Preview of Carabao Cup Game Against Tottenham

00:00:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Newcastle. My name is Ian Mackay. I'm here solo tonight, unfortunately. Best laid plans of mice and men, etc.
00:00:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean that I'm here on my own to preview tomorrow's Carabao Cup game at home to Tottenham. Now, Newcastle are looking for their third home win in the last eight days, which It's getting back to the sort of Eddie Howell runs that we yeah all hope and pray we can get into sooner rather than later.
00:00:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's the Carabao Cup match. The prize, a place in the quarterfinals, a place where we've been for each of the last three seasons. And of course, which we've got through to the final from in two of those last three seasons.
00:01:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Winners! We're defending our title! So I'm expecting a massive, massive crowd, lots and lots of atmosphere under the lights tomorrow night.
00:01:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they have tickets, so I will be there. Oh, can't wait.

Newcastle's Recent Performances and Player Updates

00:01:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm certainly hoping that it's going to be more of a Benfica type performance than the performance against Fulham on Saturday, which importantly, we did step it up in the last 20 minutes after the substitutions and came off with a win there.
00:01:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But it was wasn't very inspiring for the first hour. We started great and then just had about 45 minutes off either side of half-time and Fulham equalised and could have taken the lead.
00:01:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
But hey, forget that. That game's done. We got the points. and That was never going to be a big atmospheric game, I don't think. Whereas this one should be against Tottenham.
00:01:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, injury updates from Eddie Howe in today's press conference. Not really any update. I mean, there was. Botman obviously went off against Fulham with a bad knock to the head, failing to defend the goal from Lukic.
00:02:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
But apparently that is just a nasty cut, which got stapled together. Very graphic. And no concussion. So available if selected to play tomorrow night.
00:02:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've got an update on the walking wounded that we have, all of which seem fairly positive. Lewis Hall is fairly close and today, tomorrow, sorry, will just be a little bit too soon for him.
00:02:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think we might see him on the bench at West Ham on Sunday, which would be fabulous. The sooner he can get back in the first team, the better, because we need to move Dan Byrne away from left back. oh He's a great player. We love him and he puts everything into it, but he ain't a left back.
00:03:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
And different games we've seen him completely exposed. We definitely miss the marauding runs forward of Lewis Hall indeed, Tino Livramento, who is also coming back from injury um and is on target, I think, to finish his recovery over the international break coming up.
00:03:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
um He's targeting the Manchester City game at home, which would be ah quite a nice one to have extra reinforcements in there as well. Jan Wisser, our, apparently our centre forward, who hasn't trained with the team yet.
00:03:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
That might not be true now, and because he might already be training. He's on the grass, and and i think he is training, because he's sort of kind of in a halfway house.
00:03:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
They were hoping to get him back for this West Ham game coming up. That's probably a little bit too soon. and
00:03:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Probably Athletic Bilbao, or possibly Brentford away, and it would be quite fitting if he made his debut away at Brentford, because that obviously is where he came from.
00:04:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
So good news in terms of the longer term injuries, they all seem to be approaching. um And Bottman, Bottman had a sore head, but he's a quick healer. and
00:04:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think gives Eddie at least the same number of people to choose from.

Thomas Frank's Impact on Tottenham

00:04:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll have a go in part two of picking the team to start against Tottenham. Tottenham. Tottenham. Not the same Tottenham that lost 22 times in the Premier League last year under Ange Postacoglu.
00:04:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
They made a change in the summer. Thomas Frank, formerly of Brentford, was appointed manager. And it looks like he is far more pragmatic, if that's the right word, than Postacoglu was. Tottenham seem to be very methodical side, quite tight at the back.
00:05:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Both Danzo, who's come in for the injured Romero, and Van der Venne looking pretty secure. Looking quite threatening at the other end as well. and
00:05:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
They have the best away record in the Premier League. They have won four times and drawn in their five away games of the Premier League.
00:05:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
And of course, Thomas Frank, though, is new, but not new to Eddie. And Thomas Frank, when he brought Brentford to Newcastle, doesn't have a fantastic record there.
00:05:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
I do remember a three-all draw. Was that in Eddie's first ever game? So since then, don't think Brentford have avoided defeat We certainly beat them in the Caravan Cup
00:05:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
last year when Thomas Frank brought Brentford up, beat them 3-1. That was a good performance. So I don't think we should be too worried about Thomas Frank out-tacticking Eddie Howe.
00:06:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
But he has obviously got a much stronger and deeper score at Tottenham to choose from. When it comes to picking a team to play at St James' Park.

Tottenham's Strategy and Lineup Speculation

00:06:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Some of them may be a little bit shell-shocked. Because they might have appeared in those 4-0 defeat.
00:06:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the 6-1 defeat in the last few years. and So injury-wise, Tottenham im still missing.
00:06:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Dominic Solanke. And Christian Romero at centre-half. Damso, as I said, has been a fantastic substitute. Andrew Dogie. at full back but they've got some great backups.
00:06:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Jed Spencer's made it into England having played backup for a doggie I think. and Pedro Porro on the other side always seems to put in a good performance at St James's Park although quite prone to where some awful back passes.
00:07:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hopefully we can we can have a few more of those please Pedro. and Now, they made it quite a few signings in the summer, so it's not going to be the same team, the same members as they had last year. Kudus from West Ham, I think, was a fantastic buy.
00:07:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's very good. and And he's hit the ground running. He seems very good there, but he needs more help, I think, with Slanky out. He's got a lot of responsibility on him. What do you call him?
00:07:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Brennan Johnson on the other side is always solid. They've got Xavi Simmonds who came in, who has flattered to deceive a little bit, I think. He needs to adjust a bit more, but there's obviously quality there, although we've not seen it for the whole of a game before.
00:07:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So Tottenham, I think, will will be able to put a good, strong team out, although they are facing the same prospect as we are, which is 60 games this season, going strong in the Carabao Cup.
00:08:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're in the Champions League as well. They're in the Premier League. They're third in the Premier League So I think they'll be doing some rotation. and And I'm not going to try and guess who Tottenham might play.
00:08:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
and i know who they will play is Vicario, probably, who I've been very impressed with some of the saves that he made. He was very good against Everton when Tottenham won 3-0 at the new Hill Dickinson Stadium on the weekend.
00:08:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
think that score for Lange flattered them a little bit. But the nil certainly didn't flatter Vicario. It didn't look like anything was going to get past him. Hopefully he can throw one or two into the net for us tomorrow night.
00:08:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
A bit all of that though, what has to be noted, because we have to be wary of it, Brentford's best signing of the summer may well have been ah chap who came from, sorry, Tottenham's best signing of the summer, may well have been a chap who they signed from Brentford, along with Thomas Frank, called
00:09:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Andreas Georgesen, who is the set piece coach. Now, Damso, who's playing instead of Romero, won the pre-season long throw competition.
00:09:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
So he can chuck that right into the mix. And Van de Ven seems to have rediscovered or rebo rebirthed himself as a bit of a killer getting onto to the end of these set pieces.
00:09:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
and He scored two goals against Everton. um He is a big, strong lad. He should be getting on the end of some of these things. um
00:09:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Tottenham have already scored five goals from set pieces in their first nine games in the Premier League, and they only scored 11 the whole of last season. So when Ange thought that set set pieces were...
00:10:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
just detail and not bothering worth working anything out for. It's the other way around now at Tottenham. They've got a set piece coach, a successful set piece coach who's already converting that planning into a goal threat.
00:10:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that is something that I think we have to be very wary of, which all filled us into who's Eddie Howe going to pick. And once you've heard from Ken, we'll have a go at picking the team, see how close we get.
00:11:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we're back for part two. And this is going to turn into a very regular little game that we're going to play, I think. um With 60 games plus maybe to play this year, if we can keep going deep into the cup competitions.
00:11:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's important, very important, that we do enough rotation to avoid injury and to be as fresh as possible when we're playing these games. Now, I think Newcastle looked a little bit tired.
00:11:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
um against Fulham they looked a little bit tired when they went down and played at Brighton as well although strangely whereas they normally start very very fast and tail off they appear to be getting stronger as the match wears on in recent weeks can't explain that but I do think that there will be some rotation and We did see the rather unfortunate Fabian Shah come on and play for the last half an hour against Fulham. andm I'm saying unfortunate because he lost his place in the team without without playing badly.
00:12:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
His last game was against Wolves, and I thought he really well against that man mountain that they had playing up front. But um he got subbed off with concussion.
00:12:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Chau took his place. Chau hasn't really put a foot wrong. So we did see Shah come back in. He still looked in great form. One or two of his trademark diagonals against Fulham. And, you know, he was the revamped, in the revamped Newcastle lineup that really stepped up in the last 20 minutes to actually win that game.
00:12:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Could have petered out to one old draw. Could have been like last year, which I sat through when Fulham scored the winner in the 80th minute and we lost at home. That couldn't have happened again. and so
00:13:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
No sign of Lewis Hall, of course, so I think we have Dan Byrne still playing left-back. In midfield, in midfield ah Joe Linton came in for Ramsey against Fulham, and he was he did all right.
00:13:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think that's a 50-50 toss-up split, though, with the rotation as to whether Joe Linton or Ramsey plays on the left. Personally, it's Tottenham. I've seen Joe Linton score a few goals against Tottenham,
00:13:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think he got his first goal when he's playing centre-forward away at Tottenham. I'd keep Joe Linton in. I think Tonali is a dead cert to come in and replace Lewis Miley.
00:13:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
No reflection on the Geordie Tonali's performances in the last couple of games. But Tonali seems to be over his nasty bug, or he is over his nasty bug, as he's been training all week.
00:14:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think he'll come in. And Captain Bruno has got to start as well, I think.
00:14:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
that's not to say that there won't be rotation later on. What I'd like to see is the sort of starts we had against Tottenham two years ago and three years ago where we can go two or three goals up by half-time and make some substitutions then and give everybody a nice rest before West Ham.
00:14:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Up front, yes, well, Barnes has been a wonderful substitute coming on, hasn't he? Scoring twice against Benfica. And then... coming on and helping to change the game against Fulham.
00:14:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Osula was the game changer when he came on, and even though it was just really a 15 minute cameo.
00:14:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Alanga, £55 million pound man, Alanga, surely too good to sit on the bench game after game after game. Nevertheless, I think how we'll start, Volta Marder through the middle.
00:15:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
with Gordon down the left and Murphy down the right. Murphy, so dependable, put some great balls in. um Obviously scored the first goal against Fulham with what we're looking for, a winger running through for a ball played through.
00:15:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah was Bruno who played that pass, but Valtemada can do that. um That's the prototype. That's what we need to do more of. but And he was through a second time from Gordon, wasn't he?
00:15:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
when when he should have an easier chance than what he scored but he managed to pick out Leno's big feet and and have it saved but put quite a few great crosses in as well so so
00:15:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
what's the team this is Ian's guess for what the team's going to be I think this is a match which happened against Bradford in the last round where Ramsdale comes in and has a game gives Nick Pope a night off and I think Trips is the best right-back choice we've got.
00:16:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
He can't play game after game after game after game, though. So, potentially, Emil Kraft might come in at right-back. I don't think he will, because I know Eddie doesn't like changing everything up.
00:16:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
My guess is that Bottman, with his sore head, will sit this one out, and Scha will start with Malik Chau. Malik Chau playing on the left-hand side, because that's where he switched to when Scha came on against Fulham.
00:16:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Dan Byrne at left back. Tonali in the number six year role with Gamarish on the right and Joe Linton on the left pushing forward. Volta Marder through the middle.
00:16:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Gordon and Murphy in their usual places. um So I make that Ramsdale, Shah and Tonali coming in to the team that beat Fulham.
00:17:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I've already listed coming on Off the bench. Miley for Tonali. Barnes for Gordon. Asula for Voltemada. Alanga for Murphy. And Kraft for Trippier.
00:17:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Or Trippier for Kraft. Whichever way that is. ah Probably at 60 minutes and then 75 minutes. Depending on what the score is. and And what a strong bench is. Thank goodness for that. The last time we were in the Champions League. roundabout this time. People started dropping like flies.
00:17:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Dan Byrne hurt his back. Jacob Murphy dislocated his shoulder. People were out for months and we really, really struggled going through December and January. um So far, we look like we've got players coming back for that those dates rather than dropping out.
00:17:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that's to be congratulated. and That's to be congratulated. The new, I've forgotten what his name is now, the new fitness guy, is it Bunce?
00:18:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
is to be congratulated if it is his monitoring that is helping us to avoid injuries. So that's my team. They don't care how Tottenham line up.
00:18:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hopefully they'll give Vicario the night off because I think he looks really good. um And they'll put, ah I don't know who their sub-goalkeeper is, but whoever he is, he can't be as good as Vicario has been playing.
00:18:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
and so I'm going to pause there. I'm going to pause there, switch across here and read you.

00:19:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Excuse me. So, I just thought I'd have a quick look what the prize is if we do knock Tottenham out.

Carabao Cup Opponents and Past Victories

00:19:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Maybe it shouldn't be.
00:19:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
But some of the other games being played tomorrow night include Arsenal at home to Brighton. Could Brighton take Arsenal out? I'm just looking for teams who I don't really want to have to play.
00:19:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Arsenal could knock Brighton out and then we'd go and play at Brighton and it would just be as be just as difficult with our bogey team, wouldn't it? and Liverpool at home to Palace. Oh, Palace could knock Liverpool out there. Liverpool having lost four games in the league.
00:19:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Falling behind in Frankfurt. um That would be good, wouldn't it? That would be good. And Chelsea ah playing away at Wolves. Chelsea, I think, are very brittle if they go behind.
00:19:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Wolves... I know everyone's got them written off, but I've seen the Wolves play a few times. I don't think they're anywhere near as bad as the results that they're getting. So come on, Wolves, do us favour.
00:20:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
City are at Swansea. I think that means City will be there in the quarterfinals. But one or two games being played tonight that hadn't finished when um I started recording.
00:20:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
so But they have now. ah Brentford have hammered Grimsby. So Brentford are through to the quarterfinals. The Wickham and Fulham game has ended level, so it's a penalty shootout.
00:20:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Come on, Wickham. Knock Fulham out. And in the last game, the Welsh derby, Wrexham are losing at home to Cardiff, but there's still six minutes to go.
00:20:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
be honest, either of the winners of if either team win on that, that would be somebody I'd be happy to get in the quarterfinal. And I say that as a young man having seen Wrexham knock Newcastle out of the FA Cup 4-0.
00:21:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
That was awful.
00:21:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway, last year against Tottenham, we won twice. We won twice. First at St James' Park and then away at Tottenham.
00:21:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm trying to remember either of those games.
00:21:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're not as rememberable not as memorable as the previous two times that we played Tottenham at St. James's Park, which was a 4-0 win and that wonderful 6-1 win. Oh, that was marvellous. If we can start again like that, where we're three up after 10 minutes, I'll take that.
00:21:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Two more from Murphy, one from Joe Linton. That'll suit me down to the ground. However, there's been a little bit of a question about our atmosphere because the game against Fulham was rather flat.
00:21:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think we are more likely to get under the lights on a Wednesday, defending our Carabao Cup title, a really good atmosphere. um And that's what we need. We need the crowd well up for it. We need to scare some of these.
00:22:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Shaffi Simmons has never seen what the but the St. James' crowd is like on on a Wednesday night. um So yeah, let's get let's get into them and let's terrorise them a bit. Let's give Van der Ven nightmares of that match where he ended up on his backside twice in 10 minutes as first Gordon, then Isaac scored.
00:22:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. So we want to benefit a Benfica performance. We don't really want a Fulham performance. And I don't think the crowd will allow us to have a Fulham performance.
00:22:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. I don't think the opposition will either. Nobody would be underestimating Tottenham.

Predictions and Fan Interaction

00:22:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
What score are we going for though?
00:22:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you know what? Having won 2-1 twice last year but with a history of scoring a few more goals than that and and looking now quite dangerous when we get up for it I'm going to go for the old fashioned Ian 3-1 Newcastle to win 3-1 I will not at all be surprised if the pragmatic Tottenham can conjure a shutout and van der Veen heads a damsel throw in in for a 1-0 Tottenham win.
00:23:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nor will I be surprised if the game ends up level because I think these are two evenly matched sides. If it's a draw and goes to a penalty shootout, then anything could happen.
00:23:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
and I don't want it to be a draw with a penalty shootout because, let's face it, Newcastle's an hour and a half away from where I live. Doesn't start till 8 o'clock.
00:23:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
And if we're not getting out of St James, isn't into the car till quarter to 11. It's going to be a very, very late one when I get home. Anyway, Newcastle to win 3-1, I think. and I'm going for Palace to knock Liverpool out and Wolves to knock Chelsea out.
00:24:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Newcastle to draw the winners of Wrexham against Cardiff in the quarterfinal. That would be lovely, wouldn't it? Thanks very much for listening. I know it's just me, but if you disagree with me, give us a ah message down below.
00:24:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
you're watching on YouTube, like and subscribe. If you're thinking, that poor lad has to do all of these on his own all the time. I'm more than happy for him to volunteer to come and join us.
00:24:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'd love more people to talk Newcastle. and You don't have to live within an hour's drive of St. James' Park. You just have to be a fan. and Come through to us on the messages. That would be great.
00:24:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll see you all very, very soon. Someone is meant to do match reaction tomorrow night. And I think it's down to me, although I'm at the match and I've already said how late it's going to be.
00:25:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I will try and record a match reaction as early as possible on Thursday morning so that it will come A little bit later than normal, but hopefully not too late.
00:25:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
We shall see you then. Bye-bye now.
