This week Brandon digs into his cellar to share a stout with Tony; Central Waters Cassian Sunset.

Beer Description:
"A bourbon barrel aged imperial stout with local Emy J's coffee, whole vanilla beans, and cinnamon. The flavor profile of this wonderful beer boasts a lush mouthfeel, with just the right amount of creamy spice character to meld with the rich malt and barrel-aged profile."

Thanks to Kevin and Deb Goggin for the theme song.

Previous Episode Recap & Beer Introduction

Windinger. Brandon, how you doing? Good man, how are you? Feeling pretty good. That episode we just did with Ray was great. A lot of good beers. We had three, but two of them were pretty big. That they were. That microphone, sweet drums, is delicious. But...
00:01:05
Speaker
That's not what we're drinking now, Brandon. What are we drinking? We are drinking Central Water Brewing's Cassian Sunset, a stout aged in used oak bourbon barrels with coffee, vanilla, and cinnamon added. Do you know

First Impressions of 2018 Beer

00:01:20
Speaker
what year is it from? This is 2018.
00:01:27
Speaker
Okay. I haven't taken a sip yet, so. I, uh, I swirl it around. I was getting, I think I was getting a little bit of the, cause I didn't rinse my glass, a little bit of the barrel from sweet drums. Yeah. Um, exactly. Um, I got worried originally when just originally, when I,
00:01:44
Speaker
When I say originally, I mean when you read, there's coffee in this beer from 2018. I was like, oh no, please don't give me the dreaded green pepper. And it's not there. This is very pleasant, light bodied.
00:01:59
Speaker
Not a big barrel characteristic. Also, we are coming off of, you know, trying some other beers. Yeah. I get a nice bit of cinnamon. I get the coffee, vanilla accent, nothing like, you know, not a vanilla bomb or anything. It was quite pleasant, my friend. Yeah, I'm getting the same thing. And like, I was worried because there's actually a little more body to this, but there's been a few central water, like bourbon barrel aged beers or like, you know, high,
00:02:25
Speaker
like imperial stouts I think that we've had in the past not necessarily on the show but like this is like this it's got some body yeah it's got a little heat while still being like lighter yeah some of the bigger thicker you know
00:02:43
Speaker
Adjuncted barrel aged stouts like it's it it's like a cola color to it Yeah, the white foam and the head, you know a little tan to it, but not dark There's I'm not getting that weird Metallic bitterness I sometimes get from stouts that especially like Bottles like this. I feel like I kind of get when I have a stout. Yeah overall. I think this is really tasty the cinema there's like a little bit of

It's not burned,

but there's like a cinnamon type heat that I get after I take a sip. Yeah. Does that make sense? Yeah. Uh, the spice is nice though. And that's, that's going to be my new tag, my tagline. The spice is nice. Spice is nice. I don't think I've set next to you or set this close to you in a long time for the podcast. It's weird. Go away. I feel like a guest. Um, but yeah, it's,
00:03:35
Speaker
It's very well done. And I, I'm actually shocked at it. This has been sitting on the shelf for a while and I'm shocked at how well it's held up. I was expecting it to be like really green from the coffee or, you know, just not good in general. And not by any fault of central waters, but the six year old beer. Yeah. You age beers and

Comparison with Other Central Water Beers

00:03:59
Speaker
like you take the risk, but this one's been sitting around for a while and like it's tasty, man.
00:04:04
Speaker
Yeah, I'm trying to think of some of the other central water beers that I've had. I feel like there was a wrong one. I know we've had, we had, because I had, excuse me, I had a ton of them. 16th anniversary one. Oh, yeah. That one was tasty, but like, it started to fall off after a while. I definitely
00:04:26
Speaker
poke my nose into what Central Waters is releasing. Like if I go to Binny's or any other liquor store and I see Central Waters, because they do do a good job. They remind me a lot of like the way New Holland does their bear-laged stuff where it's not like
00:04:41
Speaker
You're not getting a massive barrel flavor but you are still getting barrel aged flavor from these beers. And I would say 9 out of 10 times the adjuncts work and they really kind of shine and they're not like something that's overpowering and it's not like overly sweet or
00:04:58
Speaker
you know,

Visiting Central Water Locations

00:04:59
Speaker
super thick body or super thin. Like you said, we have had some central waters that then, same thing with New Holland's dragon's milk. There's been, I've had some really good dragon's milk and I've had some dragon's milk where I was like, I don't know if that's not, that's not for me. I think they had a rum barely one. And that's what I was confusing. I was not a huge fan of that, but a good choice, man. Yeah. No, this really good like representation of,
00:05:25
Speaker
what central waters should be because I mean, I know they put out great beers and I know that like they do a lot of work, man.

Final Rating & Thoughts

00:05:35
Speaker
And I don't like they're in Wisconsin. We've never been there. Like that's a place we should probably
00:05:41
Speaker
Probably go and visit. Actually, it's something because I'm used to seeing central waters things, like I said, at like Binnie's. Amherst, Wisconsin. Oh, we should travel there. Oh, that's not, I looked it up and it gave me something else. Oh, well, maybe they moved because that's what's on the bottom. No, no, it's something completely. There's two, they have two locations. There's one in Milwaukee. Ooh. And then did you say Amherst, Wisconsin? Yep.
00:06:10
Speaker
Yeah, let's see how far it is for us. If we were to travel there right now, three hours and 20 minutes, baby. Let's go. It's not far from Steven's point. OK. And if we wanted to, we can take the three hour and 45 minute version of the trip. No, we're not doing that. Yeah, it would be great. It would be nice.
00:06:35
Speaker
I normally see their beers when I am just kind of poking around at Benny's Royal Liquor Store, and there are definitely more times than not my interest is piqued. Like, oh, this sounds really good. I want to try this. And going through their tap list right now, like the Mud Puppy Porter, I know I've had that before. I feel like that is something that I've had numerous times from them.
00:07:02
Speaker
The Brewers Reserve series are the ones that I see the most at, you know, Binnies. Like, they've got their regular bourbon barrel stout, bourbon barrel stout, bourbon barrel scotch ale, a Phantasma Cosmico chocolate stout. That's also just a reserve in its Imperial. And then the Brewers Reserve vanilla bean stout. And this is at the... Okay. Yeah, I've heard... Yeah, I think I said that right. But I don't really see their other beers.
00:07:27
Speaker
around like they have like stand there's like IPAs, pale ales, porters, the other one. And maybe I'm just used to seeing the reserve series. I'm not really locking my brain into Oh, that central water. Yeah. And I don't know what we all get. Like, they might be selective what we get down here. But like, I agree. Yeah. Yeah. But this is tasty. I like it for as old as it is. It's good.
00:07:51
Speaker
Yeah. Uh, I'm not, I am not mad at this beer at all. Uh, six years old and still tasting good. Brandon, how many water bottles, water drops are you giving this? How many water drops are you giving this?

Closing & Social Media Shoutouts

00:08:06
Speaker
Um, I'll do a solid four. Yeah. I'm there with you. Uh, I'm, I'm like a, you know what? Four.
00:08:13
Speaker
Especially because it is a six year old beer. Yeah. If this was, man, again, some of these beers that you've aged, um, it'd be great to see what they were like fresh animal. So again, another beer for us to look out for Brandon. Love you, buddy. Love you too, man. We'll see you right next week. Bye. Cheers.
