00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to your daily women's football beyond the pitch episode. I'm Georgie, your host today and I'll be joined by the lovely Paige.
00:00:18
Paige
Hello, hello.
00:00:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hi Paige.
00:00:20
Paige
yeah
00:00:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Today we'll be discussing some lovely, some glorious, some happy WSL baby news um and we'll be touching upon the overall inclusivity in the women's game, the possible introduction of the WSLB teams into lower leagues and the effects this could have on the growth of the game, whether that's positive or negative. um Who knows, really? let's Let's chat about it.

WSL Weekend Highlights and Inclusive Celebrations

00:00:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
First and foremost, were we're just coming off the back of a super fun WSL weekend as always. um And within that, Lotta Wobbenmoy got a a rare but not unexpected goal. um I think she got ah got a black eye out of it as well. It was pretty, pretty hardcore, just cluttered her way through Kiara Keating. But anyway, more importantly, a goal celebration. um So hey, if we're on YouTube now, thank you. The Gunners sign she made for, to British Sign Language signed for Gunners as she sprinted away into the distance. What do we think about this? um In general, what is it? Is this, I mean, it can only be, I was going to ask, is it positive? It can only be positive for the game. ah What a stupid thing to say, but I think it's great. I think it's great that she's, she's always one to sort of stand out and bits factors bits fitting piece of a tee. What do we think, Paige?
00:01:39
Paige
Yeah I think well first of all I think obviously she's celebrating possibly like a massive goal right against you know big club like Man City so it's great for obviously Arsenal fans and congratulations to them.
00:01:55
Paige
um but I think yeah the celebration uh as a whole it's it's powerful isn't it it's like especially now that you know she's come out and actually explained what it means rather than people guessing or oh it's just a nod to like the badge like no it's like a lot more than that and I think just the inclusivity of it
00:02:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:02:14
Paige
um I think there's like been things done before with lionesses like with regards to like the um BSL where they had like the braille on the back of the shirts or something and like there's been loads of kind of little nods to the to the British Sign Language side of of things but I think to see it more visual in in these sort of celebrations is really it's really special and I think it still shows that there's like this massive connection between
00:02:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah.
00:02:39
Paige
um like players and fans, which I think is so important and Yeah, it was super powerful, super cute. And hopefully, as we see, you know, loads of people replicate big time players, you know, in the Premier League globally, you know, with their main

Impact of Inclusive Celebrations on Clubs

00:02:55
Paige
celebrations. Maybe this is something that you'll see kids up and down the country doing on ah on a Saturday, Sunday afternoon morning. That would be quite cool to see. But I just think, yeah, the impact is really is really special. And I'm sure for but those, you know, who've been affected by, you know, having people with hearing and impairments in their lives, like,
00:03:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:03:14
Paige
And they became made aware of it. I'm sure that they would feel like, you know, just like a type of feeling. I don't know. It's cute. It's cute. I like it.
00:03:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah. And it it doesn't hurt that it's a cool one, right? I mean, I'm not going to be, A, scoring any goals, but B, running away with a, with an arsenal of celebration anytime soon.
00:03:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it's a pretty cool one, but is it going to inspire, you know, other clubs?
00:03:31
Paige
yeah Yeah, it would be cool.
00:03:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
What's, what's the British Sign Language for their club like sign or motto or whatever it could be. And they can like run away and do it that way.
00:03:45
Paige
yeah it would be cool to sort of see a trend of of something like that even if it just opens the inclusivity sort of category again you know just see if you're also interested to see what it looks like for all of the different clubs because I mean Gunners that's quite like an easy cool kind of one um but I don't know you know for Brighton and Hove Albion are you able to walk away doing a a
00:03:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
That'd be pretty cool.
00:03:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.

Memorable Celebrations and Future Trends

00:04:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
During Seagull!
00:04:08
Paige
seagull or whatever you might get told off for that
00:04:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep.
00:04:12
Paige
you know it's been done in in the prem and I don't know I think it would be cool to know and just to see like more little touches like that um that just yeah really showcase that that special relationship that that players and and fans can have um obviously lot has already had like interactions before with the lionesses um I think she did like a like a little video with I think Izzy who was deaf and like she had her own opportunity to create her the the sort of celebration that she'd want doing for her and then Lotta did it in the Italy game where the little little shimmy of the of the hips and stuff.
00:04:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep.
00:04:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep.
00:04:53
Paige
So, you know, we've seen her do we've seen her do bits before like taking inspiration from from fans and stuff. And I think, yeah, it's really great to see.
00:05:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and I think it would be interesting, or just fun, you know, we've we've seen um iconic celebrations, like across the board in in women's football, you've got Ellen White's, I can never do it quick enough because my real sound effects will, Ellen White's goggles, we've got, a little has Ellen to stop doing it?
00:05:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
but She did did the heart thing, like, and it's like, yeah, okay, is this this is gonna pick up, right?
00:05:22
Paige
Yeah.
00:05:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Or are we gonna be seeing Ronaldo swap his, Thank you for some sudden sign language stuff. What do you think?
00:05:34
Paige
Ooh, I don't know about Ronaldo. does e Is he relevant anymore? I feel like I haven't heard people talk
00:05:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ooh, controversial.
00:05:40
Paige
Sorry, that's just that was the Liverpool girl in me then, ah yeah, and the vote messy. But um yeah, i let's let's be real, obviously the impact of men's football globally and and the celebrations, you can't, I'm pretty sure if you did go out on a Saturday and a Sunday morning, any grassroots club in the country, you've got numerous, probably more boy teams than girl teams celebrating just in the style of their,
00:06:09
Paige
their icons their male football icons and you know doing the cold palmer cold and the the ah well rushford might become a bit more relevant now that he's gone to to villa but you know all of these like mentality type ones and stuff like that i definitely think you'll see those but
00:06:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, maybe.
00:06:25
Paige
I don't know, we are we quite there yet for the translation of ah WSL celebrations into into women's football on the grassroots side? I don't know, but it would be nice to see, you know, I'd love to to know that in the future, you know, potentially my my future children are going to be doing, you know, a WSL players celebration as they go away after screaming a ah top corner worldy, but I think
00:06:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:06:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Go on, here's some some homework for you. Find out what the what the sign language for eagles is and score one on Sunday.
00:06:59
Paige
yeah yeah I got you I got you I got you okay I got you and miss I think it's gonna be uh it's gonna be interesting if we had a game actually I would do next time next time I got you I got you I got you I'll get the video footage to follow as well
00:07:00

podcast.
00:07:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
All right, after that studying ad read, we're back for part two. And some beautiful bouncing baby blue news here. We've got um Chelsea goalkeepers as Chira Musavich and her pregnancy announcement. um Chelsea women's social ah media people working overtime at the minute with all those signings and now a baby on top of it. But a fun one and one that you don't often see or hear in women's football still. um I mean, what does this mean for Chelsea and and their absolute rampage at the WSL at the minute? It can only be a good thing, right?
00:08:17
Paige
Yeah, I mean, yeah, Chelsea have certainly taken the, taken the dub in terms of signings, I think, for sure.
00:08:28
Paige
um But I think this one, yeah, it's special. I think that it was cute that it was done on on deadline day as well. I think like she found like it was some big, you know, big contract announcement and
00:08:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:08:42
Paige
You know, I don't know. When I was watching it, I was kind of thinking, I'm growing. I was like, oh, gosh.
00:08:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, what what do you mean?
00:08:50
Paige
Yeah. One step closer, ready to share happy news. I was like, Oh, I didn't know the family member. Oh, okay. Like it was, it was so cute.
00:08:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:09:01
Paige
And I think, um, it was just, yeah, I think they did like a, just like a really lovely, a lovely moment. Wasn't it? Rather than. Yeah, I don't know.
00:09:12
Paige
I just think timing wise probably it worked out like really well with it being deadline day and like the way that they could have set it off. I think it was it was really well done. um And yeah, it's it's great news.
00:09:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:09:24
Paige
It's great news for the women's game because I think that it just shows the change that you know we've seen over you know very recent years and the support, the sort of support that encompasses just natural things now, right?
00:09:40
Paige
And there's never now a question, well, I'll have to wait until I've retired or anything, you know, we've seen now so many players, especially like loads of the American girls have taken the time out that they need, you know, had their their one, two, three children and then made their way back to the game or not, but it's been on their terms as opposed to having been forced into doing, you know, or making some of these decisions.
00:09:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Definitely.
00:10:02
Paige
So. Yeah, it's definitely positive. I mean, I don't know if it's, I mean, it is positive for Chelsea, but also, you know, they're now going to be about their goalkeeper, but thankfully you've got obviously Hannah Hampton is is playing outstandingly well, so.
00:10:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, absolutely. I mean, yeah, they're not lacking in cover, are they?
00:10:20
Paige
No.
00:10:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think ah think they'll do just fine. And I think it's really important for someone as as high profile and, and you know, so still number one, still playing really well, playing for a top club in the WSL to to to i don't I was about to say come out, but that's not right.
00:10:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
like you know it's ah It's a proper announcement. It's a happy announcement. It's a proud announcement. It's not like, oh, where's she gone? And she shuffles back in 12 months time and you wonder where she's been.
00:10:48
Paige
Yeah.
00:10:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's like, you know this is what's happening. This is this is wonderful. And I think that's, yeah, it's really cute and I'm really pleased.
00:10:55
Paige
Yeah.
00:10:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
And she's only what, like 28 or something. So there's plenty of time to get back to it. Goalkeepers play until they're at least 65, I think. Isn't that the rule?
00:11:03
Paige
I mean, yeah you may as well, right?
00:11:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
when you
00:11:06
Paige
It's one of those kind of positions that I think once you're involved, you're kind of setting it for life. They tend to not get rid of you too quickly out in the at the squad. But no, it's definitely, it's a wholesome moment. And like I think, like you said, it's not something ah where they've just kind of like, you know,
00:11:22
Paige
done it little quietly, like, why should we be celebrating these things?
00:11:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:11:26
Paige
Again, you see, you know, we just spoke about football celebrations, like, I see, I swear, like, every single week, someone in the prem is, like, stuffing a ball up their jersey and running away with their thumb in their mouth.
00:11:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:11:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:11:38
Paige
Like, those celebrations of, i' you know, being pregnant, of having children, like, it's it's always been a part of the game, but I think within this game, it's never been something that is like, been fully celebrated as like, it should, it's like, it's obviously, it's an amazing thing, you know, recreation, exactly, et cetera, is like, you know, what we're all, I guess, here for, but also, you know, these guys are athletes.
00:11:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mhmm. Yeah.
00:12:05
Paige
Why, why shouldn't they be celebrated in the same way? And I think especially now that the women's game has come, you know, as come as far as it has, but I think, you know, still there's probably some distance to go.
00:12:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mhmm.
00:12:18
Paige
in a lot of potential aspects, but the celebration of it and the meaningfulness of these moments are yeah, it's up to you and I love what Chelsea did with it.
00:12:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. I think it's like, as you say, like the, with the, yeah, there's the amount of times like men's football, you read an article or something and you find out that, you know, Joe blogs, he plays for United has got five kids.
00:12:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's like, hang on, where'd they come from? When do they come from?
00:12:44
Paige
Yeah.
00:12:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
How old is he? He's like 15. This is mental. um And you just, you really just don't see it or hear about it when in football. And it's, I think it's because I guess, when you're at that top, top level, like any time away from your sport is a a risk to your starting place or like a risk to your fitness or like a risk to, we talked about like the level of, yeah, finances, absolutely.
00:13:03
Paige
You'll find out, please.
00:13:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, not even having having like a maternity policy or pay in and yeah, are you going to get your contract renewed? I mean, it is is big for Musavich. I mean, she's going to miss out on the I just miss out is is relative, right?
00:13:06
Paige
You're there.
00:13:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it's 20, 25 euros.
00:13:20
Paige
ah
00:13:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
So she's not going to be there, obviously, which is a big decision to make if you are your starting keeper for um for your country.
00:13:26
Paige
maybe opposed to a both
00:13:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
And where she was last time I checked. I haven't checked recently, but she's very, very good.
00:13:35
Paige
Yeah. Yeah.
00:13:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So yeah, it's just yeah, I think this is this is a huge step forward. You go girl.
00:13:43
Paige
Yeah, it's delicious to see. We love it.
00:13:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Delicious.

FA's Proposal for WSLB Teams in Lower Leagues: Benefits and Concerns

00:14:13
Paige
All right jumping into our third and final topic of the day and it's a little bit of a of an interesting one that I think could bring a lot of topic and spark for debate but yeah the FA are considering adding WSLB teams to the lower leagues so obviously the ultimate hope of this is
00:14:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yay!
00:14:34
Paige
that the proposal will increase competition and play a development. But there are loads of concerns that also come with that, but I'll highlight some bits of the proposal just as a start. So, B teams from WSL and Championship could play in the National Women's League. They could also play in tiers four to six, but are unable to be promoted higher than tier three.
00:14:56
Paige
the B teams would have to play in a league at least two tiers below their first team and the regional leagues in tiers three and four could be expanded to 14 teams per division and then a playoff system would then introduced to be introduced to sort of increase those numbers um of promoted and relegated teams.
00:15:17
Paige
So I know that there's obviously a lot of information to process there and I definitely encourage if you are interested in learning more about the proposal definitely take a look, you'll probably be able to find it on, um well, I know there's loads of different websites hosting it but there might be something written on the FA which I'd probably encourage first and foremost if you're able to find anything there but um Yeah, I think that there's a few concerns from my perspective with the regards to it and it and it mainly focuses around that disparity in funding between sort of top and bottom tier clubs. as ah As a player in a club myself that's considered probably the bottom of the tiers, the th thought of having WSL slash championship if they kind of went as far down as that B team's been brought into
00:16:05
Paige
my league and my environment within the grassroots game is quite a daunting prospect, I think. um Yeah.
00:16:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I would agree. Yeah, the word like daunting. It's like, look, what are you... On one hand, yeah, it's it's going to increase competitiveness for for the leagues in general. I think they're talking about expanding the size of the leagues as well to sort of accommodate these. And it's sort of like, okay, it's great for the development of the sport, of these leagues, of of those specific teams. But if you're trying to think about what are you playing football for, you're trying to think about the actual players that are going to be in these leagues,
00:16:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, some of them might be in these leagues because this is their level, they want to go up, they want to be with their team or to get promoted to the next level, or they might want to you know get signed to another team, get recognised or whatever, but they might just be like, right, this is this is the football I play, this is the level I play at, I want to go in and I want to enjoy it and I don't want to get battered 10-0 every time I step on a pitch on a Sunday.
00:17:05
Paige
Yeah.
00:17:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's also, it's going to surely, surely it's going to do nothing other than broaden the gap that already exists between those WSL teams and everyone else, right?
00:17:19
Paige
Yeah, potentially, there's so many different perspectives that you can have within the same perspective, I think. And I don't know, that's probably a confusing prospect to sort of think of, but like, yeah, you've obviously got that that major disparity between top and bottom and all the money that comes with the top and all the talent and then comes with the top because all of these top teams are training, you know, daily, at least three, four times a week at a minimum in most academies.
00:17:49
Paige
And then they're joining, you know, leagues where we literally get, it's called an hour of training in a week, but it's probably 45 minutes by the time you've got onto your hour slot, you've got everybody else from the previous session off, you've set up your practice, you've got warmed up, you've got, you know, touches on the ball, and now it's time to get off the pitch because the next team are wanting in.
00:17:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:18:10
Paige
And you know that that 45 minutes a week compared to you know three solid hours plus everything else that comes with that you know the fitness the
00:18:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:18:24
Paige
ah physiology that, you know, that the the impact of those types of things that are done from a very early age within a lot of these like WSL like Academy kind of setups. and It's just, yeah, it does strike me as quite, I obviously don't think that there's going to be many of these clubs coming in and playing like tier six, division three of the hots and beds league, let's be real, but ah
00:18:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm.
00:18:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, no. What do you mean?
00:18:50
Paige
Yeah, I would love to see some Arsenal players playing in my division. um I think there's a lot of positives to it. I think, yes, trying to you you know increase that competition and player a development by giving opportunities such as those.
00:19:08
Paige
Yes, but I just, I'm confused how how it really, really core works.
00:19:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm.
00:19:12
Paige
And I think potentially that's, you know, the proposal is a proposal. It goes to all of the clubs.
00:19:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:18
Paige
they They're able to obviously read and and pull it pull it apart a little bit and ask all the questions that they want.
00:19:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:24
Paige
And I would be interested to sort of circle back to this, you know, potentially in a few months time when maybe we've heard a bit more about it. And then obviously when we hear the feedback from the clubs that I'm sure that we'll be privy to even just a little bit um about their sort of thoughts and and what they but what they think could could come ah as a result of it in terms of their on pitch, off pitch development and the impact of the the pyramids as a whole.
00:19:53
Paige
ah Yeah, we'll see. I think it could be interesting, but I also think it needs to be done right.
00:19:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it it does. And I think, I don't know, I think maybe maybe I've just got a bit of a ah ah pessimistic view on it, because I suppose, yeah, if you're talking about the funding, that's going to come from the big clubs and right, it's going to move down to the other leagues. When has, when has trickle down economics ever worked in anything, especially football? And it's like, are we going to end up in a world where We've got a Chelsea B team sitting at the top of tier three for forever because they can't go up. They're not going to go down. If you've got the option to play for Chelsea B or you know like
00:20:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
not going to name a team to slag off, but your local rec, like it's not going to be your local rec in tier three, but you know what, you'rere you're probably going to choose Chelsea, right?
00:20:40
Paige
Yeah.
00:20:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
So then it's, yeah, it's it's not even the fault of these clubs that it's going to cause um disparity.
00:20:52
Paige
Yeah.
00:20:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's just and as a player, as someone who wants to get better in fitness or in their skills or in football, you're not going to choose Someone over Chelsea, surely.
00:21:07
Paige
yeah
00:21:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:21:08
Paige
I mean, potentially the hope there is that, you know, say say you end up playing for Chelsea B Team. and you impress enough in those divisions, maybe then the perspective is that, you know, then you make your way to Chelsea A team, but do you know what I mean?
00:21:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm. Yeah.
00:21:24
Paige
you've You've then sort of put in the work and they've been able to see you in a competitive environment because now these tier three, like ah this tier three division will be more competitive because you've got clubs that are, you know,
00:21:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm.
00:21:39

similar to the WSL teams or or our WSLB teams. So you can kind of make maybe that that step a little bit, a little bit easier. um But I still think obviously there's big question marks as to, you know, what if the WSL or team is relegated? What then happens to that B team if they are playing at the top of the tier that they're allowed to play because of the two tier gap?
00:22:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:22:06
Paige
What then happens to them if that WSL team gets relegated? Do they then get relegated?
00:22:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do they also want to get off the shuffle?
00:22:10
Paige
and Yeah, and that obviously messes up the entirety of the concept of player development because you've now you're now dropping to a lower tier when potentially you're the top of that tier consistently, but as a result of you know your your
00:22:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:22:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:22:32
Paige
18 counterpart you're now having to step down a level I don't know I guess we don't we don't really know what what that looks like in practice, but I think the conversation about
00:22:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:22:45
Paige
about development as a tier and as a pyramid as a whole is always positive. I've been saying it for the long time that disparity between top and bottom never mind bottom of the tier and top of that single tier like that is in itself is quite is quite wide I think so then even if you were to look at
00:22:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:23:08
Paige
that So, for instance, might my club plays in Division 2 of the Beds and Hearts League. If we went up against even an Eastern Region team, so that could be Lewton, that could be Real Bedford, like those kind of levels, like we would just get battered. like I know it. I know it. Even if we put on a full-strength team, just everything that came with it, I i genuinely don't think that we would be able to handle ourselves very well.
00:23:34
Paige
And that's at the lowest of the low. So then if you put in, you know, just a couple of tiers higher than that, say for for instance, you're loose in towns, we've already kind of seen when they've played, ah who did they play in the FA Cup?
00:23:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Stevenage?
00:23:49
Paige
Was it Brighton?
00:23:50
Paige
Did they?
00:23:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, oh right, okay, after that.
00:23:52
Paige
Yeah. um You know, obviously they put in a decent performance, I'm sure, but the score line said everything.
00:23:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:00
Paige
So,
00:24:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:01
Paige
That's okay. Yes. That's ah an A team in comparison to what we're talking about, but potentially could that you know be the same with what the B team looks like? I don't know. It's where they pull their players from. Is it all the academy players that are just going to get taken out and put into like B team format?
00:24:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:15
Paige
Is it going to be completely separate? They're going to have their academy system that that's going to push for the, that's going to push the first team, but then they've got some, you know, side contracts that are then part of their beat. I don't know.
00:24:25
Paige
I guess we don't know how it looks.
00:24:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:27
Paige
And I think that that side of things could be quite interesting and how it could land. generally would be interesting. And I think, yes, it's great that we're obviously talking about increasing competition and play development.
00:24:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:39
Paige
We've been begging for that for the longest time. The men's the men's tears have seemed to be able to do that. And I'm sure that that's taken a while and we're obviously so far behind. So I would love to see it.
00:24:49
Paige
And I'm just um I'm happy what it sounds like in principle, but in real life, in actual practice, I don't know.
00:24:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, apprehensive, but absolutely, I mean, expanding the leagues, expanding opportunities.
00:25:00
Paige
Yeah.
00:25:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. I never want to say it'll be a bad thing. I just feel very cautious about it for the for the rest of the lower leagues, but hey, we'll just have to see.
00:25:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's see what happens, eh?
00:25:13
Paige
But we will, we will.
