Podcast Introduction

00:00:05
Speaker
sports podcast network work Hello and welcome back. You're listening once again to The Daily Fulham Podcast.

Fulham vs West Ham Preview

00:00:13
Speaker
My name is Gavin Ruffell and after progress in the FA Cup attention switches back to League Matters. It's Tuesday and this is your preview to tonight's game as Fulham make the short trip to the London Stadium to take on the Amaz.
00:00:26
Speaker
and a very different Amaz this time because they are led by Graham Potter so this fixture most certainly does have a different feel about it than it did this time last week with Julian Lopategi being relieved of his duties and we'll get stuck into that that change and what West Ham fans can expect of this Graham Potter side.

Fulham's Derby Unbeaten Run Discussion

00:00:48
Speaker
but this is a chance for Fulham to extend and build upon the unbeaten run they have put together in recent times which with have that win with that victory in the cup against Watford went to nine games if you're being picky you could say there's probably more draws in there than you would like you

FA Cup Ambitions and Draw Reactions

00:01:06
Speaker
would like to have turned some of those draws into wins but despite that I still think a club like Fulham can be very proud of this record and it's not just the unbeaten run and all competitions that they take into this game it's actually the London Darby's the form they have shown in London Darby's over the course
00:01:24
Speaker
of the last year which believe it or not they are unbeaten in london derby's which goes all the way back to january the 13th so a year and a day since their last defeat in the london derby that was a one another feat away at stanford bridge

Player Spotlight: Andreas Pereira

00:01:38
Speaker
but it is an away game despite not being a very distant away game for them being at home for the last three games draws against Bournemouth and Ipswich followed it with that resounding victory over Watford and they also do have a very good away record coming into this game with just the two defeats both of those come in against teams in Manchester
00:01:59
Speaker
If we look back on the meeting earlier in the season, if you can remember that far back, back when the skies were blue, the sun was out and it was a lot warmer than it is today, this

West Ham's Managerial Shift: Lopategi to Potter

00:02:10
Speaker
was a game where Fulham played really well in but weren't able to convert their authority in the game, they weren't able to take their chances, they weren't clinical enough in front of goal and they were denied by a 95th minute Danny Ings equaliser which was bitterly disappointing at the time.
00:02:25
Speaker
and was almost a sign of things to come with Fulham this season with the way things have gone where it's been a case of almost but not quite whilst it's been a good season it's also been very close to being a great season and it could still end up being a great season of course but lets not dwell too much on the negatives. If you want to embrace the positives then you can look back to what happened last season where Fulham won this fixture 2-0 with a brace from Andreas Pereira. That result meant Fulham did the league double over West Ham as they also won the home fixture 5-0.
00:03:02
Speaker
before we look at all things West Ham and give a bit of a preview what we can expect to see in this game just got to start off with some news and it was the FA Cup weekend the draw has happened and it's seen Fulham drawn away

Rebuilding West Ham: Challenges and Expectations

00:03:20
Speaker
against either Mansfield or Wigan and I think most people will be pretty content with matters there not to take either of those two teams lightly but with a club like Fulham secure and comfortable in mid table i'm sure they'll have aspirations to go higher than in the current ninth place position but i do feel like the fa cup takes on more priority as the season progresses
00:03:42
Speaker
So a tie against one of those two sides in Ligue 1 does represent an opportunity to progress and possibly lift their first major bit of silverware. I mean, we're looking a bit too far forward there, aren't we? And of course some of you but will argue oh they won the Intertotel Cup, didn't they?
00:04:00
Speaker
But that's an opportunity. There's some storylines in either of those ties. If it is Wigan and you've got the possibility of Ryan Cessignon coming up against his twin brother Steven, not sure how often that would have happened in the past. And of course, this weekend, we would deny that piece of history, weren't we, as Darren Foos?

Fulham Squad Dynamics and Potential Changes

00:04:20
Speaker
didn't put Tyler Young on to face his old man, which he got a lot criticism of criticism and flat for that didn't he, but you can understand his situation as a manager. He's trying to win the game first and foremost and trying to get his team to progress to the next round, so whilst it was a bit of a shame, I think you have to understand the manager's decision in that.
00:04:42
Speaker
And if it is Mansfield, well Mansfield will be a new team for many Fulham fans and a new ground. They actually haven't

West Ham's Tactical Adjustments under Potter

00:04:50
Speaker
played Mansfield since the 1996-97 season where both teams were back in the older Vision 3. So there'll probably be a lot of people with that fixture being played tonight might be hoping for a Mansfield wing as they can tick off a new ground. What will the makeup of the squad be for that game?
00:05:06
Speaker
well who's to know i don't expect too much transfer business ins or outs but one player i did mention there who scored twice in the game at the london's name last season was andres perrera and it seems like his name isn't too far away from the headlines good bad or indifferent everyone has their views on Andreas Pereira and the talk doesn't seem to stop does it and he has been linked heavily with ah with a move back to Brazil talk of possibly Palmeiras looking at his situation and I think there was talks about his agent

Analyzing West Ham's Strengths and Weaknesses

00:05:40
Speaker
as well meetings with the player and possibly negotiating a new contract with Fulham I think it's clear that Marco Silva is a huge fan of the player the fact that he made him captain for the game against Watford
00:05:53
Speaker
is indicative of where he stands on the player and that he sees him as a huge player for him and he's been a huge player for him in his ah two and a half seasons at the club despite criticism and a lot of online negativity towards the player. Marco Silva has been very trustworthy of the player.

Game Predictions: Fulham vs West Ham

00:06:10
Speaker
There will be some games where he'll look back on and be disappointed with his performance but I do have some sympathy as I don't feel this is his best position.
00:06:19
Speaker
I think it's no coincidence the two goals he scored in this fixture last season was from a more advanced role and I think that is his best role but whatever Marco Silva asks of him I'm sure he's committed to doing it and if Fulham are to part ways with Andres Pereira it's going to have to take A substantial bid in my opinion for Marco Silva to entertain the idea of letting that player go. He's now experienced player in that group and I'm sure he won't want to let him go. The only way I can see him departing is if Fulham have a replacement lined up. in this window. If they don't then I can see it be in a similar situation to what we had with Joe Pelina, the Joe Pelina situation where he looked like he was going to buy Munich. Fun can get that replacement and he stayed and ended up going in the summer so it could be something like that. We'll just have to watch this space.
00:07:10
Speaker
Other bits of news I'd want to look at before focusing on this game. There's some positive news about Reece Nelson after suffering that injury going off against Brighton a little while back. It looks like he is ahead of schedule. He's recovering well from that hamstring injury and Marco Silva's been very positive in what he said about him. We might see him possibly before the end of the month or at the start of February. I know there has been talk in some quarters about Fulham possibly looking at that position to strengthen in January but with Ryan Sesignon's performance against Watford and the fact that Reece Nelson looks like he might be returning soon then I don't think that is a particular area that Fulham will need to be looking at.
00:07:52
Speaker
But so I think Reece Nelson has oppressed a lot of people during his time at Fulham. Obviously he had to wait a little while to get a start. ah He sustained that injury after he was having a run in the team. So I'm sure everyone's looking forward to having him back. Next up in part two, attention switches to the Hammers. I'll be talking a little bit about Graham Potter and Julian Lobbategi and what West Ham fans can expect from Potter.
00:08:18
Speaker
and i'll also be focusing on one or two of the players and what impact they can have for this game and for the rest of the season but before i do that let me tell you a bit about our sponsors here at the global sports podcast network we spent a lot of time selecting our delivery platform zencaster came out the clear winner with 4k video recording from your phone and ai editing that automatically removes all those ums and r's It's super easy to start a podcast that sounds great and is delivered efficiently. If you're ready to tell your story, check out the link in the show description to learn more about Zencaster. Right then, as promised, let's switch the attention from West London to East London and and let's have a look at West Ham and the situation they're in, of course, making that change. Moving on from Julian Lopategi, acting swiftly and going to Graham Potter.
00:09:14
Speaker
And just on Lopategi, let's start with him before moving on to Potter. It's always seemed like he's been under pressure from day one, hasn't it? I know West Ham fans weren't quite on board with him at the start of the season and there was a lot of expectation on the club given some of the signings they had made and the money they had spent in the summer window, especially on some of the attacking players and it's not quite worked out. He didn't get off to a great start.
00:09:38
Speaker
and from that moment on it's just seemed inevitable that that pressure would eventually take its toll and that West Ham they would look to make a change. You hear it all the time don't you whether it's in the media or whether it's West Ham you talk about wanting to play the West Ham way and what is the West Ham way I'm not quite sure what it is if you drew a diagram if you ah looked in a dictionary I'm not sure what the West Ham way tells you but their fans quite clearly have high expectations of where they want the club to be they want them to be competing with the so-called big six and in that in that sort of realm in that sort of echelon along with the likes of Aston Villa and Newcastle of course they have won a trophy in recent seasons so with that european trophy under David Moyes with a lot of managerial outgoings you do have sympathy and there is that element of surprise but with this one
00:10:29
Speaker
There's no surprise at all. I don't think it was handled in the best case scenario, was it? Because it it was clear to every man and his dog that Graham Potter was going to be the next West End manager, and yet they made Julian Lopategi come in and take first team training, which was... a little bit disrespectful to the man in my opinion i don't think that's the way you handle things to be quite honest you need that transparency there and i'm sure he himself would have known how the situation was even if he wasn't told at that moment in time he would have had an idea what was going on behind the scenes so yeah it could have been handled better but i think for westland fans
00:11:06
Speaker
you'll be happy that the change has been made quite quickly because you'll often see you you'll see with clubs they'll sack a manager and they don't have a plan today and you can wait two or three weeks and it's just wasted time isn't it you've got the interim caretaker manager in charge and you just want to get that new man in as quickly as possible with gra and with Graham Potter he would still put him in that bracket of young upcoming managers with a point to prove. Obviously he had an interesting time of it at Chelsea didn't he after establishing himself in the Premier League with Brighton and now he's come to a club here in West Ham where the expectations are kind of in the middle aren't they not quite on the level of Chelsea where you have to win trophies where
00:11:42
Speaker
success is demanded and even when they have had success it's not stopped them from sacking managers with West Ham. West Ham as I said are that club that are trying to get to that upper echelon and mix it with those so-called bigger at clubs whereas ah when he was in charge at Brighton he was allowed to build from a lower base and probably expectations weren't so high and he was allowed to get his ideals across without there being too much outside noise and expectation and demand for instant success and that's what got him his move to Chelsea isn't it and he's been out of work now since April 2023 so quite a long time now
00:12:22
Speaker
He has been linked with a lot of jobs in that time, though no bigger than the England one, of course. His name always seems to be in the mix, doesn't it? When ah you see Premier League managers sacked, but he's decided that this was the right opportunity for him. And you can see why West Ham are an established Premier League club now.
00:12:40
Speaker
and they do have some good plays he's got some good plays at his disposal but can Graham Potter work his magic and get this West Ham squad this West Ham group players to where their fans think they should be out of the FA Cup now so no distractions could say although I don't see how the FA Cup is a distraction especially for a team like West Ham will have aspirations ah to add to their trophy cabinet But going back to the West Ham way, I think the West Ham way, from what I understand, is winning football games, winning them in a style. It probably goes back to what you saw maybe in the early 2000s when, ah under Harry Redd that I think, where they did have that style about them with with some good
00:13:26
Speaker
good young players coming through, ah you're talking about your Joe Coles and your Frank Lampard, your real foods and answer, mixed with a little bit of a flair from further afield like São Paulo da Canu. So that's that's the last sort of West Ham group where I can think, yeah, that's that's the West Ham way, if that's the way they want to look at things. And Grim Potter, up just looking at him from his time at Brighton, he did instill that more possession-based football there, but I think first and foremost what he needs to address and what he needs to look at is the fundamentals before trying to implement a style and a swagger. You've got to walk before you can run and one of the problems this West Ham team has had recently is but as they've been shipping a lot of goals and I think one of the frustrations is when they have played against those bigger clubs the gap has just been so far. When they've taken hammerings at home against Arsenal and Liverpool and shipping a lot of goals it's just
00:14:20
Speaker
they all feel they haven't been competitive in those games because it's shown that if they're using those clubs as the benchmark it shows how far apart they have been. He obviously needs to go in and find out what is ah what is best 11 is going forward for the ah rest of the season and that comes with some difficulty to begin with because he does have injuries to certain personnel. Jared Bowen who's made captain is is a massive player for them and he's he's a player you can hang your hat on you know what you're going to get from Jared Bowen So they'll need him back sooner rather than later. I did watch a little bit of their game in the cup against Aston Villa and I thought for the first half they looked okay. They didn't look too bad. Lucas Paquette obviously getting on the score sheet which is something he hasn't managed to do a lot of this season and I think he'll be the first to hold his hand up and say his performances haven't been good enough because there's a player there and who over the course of the last couple of years has been linked with moves away for big money and you can see why at times given what he can do on the pitch for West Ham but we just haven't seen enough of it this season. and Maybe he's one of those players that has let Lord Pategi down and hasn't given his all and
00:15:26
Speaker
Maybe his head's been turned and he just hasn't been able to produce what we know he is capable of doing. And that goes for some of the other attacking players as well. Mohammed Kudas I thought would have had a better season. Having watched a fair bit of him last season and and early on this season, I thought there's a player there that he's He's destined for for bigger things with all respect to West End. There's a guy that should be playing in the Champions League season after season. He's that talented, but he just hasn't happened for him. And there's other players as well. Nicholas Falkrugg came in and I thought he was going to be
00:15:59
Speaker
the sign and they've been looking for in years because they've struggled in that department for that centre forward position having to rely on Mikhail Antonio who of course now due to the horrific accident he's going to be missing for the rest of the season so that looks like a problem position now with Falkberg actually injured as well so whether they do something in the market there you wouldn't be surprised at all Danny Ings who scored in the the fixture at Craven Cottage he could possibly be leading the line in in this game so there are problems there for Graham Potter but I think first and foremost he needs to make sure West Ham are at least competitive in games and and it concedes in almost two goals a game which just it quite frankly isn't good enough but so you know he is a manager Graham Potter who's having to rebuild himself we talk a lot about it don't we maybe players who have been at bigger clubs and it's not quite worked out for them and they've had to go elsewhere to rebuild their career well
00:16:53
Speaker
Graham Potter is certainly on a ah similar trajectory now and it's a big job for him because West Ham are a big club, great stadium, great facilities. but I don't think West Ham fans should expect too much too soon. They've got to get behind the manager and just appreciate that it can take time. I feel like at the Julian Lopategi there was just instant negativity right from the start. Wasn't helped obviously with the results not going their way. So it's important for Graham Potter. I know they lost this first game in the f FA Cup. A new competition now.
00:17:29
Speaker
and if they can get off to a great start then it just brings that feel good factor back doesn't it and then you can start to get on the roll and then maybe start looking up in the table towards where you want to be but yeah I think expectation needs to be a bit lower now than where it was in the summer I just think people were getting and slightly carried away with the money they had spent it hasn't worked out and It's not the first time we've seen a situation where players have come in in the summer and then they just haven't necessarily gelled. There's no doubt Lopategi, he takes a lot of flack and rightly so and criticism for West Ham's position in the league but I think one or two of their players have got up.
00:18:09
Speaker
got a look at themselves in the mirror and realise that their performances haven't been good enough and they should be doing a lot more and it would surprise you it's so often the way isn't when a new manager comes in all of a sudden players performance just chalking cheese isn't it and that's the business were we're in isn't it and fortunes can change very quickly yeah I think for West Ham fans it's it's not been a season to remember there's no Europe so the focus is all on the league then the Jared Bowen back because he's a big player for them on the pitch he's probably one of those captains that does his talking on the pitch leads by example so for them to have success this season if they want to look on first and foremost just make sure you're not in the mix of relegation you know because that would be an ultimate disaster wouldn't it at the start of the season people are talking about you being potential candidates for europe and then you get dragged into a relegation fight so
00:19:04
Speaker
Yeah, ah a good start is is paramount for Graeme Potter just to alleviate any of those fears that they can get dragged into it and then they can start looking and and building and trying to better what we've seen so far. There were decent signs against Villa but then it did capitulate a little bit in the second half. You can put that down to maybe a lack of confidence. They haven't been winning so many games recently. I think it is a good fit.
00:19:30
Speaker
but I think just calm yourselves, calm yourselves for now and don't set the expectations too high. Let him get on with it and we'll see what he can do. We'll see what he can do. We'll finish off with just a bit of a preview to this game, having a look at some key personnel, maybe some key battles on the pitch, some team news before finishing off with a prediction and seeing how this game might go.
00:19:58

Speaker
If West Ham are able to claim victory in this one, then they will create a little bit of history in the process, well at least for their manager. Graham Potters managed against Fulham on five separate occasions and has yet to taste victory with three draws and two defeats. I touched upon it briefly earlier, didn't I, about Fulham's good away form this season, the fact that they've only lost two games and they've been difficult to beat. Well they've been tough to beat throughout the season haven't they, having only lost four Premier League games in 20. It is a bit curious though why away from home defensively at least they seem a lot better. They've only conceded the 10 goals in their games on their travels and that's only bettered by Spurs.
00:21:06
Speaker
whereas they can see the 17 at home and we've seen in the last couple of games against Bournemouth and Ipswich they have looked a bit suspect at the bat some defensive errors leading to goals but it seems like away for a moment it almost suits them the way they set up teams coming on to them and they can they can combat that and it doesn't seem to be much of a problem for them they if you watch their away games when they've been to Anfield and other grounds like the Etihad and Tottenham recently they have always posed a f threat and they seem to play with a more fluid style away from home i'm not sure why that is but probably does come from the fact that there is more of ah an onus on the home side too
00:21:42
Speaker
to push on and to attack and they've got the players to exploit that. Whilst the four defeats, something to be proud about at this stage, they will definitely want to convert some of those draws into wins and it will be interesting to see how they set up for this game. Noticable that in the cup game against Watford they reverted back to that back four, they reverted on a back four at half time, didn't they, against Ipswich and I think I speak for everyone when I say that the back five needs to be binned now.
00:22:08
Speaker
it was something he trialled against Chelsea it worked and then carried on probably for a game too many he didn't it going into that Ipswich game but time to go back to the triad and trust it and that's four at the back and I think Joachim Anderson although in my post-match piece against Watford noted that he didn't have to do so much defensive work. He just looked a lot more comfortable playing in that system. When he has played in the back five, he has looked a bit shaky at times, surprisingly so in a way, because it's not like he's completely unfamiliar with that system. He played in that system at Crystal Palace and he played in that system when he was at Fulham on loans several years ago, but maybe it's just the fact that he was out with injury for
00:22:47
Speaker
a few weeks he looked a bit rusty and still trying to find his feet but yeah as i said he looked a lot more comfortable in the game against Watford and i would think he would now take Isidioff's place and you'll see Joachim Anderson and Calvin Bassi at the back obviously they will be making some changes from the cup game you'll see Anthony Robinson come back in I guess midfield is the interesting interesting one isn't it what they do there because he spoke positively about Sander Berger that he was recovering well from his injury from his from his setback which he sustained against Southampton but whether this game will come too soon for him to start it remains to be seen it's also interesting as well the way silver will choose to set up in games because I i get the feeling
00:23:31
Speaker
he feels that maybe the sander berger sasa lukic partnership is suited for specific games when you're playing against the big six side and maybe you're not going to have so much possession but in games against the other mid-table teams and teams in the at the lower end of the table I get the feeling that that he wants to operate with those more attacking minded players. That's why we've seen Andreas Pereira and Emil Smith row. Emil Smith row again is a player coming back from injury got the start Dini against Watford so will he start? I think we could probably pick eight or nine of the starting eleven for this game but then
00:24:04
Speaker
you know, it's what he does in that centre area. We know Sasa Lukic will play, but what is the combination? Will it be Sasa Lukic alongside Sander Berger from the start? Or will it be back to dual eights, in in which case Andreas Pereira plays with Emil Smithro? Or will Tom Caine get a start? I don't think Tom Caine will start.
00:24:24
Speaker
I think for this one you'll probably see the way they set up at the start of the season and that's with Andreas Pereira and Emil Smith row with Sander Berger coming back from injury he's not the type Marco Silva that will rush players back in if he doesn't feel it's necessary so for Sander Berger maybe looking at the Leicester game as a more likely possibility for him to start The other one, of course, is that Rodrigo Miniz, he came off injured in against Watford, which is a shame because I thought he had a really good first half, took his goal extremely well. I'm not up to date on what the latest is in that scenario. Not that he would start because Raul Jimenez is back in form, having scored three in his last two. He's in double figures for the season as well, so hopefully that confidence that he's in, that vein of goal so informed, can continue now that we're in the second half of the season.
00:25:12
Speaker
as far as the home side are concerned well they do have some problems of their own don't they especially in the forward position with antonio being out forcrud being out and dannyings possibly getting a rare start for them dannyings will have good memories of playing full he popped up didn't he with that equalizer in the 95th minute and suspected that at the time that would be one of very few goals for dannyings this season and but missing jarab bowen is a big blow for them I feel, not just for this game but future games and however long he is out they'll hope to have him back as soon as possible because he's their talisman, he's their captain, he's the guy that provides the goals, he provides the assists as well and in a difficult season I think he's one of the few that can actually hold his head high and say I've contributed
00:25:57
Speaker
whereas others I think have underperformed and they'll want to get that out of the likes of Packetaar and Somerville, Somerville of course coming from Leeds using the player of the season and the championship last season and Kudas as well so they do have players in and around the striker there that can make things happen that can cause problems but Alternity Fulham will fancy their chances as they know West Ham have been leaking goals as well so the atmosphere will be very interesting as well probably different from what it would have been a week ago if the manager was still under pressure but with a new manager even if they do go or go behind early on the game I'm sure the West Ham fans will stick by their team and they'll want to see something to give them hope for the rest of the season. I wouldn't get too caught up on what happens in this game from a West Ham perspective and the way they play because I do feel that it is going to take time
00:26:45
Speaker
Every fan clings on to the hope that they get that new manager lift and they go on the run of winning games and certainly there's enough quality in that in that squad, that group of players that they can propel themselves up the league but then they have to look at themselves in the mirror and take ownership for some of the their frailties this season and and step up to the plate and do better.
00:27:05
Speaker
The other selection headache I suppose dilemma he has is who he plays a left back or the full back positions where we see Sufal at right back and Wan Basaka over to left back. I know he played the young lad Skars in the cup. I think who I was commentating on again gave him another match. So will he go without or will he go with the more experience? I suspect he'll go with the experience. We'll see Wan Basaka on the left.
00:27:31
Speaker
How do I see this game going? Even though Graham Potter has been brought in to bring a bit of style and swagger to West Ham, as well as being able to guide them to winning games again, I do think it's going to take a little bit of time. So I do see Fulham being the ones probably that will take control of this game. Maybe West Ham will have less of the ball. But with that being said though,
00:27:55
Speaker
and Fulham's tendency to draw games, I can actually see this being another draw, another 1-1 draw, just like it was earlier in the season, another game where Fulham go in front and end up conceding a goal maybe, not in the 95th minute, but they'll keep up their unbeaten run and make it 10 games. Also keep up that unbeaten run of games against fellow London sides. I think at the start of the season, a point away at West Ham, you look at that on paper, you'd probably be satisfied with that.
00:28:25

But I think there is some frustration at the minute. Just the fact that you look at the table and you think there's so many points that have been dropped from winning positions and and positions of dominance in games where they haven't been able to con convert one goal leads into two goal leads and yeah hopefully for the second half of the season now that they can sort of right those wrongs. But I can see it being another draw.

another draw in what is another busy week with Leicester away on Saturday. That'll wrap things up for our preview to the game at the London Stadium. Thank you all once again for listening and be sure to catch us next time as we will be back without review of all the events of the game. Hope to see you all for that.
