Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Newcastle podcast. I'm a stranger to this now and I'm really nervous to be hosting this one because it's my first one in it feels like months. um So hello everyone, um I'm back who knows for how long um and I am joined today by just one co-host um because the rest of us are all busy um and I am joined by my co-host Michael, how are you?

Podcast Scheduling Challenges

00:00:41
MG
Doing well, doing well, yeah. as we As we know, Christmas is a while. We're not even at Christmas yet, but it's a very, very long time of the year. So it's going to be a nightmare, but we're going to stay daily. We're going to stay committed no matter what it takes.
00:00:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
we'll be fine um yeah so we say and we're probably not going to be available for the next two weeks but it's fine um yeah i'm hoping we're going to get some time in to do a full team um christmas special podcast like we did last year yeah so maybe we might to start planning on that but for now it is me and michael um we are recording on
00:00:54
MG
So he says.
00:01:06
MG
Yeah. Keep the tradition alive. Yeah.

Newcastle vs. Pep's Team: An Unexpected Victory?

00:01:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Monday evening so by the time you guys listen to this it shall be Tuesday and I thought we could start by um reviewing um what was a fantastic game on Saturday um and I will I am ashamed of myself because on my Super 6 I predicted a Newcastle defeat can't believe it the um
00:01:34
MG
I can't blame you, I can't be honest. i was I was about to joke and say, how could you? But I'm pretty sure 90%

Newcastle's Tactics Success

00:01:41
MG
Newcastle fans are going into it thinking, well, at least Sutton looked lost.
00:01:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
honestly the
00:01:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
the one time I don't put a draw or a new capital win and we go in and we go and win not of that we go and win and beat Pep's team for the first time under Eddie Howell so that's fantastic um so yeah I mean with the likes of the West Ham and Brentford game who could blame me but I'm hanging my head in shame before you all come for me so yes um so let's just start by um what did we think
00:02:12
MG
Yeah, I mean, for me, it's the performance of the season so far. And I know there's ah there's a couple of talking and points, obviously, the controversy behind the second goal, etc., um Exactly the same thing happened the next day, Aston Villa-Leeds.
00:02:25
MG
So if it's consistent, I don't really care.
00:02:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep.
00:02:27
MG
um But for us, it's it's one of those where it felt like the tactic finally worked with Walter Marder up top.
00:02:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:02:35
MG
He was coming deep and we were seeing the Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy 10 yards higher. And whether that's because we finally had Lewis Hall and Tino Liveramento playing together,
00:02:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:02:48
MG
who Both of whom I thought were were very good. I saw a few people slating Hall. So he made a couple of mistakes. I thought he was excellent. and But as you can tell by my match review, I was fairly enamoured with alcohol. So maybe I was seeing things differently. and But I thought we were absolutely excellent. The tactic finally worked.
00:03:09
MG
It's just a case of, obviously, will it work against lesser

Player Performances and Future Potential

00:03:12
MG
teams as well? But so good to see us finally get one over on City because they do tend to get a few dodgy decisions against us as well.
00:03:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, i agree. So um I was actually out on Saturday evening um for a friend's birthday. So I actually, which clashed with the game so I didn't watch it until Sunday um very inconvenient I know um but I was getting updates literally minutely by um a friend of mine um and yeah from watching the highlights I agree with the Volta Mardi up top it seems like something has just clicked but i just want to point out that how much I know we all say it um
00:03:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
But the difference between having Hall and Tino in the team to not having them in the team is massive.
00:04:01
MG
It's unreal, isn't it?
00:04:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:04:03
MG
It's incredible.
00:04:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
And you don't realise, obviously, we knew when Tino went down injured a couple of, well, a couple of, well, say a couple of weeks ago, a month or two ago now, um we knew it was going to be a big loss. But him coming back, Lewis Hall being back, I'm just like, there's got to be the future of England, right?
00:04:13
MG
Yeah.
00:04:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Got to be.
00:04:21
MG
I think the only player that could be up there with Lewis Hall for the left-back position was Nico O'Reilly, who I will say thought i had a good a good game against us, if I'm completely honest.
00:04:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep. Yep.
00:04:31
MG
and Tino could also play there if need be. Right-backers, obviously. We're a little stacked with England, but... Tino and Liverpool and Lewis Hall means no matter who's there, those two are going to be centrepieces for England, at least in the squad, for the next 10 years for me. And to do that, put those kind of performances in against Manchester City. Hall's done it against Arsenal and Liverpool as well. Liverpool has put in decent performances against some top sides as well. They've shown they can do it on

Premier League Standings and Upcoming Fixtures

00:05:00
MG
the big stage. They've shown they can do it against lesser teams as well. And it just showed how much we missed them.
00:05:06
MG
Those two great performances.
00:05:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah 100 completely completely agree um and i love them both um i was thinking to myself when i was um watching obviously we we all we all have been um really critical of the games that we've been losing and the games that we This is why I predicted a Newcastle defeat, because obviously we've gone from the Brentford and West Ham games to look like pinching two passes together to then play in like that on on Saturday afternoon or Saturday evening. um And I thought to myself, that's kind of the result that can probably kickstart.
00:05:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, I say kickstart our season. We're flip in flipping November. But it's a game like that that can really kickstart some confidence um and get the season flowing.
00:05:45
MG
and the up
00:05:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So, yeah, if we can keep the likes of Tino and Hall fit, they'd both be going to the World Cup

Newcastle vs. Everton: Game Preview

00:05:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
for me. if Well, particularly Lewis Hall, obviously.
00:05:55
MG
Yeah.
00:05:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
they' both be going. um ah So, yeah, if we can keep the likes of them fit, um I think we're probably in for quite an exciting period of time. um Another player that I just want to talk about real quick is one player that we have all not been enamoured with.
00:06:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's the man who scored both the goals, Mr.
00:06:14
MG
Yeah. ah ah
00:06:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Harvey Barnes. When I seen those two notifications come through, was thinking, What's happening? Because he missed a sitter before that. He missed an absolute sitter before that.
00:06:23
MG
yeah
00:06:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I was thinking, here we go. We're in for one of these. um Yeah. What do you make of that?
00:06:30
MG
We saw the best and the worst of Harvey Barnes within about 60 minutes. First 30 seconds, he tries to curl one in. It's straight at Donnarumma. And you're thinking, it's his first touch of the game. You can let him off.
00:06:43
MG
And then we saw, I believe, in the Barcelona game, Anthony Gordon did exactly the same thing. and I might be thinking of the wrong game. But a ball comes in and he's in there at the back post and he puts it wide. And you're thinking, I'm not sure how he's missed.
00:06:55
MG
And then for the goal...
00:06:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep.
00:06:58
MG
beautiful one, two, three with Bruno Gamares and he just buries it in the corner and you're thinking, that's the Harvey Barnes we've needed all season.
00:07:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
So good. Mm-hmm.
00:07:05
MG
And when you think he hasn't exactly been great this season, I remember it was about four games ago, I was laughing at myself for saying he'd be Newcastle's player of the season.
00:07:16
MG
He's now a top goal scorer alongside Vultemar. So I'm happy.
00:07:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, no.
00:07:20
MG
I think he's a brilliant player. And when Gordon hasn't been doing anything since January, um you kind of need your backups to step up. And ah weve we've been talking about England.
00:07:31
MG
Anthony Gordon's worried about Marcus Rashford coming in there. He might have to worry about Harvey Barnes taking his place for England and for Newcastle because he is looking a lot better.
00:07:42
MG
But again, you've got to stop putting the sitters in the back of the net, son. There's no point in scoring 30, 25-yard screamers if you cannot put the ball in an open net, man.

Champions League Strategy Against Marseille

00:07:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know, honestly, I've seen it and I was thinking, I think it's even harder to miss that than it is to, um, actually score it.
00:08:01
MG
Yeah,
00:08:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
But that is just a new category.
00:08:04
MG
yeah absolutely.
00:08:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's always a new category. We make things hard for ourselves, but it was a fantastic game. Um, and another little, um, well, two shout outs really, um, Malik Chow.
00:08:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
I, can we maybe just fling AC Milan next to 20 million or something? I feel like we've absolutely had a steal, um, with him and Tonali, um,
00:08:24
MG
Yeah, he's incredible, isn't he?
00:08:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
we are a complete different side with him. um And I, he really excites me as a player and I think he's fantastic. um And between, i mean, that back four on Saturday were just, I know but there's a couple of mistakes from Lewis Hall, but again, he's still, I guess, settling in and he's, you know, wiping off the cobwebs.
00:08:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
But bet between them likely between all four of them, just thought that was a defence that um was, you know, just looked so confident. And I remember seeing something on Twitter before we before the game thingied, and it was um a picture of Phil Foden, Erlen Harland and someone else. And it was captioned, Newcastle's defence won't know what hit them.
00:08:44
MG
Yeah, he's just come back, hasn't he?
00:09:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Really?
00:09:09
MG
We did.
00:09:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:09:09
MG
And we dealt with it very easily.
00:09:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
think we dealt with it very easily, to be honest. um Yeah, and we also seem to have rattled um Mr Pep Guardiola at the end. with him in, well, I don't know what was said, and and not really being confirmed.
00:09:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Pep Guardiola said he's an emotional guy.
00:09:24
MG
Yeah.
00:09:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:09:26
MG
Yeah.
00:09:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
But nothing's been confirmed, so I'd love to know what's being said.
00:09:27
MG
It's one of those. z saids He said he was telling Bruno how good he is and stuff like that. I don't know what he was telling the cameraman, I'll tell you that, because he's full-on gone up and grabbed him.
00:09:37
MG
And I think if that's Jose Mourinho, the whole of England is burst into flames.
00:09:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not happy.
00:09:44
MG
um And we don't have a country day to to live in because everyone would be raging because it's Pep.
00:09:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:09:50
MG
It's, oh, yeah, well, you know, it was a bit controversial, wasn't it? na No, no, there's love of Pep.
00:09:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
best manager in the league yeah
00:09:55
MG
No, I'm not having that. But, yeah, back to Malik Chow. He is genuinely... looking like one of the best centre-backs in the league at the moment. And that is a big call, considering you know he's playing for a side in 15th. But I thought the thing for me, and I'd seen this when a little bit when he'd left Milan, is that Milan relied on him to play out with the ball a lot more than what Newcastle do.
00:10:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
hmm
00:10:21
MG
And that's where apparently he struggles.
00:10:23
MG
I've seen him look brilliant on the ball for Newcastle. But with Fabian Scherer alongside him, instead of Sven Botman,
00:10:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I agree.
00:10:30
MG
Let's be honest, Bottman, while a great defender, isn't great with the ball at his feet. um A lot of the times, sometimes he can do those little mazy runs, but passing-wise, he's not fantastic. Fabian Shea, that takes a lot of the pressure off Malik Chau in that position.
00:10:46
MG
And I think, genuinely, those two could be a better combination for us than... Sven Botman and Malik Chow, but we'll see how we do against the lesser teams as well because it's you know we do turn up against the big teams.
00:11:00
MG
We're known for doing that. It's when you play, let's be honest, who's the next?
00:11:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:11:05
MG
Everton's a tough game, and particularly going to the Hill Dickinson now.
00:11:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's going to be a tough game.
00:11:09
MG
I think Burnley. um you know When you're playing someone like Burnley, if you have Cher and Malik Chow there, see how they do against those teams because let's be honest,
00:11:20
MG
you kind of just turn up for four games in a season.
00:11:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
No. So our next question and as long as I've got this right, let me just double check. so I've got it sitting up here. as if If I'm right, our next Premier League games are Everton away on the 29th of November.
00:11:36
MG
Yeah.
00:11:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
um We've got Tottenham um on the 2nd of December.
00:11:38
MG
Tough one.
00:11:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is that Carabao Cup?
00:11:42
MG
Yeah.
00:11:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, it can't be Carabao Cup.
00:11:43
MG
No, no, late night Premier League game. Yeah.
00:11:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's late night Premier League. God, it is late. It's Tuesday, quarter past eight. um And then we've got, again, like you say, on the Saturday the 6th, Burnley.
00:11:49
MG
Yeah.
00:11:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then we have, I'm talking Premier League only here, We've then got the ah good old Derby on the 14th of December. um So that's our next
00:12:01
MG
Easy. We'll be above them by then.
00:12:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
i that's our next four Premier League games.
00:12:05
MG
ah
00:12:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, two of them are at home, of two of them are away.
00:12:09
MG
Yeah.
00:12:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
um You are right. How do you see us going against these bunch, as in Everton, Tottenham, Burnley and Sunderland? um I think you're right. I think Everton's going to be a bit more of a test than what we think. always think Everton's our bogey team as well.
00:12:25
MG
Yeah, I don't like playing of it, and I still remember the...
00:12:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:12:27
MG
um the game where paul we were comfortable until the 80th minute, polled him, it came on. and then gave away a penalty pretty much straight away. That still gives me me nightmares. um The game last season, the 0-0 at Goodison.
00:12:41
MG
Anthony Gordon missing a penalty. More nightmares. um the only thing the The only thing that lets me sleep at night is thinking about T-Rex arms trying to catch a goal a gu in the top corner or one of the ones he fumbled for Jose Perez.
00:12:54
MG
um But yeah, on a serious note, I think Everton's going to be a really tough game. i think I do think we'll get a point because I'm not impressed by them. really at all. They play literally in a couple of hours against Manchester United.
00:13:08
MG
I think Man United should win that quite comfortably.
00:13:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
They do. Yeah.
00:13:11
MG
Everton don't have much in attack for me, and they won't against us either. But then again, neither did West Ham.
00:13:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm. A bit of form, which is fantastic.
00:13:18
MG
They only had Callum Wilson. So it really is a tough one. But yeah, I think the two home games, Burnley and Spurs, let's be honest, a Spurs are dreadful. um Frank might even be sacked by the time that game comes around.
00:13:32
MG
um But I think we win those two quite comfortably. That puts us on 21, even if we don't get anything against Everton.
00:13:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm.
00:13:40
MG
I think we'll get a draw. ah the Hill Dickinson win the two home games we go into the derby on it in a decent bit of form um we then have 22 points I think um so i think we'd be above Sunderland they do have yeah so they've got Bournemouth at home Liverpool away, which, to be fair, is three points these days. And then Manchester City away. So there it is there is actually a real chance now, looking at that we could be above Sunderland-Cundarby day. And although it looks you know it looks bad for Newcastle now, you know the local, the Berser above were 15th, we could easily be in the top four when that game comes around. It's that tight.
00:14:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah the top 10 is really tight by the way it like obviously you know that you're probably looking at the table but i was looking at the table yesterday and it is really tight so i did think it does look bad in the grand scheme of things and in the grand scheme of things sorry it's not that bad because it's it is quite tight um
00:14:24
MG
Yeah.
00:14:37
MG
Yeah.
00:14:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
other than Arsenal, who are just completely, um well, they're way ahead now.
00:14:42
MG
Yeah, you've got one good team at the top and one terrible team at the bottom.
00:14:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
At the bottom, yeah.
00:14:45
MG
ah
00:14:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the rest are all, all you know, in in distance to each other.
00:14:48
MG
The rest are all right.
00:14:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. So, um yeah, I agree with you there.
00:14:50
MG
Yeah.
00:14:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Right. I suppose I probably will keep that. um I'll finish this bit here. We'll go to our first ad and then we'll talk about our game tomorrow.
00:15:03
MG
Sounds good.
00:15:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Perfect. Okay. We're on the road again. On the road again. um Tomorrow night. um We are back in Champions League action of and we will be playing Marte, who I'm not going to lie, I'm a little bit nervous about.
00:16:01
MG
Yeah, very much so.
00:16:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But yeah, this is going to be... think I knew when we got the draw this was going to be a bit of a test anyway. um But looking at their most recent form, I think they're sitting second in their league.
00:16:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:16:13
MG
They are, yeah.
00:16:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
And yeah, they have got some, well, I say some decent players, but they've got, well, they have got some decent players, otherwise we'd be sitting second in their league. But yeah, they've hit a bit of form and I am a bit nervous about this. Not only because it's the team that we're playing and it's Champions League, we're away and our away form is not the best. So yeah.
00:16:35
MG
Really?
00:16:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, yeah. So, um I'm aware Eddie Howe done his little um press conference this morning about um some updates.
00:16:42
MG
Yeah.
00:16:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, I think Anthony Gordon has travelled with the team. um But whether or not he will play or not, we don't know. Kieran Trippier has been confirmed to be out with, ah I think, a hamstring injury.
00:16:51
MG
It's out. Yeah.
00:16:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think that is... or Is that all the player news we had? um So...
00:16:59
MG
Yeah, pretty much the rest the stuff we already know, like Wisa, Ashby, etc.
00:17:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, probably won't see them this season. that's fantastic. um So how are you I'll start with how you're feeling and We're back in Champions League action um Straight off the back of ah of a really decent Premier League win So how are you feeling going into it?
00:17:18
MG
You know what? I'm actually feeling really confident. Not

Reflecting on Newcastle's Champions League Journey

00:17:22
MG
because i think we'll get a result, because I don't think we need to.
00:17:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh
00:17:27
MG
I think it's one of those where if you look at our next like eight games, this is the one where if you lose, you go, okay.
00:17:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay.
00:17:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:17:38
MG
Yeah, because let's be honest, we're not expecting to finish top eight in the Champions League finishing off with PSG away is probably going to confirm that.
00:17:45
MG
ah Two winnable games between now and then, but it is going to be difficult. And then you look at this game and you go, we're on nine points. All we need to confirm the playoff is 11, really 12. twelve If you're unlucky, um,
00:17:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:17:59
MG
so you're looking at thinking, Marseille, really difficult team, but we've had a great start so far.
00:18:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:18:04
MG
They're one of the teams that you'd expect to be up there with us.
00:18:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep.
00:18:07
MG
They've got one win in four, I think it is. They lost at home last time out. The pressure's on them. It's not on us.
00:18:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:18:13
MG
We actually are in a position where I think we can not rest some players, but you don't have to risk Tino Livermento and Lewis Hall for me. And that makes me more confident for some reason because the pressure is off.
00:18:27
MG
even though on an away game, you know, you'd think, oh, well, I'd like to see an away win sometime this season that isn't against some Belgian team. I mean, no disrespect to Union St.
00:18:38
MG
Gilmore, but they are what most Champions League teams would call the farmers of the competition, unfortunately.
00:18:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
the farm isn't yet.
00:18:46
MG
and Yeah, and that's that's no disrespect to them. They ah just haven't got that history behind them. It's amazing that they're even there. Yeah.
00:18:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:18:53
MG
But Marseille, I mean, i'm as far as I'm concerned, I'm happy to come out with one point and the fans get out of the stadium with their skin because we've seen the the notices, people saying, oh, don't wear your Newcastle kits.
00:19:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:19:08
MG
And I've seen the pictures this morning. um we made two works for the club hes He's gone there. He was at the airport this morning and he was like, the amount of Newcastle fans is actually quite in their kits.
00:19:20
MG
Going to Marseille is actually quite scary. um And you're ex you're expecting trouble, unfortunately, in Marseille.
00:19:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Very. Yeah.
00:19:28
MG
But if we can come out with a decent performance, um win, lose or draw, and the fans come out unscathed, I'll be a happy man. Because i just I'd rather everyone made it back than we come back with a point or something.
00:19:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not.
00:19:44
MG
100%.
00:19:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:45
MG
hundred percent
00:19:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Yeah, I agree. and I am nervous about it. That's just because i think Champions League is just such a big boys tournament. so I always think like we are dealing with the big boys he's now.
00:19:55
MG
Yeah.
00:19:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
So like, obviously you want to win and you want to get the points. But I do agree. I think we've had such a confident start to our Champions League campaign where if we if we do drop points on this one, it's not, hopefully, it's not the end of the world.
00:20:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But yeah, I do agree. I would quite like... um point I'll be very happy with um and then ah win obviously I'll be ecstatic with um a loss I wouldn't be too um annoyed with and no um but obviously you still do want to see them do really well so I would yeah so it's one of them ones it's a difficult one I'm in a bit of a hard place with it um but yeah like you say I think we're going into this game as the underdogs and I think Newcastle in the Champions League in general is the underdog because we're not expected to really do well in it um
00:20:25
MG
not gonna cry about it. Yeah.
00:20:39
MG
hundred percent.
00:20:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
yes, we've got the squad and we've got decent players, but really, when you look at the Champions League squads that we're competing with and the the you know the big, big teams, they've got like two squads to compete in the Champions League, you know whereas we're still like really struggling with that um squad rotation and things like that.
00:20:45
MG
No.
00:21:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we're not expected to do massively

Game Management and Player Rotation

00:21:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
well. um But I think the fact that we're coming off the back of a really good weekend, I mean, that result against Manchester City ah is is a is a a really good one um we've obviously had two weeks international break um rest so our players are rested hopefully um we've had a really great start to our Champions League campaign anyway um so I think the boys will be going into it confident I think the fans that are out there will be going in quite confident like you say I hope it's I hope it's tame I hope it everyone stays safe I think the atmosphere particularly from the Marseille lot will be
00:21:37
MG
Yeah.
00:21:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
electric I think it will be electric but I think our lot will give it yeah I think our lot will give it just as well um so yeah I think it'll be a great game um and I hope I hope we do go there and get the win um while we're just talking about that game do you think he will make and by he I mean Eddie Howe will make many changes from the squad that started on Saturday to the squad that starts um on Tuesday night because for me I feel like
00:21:43
MG
Scary as fuck.
00:21:51
MG
Yeah.
00:22:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know Anthony Gordon has travelled with the team, um but i still feel like Barnes, after Saturday's performance, probably starts over him.
00:22:17
MG
Yeah, for me, i think this is the game where 90% of managers would rest the rest players because you're in a good position.
00:22:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:22:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:22:26
MG
The game at the weekend for me is more important. um And that ah feels weird saying that a win against Everton would be more important than a win against Marseille.
00:22:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
no
00:22:35
MG
But I think this is the game where you're looking at it and going, we can't lose, we can't afford to rest players. And for me, Harvey Barnes, I completely agree with your point, is ahead of Anthony Gordon in the pecking order now, which means my front three for Marseille, Volta Marta has to start, obviously, because we've got no one else to go there.
00:22:55
MG
But I'm playing Anthony Alanga and Anthony Gordon, either side of them. And that to many people that will look like our strongest 11, but against Everton, I'd start Murphy and Harvey Barnes.
00:23:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Done.
00:23:09
MG
So we've got that rotation that we can use. I would love it if Eddie Howe did do that because it shows, you know, he's paying a lot of attention to the away form and that he's acknowledging the Premier League is important as important, maybe more important because let's be honest, if you, it's all well and good making the last 16 of the Champions League,
00:23:29
MG
But if you finish seventh again, it's all for nothing really. um So yeah, but i think, i' I hope he does make changes.
00:23:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:38
MG
I'd love to see, him I say I'd love to see Miley get a game. I'd love to see, yeah Miley probably because i don't think you'll play Ramsey because then Ramsey's a bit more injury prone.
00:23:49
MG
he's more likely to take one of those tackles from Hoiberg and knock it up. um I'd start Joe Linton. I'd start Bruno. I'd rest Tenali for probably Lewis Miley, play Miley in the deeper role.
00:24:03
MG
um And I'd actually even maybe try out five at the back because if tinoir Tino... car is ah I don't want Tino to play.
00:24:14
MG
Trippier can't play because he's out injured.
00:24:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's injured
00:24:18
MG
You may maybe look at a Jacob Murphy on the as a right wing back, three centre backs, and I guess it would kind of have to be Lewis Hall on the left in that case.
00:24:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
yet.
00:24:27
MG
But it's it's one of those where there's a lot of things you can do.
00:24:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:31
MG
I just i don't want to see Tino and Lewis Hall getting into this kind of game where it's going to be really physical. There's going to be a lot of tackles going in. Let's be honest, we're now by who they've got on the right-hand side that they're a pretty dirty and disgusting team.
00:24:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
it
00:24:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:24:46
MG
um i don't want I don't want our players being accustomed to that, but unfortunately they're going to have to.
00:24:52
MG
So let's try and keep the injury-prone ones out of the squad while we can.
00:24:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Out the squad. Yeah.
00:24:57
MG
So long and short, I hope he makes changes.
00:25:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think this will be a game where he does make changes and experiment,

Score Predictions and Podcast Wrap-up

00:25:05
MG
got to. Yeah.
00:25:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
if you like.
00:25:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think he knows he has to as well.
00:25:06
MG
Yeah.
00:25:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I know people are going to be sitting at home thinking, well, how can you say the Premier League is more important than Champions League? what I agree with that by the way because we're currently sitting 15th in the Premier League i know we've just sat there and said or wherever we are sorry I know we've just sat there and said oh it's really tight 14th sorry I know we said it's really tight it's still very important that we still gain our points in the Premier League and us sitting 14th in the Premier League's abysmal Jesus like we need to be in top 10 obviously um and I do think I do agree with you I do think um
00:25:21
MG
14th now.
00:25:33
MG
Yes. We're good.
00:25:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
He probably will be prioritising the Premier League ever so slightly more than the Champions League. But still equally a very important game.
00:25:46
MG
Great.
00:25:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
um You know, the boys are going to want to do as best as they can. I want them to do as best as they can in this tournament. So, yeah, it'll be interesting to see what he does um with the line-up, um whether or not he brings Ramsdale in for Nick Pope.
00:26:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, he likes to just constantly rotate them a little bit. um whether Sven Bottman comes in for um Shah you just don't know what he's going to do um like you say these injury prone players um he's probably not going to have them we've got a lot of them yeah this was this time last season where we start uh sorry the season before when we're in the Champions where we started to see players drop off with injuries because things were getting you know um physical and very demanding so yeah I think we'll probably will see a few changes um I'm interested to see what he does.
00:26:12
MG
We've got plenty of them. Keep them away. Yeah.
00:26:22
MG
Yeah.
00:26:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And then we'll soon find out in about 24 hours what he does.
00:26:34
MG
Yeah, absolutely.
00:26:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:26:36
MG
I think, to be fair, just before we go on to that, the the the thing that's really struck me is that we're down as favourites for the game, apparently. i think any I think any Newcastle fan is probably sitting there going, I'd be happy to come away with a draw.
00:26:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
really?
00:26:50
MG
And the best, we've played Marseille twice, Drogba annihilated us in the UEFA Cup back in 04.
00:26:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:26:56
MG
We drew 0-0 up here. We haven't scored against them in history, I don't believe, actually. But the bookies have us down as favourites for some reason. The next likelihood is a Marseille win.
00:27:08
MG
um so But it's one of those. There is a bit of distance between the two, and I'm i'm looking at I'm going, are they aware this Marseille team were 4-0 up away to Nice within like 20-odd minutes at the weekend?
00:27:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
20, yeah.
00:27:21
MG
They were incredible. And I know they've got Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang up front. It might have been um after 60 minutes, to be fair. i don't think it was actually that good as 30 minutes.
00:27:31
MG
And I know their team is mainly Premier League rejects, but they are pulled together quite a decent side. It is going to be a really difficult game. And I'm looking at that and I'm thinking, are a lot of people underestimating Marseille or am I just really overestimating them?
00:27:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:27:49
MG
Because I think they rested quite a few players at the weekend in that win as well. So we've just come off City.
00:27:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think, I think as, yeah, yeah, I think, but we won against City and we really really um i mean I I predicted us to get beat by Manchester City so and I'm I'm Newcastle fan so I'm just like what on earth happened so I think as i think what is good to know is like as Newcastle fans we always expect the worst because that's just what we drilled into for like however many years of being Newcastle fans and go into places like Marseille like it is going to be a test but you know we've I mean and okay yeah We always talk about it, but we beat we've beat teams like PSG in the Champions League before, albeit it's been at home.
00:28:22
MG
Yeah.
00:28:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we there's no reason why we can't go away and beat teams like Marseille. Why not? Why not? we could We could do it. We've got the squad. We've got the players. So maybe we are underestimating ourselves. So maybe we need to be more positive.
00:28:45
MG
I do always do it, to be fair.
00:28:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Me too. i could I'm always like, if i if I predict it, then I can't be disappointed.
00:28:51
MG
Yeah, exactly.
00:28:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
and So yeah, exactly.
00:28:52
MG
Best of both worlds. I'm either wrong, but we win, or I'm right, and we lose.
00:28:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, exactly.
00:28:57
MG
So either way, um I'm right. ah
00:29:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, exactly. So obviously I hope we go and get the three points, and but I will be very happy coming away with um a point as well.
00:29:04
MG
Yeah, absolutely.
00:29:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
So either way, um before we sign off, let's just do some score predictions um for the game.
00:29:08
MG
Absolutely.
00:29:12
MG
Oh,
00:29:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Yeah, I mean, ah ah better not go against a loss again because i my uncle would text to me.
00:29:15
MG
<unk>
00:29:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
um You go first.
00:29:20
MG
Yes, but you predicted a loss against Man City. We won. You've got to do it again. um
00:29:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
tra
00:29:26
MG
I am, on the other hand, I'm going to go for 2-2 draw. i don't think we'll make as many... Thinking about it now, I don't think we'll make as many changes as I want us to.
00:29:38
MG
But I know that Marseille will probably try and come at us with a... It's a three at the back, but it's also a five at the back. They'll press quite high, but we're quite good against the press.
00:29:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep.
00:29:49
MG
And I think we'll get a couple of goals and through sloppy mistakes.
00:29:53
MG
ah You look at they've got Hojbjerg in there, ah Matt O'Reilly, who was at Brighton, Aubameyang. half their back line is players that were at West Ham when they were terrible so they're not going to be great um we can cause those mistakes particularly with the press um so I am going to go 2-2 I'm going to be positive and I think we'll come away with a very very good point
00:30:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's right.
00:30:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, um right, that was going to be score prediction. So I will go with something different, just two.
00:30:23
MG
it's 2-2 then happy days
00:30:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just two, two. Right, you go with the two, two draw.
00:30:26
MG
ah
00:30:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm going to go that will nick it, two, one.
00:30:31
MG
Oh, beautiful. well So we're scoring two, guaranteed.
00:30:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. We're scoring two. Yeah, that's what I'll go with. Ian's probably going to go for a three, one. So we'll keep it out of that. um And that, I mean, we've managed to get 30 minutes recording done.
00:30:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I'm pretty pleased with that as well. um
00:30:48
MG
ah yeah We said it'd be 15 minutes at the start.
00:30:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Perfect.
00:30:50
MG
No, no, they've got a lot more to talk about than we think because it's an exciting ah but a bit nervy time to be a Newcastle fan, isn't it?
00:30:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
know.
00:30:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
It is, yeah. And it's very busy being a Newcastle fan at the minute. There's so much going on all the time. um That is all we have time for anyway. So, Michael, thank you for joining me. um Everyone listening, um we will be back on um Wednesday morning, I think, with a um an immediate post-match reaction.
00:31:08
MG
been pleasure.
00:31:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
If not, it' will be Thursday with, I presume, a review.
00:31:15
MG
Yep.
00:31:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And until then, um I hope everyone enjoys the game and um we'll speak to you soon.
