Introduction to the Podcast

00:00:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome, one and all, to today's Daily Newcastle podcast. My name's Ian Mackay. I'm your host tonight. I am hosting two of my good buddies, Mr Michael Greenclaw. How you do, Michael?
00:00:29
Michael
I'm all good here. How about you?
00:00:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm fine, thank you. And on the other side, Mr Kevin Esther. How are you doing, Kevin?
00:00:38
Kev
yeah I'm buzzing. This is going to be four trips to Wembley this seat this year alone, isn't it? So can't wait.
00:00:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sounds like it, yeah.
00:00:44
Kev
Work that one out.
00:00:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
To everybody watching on the YouTube channel, for some reason, these two have both got kicked out in their black and white Newcastle stuff. I feel a little bit like I'm letting down the team.
00:00:56
Michael
Oh, yes.
00:00:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
But no, if you cut me, I would actually be bleeding black and white. So I think that counts just as much.
00:01:03
Kev
Oh, yeah.

Newcastle's FA Cup Victory Discussion

00:01:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway,
00:01:06
Kev
Yeah.
00:01:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Welcome boys, we are here to review um review Saturday's game against Birmingham City at St Andrews in the fourth round of the Epic Cup, which of course, I know you're watching, Newcastle won that bruising encounter 3-2 and moved through into the fifth round, the draw of which will be made on Monday evening at seven o'clock.
00:01:29
Kev
Proper FA Cup tie.
00:01:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, before we get stuck into the nitty-gritty of the game, and it was, I i enjoyed it, I was
00:01:32
Michael
Ridiculous.
00:01:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
terrified in it But we'll talk about that in a bit. There was a lot of talk beforehand about whether the FA Cup was a foot too far for New South York. Did we really want to get through this game and distract ourselves with another Cup run when we've got a final to focus on in a month's time? and Some really big games in the Premier League to get through because finishing in the top five and qualifying for the Champions League is the be-all and end-all.
00:02:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
and I couldn't really understand what people were saying because I'm very old and the epic stuff has always always been a wonderful competition since I was knee-high to the proverbial black opera.
00:02:07
Michael
Yeah.
00:02:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
My thoughts, as one of our younger members of the season,
00:02:20
Michael
Yeah. Gilly.
00:02:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
What do you think? Was the epic cut-through characters quite that it's actually the most important competition you could go through? Or what did you think?

Impact of Manchester City's Dominance on Domestic Cups

00:02:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is it is it a cut-through bar?
00:02:34
Michael
I think Manchester City have a lot to answer for because they've made the cups feel pretty minor. I think, you know, you go in and, I mean, you look at, before the last 10 years, Middlesbrough were winning cups, Bolton were in the finals, Yad Wiggin, Portsmouth, Birmingham, all these teams getting a cup finals, winning it.
00:02:56
Kev
Millwall.
00:02:57
Michael
Yeah, Millwall, was it 0-2, 0-3?
00:03:00
Kev
Yeah, Man United in the final.
00:03:00
Michael
it's my i yeah I mean, if Oney Mill wouldn't have won, London never would have run would have recovered.
00:03:06
Kev
Could be no other London team's left.
00:03:08
Michael
But, yeah.
00:03:10
Kev
Millwall would have killed them all.
00:03:12
Michael
Exactly. But the last 10 years, because Man City have won them all, well, won a lot. Can't say them all. and Liverpool up there as well. you know it It kind of feels like it's the same teams winning every year and the FA Cup's kind of lost a bit of prestige because of that. I think if you have a run where let's say the likes of Newcastle, maybe Villas, you know you're Nottingham Forests, Bournemouths, Brighton, those teams that play great football.
00:03:40
Michael
but, you know, haven't really got the prestige. If they're starting to win those trophies, then all of a sudden the f FA Cup becomes number one priority again, you know, for mid-table sides at least.

Newcastle's Cup Prospects This Season

00:03:50
Michael
For Newcastle, we do have the League Cup final, we do have the Premier League, but...
00:03:56
Michael
We played up pretty much our reserves yesterday. I mean, Bruno got a shot, 45 minutes to gnarly did. Burn has come off injured. Shores took a knock. So it has it has had an effect, but I think if you can get as far as you can without having to put extra strain on your big, big names, to be honest, EZAC only came on for a minute. Perfectly fine.
00:04:17
Michael
um if you can get to the later stages which we're in the fifth round now there's only 16 teams left most of the big teams are out you can get that far without stressing too many of your big players by playing the likes of no disrespect to birmingham but birmingham bromley etc then why not give it a shout why not go forward why not try and win it because imagine if we made two trips to Wembley and cup finals this season it'd be unheard of for us well
00:04:44
Kev
three actually four semi-finals there isn't it
00:04:49
Michael
finals is I meant final I said final but finals semi-final semi-final shouldn't be at Wembley anyways but that's that's not that's an argument for a different day and I don't want to take over the podcast so back to you guys oh
00:04:51
Kev
sorry mate sorry mate let's get excited i agree i agree
00:05:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's already counted the extra trips to Wembley in August when we'd have to turn up and play at the charity field if we'd won the FA Cup.
00:05:12
Kev
That's my fourth. That's my fourth. Yeah, that'll be four Wembley trips in 2025 alone.
00:05:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's the fourth one, got you?
00:05:17
Kev
Well done, Ian.
00:05:18
Michael
That's another 10 pot trophy, get rid of that.
00:05:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Blimey.
00:05:20
Kev
We'll win that as well, man.
00:05:22
Michael
Yeah, after we've won it.
00:05:23
Kev
Treble. Domestic.
00:05:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway, evan you're sure Kevin, you're showing your hand before asking that same question.
00:05:24
Kev
Domestic. Treble.
00:05:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've just got to observe as you run through the teams that may have a better sense of winning it. We just heard, I just listened to Aston Villa, not Tottenham. I've only mentioned that because they did get through to the final year or two ago against Manchester City and specifically for my Aston Villa supporting friends who listened to a lot of the daily Newcastle.
00:05:45
Michael
yeah
00:05:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
What Was that was still, I think that was still wasn't it? So yeah, anyway,
00:05:57
Michael
Yeah, they're letting a lot.
00:05:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sorry, um, he'll be going off with the viewer.

The Importance of the FA Cup vs League Commitments

00:06:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway, Kevin, have they cooked a serious competition for us or should we just park it?
00:06:06
Michael
Great accent.
00:06:10
Kev
ah absolutely i mean why would you just want to win one cup we're going to win one guaranteed so that's that's in the bag we've got the league cup now so that's uh we're buzzing with that one let's go win the FA cup and look there's only two i'm not going to call them a big six anymore there's only two of a protected six left and that's Manchester City who are having the worst time we could possibly have which i'm loving witnessing in a mid-table team called Man United so why can't we going now be i mean we've got to be up there with our favorites surely now i don't know what the bookies look like we've got for us to play it tomorrow night we've got to be up there it just give us a half decent draw and and we're due good draws if you look at our last two years under eddie howl apart from this season it's been a little bit kind of this season
00:06:57
Kev
and We've had some horrendous draws and always getting drawn away. Now is the time. Now is the time. FA Cup winners, League Cup winners, and we're probably going to finish runners up in the Premier League.
00:07:09
Kev
What a season. Well done, Eddie. Can we just end football now? Can we just end? Football ends now, right?
00:07:15
Michael
without a swimming elephant.
00:07:15
Kev
And it's unbelievable to be a Newcastle fan. That's it. It's done. Just the game's done. We can still play it in Spain, Italy, but Newcastle finish this season. ah FA Cup Champions, League Cup Champions and runners-up in the league. What a time to be alive here. Why would anyone not want to win the FA Cup?
00:07:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah david with you I agree with you and certainly I can't really see anybody who has aspiration. I suppose every time you hear the word aspiration to use, I think that was the Monty Python thing many years ago.
00:07:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Anyone who's got aspiration to playing in Europe, eight matches in the qualifying for the Champions League mid-week, surely we can accommodate the odds. It's the game from the Premier League to be able to get through quarter-finals and semi-finals of the FA Cup.
00:07:56
Kev
yeah good and we've got the two new signings we've got a new right winger who's an absolute house and we've got um and we've got a brand new striker who scored scored again shock horror so two new signings
00:08:00
Michael
and Exactly. like
00:08:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
i mean
00:08:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, apparently apparently he wasn't he was he had to show his passport to be able to get onto the team bus because nobody ever recognized him. But Alan Wilson, you're talking about,

Player Contributions and Injuries

00:08:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
isn't it?
00:08:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the man scored.
00:08:23
Kev
Yeah, scores goal, scores goal.
00:08:26
Kev
Honestly, his record order is unbelievable. If you keep him fit, he'll score. He's like a new sign. And now we should be buzzing about that as well. We've got Wilson back scoring. Will it's got his confidence back and we've got a brand new right winger, but I'm not going to take over the show.
00:08:37
Kev
I'm going to let Ian run Yeah.
00:08:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right. Well, I think that's fair enough. Thank you very much, Kev. Interestingly, I think Isaac's goal is 50th goal, 49th and 50th goal when he got the two against Arsenal.
00:08:50
Michael
Yeah.
00:08:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
they against go no i don't mean that they He's 50, isn't he? He's 50 goals.
00:08:57
Michael
It was against Arsenal, yeah.
00:08:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
And um wilson Wilson's yesterday makes him put him on 49.
00:08:59
Michael
You're right.
00:09:01
Kev
48 or 49. Yeah, 49, yeah.
00:09:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
so We could have a little bit of a ding-dong battle towards the end of the season as to who finishes second to Shira. I'm not taking any bets on that though.
00:09:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think what what we need to do is is actually have a look at who played, how the game went, what we got out of it. We're going to do that in part two, so I'm going to turn to our very own professional sports journalist, Mr Michael Braney's law, to deliver his
00:09:15
Michael
ah
00:09:33
Michael
Thank you kindly.

Team Selection and Strategy for Birmingham Match

00:10:07
Michael
about Zencaster. And for those after the weather, shock, it's raining in Newcastle.
00:10:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, it's bold. Thank you, Michael. Thank you, Michael. Part two. The ah the team that was picked. and I guess it was fairly obvious Pope was going to come in for Dubrakka.
00:10:28
Michael
Yeah.
00:10:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
If you ever faced my Liberamento, that was fairly standard. Very, very pleased to see that Botman's not ripped, and Shah got a rest, and he played Emile Crath.
00:10:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Enelcrash is an excellent centre-half for a fullback who does not get to play anywhere near as many minutes as I think he deserves, because in my view, Eddie doesn't use his score to fix his first team and then fills in if anybody gets injured, which ah which I think I've been critical of. But Enelcrash played from the start yesterday. Target coming in for Hall gave him a rest. That was all fairly expected.
00:11:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
A bit of a shock in midfield when Bruno lined up with Willock and Miley, because I thought all three of them was how injured, but I thought both Tannali and Damaris would be given a rest.
00:11:09
Michael
Yeah.
00:11:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Quite clever just to give them half a day in each.
00:11:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then what a first ever forward line of Willock down the left wing, Azula down the right wing, and Callum Wilson up front, which was British.
00:11:27
Michael
Yeah.
00:11:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway, would you have done anything different, Kevin?
00:11:44
Kev
I would have liked to have seen Bruno rested, but I don't think we could have, unless you play Willak as a centre midfielder and bring in someone like a Senussi, but I mean that's way too much of a gamble away from home against a team who were clearly well up for it.
00:11:57
Kev
Um, but yeah, actually, I really, when I saw the team, I thought, yes, like there's a lot of rest happening there for our first team players.
00:11:57
Michael
yeah
00:12:05
Kev
Um, I was actually a bit apprehensive about seeing Callum Wilson, but I am obviously Callum Wilson's biggest fan. I love the type of striker he is. I love how he plays. I love watching him. I love everything he's done for us. But I was just like, oh my God, when Birmingham were getting physical, I thought, Wilson's going to be the one to go here.

Birmingham's Physical Gameplay Tactics

00:12:21
Kev
He's going to get chucked into a sponsor board and he's going to be out with a broken back for about 10 weeks.
00:12:21
Michael
Yeah.
00:12:26
Kev
And I was just like, please bring him off. Please bring him off. But he survived. He got through and he obviously got a goal, which is what Callum Wilson does. And but yeah, I think lineup wise, I was very, very happy.
00:12:36
Kev
Personally, I would have liked to have seen people like sinucy on the bench, but I guess, I mean, maybe we had two goalkeepers on the bench. We had the breath going ready. Maybe just give the breath of a night off completely and maybe put someone like a sinucy on there, but he probably wouldn't have got on anyway.
00:12:51
Kev
Cause it was very, very close all the way through.
00:12:53
Michael
Yeah.
00:12:53
Kev
And obviously we we had a nightmare start as well. Didn't we leave?
00:12:57
Michael
Yeah.
00:12:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, there was a young lad on the bench from the under 18s, I think, not even from the under 21s, leave.
00:13:03
Michael
Yeah.
00:13:04
Kev
yeah
00:13:05
Michael
Yeah.
00:13:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
I guess if we'd gone four at half time, he might have got the last 20 minutes, but he's probably just letting them experience the match day around the 13 squad, which is but is okay.
00:13:09
Kev
go on yeah
00:13:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Michael, did you like the look of the ah lineup?
00:13:25
Michael
Yeah, I thought, to be honest, the one thing that worried me slightly was having the two strikers.
00:13:30
Kev
Yeah.
00:13:30
Michael
um I didn't quite know how Osula would work on the right.
00:13:33
Kev
Let it go.
00:13:34
Michael
To be honest, apart from missing an absolute sit-out, which we're not going to talk about, he actually, exactly, ah exactly, he got two assists and honestly, he was actually really good on the day.
00:13:39
Kev
It was an assistant. Fucking listening.
00:13:47
Michael
So the only position I was slightly worried about ended up being one of the best players on the pitch. So it shows that I know really.
00:13:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Yeah, it was just going into the first half. It was a bit of an inauspicious start.
00:14:03
Michael
Yeah, dreadful.
00:14:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Given that we're a team that has only conceded once all season from a corner, it was a bit of a shock to be won behind after 40 seconds from a corner. But I guess that there is ah an explanation because that was something we made it back for, never sort of played together.
00:14:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
But after that, I thought we but we did quite well. I thought we we played ourselves back into it. One thing which I hadn't realised we would need to do would be to roll our sleeves up, get our armour set plates on and actually fight our way back into the game.
00:14:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Those Birmingham lads were a little bit rough, weren't they, Michael?
00:14:44
Kev
little bit, Jesus, chuck two of all players into the sponsor board which to be honest I think if it wasn't against Newcastle I'd be watching thinking oh this is a proper cup tie, get in, what ah what a brilliant watch but then actually I'm um'm watching it as Newcastle fan thinking please don't injure Shaw, please don't injure Byrne, please keep Caron Wilson fit and I'm thinking right referee needs to get a hold of us now so
00:14:47
Michael
ah'll be honest
00:14:57
Michael
ah
00:15:08
Kev
Then to be honest, let's face it, if Burnham tried to go toe-to-toe with us, even with that lineup, they weren't going to get anything. So I guess they had to do their best to try and get something. um But yeah, it was a little bit over the top.
00:15:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:15:21
Kev
ah But I do understand it.
00:15:21
Michael
That's a thing. To start off, the first 15, 20 minutes of the game, they did go toe to toe with us and they were the better team. When it was a football match, Birmingham were the better side.
00:15:33
Michael
It's when they took inspiration from Tom Brady and went, you know what, we're going to play American football now. Super Bowls at the weekend, we want to partake.
00:15:40
Kev
Yep.
00:15:41
Michael
And then just start shoving our players all over the pitch. It was when it became an American football game that, you know, it got a bit scrappy and Newcastle actually got two quick fire goals because Birmingham was so bothered about taking our players out of the game that they didn't forgot to defend.
00:15:57
Michael
And I'll be honest, it took a cup tie where at the start of it, I was sitting there going, going to be a difficult one. um I'm not really all that up for a bar. I'd love it if we got some. To the end, when Willick scores the winner for 3-2, I'm ecstatic because they were so dirty and I can imagine it's exactly what teams think when they come to St James's Park like we on Wednesday against Arsenal. I mean we played them off the park so maybe not but the couple in the years before when we've used the old dark arts and imagine that's what teams have thought but
00:16:29
Michael
It made it a lot more of a passionate game for me, should I say.
00:16:30
Kev
Yeah. We use dark arts, but we don't WWE body slam people in there. I don't know, sponsor boards. I don't think anyone's ever felt that about Newcastle, but yeah, we was just shopping people at this point.
00:16:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
There was a fantastic it was a fantastic American football tackle on Willick, wasn't there, by Clara, I think he was, who you could see Willick was past him in a way and he just sort of turned and ran the sideways to be able to take him out of a proper linebacker move.
00:16:42
Kev
I'm like, what's happening?
00:16:45
Michael
Willough. Yeah.
00:16:47
Kev
Yeah.
00:16:48
Michael
Ridiculous.
00:17:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:17:00
Michael
yeah
00:17:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I guess, you know, as you take care of, that's the way to remain competitive when they haven't spent, what is it, 250, 300 million on the players.
00:17:10
Kev
yeah
00:17:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
We didn't have all of those on the pitch, but I mean, we are that squad now.
00:17:19
Kev
Yeah.
00:17:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
So then we get into the second half of what a fantastic goal, by the way, for their equalizer was.

Second Half Key Plays and Newcastle's Performance

00:17:25
Kev
Oh, great strike.
00:17:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've never really seen a shot hit as quickly as that for many years.
00:17:26
Michael
Yeah.
00:17:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
And what it brought home to me, by the way, and again, I think this is another bit of poison that's been introduced into the game by teams that are led by managers such as Pep Guardiola.
00:17:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
People don't have a shot from outside the box pretty much these days, do they?
00:17:46
Kev
Yeah, shoot more.
00:17:48
Michael
yeah
00:17:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
They want to retain possession and pass it backwards and forwards and backwards and forwards. And it just shows if you buy a ticket for the lottery and you hit it right, you can score. to the point where the opposition fans are just dumbfounded to and well, yeah, that's gotta count.
00:18:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Probably should count as two the way you hit that one.
00:18:04
Kev
Yep.
00:18:05
Michael
Yeah.
00:18:06
Kev
Yep.
00:18:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely wonderful, wonderful goal.
00:18:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Big switch at half time and I think this was the critical switch for us to get the control that we needed in in the second half. Maris comes off, Finale comes on. I think Denali coming on certainly improved the performances of Miley and Longstaff alongside him.
00:18:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think we had a far more control in the second. Not total control. Obviously, it took us a while to get ahead. And I know that they had one or two good chances. They tend to forward miss a header that it really should have at least had on target.
00:18:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I felt a far more relaxed, what thing had to play out the last 20 minutes, whatever it was, with the 3-2 lead. than I had done by a defender 2-1 lead at the end of the first half. Anything else to add on how that second half went, Michael?
00:18:44
Michael
Yeah.

Midfield Players' Contributions

00:19:01
Michael
I think it's it's one of those where I think when you look at the goals scored in early corner and then their goal, we actually defended probably a bit better than you give credit for. But again, the main thing for me was just how rough they were. That 11 we put out was the most injury prone 11 that has ever been fielded in a football match. And it was terrifying. But I do have to give a big sort of shout out to Joe Willick. I've slated him more than anyone I feel. But He was one of the only players that, and let's be honest, very injury-prone. That's a game that if an injury-prone player, if he takes a step back and doesn't go into the 50-50s, et cetera, he's sitting there going, you know what? I'm not surprised. But he was one of the only players that take these two goals out of the equation. He was stood up and was counted. He led us through the game, did really well. And to be honest, I've said Willick needed a game to get his confidence back. I think that was probably it. On the negative side,
00:20:00
Michael
Longstaff and Miley. It was probably Miley's worst game for us if I'm completely honest. um From what I'd say I didn't think he was good at all and Longstaff I think. What can I say about Longstaff that hasn't probably already been said on socials but he had a poor game as well and I think Bruno wasn't any better when he was on. Tonali was fantastic, as he said. But midfield three was probably where it became more of a 50-50 game, because Iwata was really good. um He played in the central. Kieran Dowell was really good for them as well. Keshi Anderson ah was fantastic. But I think Livrimento handled them really well. so It was just one of those where we just couldn't really seem to do all that much first half.

Overcoming Birmingham's Home Performance

00:20:45
Michael
Second half, I do completely agree. We had a lot more control of the game.
00:20:49
Michael
probably as you say coincides with Tenali coming on but I also thought Jacob Murphy came on and did really well as well so we've got through it we're in the the hat for the next round it was a tough tie it was the biggest game of Birmingham season based off the fireworks before the game which is pathetic but yeah it was a good tie
00:21:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, to be fair to them, they hadn't lost at home since early August or mid-August, and the only time they'd lost at home was through a friendly league side in the Caravale Cup.
00:21:20
Michael
Oh.
00:21:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
So they were always going to be confident at home, and they were red, so it was their Cup Final.
00:21:23
Michael
Yeah.
00:21:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Unfortunately, they've lost it narrowly, never mind.
00:21:26
Michael
yeah Yeah.
00:21:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll just have a little bit of an assessment of what we can take out of this for the upcoming games in part three, but first, umm going to turn you have an e and ask you to do but thedn
00:21:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
don't do it like the cooking bull
00:21:45
Kev
I will do, but just before that, you talk about Birmingham losing their Cup final.
00:21:49
Kev
I'll tell you who isn't losing their Cup final this season. That's Newcastle United. Yay. Anyway, more importantly, the Global Sports Podcast Network is changing the face of football podcasting with dedicated daily content for every Premier League team.
00:22:04
Kev
It includes women's football and it even has a dedicated Premier League wrap up. It also comes in five different languages and this is your one-stop shop for your daily football fix. Find my global sports podcast network wherever you find your usual podcasts.
00:22:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you, Kevin. And have you been, um, nobled by outside forces to say as many things as possible to gink Newcastle in that final this year?
00:22:29
Michael
well.
00:22:33
Kev
lord jensen No No jinxing. We know what's happening this year. It's not happening. I'm telling you. I said it on the... I can't remember the last episode I was on. I forget. I said, this is our year. It just has to be. It is. I'm in blind belief and I don't... No one's changing my mind on this. We are winning that final. Jinx doesn't come into it. Luck doesn't exist. We are, we are winning it. We are winning it this time.
00:22:55
Michael
Remember when Mike Ashley said we make our own look? And then we were dreadful for about five years afterwards.
00:23:01
Kev
Yep. We deserved that.
00:23:02
Michael
This is exactly that.
00:23:03
Kev
Yep.
00:23:04
Michael
Although I will say, I did just open up the betting odds after you mentioned it earlier.
00:23:04
Kev
Now.
00:23:09
Michael
Newcastle are the favourites to make the final of the FA Cup as well.
00:23:13
Kev
Told you.
00:23:13
Michael
so
00:23:14
Kev
Had to be, had to be. There's nobody left.
00:23:15
Michael
five to one five to one Man City obviously favorites then you got Man United and Villa just behind us but if you keep uh if you keep causing us to lose and jigsaw uh if we lose two finals this year i'm blaming you
00:23:27
Kev
I haven't changed stuff yet.
00:23:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
So the law of average is we need a home draw against anybody in round five and then we'll be slaughtered.
00:23:31
Kev
I haven't jinxed it yet. We're not losing any finals.
00:23:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I did see people four-handed and I thought because Liverpool were knocked out this afternoon away at Plymouth, I didn't dream that, did I? That happened.
00:23:47
Kev
That did happen.
00:23:48
Michael
Yeah.
00:23:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Liverpool are knocked out I feel like we have a better chance of winning the FA Cup than we do the Carabao Cup. And when you say luck doesn't submit to it, Kevin, I hope that great luck comes into it on our behalf and very bad luck comes into it on physical behalf. So then I think we've got a chance of beating them. Anyway, well, what's going on about other stuff?

Positives from the Match and Upcoming Games

00:24:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
What I was interested to hear your views on was whether we can take anything out of the performances yesterday in a positive way for the upcoming, difficult upcoming five or six games that we have, culminating in that Paradise Cup final, in a way that after the Bromley game, we couldn't, because nobody really put an advert in the shop window for them to be considered for selection to the first team.
00:24:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think the yesterday's game was different.
00:24:41
Michael
Yeah.
00:24:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
What do you think here?
00:24:46
Kev
And I think we'll definitely because we've seen that you can do it in the Premier League as well. I mean, but we can't forget. I know Birmingham had that amazing home record you just mentioned, but Still a league one team, um ah but we've seen Willak do it in the Premier League before and exactly like Michael said, he just needed a bit of a confidence boost and that's got to be fantastic for him to get two goals and in a, not a new position, but ah ah probably not his favorite position.
00:25:12
Kev
So definitely we've got Willak back, hopefully firing and in good form and ready to go again.
00:25:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:25:17
Kev
So I think that's a big positive. Callum Wilson.
00:25:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, really, and really important, given that Phil Linton might be out for three or four weeks, because we need somebody to flock in on that left-hand side.
00:25:22
Kev
Yeah.
00:25:26
Michael
Yeah.
00:25:28
Kev
Yep, yep.
00:25:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, sorry, I interrupted.
00:25:30
Kev
No, no, all good. Callum Wilson as well. we His goal record at Newcastle United is is ah goals per minute, is is unbelievable. Natural goal scorer, proper old-fashioned poacher is very good at holding it up.
00:25:45
Kev
um Very good at timing his runs. Everything about Callum Wilson, I think, is absolute quality. just apart from his hiss fitness, really, we need to keep him fit. So look, if he can stay fit, he's like a new sign.
00:25:56
Kev
And like ah I said, at the start of a podcast, I think Willak and Wilson being a huge, and I think Asuna was a big positive.
00:26:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. oh
00:26:03
Kev
However, it's against league one opposition. Is he is he really that good? I loved him. I loved the performance on the right wing. I loved his housery. I loved his feet, his scale, his willingness to run.
00:26:14
Kev
His pace is all brilliant. However, has League won his level? I don't know quite yet. He's still got time to work with Eddie. and He did look brilliant, no. And and then my last one before I kind of give it up to to Michael andnewy and you, Ian, I thought Kraft was fantastic. I thought he was a real big positive. We've seen him in the Premier League as well, perform really well. And he's one of them players, I believe, even though he hasn't had the opportunity to shine like some of us.
00:26:41
Kev
that Eddie Howe has just worked miracles with. He's unrecognizable to the MAL Craft before Eddie Howe. This version of MAL Craft with Eddie Howe looks like he could play anywhere and do us ah just do do a brilliant job for us.
00:26:53
Kev
So I'm really excited he's back from injury as well.
00:26:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah and that's important because Dan Burns did something with his coin.
00:27:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're not sure what state that Sven Botman's in. I know he was arrested and they say it's not serious but you know we're away at Man City in six days so if either of those need a further week's rest then I think Crass did something alongside Sharpe.
00:27:01
Michael
Yeah.
00:27:10
Kev
and
00:27:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought they did okay.
00:27:18
Kev
Mm hmm.
00:27:19
Michael
Yeah.
00:27:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Michael, I was going to ask have to give us two, what he's given us four, which left us with not really anybody to talk to.
00:27:24
Kev
Sorry.
00:27:25
Michael
yeah
00:27:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I'm going to ask you specifically, did you think that Nick Polk did enough to displace Martin Nebraska or did he just do enough because he did make one of two fabulous saves to

Nick Pope's Performance Evaluation

00:27:39
Michael
did.
00:27:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
give us a lot of confidence that we've got a fabulous backup keeper sitting on the bench?
00:27:45
Michael
Yeah, I think it's it's one of those where Debraavkar has been decent since he's come in. We have seen a few more of his flaws in the more recent games, I would say.
00:27:56
Michael
Nick Pope. You can't say he's Sean against Birmingham, because there was a few times where it didn't look great. His distribution for the most part wasn't fantastic.
00:28:08
Michael
um But what I would say at the same time,
00:28:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
I will get horrible windy, wet, nasty, foggy, horrible cold day though.
00:28:13
Kev
Yeah, well, come on, he plays, he plays football every day of his life.
00:28:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
everybody Everyone's distribution was rubbish.
00:28:15
Michael
footballs, football.
00:28:18
Kev
How can he not pass a ball like at Bug's life? I like Nick Pope. He's a great keeper, but how do you have a ball at your feet every day of your life? How old is he? 30 odd years, pretty much.
00:28:30
Kev
And still not be able to just chip it in a full back. Come on.
00:28:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, it's got a long leg, so the levers are much more sensitive when they're that long than with normal sized legs, Kevin. I don't know if you're going to believe that one.
00:28:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Michael, anybody else? what about did I don't think Tarvett displays the call, but it looks like he can do a defensive job that's left back.

Player Form and Roles Evaluation

00:28:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
I was quite pleased to see him get the minute.
00:28:56
Michael
Yep. Yeah he was the other one to be honest with me.
00:28:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
And and what was your what was your thought on Osula?
00:29:01
Michael
I thought he played quite well.
00:29:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
see see Does he mean that Deccan Murphy only has to play an hour a game now?
00:29:11
Michael
I wouldn't go that far. But I do think it's one of those where we've been sitting there going, look, we have no options now with Miggy gone. It's Murphy or Bust. It's not Gordon complete over there, obviously.
00:29:24
Michael
Barnes has had a little bit of a cameo there. But I wouldn't mind.
00:29:26
Kev
Children.
00:29:28
Michael
Yeah, Joe Linton could even go over. But I wouldn't mind seeing Osula out there ah because, let's be honest, Harry Cochran, the who played left back, wasn't exactly the most physical player in the world. But what I will say is Osula did run him ragged, in regards to his physicality on the on the wing. And we know how good Joe Linton is on the wing when he can get physical with the full back, who is traditionally around 5'8", 5'9". William Osula up against the right back.
00:29:57
Michael
you know when when when we need to hoof it long a little bit more I think he could definitely fit in there for the last 10-15 minutes of a game and it shows we've got options you know I think Isaac, Wilson and Osula as three stra options at striker most of the time there's not many teams who have three striker options that good and I'm not saying Osula's fantastic he's not he's whistle so we've seen enough this season to know that he's raw
00:30:25
Kev
Klimtus. Klimtus. Yeah.
00:30:28
Michael
But Callum Wilson went fit, Kevyou said it a number of times, he's one of the best in the league, went fit.
00:30:33
Kev
He is. Yeah.
00:30:35
Michael
EZAC is the best in the league, went fit.
00:30:37
Kev
Right, so...
00:30:37
Michael
ah yeah Yeah, if you see it all backlight, we're not winning the league.
00:30:38
Kev
Oh, win the league, Michael. You've just come in. We're all going to win the Premier League as well.
00:30:46
Kev
I mean, look, Kraft.
00:30:46
Michael
ah We will win the league cup though.
00:30:47
Kev
We've got Kraft food. Kraft food, Shaw, Potman and Byrne.
00:30:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, we'll do a cup double. We'll do a cup double, sign two players in the summer and we'll win the league next year.

Conclusion and Future Outlook

00:30:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Does that sound like a good plan?
00:30:56
Michael
Sounds good. Sounds good to me.
00:30:58
Kev
I'll settle for it. It's okay, I guess.
00:31:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, let's stop on that very, very positive note. And Michael and I will keep our fingers crossed that we get to see a fuller to at least 20 minutes of the game.
00:31:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, go on, compared to Miggy coming on at right ah rightw wing, getting a scooter on, exciting, isn't it?
00:31:16
Kev
I think, I think, you know, do you know if you're behind though, you could put Wilson through middle and EZAC out right or out left with Gordon on the other one.
00:31:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Exciting. Anyway.
00:31:23
Kev
You could have Wilson, EZAC and Gordon if you're behind, but yeah, um I don't go too much into it.
00:31:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you very much indeed for joining in, Michael. Very, very constructive comments. I've enjoyed your contribution immensely. Kevin.
00:31:36
Michael
Thank you.
00:31:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
You just talk whatever the hell you wanted and nobody will possibly follow any of your arguments. They think it deluded me.
00:31:42
Kev
and knew up with come
00:31:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
You should be back very, very soon. See you all then.
00:32:00
Kev
I knew that was coming.
