Podcast Introduction and Guest Update

00:00:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Newcastle podcast. Proud to be part of the Global Sports Podcast Network. My name is Michael Grimeslaw and I was due to be joined by a guest ah this evening, ah but unfortunately they've been unable

Preview of Wolves Game and Key Players

00:00:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
to make it. We were going to get the perspective from the Wolves camp ahead of the game this weekend, but I guess being bottom of the league and the worst team in the league at the moment can probably put you off talking about football.
00:00:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Instead, ah we're going to go through and I'm going to do a little bit of a preview. I'll mention sort of your, do speak about Johan Wiss and Nick Valtemar, whether they can replace the goals from Alexander Rezac.
00:00:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Speak a little bit on what I see for the future of ah William Ossola. And then we'll go into our thoughts on what the next seven games might hold for Newcastle United.
00:01:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah For those that are wondering, seven, that's a bit of a weird number. We have exactly seven games until the international break starts again.

Newcastle's Season Start Analysis

00:01:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Tomorrow, ah you'll be able to get a match preview from the rest of the team. Kevin Ian will be on that. and But I want to talk about our start the season so far.
00:01:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Two draws, one defeat, two decent performances, one who performance. But with that in mind, I don't know about anyone else, but I've been extremely content with how we've started the season so far.
00:01:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Against Aston Villa, we were sitting there at the end of the game thinking, if only we had a striker that could put the ball in the back of the net or even, you know, a winger that's capable of doing it up front. It was a little unfortunate.
00:02:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
We should have put Aston Villa to bed, but a draw at Villa Park at the end of the season will look like a very good point. At the moment, it doesn't. um But when Aston Villa start to kick into gear, it will look like a very good point. So very happy with that, although wasn't at the time.

Match Reviews: Aston Villa, Liverpool, Leeds

00:02:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then we have the Liverpool game.
00:02:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Obviously, It was bit of a kick in the private parts, wasn't it? But were very, very proud of the performance um because to go 10 men, two nil down, to bring it back against any opposition is brilliant. But to do it against the Premier League champions, it was an absolutely fantastic performance for the lads. And then the worrying part was Leeds for me. um After the Leeds game, you are sitting there thinking, we're in trouble because the man of the match in this game was Sean Longstaff.
00:02:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
And when you consider the names that we had on the pitch, it really shouldn't have been Sean Longstaff. um But yeah, Leeds was a little bit of a worry, but then we've had a ah pretty hectic deadline day in between them, where Alexander Rezac has gone, Wisser and Nick Votermade are in.
00:03:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know about anyone else. In fact, I'll ask this question to our listeners. Are you confident that those two players can cover the goals lost by the Swedish international They can certainly cover the goals lost by Callum Wilson.
00:03:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's already scored more for West Ham this season than he did for Newcastle last season.

New Signings: Wisser and Vultimao

00:03:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the same amount as William Osula has for Newcastle. So as long as Vultimao gets one between now and the end of the season. He's matched the total of those two.
00:03:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But I think overall, looking at it, the worst signings of Wissar and Vultimard will be absolutely fantastic because, i mean, it's just very exciting when you think about it You watch Johan Wissar and his instincts are undeniable.
00:03:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
As a striker, you can score 10, 15 goals a season by just being in the right position for a tap-in. And as for Nick Vultimard, well... He does look raw, it has to be said.
00:04:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
um He was excellent at the under-21s tournament in the summer, but he was 22-23, so he does have a few years on some of the players there. I'm fully aware that some of the other players there would have been 23 as well.
00:04:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But I think the the bit that stands out for me um was Stuttgart won the DFB Pokal last year, Vultimao was the top goal scorer in the competition and it wasn't the case of, ah well, he probably scored five four of the five goals against yeah know Division III opposition.
00:04:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
oh he scored and He scored in five different matches. It was one goal in five different matches. So from what I've seen, looks like he's one of those players that has more of an impact on the game. than he does putting the ball in the back of the net.
00:04:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And to be honest, from what I've seen, i think he does look decent. I think the issue for Newcastle is we've got to try and hope that translates to the Premier League.

Vultimao's Potential Impact

00:05:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
But the thing with Vultima that was the the shining light of the international break for me was how much you can do in creating space for other players.
00:05:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Against Northern Ireland, we saw it. We didn't really see it too much against um Slovakia or Slovenia. I can't remember which one it was off the top of my head.
00:05:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
um i always get those two mixed up for some reason, and I sound really stupid because of it. um But yeah, it's it's one of those where we didn't see too much in the first game, but the second game,
00:05:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's creating quite a lot of space. And with Northern Ireland being a team that you know do tend to sit back, he was able to create the space for other players to work their magic. Now, unfortunately, the magic was kind of...
00:05:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
first getting to Hogwarts than Harry Potter final year Expelliarmus, but it was it was decent in the end, although they did look a little bit better

Team Dynamics and Strategy

00:06:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
when he came off. so But I don't think we can judge them based on those fixtures for Germany.
00:06:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think the exciting thing for me is that Wisser and Voldemort can play together. We've said at Newcastle, one of the worst things for us at the moment is we don't have a number 10.
00:06:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Volta Mard can play in that number 10 or as a striker. Now, how many times have we gone into games and gone, we don't really have anyone to come on for Alexander Azak. It's just Callum Wilson, who will run around for five minutes and then probably end up doing his shoulder or William Asula, who, how do I call him?
00:06:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, Callum Wilson, I called him. I thought i called him William Wilson there. For some reason, that would have been mental. um But yeah, ah William Ossola, who sort of runs around a bit like a headless chicken.
00:06:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And that enthusiasm is absolutely fantastic at times. But there are also moments where you're like, you've just gave away a few too many pointless fouls here ah for my liking.
00:07:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
But overall, I am very confident that Wissar and Vultimaar can play together. Vultemar within a slightly deeper role. Wisser getting in behind.
00:07:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
And because of the movement that Vultemar can actually yeah know utilize for a 6'6 player, he can create spaces, come deep. He can pretty much do anything.
00:07:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I think I was reading a stat the other day where I think he was one of the only players um in the top five leagues who had more than two shots, two key passes, two successful dribbles, and a few other stats per game.
00:07:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's one of those where you're thinking, a well-rounded player at 6'6". We haven't seen anything like this since Peter Crouch. um So who knows? I don't think it'll be as easy on the eye of, oh, big man, little man is crouching to foe.
00:08:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I do think Volta Mard and Vissa, when they do end up playing together, when maybe we're drawing a game or behind in a game, it could be absolutely beautiful stuff to view. um

Podcast Advertisements and Commentary

00:08:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
But for now, um I'm going to go into our first advert of the episode.
00:08:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Then I'll speak a little bit more about a creative midfielder, or maybe how our midfield looks and maybe the future of William Ossola. And then go into sort of how we can look at our next seven games.
00:08:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
But for now, it's Bayernique.
00:09:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Brilliant stuff. Now, I don't know what other people think, but I think it sounds so much better with the music. The annoying thing is is that it's um it's been created by our friends at GSPN. And I say friends loosely because of which club it is. At Liverpool, um Louis Easton and the team ah created sort of these two adverts, and they do sound

Midfield Weakness Discussion

00:09:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
wonderful.
00:09:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
a lot better than just standard reading them so credit to them um but yeah let us know what you think if you do just prefer us reading them maybe or um the actual just advert without any music just let us know and we'll cater to that in the future um for now i do want to talk about the situation in midfield um one of the things i've seen online um not continuously but um quite consistently is that a lack of a number 10 and I know I've just mentioned Nick Vultemard as that potential number 10 and a lack of a creative midfielder is something that we've really struggled with now
00:10:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Or that we should have brought

Player Capabilities and Future Tactics

00:10:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
in. Now, I admit against the low block, I do agree. I think we saw against Leeds that that is a real problem. But against Leeds, I think if we had proper striker up front...
00:10:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
And this isn't a slant on Osula. I do think there's a raw talent in there. But it just the one thing he's lacking is those striker's instincts that if you watch any compilation, because you can't watch a full 90 minutes of him online, ah if you watch any compilation of Johan Wisser, you'll notice there's so many tap-ins where...
00:10:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
even if the ball is deflected into a certain area, he's made the move to that area. Now, of course, on a compilation, you're not going to see all the times where he's made the move into the wrong area.
00:11:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But I do think it's one of those where we're going to see really striker's instincts, the difference between the two. um And I'm aware we had Alexander Izak, who has those instincts as well.
00:11:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But... I think we've got a happy medium between Osula and Izak. And although Wissar isn't going to be winning any you know potentially any Ballon d'Ors anytime soon, I do think he's a striker that can get 15, 20 goals for Newcastle based off those instincts.
00:11:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
But the the number 10 role, creating those... um those efforts forward, that I don't actually think is needed against the low blockers, against leads.
00:11:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think we put in enough half-decent crosses where a number so a number nine, a proper number nine, would be on the end of them. ah The one that comes into mind ah was when Jacob Ramsey crossed the ball in and Osula had to take a touch rather than hitting it first time.
00:12:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
and it ended up getting blocked if that goes in the back of the net we're sitting there going oh the composure to take a touch is absolutely fantastic um but realistically we know he should have hit it first time and i think a proper striker does um but there were also few other moments uh with crosses um where either voltamar or wisser would have been able to get on the end of it a lot better and then i also think when you look at it with Jacob Ramsey instead of Joe Linton at times against lesser opposition.
00:12:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I think the creativity of Ramsey, Bruno and Tonali should be enough to unlock the door there at times. They'll still create a lot of chances. And Gordon and Alanga, we haven't seen those two on the wings for Newcastle yet.

Upcoming Fixtures and Tactical Importance

00:12:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I am so excited to see that. I know we're not going to um here i think is it arsenal or bournemouth i think it's arsenal that'll be the first time we actually get to see it it might be bournemouth uh depending on where the bradford game lies i can't remember off the top of my head i think we play bradford yeah so we've had leeds that's the first game he's been suspended wolves will be the second and bournemouth will be the third the first time we'll see it might actually be barcelona at home which would be a treat. It'd be an absolutely fantastic way to kick off things against Barcelona.
00:13:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And then, yeah, so they'll be back for Bradford. I don't think they'll play, let's be honest. And then the first Premier League game we'll see Gordon back is Arsenal at home, where obviously he does like playing Arsenal.
00:13:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's got quite a few goals against them. So maybe, just maybe, we'll see best of Anthony Gordon and he can end that goalless run then. um But yeah, our wingers, I think they'll do more than enough with Gordon and Alanga alongside each other, get up and run alongside the new strikers, and we'll see a more direct clinical look at Newcastle United attack.
00:14:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And then the the last thing for me on the squad at the moment, um William Osula. I want to know what our listeners think.
00:14:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah What is next for him at Newcastle United? Because obviously there was the loan move to either Frankfurt or Aston Villa on deadline day by Leverkusen were apparently interested as well.
00:14:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Those three teams on loan, I think it would have been a perfect move for them. And personally, I think we were not foolish for not sending them out because I can see why we haven't done it.
00:14:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I do think for his development, it is what's needed. He's third choice striker now. So even if Newcastle do play two games every week, it's unlikely he gets more than a thousand minutes in all competitions for me because...
00:14:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
you're probably going to be playing Nick Vultomar against ah Bradford. Let's be honest. If he hasn't scored in the first three games, you're playing him against branford to try not branford Bradford to try and get that confidence up.
00:15:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And even then, you need to start games. So if Wissett does start Wolves, Barcelona and Bournemouth, you've really got no choice but to start the 69 million pound man against the likes of Bradford um and try and get that confidence up. But yeah, it's...
00:15:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's a difficult one because I genuinely think he could be a really strong right winger in two, three years' time. I think he'll end up being the player that replaces Jacob Murphy when Jacob Murphy does go on to leave the club, um which will be a horrible time because Murphs is a fantastic player in his own right.
00:15:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
But he is, again, getting a little old for Premier League football. And unless you're a freak of nature like Cristiano Ronaldo, then you're not going to last beyond 32, 33.

Ian McKay Joins with Humor and Structure Discussion

00:15:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
thirty two thirty three So with that, that's what I think. I think it'll be one of those where Murphy ends up going in two, three years, but realistically...
00:16:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
uh william osula has all the megan's to do that and where we've got a brilliant brilliant last bit of treat as we go into part three uh as i go into the zencaster advert where i have been joined by my good friend ian mckay how's it going ian
00:16:26
Iain
Michael, Michael, Michael, I wish I could tell you I it was drinking and I was falling asleep for that reason, or I was doing something exciting, something illegal, but I haven't.
00:16:37
Iain
i'm doing I'm sitting waiting for 7.30 to tick around, getting so bored watching... well I was watching the Two-Tone documentary, actually, but I fell asleep in it. And that I've only just woken up.
00:16:49
Iain
I was hoping you hanging on for me. I guess I missed the first part. Never mind.
00:16:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:16:53
Iain
Play the advert.
00:16:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:16:54
Iain
We'll do a part we'll do an extended part three.
00:16:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, well, as I mentioned, the adverts today are brought us by the team at Liverpool and Louis Easton.
00:17:04
Iain

00:17:09
Iain
This is the first

00:17:37
Iain
it's better It's better that we're not talking it. That does sound different, doesn't it? And Louis got quite a nice voice.
00:17:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
He does indeed, yeah.
00:17:42
Iain
i want to get i don't I don't mean in a gay way, I just mean it's quite a pleasant voice. Yes.
00:17:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's it's a voice for radio, isn't it Or maybe a podcast.
00:17:52
Iain
And voice for a podcast indeed. Yes, mind you, i'm but I'm looking forward to seeing how I join this podcast when we look look at it back, Michael. I think that's going to be the most my most dramatic entry for a long time.
00:18:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, it very much will be. I'll admit, I was talking about William Osula and I saw i saw um a guest enter the room and i was like, oh, he's come at the perfect time.
00:18:11
Iain
Wow.
00:18:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I was like, do I go to Zencastr now ah do i and just have you pop up right at the start of the third part? Or do we go into it in the second part? But yeah, thank you very much for joining me, Matt.
00:18:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
It is much appreciated.
00:18:28
Iain
see
00:18:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'll be honest. I called out the guy from Wolves for not turning up at the start. I hadn't mentioned you at all. So... The viewers would have been a little bit confused just seeing you pop up, but excellent stuff.
00:18:36
Iain
well
00:18:40
Iain
It's a bonus, isn't it? We should have done 7 o'clock, not 7.30. I was awake then. I am sorry, Michael. I am. Honestly. That's because I work so hard. I know people won't believe that, but honestly, it is. Thank
00:18:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah I believe you, mate, and that is all that matters. So in the third part, i was goingnna we're going to look ahead to the next chapter of Newcastle's season.

Seven-Game Outlook

00:19:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Eventually going to do an in-depth preview of every game. is you know We've got the Wolves one tomorrow. And i want to gauge expectations of what we can come to expect from that upcoming period. Seven games in that time.
00:19:12
Iain
Okay. Okay. Sounds
00:19:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
So wanted to get your thoughts on results for the seven games with Engage Expectations.
00:19:17
Iain
good.
00:19:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'll let you speak through them ah because they've heard my voice for the best part of 20 minutes now.
00:19:23
Iain
yeah
00:19:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah
00:19:26
Iain
okay
00:19:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
so But i will say a game and then want you to say whether we'll win, lose a draw. I'll give mine and then we'll give the reasons afterwards. How's that sound?
00:19:36
Iain
okay
00:19:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Okay.
00:19:37
Iain
sounds good
00:19:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
So to start off, Wolves at Home.
00:19:43
Iain
Comfortable home win.
00:19:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Barcelona at home.
00:19:46
Iain
I'm hoping but that is going to be such a fantastic night. It's so sad that I'm one of the 120,000 people who queued up for a ticket and didn't get one.
00:19:56
Iain
But to be fair, ah you know, I had to watch PSG at home and I really enjoyed that last time as well.
00:20:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:20:03
Iain
Do you know what? I am going to hope we catch Barcelona cold at the start of their Champions League campaign because they do sometimes give something up in those first few games.
00:20:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Started slow last year. Yep.
00:20:12
Iain
So, yeah, I think it's another PSG night. Maybe another 3-2 with a hat-trick.
00:20:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ooh.
00:20:17
Iain
Who

Ticket Purchasing Frustrations

00:20:18
Iain
knows? I think we'll win. think we'll beat Barcelona.
00:20:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wow. Big statement. To be fair, just before we go on to the next one, did you see where I was in the queue for the Barcelona tickets? don't know.
00:20:31
Iain
Yeah, well, you miles ahead of where Joanne was, and she got the tickets, but I think you were being too choosy for your tickets, and ended up missing out altogether, didn't you?
00:20:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, so it wasn't the fact it was being choosy. I just, I had four sets of tickets in, because I said to my wife, we'll go together. So I picked two and then was just like, right, I'll put them in the basket.
00:20:47
Iain
of the state of the COPD. Next, it's great transition.
00:20:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'll go to pay.
00:20:51
Iain
So, we'll talk to
00:20:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
And four times it came back saying these seats are no longer available. And then when I got back in the fifth time, I was like, right, I'm just going to buy one and tell her I couldn't get them.
00:20:57
Iain
where he says that, unless we have a certain number of students, we'll be able to see the same transition in the same way a student, and the same transition for his agency.
00:21:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah just I'll say I'm going out with lads or something. um But then every single time it just kept coming off.
00:21:07
Iain
But, they may be able to answer one question and be seen in the same form, and the same thing that we've seen from today is also very clear transition in the main part of this presentation, even that we can talk about.
00:21:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then I don't know if it's because I refreshed too many times, but it was saying there was no seats in level seven, but there was pitch side. i was like, I can see this is glitching here. um So I had a right horror a show. But yeah, hopefully it's another PSG night. And hopefully the lads fare better for Barcelona than I did.
00:21:29
Iain
Did I just say, i mean, I i have hunted for tickets being returned ever since.

Game Predictions and Positive Outlook

00:21:35
Iain
And the the story's broken today about the yeah about the ah tickets that were sent off to the school in Dundee being being brought back and going back on sale.
00:21:46
Iain
Well, from nowhere, there's 18 of the um
00:21:53
Iain
corporate tickets, the entertainment, what are called the hospitality tickets. that £1,069 are available again.
00:22:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wow.
00:22:02
Iain
So how on earth could they have been the tickets that went to the school? but They said they they put them back on sale.
00:22:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, that's a bit insane.
00:22:08
Iain
It's ridiculous. But yeah, anyway, they're back and back and gone very quickly.
00:22:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
it does To be honest, it does make sense that um it's hospitality that was selling the tickets. ah Because, to be honest, I can't think of it as a Newcastle season season ticket holder, which I'm not, obviously.
00:22:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
and But if I was, I wouldn't be selling that for any game.
00:22:29
Iain
I know, I
00:22:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
like even if And I know people can say, well, you weren't a season ticket holder when Steve Bruce was here.
00:22:34
Iain
would too.
00:22:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, it did used to be. Not anymore. um and know We are now the reasons why people weren't. But it's one of those where... like If I was a season ticket holder now, I'd i'd be keeping on It's like gold.
00:22:48
Iain
but
00:22:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's only going to get more and more valuable.
00:22:49
Iain
i would too
00:22:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, ah game number three so far. We've got two wins. the winner A win against Wolves at home and Barcelona at home. Bournemouth away. How do you think will fare there?
00:23:04
Iain
Yeah, the bogey team for us, Bournemouth, aren't they? They hammered us at home last year. and And to be fair, they hammered us and should have beaten us at their place, but they had a very good goal in the last minute, disallowed for but no good reason.
00:23:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Dodgy handball.
00:23:17
Iain
I'd be very pleased if um if we get a draw,
00:23:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, agreed. And then we've got Bradford at home. Should be a win, yeah?
00:23:28
Iain
I've got a ticket. I'm going to be there. Yeah, I'm hoping it'll be a ticket. I'm imagining that we'll see the second string But even then, I think 52,000 in the second string should be too much for Bradford at home.
00:23:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Potentially, yeah.
00:23:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
To be honest, I was going to say, well, I did say um earlier in the pod, I think it'll be ah game where Nick Vultomar starts. So we might ah be one of those where you see the first real performance from him because I think he'll start on the bench.
00:23:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
and But if he if he doesn't come on and do anything in the first three games, that Bradford game's got the potential to be a massive confidence booster, doesn't it?
00:24:06
Iain
Fingers crossed. Fingers crossed. Might be the first game that Joe Linton comes back for as well.
00:24:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Potentially, yeah.
00:24:11
Iain
i'm not sure he'll I'm not sure he'll get risked against Wolves. And and if we do well against Wolves, Eddie's not one for mixing it up, is he? So maybe maybe we'll get Joe Linton back.
00:24:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, depends on Jacob Ramsey as well.
00:24:22
Iain
Yeah, absolutely.
00:24:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then after Bradford at home, we have the Gunners Arsenal at St. James' Park. How you think that's going to go?
00:24:32
Iain
but but Do we not beat them all of the time these days?
00:24:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah they They got one overall in in May, but other than that, yeah.
00:24:36
Iain
there error
00:24:40
Iain
i think there is they're a stronger team this year than they were last year, but then so

Team Tactics and Player Roles

00:24:44
Iain
are we. So, what? what ah Well, no, I'm going to go to beat Arsenal again. We've beaten them the last two years, and we deserve to.
00:24:52
Iain
And that's before the two wins in the League Cup as well, and we're at home.
00:24:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:56
Iain
So I think we'll beat them 1-0. warnell
00:24:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
One nil is a great shout. That's what it's been the last two years, isn't it? Isaac got it last year. Was it Gordon the year before? The girl they all cried about for over 200 days consecutively.
00:25:08
Iain
the The winner last year was ah was a thing of beauty. a cross on the run from Gordon, headed in by Isaac. Fabulous goal.
00:25:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll see the same from Wissau-Voltemar this year, no doubt about it.
00:25:20
Iain
Absolutely.
00:25:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
But our next game, potentially a big game if we lose to Barcelona, Union Saint-Groën away.
00:25:30
Iain
Yeah, well, I know we're going to do an in-depth um prediction for all of the Champions League games soon, which I'm looking forward to. And
00:25:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:25:38
Iain
This is a fellow pot four team and it's the team, it's the game away from the the away game. I think that we'll pick three points up in our Champions League campaign. think we'll beat them.
00:25:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Good stuff. and They've got a very small...
00:25:52
Iain
They sound like a happy clap, I don't know.
00:25:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah You do, you do. But to be honest, if we pick up that even near this amount of points, I'll be a very happy man. And I will say, if anyone isn't familiar with Junion Saint-Germain, just look them up, their progress over the last 10 years.
00:26:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah The stadium's quite funny as well, being a small little ah small little stadium.
00:26:09
Iain
Thank you.
00:26:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's going to be one of those that getting the magpies in there is going to be a big problem. I did see ah the tickets got released to season ticket holders today, and it said there was 52,000 available um away from home. I'm thinking, so they're going, it's clearly a glitch, but could you imagine 52,000 Newcastle fans fitting in that stadium?
00:26:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
The place would explode. But...
00:26:35
Iain
it
00:26:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:26:36
Iain
I'm not sure you get 52,000 in, even if you let them all go and stand on the pitch. But there you go.
00:26:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Exactly, mate. Exactly. And then the last one is maybe the most unpredictable. Nottingham Forest at home.
00:26:53
Iain
so they Nottingham Forest at St James's or at... Nottingham Forest, yeah.
00:26:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes. That's St. James's, yeah.
00:27:01
Iain
Oh, that was, we were at that one last year as well and that was a very strange game because we didn't start well, went behind and then four goals in about 15 minutes to go in winning four, one at half time.
00:27:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:27:15
Iain
Wondering what sort cricket score we're going to end up with and nothing for us was superb in the second half and they nearly got back for a draw. We won 4-3. Gibbs White and Elliot Anderson will still be in there, won't they?
00:27:28
Iain
Yeah.
00:27:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:27:31
Iain
No, i think we I think again, though, that is it that's a narrow home win, I think.
00:27:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:27:37
Iain
Tough game, but, you know, narrow home win, 2-1.
00:27:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
I do agree. i think
00:27:40
Iain
Right.
00:27:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think again um for us against Nuno, Spirito, Santos, Nottingham Forest, it was always a barn burner of a game. Brilliant games every time. But with Ange Pustacoglu at the helm, I mean, he's already he's already said in a press conference, and I'm aware it was a joke, that he might have to win a trophy this year to stay for a second.
00:28:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was a dr joke, but I generally think he might have also meant a little bit as well, seeing Newcastle and Crystal Palace pick up trophies domestically like ah last year. ah But yeah, Big Ange at the helm at Nottingham Forest.
00:28:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
What do you make of that? Because it's been a bit of a mess over there, hasn't it?
00:28:19
Iain
I like him. I do like him. But...
00:28:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:28:23
Iain
And I know that Tottenham did get crippled, certainly in the first part of the season, with injuries last year, which set the tone for their league performance, but they were they were so wide open all of the time, weren't they, because of the way he played his super high line.

Managerial Decisions and Season Expectations

00:28:38
Iain
um leave and If they do that, if his teams do that, we'll kill them, because we've got all the pace and the long, accurate long balls over the top, super fat, yeah. but think but I don't think he can do that.
00:28:52
Iain
I think he's going to have to rein in his his philosophy, which probably worked when he was manager of Celtic, because of the
00:28:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, absolutely. not
00:29:00
Iain
He had the best players, but it exposed Tottenham time and time and time again.
00:29:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:29:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
100%. I think with Tottenham's best back four, they looked okay. But as soon as they got one injury, it all fell apart. And do you're looking at that Nottingham Forest back line and you're thinking, that's really not a very quick back line to be playing on the halfway line.
00:29:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
And let's be honest with Anthony Langer and Anthony Gordon, even Johan Wisser as well, you're just asking for balls to go over the top there. um But the the strangest thing was sort of how the Nuno Espirito Santo sacking actually came about.
00:29:32
Iain
Yeah.
00:29:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because he was saying before them the end of the transfer window that i he wasn't happy and the relationship with the owner had deteriorated. And you're looking back and thinking, did that is that what happened on the pitch?
00:29:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
And you're sitting there and thinking, compare that to Eddie Howe and our owners, where I've got no doubt there have been some prove probably quite heated arguments in the backroom at Newcastle United, because not a lot would not a lot got done um before the latter stages where German actually had to come out to Newcastle and get the job done.
00:29:59
Iain
oh
00:30:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But to so have it play out on the pitch instead of in the backroom, it's horrible for a club.
00:30:21
Iain
Well, he's a passionate guy, isn't he? And they got dismissed as being, he's a passionate guy.
00:30:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:30:25
Iain
And Nuno kind of said he's a passionate guy. And it was a bad result, wasn't it? Which meant that they suddenly haven't been top four all season. They, they were putting a run together, which was going to drop them away from top four and maybe even top five.
00:30:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah
00:30:40
Iain
I think they ended up finished, finishing seventh. Can't have been good, but obviously that's festered over the summer.
00:30:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:30:47
Iain
Um, maybe he didn't want to sell Alanga and Alanga got sold, but I think they brought some good replacements in. don't think they've weakened their team at all and they hung on to Murillo and Milenkovic, who were kingpin's defence.
00:31:02
Iain
I don't think there could have been and any argument from Nuno that he wasn't getting supported. I think it's just that that day, the cracks have set in there. This of guy is obviously...
00:31:15
Iain
difficult to get on with if you get on his wrong side and and that's been proved.
00:31:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:31:19
Iain
I think Bostokoglu is correct. I think the swap's happened because he's he's taken a look at Bostokoglu's record and thought, well, you do win trophies, mate.
00:31:31
Iain
You don't win us the Europa League. I think that's what the target is.
00:31:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:31:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'd say, I think, if anything, if I'm a Nottingham Forest fan, maybe I mean, I'm not, so maybe I'm wrong, but I think they actually would have maybe preferred to have gone into the Conference League because they've got a more chance of

Season Wrap-Up and Listener Interaction

00:31:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
winning there.
00:31:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think we were saying at the start of the, um at the end of the season, and ah we wouldn't be, we'd be really disappointed if we missed out on the Champions League. But in the end, if we made the your Conference League,
00:32:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
there's a very big chance you win it because your biggest opposition is Fiorentina.
00:32:08
Iain
Yeah, well, I think the biggest opposition in the Europa League is Villa, personally.
00:32:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, I'd probably a agree.
00:32:13
Iain
and and they haven't started particularly well. um But yeah, it's um ah but it's all very, very exciting. I don't think his team's any weaker.
00:32:25
Iain
We'll have to see if Postacoglu can dilute his all-out attacking philosophy to the extent that, that as you say, that that defence is allowed to defend.
00:32:38
Iain
It's no good.
00:32:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Nah.
00:32:39
Iain
mean, we saw just last night in the game against Serbia... Blenkovich was ah sent off in the end because fast players running at him with a ball behind him is something he's not comfortable with.
00:32:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:32:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah
00:32:51
Iain
and and In the end, he'd be made ah he made a late tackle and got sent off, didn't
00:32:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100%. If you can't handle it against Harry Kane, I'm looking forward to seeing how you do against Jorn Wisser.
00:33:01
Iain
he?
00:33:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But yeah, absolutely. I mean, we've got the the seven games there. I think we had the the the only one we didn't win in your eyes was Bournemouth away.
00:33:12
Iain
We've drawn it more than...
00:33:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're beating Barcelona.
00:33:14
Iain
Oh, God. Well, I do think, though... I do think if you were... i mean, um I don't like making excuses. I think, you know, Anthony Gordon playing centre-forward, we've heard him say in interviews a couple of times that he sees himself playing more centrally as he gets older.
00:33:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's strange for me.
00:33:34
Iain
He fancies himself... he does he would He would not agree with you if he said that he'd been played as a makeshift centre-forward.
00:33:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:33:41
Iain
That said, we didn't we didn't score against Villa. We didn't score against Leeds. Not that that was Gordon's fault. But timm but the the way we played against Villa, the way we played against Liverpool, if you take that form into these home games and you put a cutting edge on us, you know, there's they're going to be goals.
00:34:04
Iain
We're going to score.
00:34:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:34:05
Iain
We're going to score goals.
00:34:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, 100%.
00:34:06
Iain
And what we have been doing very well in these first three games is defending very well.
00:34:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:34:11
Iain
So, it might sound a bit a bit like I'm just talking my dream result. But I do think this run of games coming up gives us an opportunity to to correct our position in the league, if I can put it that. Because I think fourth bottom is a false position for us.
00:34:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'd completely agree. Yeah. It is one of those where the Villa results at the end of the season will look like a great result. Now it doesn't because obviously they haven't started well, but nil, nil at Villa park, getting a result at Villa park.
00:34:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think before they played us, I think I can't remember, um, what their last result was, but they were unbeaten in 20 odd games at Villa park.
00:34:54
Iain
i can remember I can remember that it was nine straight wins at Phillip Park in the last season.
00:34:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um,
00:35:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. And then Palace absolutely smashed them, to be fair. So that's and that has ended that, but it's going to be one of those, you know Newcastle and Palace as your first two home games.
00:35:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's not exactly easy for them either. So think the Brentford away defeats the one that will hit them, but they'll bill bounce back. Newcastle will be up there as well towards the end of the season. and um But yeah, I had something quite similar to you, to be honest.
00:35:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So I had us beating Wolves. I did ah do have us losing at at home to Barcelona.
00:35:31
Iain
Come on.
00:35:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I think we'll lead.
00:35:34
Iain
on
00:35:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
i think we'll lead. ah But I i think we'll lead up until about the 75th minute. think the atmosphere, i know war flags have probably got something planned. and it'll be an absolutely massive night, but I think we'll crumble at the end ah under that pressure.
00:35:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then Bournemouth, I've got us losing away. Again, it's... And then the next four games, I've got us winning. So I've got us beating Bradford, Arsenal, Union Central and Nottingham Forest, four back-to-back.
00:36:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Bournemouth, I think, is the game I'm most sure that we're not going to win, which is... Insane when you think you've got Barcelona, Arsenal and the Nottingham Forest who are in Europe.
00:36:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh yeah, it's Bournemouth who've lost their entire backline almost that I'm most scared of.
00:36:21
Iain
I know. You'd think losing those two... I mean, what have you got? One went to Madrid and the other went to Paris Saint-Germain.
00:36:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Paris Saint-Germain?
00:36:29
Iain
Is that right?
00:36:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah.
00:36:31
Iain
Which is a hell of an endorsement as to how good that pairing was at centre-half last year.
00:36:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
100%.
00:36:35
Iain
and
00:36:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
hunts
00:36:36
Iain
But they've started the season really well. They've had some great results already. So, you know, you'd have to think we had a better chance of scoring against them with two different centre-halves.
00:36:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:36:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah yeah
00:36:48
Iain
But yeah, you know, I'm hoping we'll Yeah, we're due to play well against them. um But ah eddie's Eddie's got a terrible record against Bournemouth, hasn't he, with him being an old boy.
00:36:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
we
00:36:58
Iain
like
00:36:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, you'd think you' some sceptics would probably think he still has them in there, in the heart, and he doesn't want to do anything against them. I'm fairly certain that's not the case, but I have seen it all over socials when we got battered off them 4-1.
00:37:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
So ah I did just think I'd mention that there, but it's stupid.
00:37:16
Iain
That was just... a that was That was just an absolutely superb example of tactical planning by, what's he called, Eriola?
00:37:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Andonio Raiola, yeah.
00:37:28
Iain
Yeah. He's a great manager. um He's a very good manager. I mean, to be fair, coming back from 2-0 down and nearly beating Liverpool was a fabulous performance. Two late goals for them to lose at Anfield.
00:37:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it was fantastic.
00:37:42
Iain
um Yeah, they're still a force. like they'll they'll be They'll be looking to match or better last year's position, I think.
00:37:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. And to be fair, with Bournemouth being our next Premier League game after Wolves, it almost makes the Wolves game a must-win because I think ah if you've only got, let's say, three points after four games, you're all of a sudden looking at next... I mean, the game after that is Arsenal at home.
00:38:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, I'm aware this, well, not this time last season, but last season we sat, well, I sat here and said, Eddie Howe has to get results against Nottingham Forest and Arsenal because the results we've had have been really poor.
00:38:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
We did beat Wolves in the li build-up to that. um But it almost kind of feels like history could repeat itself there because Bournemouth, very hard fixture. Wolves,
00:38:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
We should be beaten, but if we don't, it puts the pressure on. And I almost think we'd maybe do a little better under that pressure.
00:38:40
Iain
well
00:38:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
What do you think?
00:38:41
Iain
ah i I know that it's hard looking at two points for the first nine, but I, I look back to the performances. think we sat and watched all three games. The Leeds game was, we, we got, it was an awful weather, windy, rainy.
00:38:56
Iain
um we kind of got dragged down Leeds as level. If without, without being too disrespectful, it was a hard game a away.
00:39:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh
00:39:05
Iain
Ellen road leads. Hadn't, uh, lost there for, they haven't lost there for more than a year. So they're a good home team.
00:39:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah wow.
00:39:12
Iain
um But I think the performances in the first two games were were really encouraging. And just matching that in these coming up games, yeah, I think people will be fearing us, home or away, because with we're five or six players stronger in that first team squad than we were last year.
00:39:31
Iain
And we were bloody good last year.
00:39:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
What upstam? We were. We were. So with that, we've hit the old 40-minute mark. So I'm going to leave it on the question of two of our viewers. Wolves at home, Bournemouth away, Barcelona at home, Bradford at home, Arsenal at home, Union Central our way, and Nottingham Forest at home.
00:39:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
How many points did Newcastle pick up? Obviously, two of them in the Champions League, so split them if you can. um And then just let us know in the comments. Remember to subscribe if you haven't already.
00:40:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
And just be sure to follow the pod because we've got stuff every single day now. I know. Every day.
00:40:09
Iain
Every day.
00:40:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mental.
00:40:21
Iain
I can't.
