JT Spangler: On December 13th. Is it my imagination or did we arrive in a limo? Tom Cruise is sports agent Jerry Maguire. What can I do for you, Rod? What can I do for you? Show me the money.
JT Spangler: Congratulations, you're still my agent. Jerry Maguire, rated R, opens December 13th.
Jeff: Show me the money, Jerry.
JT Spangler: if
JT Spangler: Dude, I was... ah I love that part because I also remember the part. that Right after that, it was, I love black people!
Jeff: And he is. Straight screaming. Like he's for real just going at it. I love it.
JT Spangler: And I remember big and. shouting that all the time.
Jeff: that all All the time. Not only does Big and Love... Romantic movies. and sports movies. and sport romantic movies.
Jeff: But he loves black people.
JT Spangler: Yeah. And he was all about telling people that, which in the 90s in Louisiana was a bold choice, and I appreciated it.
Jeff: yeah Bold choice. Bold choice. Jerry Maguire, this was a good choice.
JT Spangler: that move
JT Spangler: This is a great choice. i Put it on the other day at the house and I was like home During the middle of the day, my wife was eating. in the other room but like could see over the counter to the tv and she's like shouting i mean she's like i love jerry mcguire's yeah i know everyone loves jerry mcguire it's freaking great Awesome movie.
Jeff: Um, I was picturing in my head that there was dirty words and that was pretty much the reason it was rated R. and then like in the first 20 minutes Um,
Jeff: There's a pretty big scene in there that I wish I wasn't sitting next to Jake watching. But that's all right.
JT Spangler: If you think you were wishing... that. I promise.
Jeff: yeah he felt way worse
JT Spangler: That. Well, it's funny because Movie Life Crisis Season 6, Episode 18, Jerry Maguire. It's just, that's the only part. Like there's no other part in the movie where.
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: It's just like Kelly Preston. She's naked. Her tits are flopping around. She's like shouting.
Jeff: Yeah, she's got them both going clockwise, everything.
JT Spangler: Stop. Yes.
Jeff: was...
JT Spangler: and And then there's no other part of the movie where there're not there's not really a lot of F -bombs.
Jeff: Doing the thing.
JT Spangler: No one else is showing any of their private parts. Like, we probably could have...
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: frameed that and just got it.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: 13.
Jeff: Um, Not only could they have trimmed that.
JT Spangler: It was.
Jeff: because of the um gratuitous gratuitous sexiness of it but also um it was two hours and 20 minutes almost
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: They could have taken some stuff out.
JT Spangler: there's two hours two hours and 15 before the credits rolled so we had we had room to make some cuts although ah The movie was nominated for a. like best picture and cuba gooding jr wins and and a Golden Globe, and it printed money, I don't think.
Jeff: Oh yeah.
Jeff: No.
JT Spangler: anyone's like you should just taking kelly preston's tits out of the movie but
Jeff: that then
JT Spangler: In general, if you go from R to PG -13, you're going to make a lot more money. That's why people.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: do
Jeff: I wonder... um if that's how they tried to sell it to people and that's why it didn't happen. Hey, I think we should take to Kelly Princeton's boobs out of this movie. Uh, everybody's going to say no to that.
JT Spangler: And I was going to say, in the 90s, if you suggested that, everyone would be like, that guy's gay. We should probably fire him.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: All right. Maybe. Maybe we just didn't need it. but She was awesome. She would have been equally awesome if her boobs had not been in it.
Jeff: Yeah. Yeah. yeah Amen.
Jeff: I'm glad they're in there.
JT Spangler: I was. a lot more glad in 96 than I am now.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: point is fixed
Jeff: Same. Samesies.
JT Spangler: Now that, you know, she's dead and I'm old, I don't care as much about it. But in 96, it was like, what's up?
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: But you probably have this on DVD where the pause works really well.
Jeff: I need that ah frame to be completely clear. All this tracking in the middle is really ruining it.
JT Spangler: I want to put this on my Christmas list and then again on my birthday list.
Jeff: Hmm.
JT Spangler: Um,
Jeff: Put it on something.
JT Spangler: dude, I watched this movie. within the last year on an airplane, knowing that we were going to do it on the podcast. I was like, I just want, this is good. I like this movie so much, I'll just watch it on an airplane, and then I'll watch it again for the podcast in a few months. That's how much I like this movie.
Jeff: Yeah, agreed. i um Totally forgot. How good it was. Because it's been... Five or six years since I've seen it. So.
JT Spangler: Yeah. All right, do the synopsis.
Jeff: Synopsis. um A high flying sports agent gets fired for developing a conscious. I'm leaving him with the one loyal account. Um, an eccentric uh and um an eccentric football player And it's a desperate quest to prove the nice guys can finish first.
Jeff: Sort of.
JT Spangler: Yeah. I mean, it's The cast is... ah Stupendous. It's Cameron Crowe.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: He's writing and directing. I don't. I mean. This is one of those movies that if you're listening to a 90s movie podcast, it it's... it's unfathomable to me, that you would need us to explain Jerry Maguire.
Jeff: it's Right. I was going to say, you think anybody who listened to this has never seen Jerry Maguire?
JT Spangler: Yeah, like yeah if you if you just went through bulletproof. you i go's You're like, Jerry Maguire sounds interesting.
Jeff: <unk>
JT Spangler: I wonder what that's about.
Jeff: No.
JT Spangler: ah
Jeff: but i've i've and I've ingested all of Sandler's entire catalog, but what is this Jerry Maguire you speak of?
JT Spangler: Yeah. $50 million dollar budget, $273 million dollar gross. It's one.
Jeff: right That's pretty good.
JT Spangler: Ninth biggest movie of the year. It's yeah. 6X.
Jeff: It's got some legs.
JT Spangler: Bye -bye.
Jeff: Yeah. Yeah that's not bad.
JT Spangler: Yeah, I saw Jay Moore talking about, because he's... The... biggest cast member that will still go on anyone's podcast and talk about stuff like Tom Cruise doesn't need to do podcasts Cuba Gooding Jr. got like Soft cancelled or all the way cancelled, I'm not sure which.
JT Spangler: But Dan Orr's on there telling stories about Jerry Maguire.
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: And I've watched a couple of those and he was like. He's like, we weren't number one the first week because it was preacher's wife. and was you know, some other stuff. But then like number two, and the second week we were number one and that's. shocking because you're supposed to like fall off he's like and Number one, again, the third week.
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: It's like, yeah, dude, this movie. And it was like a holiday movie. So I was like, dude, you should go see that. Freaking hilarious. Cuba getting juniors. Awesome. Kelly Preston's they're all swinging in the same direction
Jeff: Yeah, I was going to say, I could see how this would be like a... Oh man, you got to go see this. It's so good type. word of mouth movie to get people going to see it.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Um, Yeah, it's I totally see how it. Killed it. 6X is pretty big.
JT Spangler: um Yeah, dude two Tell people about some of the awards. It won a ton of awards.
Jeff: ah Yeah, nominated for five Academy Awards. Best Picture, Best Actor, Tom Cruise, Best Supporting Actor, Cooper Gooding Jr., Best Screenplay, Best Film Editing.
Jeff: It won Cooper Gooding Jr. Best Supporting Actor. Which led to, a dude, I went back. I remembered his. Like acceptance speech being crazy.
Jeff: Over the top.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: It was super energetic. if you You should go back and watch it. It's great. um Tom Cruise won Golden Globe for Best Actor. Um,
JT Spangler: ah
Jeff: best supporting actor at the screen actors guild for kuba gooding jr like it's That's pretty good. Lots of words.
JT Spangler: Yeah, dude, that's that's pretty incredible. um The... This category is not as... Crowded as the best supporting actor category in 96 was ludicrous in 97 Not as much so, but it's still, he beat out William H.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Macy for Fargo. He beat out Edward Norton for Primal Fear.
Jeff: Nice.
JT Spangler: He beat up James Woods for Ghost of Mississippi. And then... Whatever. But. Um, Dude. Well deserved. This was an incredible performance. And it still is so great 30 years later.
Jeff: Absolutely.
JT Spangler: Even though I've seen like it could easily. be a caricature now because we've had 30 years of athletes talking all the time and now they all Like they didn't reproduce their own.
Jeff: Rude.
JT Spangler: documentaries and they have their own podcast and they shoot their own commercials and they go on. To freaking. NBA finals and talk loudly about their teams. Like. But it's still, this looks exactly like a wide receiver who's never puts his shirt on and is always talking.
Jeff: yeah Yeah, when he's talking to Roy Firestone at the end and he's got the blazer on with the vest with no shirt on and you can't even tell he's wearing a vest. um Yeah, dude. I mean, like...
Jeff: The whole time, Jake didn't even finish watching the whole thing, but the whole time he was like. Oh, this is... This is how receivers, I guess, always are. or this No, he said this is how football players always are.
Jeff: I was like, dude, not i mean not really.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: like
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: There was a time where people were, I mean, Tio. Being like he is, braggadocious and just like... Constantly doing. the trying to one -up himself from the last time.
JT Spangler: Well, it is like a stereotypical wide receiver because like Ocho Cinco was that way. But then there are plenty that weren't.
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: Like Jerry Rice wasn't really like. that loud and Randy Moss really wasn't either.
Jeff: Yeah. Right.
JT Spangler: And like Larry Fitzgerald wasn't, but there were plenty who were.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: I think it just was like...
Jeff: Dude.
JT Spangler: When there was cable sports, it got to be like there was just enough. Airwaves for people to really like get some extra
Jeff: Yeah, there's enough eyes looking at him now. Now everybody has their own soap opera. soapbox. Um,
JT Spangler: Rod Tidwell would definitely have a podcast. in 2026.
Jeff: oh Dude, he would have... um
JT Spangler: He'd be hosting with his brother.
Jeff: It said... Yeah, he I was going to say, he would say no to the $1 .4 million or whatever they offered him the first time, just like in the movie. Maybe not gotten the the thing, gotten hurt for reals, and then just started his podcast the next day.
JT Spangler: yeah And then he would have like a.
Jeff: relative to there.
JT Spangler: company that sold energy drinks or something too.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Um, and Your brother tragically lost his leg in a ah bass fishing accident.
Jeff: He's still got one leg, but he's still doing the thing. Amen.
JT Spangler: Oh. No sequels or spinoffs, although Cameron Crowe has said that he's been approached to do either a sequel movie or like a TV spinoff of this a bunch of times. He just has not wanted to do it really.
Jeff: Yeah, like, show me more money? what I mean, like... They wrapped it up pretty good, right? We don't need to see the rest of this.
JT Spangler: Yeah. And he also said that like he would. If he did want to do it, he would want it to follow the like Tidwell family and not the. Jerry Maguire.
Jeff: Of course.
JT Spangler: um But yeah, i I'm not upset that we don't have... more. of this truthfully. Like sometimes you just get it right. And then you just stop. You know?
Jeff: yeah why Yeah, that's what I'm saying. The one -off is the way to do this for sure. Perfect character arc.
JT Spangler: All right. the Do you remember the first time you saw this?
Jeff: I don't yeah I was late to this party. I was... People yell and show me the money all the time. And I was just like, yeah, yeah, me too. what you guys said.
Jeff: I didn't know what this was, but... Um,
JT Spangler: I'm positive I wasn't late to this, but I also don't remember the first time.
Jeff: I didn't see it in the movie theater for sure.
JT Spangler: Let's talk. Well, so it came out December 96. And so it earned. pretty far into 97 but it's that's over the like holiday break
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: Like I'm a sophomore in high school in 96, I think. um
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Or no, I guess 96 going to 97. I'm a junior in high school. But regardless, like you come back. for school. And the movie's kind of done its theatrical run. And the people that saw it are like dropping quotes. And then you just have to wait 90 days for it to come out on VHS.
Jeff: Yeah. I... yeah Only 90 days because now it's streaming before it gets released. Um.
JT Spangler: Yeah, or maybe 180 days in those days. I don't remember. Remember this remember sometimes the like new releases that were really expensive, they like $6 .99, would come out sooner?
Jeff: Yeah, yeah, yeah
JT Spangler: I don't know
Jeff: Yeah. yeah I do remember that i i dude i remember big and quoting the little kid he's like you know dogs and bees can smell fear like he's doing that whole bit and i'm like dude i don't know what you're talking about
JT Spangler: But there were some...
JT Spangler: The other part of it is like in the 90s, it's like even if you didn't see the movie, you you might have read the. Mad. magazine that had like a Jerry Maguire spoof.
Jeff: Cracked. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
JT Spangler: Like... have The quotes are like. Saturday Night Live is doing sketches. And it's like Even if you didn't see it, you're like catching the stuff that people are talking.
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: Like they show in a clip when Tom Cruise goes on. Friggin'. you know leno Like they show a scene. So you're still seeing parts of it.
Jeff: So I'm glad you're saying that because I was talking to my students yeah yesterday. about them not getting cultural references.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Because now there's so much content to consume.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: everybody just finds their own little niche thing that they like and they watch that over and over and they don't get the thing that everybody gets so like while i'm on the same so thing i don't know what quiet on the creek means but they keep saying it
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: But like... they They don't have the big things that everybody sees anymore that everybody can quote and all that stuff. um
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Back then, this was... dude Dude, everybody was saying, show me the money.
JT Spangler: Yeah. All right. Quiet on the Creek is a social media phrase and a song from rapper Saucy Santana that means to keep things low key. to stop talking. or to keep a secret.
Jeff: Yeah. Okay, good. I'm just as close as I was a few minutes ago.
JT Spangler: Right. Yeah.
Jeff: to understanding that whole because they're not using it right there they don't use any of the terms that like you know how like everybody's like oh man that's bad and your dad was like bad why is that bad no bad isn't good like we would Our generation switched words.
JT Spangler: What do you... Of course there is.
Jeff: They're doing the same thing. They're like, Mr. Horn. I'm just, I mess with you. I mess with you.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: You are right. I mess with you. I'm like, I don't know. Stop messing with me.
JT Spangler: How dare the youth misquote Saucy Santana.
Jeff: i don't
JT Spangler: um this so dude This movie comes out in December. they really December. It's gone from the theaters, I'm sure, in January. And then it doesn't come out on VHS until May 29th. We you don't, you don't.
JT Spangler: There's no school year to talk about this.
Jeff: Right, right.
JT Spangler: ah like in high school or in college. So you had to pick it up through cultural references, unless you happen to see it. um in theaters.
Jeff: I definitely did not.
JT Spangler: I mean, plenty of people did, but I don't think.
Jeff: I didn't.
JT Spangler: that I did.
Jeff: Yeah. Yeah, yeah. So where do you rate it?
JT Spangler: um As I mentioned, I... Love this movie. I
Jeff: yeah
JT Spangler: It's always on airplanes. It's always one of the things you can choose. And it's one of those that I will always, if I can't figure out what to choose like this. So dude, I'll hit like. Jerry Maguire. I'll hit the fifth element. I'll hit catch me if you can.
JT Spangler: Like if I see those on an airplane and I have the time to watch them, I'll just go, bam, play that. I like that.
Jeff: Yeah. i didn Here's where I am, man. I didn't even know you could choose what you want to watch on an airplane.
JT Spangler: Yeah dude. It's because you guys are driving places.
Jeff: Yeah, i don't like I don't like flying. Um, but So it's on the back of the headrest? Is that the thing? Yeah.
JT Spangler: Sometimes it's on the back of the headrest. Like when we go to Europe, it's on the back of the headrest. But if we go to like, like we're flying to Boston for a fall break, that'll probably be like, I'll watch it on my phone.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Like you connect to the planes. Wi -Fi.
Jeff: I gotcha, yeah.
JT Spangler: all the free stuff you can look at And like I get wolf with his tablet going on whatever dumb shit and then I go
Jeff: Nice.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: I'm going to... Um, Yeah, dude. So I'll always press play on this one. This is a nine and a half. Out of 10.
Jeff: Nine and a half. Nice.
JT Spangler: Yes. Because it's not perfect. It's not one of my favorite movies. Of all times, but it is one that like.
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: If it's on I'm watching. I couldn't pick. three scenes or three actors or three. quotes.
Jeff: Yeah, I was having trouble too.
JT Spangler: it's
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: It's so good.
Jeff: Yeah, yeah, same. um The only thing for me. was And again, I can't think of anything to cut out. especially kelly Kelly Preston's boobs.
Jeff: I can't think of what to cut out, but it just felt longer than I remembered. but still good. it's It's not like I was bored and it's not like it was bad. uh it just felt long So I gave it a nine.
Jeff: I gave it a nine.
JT Spangler: Do you have anything?
Jeff: Because, dude, it's fantastic. It's a near flawless. 90s. Classic.
JT Spangler: ah In general, if a movie is over two hours or over two and a half hours, I'm always going like, I wish that was shorter.
Jeff: So.
JT Spangler: But this one, while I was watching it, I wasn't going like, I would have cut this part out. Like some people are like, dude, you know what's really fun?
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: You watched The Lord of the Rings Extended Edition. I was like, all right, what when do I have 30 hours to do that?
Jeff: Yeah, who ha - Who has 13 hours per film? Nobody.
JT Spangler: who saw the freaking Return of the King and was like, you know what, I could use 40 extra minutes of this. Like, I don't, but I have people who.
Jeff: Right. Right right.
JT Spangler: Love that shit. I'm not
Jeff: ri Right right. Now I get that.
JT Spangler: Like, i I saw the runtime for Avengers. Doom, whatever. It's like three hours and five minutes. And I was like, damn shit. I don't, I mean, I'm gonna go see that, but like, I'm already.
Jeff: and Right.
JT Spangler: Why?
Jeff: Yeah. that's what That's when you got to, especially at the age that I am, you look up the thing beforehand and it tells you which scenes you can go pee at.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: They're like, wait, wait for Iron Man to say this and then you can leave. And this is what you miss.
JT Spangler: Yeah, yeah
Jeff: I need to find that website again. Three hours and five minutes is a lot. I didn't know it was going to be that long.
JT Spangler: Well, the Avengers movies always are because they have to tie up like 11 storylines and then also set up.
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: Next phase is a pain in the ass. The Spider -Man movie was like two hours and it was freaking. screen.
Jeff: So good.
JT Spangler: I was like, great, that's perfect.
Jeff: So good. Yeah.
JT Spangler: But I didn't have anything I wanted to take out.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Like Bohemian Rhapsody is long. I'm not trying to cut anything out of it.
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: This movie is long. I don't think I would really cut it. But.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Um,
Jeff: I don't know what to cut out either.
JT Spangler: it's not perfect
Jeff: but
JT Spangler: It's not a league of their own. But I gave it a 9 .5. I love this one.
Jeff: Yeah, dude, I'm right there with you. 9 .0 for me. I see that.
JT Spangler: let's do scenes man i had a hard time picking only three Um,
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: My first one is... When. ah Jay Moore. Takes him out. for uh To a sandwich. And he fires him and then they sprint back to the office to try to get all the clients.
Jeff: Yeah, and they're just phone they're playing phone tag.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Dude, and I loved. Loved. When he is talking to Rod Tidwell. And he could see all the lines lit up. that he needs to talk to.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: And he just can't let him go because you know, he'll lose him and he doesn't want to let him go. And they're just slowly blinking away. God, that was such a good way to show that.
JT Spangler: Okay. in ah In Cuba Gooding Jr., Rod Tidwell is just monologuing, and it's the it's from the the trailer that we just heard.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Thank you. We got to.
Jeff: I have an ant problem, Jerry.
JT Spangler: Show me the money. in these. Turns the fri radio up and he's him and his brother dancing.
Jeff: Yeah, dude, he hits me like it power fades it really fast and says. show me the money and then cranks it back up oh god So good.
JT Spangler: ah Dude, and he's like talking to the ice skater. She's like, oh, Jerry. She's like, oh. While waiting, she's like, hello, he's against me again.
Jeff: Okay. Still me.
JT Spangler: Hmm.
Jeff: Help me!
JT Spangler: sir
Jeff: ah Meanwhile, Jay Moore is lying about. Jerry the whole time.
JT Spangler: Yeah. dinafor is being so freaking slimy he's like hey he's like you know mcguire he's like i'm not gonna i don't want to say drugs but whatever he's like i just want to make sure you're taken care of And...
Jeff: I'm not saying it was drugs. Ah, man. What a jerk.
JT Spangler: Dude, and Jay Moore was talking about getting the parties. Like I went into like. audition for kushman the quarterback. And while I was there, they were like, would you read for the nanny? And he was, yeah, of course, whatever.
JT Spangler: And he's like, so he's like I
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: memorized all the liner notes on the Miles Davis tape. And I went in there and did that part. and they're like would you Bob Sugar.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: And he's, yeah, of course. he's But i he's like, I didn't know. He's like, I had like long hair, like a professional wrestler. I didn't own a suit. He's like, they gave me that part. It's the first movie I'd ever been in. I had no idea.
JT Spangler: Um, what it was doing.
Jeff: Dude, that's awesome. That's awesome.
JT Spangler: Yeah. And then he was talking about that scene. He's like, you know, he's like, I like I fired Jerry McGuire. And he's like. He's like, you know I'm here to let you go. He's like, and then there's a pause. He's like, but then I have the next line. He's like, so I wanted to, but I was like my first day ever working on a movie. He's like, I wanted to pause, but I knew if I waited too long, someone would just call the line out to me. So I was just trying to. hold
Jeff: Wait just long enough to not.
JT Spangler: It's real. Thanks.
Jeff: Yeah. Yeah. Dude, i I kind of like Jay more. I liked all the stuff he's been in. um
JT Spangler: Well, it's perfect casting because I think he really is a sleazeball. and
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: All the stories of him telling, like he I saw him talking to Jerry O 'Connell. Um, about the movie and jerry o 'connell was going like remember when you do this he's like i don't remember that but that sounds exactly like what i would have done in the 90s.
Jeff: Dude, and when Jerry O 'Connell is like... ah warming up or showing off what he can do.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: And they show the sidelines and everybody's like shocked with how hard he can throw it or how far he can throw it or whatever. Did you notice one of the guy's t -shirts?
JT Spangler: Yeah.
JT Spangler: No.
Jeff: It was the big T. With the S and the U on either side. It was definitely necessary roughness school.
JT Spangler: Yeah. reference i I did see that.
Jeff: whatever that whatever that school was called i was like that's totally
JT Spangler: Texas State, I'm not bequeathing it to you.
Jeff: Texas State.
JT Spangler: Um, But yeah, dude, like, hey. Because Jay Moore said like they were like in a van going to. uh like from a shoot and like one of the wardrobe people was in the van and tom cruise is also in the van And like one of the wardrobe people told me, you know, when you.
JT Spangler: Like after at the end of the day, you could hang your. Wardrobe back up. And it wouldn't. it wouldn't be as much work to get it. pressed for the next day and he's like i was just a total shit and he said i was like well i don't work in the wardrobe department He's like, can Turns around from the front of the van.
Jeff: holy crap
JT Spangler: He's like. He's like, you know, these wardrobe people, is that they're here way earlier than we are. He's like, that's just they're they're working so hard. And he was like, realizing he's like, I'm. the world's biggest. D -bag?
Jeff: Oh, man.
JT Spangler: ay I'll see you later.
Jeff: Dude. but
JT Spangler: As much as Tom Cruise is a sketchy human being who like fronts for a cult, and I don't like that about him.
Jeff: Yeah, yeah
JT Spangler: ah He seems like a really good guy to work with.
Jeff: Yeah, dude, every time like he has like the. opening things in the movie theater he like stops and talks to the concession person and makes him feel like hurt and all that kind of stuff is cool i just wish he didn't believe in Space Jesus, yeah.
JT Spangler: Is he there? Yeah, and suck people into his cult and do...
Jeff: That's weird. Yeah.
JT Spangler: crappy things to his wives.
Jeff: Yeah, that's weird
JT Spangler: Get it. But that's my first one is the firing and they're racing to get all the clients. do instant Cuba Gooding Jr.'s monologuing.
Jeff: Ugh. I did. So mine is right after that. Um, After he has to pack up all of his stuff and leave, which by the way, he left a lot of memorabilia.
JT Spangler: Yeah, dude
Jeff: I mean, right till Will's kid messed up a bunch of it, but he left a lot of memorabilia behind. um And. he does the i'm not going to do what everybody thinks i'm going to do it just flip out yeah um
JT Spangler: It's crazy.
Jeff: So, like, I... ah Something about that and how. Isolated, he... felt and looked and he's like wow this is embarrassing because nobody wanted to come with him he's like who's coming with me
JT Spangler: Yeah. So you can see my look.
Jeff: After...
JT Spangler: These fish, these are loyal. They're coming with me.
Jeff: Other than the fish. Who's coming with me? And then, you know, Renee Zellweger ends up doing the thing. But like the guy that was standing up on the balcony, I guess like the boss or something, he was just like shaking his head and like walked off.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Everybody was. like quiet and just staring at him. uh i um I love that. And I love when... uh Renee Zellweger.
Jeff: What the hell's her name? Dorothy? Dorothy. dorothy
JT Spangler: It's worthy.
Jeff: Dorothy. She stands up and she's like, I'll come with you. And she wasn't thinking at all, gets in the elevator and she's like, does this have.
JT Spangler: Yeah. She's like, are we going to have health insurance?
Jeff: Help. Yeah. Um, So I like it. it's um
JT Spangler: Dude, it's a great setup for the movie. it And it like. Tom Cruise is like the last. great action star but also This isn't an action movie, and he's fucking brilliant in it.
Jeff: Yeah, he's he's a good actor, dude.
JT Spangler: He's like... un
Jeff: He just is.
JT Spangler: we did ah He's doing his speech to like. 100 people. He's like, as I stand here. Uh, leaving the agency that I helped build. I'm sorry.
JT Spangler: It's true.
Jeff: Yeah, yeah, yeah
JT Spangler: Dude, he's in like... He's doing. He's doing really big stuff in parts of this movie, and he's doing really little stuff. Sometimes I was like, this guy is a really good.
Jeff: Hey.
JT Spangler: I'm not surprised. won an Oscar, but he's a really freaking good actor.
Jeff: Dude, he is a good actor. That's what I'm saying. Like, I know. It's a frigging cult. But it's it's... Frigging fun to watch his movies.
JT Spangler: Yeah. And also, like, he writes his memo mission statement. And, like, he comes in, everybody's giving him a standing applause. And, like, Jay Moore's like, touch me. He's like, you said, like, everything we're thinking. Everyone's, they all, and they can't wait to fire him. Hey.
JT Spangler: They're all so shady and so full of it, and I love that.
Jeff: And dude, Jay Moore plays that perfect too at the restaurant. He's like, think how I feel. I've been carrying around this in my head for a week. Oh, God. What a jerk.
JT Spangler: you know yourself I had to fire my mentor.
Jeff: it was oh ah Oh, man. God. blessed. That's a Yeah. that whole that whole setup is great
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Um,
JT Spangler: It's delightful.
Jeff: I'm pretty sure we have the same second part. We gotta.
JT Spangler: The second part is when... um Jerry Maguire visits Dorothy's house late at night. Drunk. And he's just sitting on the couch talking to the kid, Ray.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Fucking love that part.
Jeff: I like that kid. He's got a big old noggin, and I like him.
JT Spangler: Dude, the kid is great. Like he's like sitting on the couch. He's hammered and like Renee Zellweger and. Bonnie Hunt, she's going to get him a drink. in there
Jeff: God. Bonnie hunts amazing.
JT Spangler: are you the Lonnie Hunt's incredible. And Renee Zellweger is really good. And he's just sitting on the couch with his sunglasses and his beeper and his freaking cell phone and his other cell phone.
Jeff: Yeah.
Jeff: yes Speed break.
JT Spangler: And the kid like comes out of his room. He's supposed to be asleep, but they're just sitting on the couch and he's just talking to the kid who's like four. like he's an adult and he's like my dad worked for 38 years and it When he retired, you know what he said?
JT Spangler: He said, I wish they'd give me a more comfortable chair. and then the And the kid's like. but i like the zoo he's like hold on i'm trying to tell you something and And the kids just like.
JT Spangler: see But we should go to the zoo. just We should go to the zoo right now. he's I don't know what to tell you. ray The fucking zoo's closed. yes
Jeff: dude that's
JT Spangler: Dude, and the...
Jeff: Didn't.
JT Spangler: and The kid hits him with it. You said fuck. Yeah. It won't tell.
Jeff: I won't tell. Dude, I love that.
JT Spangler: Hmm.
Jeff: Dude, that kid's just his glasses.
JT Spangler: Yes.
Jeff: a constant smile, his big old noggin.
JT Spangler: This is where it gets spiked up here.
Jeff: Jonathan. li Lipnicki. Jonathan Lipnicki.
JT Spangler: Yeah. Yeah.
Jeff: Um, I like that kid. He's he's fantastic. ah He looks just like you think he would now, by the way.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: um
JT Spangler: Of course he does. But also in that scene, he's ah he's like swinging around the fireplace poker. and he like
Jeff: Oh yeah.
JT Spangler: Then he points at the fish. He's like. We meet again. like he's just There's so many. Good. bits in that.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: and seen ah
Jeff: ah yeah You think they just let the kid go and like. Like, be funny or whatever. Because I don't know, man, how do you write some of this stuff?
JT Spangler: I don't. I'm sure that that's just Cameron Crowe. doing Cameron Crowe. But then, like, before Rene's l where it comes back in, the kid's, like, in the middle of a sentence.
Jeff: What?
JT Spangler: He's like. that's my mom i gotta go and tom cruise is still talking to me he's like i gotta go to bed that's my mom
Jeff: Yeah. Ah, man. That's good shit. uh so we don't have the same second one then uh mine is show me the money when he calls rod tidwell
JT Spangler: Yep.
Jeff: And he is just going off. They've already said like his wife already told him that. What is it? Waterbeds that he has to. um That he's the... The king of water, but or no, he...
Jeff: God. Was it waterbeds? And the signs behind his couch.
JT Spangler: Yeah, he's like laying on the waterbed like wearing like a shirt.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Like Aladdin hat.
Jeff: Like, it's weird, though, because like she just says that and it just sounds like a throwaway line in addition to that. But it's all tied in that he's actually been advertising for them.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: um And he's like walking around just like everybody does when they're talking on the phone. And he's like pointing out the stuff that he has. He's talking to Jerry and he's grabbing his kid, walking him to his plate, turning him around and walking him back to the sink so he could put his plate up. um
JT Spangler: Yeah, he's like, i'm got its che he's like, he's like, look, I got like thing i water.
Jeff: I just freaking, I just.
JT Spangler: My brother TP's room is say hello to TP. Like, what's up, Jerry's guy, TP? um
Jeff: I just. I think. Rod Tidwell knew, Cuba Gooding Jr. knew he had all of the power. And he was using it to his advantage. and God, the what the hoops he makes Jerry Maguire jump through are just fantastic. the I love black people. Show me the money.
Jeff: Uh, Like.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: You're my...
JT Spangler: Well, I had that because it's part of the firing and the client race. And that's when that conversation happens.
Jeff: yeah Yeah. Yeah. I just, that specific, just show me the money. I know that's the part that everybody remembers and you complete me and you had me at hello and all that, but. I just, dude, it's too.
Jeff: great actors doing their thing back and forth. I thought it was great. I thought it was awesome
JT Spangler: the The one that I liked is when... um His wife, Regina. um King. Comes to. Talk to Jerry Maguire. And she's like. Talking about the water bets. She's like.
JT Spangler: And she's like, you know. like Shoes. What?
Jeff: and Yeah, I know the ah the the the golden jewels, yeah.
JT Spangler: I never thought that. of advertising.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: She's like, I majored in marketing and so did my husband. We came to play. I was like, God, she's frigging awesome.
Jeff: and dude she was like in her 20s when that happened like she was so good she still is so good
JT Spangler: Yeah. Yes. She was incredible.
Jeff: Still is so good.
JT Spangler: If that scene had more to it, I would have put that there, but there's too many good ones to pick from.
Jeff: Yeah. Um, Yeah, so I went with Show Me the Money, that him yelling.
JT Spangler: Yeah. I did not.
Jeff: Back and forth.
JT Spangler: I captured that in my main scene. is that That was your second?
Jeff: That was my segment.
JT Spangler: My third one. uh They're... They're leaving one of the Cardinals games. They're walking to the bus. Jerry Maguire, Rod Tidwell, Cuba Gooding Jr., Tom Cruise, and they're just talking. And they're they're like starting to build their relationship. Like he's not dressing as fancy. They're starting to like, just like joke around and know about each other's lives.
JT Spangler: And it's like... yeah He's like, are we friends? We're really friends. uh And. And keep it good and generous. Yeah, let's get with friends. He's like, well let me tell you why you don't have your contract. And, dude, he frigging unloads on them.
JT Spangler: Exactly. He's like, because you are a paycheck player. He's like, in your personal life, it's all hard. But in on the field, it's all about what you didn't get, who didn't throw to you, who owes you the money.
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: All right. And. ah Dude. And they just unloading each other and keep getting junior. It cracks me up. I watched it like three times. It cracked me up every other time. He's like getting ready to go on the bus. He's like. I won't be friends no more.
Jeff: Yeah. i Dude.
JT Spangler: Stop saying that's my word.
Jeff: I think, to but... For reals, like, that's ah that's just great writing. Like him.
JT Spangler: It's great writing. It's a pivotal point in the movie for Rod Tidwell's character. And when Cuba Gooding Jr. says, I won't be friends no more.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Hey. God, he cracks me up.
Jeff: I am. but
JT Spangler: And Tom Cruise is going, you know. This is a... He's doing that shit? That was killing me.
Jeff: I think, dude, so... Part of me going into it. Because when I go to pull up the movie. there's like a little. blurb about it. And it said that Cuba Gooding Jr.
Jeff: won the Oscar. And I was like, really?
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: I remember him being over the top, like, you know, a wide receiver. Um, But as you watch it, he really is. He deserved it. He he did a great job.
JT Spangler: Dude, he's incredible. I love Cuba Gooding Jr.'s. work let me be clear about that because he's gotten an at least medium canceled uh for some uh not cool sexual misconduct allegations, but I love his acting and he's incredible in this movie.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: And it's a...
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: movie so it's not surprising he's totally like Edward Norton is great. and Primal Fear or whatever the fear movie that he did this year.
Jeff: Yeah. Yeah. yeah
JT Spangler: this is the right This is the right answer.
Jeff: This is the right golf. Yeah, it is
JT Spangler: He's incredible.
Jeff: Um,
JT Spangler: So memorable. And I know I'm sure that that's all Cameron Crowe's dialogue, but dude, he crushed it.
Jeff: Yeah, he did. he He did a great job. even ah Renee Zellweger, who wasn't. Anything, really. And.
JT Spangler: No, dude. 27, she had done Empire Records.
Jeff: Shh.
JT Spangler: Like, she wasn't Bridget Jones or any of the stuff she goes on to do. She wasn't a, like...
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: name She becomes one after this movie.
Jeff: Yeah. she's a she's she's davided she she She was a good choice for this, too. Um, My third one, it's probably. What?
Jeff: I don't know. It feels like I picked this one and it's like, oh, of course he picked this one. This is the one that everybody thinks of. But dude, while I was watching it, I was like that. That was really good. It's the Dorothy's living room. divorce. support group thing going on at the end. And they're all just bashing men and talking about how ah crappy their love lives was when they were married.
Jeff: um And then he comes in and does the whole. You complete me and she does the shut up. You had me at hello thing. Dude, I love that. I like how they wrapped it all up in a bow. I like how. um They were saying the right things.
Jeff: I don't know. It just feels like some of the movies I watch now don't have all of the. they're not They're not trying as hard. same same with the rap music they're just They're not alluding to anything. They're just coming out and saying it. This was this was nice. I liked it. So I put it on there.
JT Spangler: Yeah, that's a great scene. um It's classic. It's a really good. almost end of the movie because it's not the actual and there's a couple things happening after that some little things but
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: uh It's great. the like divorced woman's group that happens in the house that like bonnie har hunt is a part of It's fantastic. touch because they keep having have like.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Scenes of the movie around these like bitter angry lesbians. I'm just joking.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: They're just normal women. uh who are angry for very legitimate reasons um
Jeff: yeah He...
JT Spangler: But...
Jeff: But...
JT Spangler: it to be there.
Jeff: Dude.
JT Spangler: is very angry.
Jeff: yeah and when he walks in he was just like I guess we'll do this here. it doesn't like He just didn't even care. He just dropped his bag.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: ga Gave the speech right there. um And then he starts it off and he, you could tell he wasn't. saying what he needed to say. And the girls were looking at him and look at it.
Jeff: Renee Zellweger, and they were going back and forth, and then he freaking nails it.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: I liked it. That's why I threw it in there.
JT Spangler: Yeah, dude, that's a good one let's do, um, Man, I really I would have loved to have gotten something with Bonnie Hunt in there because she was. Great. But there's just there's too many great people in this movie and there's too many great...
JT Spangler: parts.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Bye. But like she, after they got married and like, they're like hanging in the kitchen, like he's having a beer and she's having a beer.
Jeff: Nya.
JT Spangler: And they just. like the cheers and she's just like If you fuck this up I'll kill you.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Peace. He just goes like. I love when we have these talks, Laurel.
Jeff: ah Um, Dude, I freaking love me some Bonnie Hunt. I love her. Return to me. where she is mini driver's friend god she was she's just good in all the things
JT Spangler: you She's delightful.
Jeff: She's fantastic. So funny.
JT Spangler: All right, let's do quotes.
Jeff: So funny.
Jeff: Um, All right, so I had the... Ray? the little kid. And Jerry Maguire, it's the part you were talking about. and he's just like uh you know the human the human head eight weighs eight pounds oh this is not the same part you're talking about but they're talking back and forth he's in the back seat i think when he's saying this And he's just rattling off.
Jeff: so like stats. The human head weighs eight pounds. I can literally picture Biggin with his stupid glasses and squinty eyes saying the same thing.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: And Jerry Maguire comes back to him with Troy Aikman.
JT Spangler: Trey Eggman.
Jeff: In six years, he threw for like 16 ,000 yards or whatever the thing is. um And then he comes back. He's like, did you know bees and dogs could smell fear? Um, and then he says something about pete rose and he's like my neighbor has three or three rabbits Dude, I totally forgot about the three rabbits. I couldn't remember how they. cut that off i ah I find that kid fantastic. I don't know if he's still acting, but he needs to.
Jeff: Because he was he was great.
JT Spangler: He um is as with most child actors, is not as cute an adult actor as he was a kid actor. But. this is great what i loved about that is that he's ah that kid is about the age that my son is And you will, like, if you try to have a conversation with them, like you might get a couple factoids, and then it'll be some, like, nonsense about some friend of theirs.
JT Spangler: It maybe is, or like some. TV. character Like.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Did you know the super kitties? Try to fight. Mr. Puppy Boss. I'm like, yes, I did know that.
Jeff: the
JT Spangler: Thank you. there.
Jeff: I was also watching that with you. Yes.
JT Spangler: I was, I was there. Like, he was like, Hey, could you get my chair? When you go downstairs, I was like, yeah, I'll get it. And he's like shouting after me. He's like, it's in the den. I was like, I didn't know where the. Chair is? a lot of shit in there. But yeah, so I loved to how realistic that conversation was.
Jeff: uh very realistic apparently uh the kid was like rattling off some of those ah stats just on the set so Cameron Crowe let him throw some of those in there
JT Spangler: nice
Jeff: ah So that's good.
JT Spangler: Take care. That's great. My first one is from Jay Moore's character, Bob Sugar.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: He's like talking to one of the people on the phone when he's trying to steal clients. He's like, hey, is that how's it going? He's like, I haven't seen you since so we were at that strip joint in Phoenix. He's like, you remember the name of that girl you went on with that night? He's like, I do. He's like, that's my job. to Remember the name of skanks you bang on the road. He's like, here, hang on. Talk to Lucas. Thank you.
Jeff: India. Uh...
JT Spangler: But... So slimy, and I freaking, I've always loved that. I do. That's my job to remember the scant name of skanks you bang on the road. It's like that's the perfect sleazy agent line.
Jeff: And also, I thought that he was delivering those lines. if like that's his first movie and he i thought he did a great job just
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Just knocking those out. Peace.
JT Spangler: That's what I'm saying. I don't. know that that's a testament to his skill as an actor as much as it is that he understands very well what it's like to be a really sleazy guy.
Jeff: Yeah, he just is already a jerk. Yeah.
JT Spangler: But he's fantastic in the movie.
Jeff: Um, Yeah. Yes. um So dude, my second one is... um is a dirty word, but he Rod Tidwell is making him yell stuff to keep him as a a client.
Jeff: um and he's like saying you know show me the money and he's yelling it back show me the money he's like um He's like, yeah. Well, brother, you got to yell that shit. And he's yelling it. And he's like, do you love this black man? I love the black man. Show me the money. He's like, do you love black people? I love black people. He's like, who's your motherfucking Jerry? yeah And he is just screaming it.
Jeff: I love it.
JT Spangler: Do you?
Jeff: there's
JT Spangler: he's shouting you can see like they shoot it like through the glass window of his office and he's like leaned over shouting so hard his hair is moving. It's fantastic.
Jeff: Yeah. yeah easily and they they they purposely put the mic out there and you can hear it muffled through the glass, just screaming.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: It's great. It's great.
JT Spangler: My second quote is... Similar to that, but just show me the money. Because. There's like three iconic quotes that come out of this movie.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: It's you complete me. You had me at hello and show me the money and show me the money.
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: To me, it was the biggest of those.
Jeff: Yeah, it was. It was.
JT Spangler: They're like. We still say. Like... Like my wife and I still say like mo money, mo problems like once a month. And I feel like the money is like on the same like level.
Jeff: Ah, mo' money, mo' problems. It's just like my man Puff's thing.
JT Spangler: Like, we'll go. like We'll go to try and find, like, we've got to meet with our accountant. More money, more problems.
Jeff: Um, I'd like a couple more problems if if possible. That would be nice.
JT Spangler: I've got 99 problems, but money is is definitely one of them.
Jeff: but Dude, I told the kids, we said, I said. We were talking about Martin Luther, and I was like, yeah, he put 95 theses on the door. He's like, 95 problems with the church. He's got 99 problems, and the church is all of them. I was like, you know, like Jay -Z? And they were like...
Jeff: Who? What?
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: I'm like, y 'all don't know 99 Problems by Jay -Z? And they're like, I don't listen to Jay -Z.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: I was like, how do you not? How old is that song?
JT Spangler: That old guy.
Jeff: And then I looked it up and I was like, oh no, I'm old. World.
JT Spangler: Yeah, dude Yeah, they're not they're not trying to learn about the historical rappers. They're trying to learn about... What's that say? What does that guy's name was? Saucy Fisherman, whatever his name is.
Jeff: I don't know, something about a creek.
JT Spangler: Saucy Santana.
Jeff: I just... Santana. That's it.
JT Spangler: The internet might have made that name up. I don't know who that is.
Jeff: No.
JT Spangler: We'll be right back.
Jeff: That's definitely a name I've heard. He sings smooth with Rob Thomas, doesn't he? Hmm?
JT Spangler: Yeah, it's on all the time.
Jeff: that
JT Spangler: ah What's your third quote?
Jeff: Uh, dude, I put, you had me at hello. I just, I really liked that last scene. and Not the last, last scene, but you know what I mean?
JT Spangler: I put those for a bonus.
Jeff: The wrap -up scene.
JT Spangler: You complete me and you had me at hello just because those been around forever.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: ah My third one is another one that I love. from this movie was when he's talking to cuba good and junior and he's wearing that like freaking crushed orange Uh, Jumps.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: All the way unzipped. And he's like. He's like, wait, Tom Cruise is like. What do you know about dating a single mother? He's like, no, it's... I was raised by a single mother. He's giving him the whole speech. And he's...
JT Spangler: He's like, do you love her? He's like, well, how do I know? What do you mean, how do you know? He's like, you know, he's like, well, I kept like a feeling where like, you know, I don't want her to leave. he's Dude. And Cuba getting junior starts to get pissed off at him. He's i he like. Take a look at it.
JT Spangler: He's like, a real man. Wouldn't shoplift the pootie from a single mother. And. Dude in freaking Tom Cruise.
Jeff: Shut up.
JT Spangler: White as the driven snow comes back. He's like, I did not. Shoplift the booty.
Jeff: I do like that crushed velvet. uh thing too it's got the big butterfly collar and the white
JT Spangler: Yes.
JT Spangler: Yeah, dude.
Jeff: Edge. Cut. Yeah.
JT Spangler: What? A real man wouldn't shoplift the booty from a single mother.
Jeff: I would.
JT Spangler: That shit always cracks me up.
Jeff: That ah definitely also reminds me of why she being such a cooter Nazi. um Because... I'll never forget that.
JT Spangler: Hmm. Hmm.
Jeff: That was hilarious.
JT Spangler: okay
Jeff: Probably because I wasn't drinking at all. But...
JT Spangler: That's ridiculous.
Jeff: Amen. Very funny night. um
JT Spangler: na Yeah.
Jeff: yeah good call this thing is full of quotes um
JT Spangler: This. quotes. I left out so many.
Jeff: Yeah. Um, All of you who haven't seen it. You should definitely watch it for the quotes.
JT Spangler: right Let's... Let's do characters. Who's your first?
Jeff: Rod Tidwell. Dude, just...
JT Spangler: That did well.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Keep it in your head.
Jeff: Unforgettable. Just a blend of just. Brash arrogance and like. insecurity but like family devotion and he's super funny and he's over the top i just loved it he was Fantastic.
JT Spangler: the Well, the great thing about the writing and the performance and the direction is like, this is a character that is depth.
Jeff: Rod Thibault.
JT Spangler: Like he is like a. He's a brash cocky day hole.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: on the field, but like. He loves his wife. He loves his kids. He loves his brother.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Like he's. He's got heart. ah He is funny.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: like He's a good friend to Jerry Maguire. Like, dude, he is fantastic. And he's also hilarious. Like, dude, they're... in the freaking locker room having a conversation he's like stepping on sherry's completely And Jeremy Gore's like, Tao's like, nah, air dry.
JT Spangler: Please. so he Stand there talking to him for like 10 minutes while he's completely butt -ass naked. uh Dude, just all that shit. And he's like... Hey, he's got this super thin goatee and he's always wearing a chain with his number on it.
Jeff: that Dude, it's super thin. Super thin.
JT Spangler: It's great.
Jeff: Um, Yeah, I like him, dude. He's freaking a little aging as far as ah NFL standards go for a wide receiver. He's undersized, but like.
Jeff: He's angry about his contract, but he wants to play dude and he's he's a sun devil jerry i'm a sun devil like he Loves Arizona. He's fantastic.
JT Spangler: They're trying to like do the commercial where he's going to get on the camel. He's like, tell the camel, get down here. I'm not getting up on the camel. And then.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: And Jerry's like trying, he's like, hold on. And he's telling the director, he's like, I'll get, hold on. i I'll get him on the camel. Just give me a second. and then he's like going to talk to cuba getting junior and and then jerry's like He's like, you know what? Just like, he's like, we will pull the plug.
JT Spangler: And... Rod Tidwell at first, he's like, no, no, I just want the camel to... And then he immediately goes like, yeah, you're right. Just fuck this. is We don't need this shit. And like. Dude.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: And there was some line in there like... about like we're not bringing Reebok to their knees with no Camelad. And. The movie had a product placement deal with Reebok that was supposed to be in the movie and it kind of fell apart.
JT Spangler: And then like they put it in that line, like making fun of Reebok, like to get back at him.
Jeff: Something happened, yeah.
Jeff: Yeah, I saw yeah saw that.
JT Spangler: end. That shit's delightful.
Jeff: That. Dude, that that's what I'm saying. That kind of stuff is fantastic. Um,
JT Spangler: He's incredible.
Jeff: Also...
JT Spangler: This is the best performance of his career.
Jeff: BANG!
JT Spangler: For sure.
Jeff: Was that... um Was that part where Rod Tillwell's filming that where we see Troy Aikman? No, no, no it was when he was at the when he's being interviewed by Roy Firestone.
JT Spangler: No.
Jeff: That's...
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: That's when we see Troy. Troy Aikman is super young.
JT Spangler: Yeah, dude
Jeff: Good lord.
JT Spangler: He'd only had like... 30 or 40 concussions at this point
Jeff: Troy Aikman wanted to be here, but he got a concussion opening the invitation.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Um,
JT Spangler: He said, Yawn.
Jeff: ah Yeah, dude, Cooper Gooding Jr., Rod Tillow, that's my first choice. 28 years old, he killed it.
JT Spangler: he's He's amazing. um Tom Cruise is my number two, Jerry Maguire.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Those are the to that I Don't think I could replace and still do this movie. This cast.
Jeff: Yeah, agreed.
JT Spangler: Unbelievable. But everyone else, I think I could put someone else in the role and it would probably still work. Even if I would.
Jeff: I don't.
JT Spangler: It is much.
Jeff: Yeah, I mean... and time
JT Spangler: But those... behalf.
Jeff: could tom i mean does tom cruise go on to do anything after this movie like
JT Spangler: I don't know I don't know what he's been up to.
Jeff: He's...
JT Spangler: They offered this movie to Tom Hanks, Cameron Crowe.
Jeff: Ooh.
JT Spangler: wrote it for Tom Hanks and Tom Hanks wanted to do it, but it took so long to get done that he'd already got ready to do. um that thing you do, which he's also directing.
Jeff: That thing you do. Yeah.
JT Spangler: Like dude, if you can't get Tom Hanks and you settle on Tom Cruise, life is pretty good for you.
Jeff: Right. But dude...
JT Spangler: And I'm not.
Jeff: This isn't the same movie with Tom Hanks.
JT Spangler: Tom? It's not the same movie with Tom Hanks. My all time favorite actor. It's not the same movie. That's what I'm saying.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Like I couldn't. you know I'm sure it would still be good. But I just like I couldn't replace either of those two and still have the same movie.
Jeff: yeah
JT Spangler: And I think I could everyone else. I think everyone else, like I could put someone else in their part and they'd probably be okay.
Jeff: Yeah. You just need somebody just. handsome, polished. Charming. Um,
JT Spangler: Well, Tom Hanks just Tom Hanks is a much. Better actor than Tom Cruise, but Tom Cruise has just has like a charisma that really nobody in my lifetime has met
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: except for like Brad Pitt had like a little run, but Tom Cruise is just like, he's freaking whatever, 65.
Jeff: And.
JT Spangler: And he's still on screen ripped. And it's like, I'm i' interested in what this guy's doing. I don't know.
Jeff: Yeah. Yeah.
JT Spangler: Even what... movie is about.
Jeff: I don't even know what he's doing, but I'll take it. um Dude, he's got a new movie coming out where he doesn't look ripped at all.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: And he looks like an old man.
JT Spangler: Nice.
Jeff: something with a shovel i can't remember what it's called i saw the preview um
JT Spangler: Yeah. Yeah, I'm ready.
Jeff: Dude, and he's 34 in this. And. His resume before this, I mean, we've talked about him before. you know, the firm and interview of the vampire and few good men. and Days of Thunder and...
JT Spangler: Top Gun.
Jeff: Top Gun. Rain Man and friggin...
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Risky business, all the stuff. But then he goes on.
JT Spangler: Mission accomplished.
Jeff: To freaking kill it. All the Mission Impossibles, freaking minority report. and Collateral. That movie was my jam.
JT Spangler: Well, that's the... That's the crazy thing about Tom Cruise is that if his career had ended with this movie. You would be going like. Dude had a hell of a run. Made like.
Jeff: Yeah. The...
JT Spangler: Made like 15 years of great movies, and he's made 30 more years of great movies since then. It's ludicrous.
Jeff: Yeah. And how is so how is he not, like, he's got to be in the top earners of all time. I know, like. Um,
JT Spangler: If you take out Marvel and Star Wars Heat... skyrockets to the top of the list.
Jeff: Right. Yeah, I could see that. Yeah, I could see that.
JT Spangler: be it But like if you look at... It. Like his filmography prior to this is like, all right, dude, he did Risky Business and he did Top Gun and he did. fricking cocktail and. Rain Man and... few good men. and
Jeff: cocktail
JT Spangler: days of thunder and like the outsiders and And. You're in. Mission Impossible, Born on the Fourth of July, The Firm. Sick. That's crazy.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: And he's Barely getting started.
Jeff: Yeah, he's...
JT Spangler: He does. the first Impossible movie this year, he's still doing them.
Jeff: Yeah. And they're still good. And they're arguably better than that first one. I like the new stuff better.
JT Spangler: the I like the last one. People got mad about how fanservice -y he was. I'm always a fan of fanservice.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: But I don't think anybody needs... us to explain why Tom Cruise is a good actor and maybe not a good dude.
Jeff: Yeah. Unless, of course, we want to talk about Edge of Tomorrow, because that's my jam.
JT Spangler: uh
JT Spangler: Awesome.
Jeff: <unk>s Just kidding.
JT Spangler: Love that one.
Jeff: Just kidding. So who'd you pick for three?
JT Spangler: I pitched Regina King.
Jeff: Dude, so it was between her and Renee Zellweger. And Regina King did so, like when she. When they're at the interview and he gets the piece like this sheet was just handed to me. I want to let you know that you got a brand new contract offered to you for years. whatever it was, 11. million dollar whatever Number of us.
JT Spangler: Yep.
Jeff: um her face as it was happening. And he's like naming all the people he loves. And he's like, and I love my wife and I love my brother. You're militant, but I love you. And dude, her, face she did such a good.
Jeff: Good job at that part. ah shes She's just... And she's a strong... uh advocate for him and her family gosh she really was good i probably should have picked her but i went with renee zellweger
JT Spangler: i was I was considering her. I was consider considering Renee Zellweger. I thought renell' zell wier Renee was really good. Because it's...
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Not a flashy part, but she's the emotional center of the movie.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: And she was like. She's got to be all these things and she is. um But I just loved Regina King.
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: in this movie. I thought that part was incredible. Like, she had she showed a lot of really good range. She was funny. She was badass.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: uh So I was like, dude, I gotta, but like, I, like, I also thought about Bonnie Hunt. She didn't really have a big enough part, but she. is stellar.
Jeff: She was great
JT Spangler: But... It's like, dude. Cameron Crowe does a really good job of like... Making a movie. That is a blockbuster, but also making sure there's stuff for women to do in that movie. which is awesome.
Jeff: Right. Yeah. ah She was 25 when this movie. 26, 25 or 26.
JT Spangler: Yeah. And Renee Zellweger was 27.
Jeff: Dude, that's crazy
JT Spangler: They're also about the age they're supposed to be. Jerry Maguire is supposed to be 35. Cruz is 34. um Renee Zellweger is supposed to be 26. She's 27. They're all playing about the right age. I like that.
Jeff: Yeah, that's awesome. Um, Yeah, dude, I picked Renee Zellweger because... um Like, she was the...
Jeff: uh secret weapon to me like she was so um i don't want to say normal looking because that's pretty crappy But she's not like. in the movie she's not made up like look at her standing next to kelly preston
JT Spangler: She's dressed to be look like a Sammy. She's Renee Zellweger. She's 27. She's stunning, but she's dressed to look like a regular 27 year old in whatever, California.
Jeff: Right. Yes. Yeah, she looks like ah an accountant and... Um, She knows that. um Jerry's a good dude. and Like the mission statement, she followed that whole thing. And like.
Jeff: She knows that leaving the job was reckless and all of that stuff. And I feel like it all works because she figured all of that out in her head, in her mind before. jerry figures it out and uh dude she was just a great I know it was probably a gamble when they decided to choose her. To to be this...
Jeff: big of a part. But I thought she killed it.
JT Spangler: they She did a great job. I don't want to take away from it, but I looked at the list of people they... considered for this part. And it's Patricia Arquette, Kate Beckinsale, Bridget Fonda, Winona Ryder, Marissa Tomei, Cameron Diaz, Gwyneth Paltrow, Uma Thurman, Jennifer Lopez, Connie Britton.
Jeff: who
JT Spangler: Connie Britton and Renee Zellweger auditioned. Those are the two they were choosing between. But the other ones are ones they considered. And I'm like. At least six of those women could have done a very good job with this part.
Jeff: Right, right. No, they could have all done it. Yeah.
JT Spangler: I think I probably would have liked the movie just as much. and the alternative I saw for Marcy Tidwell was Janet Jackson. And I'm like, No disrespect to Janet Jackson, but she could not have done what Regina King did.
Jeff: No. No, she couldn't.
JT Spangler: this movie.
Jeff: Now you're right.
JT Spangler: But yeah, both of them were. Amazing. uh in this role And. Click. No complaints, man.
Jeff: Yeah. Um,
Jeff: I mean... it did The little kid was good.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Even Jerry O 'Connell played a good frigging the chubby kid from Stand By Me. Jerry O 'Connell. Um, Stamos.
JT Spangler: Kush.
Jeff: what What the hell's Romaine?
JT Spangler: Yeah. Right, Rebecca.
Jeff: Jerry O 'Connell Romaine. Um, I...
JT Spangler: well and like Not only that, but like... Jay Moore. Kelly Preston, Bonnie Hunt.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: but Frickin' Todd Luiso as the nanny? Haven't had time.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: ah I'm sorry, that one yet. um
Jeff: ah Dude, I... I didn't know Jay Moore was a real bad... a dirt bag. um I like him in a lot of the movies he's in. That movie Go and Pay It Forward.
JT Spangler: you too man Yeah.
Jeff: and All those movies, I remember him and I like him.
JT Spangler: ah Donald Logue, Eric Stoltz. Um, Beau Bridges.
Jeff: Yeah, it's Kush's dad.
JT Spangler: Cautious dad.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: A bunch of cameos. Um, Writer -director Cameron Crowe. He... He does Say Anything in 89. He does Singles in 92, Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
JT Spangler: in the early 80s. um This movie is based on Lee Steinberg. um who was a huge agent.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Um,
JT Spangler: And. Dude, I think this is my favorite. Cameron Crowe movie. this I mean, this and Almost Famous are the kind of runaway like choices. And I think I... I love both of those but I think I might like this one a little bit more.
Jeff: This one and which one?
JT Spangler: Almost famous.
Jeff: Oh yeah yeah yeah. Dude, so Lee Steinberg actually... Troy Aikman was one of his.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: clients. Warren Moon was one of his clients and Warren Moon was at the bachelor party.
JT Spangler: Yep.
Jeff: Drew Bledsoe Got a call from him in that scene that you were talking about. ah That's freaking great. I love that all those guys are in there too.
JT Spangler: And then after this, he does Almost Famous in 2000.
Jeff: um
JT Spangler: This is like, the those are the peaks. For Cameron Crowe, it's this one and then Almost Famous. And then he does Vanilla Sky, which I like. Here's Elizabeth Tappan, which I like.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: We bought a zoo, which I like, but he doesn't he doesn't get back to this level, really.
Jeff: right right dude Elizabethtown that's the one with um
JT Spangler: ah
JT Spangler: Orlando Bloom and
Jeff: ah kirstender ki Kirsten kirsten dunst yeah
JT Spangler: First he does.
Jeff: I like that one.
JT Spangler: I like that.
Jeff: yeah that one's a good one i need to watch that again
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: That's a good call.
JT Spangler: It's good dude. It's good stuff.
Jeff: i didn't want to say anything again that was
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: I don't want to buy or sell anything manufactured or processed. I don't want to process anything bought or sold. it kickboxing Sport of the future. um Yeah, dude, I like how it was built on that whole thing. And then somebody said like the mission statement.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: ah There's a guy from Disney that wrote like a... A memo? uh katzenberg i wrote a memo Uh,
JT Spangler: It was good. Katzenberg ran in a Pixar.
Jeff: Pixar, yeah.
JT Spangler: the
Jeff: And he... um Had this tiny... 28 -page manifesto that Was the real life inspiration for the. The thing that Tom Cruise wrote in the movie. I think that's great.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: that it was an actual thing. Um, Something else. There's one other person I saw, and I was shocked when I saw him. it was He played for the Saints, but he was also the quarterback. God, I'm blanking on this. I can picture his face.
Jeff: um he was He played for the Saints, but he also played for the Panthers. Ah.
JT Spangler: Take it home.
Jeff: uh, No no no no.
Jeff: It's coming to me. uh collins care carrie collins
JT Spangler: Cary Collins.
Jeff: And Cary Collins was in there. I was like, who's that guy's face? I know that guy's face. And I paused it on his face so I could remember it. um Kerry Collins.
Jeff: That's...
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Dustin of a classic.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Um,
JT Spangler: We will go back. way back.
Jeff: Yeah. ah Dude, also, did you know Paula Abdul helped ah Cuba Gooding Jr. with his touchdown dance? She helped. Corey, go with that.
JT Spangler: I did not. That's great.
Jeff: Um, Which is probably the most 1996 sentence you could possibly say out loud. um but I saw that I was reading about that. Um, Also, there's a Joni Mitchell song.
Jeff: ah That's called... Corp. Court. court And spark. And that's got the words, you complete me in there. And that's where Cameron Crowe got that.
JT Spangler: Nice.
Jeff: I like that.
JT Spangler: So in 2017, the NFL produced two. mockumentaries to commemorate the 20th anniversary of this movie they
Jeff: Nice.
JT Spangler: portray the careers of rod tidwell and frank cushman after the events of the film And Beau Bridges, Jay Moore, Jerry O 'Connell. And Aries Spears. reprise their roles.
Jeff: Oh, that's his brother. Yeah. yeah
JT Spangler: That's his brother. And like Shaq is in there and Roy Firestone. And and according to the mockumentary fake history, Rod, I mean. Cushman retires after only four years due to a severe case of athlete's foot.
Jeff: Dude, what's the movie where he... Oh, damn it. Remember, it's like a teen movie. Is it ah Can't Hardly Wait? Is he in that? What's the movie where... Jerry O 'Connell is like already in college, but he's hanging out with the.
Jeff: And he's like, dude. Biggest thing I could tell you. wear flip -flops in the shower. an athlete's foot all over your feet. It'll ruin your feet.
JT Spangler: um if Yeah, dude, is that um Can't Hardly Wait?
Jeff: Is it can't hardly wait? And he's like just constantly burping throughout the whole scene because he's just chugging beers. And he's already in college.
JT Spangler: Yeah. Can't hardly wait. Trip McNeely.
Jeff: sure really ah I wonder if that's why they gave him athlete's foot.
JT Spangler: Uh.
Jeff: That's all it's like the first thing I think of when I see that kid. It should be stand by me, but it's not. I think of just. Athlete's foot all over. Your feet.
JT Spangler: That's... ah That's ridiculous. All right.
Jeff: Oh, that's great.
JT Spangler: Um, Do you got any worst?
Jeff: Um, You know, my whole thing about it being long, but that's we we've already discussed that. ah Do you think that it was a good idea for Jerry to get married just so he could?
Jeff: Give her health insurance. Is that why he did that? I know he.
JT Spangler: i don't I read that that was the reason for the marriage, but when I watched the movie for the—
Jeff: It didn't feel like it, yeah.
JT Spangler: um I didn't think that was the reason. I thought the reason was that he just was incapable of being alone. and he didn't want.
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: her to leave because then he was going to be alone.
Jeff: which is what all those girls were saying on that video that montage and the thing he's like can
JT Spangler: uh
JT Spangler: recurrent theme in the movie.
Jeff: Right. right right right
JT Spangler: It was a horrible reason to get married. um
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: But I think that's like. hey uh they got married for all the wrong reasons but it actually kind of worked out because It really did.
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: Love each other.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Dude, also...
Jeff: I think he likes the kid too.
JT Spangler: Yeah, he loves the kid. And he thinks that she's pretty swell. um
Jeff: <unk> well
JT Spangler: the Or whatever she says when they're talking in the backyard. I was like, dude.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: His computer it work works in the backyard in 1996 because if you unplugged a laptop in those days, it had like three minutes of battery power. um And there's...
Jeff: Not mine. It ran out of diesel.
JT Spangler: ah Mine was steam powered. the I forgot to mention also in the best, the football was good in this.
Jeff: Yeah, it was. It was. Don't...
JT Spangler: Because...
Jeff: did Did you not?
JT Spangler: Part of the movie. We messed it up, but it was good.
Jeff: Did you not believe that Cooper Gooding Jr. could be wide receiver? Like when he's running the routes, even in the practices. I was like.
JT Spangler: Hit it. we're good
Jeff: I don't know if that's really him in that helmet, but.
JT Spangler: I don't know.
Jeff: He's...
JT Spangler: if it it But it was the football was good.
Jeff: Yeah, he was running good routes.
JT Spangler: And for a movie that the football is not that big a part of, I could easily see them Screwing that up in the.
Jeff: Phone in and in. Yeah. Just having.
JT Spangler: Shout out.
Jeff: Just having Keanu. be the quarterback.
JT Spangler: Bold tech, I love. As the beeper, we're in the beeper and cell phone era. Like he's got a cell phone.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: It doesn't ring. Just the beeper goes off. He's like, hang on a second. Hold on. Let me take this other device and punch this number in.
Jeff: Dude, there's... The fact that we are where we're at and we're still alive is staggering to me.
JT Spangler: Yeah. Dude, this is a good time for me to mention something. That is not. does not bear on this movie at all, but that I just wanted to talk to you about because my wife and I were talking about it. Like.
Jeff: Okay.
JT Spangler: Yeah. When we were in high school. and first going into college. Like. I had. a bank account. and had an atm card but no one took the atm card i had to go to an atm and extract cash so i had to do that.
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: And everyone knew which ATMs and in town you could take only five dollars out of instead of having to and and which ones had the lowest fees but Also, in addition to that.
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: If I didn't have the cash, I carried in my wallet. A checkbook?
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: That I can write people checks. Okay, I'll give them one of these people. And they gave me these.
Jeff: Yeah. I wrote on there.
JT Spangler: so i really
Jeff: How much money I wish I had.
JT Spangler: I wish I had. And I was like, dude, everybody was carrying around checkbooks. We were 16. We had a checkbook in our back pocket. and Had the frickin
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: carbon copies so I can see all the places that I had written checks.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: yeah like Exxon, $3 .45. That was a great one. Like...
Jeff: I'm going to write a check for this taco. ah Dude, I don't...
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: um I don't know why. I can remember, too. getting my debit card and going like. Well, this doesn't look like a regular credit card.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: It's very plain on the front. It was just like blue and it said like Hancock Bank on it. There was no other like. what's that thing called where you look at it and it makes, it's like silver and it makes the picture.
JT Spangler: All right, Graham.
Jeff: Yeah. The hologram. Thank you. um It didn't have any of that. It was just plain. And that's because you could only use it in ATM.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: That's so stupid. What were that? I don't, dude, I don't, get for reals.
JT Spangler: who on the The crazy thing about that is like, it sounds like we're talking about when we used to ride a dinosaur to school, but the reality is in like. The 90s were like, dude, this is amazing because our parents had to actually go to the bank and stand in line and go, can I please me can have some of my money?
Jeff: Yeah. Right.
JT Spangler: Or like if they happen to have a credit card, which they probably didn't. ah They would go like. I give you the credit card, and they would go, cha -chunk. and
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: So like.
Jeff: and that was at the end dude that And that was at the end of the day. Dude, working at Eckerd. First of all, there was nothing to scan, right? So you would bring it up, whatever sticker was on there. How the hell do I know how much?
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: uh, uh, enema costs so i'm just like punching in 1 .59 enter and then i say okay that's how much it is they hand me a card i have to swipe it then i have to look to make sure the carbon copy copied correctly
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Then I got to write down how much it was. They would sign that. I would give them part of it and drop it. And they wouldn't call that into the bank until the end of the month.
JT Spangler: Yeah, dude So I like it.
Jeff: That's...
JT Spangler: We just, we just. Wendy and I just got on the topic of like what we were doing for money in the like mid 90s. And I was like, we I just had a check i had a checkbook that that I was sitting on all day.
Jeff: Hold it. Just.
JT Spangler: And then I had to have a pen with it. That I would.
Jeff: It is.
JT Spangler: like Here's the, which I had.
Jeff: Yes.
JT Spangler: What do we do how or now?
Jeff: So stupid.
JT Spangler: Is this okay?
Jeff: i don't do that and again like what about when you got the debit card So you could spend stuff. but it didn't come out right away.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: It wasn't connected to your thing ah right away. So you would spend that whole night. And then you'd look at your balance right before you went to Denny's and you would go like. shit, I got $39 left in there.
Jeff: Let's go to Denny's. And it turns out that $39 is long gone and you spend more at Denny's.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: And yeah, dude, it's just bad news.
JT Spangler: But also the amazing thing about that is that you couldn't check the balance without physically bringing yourself to the bank, putting your card in the machine, typing in.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: and have it.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: the thing that said how much money you had.
Jeff: And even that was behind because those debits hadn't gone through yet.
JT Spangler: Yeah, someone had to get in a gas -powered vehicle and drive them to the bank and drop them off.
Jeff: Or what about ah going to like Harrah's with Johnny and it was like an $8 fee to take money out of the ATM and he would be like, all right, only $20 this time and that's it.
JT Spangler: It was just...
JT Spangler: Hmm.
Jeff: And then he would go back and get another $20. I'm like, dude, just take $100.
JT Spangler: And every time. Thanks, folks. Yeah, that was... Uh...
Jeff: That's so stupid
JT Spangler: Amazing. Yeah, but that has no bearing on this movie. i just We're at the end of the episode, anyone who's still listening.
Jeff: Yeah. hu
JT Spangler: Probably need to use that time. Um,
Jeff: it's it Dude, it's old it's old tech. It's all tech.
JT Spangler: It's... Super old tech. Five questions.
Jeff: J -
JT Spangler: is this
Jeff: Wait, wait, I did have one more old tech. I just saw it. When he goes to the copy mat, he has to actually physically go to a place and say like.
JT Spangler: Go ahead.
JT Spangler: Yes.
Jeff: Make me a copy of that. Like he types it on like sub stack or whatever. And.
JT Spangler: You're doing quite well. word processor. And then he...
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: He takes it on a... floppy disk to the 24 hour FedEx.
Jeff: Floppy disk.
JT Spangler: And the FedEx guy prints it up.
Jeff: my My students don't know what floppy disks are, but when I tell them to save, they can find the icon with no problem. I'm like, what do you think you're clicking on?
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: One kid goes, what is that, a house? I was like, what why would that be the save button?
JT Spangler: so
Jeff: Oh, man. All right.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Um, Five questions. um
JT Spangler: Is it okay? It's R -rated.
Jeff: I did. Yeah, it's R -rated.
JT Spangler: God bless you
Jeff: um
JT Spangler: Some boobs.
Jeff: Cooper Gooding Jr. naked in the locker room. Kelly Preston's got him swinging both counterclockwise.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Clockwise, clockwise, they were going clockwise.
JT Spangler: Bye -bye.
Jeff: Um, so Dude, again, Jake was sitting there. He's 14. ah That made it super awkward, probably because I had one finger in my mouth and I was staring right at him. The whole time it was happening, but.
Jeff: ah Dude, it was, I don't know. It was, I would say maybe 15 -ish.
JT Spangler: Yes.
Jeff: Probably.
JT Spangler: That's...
Jeff: It's fine.
JT Spangler: What about the age I was when I saw this?
Jeff: Don't you think it'd probably be more relatable, though, as they get older?
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Yeah. Yeah.
JT Spangler: Yeah, I mean, it is like... I mean, it's a comedy, but it is if you don't care about the romance, which like if Until you're a certain age, until you have a hair on your balls, you're probably not gonna. Oh.
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: or on your woman parts so like you just like you Got to be a certain age to care about the fact that this is.
Jeff: ah You got to have hair on your jiggly bits.
JT Spangler: You can clean me.
Jeff: um I feel like we're doing this a lot, though. Like every time we talk about that, we're like, yeah, yeah, you could be this age and watch it, but you probably won't like it until you're this age. I find like that our rating is a lot of that.
JT Spangler: Well, dude, I really want to show my kid. the original Star Wars. I can. He's just not going to get it. so like
Jeff: Yeah, he's exactly like, yeah.
JT Spangler: There's no point.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: I don't think it would be scarring to him, but i like...
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: ah He just isn't going to understand it for like another five years.
Jeff: Yeah, agreed.
JT Spangler: Would this movie get made if it were pitched now? i mean If Tom Cruise wants to make it, he's making it.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: uh i don't know I don't know if who else. It's just as relevant. Agents are just as scummy. Wide receivers are just as loud. and people still.
Jeff: Yeah, it's I was going to say it could have been filmed this year. with no problem.
JT Spangler: And you can definitely get married for health insurance. That is still a thing that people care about.
Jeff: That is... for sure a thing, although you don't really want the health insurance here.
JT Spangler: No.
Jeff: in America.
JT Spangler: you You also don't want to not have it.
Jeff: Yeah, no, you don't want that either.
JT Spangler: All right. Yeah, everybody's going to die, but at least you died on a mattress.
JT Spangler: Hmm.
Jeff: Oh, man. ah Dude, um I started thinking, too. ah We could do this with a college player. Now with NIL, they have agents.
JT Spangler: Absolutely.
