, you don't want to like oh yeah. You guys should have shown this to K.A. Tucker. No. Sweet. now no Never. Never.
00:47:40
Speaker
I'm okay, thank you. You guys are so fucking cute, you guys. I have Jonah never misses a story time with baby Ren, even if he has to do it over FaceTime ah when he's away flying. Kyla loves that he shares his love of reading with their daughter. I'm going to end parentheses. Why does this sound really corny? But I remember that he loved reading. Yeah, he did. He loved reading yeah books. He had books anyway. So there's there's that that I wanted to to share. But in the archives.
00:48:10
Speaker
Yeah, and it's gonna stay there um But like other things that like I would probably write if I you know was if I was reading the same way that I You know are reading the same stories that I was reading back then which first of all I should not be as a middle schooler, but you know if I was Um, I would write a lot of fluff pieces because that's what I wrote a lot when I did something with the chance fan fiction So I would probably write not only would I write like Jonah Callas stuff, but I would probably write fluff pieces about like Random town shenanigans around walk-on with Daniel and Alexis. It's like random things that they like have to deal with like crazy stories about um Alexis at the the satellite hospital I would also probably write
00:48:57
Speaker
an AU with, now listen, but before we before I say this, I know, we've talked about this a hundred times, I know Julian and BJ together forever, always and always and always, I get that, but I would probably write an AU where Julian and Magnolia end up together because you know, in another universe, I bet they exist in the universe. Anyway, those those are probably the things that I would I would write. sola um If I was doing Daniel and Alexis, and they had fan fiction out there, their first time. like We never got to see it. So true. What happens after the the tomato soup and grilled cheese? Yeah. like that's that way I'm surprised. there probably have There have to be fics out there that have that already. Someone's written it. Abby's probably written it, and it's just sitting on a hard drive. Wait. Can I share something, actually? Yes.
00:49:51
Speaker
um this is just if you didn't hear. um There was a Instagram Live several months ago with BK Boris and Julie Soto and Jessica Joyce, and of course I was tuned in. And Jessica Joyce, she publicly admitted this, so I think it's okay to share this. She said this on an Instagram Live. So she said that Noelle's brother, whose name is completely, like I'm blanking on, Noelle's brother from- Noelle from U of U. Yes, Noelle from U of U. There were a couple of hints
00:50:27
Speaker
um throughout the book that he was like not fully straight he's a queer man um and like looking back on the reread I definitely caught those but she said that she has written a threesome scene with that man and other people and I'm like what who are the other people I don't know. So I don't know if it's his like, cause he and he's, oh God, he's dating a ah girl. He has a girlfriend and you with a view. So like, I don't know what this threesome scene is. So like, of course, when she said that, like the chat was like blowing up and, and everything like that, they were like, what? Anyway,
00:51:02
Speaker
anyway so Jessica Joyce is writing her own fan fiction of her characters. You know what I mean? So like, there you go. Yeah.

Kendra's Fanfiction Ideas for 'Magnolia Parks'

00:51:12
Speaker
um Okay, so, obviously, Kayla has now outed us as Jonah Callahan fiction writers. the notes up um Our FBI agents get a kick out of it. so You have those. They were like, what the fuck are they doing? Yeah. And then I. OK, so I would write Magnolia Parks fan fiction. I think I looked it up. There are seven fan fictions right now. yeah Magnolia Parks. They're all Daisy Julian Christian centered. There aren't really any of that focus on Magnolia, which I think is a disservice. However, I think Magnolia Parks, if the TV show gets made, that will be a fandom that grows like exponentially.
00:51:54
Speaker
um Good for the fan good for me because I would love to read fanfic of them. There's just so much there I don't know how to say things will feel about it because she's Very odd when it comes to how she reacts to her characters being talked about and whatever but I think it'll I think Hopefully we get a lot. So I would write um a Like think you guys are gonna laugh at me I would write I guess it would be called like
00:52:26
Speaker
like a what if of like what if Christian and Christian actually realized his feelings for Magnolia and then got to date her all of high school and so then that like wipes out everything that happened with her and BJ in high school and in this one they would break up Christian Magnolia would break up after high school and I would make him a boxer because we know he love who loves to fight y'all love to run remind me He loves to fight. So then I would make him a boxer and that takes him to like the United States. He's doing and MMA and then you flash forward to like i another 25, 26. And during the time that he was away, he and Magnolia ended on relatively okay terms.
00:53:05
Speaker
But after they break up, she does get with BJ because I feel like in no in any universe, no matter who she ends up with at the end, that's going to have to happen. yeah She's going to have to go through that man. yeah um Except their relationship in this one is toxic, but not the like, oh, I feel so bad for them. Toxic. This is like, oh, he's just shooting at her for like shits and giggles. You know, um that's what I would play into. Like the BJ, you thought.
00:53:27
Speaker
was in book one that's real bj that's real bj um and then christian comes back to london like i don't know he gets like a career ending in injury he has to take over the family business and then somehow some way he and magnolia get like swept up again like so i know giddy right it bro like a second chance romantic i just think that would be like so and like it's fun because like That's like the one relationship with Magnolia where like, it's so important. In my words, it's so important, but like, we never really got to see like, we never got to see a lot of it, you know? So I would want, they would end up together. um And in this one, I was like, okay, well, then that means I would have to keep, I don't have to keep Daisy with Rome the whole time. And then I was like, okay, the Julian of it all, because again, I feel like, gross I don't know what I would have to do with Julian in this, but yeah, that's what I would want to do. Or,
00:54:17
Speaker
The second one would be, ah I think it would be really fun if someone wrote a challengers inspired MPU, like love triangle. I think it would work best with Christian and BJ being the tennis players and then Magnolia being the head of it all. The Julian of it, again, I get, I don't know. I had a really hard time coming up with Julian ideas just because I think I love what we got. So I don't want it. I don't want it. Yeah, I'm very attached to that. um So if someone else,
00:54:47
Speaker
Not say I wouldn't read it, but I personally had struggled. But I just think an MPU challenger's Vic would just go off. Like, that would be so much fun. And then we can see BJ and Cushion crack ship. There you go. They end up together. I like it. They do little stuff. Yeah. Wow. That's so fun. Yeah. The potential for Magnolia Park's universe fan fiction is through the roof. Right. There's so much Jonah

Wrap Up and Recommendations

00:55:11
Speaker
fan fiction. Oh, my God. I would. I used to love fan fics where it was like the It would be like five times, like five times Beck got it wrong and the one time he got it right. Like there were so many fanfictions that would like follow us. You would see like the same thing play out. And I would do that with Magnolia Parks with Magnolia, like three times Magnolia got it wrong. The one time she got it right. But it would be like all the guys that she could have dated. And I would make John one of them because I just feel like John doesn't get enough credit or Jonah Daisy. You read hard for Jonah.
00:55:42
Speaker
Jonah Daisy, love triangle, Christian Jonah Daisy. See, it's hard and right now, but if you throw out some of the stuff that you know, yeah. Oh my God. Summer I turned pretty. Summer I turned pretty, Magnolia Parks.
00:55:56
Speaker
They're just that group is so incestuous that there's just so yeah many yeah options. Yeah. And um if you're a long time listener, you know that my Rose Lowe fanfiction one day, listen, their banter is just too good. If you add sex into the mix, it just I would send them off to boarding school. Lily just would not be there. Sorry, Connor, are not there. Just them at this boarding school.
00:56:25
Speaker
They're still rich, their families still have their companies, but they're at that boarding school and they are they are and having lots of sex. Yeah. I mean, not boarding school, not boarding school. It would be a boarding college, private college. i see I want them to be adults.
00:56:48
Speaker
but so yeah yeah So many possibilities. but Yeah, everybody yeah um I most likely when this episode comes out will be posting like or sharing either on my stories or in or an in feed post of some of my favorite fan fictions that I think are worth reading. um They're really good. Like, god there's some great Gossip Girl ones, you guys. Like, oh, they're so angsty and fun. And I'll share the Bruce Wayne Felicity Smoke one because that one's just like, it's so good. And then I'll share the most popular aero fanfiction that there is, which is called Forever is composed of now, which is just a work of art. So
