Anticipation for West Ham Game & Bon Jovi Excitement

00:00:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Newcastle. My name's Ian McKay. I am the host tonight and I'm joined by, and I did have a clapping track to play, but I've chickened out of it, Kev.
00:00:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm joined by my friend Kevin Esther on on ah quite a late Friday night to look forward to um look forward to the West Ham game.
00:00:38
Kev
Absolutely.
00:00:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think, Kev, how are you doing? Are you all right, bud?
00:00:42
Kev
Loving it. Absolutely loving it. It's been off term for me. So more than happy. Loads of time with the kids. And I haven't told you this yet. So we're saving it for the main pod. I'm seeing Bon Jovi twice next year at Wembley. I'm seeing them on a Friday and a Sunday. I got tickets for both gigs.
00:00:56
Kev
So today's been a great day.
00:00:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah. And what are you going to see? Some sort of psychiatrist on the Saturday in between?
00:01:05
Kev
Hey, um I might. I might. Who cares? But hey, remember my two kids. I can't not go and see Bon Jovi.
00:01:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
No. Well, you've got Bonnie and Jovi, haven't you? You're two little ones.
00:01:14
Kev
ah ah Exactly.
00:01:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it was always on the cards. I think if you'd let them know that, they would have got your tickets, even if you hadn't been able to get your tickets.
00:01:21
Kev
I said that. I said I would have been able to meet the band. I would have been able to meet Jon Bon Jovi himself, but I haven't let anybody know. I might just shout it from my rooftops on air social media. Let's get that around.
00:01:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, I hear that that they all watch the Daily Newcastle over there in America anyway, so they'll probably know now, Kev.
00:01:35
Kev
go. Somebody will tell Jon Bon Jovi.

Reflecting on Newcastle vs. Tottenham Game

00:01:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway, we are here to talk about the weekend's football, particularly the West Ham game for Newcastle on Sunday. However, we do have, and I do have to make a bit of a confession here, we do have a little bit of unfinished business.
00:01:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
I was scheduled to do an immediate post-match interview, post-match interview, post-match review,
00:01:55
Kev
Thank you.
00:02:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
of the Newcastle Tottenham game on Wednesday night. But I was at the Newcastle Tottenham game on Wednesday night. So that was always going to be a bit of a toughie. However, I was meant to do a review with Joanne yesterday. And at six o'clock, I went to sleep. I dozed off.
00:02:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
And poor Joanne was messaging me going, oh, we're doing it. we're doing it. Slept through all of that. And I woke up way too late to be able to record anything. So what I mean is, on the Daily Newcastle, we haven't,
00:02:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
addressed how good the Newcastle reserve team, because let's be honest, there were eight changes to the team that had played on this on the Saturday, um how good they were against Tottenham. They made Tottenham side that had won four and drawn one of their five away games, sitting third in the Premier League, was just as straightforward as when they battered Bradford in the previous round.
00:02:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, presuming you were there, Kel, because you're there all the time,
00:02:54
Kev
Exactly.
00:02:57
Kev
Yep. Yep.
00:02:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
What were your highlights, bud?

Standout Players: Ramsdale & Shah

00:03:02
Kev
You know what? It's strange because I thought was it it was a very good all-round performance, but Ramsdale? Ramsdale kept a clean sheet, pulled off two fantastic saves, and oh my God, he is so comfortable with his feet.
00:03:14
Kev
um So Ramsdale was a big highlight for me. I'm not saying drop Nick Pope because I think Nick Pope's still number one for now. I think Pope's had a great season and so far, actually, other than kind of half a game against Arsenal.
00:03:25
Kev
and So Ramsdale was a big highlight, and I think the other one for me...
00:03:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:03:30
Kev
and it was it was It sounds silly because he is a highlight, but I think it's Fabian Shaw. Because I've been seeing for ages, Shaw and Chow I'd love to see, and I get loads of stick. Oh, Botman's brilliant. He's the best centre-half had since Woodgate.
00:03:45
Kev
I just, I don't know. I think Botman's good, but for me, Fabian Shaw, the way he plays with the ball, not just because he scored, the way he plays out from the back, I thought him and Chow complemented each other so well I think for me, them two would be my mom start and centre-half pair.
00:04:02
Kev
um But yeah, they were two main takeaways. Obviously, Tonali was brilliant. Valtomar was brilliant. bought But the two main takeaways was Ramsdale and Shah. Shah's got to come back in.
00:04:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
I agree with you highlighting those guys. And part two, we're going to try. I know Joanne and Nicola previewed game this morning. and
00:04:21
Kev
Hmm.
00:04:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we are going to try and pick a team to start and see how close we get. Can I just say, on my solo preview for the Spurs match, i this was always going to be good when Eddie Hamraid ate changes.
00:04:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Of course, my suggested rotation is bound to happen because everyone got rotated. But I did say Ramsdale would come in, put your house on it.
00:04:40
Kev
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:04:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
I had Kraft in for Trippier. I had Bottman with his bad head just sitting this one out and bring Fabian Schaar back. and have to admit, I thought it was an important game that we would see the yeah Bruno Tonali-Joe Linton threesome.
00:04:57
Kev
Mm-hmm.
00:04:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
But starting starting with Willock and Ramsey was a little bit of a surprise for me. m I think I said he could try with ram Ramsey Joe Linton were 50-50.
00:05:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
But Joe Willock... Joe Willock played really quite athletically.
00:05:11
Kev
Yeah.
00:05:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
and One great run from a big kick by Ramsdale where he went round Paulinia and created...
00:05:19
Kev
yeah He got me assist as well.
00:05:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he got his assist, yes. He missed a header though, didn't he? It looked like his head was truck hiss head was made like a house brick and it came off one of the corners.
00:05:25
Kev
He did. He did, mister.
00:05:29
Kev
Yeah. I think when I watched it back, it was like he was going to shoot, but then he saw Volta Marder and thought, I'm just going knock it back across the box because he didn't back himself in the air.
00:05:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:05:38
Kev
think he was just caught in two minds, which is mental when you're in the six-yard box. You've got to hit it towards goal. But other than that, I agree with you. I thought Willick looked very good and I think it'll give... Probably not Howe something to think about because i think our midfield three when they're all fit is very hard to dislodge. think most midfielders in the Premier League would struggle to dislodge one of them.
00:05:57
Kev
But I think it does give Willock a little bit more trust again in Howe's eyes to maybe get some more minutes off the bench and have an impact.
00:06:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, the thing thing is that Willett came in to rest ah Lewis Miley. So, I mean, Lewis Miley is fighting to get start against him as well.
00:06:11
Kev
Yeah. Hmm.
00:06:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
and As I say, the second half we're going try and pick our starting line-up, so we'll discuss that. I did predict Alanga, can't leave £55 million pans with a talent, sat on the bench.
00:06:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
I saw Alanga came in. That was his best game other than the Barcelona game, I thought, that I'd seen him play.
00:06:32
Kev
Yeah, I agree.
00:06:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Still not totally confident, but yeah, he he was he was involved and his pace was He was not involved not just because he's a super fast runner. i think he did a great run across the box where he was into playing with

Debating Line-Ups for West Ham Game

00:06:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
two or three.
00:06:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
All those one-touch stuff is starting to show through more and more regularly. i think I think we look pretty good.
00:06:55
Kev
Yeah.
00:06:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
And a Barnes in for Gordon was an obvious one as well. So, you know, I did um picked about six of the eight that got. I didn't get Willick to come back in.
00:07:05
Kev
I
00:07:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
That was a step too far.
00:07:10
Kev
think Barnes did well.
00:07:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
But the thing is,
00:07:11
Kev
Barnes again, starting to come good.
00:07:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Barnes was um is excellent.
00:07:14
Kev
yeah And what will say about Alanga, especially in my Tottenham game, you would have noticed, I think, if you were there, but if you watched on TV, maybe not so as much.
00:07:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:07:24
Kev
There's a lot of runs, darting runs he was making, and the ball just wasn't coming because we're still not used to playing with him yet.
00:07:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
a
00:07:29
Kev
It's still just not quite got that like telepathic, I know you're going to go. um But yeah, there was a lot of good runs and I thought, if he just got the ball there or if Shaw had just maybe anticipated it or I think Ramsey had an opportunity to play him in as well. So I think he'll definitely, definitely come good. think there's signs there now that I think he just needs confidence. He needs that first goal.
00:07:50
Kev
And I think he just needs a little bit of love from the fans at home because at at the minute it's been, other than Barcelona, a bit of frustration at home. little bit oh, that hasn't quite worked.
00:07:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:07:58
Kev
And he probably feels that a little bit more with being a new player, whereas someone like Willock it wouldn't affect.
00:07:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:08:02
Kev
But yeah, I think with, I'd probably say give this month, November coming up. Let's give him all of November. And I think by December we'll start seeing the best of him, I hope.
00:08:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it's ah it's all just starting to come together a little bit. do you remember in the second half, a quite nicely worked couple of passes, couple of passes up to Valtemada with his back to goal on the halfway line.
00:08:18
Kev
Ticket tacker.
00:08:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
And just a ah fabulous ball through for Willock to run onto, which he ended up putting over the bar.
00:08:30
Kev
Oh yeah.
00:08:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
but But that's what we need to see. The midfield knowing that they can run into that space and Valtimada will find them immediately.
00:08:40
Kev
Yeah.
00:08:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
that's what That's got to be what they're doing on the on the training ground. And it's starting to come come through.

Cup Draw Reactions: Fulham vs. Liverpool

00:08:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
So anyway, yes, a very, very comfortable 2-0 win.
00:08:45
Kev
Definitely.
00:08:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Could have been more. Barnes could have had a couple of hit the bar with a lovely move and Chow was going to have an assist there. Chow ended up with his assist. no no sorry, he didn't end up with an assist.
00:09:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
He made the interception that set up the second goal, didn't he? Which was, ah again, wonderful performance by him.
00:09:04
Kev
Yep, yep. As good as an
00:09:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's It was as good as, yeah. um And we got drawn at home against Fulham in the quarters. We talked about Fulham a week ago and then really brushed them aside and without playing super well.
00:09:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that's got to be a good draw into the semi-finals again. And I'm very pleased to see that Liverpool won't be crossing our paths in this year's Carabao Cup.
00:09:31
Kev
couldn't have happened to a nicer club.
00:09:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know't ah know, I know. It's just a shame Wolves' comeback didn't quite get Chelsea knocked out for us too, because that that they are the other team.
00:09:39
Kev
Yeah, the lap was stupid as well, wasn't
00:09:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
that they the I think they're the only team in the last... Them and Manu, the only two teams in the last 16 Carabao Cup games to beat us.
00:09:51
Kev
Yeah, yeah.
00:09:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
and ah And they only beat us in that quarter because of Kieran Trippier's mind farts that went on in the last minute.
00:09:57
Kev
Should be on a tough time.
00:10:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
and So, yeah, so well played, the boys. so mad I mean, for that performance and five or six first-choice players to have the night off bodes very, very well for who we're going to put out to play a very out-of-form West Ham.

Speculating Newcastle's Starting Line-Up

00:10:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
And now we're going to hear from Ken now, but afterwards we're going to see if Kevin and I can get close to the starting line-up.
00:11:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now it's usually Michael that gets caught out with that, isn't it? I didn't spot that that was going to happen. But not to worry. Yesterday i caught up with Ken. Um, because as you know, he's a really old pal of mine.
00:11:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, And what I hadn't realized, he's been really ill for the last three months.
00:11:29
Kev
No.
00:11:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Really ill. um But he is all fighting and fit and better now, which is good and getting stronger by the day. And instead of the typical solo pod that I have to do every Wednesday, Ken is coming on very soon as a special guest.
00:11:50
Kev
Yes, Ken.
00:11:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm not sure what we're going to talk about. I'm not sure what we're to talk about because he's a Wrexham supporter. But he does present the Daily Premier League. So imagine that he knows what's going on up there as well.
00:12:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway, Kev. Newcastle. Shall we do 4-3-3?
00:12:06
Kev
Yes.
00:12:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think it's a five at the... It's not a five at the back day, is it? Not a away at West Ham.
00:12:09
Kev
Nope. I think 4-3-3 guaranteed.
00:12:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Who are appalling. West Ham are appalling. I think they've lost... Have they lost all four of their home games in the Premier League so far?
00:12:19
Kev
They've been relegation form.
00:12:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
They might have... I think they have. um Certainly, Potter got sacked because they were so dreadful. And Nuno, who's come in, we like Nuno.
00:12:33
Kev
Yep.
00:12:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
We would have thought that Nuno would have made them defensively solid straight away. But in his first four games, he's managed a draw and three more losses. um So not a lot of improvement, really.
00:12:47
Kev
Oh, it's set up for a typical Newcastle fall, isn't it?
00:12:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah don't want to... This is not a free...
00:12:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, but another goalless draw would be the average, wouldn't it? But no, let's be honest. When we played Tottenham, we were just too good for them. And I think it's going to be a game where we've got a lot of good players. They're all fit and fighting.
00:13:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
To pick the team, Ramsdale was brilliant. But I think it's because Ramsdale must have been brilliant in training all the way since he started. And he's such a good character. This is what elevated Nick Pope, in my view,
00:13:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
to be performing at its highest level that we've seen him in the last three and a bit years.
00:13:30
Kev
Yeah.
00:13:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Pope has been excellent. I think it's still only Liverpool, Arsenal and Barcelona that have managed to score against him.
00:13:38
Kev
yeah
00:13:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is that right? Or was he in when Brighton...
00:13:40
Kev
Brighton. Brighton scored.
00:13:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Brighton as well, wasn't it?
00:13:42
Kev
Yeah.
00:13:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
OK, I'm going to have to stop using that. But nevertheless, he is leading the Premier League clean sheets. That's a golden gloves. Early in the season... But he's at the top of the Golden Gloves competition.
00:13:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I think Pope comes back in on Sunday.
00:13:58
Kev
I agree.
00:13:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
That four is really interesting though, isn't it?
00:13:59
Kev
Yep.
00:14:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fab Shah lost his place because of the concussion protocols, which seemed harsh. Now, he's got back in because Sven Botman, although it wasn't a concussion, it was a nasty cut that had been stapled. So Sven Botman has sat that one out.
00:14:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you think Shah... stays in or does bottom and come and replace him
00:14:28
Kev
Oh my God. I think that's such a good question. Personally, I want Shaw, obviously, because everyone knows my love for Fabian Shaw. I think what Howell will do is probably go Botman.
00:14:41
Kev
And I think the main reason I think that is because Shaw hasn't played a lot of minutes recently and then he's completed a full game on Wednesday night. I know he probably can play someday, but I think it might be a minutes kate type managing thing coming back to the first team.
00:14:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:14:58
Kev
But personally, I want to see Shaw. I think it'll be Botman. I also think actually Botman might be better off dealing with someone like Jared Bowen. coming in from the left, Botman plays left centre-half, obviously Byrne left-back.
00:15:11
Kev
um Bowen coming inside, Botman might be better suited to kind of do a little bit more agile, a little bit more mobile than Fabian Shaw, I guess. But then it would be Chow left centre-half, wouldn't it, if Shaw did play?
00:15:22
Kev
So, I don't know.
00:15:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
where he's done he He did that when
00:15:24
Kev
First question.

Player Rotation Strategies for Upcoming Games

00:15:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bottman went off and he did it against Tottenham and he was fantastic there as well.
00:15:29
Kev
Yeah.
00:15:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
But you've just I've just thought, what I'm factoring by saying that Schar keeps his place is that that means Bottman's super rested for the Athletic Bilbao game on Wednesday in the Champions League.
00:15:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you think this selection for this game will be influenced by who Eddie wants to play on the Wednesday?
00:15:53
Kev
cool
00:15:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
this It must be a mistake. mistake
00:15:56
Kev
I think it will be if we're ahead, but I think resting the big boys like Bruno means that I think in Eddie's head, this West Ham game is probably bigger. Not bigger, that's the wrong word, but it's definitely more of a priority.
00:16:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, yeah.
00:16:09
Kev
I think the weight of West Ham in Howe's head is probably more important to have the big players playing because at home, I think Ramsey, Willock and Schar and everybody else who came into the team proved that at home against Spurs, at home against Bilbao,
00:16:24
Kev
It's easier to come into a team um when you're at St James' I guess. So I think ah think it'll be the bigger players for West Ham if he had to pick.
00:16:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay.
00:16:31
Kev
But I think we'll see very similar lineups, both teams.
00:16:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, despite your dissenting voice to bring Fab Scha back, I would agree with you. I think it's Botman and Chow at centre-half.
00:16:42
Kev
Yeah.
00:16:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's a left and a right centre-half as well, which is a little sort of probably insignificant detail, but but it's neat. Now, i think we've got to have Trippier and Byrne.
00:16:51
Kev
Yeah.
00:16:55
Kev
and yeah
00:16:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
But the nice thing is that from what and what we hear, he's trained today, Byrne might do an hour and we'll get some Lewis Hall for 20 minutes, something like that.
00:17:03
Kev
Back on the bench.
00:17:08
Kev
He might be back.
00:17:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bring Lewis Hall back in.
00:17:09
Kev
That could be a massive boost.
00:17:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, it would. It would because it'll push Dan Byrne back into bit more competition and a more ability to rotate at the centre-half position because, let's face it, Dan Byrne is the current England centre-back.
00:17:18
Kev
Yep.
00:17:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, you know, he's um he must be able to step in and give Botman and or Chow and or Shah a night off.
00:17:27
Kev
and Yeah, Ben Burn. That'd be Burn Chow. Imagine Botman and Chow both on the bench. Wow, the strength and depth for 10 to half in a minute.
00:17:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's fabulous. It's fabulous. So you think Tonali, Bruno and Joe Linton at midfield?
00:17:43
Kev
I do, but there's something this which has Miley. ah Miley's been rested, hasn't he? Miley was rested in the cup game. So, he could have played Miley, Tenard and Ramsey and had Willock off the bench, but
00:17:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely. I think my...
00:17:56
Kev
he's he's rested Miley and Miley's been, Miley's come in and done really well. I think, you know what, I'm going to go out on a limb and I'm going to say Miley, Bruno and Joe.
00:18:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, and Tonali?
00:18:10
Kev
I think Tenari will be rested then come back in for the, think it's a balancing act. I think he'll come in for Bilbao. And I think Miley, I think Howe will trust Miley to have enough and he's done well enough to kind of hold his place for now to get past West Ham.
00:18:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right.
00:18:26
Kev
And then you've got, almost a fully fresh Tonali for the home Champions League game, where he might bring someone like Ramsey back in and play Tonali, Bruno and Ramsey. And they then give Joe Linton a rest. So I think it'll be a mixing match across these kind of two matches coming up. So I'm going to put my neck on the line and probably get it completely wrong.
00:18:46
Kev
I'm going to go Miley, Bruno and Joe.
00:18:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, I would have thought yes to Miley, but I would have him coming in for Joe Linton because Joe Linton just came back against Tottenham, didn't he?
00:18:55
Kev
Ooh.
00:19:01
Kev
He played the game before, didn't he? played against Fulham.
00:19:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Did he start against Fulham?
00:19:05
Kev
Yeah, he did. It was Miley, Bruno and Joe against Fulham because Tonali had illness.
00:19:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
was it just
00:19:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
All right.
00:19:10
Kev
So...
00:19:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay. Okay. I don't know then. I like may i like the sign of Miley in, but I would put him in for Joel Linton because I think he quite likes Miley covering for Tonali and Tonali pushed further forward because that that is that's a real weapon up there, isn't it?
00:19:22
Kev
Yeah.
00:19:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the forward line, Volta Mada at centre forward or is this a game that Osula could start?
00:19:33
Kev
No, Valtemar all day long. fact, Valtemar came off. I think the subs were ready to go from 65, but we didn't get on until closer to the 70 mark. think once Valtemar got that goal and we looked relatively comfortable, how was desperate to get him off just to keep him fit.
00:19:46
Kev
So I think Valtemar threw a middle and I actually think wings, you know, Murphy and Gordon. I think Barnes has done very well, but Gordon is on fire at the minute. He's he's done so well in his last couple of games.
00:19:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:59
Kev
It's going to take some dislodge from him.
00:19:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Definitely Gordon. Definitely Gordon down the left. But I'm thinking Alanga.
00:20:07
Kev
Murphy. Murphy got an assist in his last game. That would take some... That would that would be that would be brutal to drop Murphy.
00:20:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
But Murphy...
00:20:13
Kev
He got the first assist.
00:20:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
No. Murphy's letting Alanga try and get some form and confidence against the team in second bottom in the league. that's never so He's only scored one goal at home all season. and And Murphy will be told that he's start he's got a start against Athletic Bilbao.
00:20:26
Kev
Oh, what an awful start.
00:20:31
Kev
Yeah, maybe.
00:20:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's what I think.
00:20:32
Kev
Maybe. Maybe.
00:20:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Gordon ah goron and Alanga. Although I was having a little bit of a dream about Volta Marder being the third midfielder. Gordon down the middle and Barnes and Alanga.
00:20:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Can you imagine how fast that was? If you want to destroy West Ham.
00:20:47
Kev
Counter-attack. 4-2-3-1 with Volta Marder 10.
00:20:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
War. Aye. War. Yes, come on.
00:20:53
Kev
That would...
00:20:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Think about that.
00:20:54
Kev
oh Jesus Christ.
00:20:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Eddie won't do that. Eddie will not do that. Anyway, look, that's our... So we've got Pope. Trippier. Chow. Botman.
00:21:03
Kev
Burn.
00:21:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Byrne.
00:21:05
Kev
I've got...
00:21:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bruno.
00:21:06
Kev
Yeah.
00:21:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Miley. Joe Linton.
00:21:07
Kev
Yeah.
00:21:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'll go with that. And then I'm going to Alanga. Walter Marder and Gordon. And I'm having a langer because I'm letting you have Miley.
00:21:16
Kev
Murphy.
00:21:20
Kev
Yeah, okay, okay. That's how we're predicted together. But if anybody asks, I know Murphy's playing.
00:21:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I've predicted together.
00:21:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fair enough. Anyway, Kev, you're going to have to start working for your money. You're going to give us the Zencastr advert.
00:21:33
Kev
Old school Zencaster as well, because I'm not up to date.
00:21:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
All right. A blast from the past. It's like walking around a museum, this.
00:21:40
Kev
Oh, yeah. Do you have a story to tell that a world needs to hear? Have you struggled reaching new audiences who are engaged with your story? It might be time for you to start a podcast. And let me tell you about a platform we use here at the Global Sports Podcast Network.
00:21:53
Kev
Zencaster makes it easy to start a high-quality podcast built for growth from day one. 4K video recording from your phone. AI editing that automatically removes ums, ahs, yinahs. And 22 other speech patterns, Zencastr makes it super easy to start a podcast, which sounds great.
00:22:09
Kev
If you're ready to tell your story, check out the link in the show description to learn more about Zencastr.
00:22:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Excellent. Apart from, we ought to learn to pronounce it Zencaster now, Kevin.
00:22:21
Kev
Zencastr. And you know, it's not you, NARVs.
00:22:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's what, that's what, uh, Jesse's been trying to train us to do over the last few weeks.
00:22:28
Kev
Hmm.
00:22:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway, thank you for that.

Creating a Combined Newcastle-West Ham Team

00:22:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
In the part three, we had scheduled a combined 11 for Newcastle and West Ham. Well, let's be honest. It's whoever the first 11 is that Newcastle puts out is the combined 11.
00:22:40
Kev
yep
00:22:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Maybe, maybe Bowen. But then. Would you do, would you bother doing that? Bowen will have no one to talk to in the dressing room. He's the only man in the team.
00:22:48
Kev
yeah Bowen might get in on the right wing, but I mean, Murphy has probably out-contributed him last season, so Murphy ahead of Bowen, that would be controversial, but let's be honest, not many West Ham players are getting in.
00:22:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's probably true. Probably true. So we thought we would have a little bit of ah of a little bit of a more equal selection.
00:23:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we were going to try and, off the top of our heads, do West Ham, Newcastle, combined 11 from the whole of the Premier League.
00:23:15
Kev
Premier League
00:23:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's from 1991. 1992 even. Well, after 1991. Come so ninety ninety two even well after ninety ninety one that's come on You know what I mean. um
00:23:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Who's in goal, Kev? Who do you think's in goal? Who would you pick?
00:23:32
Kev
I mean I've got to go Shea Given absolute idol Shea Given goalkeeper
00:23:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Has to be.
00:23:38
Kev
Trying to think of West Ham keepers. from like Rob Green had a good spell there. David James. But again, nowhere near. um Nowhere near.
00:23:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Chesney. Chesney was there.
00:23:48
Kev
Yeah, and nothing. Shea Given. Shea Given's one of the best goalkeepers to ever play in the Premiers.
00:23:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
i agree.
00:23:53
Kev
He's in the top 10 comfortably.
00:23:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:54
Kev
So, yeah, Given for me.
00:23:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, so what are we going to do? 4-4-2?
00:24:00
Kev
Yeah, got to go old school. That's Premier League, isn't it?
00:24:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
an old school traditional 4-4-2?
00:24:02
Kev
4-4-2.
00:24:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
So a right back?
00:24:07
Kev
oh
00:24:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's just going to be... Who have we got? Who are your West Ham right backs? And I'll try and think of some good Newcastle ones because there have been some good Newcastle ones.
00:24:14
Kev
ah the did Did Lucas Neal play? but I'm trying to think of West Ham. Oh, Glenn Johnson played for West Ham. Did he have a spell there?
00:24:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes?
00:24:22
Kev
um
00:24:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Was he on the right side or the left side though?
00:24:26
Kev
Glenn Johnson was on the right, I think. Glenn Johnson was very good.
00:24:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay.
00:24:29
Kev
But it's got to be trippier.
00:24:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was.
00:24:31
Kev
and I know it sounds stupid, with but it's got to be trippier.
00:24:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
was thinking trippy as well.
00:24:35
Kev
I think West Ham, west arm as we get towards, I think West Ham, as we get towards centre-half, centre-midfielders and strikers, I can think of a lot.
00:24:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, dear.
00:24:44
Kev
but right back, it's got to be Trippier Shuley. I mean, if we're wrong, we we've done no research, by the way, to anyone listening, so if we forget somebody, comment and absolutely hammer us.
00:24:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Trips. Okay.
00:24:53
Kev
um But Trippier Shuley, best right back.
00:24:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm a... absolutely
00:24:56
Kev
Hey, hammer.
00:24:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely hammer us. That was excellent, Kev. You dropped that one in. So, left-backs. I can go back further than the Premier League and think of some really good Billy Bonds, Julian Dix.
00:25:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, he might have been a right-back.
00:25:10
Kev
Julian Dix, think, was pregnant.
00:25:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
But you going have? Who's a left-back?
00:25:14
Kev
Well, I think our best ever left back is probably Jose Enrique. But I'm not a massive fan of him because he buggered off to Liverpool, didn't he?
00:25:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Amazing. ah He went to another one and went to Liverpool, yeah. and Has Lewis Hall done enough to be mentioned yet?
00:25:32
Kev
Oh, he's close. I don't know.
00:25:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
But this time... Oh, I've just thought right-back. Have I thought right-back for West Ham?
00:25:41
Kev
He was your right back.
00:25:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Juan Bissaka.
00:25:45
Kev
Very good. Not Trippier level though. Not for me.
00:25:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we could put Juan Bissaka on the right-back and have Trippier play on left-back.
00:25:55
Kev
Yeah. I'm happy to do that. What other right back have we had?
00:25:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it should be to
00:25:59
Kev
We've had Aaron Hughes.
00:26:03
Kev
ah We've had Griffin. We've had Stephen Carr who was hopeless for Newcastle.
00:26:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
a... Yeah, we had...
00:26:08
Kev
Yeah, I would happily go Wambetaka and then Trippier left.
00:26:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
to done Danny Simpson.
00:26:14
Kev
Danny Simpson, probably not better than Mambas, I guess, so yeah.
00:26:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
No. Right, West Ham, I've got one in. Right, centre-halves though. Oh, this is a toughie, this, isn't it?
00:26:23
Kev
Rio Ferdinand.
00:26:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Rio's got to be in. He is a
00:26:28
Kev
Rio for West Ham.
00:26:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Legend. A legend and an icon. um
00:26:32
Kev
Woodgate. Has to be Woodgate, right? Best centre-half ever seen this in James' Park.
00:26:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's true.
00:26:40
Kev
Went to Real Madrid. You don't get a move to Real Madrid after only playing about
00:26:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:26:44
Kev
six months um unless you're an unbelievable player was fantastic at Leeds so we we bring back the Leeds we bring back the Leeds centre half pairing of Woodgate and Ferdinand we've played together before
00:26:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right. Woodgate. Well, let's do that. Woodgate and Ferdinand.
00:26:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, that makes sense. makes sense. So, what are we going to do? Two midfielders. One, an attacking midfielder and a defensive midfielder.
00:27:06
Kev
see again West Ham have had some good ones like Carrick Michael Carrick good player Frank Lampard
00:27:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
me to what Yeah, they've not had anything. He's not Tonali. Lampard attacking midfielder. I'll give you that.
00:27:18
Kev
Oh, we've had some belters, though, mate. But you're right, as a centre, I was going to say Ben Harper, but centre midfield. I mean, Declan Rice, does I mean, I don't really rate Rice in terms of England, but know lot of people do.
00:27:31
Kev
um
00:27:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's not as good as Tonali.
00:27:34
Kev
I agree. So, Tonali and Lampard.
00:27:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, I'm going Tonali and Lampard in midfield. So, we'll have to put our attacking midfielder stroke wingers. ah Ben Arfair.
00:27:46
Kev
ah
00:27:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Was he left?
00:27:47
Kev
Oh, Ben Arthur one Joe Cole.
00:27:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
good and um
00:27:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah
00:27:49
Kev
Joe Cole for West Ham.
00:27:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
was he left
00:27:52
Kev
Joe Cole.
00:27:54
Kev
He can play on the left or right, yeah. You could have Cole one wing and Ben Arthur on the other. Do we bring Robert? Does Ginola get a game?
00:28:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ginola gets a game. Come on. Iconic.
00:28:05
Kev
so So Ginola left because he can't play right and then Cole on the right.
00:28:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Again.
00:28:11
Kev
Cole can play either. Cole can play right wing or left wing. He's so talented, Joe Cole.
00:28:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think there's better right there' better rightw wings than that. Come on. Have a think.
00:28:17
Kev
Do you think so?
00:28:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think book i think Bowen would would be the head of Joe Cole.
00:28:21
Kev
Ah, Joe Cole's better than Bowen. As in a complete footballer. Joe Cole was, maybe not for West Ham, but what Joe Cole went on to do.
00:28:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know, but he's not a right winger. don't care if that's the thing.
00:28:32
Kev
Cole could play a right wing. He was like an attacker midfielder, winger, either side. He played right wing for Chelsea quite a bit, under 10.
00:28:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Did he?
00:28:42
Kev
Yeah, yeah.
00:28:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
I remember him. He's number 10.
00:28:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
I remember him scoring a fantastic volley against Sweden in the World Cup.
00:28:44
Kev
He played left wing for England.
00:28:49
Kev
Oh, yeah. Great strike.
00:28:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
That was superb.
00:28:50
Kev
Great strike.
00:28:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right. Yeah, I can remember saying joke all to my mum and she thought...
00:28:56
Kev
Oh, hang on. kind
00:28:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah,
00:28:58
Kev
I mean, he's not a winger, but could De Canio play on a wing? I know he's ex-MACA manager, but in terms of an actual player, Paolo De Canio was a baller.
00:29:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
man, he's... Well, because he's an ex-macham manager, he's automatically disqualified.
00:29:09
Kev
Doesn't get in. Doesn't get in.
00:29:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
So when I was talking to my man many years ago about joke hole, she got really cross because she thought I'd said joke hole and I was trying to make some sort of rude joke.
00:29:25
Kev
Amazing.
00:29:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's what happened. i've been this I've been misunderstood my whole life.
00:29:27
Kev
You know what?
00:29:29
Kev
I've got a similar stupid story about that. I was on holiday when my family went joke in here, got the job, and we were all laughing stock at the time with the Mike Ashley, and asked said, oh, very funny, lads, joke in here. they were like, Kevin, that's brilliant, but no, there's an actual manager called joke in here.
00:29:44
Kev
but was like, shut up, man, joke in here, get away. I didn't believe it until I actually saw that it was newspapers back then. So i actually saw a newspaper the newspaper next day with joke in here, and I was like,
00:29:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:29:55
Kev
Oh my God, it wasn't actually a joke. It was joking here.
00:29:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, I'm old enough to remember joking here when he was managing Wimbledon and he was he was just as outspoken then.
00:30:02
Kev
Yeah.
00:30:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Johan Kebab. Oh, my God. It just takes it on you.
00:30:08
Kev
Oh, you want to buy?
00:30:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
What? What's he on?
00:30:10
Kev
He's got to in this team, hasn't he? Could I get ahead at Lampard? No, could I ahead Lampard?
00:30:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Does Kebab not get ahead of Joe Cole? Play it down the right.
00:30:19
Kev
I would do that just because love could I. But Joel Cole was so good. Let's be honest.
00:30:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, we need a first sub, don't we?
00:30:26
Kev
Joel Cole at one point was...
00:30:29
Kev
Kibai can be the first sub.
00:30:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Kebab can be the first sub. ah sitting alongside Ben Arthur and Laurent Robert. And up front, I think Alan Shearer's got to play up for front.
00:30:37
Kev
Oh.
00:30:40
Kev
She-Ra.
00:30:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
it I think it's got to be Shearer and Ferdinand. Have West Ham had anyone up there any better than that?
00:30:45
Kev
Oh.
00:30:48
Kev
They've had good strikers. I mean, Carlos Tevez was excellent, but not on that level. um Again, i like Dean Ashton. He was good, but nowhere near that level. Jermaine Defoe was good, but not on the level of Ferdinand and Shearer.
00:31:01
Kev
Andy Cole not getting.
00:31:05
Kev
Cole and Shearer, never seen before.
00:31:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
I wouldn't mind Cole and Shearer. And I mean, oh, Lesley, he was only there two years, wasn't he?
00:31:14
Kev
Yeah, Cole's got the best goals per minute ratio in a Newcastle shirt out of everybody.
00:31:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Duncan Ferguson, bloody hell.
00:31:20
Kev
So, feel like he's got... know what we should have done, Ian, in hindsight, which we should do next time when we play West Ham at home towards end of the season, is players who have played for both. So, Andy Carroll would be up top with Callum Wilson.
00:31:33
Kev
Pfft!
00:31:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, yes, that's good.
00:31:36
Kev
Players who have played for both.
00:31:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's very good. I'm struggling now though.
00:31:40
Kev
Nobby Solano? Nobby Solano have a spell at West Ham? Or is that Villa?
00:31:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah youre they're You're thinking of Aston Villa just because they're playing the same shirts, Kev.
00:31:46
Kev
Can we play Marlon Hairwood?
00:31:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, who've we got then?
00:31:49
Kev
He played football.
00:31:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Who've we got? We've got Shea Given, Wan-Bissaka, Rio Ferdinand, Jonathan Woodgate, Kieran Trippier.
00:31:52
Kev
Yep.
00:31:58
Kev
Good defence, that.
00:31:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've got Tonali with Lampard attacking the number 10 role.
00:32:02
Kev
Unbelievable.
00:32:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Joe Cole, somehow gets in ahead of Johan Kapai on the right. And Ginole, David Ginole.
00:32:09
Kev
David Ginola.
00:32:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
David Ginole would have to play on the left wing if it was Shearer and Andy Cole up front.
00:32:15
Kev
Yep.
00:32:18
Kev
And Trippi is getting no help. Trippi is getting zero help at left back because Janola's not running back in his own half.
00:32:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's all right. Well, if you remember playing for England, Trippi and Nevergum went up and an attack anyway. with That sort of like put the whole...
00:32:31
Kev
Janola left back, he didn't.
00:32:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're just... halved the amount of attacking options England had for the whole of that World Cup campaign.
00:32:37
Kev
I think there'll be people shouting at us before we wrap it up with Tino de Fermento doesn't get ahead of Wan-Bissaka.
00:32:42
Kev
And we've got a point. ah But we've got to get West Ham players in
00:32:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah yeah On the right wing, on the right wing though, but I think Tino's reputation, when Tino played right when pettino played right back, it was touch and go whether it was him or Trippier.
00:32:52
Kev
Tino's great at the left-back.
00:32:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's only when he's gone and played on the left side that he really has elevated himself.
00:33:02
Kev
I agree.
00:33:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
So...
00:33:05
Kev
So we'll go Trippi right-back and Tino left-back.
00:33:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, I think we've got to keep Wamba Saka in. Otherwise, the West Ham people who are listening will say, this isn't a combined XI. They just and talked talked about some of our good players and then missed them out.
00:33:16
Kev
Yeah.
00:33:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Which, of course, is what we want to do because we're Newcastle fans.
00:33:24
Kev
Yeah.
00:33:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's have a quick prediction. I'm going 3-1, of course.
00:33:28
Kev
Yeah.
00:33:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
But i but i'm I'm starting to not want to pick the opposition to score because we have so many clean sheets these days.
00:33:36
Kev
Good point.
