In today’s episode of the Daily Newcastle podcast, our slightly hammered host Michael Grahamslaw breaks down Newcastle United’s monumental 2–1 victory over Manchester City — only their third win over City in two decades.

We analyse the tactical impact of Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento returning to the starting XI, Harvey Barnes’ match-winning quality, and Bruno Guimarães’ dominant display in midfield. From key chances and VAR doubts to defensive resilience and a revitalised counter-attacking identity, this episode examines why this result might represent the true turning point of Newcastle’s season.

Michael also recaps the major Premier League results across the weekend and looks ahead to what this win means for the club’s position in a tightly packed league table.

A must-listen for anyone following Newcastle United’s unpredictable but thrilling campaign.

Introduction and Midnight Recording Debate

Hello ladies, gentlemen and everybody in between. Welcome to the Daily Newcastle Podcast. My name is Michael Grahamslow and today we are here to discuss Newcastle United's third win against Manchester City in 20 Now I'll be completely honest, I've been struck with a little bit of a dilemma today.
00:00:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
So it's currently midnight as I'm re-recording this and I've had a little bit of a debate with myself of whether I should record this right now or in the morning as a sober little bird after a few hours at the gym to wake myself up.
00:00:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I thought, you know what, bugger it, I'm much more fun as an individual after a few beers and hopefully you'll agree. But enough about this little

Pre-Match Analysis: Newcastle vs Manchester City

scoundrel. Newcastle went into the game against an in-form Manchester City just one point off the drop zone. And after some very interesting 3pm games on Saturday, there was just eight points separating 15th place Newcastle and 4th place Chelsea. So win, albeit unlikely. was going to be invaluable for the Magpies. And even in defeat, a were a were win, should I say, would look a lot worse than it actually was.
00:01:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then if we look at the line-up, the first thing that was very, very clear was the reintroduction of Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento back in the side, which meant if Newcastle got battered here,
00:01:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Everything I had spoken about for the last few weeks about Newcastle United's biggest issue would have been a whole load of fresh shiza.
00:02:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
But like I've said for weeks, our biggest influence... is our fullbacks and our biggest issue has been the lack of fluidity in those positions because of Kieran Trippier and Dan Byrne, who have a combined age older than my parents. um Which, you know...
00:02:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
canny distance. I look old. So let's be honest. it's It's an old age for a footballer. But today, that definitely was not an issue.
00:02:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Andy Gordon also missed out with Harvey Barnes coming at the side. And wow. What a performance by Harvey Barnes.

Player Performance Highlights

00:02:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Clearly, Scotland's monumental World Cup qualifications got into his head, and he's thinking, wow, I can go to the US next year. And he puts in a performance that made even Steve Clarke stand up and go, wow um I'll be honest, at the start of the campaign, I said Harvey Barnes would be our player of the campaign, and after 10 games, I said, you know what?
00:03:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Maybe I'm an idiot. um Thankfully, the clinical finishing of Harvey Barnes and his direct style of play meshed beautifully with Lewis Hall. Newcastle United had a serious outlet on that left-hand side and both Hall and Barnes played fantastically.
00:03:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
But going into the game... That big debate came in midfield. Because let's be honest, a lot of people said before the game, myself included, that Joel Inton...
00:03:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
maybe should miss a couple of games. Maybe he needs a bit of more of a rest. And just just maybe Jacob Ramsey should go there instead. And I'll be honest, I would have loved to have seen Jacob Ramsey in there from the start because I think he's a monumental talent that we just haven't had the the run of games to see that just yet. And when Big Joe plays, he is either the GOAT ...or the WOT......and quite often right now he's been the worst of all time......but today he was monumental......he stood up and he was absolutely fantastic......and while there's no in-between......when Joe Linton plays like the GOAT......there's no one beating him......and he was absolutely fantastic today......but to go into the game...

Newcastle's Aggressive Gameplay

00:04:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
The first thing that was evident from me for the first whistle was the fight and determination that Newcastle had. It's the first time in weeks I have actually seen us be strong in the tackle. And to be honest, from watching the game, the first thing I thought of was...
00:04:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
I feel like we've put more tackles in here than we have in our last like five games combined. and It turns out it's not as impactful as that. and Newcastle put 14 tackles in in the first half, and which is more than any of our defeats this season except for Brighton. And that's only because we had an influx of tackles in the last 10 minutes.
00:05:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But it is immediate difference of intent. Newcastle came into the game with the idea of putting City under pressure early on. And for some reason, we are so good at doing that against teams that are better than us.
00:05:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I don't know if that's because Newcastle had less of the possession and that's when we're at our best. Because we can sit back, hit teams on the counter-attack. But when it comes to players in the proportion of the player they have or time at their feet, Harvey Barnes had the ball so much more than we see Wingers traditionally have for us.
00:05:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Particularly in recent times, Gordon and Murphy or Alanga, whichever one it is, feel like they rarely touch the ball. I felt like Barnes in the first half in particular had the ball almost as much as... i don't want to say Joe Linton... As Tonali and Bruno, sorry. But certainly around about the same as Joe Linton. And when your wingers are getting on the ball that much...
00:06:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
you can cause issues for opponents. um And it felt like we had control of the game, even though we only had about, I don't know, that i can't remember the exact stat off the top of my head, but about 30%, 35% possession.
00:06:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
We had control of the game, and other than that Erling Haaland chance where he chips it ah beyond Pope and it it realistically goes nowhere near, it's Erling Haaland at St. James' Park, he does nothing. and We've seen it time and time again. Newcastle United actually had the better chances. you know Barnes had a great chance within 30 seconds.
00:06:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
You like to think maybe 15 minutes later, all that goes in the back of the net once he's had a touch. ah But it was straight to Juan Luigi Donnarumma. um Great pressing by Newcastle by that as well. Early intent. and Joe Linton is the one that ends up winning the ball back.
00:07:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Comes out to Harvey Barnes. First time strike. It just doesn't get the curl on it. It's unfortunate. doesn't cost Newcastle on this occasion, but it really is a poor finish. um It does have to be said that City...
00:07:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Could have and probably should have had a penalty in my opinion.

Key Moments: Penalty Controversy and Goal Exchange

00:07:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
um It's a slight tackle by Fabian Scher on Phil Foden. Foden does get his shot away before the tackle, which for me, thing i know it's not the rules, which fair enough, you've got to follow the rules, but I think it's one of those where Fabian Scher impacts...
00:07:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Phil Foden, about two seconds, one or two seconds, after the shot is taken. So he doesn't really impact the player at all. um And I think that's the reason it wasn't really given. Schal was a little bit reckless, a little bit dangerous.
00:07:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think if Foden takes a touch and he tries to knock to the side and Schal takes him out... It's 100% a penalty, but because he's got his shot away, Shaw doesn't impact the shot at all, really, except from the pressure he puts on the ball before it's taken, which you can't really see when you're going for a penalty. It just looks like Foden's took a shot.
00:08:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um... It hasn't really impacted him at all. And both sides as well after that really should have scored. Barnes fires wide after great work from Valtemar. Barnes has an open open goal pretty much.
00:08:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah So we should have had a hat-trick today. And then Phil Foden did almost the same. It's a bit of a harder chance after some great work from Brian Shirky. ah who came from Leon and absolutely fantastic player. Donnarumma also made two pretty decent saves during the game. I mean, the two shots that are almost straight at him from Nick Valtomada. The first is a header from a high cross from Jacob Murphy. And then as a low drive from an early Jacob Murphy cross, ah the shots taken by Volta Marder again, whose finishing wasn't fantastic today, and but he was a lot more like a centre-forward, playing off the last man. Sometimes he would come deep, but you also saw him get beyond the defender a bit more, and which we didn't see in previous fixtures. And if he can do that,
00:09:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
then he is the striker that Newcastle want and Newcastle need. But we hadn't seen that before today, really, where he was playing on the last man. um So credit to him. He had an excellent performance, just missing the goal. Finishing wasn't fantastic. um But he did a lot of damage. And because he was able to get in behind, City didn't know. Ruben Diaz, Wadiol, etc. Didn't know if he was going try and get in behind or if he was going to come short to try and get the ball. And when that happens, it causes chaos.
00:09:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah We're going to go into the goals in just a moment. But I think we're at that 10-minute mark pretty much. Let's get into our first advert. And this one is from Bionique.
00:10:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now into the meat of the action, the main course, and it was absolutely perfect for Newcastle United, who took the lead about 60 minutes in. It's a beautiful, it's not a one two it's 1-2-3 run.
00:11:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
from Harvey Barnes and Bruno Gamares, who play it between them two or three times, and it finishes with Harvey Barnes firing Loba, right, beyond Donnarumma, and I'll be honest, it's a shot from outside the box, it's low, it's hard, it's driven, it's For anyone that plays the most recent FIFA EAFC 26, it's one you see all the time. The load-driven shot is absolutely unbelievable. And Harvey Barnes, not a single other player can do that for Newcastle United.
00:11:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
He offers something completely different on the wing in regards to finishing. He is better than Anthony Gordon. He is better than Jacob Murphy. He's better than Antti Alanga at those particular finishes. There's a lot that he doesn't do well, but when it comes to moments like this, there isn't a single Newcastle United player who is better than Harvey Barnes in those positions.
00:11:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
However... City equalised almost immediately. um After not looking dangerous for 60 odd minutes, Newcastle scored and immediately City looked dangerous again.
00:12:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
um It was, I don't want to say lucky, because it's going in no matter what happens, really, with the touch. But City end up with a corner, it results in a low-driven shot from Bernardo Silva.
00:12:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's blocked by Lewis Hall, but then it falls to Ruben Diaz, who... by the way, at this point, hasn't scored in four years, and his last goal was against Newcastle United. So no surprise, he scores once again here.
00:12:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah He gets his shot away, goes in between two or three defenders, and it goes in between the legs of Fabian Scher, who tries to close his legs, but it hits off the inside of his left leg and goes into the back of the net.
00:12:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's be honest, it's just a very unlucky goal for Newcastle. And when you're thinking in there, when things aren't... me it's them I'm just going to say it's the motto of teams in a relegation battle, isn't it? When things aren't going your way, they just simply never go your way. Now, what I will say Newcastle reacted significantly better than you would ever expect a relegation candidate to do so. particularly against Manchester City. They get a couple of corners. They get a couple of shots away. And then Barnes does excellently to recycle a corner on the seventh around about the 70th minute. He knocks it out wide. The cross comes in. ah It might be from Jacob Murphy again. I can't remember off the top of my head. It might be from Livermanto. Yeah.
00:13:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Valdemar heads it across goal instead of at goal. And Bruno Guimara fires his header against the bar. you're thinking, oh my God, what a chance. And then the rebound drops to Harvey Barnes, who fires it into the roof of the net. And then there was a VAR decision for about two, three minutes.
00:14:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
But Barnes is behind Bruno when the header is taken. And Bruno is just onside. It didn't take too long. Probably still more than I would have liked.
00:14:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
But Newcastle fans got the chance to celebrate twice. And how often do we celebrate a winning goal against Manchester City? But after Newcastle scored the second, it has to be said, City it barely touched Newcastle.
00:14:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the hosts were deserved winners.

Impact of Livramento and Hall on Newcastle's Future

00:14:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Both teams had good chances in the first half, but Newcastle could have scored four a today, and I don't think City fans would have really been too disheartened by it. Newcastle were just very, very good. City could have got two or three as well, depending on the performance. Typically, they do, we even if they don't deserve it against Newcastle. But this is the first time in a very long time can definitively say that Newcastle United deserved to beat Manchester City.
00:15:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I do want to stress... Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall pressed so highly today, which we can't do with Kieran Trippier and Dan Byrne.
00:15:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
And let me tell you, if those two stay fit, Newcastle United will get Champions League football next season. I do not care who gets injured. Those two are so essential to how Newcastle United play. And this season, they are irreplaceable. You could sack off Volta Marder. You could sack off Anthony Gordon. You could sack off Bruno Gammades. You could sack off Sandro Tonali. As long as you have those two full-backs playing, and I want to add, every single player I mention there is absolutely fantastic. But if you have Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall playing, Newcastle United will perform well. They are that good.
00:16:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they're essential to how we play, and they're irreplaceable. So Newcastle now sit in 14th place, four points off the drop, and four points off fifth.
00:16:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
But put it this way, by the time the derby comes along, Newcastle could be fifth, or nineteenth And you wouldn't be surprised either way, really. The league is that tight.
00:16:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
However, there's always one match that sits as a turning point for us in

Significance of Victory and Other Premier League Highlights

00:16:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
the season. Last year, it was Nottingham Forest, the hard-fought win before the Arsenal game. And at that point, everyone was saying Eddie Howe was under pressure.
00:16:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
One year later... Eddie Howe is under pressure going into a game against Manchester City and he pulls off one of the best tactical performances he's had in the last year for Newcastle. It was a truly brilliant performance. And I will say, I said before the game on X, um it only takes one game to be a catalyst for this season.
00:17:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I don't think it'll be today, but it's coming soon. Little do I know, it's already happened now. And this catalyst should be the thing that changes our season for the better. And I'll be honest, last time out, we were like 10 points off where we wanted to be. This time around, we're four points off fifth, and we're only just getting started. So, Newcastle, the potential is incredible this season. They just need to get that final product right. And I think we're going to do so because the two fullbacks are back and we can play the way we want to play.
00:17:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
But elsewhere... there were routine wins for crystal palace and Chelsea, huge wins for nottenham forest against Liverpool forest, one three nil and Fulham beat the inform neighbors of Newcastle, Sunderland one nil Fulham dominated much of the game, but only managed to get the goal laid on. Um, and considering their form, it's a massive win for Fulham to avoid them being dragged into that relegation dog fight.
00:18:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Two great games as well between Brighton and Brentford. Uh, which ended in a late home win. Yankouba Minte and put in a but pretty good performance in there as well. And then a late draw between Bournemouth and West Ham, which saw former Magpie Callum Wilson pick up two, i want to say Poachers goal, but the second is an absolutely excellent finish.
00:18:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
in a 2-2 draw. Almost, well, let's be honest, Callum Wilson, he's like he's got a place in the heart of most Newcastle fans, and it's brilliant to see him score those kind goals. I just wish he kind of could have done it on the opening day of the season against Sunderland, but yenna you you kind of have everything.
00:18:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I'll take the win against City with open arms.
