Speaker
Hey everybody, welcome to another episode of Predetermined, a Pro Wrestling Hangout. I'm your host, Garrett Callender, and with me, as always, Chris Miggs. I'm here, Garrett. I watched one wrestling show this weekend, and I've got three next weekend. I'm just excited to be around mittens all the time.
00:00:57
Speaker
Dave so okay yes I forget like you have so much more access to mittens than I do where there's like a good chance that you could see mittens every weekend if you wanted access is a weird word to use but yeah he's there he's I
00:01:16
Speaker
I wasn't even sure, cause this, the, the show I went to the big time wrestling show that we'll talk about with, with Bret Hart and FTR was less of it, less of an indie crowd, much more of a like convention-y crowd. So I wasn't sure if I was going to see Mittens there. He was there. He wasn't front row. He was in the front of the sort of general admission section, which was five or six rows back. Um, but I was online to get a beer and the person in front of me,
00:01:43
Speaker
was like, what's that dude? I was like, Oh, that's, that's Mittens. He's like, Oh yeah, I've seen him everywhere. Wait, what's his name? I was like, Oh, his name is Mittens because the hand things he's like, Oh, Oh yeah. I feel like I see that guy everywhere. I'm like, yeah, once you see it, you can't unsee it.
00:01:59
Speaker
Do you remember, this would have been years ago at this point, and I wonder if you're still alive and going, but there was a guy in St. Louis named Beatle Bob who had the world record for the most concerts ever attended.
00:02:14
Speaker
where he had attended a concert every day for the last like 40 years or something, like mostly in the St. Louis area, as far as I remember. But I remember, you know, I went to a lot of my shows in St. Louis, so I would see him out and about. Do you think Mittens holds this kind of record with wrestling? I don't think he currently does, but I think he could get there.
00:02:40
Speaker
Cause like, you know, I'm thinking of other famous fans. I'm putting that in air quotes right now. Like the dorks that sit in the front row at all of the WWE shows, like there's like guy with maybe his mom or his older girlfriend and green shirt, smiley face guy, whatever their story is, but they only go to that.
00:03:01
Speaker
Right. Mittens is everywhere. Yeah. He's going to, I mean, again, like if there's an indie show in New York, there's a real solid chance you're going to see Mittens there. He was probably, I didn't go to the Outlaw show last Thursday. He was probably there. I mean, I tuned into ICW in LA and he's at that. Mittens is everywhere. It's only a matter of time before we see Mittens turn up in Japan. I am not convinced that there aren't multiple Mittens.
00:03:30
Speaker
It's gonna be great though if you and I go to Japan and we're at like Quark and Hall and like just Mittens is just over there. He's actually a young lion when we get there. He's in one of the six matches before the main show in the black trunks. We might even see him be assaulted by Suzuki. I mean in ICW he took that lemon to the eye spot. It's only a matter of time.
00:04:00
Speaker
I mean, I like him. Did you talk to him? Do you think that you could like sneak in and just gradually become friends as an experiment? So, no kind of experiment that is, Karen. Well, I think the experiment is- My friendship and experiment.
00:04:26
Speaker
Actually, what the experiment is, I guess friendship isn't, but you could end up doing a she's all that thing, where you cut his hair and you take his glasses off and we just find out he's beautiful. But really, you've always loved what Mittens is on the inside the whole time. Sure, we could consider that. We could introduce him to pants. Non-short pants.
00:04:59
Speaker
Does he wear coats in the winter to like? Never seen one, maybe. That's okay. Well, enough about mittens. Come back up later, I'm sure. But there is one thing that up top I need to discuss before I forget. That is this. There's a night of comedy happening.

Comedy and Controversy in Wrestling

00:05:24
Speaker
There is a night of comedy happening in Grubbs, Arkansas. It is $5 for a ticket. And honest to God, I can't tell if this is fake. Like, I thought this was a bit. Because, sir, the opening act, I don't know if you looked at the photo of the opener. Oh, I did. And Chris. He's a puppeteer.
00:05:49
Speaker
Yep. Yeah, he is. And this night's only $5 and who is performing at this show, but it is headlined by Aaron Frobel, who I, I did not know that that was his name, but when I saw the picture, it's like, are you fucking, this is big Mike. Michael Elgin do, which, you know, really, I mean,
00:06:14
Speaker
It kind of makes sense these doing nights of comedy because when taken from a certain perspective, most of Michael Elgin's career is fucking hilarious. That's true. That is, that is true. Like it is like his entire wrestling career is a bit that it was more like an Eric Andre prank being played on all of us.
00:06:37
Speaker
Right, this just very serious man. First, see, here's the thing. I feel like I first started seeing him when he was bald, which if you then go back and watch him with that weird, terrible balding mullet he had, I mean, that's hilarious shit. Like that's a man that wanted you to take him seriously while he was aggressively balding with a mullet. I don't know if I've ever seen Big Mike with hair.
00:07:07
Speaker
Google, Michael Elgin mullet right now. God damn it. This, okay. But yeah, this, this comedy show, I saw a thing for it on Twitter door seven, Showtime, a 19 and up only see here's initially, I was thinking maybe this is Canada, right? Cause isn't the drinking age like 19 in Ontario. That seems reasonable. Right. I'm thinking, Oh, this is, but no, this is in Arkansas.
00:07:35
Speaker
where I have no reason to understand why you couldn't be 18 at this show. I mean, I guess I understand why maybe it was 21 plus or 18 plus, but 19 plus seems really specific.
00:07:47
Speaker
It is very specific, like what's happening at this show? I just remember that there were some allegations against Big Mike. Maybe even proven true. I'll just continue to say allegedly with whatever he did. But I know it didn't have to do with a female that he was training or something along those lines. He was very much banished from the pro wrestling world in the United States.
00:08:15
Speaker
Well, there had been some stuff before that. It was before the Big Me Too movement. It was, I feel like Big Mike was ostracized prior to that. I think the Big Me Too, the speaking out put the nail in the coffin, because I think what had happened was he had defended, it was something to do with him defending someone who had clearly committed sexual assault and the way he behaved. Yeah, it was like a trainee or something.
00:08:46
Speaker
But then even if you just go back, it's one of those, he's one of those guys that you're like, wait, like there was a clip going around of him telling a story of an evening with some groupies on like a Kevin Steen shoot interview thing where you're just like, you're pretty disgusting. And when you're just like, when you're like, oh, okay, yeah, you're a mon, okay. You're a disgusting monster. Okay, got it, got it.
00:09:16
Speaker
He was really an easy one for everyone to give up on. You know, like there's certain people that like, I don't know, maybe there's some guys that like because of their talent, that things like people are more willing to not necessarily forgive, but just like ignore. See, here's the thing about Big Mike. It's not about his talent because he's a perfectly acceptable professional wrestler. The thing about Big Mike is that
00:09:46
Speaker
No fan has ever had an emotional connection to big Mike's work. He is like the definitional like, or mid like early 2010, like indie guy where you're like, well, he did a bunch of moves. People kicked out at two and a half.
00:10:07
Speaker
They popped, they kicked out a lot of finishers. How'd you feel about, do you care about either of these characters? Well, no, I didn't really care who won. You know, like Michael Elgin versus Davey Richards is like the definitional, like who, who, who do you want to win this match? I don't know.
00:10:28
Speaker
It's like, what happened in the match? I think he probably vertical suplexed him at some point. He may- Several power bumps. He's a strong, strong boy. People chanted, this is awesome and fight forever. Did they? At the end of the match, people golf clapped. People golf clapped. God, Derek and I were at a show, I think it was an AAW show in Chicago. And this was after all that had happened. He was gone.
00:10:59
Speaker
He was not on the card that night, and had a surprise appearance, and the crowd very quickly let AAW know, you fucked up by doing this to us.
00:11:11
Speaker
by forcing the crowd to watch this Big Mike match. I think the crowd chanted, fuck Big Mike for the entire five minutes of that match. They quickly ended that match and got him out of there. And I think that AAW ended up issuing apologies. But it's like, go home, go home, just go home. No, literally not just the match. You, Mike, just go home right now. Just get out, get, yeah. But yeah, I want to know now, what is his standup comedy?
00:11:41
Speaker
It's so, yes, that's so bizarre to me, but it's funny that it's happening in Arkansas. The South is really where you can come to see the who's who of the Me Too movement. Like, Zany's Comedy Club in Nashville, Big Mike is definitely gonna be headlining there soon. Like, right after Louis couldn't perform anywhere, he could come here. When Aziz got in trouble, he was here. TJ Miller's here a lot. It is like a place that,
00:12:11
Speaker
No one cares here. It's it's a little upsetting. But yeah, what are his jokes like? Armie Hammer, Armie Hammer is headlining at Kid Rocks next week. Well, since Kevin Spacey just ended his trial, I think he might actually be headlining over at the Ryman. I don't know. Yeah, I don't know what big my I want to find out like what his comedy is, just like what is it about?
00:12:41
Speaker
You can't pop an iota of charisma in the world of professional wrestling. What is going to happen in comedy? Is he a Steven Wright guy? Is he a Todd Barry type? That's part of the thing, is that he's monotone? Or do you think he's trying to tell real
00:13:03
Speaker
like observations in the world of Big Mike, which are going to from if he is in Arkansas, his comedy right now is going to be about being in Japan. You know, real relatable, right? What else is he done? That's all he's had for the last few years. Is he been let go from New Japan? Oh, yeah, he was. The only thing he's been in Japan was for Noah. I'm trying to find nothing. Nothing seems to come up about his comedy.
00:13:34
Speaker
That's because I think that this is, I think this is it. I think he skipped that part where you do open mics for, you know, a year or so, and then get yourself a show. Like he is like, you know, people can't be mad about $5 and there's no way that anybody attending this knows who he is. No. So he is doing an open mic. Same similar time. It appears he's, uh,
00:14:03
Speaker
Yeah. He's, he's at the Wednesday night open mic at the caravan comedy club in Louisville, Kentucky. Oh, that's not $5 cover. 7 30. Yeah. 7 30. That's a, well that was last week. So unfortunately the 19th, you missed it.
00:14:20
Speaker
You missed you missed Aaron Froebel, Zach Bennett, Jesse Johnson, Kelly O'Toole, Nick Higdon, Dusty Carter, Aaron Love, another Aaron, two errands on the same show. That's not great. Chris Raves, Tom Celtic, Byron Davis, Logan Dunbar, Zach Bennett, Brandon Bingham and Samantha Montgomery. It was hosted by June Dempsey. And the special guest was of course, the legendary Grant Volkmar.
00:14:49
Speaker
That is a, that's a banger night. That is better than the best nights that you could have had at like comedy bang bang at UCB. That is a, I, somebody needs to dig up some footage of this guy. Cause I need to see these jokes. Like the thing is, it might not be any worse than Dolph Ziggler's. Like there's a picture of him on stage on his Facebook page.
00:15:18
Speaker
He says, and this is, I swear to God, I am not making this up. This is the caption under his photo of him being on stage. I don't know how, don't know when, but I will make this work.
00:15:34
Speaker
Why is this his only option? Like basically this is him saying, I don't want a regular job. I need to be entertaining for somebody. It hasn't worked the last 15 years. So I'm going to just start fresh on a new, uh, entertainment project. You know, when you've been accused of what he has, the last implication you really want from any of your sentences is I won't take no for an answer. The big Mike never going to stop tour.
00:16:03
Speaker
This might, this is, welcome to the new segment, the putt of the week. Big Mike, congratulations. Oh, Aaron, you're a part of the week.
00:16:14
Speaker
So I am, I'm going to break my own rule here. One thing I was, I've been a dick about this my whole life and I'm about to break that rule to all of you and shame on me. I don't like when people tell me about their dreams. I don't want to hear it ever in any circumstance. Even if I was in it, it didn't happen. I don't care. I would stop people mid sentence and say, is this a dream? I don't care. Just move on. I fell asleep with Ozzy on my chest today.
00:16:44
Speaker
And I shit you not. I had a nightmare about Big Mike Elkin. Because I had before I fell asleep was making a note in my phone. Don't forget to talk about Big Mike on the show tonight. What was the big man doing to you? So in my in my dream, I had hired a cat sitter to come stay at our house while we left.
00:17:11
Speaker
And when the cat sitter showed up, it was Big Mike. But he introduced himself as his real name. And for some reason, I couldn't let him know that I knew who he was. And as he started to realize that I knew who he was, things got aggressive and it kind of turned into some Freddy Krueger shit. And when I woke up, I no joke popped awake with fear.
00:17:41
Speaker
with fear of Big Mike Elgin that he was going to harm me and my family in some kind of like single white female shit in my dream. That's it, that's it. There's no like good end to it, but like Jesus Christ, stay out of my wrestling, stay out of my comedy and stay out of my fucking dreams, Mike. Get out of my dreams, get out of a wrestling ring.
00:18:11
Speaker
get onto a comedy stage? Don't do that. I want people to be able to chase their dreams, but I don't think this is his dream. I think this is a fucking plan B, and honestly, probably more of a plan D. I think there were two things before this we don't even know about.
00:18:36
Speaker
somewhere is a poorly shot indie film on his iPhone, where we could have seen Big Mike's Garden State, you know? Which, you know, probably not as good of musical taste as Zach Braff, but like just as cringy of a movie. It's like, what if Garden State had New Metal as a soundtrack? Five Finger Death Punch fans need love too.
00:19:07
Speaker
Are you telling me there's no corky, sweet, five finger death punch fan? I don't know, maybe he's a Brantley Gilbert guy. See, here's the thing, I was wondering, so one of the things I found out at the big time wrestling show this week, a bunch of people who were around me were all teachers at the same school in Brooklyn.
00:19:27
Speaker
And, um, it's one of those things, you know, it's one of the things when you're going from, especially when there's like lines and stuff, sometimes you just end up near the same people. And also the lines of getting in were just a total mess. So I was just around the same people without just like listening to their conversations. Like I'm just hanging out with them. And one of them was like, Oh, shoot, Joel Gertner's over there. My other friend who's a teacher works with him. He's, he's a gym teacher in bro. He's a teacher now.
00:19:56
Speaker
Wait, who is this? Joel Gertner from ECW. He was the host. Okay. Okay. Okay. He's, I don't, I don't think I knew him by name.

Meeting Wrestling Legends

00:20:05
Speaker
Oh, okay. He was the Dudley boys manager for a long time. Gotcha. Gotcha. And he was just in line. Like pot of ticket was, is it? No, no, no. He was hosting the show. He was waiting for, he was waiting for people to get off the Bret Hart and FTR autograph lines.
00:20:21
Speaker
This show sounded so bizarre. You started texting us from the moment that you got there, which it seemed like, didn't you send me a picture of like an Utz factory, like the chip company? Yeah, we were in a very industrial part of Brooklyn. And when I saw where the cab dropped me off, which appeared to be
00:20:45
Speaker
the accurate place. I just started sending pictures of my location to Garrett and Derek and facts just in case I was murdered. I just wanted someone to have the evidence. The guy actually works with Big Mike and he dropped you off at Big Mike's Big Mike's hostel farm where
00:21:10
Speaker
So yeah, the only way I knew I was going in the right direction is that there were like other people in Bret Hart t-shirts, which by far, I mean, the most popular t-shirt of the night was any Bret Hart t-shirt. I mean, that's not surprising, but just a lot of people. Some people were in FTR t-shirts, but generally they were the FTR t-shirts that were Bret Hart ripoff t-shirts because people, I mean, I thought about that one too. It kind of killed two birds with one stone. So, um,
00:21:38
Speaker
Yeah, but they basically, this was on the third floor of this building, across from the Utz potato chip factory, or warehouse, I guess, right on the water in Brooklyn. So, beautiful view. They had us, got there at like 6.45, doors were supposed to be open at 6.30. It took a solid hour to get in.
00:22:03
Speaker
Why? Because there was like only one person taking tickets and they had like once you got up once you got into the main area you took an elevator up but then there was just like a crush of people just kind of all there was like three or four lines converging into one essentially it was just very bad crowd control don't know whose idea this was I don't think I've ever been to a wrestling show where I had to take an elevator
00:22:29
Speaker
to get to it. I actually didn't take an elevator because it was clear that was going to be a long wait. I took the stairs, which was faster than the people taking the elevator. But by the time we all just smushed in together, didn't really make much of a difference. So again, I was at a wrestling show, so maybe a few steps, you know, wasn't going to kill me. And then a wrestling show. The steps are going to be the the least populated place in the entire building. Exactly.
00:22:59
Speaker
So it looked very packed. Like it looked like there were a lot of people at this thing from your pictures, like at least in the lines. It was a good crowd. I mean, I'd say it was a good crowd. It was kind of hard trying to think about the different sides, but it was probably a few hundred. So.
00:23:17
Speaker
This is this is such a bizarre concept. I've never been to what essentially amounted to like two people at a convention. It was like if they had a convention for two people and there just happened to be a wrestling show at it is the way it felt. It was that was basically it. Right. I mean, a pretty big chunk of the crowd went to get meet Bret Hart and meet FTR.
00:23:44
Speaker
Um, a couple of people talk to some of the other indie wrestlers. Again, I might have, but it took so long online for Brett and FTR really have time. Um, had I had more time, maybe I would have talked to Brian Fillman Jr. He seemed fine. Um, but yeah, I got gotten line, got mine for Brett first thing. Cause it's Brett. Got to make sure you get that, that Brett autograph. Um, he was, um,
00:24:12
Speaker
He took, Line took a while because, and as Matt suggested would happen, because he's met Brett before, Brett loves talking to kids. So if there's kids in the group, Brett's sitting, he's chatting, he's asking how you are. That's why he was a Canadian hero. Hero, okay, millions of children, right? Brett's there and he's ready to talk to the kids and wants to engage. I did not have a long chat with Brett,
00:24:41
Speaker
I did get a laugh out of him because I told him, because I was thinking about this, right? I was like, what can I say to Bret Hart that he hasn't heard a million times? Everyone's told him, man, that match against Mr. Perfect, it's so incredible, the match against Owen, match against Bulldog. And something did hit me that was real and true, which was that I loved Bret Hart from like the Hart Foundation on when he became a singles guy, he was a big deal to me. So I was a Bret Hart fan for like,
00:25:08
Speaker
eight, nine years by the time you get to 1997, when of course he turns on America and starts talking about how shitty America is in raw Canada. And I was like, Brett, you have to say, thank you for all the, uh, the great matches, but I also realized you did something else for me too. You were the first person to make me question America. And that got a laugh. He said that was bad as political as wrestling, I'll ever get. And then he, uh, we took a picture and he signed my, uh,
00:25:38
Speaker
But my micro brawler, um, it was nice. I, he was one of those, he's one of those people that I just got for those who are considering meeting him. He's just one of those people to me. Again, he was such a like larger than life figure that just like addressing him as a human being was like, that's pretty awesome. He's a real human person.
00:25:57
Speaker
It sounds like everything I said last week ended up being incorrect. That sounds like a pleasant interaction. You got to meet a childhood hero. It sounds like a lot of kids didn't have an awkward experience. He just seemed to me like he would be such a surly guy, but it seems like he... But also everybody is paying a hefty little chunk of money for his time. And it's nice of him to...
00:26:26
Speaker
You know, at least be cordial. And I think he is. Yeah. And I think he's he's cordial. And he's I mean, that's why they keep they can keep bringing him out to do this stuff because he is cordial. People still want to meet him. I think and I think the connection to FTR is nice, too. It kind of brings it together. They bring him to the ring. They give a little speech afterwards. There's just kind of a nice energy of like not a lot of times again, when the old guys come out, it's very much like, oh, look, they are over there in the corner.
00:26:57
Speaker
You know, over there it's the old guy and they're kind of like bridging a gap and saying, Hey, like we love this guy and we want him with us. And he's part of our, he's meaningful to me. Dax gave a speech after the match about basically he's like, like I wasn't sure who loved me, but somehow in my heart, I knew Brett Hart loved me, you know, and just how meaningful he was, you know, it's like, Oh wow. You know? Um, and I think that got, you know, brings bridges the gap and brings Brett into a new generation of people, which is great.
00:27:28
Speaker
I mean, I'm very happy you had a good experience with him. It would have been a shame if it had gone the other way. So from him, did you have to hop in another line? Straight to the FTR line, straight to the FTR. There's a separate FTR line, went straight to it because at this point I'm looking at the clock and going like, I don't want this to run out of time before I can meet them. So yeah, they were also very nice.
00:28:00
Speaker
Cash asked about my t shirt. He's like, he's like, Look, I'm not a fashion guy, but I like to judge everyone's t shirts. I was wearing a violent miracle shirt. That was the space of the summer slam 1997 poster, essentially, with Brett and the undertaker behind him. And he's like, that's a good one. Um, Dax correctly named the the bootleg maker.
00:28:23
Speaker
Very into bootleg t-shirts, apparently decks. Um, and then as we discussed, I was basically just like, Hey, uh, what's your favorite midnight express match? And they're like, Oh, the ones with the fantastics. And we specifically, and Dax was right. I thought it was Miami, but he's right that the one on pro is from Chattanooga. Totally right. Shouldn't have questioned Dax on the location of, of classic midnight express, uh, fantastic matches. Um, and we basically just were like, yeah, those are amazing.
00:28:50
Speaker
That was most of my experience with them. They did not have the belts, which was a little bit sad that if they'd been cool, if they had the belts, but on the other hand, those are a lot of belts. That's a lot of belts. They're heavy. Got to carry those around. That seems like a whole thing, but okay. So would you say that the majority of the people in attendance did one or both of these meet and greets? I'm not sure about a majority, but had to be a good percentage.
00:29:19
Speaker
You know, because basically it seemed like they had lines for the meet and greets for like two hours straight. And this is two hours that the show is not running? This is before the show, right? So meet and greet 630 to 830 show at 830. I just bid big air quotes that no one can see. Because the show 100% did not start at 830. It started at like 10 after nine.
00:29:48
Speaker
And weirdly, what I realized was weird when the music kicked in, when they're like, oh, the show's about to start. Not only was the show late, but we were in dead silence. Like they had no DJ. It was just like complete, just all of us alone with our thoughts.
00:30:09
Speaker
See, that's something you don't get enough of at wrestling shows, is a little bit of thinking time. Right. To look around at the other people, people watching Silence. Treat this more like you're on an airplane, you know? One man in front, because I was waiting a long time, because I was pretty hungry, waited a long time for the food, got towards the front of the line, they ran out of food. But they had more.
00:30:36
Speaker
And there's the one guy was waiting. He's like, I'm waiting. I'm staying right here in front of the line. Cause I'm with the food right away. And I was like, okay, man. Yeah, I think I'll do the same. Right. I got nowhere to go. Um, they show up with a pile of hot dogs and he's like,
00:30:49
Speaker
Bullshit waiting for the burgers. I'm like, I'm just taking the hot dogs right now, man. I just, you seemed very hungry and impatient. So I'm surprised you're not taking the chance to eat something. Yeah. Um, when literally the two options were hot dogs and hamburgers, I want to be clear. That was the entire, there was food at least that was nice. I thought that there was, I had options to eat food. Did it concern you where it was coming from?
00:31:13
Speaker
I saw outside, so the actual meet and greet was on this balcony, which was actually very nice. Again, for those who may have seen the pictures, maybe I'll put them back up in our main feed, but we had a view of the Manhattan skyline was lovely.
00:31:28
Speaker
That was honestly, that was a very excellent photo with Bret Hart. Like it's not like you're just in a white room or like have like a toy store's logo written behind you. The fucking Manhattan skyline. That's amazing. Yeah. So I guess that's maybe that's the pitch. If they ever do shows like this at this place again or meet and greet things, just like at least your meet and greet photos are going to look kind of cool. You got to get to deep ass Brooklyn on this rooftop in this industrial area. But on the other hand,
00:31:58
Speaker
Those look good. But I saw someone barbecue grilling. So I knew that they were coming basically fresh from a grill somewhere.
00:32:06
Speaker
Okay, that makes me feel a little bit better. It does, you know, I get a little weird when I go to a place that doesn't normally serve food and suddenly food is just appearing. I need to know what car ride that food went on. Where did it come from? Sounds like, okay, it sounds like you're good here. Yeah, I mean, it was a hot dog, a cup, two hot dogs, but still, yeah, I mean, the journey to the place, you really don't want to know about, but the journey,
00:32:36
Speaker
from the, from the grill to the place was probably a five feet, five foot trip. Um, yeah, because basically we're on, so this, the place was called soccer roof. And it appeared to be a bunch of outs. So outside was the balcony, but inside appeared to just be a bunch of soccer fields where other people and other people were playing soccer on the other side of the wall.
00:33:00
Speaker
during the Bret Hart meet and greet, soccer and wrestling. And during the wrestling show, yeah, there's soccer happening the entire time. Was there any point during the show that you thought, this seems better, I should go watch the soccer? Admittedly, it was like amateur soccer. So I'm not watching rando dudes play soccer. Now, I'll watch rando dudes wrestle. That's clear from my experience, the show.
00:33:31
Speaker
That's clear from, yeah, that's clear from weeks of us talking about Appalachian Championship.

Brooklyn Wrestling Event Experience

00:33:38
Speaker
We have very low standards for professional wrestling. Um, yeah, so we're, I'm basically, we're basically on like the corner soccer field. Um, just, just chilling with a nice view. They could kind of get a view of the skyline from the, in there too. Um,
00:33:55
Speaker
But yeah, just watching wrestling, which felt very indie. I felt I've gone to shows at the the Staten Island Sports Fest before or ECW did some shows. I saw like an ICW show there. You see what I don't like. You see W or ICW, whatever it's called this time. And yeah, that took me back. I was like, yeah, children play here, but now people are going to bleed.
00:34:19
Speaker
Oh, so what I have to know. OK, obviously, FTR wrestled. And who did they who'd you say they wrestled? J lethal and homicide. OK, that's a match. That's a match. They had a really good match. Basically, they they worked sort of straightforward tag team formula with two hot tags.
00:34:43
Speaker
lethal, obviously lethal and homicide played heel here. Lethal came out because he got a nice applause and was like, you know, I'm from this place. It's nice to get applause, but fuck you. Cause I moved to Tampa. Um,
00:34:57
Speaker
And, uh, so yeah, they had a really good. Tag team match. It was really cool to see like an FTR match up close. And it wasn't like a classic classic, but it's also it's FTR doing tag team formula. It works. They're very, they're the best in the world at it. They're very over. Um, so playing baby phases works great. Really enjoyed the match. Um, that match went on fourth. Out of how many? Seven.
00:35:28
Speaker
Okay. Seven. So, cause what I think and what I'm assuming happened here, I'm like, so show starts late. By the time we get to the FTR match, it's 10 o'clock. And my guests, they had to show the next day in Wisconsin. I'm guessing there's a writer in Brett's contract that says there's a, there's a time that Brett gets to leave and go to bed.
00:35:49
Speaker
Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. And and it's probably something like ten thirty and they were like, look, OK, it's ten o'clock now. We're sending the FTR match out. Right. I'll be done by ten thirty. You can go to the hotel and go to bed and get ready for his flight the next day. That's got to be it, because there's nothing was following that match. I mean, there's nothing that's following where you're like, oh, the level on this match is going to be equally good. No, not a thing that's going to happen. Not because the crowd start to leave.
00:36:20
Speaker
Not aggressively, I think it sort of slowly thinned out. It wasn't like everyone left, but I think everyone sort of slowly looked around. Because part of it was that at this point, we're only like an hour and a half into the show. So no one's like, oh man, I've been here for hours, gotta go home now. It's like, I mean, I paid for a show. I guess I could wait another half hour or so. So you didn't make it to the end though, right?
00:36:46
Speaker
I did actually, I made it to the very last sec. I basically, I saw the move that was clearly gonna lead to the pin and I was like, I'm good. And I went to get an Uber. That was at like 1110, something like that, 1115. Okay, so obviously, FTR best match of the night. Was there anything else the rest of the night that caught your eye that you thought like, this was fun, this was worthwhile?
00:37:16
Speaker
Hmm. Chris's face looks hesitant. Like he looks like, no, I'm going to go. No. Um, cause quite frankly, even people that I've enjoyed before did not seem like they were having a great night. I don't know whether it was about the ring or, um, so yeah. So, um, the first match was two people I had never recognized before. They were fine. They had a perfectly acceptable wrestling match while I was acquiring beer. Um,
00:37:47
Speaker
The second match was a tag team that I did not know against the tag team called the main event. Um, they do that kind of like lion tamer and they were on a GCW show in, um, New York against boozy. Okay. Um, they're good. They had a, again, just a really kind of acceptable, it wasn't their best night, but I, they're, they're really good. Um, I did also, I think I realized later in the crowd.
00:38:12
Speaker
who the guy with the mask is. And I just tried to turn away because I think it would be kind of one of those Ninja Mac deals where it's like, I don't want to see him without the mask. Like, this is much better if I don't just don't know who he is. If he's just a white guy, a kind of pasty white guy doing flips. I. I'd just rather not know. Ninja Mac really ruined that for all of us. Yeah. Why did he do that? Who told him that was OK? Don't don't know. But he's in Japan now. So maybe that's he's he's teaming with Muda.
00:38:40
Speaker
That's pretty great. Japan's a great place for Ninja Mac right now. I will miss him. As long as he never takes the mask off there. He just eats through the mask. He goes over there and ends up dead because he basically water boards himself with some soup, just trying to have a nice bisque.
00:39:00
Speaker
Yeah, I hope Ninja Mac finds a way to eat without giving away his true identity. So, yeah, so the third match. So we did talk last week that we know that the big time wrestling champion is someone named Dream Crusher, Danny Miles. And I have a theory about who where the name Dream Crusher comes from. Go ahead. The Dream Crusher.
00:39:31
Speaker
is whichever doctor growing up told Danny Miles, you're not getting much taller. Because he was like a foot shorter than like everyone in the ring. Like Ninja Mack height. I feel like if you put him next to Adam Cole, everyone would be like, is Adam Cole a giant? That's a...
00:40:00
Speaker
He wrestled Teddy goods. Like are we talking like, Marco Stunt size? Probably, probably a little bigger than Marco Stunt, but like not much. Like if you had him face off against Marco Stunt, it would be embarrassing for him because Marco Stunt's the little guy and like they're just, was he at least like, was he a fit guy? Was he buff?
00:40:24
Speaker
Was he? Yeah, he was like, he was sort of fit. He wasn't the most fit. He's the champion. He's the champion. His finisher was the Roderick Strong backbreaker, but shitty. Okay. It was the shitty Roderick Storm backbreaker. That's what he finished Teddy goods with. Okay. Did he have like, was he charismatic? Was there something about? Not, not a bit. So,
00:40:55
Speaker
What got him that title? You're like the shitty back break or he won a match. But I'm pretty sure it's his continued willingness to be booked by big time wrestling and his inability to be booked anywhere else. He's a guy that's willing to follow the convention around. Exactly. He's there. He's like he's they're never like, hey, do you have this shit? I'm sorry. I got like a GCW booking that weekend. He's like, no, no, no, still available.
00:41:23
Speaker
He is a guy that's willing to leave his kids at a moment's notice. The only booking he had to cancel was his kid's soccer game. And it was the finals. They won.
00:41:46
Speaker
You're never gonna get those memories back. You're never gonna get- But he got to wrestle on the undercard on a soccer field, which is just as good. And he could see the Manhattan skyline. Right. I mean, that's nothing to sneeze at. That's a good night. His kids just didn't get a bedtime story. And they're gonna have to live with that.
00:42:16
Speaker
I like this guy. Um, he's, I mean, you could go, you could go two ways with him. You could go like, he's a work and dad providing, or you could go like, he's a fucking asshole. Here's the thing, Garrett, I've, I've learned about fatherhood. It's a little bit of both.
00:42:35
Speaker
It's really whatever frame you look at it. Don't get too down. That's what he reminds himself. He's like, I'm providing for my kids. And he that's when when when he gets the like sad like like FaceTime video in the back, he's like. I'm providing for them. That's it. That's that's how we make sure he's able to go to bed at night. He's the the I'll come back when the angels win the pennant guy. He is he is the dream crusher.
00:43:03
Speaker
Yeah, he's the dream crusher. What is the most important moment of your child's life that you've missed due to pro wrestling? You have to have missed something. I don't know if I've missed anything very significant moments. I've missed some weekends to go, you know, hang out with you in the grand sports arena. And I appreciate that.
00:43:31
Speaker
Uh, that is one thing I will point out as much as I do. This place was a bit more grand than the grand sports arena, I think, but the food, not nearly as good. You bring me some of those, uh, you brings, and this is a soccer venue. You'd think they'd have something, but you, you bring me, um, The tamale lady or whatever. The tamale lady. Yeah. The taco. Yeah. I'm that would be amazing. I would love, I would love, I would go to all the big time wrestling shows at the soccer roof if that woman were there. Um,
00:43:59
Speaker
The thing is, you've got all these wrestling fans who are ready to eat. They're literally only there to spend money. What's another 10 bucks on a plate of tacos? The show started, the thing started at 6.30. 6.30 to like 11, I was there. So it took me an hour, almost an hour to get there. So I left at 5.30. And it sounds like there was plenty of room for food trucks outside.
00:44:24
Speaker
Exactly. That was actually the thing, Garrett. My daughter's first soccer game was this weekend and I just didn't. You know, I just. We are very weird. Yeah, very weird. They booked the soccer game at eight o'clock, but for four year olds, but I just needed to see Dreamcrusher Danny Miles. We bonded over that outside. He was smoking camels and I didn't decline because I'm healthy. But I we talked about we talked about missing our kids soccer games and.
00:44:54
Speaker
He did. He told me it gets better. Don't worry. I'm rooting for this guy. I'm going to he's going to I don't want to say he's going to be our beast man, but he's going to be like our. I don't know. He's I mean, you can't compare him to anybody. He's here's the thing. I think it's I don't think they commit very many of these shows to videotape. So you're just not going to have the footage. To it's like a deep dive.
00:45:22
Speaker
It's like a Mike Elgin comedy show. You can't see it. You gotta just be there. You gotta just be there. You gotta be there. So yeah, so then in the show, we get the Bret Hart and FTR thing. That's great. They go to a women's match. Tina San Antonio against Tiara James. Again, both good. Although they did a weird thing where Joel Gertner was like,
00:45:47
Speaker
talking about them, like, and then they, at the end, they both, they all kicked him in the balls. It was fine. Um, again, they're both people I've seen wrestle and I felt like had better nights than they did on Saturday night. Um, that was the other thing. There was one point where Joel Gertner earlier in the show, cause he's hosting, right? He's doing, he's doing jokes, he's doing a shtick. And, uh, people are already, the second time he comes out already doing like shut the F up, I guess, cause they just really want to get to Bret Hart. Um, understandable.
00:46:17
Speaker
And he like, there's one guy in the front row that he goes to. And if you've ever seen a 90s ECW Gertner in the Dudley's, they would really, they do a lot of crowd work. That's basically, especially Bubba's crowd work about how many moms in the crowd he's boned, right? Generally the 94, unsurprisingly. And you could see that Gertner went in
00:46:43
Speaker
try about to about to do that kind of work with the guy and looked around and saw the number of eight year olds in the crowd and was like, I've been in this industry replacing mother since before you were born. And in that time, I
00:47:05
Speaker
Oh, like, and you know, he's going for like, I fucked your mom and I'm your dad or something. And he's, he's like, no, I don't. So I'll know when to shut up. You can just tell you, it's just, it's just like working through the options. You know, he's, he's a pro, he's a pro.
00:47:22
Speaker
Um, would it have been okay for him to curse at them? Like, is this a show that like, this would have been out of line. I kind of think it would have been the crowd was cursing, but I was also a little bit, there was a decent number of kids there. I don't know. It just felt like we were on a soccer field. It just didn't seem like the place we should all be cursing. I don't know. It's, I feel like wrestling has gotten progressively naughtier as far as profanity since we were kids. Um, and in about that,
00:47:53
Speaker
I mean, I think it comes to waves, right? Cause attitude era ECW and that's pretty like, you know, people just chanting. She's a slut at everyone. I don't know. Like that was pretty not bad. Then I think it went down. Maybe it's coming back up a little bit.
00:48:08
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, especially with just one of the top wrestling shows saying shit a lot, like almost an amount like that episode of South Park where they discovered they could say shit as much as they wanted and had a little ticker in the corner, just counting how many times throughout the episode. But especially with indie shows, I mean, there's a lot like most GCW shows, there isn't an age limit to get in.
00:48:34
Speaker
And if somebody's cutting a promo, it's, it's not like clean, you know, I don't know. No one's bringing kids to GCW shows. Well, it's not that many. That's yeah. Yeah. I'm trying to think if I, I mean, there were probably some kids at the fairgrounds, but that show is also happening at like 10 o'clock at night or something. Right. Anyone brings a kid to death match war games. It's like someone calls, someone calls us social services.
00:49:04
Speaker
Well, the Dream Crusher might have gotten booked, so that's why he took his kid on vacation there. So yes, the next match, this is another. So this reminded me. One of the things the show reminded me of was that in the. Early 2000s, I went to a lot of USA Pro wrestling shows at the Elks Lodge and a couple other places, too. And the whole USA Pro thing was basically
00:49:33
Speaker
They would book like names, you know, at the top, there'd be some like good indie guys, but then they would also just book so many people basically trying to get like, it's this guy's first match. Maybe everyone in his family will show up. Kind of.
00:49:52
Speaker
So wrestlers have to do bringer shows too. Oh yeah, there were literally things called ticket seller matches where the idea was basically you had to sell X number of tickets to get on the show.
00:50:05
Speaker
and we had to watch them. And these shows would run like four hours. This show was not as long, but part of what would happen is also somewhere in the middle, the guy who owned the show and his friend who had a mullet that was, let's be clear, significantly nicer than Mike Elkins, would have just a truly terrible wrestling match.
00:50:29
Speaker
And the next guy out who wrestled Casanova Valentine reminded me of that. His name was Mr. TA. He went to the really classic heat thing, which is he said, if anyone says Mr. TA sucks, there's gonna be hell to pay. And some people were like, TA sucks, TA sucks. Everyone was like, wait a minute, that's what he wanted. And kind of stopped.
00:50:57
Speaker
So Casanova Valentine was on the card at big time? Yes, and he had a slow plotting brawl with this man who looked like he could be Casanova's dad. I mean, was there any... I don't think I've ever seen Casanova do anything other than a death match. So this was... Light death match, basically. There was a cheese grater, tables, cookie sheets kind of stuff. It was like...
00:51:25
Speaker
you know, a G-rated death match. Not a G-rated death match, a G-rated death match.
00:51:33
Speaker
Who is actually gonna be the opener at Big Mike's next weekend of comedy? Yes. G-Ray was on the way down to Arkansas to open for Big Mike. And it was really bad. I don't know how to describe it. It was like Mr. TA was an ECW legend on an Appalachian Championship wrestling show, except no one was excited to see him.
00:52:00
Speaker
And then I looked at the Shane Douglas amount of work. Right. Except without having earned the Shane Douglas amount of work. Exactly. Exactly. I'm looking at like his like cage match and it's like big time wrestling big time. He's like hasn't wrestled anywhere else in years during the pandemic when big time I guess wasn't running shows. He just wasn't working. He was just hanging out. Maybe he's a TA. That's his thing. I don't know. Maybe that's his actual Mr. TA is because he's a TA. I don't know.
00:52:29
Speaker
Um, yeah, yeah. That's a, yeah, that's a good gig. But it was that with some wrestling, they was not. Yeah. Yeah. So at that point, I'm thinking I'm ready to go. And then they announced that the next match is the main event. I said, okay, it's the main event. I'll stay, right? It's not that late. Get something in. Now, when they announced the main event, it was clear that they had told us two lies.
00:53:04
Speaker
The first was that Davey Boy Smith Jr. would be there. He was not there. Never announced, never addressed. The second lie, which I'm pretty sure was as a result of Davey Boy Smith Jr. not being there was that the SATs were not going to be in a six-man tag match. They were going to be in a tag match.
00:53:28
Speaker
Now, admittedly didn't really care that much, not to see the third Maximo brother. He's basically like, he's, he's not that important. It's Jose and Joelle. No one really remembers Will that much. You know, he's, he's, he's just there. Um, they wrestled, uh, Brian Pillman Jr. And, um, the something kid, I don't really, it just said kid on his, um, kick pads. So I assume he was the something kid.
00:53:56
Speaker
Um, he, he had like heart foundation, he tights on. Um, and he was, uh, an African-American man. Uh, he, he looked kinda like. Like if something, if rich swan just really let himself go and like, didn't eat, not like fat, but you're like, wow, didn't you used to be kind of buff rich swan? And he was like, yeah. Like that's more like a, like a cheeseburger.
00:54:26
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. If, uh, if rich Swan and cheeseburger, uh, made it, I don't know. I like, he can't, he can't fuck a cheeseburger. Right. I mean, that's, that's an appropriate. So he took the pen. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. So the second he came out, you're just like, Oh, he's there. He's taking the pin. Well, and that was the other thing was I was like, Oh, I'm watching. I went to the bathroom. I was like, let me watch the last picture. I go to the bathroom before I got like an hour cab ride home. I got to make sure I've got the gun and, um,
00:54:57
Speaker
And the match is winding down and you could almost see, I don't know if they figured this out before or after, but the maximos finisher is the Spanish fly from the top rope. They're sort of the innovators. I guess the innovators of that move. I didn't see it before they did it. And, um, but they realized there's netting like above where the ring is. There's no way they could do the Spanish fly. So they put one on the shoulder, the guy, the kid, uh, the something kid on the shoulders and did some kind of like ACE crusher. It was not great. Um.
00:55:26
Speaker
The Something Kid did not show very much promise. He did not show any promise. So that was the entire show. So it was one really good match and a lot of stuff that I knew I was gonna come here and make jokes about, Garrett. Gotta tell you. On a scale of one to 10, where does the night fall for you?
00:55:53
Speaker
That's a good one. You know, cause I think the night that's the, I'm like, would I go back to a big time wrestling show? And the answer is if they got people that I was willing to pay to meet and greet, I think the answer is yes. Cause I had a good experience at the meet and greet. I saw one really excellent wrestling match and the rest of the show was both short and so bad that I think we've been going for about 40 minutes, just
00:56:19
Speaker
Yeah. Making jokes about these guys. I think we'd be talking about dream crusher, Danny miles for weeks. So I, he, he really gave us a lot of mileage. Like he is gonna.
00:56:30
Speaker
Yeah. Stay tuned to the next episode to hear what Dream Crutcher is up to. Garrett, Garrett, aggressively googling right now to see if he can see the shitty Roderick Strong Backbreaker just to really process it. Because it's hard to explain because it's just it's the same move. It's just done shittier. Just words. Yeah. It's way worse. You're like, oh, I can recognize what move that is. But it's just bad. Who who else is on the top of your
00:56:59
Speaker
your meet and greet bucket list. Obviously, Bret Hart seemed to be a big one for you enough so that you went to big time. Who else is on there? Is there anybody of that same caliber? That's a good question. In part, a couple of them that would be on that caliber for me as a kid are gone.
00:57:24
Speaker
The macho man, for example, right? Like Brett was like up there for like, you know, macho man with me. So I think that, you know, that that's part of the thing is that we, you know, we don't have those, um, those opportunities. Um, I don't know. Cause I had a good experience with Shane the one time. And I don't know if I need to repeat that one. Cause that was so good. Uh,
00:57:47
Speaker
Mox, you know, Mox, I would really like to just sort of like, I'd really like to do a meet and greet with Mox. Although part of the thing I'm concerned about, I have a really wonderful print of a photo of Mox where it's right after one of the Josh Barnett blood sport shows. And he's sitting in a locker room, he's smoking a cigarette and he's got a bottle of Jack Daniels on his knee.
00:58:15
Speaker
It's a beautiful photo and I would love to have Mach sign it. I'm no longer sure if it is appropriate to offer that photo for Mach's to sign where he's got a bottle of Jack Daniels on his knee. I just don't know. Yeah, that was that was the height of COVID collective. We're like, everybody got COVID that weekend. And yeah, he that would have been like deep in Mach's having. A problem like presumably, yeah.
00:58:43
Speaker
Yeah, you're right. That is, it's too good of a picture though. I think even he could look at that picture and be like, yeah, that was, that was a good night. Yeah. I looked real cool drinking. Yeah. It sucks. I can't drink anymore, but I looked real cool doing it. So, um, that, that is, that is like a top, like maybe top 10 favorite wrestling picture. It's yeah, it's, it's strong. Yeah. And I think so. Meeting him would be pretty great. Um,
00:59:13
Speaker
I've never, he walked like right past me at all in, but I've never done one with Omega. Um, that might be one, that'd be, or Okada. Okada's another one, kind of like Brett, you kind of want to pay your respects to a little bit. You're like, you did Okada, right? I did. It was me and Alex, queen of the ring. She somehow got, I think she got a free meet and greet with him somehow and took me along. And I was, I was very happy about it because now I have,
00:59:43
Speaker
my program from Wrestle Kingdom 12, signed by both Okada and Nido. Ooh, that's strong. So that was fun. And Okada, I don't know, there was definitely a lot of language barrier, but he smelled really nice. What did he smell like, Aaron? I'm trying to remember. I just remember it being great. I can't, maybe a little floral.
01:00:10
Speaker
But not in like a funeral home way, like. No, just a little bit. Like a fresh meadow. His hair is a fresh meadow. That makes sense. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, no, he was he was a good one. Nido was a great meet and greet too. He was fun. I don't know. I think like I guess I would still love to meet Stone Cold at some point. I feel like that would be kind of a surreal childhood character. I don't think anyone would say no to saying hi to The Rock.
01:00:40
Speaker
Here's my pitch for a stone cold meet and greet. Um, everyone wants to have a beer with stone cold. There's no way you can have a beer with everyone, but everyone, as you get in line has to purchase a broken skull IPA. And he each, as you get up there, he cheers as you, and he takes one sip with you. So he drinks, like, I don't know, four beers over the court. He takes small steps. You know what I mean? But everyone gets to take a sip of beer with stone cold.
01:01:06
Speaker
I think an embarrassing thing about me is I was not really a beer drinker for a long time and did not have a taste for IPAs. But then when I lived in LA, there was a corner store not far from me that actually sold Broken Skull. And I kind of forced myself into drinking IPAs just because I wanted those, you know, Stone Cold was, it's wrestling and you know, we like to spend money.
01:01:34
Speaker
Right, you wanted to make sure, yeah, you wanted to enjoy what wrestlers enjoy. So it was wrestling adjacent, you had to drink it. Sorry, I keep looking over my shoulder as we record this, we're recording Monday night, and I have Raw on behind me.
01:01:50
Speaker
And I think Joey Janela successfully worked everyone for like the last week and making people think that for the GCW would be on WWE. And that's so bizarre. The one that they would want him
01:02:09
Speaker
But two, he convinced everybody that. We're like news outlets, we're like, GCW's coming. It's like fuckin' why? You're not gonna see Schlack roll in. It's like, I hear Corey Graves be like, oh my god, that's Schlack! There is no god, there's only Schlack, and he's stickin' a light tube in Seamus's neck! That was not gonna happen, yeah.
01:02:35
Speaker
Yeah. And it seems like the last, at least the last news is that, well, first of all, we're apparently going to find out about GCW streaming thing pretty soon, which is cool. Um, and then it's probably not the WWE network. It's probably some fight plus thing, which would be, I guess we'll see what the details are. Maybe, but I guess maybe we'll know by next week or maybe it'd be the week after. I don't know. Um, what would be the price point for you to like, to stream those? I mean, honestly, like even.
01:03:03
Speaker
I don't know, like, I'm trying to think like, even in my mind, like maybe a hundred bucks, like for a year, could be reasonable. Like the amount of shows you would get. And I have to imagine they would get enough people that don't regularly buy these that that would work out for them. Yeah, I think it'd be like, I think if you went like what's currently one GCW show, like 14 a month or something,
01:03:33
Speaker
I definitely do that. Depending on what else was involved, 20 a month sounds kind of like the max. That's all right. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, if there's other wrestling to enjoy and also like some weird boxing that I would never ever see otherwise. Yeah. Yeah, somewhere around it's something like that.
01:03:59
Speaker
Yeah, I don't know. But, but you have, okay. So this was just like the first, was this your first show of the month? Uh, yes. Cause I had not, I missed GCW. Um, and so I hadn't gotten to anything since, um, since grand slam. And then in the next week, you have three more shows. That's correct.
01:04:24
Speaker
God, you're living the dream in New York. You get to see mittens four times in like seven days. Yeah, he's definitely gonna be at these next three shows, because we've got two nights of New Japan at what used to be a concert, like maybe it's still a concert venue. It's called the Palladium now in Times Square. Used to be the PlayStation Theater and the Best Buy Theater and the something else. They just keep changing the name of it. You get to go see Eddie Kingston
01:04:53
Speaker
and Okada team and Times Square. Yeah. That's the American dream. In a place where I once saw Slash and I saw a Hanson concert there with my wife. Goodness. Maybe two. I've seen two there. My wife really loves Hanson. People think that Bob is it, but Penny and me was a banger.
01:05:16
Speaker
When Hanson plays Penny and Me at their shows, now you gotta understand, Hanson shows at this point are mostly women who are in their 30s, who like started with Hanson back in the day and just have stuck with it. When they play Penny and Me, now first my wife and I took me to a Hanson show. We're up in like the balcony and she's like, I'm like, why don't you wanna be down close? You normally like to be, and she's like, it gets a little too intense down there. I was like, come on. It's Hanson. And when they started, and particularly when they hit that song,
01:05:48
Speaker
The crowd went fucking wild, throwing themselves physically toward the stage, just launching their bodies upward. Like I have video in that same arena where I'm gonna see Okada and Eddie Kingston team of just, I don't know if the crowd's gonna go as wild.
01:06:07
Speaker
For them. Two men who are equally foreverable, forever fuckable. As fuckable as Hanson. Of course. Yes, yes. People love those guys, but I don't think people are going to jump the same way they did for Hanson. I just don't think so.
01:06:23
Speaker
I just don't think it's going to be the same. Um, but it's going to be good. It's going to be good. So yeah, we've got two, two new Japan shows.

Upcoming Wrestling Shows

01:06:30
Speaker
The first night is just all it's a, because it's the night before the rumble on 44th street, it's a nightmare, like a Halloween theme. It's, it's spooky. Um, so spooky means mystery. Um, so they're basically doing a PWG mystery vortex show, nothing announced.
01:06:48
Speaker
they've announced the people on the show, it looks very good. And there's a few blacked out people on the poster, two of which seem like Mox and Darby, which is exciting, potentially. Which you could get to see one of the Mox, New Japan death matches. Ooh, that's a good point. Yeah, could they just do, maybe there's gonna probably be a tag team match, maybe she's just gonna do a death tag team match, who knows? Mox and Darby like throwing some people through barbed wire would be fun. Right.
01:07:17
Speaker
Honestly, both of those shows sound very fun. I like that New Japan is starting to do these US shows, but bringing in more of the names you would like to see on these shows. Exactly. Right. I mean, this is a solid, especially like Night 2 is a really solid lineup. As you said, Okada in Kingston against Juice and Jay White, Suzuki's on the show against Clark Connors, Ozzy opens defending the strong tag titles.
01:07:48
Speaker
We're getting, oh, and Shingo against El Fantasmo for the KOPW, which should be really good, in a street fight. Since Forbidden Door, has Clark started to actually move up the card in New Japan, or worse? I think he got hurt right around then, so I think he's coming back just in time to get slapped in the face by Suzuki. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That'll be a fun weekend. Plus, you're taking your daughter to, is it her first wrestling show, or did you take her to some WWE stuff?
01:08:18
Speaker
I took her so we took her to a one WWE house show. Like an after Christmas thing a few years ago. And that was fine, but she was really young and frankly, we got the tickets for free and I didn't really care. So we left like an hour. Like she had a good time, like an hour or something in where like you're one and a half and very tired. We're going to take you home. We're not going to we're not going to stick this out.
01:08:45
Speaker
But this time she seems kind of excited. I asked like, do you want to go to a wrestling show with daddy? She said, yes. The shows at six p.m., which is good because it's generally it's House of Glory. Generally, the shows go about two hours, which means it's ending basically right at bedtime. Got to like zip out of there, of course. But but she's excited. I'm excited. They're bringing in House of Glory is bringing in a bunch of the New Japan guys.
01:09:14
Speaker
So, uh, Shingo is wrestling, uh, low key. And my daughter fascinated by Shingo because he's called the dragon and she's like, he's, is he a dragon dad? He's not, he's a man. He's not a dragon. Um, so that's very funny to her. Um, she really liked, El Fantasma is going to be there. She really likes his light up jacket.
01:09:35
Speaker
Um, are you going to take her to any of the meet and greets? Well, that's, I'm curious who's like, I think her doing a meet and greet with Shingo would be really funny. You're just like, honey, this is Loki. She's like, I don't care. I really, no, I don't want, I don't want Loki offering his thoughts on, on like vaccinate. Don't get vaccinated kid. Your immune system strong. Don't let them do that to you. Be a warrior.
01:10:04
Speaker
Instead you're showing her Paw Patrol where city bad, city scary. He learns his lesson, Garret. It takes him too long to do it, but he learns his lesson. The cop dog bit the ambulance dog in the throat. Told him to shut the hell up. Look, look. The cop dog didn't know what he was doing, and it was in self-defense.
01:10:34
Speaker
And that's why he shot that truck driver 44 times. Jesus Christ. Jesus. It's, you know, and if you don't back the blue, then you're an asshole and you hate America. Yeah. Um, no, Brett was right. Look, Brett was right. It's a cesspool. You should have asked him about Paw Patrol. What do you think of this? Is this, is this American propaganda? Do they have anything like this up in Canada?
01:11:05
Speaker
You know, I once said that if you, uh, if you, if you put the enema into anywhere in the U S it was Pittsburgh, but actually it's wherever they'd make pop patrol. Shit. All right. I think that's okay. But here's, here's the thing. Cause here's the thing about the HOG show. You know what's main eventing? At least I'm, I think is the main event. Briscoe's versus Aussie open. That's worth price of admission.
01:11:35
Speaker
Yeah. And that's, I mean, honestly, like from based on what you saw the other night, this whole show is going to be just, I mean, this is going to be like the Citizen Kane of wrestling shows compared to your, your winter's tale that you just experienced. Probably, probably. And again, my daughter may have an excited meet and greet if Elle Fantasma has his light up jacket. I think that's what she'd be really into. She'd be like, that jacket is sparkly.
01:12:03
Speaker
And there's lights. That is fucking. Can I get a picture with that? She's like that. It has lights. That jacket is fucking awesome. And you're like, watch your mouth. And she's like, you've been showing me ECW. Fucking come on, dad. Don't be a putt, dad. Let's go meet El Fantasma. Buy me that meet and greet.
01:12:30
Speaker
I'm excited to hear about these shows. I think you've actually, I mean, other than meeting Bret Hart, I think you've got a better weekend in store for you as far as editing work. Yes. Except you get there and you find out that one of the Briscoes is injured and they've brought in the Dream Crusher to fill in for him. Dream Crusher don't take the bin. HOG would totally do that to you.
01:12:57
Speaker
That's the thing, that's why I've avoided HOG since they screwed us over on Briscoe's versus Penton Phoenix. But now I'm coming back. I'm coming back for the kid and they better not screw me again.
01:13:15
Speaker
Well, I hope you make it to the end of the show. Yeah, I'm looking forward to next week. Do we have any big shows we should be watching? I think next Saturday is Crown Jewel. We're watching Logan Paul fight Roman Reigns. Is it Saturday or is it November? Oh, it's a week from Saturday, right? Yeah, Baron Corbin's doing stuff.
01:13:38
Speaker
Yeah. We'll never run out of stuff to talk about with this crazy world of pro wrestling. We didn't even talk about Appalachian. We skipped it all together. Oh, oh my God. We, how to, Garrett, I'm looking at the clock here. We got to at least say two things, which Appalachian rats championship wrestling had the barnyard brawl BYO chair in a barnyard for the benefit of the West Virginia horse network, which gets, uh, helps horses get adopted.
01:14:06
Speaker
And they had a mini horse. Do you like parks and rec Garrett? Bye. Bye. Little Sebastian all day. The greatest, one of the all time great songs written about a miniature horse named little Sebastian. I don't know if this horse's name was Sebastian, but I would have adopted that horse and named it little Sebastian. Oh, you, you go to one of these shows. Your wife's going to be so mad when you show up with a pony.
01:14:33
Speaker
Your daughter's gonna be excited, but... No, she's gonna be mad, because she's like, you got a picture with little Sebastian? No, you bringing him home, though. Didn't you say it was a horse adoption thing, or what is it? Oh, yeah. No, I'm bringing him home. You can have as many pictures as you want. He lives in the basement now. Hey, we've got a yard and a garage. It's like... The yard's like 10 by 12. I don't know. We got some space.
01:15:00
Speaker
Plenty of room for a tiny horse. Plenty of room for a tiny horse. He's a tiny horse. Very small. Yeah. Those shows will never cease to amaze me. I have to get to one. I have to, I have to bring my own chair. I want to bring like a really nice chair. I got to find the perfect chair to take there. Um, goddamn, this is, we'll get there. We'll get there 2023. To the barnyard, to the barnyard we go. We'll, we'll explain to our wives.
01:15:28
Speaker
and our children. We're sorry. We have to go away for a couple of days because we've got to go see wrestling in a barnyard. I'm going to miss Ozzy's first steps because I'm going to be watching Beastman riding a tiny horse. Poor tiny horse.
01:15:44
Speaker
All right, everybody, thanks so much for tuning in this week. We will be back next time. I'm at Garthet on social media, at Predetermined Podcast on Instagram. He is at Chris Miggs. Remember, city bad, city scary, hit our goddamn music. Oh. Oh, and remember to rate, review, and subscribe. Always do that. Five stars. It's the, if you take the negative off of what you would give a Dream Crusher, Danny Miles match, that's what you want to give us, the five stars.
01:16:15
Speaker
Don't hit us with the shitty backbreaker. Hit us with the good backbreaker. Those five stars. All right, everybody. Have a good week. Hit the goddamn music.
