Introduction and Host Banter

00:00:10
Speaker
Casual Nerdity is a podcast celebrating and discussing pop culture that we love. Movies, TVs, comics, books, games, you name it. Ari missed to talk about the good, what worked, and yeah, sometimes what didn't.
00:00:21
Speaker
All with an eye towards building up, not tearing down. Thanks for joining us.
00:00:31
Speaker
Welcome back to the Casual Nerdity Podcast, everybody. I am Daryl. I'm Nick. And I'm Lauren. We could barely hear you there, Nick.
00:00:42
Speaker
Yep, nick is Nick is off in the distance. I'm right here. Nick run into a cave. um I'm literally right here. Okay, there there you are. he's back. He's back. um So... He literally had to move.

Previous Episode Recap and 'Clone Watch' Discussion

00:00:57
Speaker
Have the two of you recovered from us spending two and a half hours talking about 66 minutes of animated TV last time? Barely.
00:01:10
Speaker
little bit. Kinda. Had a bit of a rough road, but that's probably also from the allergies going on right now. Ah, yes, of course. yeah You know what I realized after we finished that episode and I was getting ready to post it and I was putting the show notes together and everything? Uh-huh.
00:01:28
Speaker
We were in such a hurry to dive in because we knew we had a ton of material and that we were going to go super long, especially for our show. We did not explain the concept of Clone Watch like we normally do at the beginning.
00:01:42
Speaker
Oh, no. Oh, no. They'll... If new people come in, they'll be confused about what's going on. <unk> i put it in the show notes last time. You think they read the show notes?
00:01:55
Speaker
Who knows? But just in case, the smart ones do. He asked me, am I supposed to read the show notes? He's like, that's where we have merch.
00:02:09
Speaker
Well, we don't have merch for this podcast. Not yet, anyway. I mean, we could have

Merchandise Ideas and Star Wars Fandom Entry

00:02:15
Speaker
merch. One of these days, we're going to have a shirt that says Bubble Boys on it, and it'll have one of the Bubble Boys.
00:02:22
Speaker
but yeah There's so many different ways I could go with designing that shirt. I'm sure we can't have exactly what you want on there, because I'm pretty sure the Droidega is trademark copyrighted.
00:02:35
Speaker
Ah, hamsters. But if we could we could make a chibi one. little cute anime one. yeah can Can you draw a chibi, Droideka?
00:02:47
Speaker
I probably could. Okay, well, if you can, then great. I know someone that could probably draw one. um But let's let's not make that mistake this time. so Clonewatch, this subseries of casual nerdity, ah exists because our gaming group is largely made of Star Wars fans who, as Betsy is fond of saying, we like Star Wars a normal amount.
00:03:20
Speaker
A perfectly normal amount. Entirely normal. And then Lauren, you came into our group and we have not allowed you to leave.
00:03:31
Speaker
No, no, I'm i'm trapped. And where did when you came into the group, where were you on this perfectly normal amount of Star Wars spectrum?
00:03:43
Speaker
I had seen the original trilogy and Rogue One and I had played one Lego game. And so you were totally on board and understood every one of those little deep cut references that we made in games, whether we were playing a Star Wars game or not.
00:04:03
Speaker
Oh, yes, of course. You know, I am, of course, omniscient. I do know all things. Yes. ah ah So... You are one with the Force, and the force is with you. Yes. Exactly. And so...

Chronological Viewing of Clone Wars

00:04:17
Speaker
Nick decided to force feed you Clone Wars. Mm-hmm. So you're watching Clone Wars for the first time. And to note, one of the reasons why it is specifically Clone Wars is because... One of the reasons why I never watched Star Wars in the first place is because it is primarily live action.
00:04:37
Speaker
And I don't tend to watch live action media that much. So having the animated series This zone. This is where live. It's your gateway drug.
00:04:48
Speaker
Yes.
00:04:51
Speaker
So... we're watching You're watching Clone Wars for the first time. I'm watching Clone Wars for probably the fourth or fifth time.
00:05:02
Speaker
And Nick is watching Clone Wars for the 8,364,921st time. Nick? It's e is that about right nick and is ah is ah is in the ballpark.
00:05:14
Speaker
It's okay. i think I think you're undershooting it a little bit, honestly. Probably. Probably. And so also because Nick is a horrible, mean, evil person, we're watching it in chronological order.
00:05:30
Speaker
Of course. Although I don't think that matters much at this point. Yeah, we're about at the point where it doesn't really matter. Mm hmm. Because they come up but It'll come up again one more time, but.
00:05:43
Speaker
That's just weird. Yeah. for For the most part, by this point, they abandoned the whole anthology jumping around the timeline concept.
00:05:54
Speaker
And they just went in a more linear story. But those that do want to watch it the correct way. Which would just be firing up Disney Plus and watching in release order.
00:06:08
Speaker
Okay, by doing it the corrector way, we do have in the and in the description the official Star Wars chronological order of the Clone Wars.
00:06:22
Speaker
Sure. Corrector. Right. Uh-huh. Uh-huh. Anyway.

Guest Contributors and Clone Wars Arc Discussion

00:06:31
Speaker
So that's that's what we're doing. we've We've been chugging right along, and occasionally we have some of our our other friends from the gaming group come in when a topic interests them.
00:06:45
Speaker
That is, and that's a polite way of saying when they threaten us with bodily harm, if we don't let them talk about certain episodes. Yes. And we, some are a lot more for both last episode.
00:06:58
Speaker
Yes. So but this one is a, this is a three episode arc, but, It's a little bit more on the casual, regular side.
00:07:09
Speaker
It's a very action-y arc. Yep. After last week's deep dive into Force weirdness, um we got to get back to a more standard Clone Wars fair with this next batch of episodes.
00:07:25
Speaker
And that batch of episodes is The Citadel, Season 3, Episode 18, Counterattack, Season 3, Episode 19, and Citadel Rescue, Season 3, Episode 20. yeah.
00:07:39
Speaker
oh yeah And, um you know, Nick's voice is kind of going, so yeah mostly goingnna be it's mostly going to be us, which means that we can just completely talk over Nick and steamroller him. and Beautiful.
00:07:58
Speaker
That's perfectly fine. It's like, I'll interject what I can. even i do have some interjections, but like, Yeah. i does and Nick, do your interjections show excitement or emotion?
00:08:14
Speaker
And did you get that reference? I do. Yeah.
00:08:20
Speaker
Um, So first up is The Citadel, Season 3, Episode 18. And the official description on Disney Plus is, A rescue team attempts to free a captive Jedi.
00:08:36
Speaker
Oh yeah, and you know that this is going to be a good three episodes, because y'all, we've got Bubble Boys in the intro! And you love the Bubble Boys. I love the Bubble Boys.
00:08:48
Speaker
And for for those just listening for the first time, then... Those are the droidekas. Yes, the droidekas. The both boys. Yes. ah so all we get we He's been a fan of them from the... We sort of watched the prequels in sort of reverse order. Mm-hmm. But he first saw them in there and it that was the first thing he, like, ecstatically said about it.
00:09:17
Speaker
Mm-hmm. Because we had a Star Wars session beforehand where we encountered the same thing and he thought those were cool. Yeah, they're there there're the goal they' are the best part of episode one.
00:09:32
Speaker
And we learn right away that Master Evan Peel has been captured and is being held in the Separatist's most formidable prison, the Citadel.
00:09:44
Speaker
Dunt, dunt. da That means that we have a prison break episode. But there will be no Wentworth Miller or ah Dominic Purcell.
00:09:56
Speaker
Mm-hmm. Which is disappointing. Um... So Peel has information about this super duper, super secret hyperspace route that connects the heart of the Republic to the heart of separatist territory.
00:10:13
Speaker
Yes, the Nexus route. Critical info. Yep, because it will ah it will allow the Republic to move forces way into separatist territory for battle.
00:10:27
Speaker
battle And they don't want the Separatists to know about it because, well, the Separatists can use it to go the other direction. But then it does ah does ah bring back into like old school legends to like the tales of the Jedi, the Great Hyperspace War, where hyperspace explorers actually discovered the the ancient kingdom of the Sith.
00:10:54
Speaker
And then had a direct route to the Galactic Republic and created the first conflict between the Jedi and the Sith. Yep. And so... ah Poetry rhymes, ah history rhymes. Again, it's like poetry, so they rhyme.
00:11:11
Speaker
Yes. Yeah.

Anakin's Leadership and Mission Strategies

00:11:13
Speaker
And so then, as Anakin and Obi-Wan are getting ready to go, they're going over the mission details with Plo Koon, and here comes Ahsoka.
00:11:25
Speaker
Master, I'm sorry I'm late. I just heard about the briefing. We're going to rescue Master Peele, right?
00:11:35
Speaker
You two have much to discuss.
00:11:39
Speaker
Ahsoka, I'm sorry I didn't tell you earlier, but you won't be coming along on this one. Not coming? But you're breaking into the Citadel. No one's ever done it. The Citadel wasn't designed to hold common criminals.
00:11:52
Speaker
It was created to hold Jedi if any of us lost our way. It's not a place for Padawans. You're just being protective again. That's not fair. How am I supposed to learn if you won't let me share the risk?
00:12:06
Speaker
This isn't a mission for learning. You either do or die. And that's not a risk I'm willing to share.
00:12:14
Speaker
So yes, Ahsoka's been left behind. Yep, and we're seeing a couple of things here. We're seeing that Anakin continues to have problems with attachment.
00:12:27
Speaker
And given that this is right after Mortis, she did die in the last story arc.
00:12:39
Speaker
I'm pretty sure we had it yeah ah our other contributor would have made some great interjections right now, but we just had to like, sort of like, no, you can't be in too many episodes.
00:12:55
Speaker
Otherwise, you're a main contributor. I mean... we, we established that we have no problem with that. Yes. But, but Betsy is very passionate about certain episodes.
00:13:07
Speaker
Yeah. More than others. And certain characters in certain episodes. and Right. But yeah. So next up, uh, we get uh, Leading battle droids. Commander R2. Specifically reprogrammed r ah battle droids.
00:13:23
Speaker
Right. He's got a group of program battle reprogrammed battle droids under his command. But I do have to wonder... Would this be D-Squad Zero? Sure.
00:13:35
Speaker
but I do have to wonder, in the scene where they're introducing this concept, there's some classic r two and 3PO banter there Why is Threepio there?
00:13:51
Speaker
He's Padme's droid at this point. Well, you see, Padme was just visiting Anakin because he, you know, is off to go on an extremely dangerous, ah you know, mission. Oh, that's why he's not wearing his cloak. It's it's in the corner, like like in the episode with Jar Jar.
00:14:09
Speaker
He's lucky that he even still has his lightsaber on him right now. Yep, because we we know that she found his lightsaber... to be heavier than she thought it was going to be. and Then she never used it!
00:14:24
Speaker
I'm never gonna let that go! is he well well I mean, i mean are we sure? Because they do end up having twins. Spoiler alert. Oh, wait, I'm sorry. do Am I gonna have to am i going to have to mark this episode as explicit?
00:14:40
Speaker
Well, you see, when the midichlorians... Midichlorians love each other very much... The Force binds and penetrates and brings the universe. Nick, you're you're not helping. You're making it worse.
00:14:59
Speaker
ah But yeah, but's that's why 3PO is there. ah Yeah, Padme is just off screen. We just didn't get to see her this episode. Okay, I'll buy that. I'll buy that. um And Ahsoka bristles at Anakin, not letting her go, and tells Plo Koon that it should be her choice when to risk her life.
00:15:21
Speaker
Pouty Ahsoka face. Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. And so then we get to ah the carbon freezing plan. Yep, Anakin's bright idea to get past the life form scanners at the Citadel.
00:15:35
Speaker
Carbon freezing. um Insert the Picard facepalm meme here. This is an extremely safe idea that can't possibly go wrong. No, there there can be nothing wrong with carbon freezing.
00:15:48
Speaker
And as long as we're talking about Anakin having ideas about carbon freezing... As we're fond of saying, foreshadowing is a literary device.
00:16:00
Speaker
Hmm. Or, here's a part of the term from our, again, our off-camera companion, Betsy. ah This is a tool that we use later. Again, it's like poetry, so if they want. That's it.
00:16:19
Speaker
Yes. we're We're bringing out all the memes. Yes. we're Yes, we are. are meme maxing with this moment. Well, you you are the... fee what what has What's the title that you've given yourself regarding memes?
00:16:35
Speaker
ah You know, i I am the meme. Yes. Yes. So, yes.

Mission Dynamics and Citadel Aesthetics

00:16:40
Speaker
And then we get to see the planet ah that this prison is on. And it's broken in half. It has like a bunch of magma on It looks really cool.
00:16:49
Speaker
I'm into this planet. That surely isn't messing up with its orbital rotation or more than any of the atmosphere on the planet. No, no, no. You see, the thing is, Daryl, the rule of cool keeps it together.
00:17:02
Speaker
i know. It's the same reason that all planets in the Star Wars universe have a single biome. Yep. And we get that dramatic scan for life forms. And the the carbon freezing plan does, in fact, work.
00:17:19
Speaker
Right? and And, oh look! Ahsoka stowed away in Carbon Freeze to come along. Who could have guessed? Yes, yes. Even with my scratchy voice, I have to say, like, I have to have to do the Betsy line.
00:17:33
Speaker
I learned from watching you, and again... she has She has this exact quote. She says, following direct orders is not always the best solution. Yeah, she she directly points out that, you know, Anakin, you're upset that I didn't follow your orders and you very frequently don't follow orders.
00:17:56
Speaker
you Like Nick just said, I learned it by watching you. Mm-hmm. and then And then they have to climb a wall. There's electro mines that force a manual climb.
00:18:08
Speaker
Right? The Citadel's defenses account for grappling hooks, and the wind's too heavy for jetpacks, so they have to do a free climb. um So is it just me? I mean, we we did all start off knowing each other in a role-playing game group, so...
00:18:28
Speaker
Does it seem like the Citadel's defenses were done were designed by an RPG game master who knows their players' tactics just a little too well? Oh, it's a classic dungeon.
00:18:41
Speaker
Yes. It's a classic dungeon and it's a classic, no, no. I know you always use jetpacks or grappling hooks. I've accounted for that. er You gotta go in the long way.
00:18:53
Speaker
Yeah, I don't feel attacked, but in the best way. i yeah I mean, we're we're both GMs, Nick. We've both been here. And I mean, we've we've even been here together in the campaign that we co-run.
00:19:09
Speaker
Yeah. And we kept throwing more and more hurdles in front of them in a particular adventure. Yes, yes. And then... We totally succeeded. ah so we totally succeeded.
00:19:21
Speaker
Totally. we We had to cheat, but we succeeded. I was trying to get his way around that. but i mean and I mean, i own my cheating as a GM.
00:19:32
Speaker
Mm-hmm.
00:19:35
Speaker
See, I think that as they climb, they encounter a singular bubble boy. i believe they do. Yes. And they they run into more GM-style traps for the PCs. Yep.
00:19:48
Speaker
yeah And I'm going to list off some things that happen as they they try to ah you know invade this fortress effectively. So for one, Ahsoka's small size allows her to bypass a door, meaning that it was a good idea for her to come.
00:20:05
Speaker
Right, because the the GM knew that that PC was going to be there. And so they the GM put an obstacle in place to allow that player a moment for their character to shine.
00:20:19
Speaker
Yes. And do something that none of the other player characters could do. Right. And then there's a charger falls down a cliff, alluring the guards. Right. um no because Failed check.
00:20:33
Speaker
Failed check. nc Failed check. And we can't very well have everything go smoothly for them. Yes. It's good that I tried to have these Oh, you could just do the whole re-examine this as a whole, like, if I was feeling the better say if we could just do a whole, like, play-by-play of that. But I'll let you do that, Daryl.
00:20:57
Speaker
Yes. So then clones show up just in time to save an eye. Right? the They're threatening Evan Peel with taking out his one remaining eye.
00:21:08
Speaker
So it's a nice dramatic entrance for the PCs. the The GM set the stage beautifully once they got to where the cell was, describing action that they get there just in the nick of time.
00:21:19
Speaker
Yes. But uh-oh, the Jedi only has half the info. Well, yeah, and you that... Things can't go that quickly because, well, you know we're only 15 minutes into our game session. Nobody wants to be done and go home that soon.
00:21:37
Speaker
Yep. So, oh, there has to be a reason to free the rest of the prisoners. Yes. And it also makes sense that yeah you don't want one person to have all of the information.
00:21:52
Speaker
huh Obviously. And then i put down here Magnetism Trap. Yes, the hallway's magnetized, so... The PCs are fond of using their lightsabers, so we...
00:22:06
Speaker
and using the Force to blow over droids. So we magnetize the floor and the walls of the corridor and the ceiling. And one of them has a sirenatic arm.
00:22:17
Speaker
Mm-hmm. ah Yep, and so the lightsabers are stuck to the ceiling. The commando droids can't be just tossed down the hallway with the Force because they're magnetized in place.
00:22:31
Speaker
weve The GM has come up with ways to counter all of the PC's favorite tricks. If only they could do the mace window screw removal technique. Forced it gentle.
00:22:44
Speaker
Well, that's only in in the in in the past. that This is the Clone Wars, not Clone Wars. Yeah, making 3D models for the screws come out would just be too much.
00:22:58
Speaker
Too many polygons. Too many tiny polygons. Yep. And so they get to the the other cells and we find out that Evan Peel's captain is ah Captain

Tarkin's Role and Jedi Strategy Conflicts

00:23:13
Speaker
Tarkin. Again with the dun-dun-dun! Mm-hmm.
00:23:18
Speaker
You would remember him from episode four. Yes, I do remember him from episode four. And Obi-Wan wants to split the party.
00:23:30
Speaker
As always happens in a good RPG session. Uh-huh, yeah, that's the best idea. And Tarkin wants the party to stay together. Mm-hmm. And they split the party with Tarkin in Team Anakin.
00:23:45
Speaker
Yes, and Tarkin working with Skywalker. They do not get along. The tunnel's clear! Looks like Obi-Wan's distraction worked. Things seem to be going as planned.
00:23:57
Speaker
It's when things do not go as planned that concerns me. What then? It's when things don't go as planned that we Jedi are at our best. Trust me. I deserve my trust for those who take action, General Skywalker.
00:24:12
Speaker
Then let me remind you. We rescued you back there, and I reserve my trust for those who understand gratitude, Captain Tarkin.
00:24:26
Speaker
the and of like And then the episode ends. And that yeah that kind of feels like an odd place end the episode, honestly. like But honestly, because of the tension between those characters going forward in the franchise is what it may seem like odd that that's the ending. It's like,
00:24:52
Speaker
This is the first time that they are interacting with each other when we first see them on... Spoiler alert. The Death Star.
00:25:03
Speaker
Oh, yeah. And the roles are somewhat reversed. Mm-hmm.
00:25:10
Speaker
And also, while we're at it, remember Anakin's attitude about Tarkin and... and you thinking that Tarkin's not showing enough gratitude.
00:25:21
Speaker
Just put a pin in that. We might revisit that here in a little bit. um Yes, perhaps so. And so that takes us straight into the next episode, Counter-Attack, Season 3, Episode 19.
00:25:36
Speaker
Anakin and Obi-Wan search for a way out of the Citadel prison. So Team Obi-Wan climbs through an access shaft. There's a probe droid.
00:25:48
Speaker
That they run into. Which sounds an alert. And the hatches in this access shaft. Start closing. And they cut one of the clone troopers in half. Off screen.
00:26:02
Speaker
Real intense. But you hear a squish. As he's cut in half. And remember. This is a kids show. Yep. And so the warden of this prison, he has Dooku on call.
00:26:16
Speaker
And Dooku is not exactly ah very excited about the fact that a prison break is happening. And this warden character, i didn't write much about him down, but i remember he he comes off as kind of pathetic in a way.
00:26:31
Speaker
does. Honestly, i I did a rewatch about it like a week ago, and he kind of sounds like a discount, like Christopher Walken. Like, not enough to like, be, like, Christopher Walken impressive, but, like, he's supposed to sound, like, like you said, like, not impressive.
00:26:48
Speaker
Mm-hmm. But, you know, that's definitely, that's definitely supposed to be the point of the character, is that he is in charge, but he does not radiate a great deal of power or charisma.
00:27:02
Speaker
the Power, charisma, competence. Mm-hmm. The power comes with the facility, and it's, It's impressiveness. It's the Citadel. Yes. Unless it's his ability to run it.
00:27:16
Speaker
He just needs to be a warm body filing the paperwork. um And then we get Anakin. And the fear comes from it. Nick? Yep. right, yeah, so we get Anakin. He gets a surprise attack on a spy droid, which must be rather impressive. I imagine those things' perception is, like, huge.
00:27:36
Speaker
And as they're going along, Tarkin just starts waxing on about how impressed he is with the Citadel. And of course, Tarkin likes a prison that might contain Jedi.
00:27:50
Speaker
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. And he doesn't get along well with Ahsoka, just as he didn't get along with Anakin in the previous episode. Well, I mean, yeah it runs in the in the found family.
00:28:02
Speaker
Yes. Foresatting is a literary device. Yes. Next up, we get R2 allegedly captured. Yeah, and you the the battle droids you pose as battle droids that capture him, and you know one of them you know kind of you know buries himself in the part, and you know shoves at R2 and when they're alone R2 you know kind of gives him some grief for that.
00:28:35
Speaker
Yeah. Next up Ahsoka explodes wall.
00:28:42
Speaker
Yeah and you know Nothing like a ah nice explosion. Yes, yes, we do look we do appreciate good explosions around here. And as she's as she's setting the charges on that wall, you know, some battle droids are coming after them. So she just grabs some of the thermal detonators and just kind of rolls them over there and takes those out. So Ahsoka has a bit of a moment to shine.
00:29:05
Speaker
We love it. We love it. Yes. The child soldier is child soldiering, but also child is very effective. We love it whenever she annihilates all who dare oppose her, as she should.
00:29:17
Speaker
Right? and As a good Jedi should. Yes, yes. Asterisk. Next up, Obi-Wan is too predictable.
00:29:31
Speaker
I don't remember why he was too predictable. I don't either. I believe it like the antagonists were able to counter his like his scheme to like get get to the landing pad.
00:29:44
Speaker
Ah, yes. Yes, that sounds about right. And then Ahsoka and Anakin enter the tube. It's the tube, y'all. I don't remember that. They they go into the tube.
00:29:59
Speaker
i just remember I guess I was just very impressed by the tube. like It was filled with traps and stuff. hu And then R2 rescues Obi-Wan. yeah Getting him out of that situation.
00:30:13
Speaker
And they they all meet back up again, and and we have Anakin saying, sorry I'm late, and Obi-Wan saying, nice of you to join us. Again, it's like poetry, so if they rhyme...
00:30:24
Speaker
Because that exchange comes up a lot in this series. Yes. I mean, not just Clone Wars, but all of Star Wars. Yes. And Tarkin continues to lack faith in the Jedi.
00:30:37
Speaker
Of course he does. Yeah. He doesn't think that they're going to do it. That prevents, like, the enemy forces from following them. Yes, yes. They explode the tube. Again, and this is a good point to say, like...
00:30:55
Speaker
You know that since we've been watching it, I've been contemplating the increase in animation. The animation is just like, at this point, it's like going from like 10 times the details to like hundreds of levels of like impressiveness.
00:31:12
Speaker
Oh yes, they're doing an excellent job with the animation here. It is growing like... Like even... even the the first season and the movie were good, but there were some janky elements.
00:31:27
Speaker
By now, it's all... It's like... the quality grows and grows. And like it is all really great. It's fantastic. ah Then, the allied droids, they get figured out.
00:31:42
Speaker
Yep, they they figure out that those droids are... um reprogrammed and are working for the Republic forces. And looks like this leads into Echo getting blasted.
00:31:57
Speaker
Alas, poor Echo, we hardly knew ye. And then the shuttle that they've been trying to get to. Yeah. Oh yeah, but the shuttle that they've been trying to get to this entire episode, it's destroyed.
00:32:08
Speaker
It is. Couple of weeks. Master Kenobi, what has happened? I'm afraid we've had a situation with the shuttles. By situation, he means big explosion.
00:32:23
Speaker
I love me some Annie Wan banter like that. it' It's just... Honestly, I think that's... Honestly, never figured out, like, do you prefer the Annie Obi-Wan stuff or the Ahsoka stuff in this?
00:32:41
Speaker
Well, see, there's more running Anakin-Obi-Wan banter, because the Anakin and Obi-Wan banter is buddy cop banter. hu And then the... That's what every prequel person wanted from from the prequels.
00:33:01
Speaker
Yes. And then the Anakin Ahsoka banter is big brother, little sister, parent, child banter. Student mentor. Yeah. It's to totally different styles of banter.

Obi-Wan and Ahsoka Dynamics

00:33:15
Speaker
And just the, the, when the buddy cop banter between Anakin and Obi-Wan hits, it's just a beautiful thing to see. But Daryl, it's gold what about the rare and elusive,
00:33:30
Speaker
Obi-Wan Ahsoka banter.
00:33:35
Speaker
That's also, I'm not sure what dynamic to call that. That's like, yo, that's like, I'm thinking about it, five instances, maybe?
00:33:47
Speaker
and And when it is, it's like, oh, they're gold, like,
00:33:54
Speaker
it's like cool uncle banter yeah but sometimes he also has to yeah you know how sometimes the cool uncle also has to just you turn on a dime and occasionally be the the voice of reason and discipline who that's their dynamic yes it's full health yeah He's the cool uncle because Ahsoka is Anakin's responsibility.
00:34:19
Speaker
so it's like, yeah we we can we can do all of this and then I send you back to Anakin. Yes. i sugar no But when he's on TARS, he has to like, okay, you you messed up. but like I gotta be the responsible guy.
00:34:36
Speaker
ah Yes, I have to be a disciplinarian now. But now that the shuttle has been destroyed, they have to cross some near impassable terrain to get to the rendezvous point.
00:34:50
Speaker
Mm hmm. And that leads us into... We're all very decisive. yeah Yes. That leads us into the third episode in the arc, the conclusion of the arc, Citadel Rescue, Season 3, Episode 20.
00:35:07
Speaker
Anakin and Obi-Wan must find a way to escape the Citadel. So were they having trouble coming up with descriptions? Because... Right before this, it's Anakin and Obi-Wan search for a way out of the Citadel prison. And Anakin and Obi-Wan must find a way to escape the Citadel.
00:35:25
Speaker
And again, we are copying these off of the ah Disney Plus. These are the descriptions that were given from Netflix. Yes. Right.
00:35:36
Speaker
That's not someone that had rewatched it on Netflix. like These are the exact ones, and they're pretty bad. and Very vague. And I mean, you want them to be kind of vague. You want them to be vague, but enticing.
00:35:49
Speaker
ah But when you have episodes in a row that have almost exactly the same description, it's like, didn't I just watch this one, though? Nope, this is a new episode.
00:36:00
Speaker
and there's been multiple glitches within Netflix where, like, stuff has been, like, shifted around. So, like, it's it's it's just, like, I can understand why they made it so simple, it's like, yeah.
00:36:14
Speaker
Mm-hmm.
00:36:19
Speaker
We're going to get into the next episode. Starting up, we get a cool magma cave. and It it is very cool looking scenery.
00:36:29
Speaker
my Excellent animation. whole plant This whole planet and the Citadel itself is a great setting. I mean, I brought it up whenever we saw the planet from the very beginning, but like, this is just a really cool looking planet, y'all.
00:36:43
Speaker
I love the art design here. And the Citadel itself is a cool and well thought out dungeon prison. Mm-hmm. And the gang, they need to hold out for a rescue because their escape ship is, ah you know, exploded.
00:36:59
Speaker
Yep, they have they have to hold out for a rescue. Their ship has exploded. All sorts of things are going wrong. Dogs and cats are living together. It's mass hysteria.
00:37:10
Speaker
And at this point, whenever watching the episode, ah Nick overthought the villain so hard his brain used up all of the internet bandwidth. Now, now you you must elaborate, because what was what happened?
00:37:27
Speaker
Well, Nick, why why did you overthink this villain so much? Well, I was thinking about this ah this Christopher Walken lizard man villain.
00:37:40
Speaker
i was like i had so many ideas. her And I was trying to describe how they're going to try explain him. how to explain them And then my internet failed.
00:37:54
Speaker
Yes. Like, hard. he Like, everything failed. All at once. But, you know, I think the main thing just... It took like 15 20 minutes to fix it.
00:38:09
Speaker
Mm-hmm. I think the main thing is just, previously we've discussed the villain a little bit and how he's kind of pathetic. And it seemed like, Nick, you didn't you didn't get the idea that he was intentionally pathetic. It seemed like you you thought that was the thing. I thought he had a lot more going on for him because I'd only seen this arc a couple times.
00:38:37
Speaker
But ultimately, beat partially because of the the internet crapping out on us, was like, oh, yeah. so He's supposed to be pathetic.
00:38:50
Speaker
Yes, yes, that that is the point of the character. he Welcome to the point, Nick. ah His threat is the fact that he is in charge of this station. He, as a character, is not threatening in and of himself.
00:39:04
Speaker
Again, that's kind of the big benefit of you being a new person watching it, because I remember when I watched it, was like, this guy's cool and dangerous.
00:39:15
Speaker
Mm-hmm. He is in a position that is dangerous. He himself is not particularly dangerous. No, you know, he is not.
00:39:26
Speaker
So that was a big learning point for me, and that's why I'm glad that we were able to explain that. And also my internet kind of sucks. And next we have ah we have an exciting moment.
00:39:39
Speaker
We have ah the honor to serve under R2 into instant death combo. The droids are gone. the the The fake droids are gone. They died. Yep, they're gone. Oh, bye. D-squad.
00:39:56
Speaker
We're done with them now. Point zero. Yes. And then we get the bad doggos. they There's dogs now.
00:40:07
Speaker
Yes.
00:40:10
Speaker
Yep, and... You
00:40:14
Speaker
ah you know, we we have a
00:40:19
Speaker
A whole thing with um that you have a note here on.

Philosophical Debates and Heroic Sacrifices

00:40:25
Speaker
Yes, I've got quote. It says, yeah we aren't soldiers. We are peacekeepers.
00:40:32
Speaker
And Anakin seems to have a bit of a change of heart about Tarkin. Why did Master Peel have to share half the intel with that guy? It's like he's not even grateful we rescued him.
00:40:46
Speaker
Captain Tarkin feels the Jedi should be... relieved from the burden of leading the war effort. That's ridiculous. Maybe. But we aren't soldiers. We're peacekeepers.
00:40:57
Speaker
The Jedi Code often prevents us from going far enough to achieve victory. A rather simple point of view. Either way, he is a good captain. Hmm.
00:41:09
Speaker
Yeah. There's like five different perspectives right in there. And Anakin's the one who, you know, like ago, twenty minutes ago was saying, ah you're not grateful enough, Tarkin.
00:41:25
Speaker
you You need to be grateful that we saved your butt. And now he's like, oh no. Ahsoka's griping that he's not grateful and Anakin's like, no, no.
00:41:36
Speaker
you've He's got some points here. The...
00:41:41
Speaker
like the military government has some power and stuff like that. Something, something. yeah Let's not think about that.
00:41:53
Speaker
Episode two. Let's not think about episode two where where Anakin had that very normal conversation with Padme about like, well, maybe there should be a dictatorship.
00:42:05
Speaker
a Dictators are cool. I like dictators. great yeah and and that was And that was before he killed not just the men, but the women and the children, which is what really pushed her over the edge and into totally digging him.
00:42:29
Speaker
So, you know, he sees Tarkin, he's like, whoa, dude, you're into murder? Nice, I'm into that too. You want to annihilate all who dare oppose you? ah That sounds great, man.
00:42:41
Speaker
I'm teaching my battle on that right now. Instant besties. Autocracy? Going against like going Going to the state?
00:42:54
Speaker
Giving in to sadism?
00:42:58
Speaker
Did we just become best friends? Wait.
00:43:03
Speaker
Wait. was Was Tarkin's mother's name Shmi too? Oh no.
00:43:11
Speaker
Shmi! Why did you say that name? damn The next thing you're going to say is like that Darth Vader did not approve of what happened to the gore men.
00:43:24
Speaker
He wanted the gore women and the gore children to
00:43:31
Speaker
That didn't work, Nick. It didn't work. No. So anyway, ah now now they're fighting the dogs.
00:43:40
Speaker
And it's beautiful. Yep, and... And the Jedi that they came to rescue... Evan Peel, yeah. He dies and gives Ahsoka the data and a talk. It's actually rather brutal. Because she doesn't think she deserves to be the one to carry the data. She doesn't think that she's responsible enough for this, you know, this big responsibility.
00:44:02
Speaker
I've got to say, it like that was pretty brutal... That Brevenfield. And this is a kids show, remember? Yes. And we didn't we didn't talk about this Jedi ah very much at all. Is there anything that y'all want to say about him at all?
00:44:18
Speaker
Before we move on to... yeah not Not really. He never really stuck out to me. It's not whole lot, but I would say that as a deaf, it was pretty brutal to having to sort of rass around that.
00:44:36
Speaker
Probably would amounts like a, like a jackal. Mm-hmm.
00:44:41
Speaker
And, uh, yeah, he gets a burial at lava. Which, you know, pretty cool. Pretty cool. When I go, i ah I've already decided that you know before I go, I'm going to write a Star Wars RPG adventure that I want Nick to run in my memory.
00:45:07
Speaker
ah you know, at like a memorial. Right. Right. But, but I want all of you. ah Nick sounds very excited at this prospect.
00:45:19
Speaker
He's like, hot damn. I'm going to kill him. ah Now I really am going to kill him so that I can run this game. Um, But then I want you... That's why I'm quiet.
00:45:33
Speaker
I want you to cremate me in a volcano like this. Nice. Sounds like a plan. And if you don't, Nick doesn't get the adventure to run.
00:45:45
Speaker
Oh no. Nick, we gotta do it.
00:45:53
Speaker
Nick is contemplating my death in even greater detail now. Yeah. It's not just going to be a stab anymore. It's going to be much more intricate elaborate. It's going to be elaborate. ah Fine.
00:46:06
Speaker
yeah Honestly, like I have my own preparations in mind for when I pass. yeah no now Now, I'm joking about the lava thing.
00:46:16
Speaker
I really am going to write that adventure not to be too morbid that I would like Nick to run for everyone.
00:46:26
Speaker
Being created in lava is pretty cool. Yeah. Yep, there's going to be pre-gens. um you you're You're all going to be playing Star Wars-ified versions of yourselves.
00:46:37
Speaker
That'll be lovely. ah Just pick pick a volcano up. Mount St. Helens is a good choice.
00:46:46
Speaker
Nick is getting far too into this idea. Maybe I shouldn't have said anything. This is a very good volcano to go into.
00:46:58
Speaker
Mick's now trying to figure how to chuck me in a volcano while I'm still alive. We better move to the next We should. oh wait, because your next line... Excuse me, your next line doesn't help.
00:47:13
Speaker
Yes, so the next scene, they have a big action sequence with giant lava falls, and they're very similar to the episode two waterfalls that...
00:47:23
Speaker
you know, Anakin and Padme hang out around, except it's sort of like, it's almost like a counterpoint to that scene, it almost feels like, with the giant lava falls surrounding this giant, almost like crater of magma.
00:47:35
Speaker
but but there is But there is no game of who's the schmoopy. No, no, this is a murder scene, reflective the fact that this is lava instead of water, naturally. Yeah, so no heads to schmoopy.
00:47:48
Speaker
Mm-hmm. in then It's like poetry, so that they rhyme. Yes, yes, exactly. And then R2 Smoke Distraction.
00:48:00
Speaker
Yep, and Anakin and Tarkin then have an interesting encounter.
00:48:13
Speaker
You know, it's not wise to argue with Master Peel. It's certainly not a good career move. General Skywalker, I stand by my principles, no matter what.
00:48:24
Speaker
Besides, I needn't worry about my career. I've fallen into favor with the Chancellor. He shall support me. Oh? I happen to know the Chancellor quite well myself.
00:48:36
Speaker
No. Really? Really. a No, I'm his favorite. No, I'm his favorite.
00:48:47
Speaker
But once again, foreshadowing is a literary device. Yes. and And then Ahsoka saves Tarkin. By killing the Citadel commander.
00:48:58
Speaker
Yes. Good old child soldier, child soldiering. Mm-hmm. And so at this point, this mission is pretty much wrapping up. they They get rescued. They head back to Coruscant. They head back to the Jedi Temple.
00:49:13
Speaker
um And we we have a nice little push and pull tug of war kind of thing because Tarkin has his pat his half of the Nexus route.
00:49:24
Speaker
o and Ahsoka has Evan Peel's half, and and the Jedi want to debrief them and get the whole thing.
00:49:36
Speaker
Yes. And Tarkin says, well, my orders are to only give the information to the Chancellor.
00:49:46
Speaker
And Ahsoka's like, well, my orders are to give my half only to the Jedi Council. o And then Yoda gets kind of wishing, well, we'll figure something out here.
00:50:00
Speaker
But we're already seeing you we're seeing some cracks in the relationship between the Chancellor's office in particular and the Jedi.
00:50:11
Speaker
a And from my perspective and theorizing, though, I know that it has been like actually explain like I feel that Anakin does have a so good give that information because I have a strong feeling of what that information is useful for.
00:50:37
Speaker
hundred sixty 66. Yeah. Sorry. I was coughing again. hmm. And. And so then then there's there's a little conversation. I'm teeing you up here, Lauren. There's there's a little conversation between Ahsoka and Master Plo.
00:50:57
Speaker
Yes. And it's that ah he notes that Ahsoka was assigned to the mission. She didn't technically sneak on. Right. Anakin asks him, hey, did you... She said that you assigned her to the mission. Did you send her? like...
00:51:13
Speaker
Well, ah I guess I did. did he? Wait. Dave Floating, what are you doing here in the scene? ah And I stand by my earlier statement that this entire arc feels like an RPG scenario. it i'm not it's It's a classic adventure.
00:51:38
Speaker
Honestly, like, If I was feeling a little better, I think we could we could easily like turn this entire adventure in maybe an hour and a half and recreate the whole thing with actual checks and stuff like that.
00:51:56
Speaker
Yeah, you basically could. Easily. It's a classic adventure story. And I'm not saying that that's a bad thing either. I'm just saying that's the vibe that I got. Yes, yes.
00:52:08
Speaker
But then, as the episode closes, we have this.
00:52:18
Speaker
ah job well done, General Skywalker.
00:52:24
Speaker
I wish more love that music there. Military sensibilities.
00:52:31
Speaker
Perhaps I can inform the Chancellor of your valor.
00:52:35
Speaker
I'm not sure what to think of your new ally. Well, I think we need people like him. This is a war. If we aren't willing to do what it takes to win, we risk losing everything we try to protect.
00:52:50
Speaker
Unfortunately, war tends to distort our point of view. If we sacrifice our code, even for victory, we may lose that which is most important. a la ama.
00:53:06
Speaker
And i mentioned clip um bu um ah and I mentioned it while the clip was playing.
00:53:17
Speaker
I love that we got that little hint of that. when Tarkin was was talking to Anakin and expressing his

Musical Scores and Cinematic Inspiration

00:53:26
Speaker
admiration. admiration ah great insert.
00:53:28
Speaker
can Kevin Kiner is just incredible. um I brought it up with him, Valoran earlier, Kevin Kiner wanted to do like more unique stuff early on, which is great.
00:53:42
Speaker
It's early Clone Wars stuff. Honestly, it's so unique and interesting. But once he got to use like the actual like themes and stuff like that, as the story could be more condensed.
00:53:56
Speaker
And... the little the Every little aspect that he brings in, those classic themes, feels so important. Yeah, it... we He does a lot of original stuff, but then little moments like that, he just kind of punctuates and underlines with themes that we are familiar with and associate certain ways.
00:54:23
Speaker
and Again, like I love his whole discography, his whole atmosphere stuff. I really love his early stuff because it's so...
00:54:34
Speaker
away from the classic Star Wars, but still in the same vein. But his stuff, when he needs to bring in the Star Wars classic theme, he brings it in at the right moment.
00:54:47
Speaker
He brings it in at the right moment and in the right way and just chef's kiss. Oh, yes. It's beautiful. and And... Go ahead.
00:54:59
Speaker
yeah like I would say that it's hard to beat the... the og the the classic Star Wars composer. he definitely knows how to pay respects and keep things in the world.
00:55:15
Speaker
For sure. And that whole conversation too, it kind ah kind of leans into, you spoiler alert, the very reason why the Jedi have been put in charge of the the Republic military.
00:55:35
Speaker
you But we'll get to that when we get to Revenge of the Sith. Spoiler and i believe that's like the...
00:55:47
Speaker
like We do have to show you that. and We also have to show you the parody one. Oh, yeah. And so that, as they say, is that.
00:56:01
Speaker
Mm-hmm. It sure is. It's the end ah of that arc. it and Pretty light on on meat to it, which is fine. You need but it's just a pretty standard...
00:56:18
Speaker
fun action-adventure storyline after the complete introspection-heavy, crazy weirdness of Mortis.
00:56:32
Speaker
And before that, the witches of the mist. Mm-hmm. like this this is This is actually like more like a classic like ah two leave like a classes like World War II POW escape movies.
00:56:49
Speaker
like it's It's just like prison breaks, behind enemy lines, war flicks. It's just more what you'd imagine from.
00:57:01
Speaker
Stuff that like George Lucas was inspired by as a kid.
00:57:07
Speaker
Or young adult. Yes. this Classic war movies.
00:57:14
Speaker
So Lauren, what did you think of the Citadel arc? Well, for those in the audience who don't get to see the scripts, ah all of our scripts are color coded.
00:57:25
Speaker
And so depending on ah who has the most to say, that will determine what color all of the text is in any given scripts episode. So Betsy's color is green.
00:57:38
Speaker
So last episode, we had a very green script. The show notes were very, very green. Yes. today ah Today's script is very purple because my script is purple.
00:57:51
Speaker
this is why important This is the sort of episode where I take lots of notes because it's a very action-heavy episode. And I like to bring out the moments that are cool action moments. You know, the the the cool animation moments, that sort of stuff. And so can say that i I did interject where I had some notes to make, but ultimately, even if I had put them in the script, it you'd probably be the the dominant one in this one.
00:58:22
Speaker
This is a purple episode. yeah And in that regard, you know, whenever coming into the show, what I really wanted to see was I wanted to see Ahsoka and Anakin working together to you know, to accomplish missions.
00:58:35
Speaker
That was this. This was exactly what I wanted to see out of the series. And we even got some very exciting Tarkin moments, some really exciting foreshadowing for the original trilogy.
00:58:47
Speaker
and i'd write on And it the Bubble Boys. The Bubble Boys will also here. So basically, everything that I want out of a Star Wars episode, everything that I was expecting out of these episodes, this is it.
00:59:01
Speaker
Axon, you love the planet. And R2. We got some good R2 moments. Everything is here. All of the best lore and stuff.
00:59:13
Speaker
um Right on. like
00:59:17
Speaker
After a whole bunch of weirdness that you did like.

Action Highlights and Future Teasers

00:59:20
Speaker
You loved the weirdness. Yeah, yeah. Oh, yeah. I do love the weirdness. that There was a lot of weirdness there, too. If we had to say, like, what is, like, the base level, like, yours, vibe.
00:59:32
Speaker
Mm-hmm. this This is it. And that's honestly a good description of, like, a good Clone Wars episode. A whole lot of, like, characters, unique environments, unique characters.
00:59:46
Speaker
baddies and environments, stuff like that. this is This is everything that I would really want out of a Star Wars episode. They did it excellently. Fantastic. I am glad that you enjoyed them.
00:59:59
Speaker
It was a fun fun set of episodes. It might be worth, kind of like Nick said, you know maybe coming back and re-examining again, strictly from an RPG series.
01:00:17
Speaker
standpoint you Yeah, yeah. I can't wait until y'all have us, ah you know, invade this prison and you have every single trap exactly as it was in the episodes.
01:00:30
Speaker
Spoiler alert, um in the Far Orbit project, the players have ah discussed breaking into a prison that they were almost sent to. ah Not this same one.
01:00:43
Speaker
And the terrain wouldn't match, but... but good for I'm not in that session. It is one that we've looked into. and That we discussed looking into like for pretense of like ideas. For traps and schemes.
01:00:57
Speaker
Yep. But... But yeah, so... but yeah yeah And i guess we we're we're we're bringing the we're bringing this one in for a landing you know faster than we normally do because the episodes themselves went by pretty fast.
01:01:16
Speaker
They were pretty nonstop action. Yeah, pretty much. Honestly, I think like the next the our next Clone Watch will be the actual finale of this season, two-parter.
01:01:29
Speaker
All right. but and But our next couple of episodes, um we will be taking a quick break from Clone Watch because there's there's a couple of small little independent movies that no one has heard of coming out in July.
01:01:44
Speaker
um One is... ah his this new superhero kind of thing called superman um yeah i heard about that and the other he he's the guy that wears his underwear on the outside yeah yeah that guy and then then there's one that i hear that marvel is gonna try making some movies and they're gonna put out a movie based fantastic four Oh, the Fantastic Four! Those like, that's my favorite superhero group!
01:02:14
Speaker
I can't believe they've never made a movie about them before! They haven't. They have never made a ah movie about them before. Yep, definitely none of those. and yeah but Definitely not one by Josh Trank, who just, like, was can she was off out of his complete and utter mind the whole time.
01:02:37
Speaker
Pixar definitely didn't meet them to it by decades. But, uh, are you alright with... Wait. Is it... Because we were planning on watching more... ah picture Have you actually watched that one?
01:02:52
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, i have. oh yeah i've i've won i Well, ah I never watched Fanforestick.
01:03:00
Speaker
That's not about the... That doesn't exist. Yeah, yeah, exactly. because I've never watched Fanforestick because it doesn't exist. But we did watch, earlier this week, we watched an animated Fantastic Four animated series.
01:03:17
Speaker
And it's the only one that is But here's the big question. Have you watched the Roger Corman Fantastic Four? I haven't.
01:03:28
Speaker
that was all That was only filmed so that Canon could keep the rights to the movie. I never saw that one. I have. I mean, it was never released. it was It only exists in bootleg.
01:03:43
Speaker
but Yeah. It's a whole thing. I have a bootleg copy. Nick, is that is that where we're going to watch next week? If I can figure out if I put it on my TV.
01:03:55
Speaker
All right. That sounds like it would be fun.
01:04:01
Speaker
But... Mm-hmm. over the effort dead dad make Nick, don't make me cut out all of this talk of you bootlegging movies and watching them illegally.
01:04:15
Speaker
Oh, no.
01:04:18
Speaker
So, but before Nick incriminates himself any further, we should probably call an end to this episode. and And then... And we're ready for bullying me As we normally should do.
01:04:32
Speaker
Yes. Bully, bully, bully. um We're going to eviscerate you now, Nick. Nick nick is threatening to kill me. So anything that I do or say to him at this point is self-defense.
