JT Spangler: new client, first thing I ask is You been saving up for a rainy day? Guess what? It's romance. your job is just I'm looking to see. I am innocent. Exactly how I want you to look. the truth. I don't think he did it. I know what he did to you

JT Spangler: here fear lady our Special sneak preview, Saturday, March 30th at 7 a .m. theaters.

Jeff: What movie are we doing now?

JT Spangler: Primal fear.

Jeff: Yeah. Ugh.

JT Spangler: Is that the one you watched?

Jeff: Ah yes. Yeah, that's... good Yeah, that's the one I watched for the first time. Dude, I thought this was is another movie. You know what I thought this was? I thought it was the Mark Wahlberg movie with Reese Witherspoon.

JT Spangler: Do you think it was Cape Fear? Wait, what's what's the mark?

Jeff: No, no. that

JT Spangler: All right.

Jeff: That's just called fear.

JT Spangler: Oh, just fear?

Jeff: And it's from 96. I'm glad I didn't watch that one. I'm glad I typed primal fear in my notes to do the next movie.

JT Spangler: i don't know What? movie you're talking about.

Jeff: Ugh.

JT Spangler: um like but Was Mark Wahlberg election or whatever?

Jeff: Ah.

JT Spangler: Reese Witherspoon movie?

Jeff: Uh...

JT Spangler: It's about to come out.

Jeff: No, this is... i Dude, I had this on DVD. The cover's like him and she's laying on... and on his chest and it's all black behind him and i was like oh This is the one I want to watch.

JT Spangler: Yeah, yeah. I remember that.

Jeff: Yeah, it's a psychological thriller. And we talked about doing. Primal Fear, the psychological thriller. Cape Fear. That's something different. We missed that one. That was 90. Two or something.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: early.

JT Spangler: I. I don't No, if I saw this. Either. Um, Oh, yeah, Just just Fear from 1996, Mark Wahlberg.

Jeff: Right. Yeah, yeah. That's what I thought we were doing.

JT Spangler: This is great. This is good that neither of us knew. That this was the movie we were doing

Jeff: ah

JT Spangler: Go ahead. We're idiots. Two minutes in, I already would. If I was listening. Right to the next podcast.

Jeff: Yeah, no, no, this is going to get better.

JT Spangler: Dude. You know, I thought this one was scary because the name of it is Primal Fear. And even in the trailer, it's just like a giant bloody butcher knife like jacking across the screen as they.

Jeff: now Yeah.

JT Spangler: didn' cut from one scene to the other.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: It's not that scary.

Jeff: No, it's not. It's not that scary.

JT Spangler: I was like watching it during the daytime with all the curtains open. I was just like ki with my head on a swivel. And I was like, this is not. That's Gary.

Jeff: Yeah. It's not that kind of scary.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: Um, it's ah It's definitely a...

JT Spangler: It's a thriller.

Jeff: It could be scary, though. Yeah, it's it could be ah like, oh, no.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: This is real people who are like this. It's terrifying.

JT Spangler: Dude. But... Totally unrealistic. Like a Catholic bishop would be taking advantage of kids?

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: I don't buy that for a second.

Jeff: Yeah, that's ah that doesn't happen.

JT Spangler: that's it

Jeff: No, that doesn't happen.

JT Spangler: Pure fiction.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: Especially in 1996.

Jeff: ah Yeah, we I'm glad we get to talk about that too.

JT Spangler: Yeah. I was an altar boy, and if you're wondering, no. I wasn't.

Jeff: I think it's because they knew I was bad at blowing out candles. so

JT Spangler: I knew I couldn't keep my mouth shut.

Jeff: but

JT Spangler: Uh huh.

Jeff: Amen.

JT Spangler: We went to Catholic school for a lot of years. That's why we could make those jokes.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: uh, Primal Fear, Richard Gere. Edward Norton in his first movie role.

Jeff: First ever.

JT Spangler: Brown. More to your knee, Laura Linney.

Jeff: Dude. Stacked cast.

JT Spangler: The dad from Frasier. I did really good. Cast.

Jeff: Yeah. Um, And if you go into this movie not knowing anything about it. delightful.

JT Spangler: Yeah. It's a good time.

Jeff: Cause I didn't.

JT Spangler: I would...

Jeff: I didn't. Did you know anything about it? Like you knew? Oh, this is a movie with a twist or anything like that.

JT Spangler: i didn't know there was a twist i knew that everyone loved edward norton in this movie

Jeff: No.

Jeff: That's all I knew too. Okay.

JT Spangler: Because I remember I'd seen people talk about like in interviews and stuff, people like, oh, man, Edward Norton, that he was so good in Primal Fear.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: I can't even believe it. So I knew and ah and he just.

Jeff: Right.

JT Spangler: And at the beginning of the movie, he gets arrested and he's just like stuttering. I was like, he's just stuttering. This is not.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: That's that. card. um So as I knew there was...

Jeff: big Big deal radio. We got it.

JT Spangler: Yeah, exactly. You never go full. ah and So I knew there was more coming, but I didn't know. I mean, I kind of guessed that the twist was going to be something like...

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: It was, but then there was.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: and twist and that one I was not ready for.

Jeff: Right. Yeah, i liked I liked the fact that there's a twist. And I know it's 30 years ago, but just... The person that I am doesn't like when...

Jeff: I spoil stuff for somebody because I like sharing things so much. um

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: But we're going to have to spoil it to talk about it. And again, it's 30 years. We always talk about that.

JT Spangler: We're in year six of the podcast. we're If we're going to talk openly about movies, that if... They were people. they would have to use a heating pad for their back.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: Like, it's fine.

Jeff: But ah we made it this far without actually seeing the movie. So if you're listening to this and want the twist, you should wait and go watch it and listen to this after.

JT Spangler: I'm trying to imagine the person who's to do pile has got 1996 movies. They're like, I'll get to that any day now. I'm going to be, I can't believe they said the.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: What jerks.

Jeff: it's ah It's on my to -do pile, but only because it's forced because of the podcast. i Dude, would you have ever watched this?

JT Spangler: No.

Jeff: Like you thought it was scary.

JT Spangler: Never.

Jeff: I thought it was, yeah, I'm not.

JT Spangler: Network.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: I thought it was scary.

Jeff: Never to me.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: Yeah. Yeah.

JT Spangler: And ah even the even the poster is just like Richard Gere in a trench coat, like standing on like a black and white street with like angel wings behind him. I don't know what... What is that supposed to signify?

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: um

Jeff: no i dude i'm totally with you on that

JT Spangler: they look like It's like going to be fighting the forces of the devil. um So yeah.

Jeff: He kind of was.

JT Spangler: A little bit.

Jeff: He kind of was.

JT Spangler: But yeah, dude. This is a... Give us a synopsis.

Jeff: All right Martin Vale. That is played by ah Richard Gere. He's a high profile defense attorney. ah who loves being on TV and having his face out there and takes on the impossible case of an altar boy.

Jeff: uh named aaron stampler stampler that's what i put this is yeah stampler um

JT Spangler: Yeah. Stay blessed.

Jeff: And he's found covered in blood after a Catholic archbishop was killed. And he thinks he's scoring free press and he has to try to. Uh, Free him. from being.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: Put in jail.

JT Spangler: Yeah, everyone thinks everyone thinks that Aaron Stampler, played by Edward Norton. Did it. It's open and shut. Just bringing some crack on. Let's get out of here. and

Jeff: Open and shut, Case Johnson.

JT Spangler: Apparently he broke in and hung up pictures of his family everywhere. Oh, I saw this once when I was a rookie. Uh,

Jeff: Not yet.

JT Spangler: Yeah, dude and um from First of all, I don't like... that If you're 20, you shouldn't be able to call yourself an altar boy. You should get a better title. Like Altered Man.

Jeff: Ultraman.

JT Spangler: Yeah. assistant to the priest.

Jeff: I don't know if that's...

JT Spangler: I don't, whatever, something different.

Jeff: Yeah. Deacon? yeah Yeah, I don't know. Um, I... Dude... I know we we've already said how good Ed Norton was, but...

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: Just thinking about it while I was talking about that, like this is his first movie.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: And he walks in and fools Richard Gere, fools Francis McDormand.

JT Spangler: Everybody.

Jeff: Fools the judge.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: Fools me. Freaking wins a Golden Globe. guy He killed it on this.

JT Spangler: Yeah, Richard Gere said that he was about to quit. the movie before because they couldn't find the part that couldn't find the aaron stampler parties like we brought in every young actor He's like, and it was easy to play the angry, scary guy, but none of them could also be like the convincingly.

Jeff: Yeah, no.

JT Spangler: Sweet and innocent guy. And then we had, you know, we were someone They did an open call in New York and someone called me like, we found this guy in New York. His name's Ed. like ah And it's great.

JT Spangler: Let's meet him. Let's fly him out. And they fly him out. And.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: Gear reads them. And then they. tape him, they do a screen test and they're like, hes sta he did great. It's like, oh, man, this kid's fantastic. What's he done? Nothing.

Jeff: Nothing.

JT Spangler: Which who it's just probably... And so Richard gear was like, well, let's do another one. Let's do another screen test. Maybe he just got lucky. And he's like, the second one was even better. And so like we cast him and it was great.

Jeff: That's awesome.

JT Spangler: but And DiCaprio had been offered this and turned it down. And so Edward Norton was just doing theater at the time. He's 19 or 20 or I don't know. This character was that old. Maybe he's older.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: But he's not he's not done any, this is his first film.

Jeff: First of many.

JT Spangler: Yeah. Peace. He's 27 at the time, so he's not.

Jeff: Nice.

JT Spangler: 19. Still, he's not done me. film work.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: And he gets the part because they couldn't find anyone else to play it, and he's freaking...

Jeff: when When you think Ed Norton... I mean... I probably will start thinking of this movie too now that I've seen it.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: What do you think of when you think of Ed Norton?

JT Spangler: I always think of. um Fight Club. first.

Jeff: ah See, mine's Fight Club and then Rounders.

JT Spangler: And then I. And then I think of Rounders, which is not his most famous role, but it's just one of my favorite movies.

Jeff: Yeah. Dude, it's so good. Yeah.

JT Spangler: And I think most people probably think American History X, but I didn't. watch that much.

Jeff: Yeah. Yeah.

JT Spangler: Freaking weird.

Jeff: No, I saw it once. That was good enough.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: Amen. Um.

JT Spangler: Yeah, dude, for his first first his first role, he wins the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor. He gets Oscar nominated for that. He gets a BAFTA nomination for that.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: like he's Everyone's like, dude, this guy Edward Norton's really good at acting.

Jeff: Yeah. And he is. So... we'll We'll talk about it when we get to awards. I'll let you do budget first. i have a question for you

JT Spangler: Yeah, $30 million. dollar Budget. uh I think most of which probably went towards ties. It's a lawyer movie. Everyone's dressed real fancy. $102 million dollars gross. Number 28.

JT Spangler: on the year right ahead of. 10 cup. uh jerry shepard with a seven well roy never even occurred to me to try

Jeff: Nice! Not bad. what a great Dude, that was a fun podcast too. If you haven't listened to that one, go back and listen to it.

JT Spangler: I freaking love 10 cup.

Jeff: Yeah, it's good.

JT Spangler: and um Is that the one where we talked to? ah

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: Ron Schelt.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: the director

Jeff: Yeah. yeah

JT Spangler: Amen. So anyway, $102 million dollars for an R -rated thriller.

Jeff: That was great.

JT Spangler: starring Richard Gere and a bunch of people no one's ever heard of is Really impressive.

Jeff: Uh, I saw a thing where it opened at number one.

JT Spangler: So.

Jeff: With $10 million. dollars

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: um then i just saw that uh the tom cruise movie we were just talking about the new one a digger

JT Spangler: Mission impossible. Oh, yeah, dear.

Jeff: digger. When Digger came out, they're like, well, it's a flop. It only made $10 million. dollars

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: And this is number one. That shows you how big of a difference it is. from

JT Spangler: Well, the difference is that they spent $180 million dollars on Digger and they spent $30 million on this.

Jeff: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I could see that. 30 million, that's more than just Tom Cruise makes. Um,

JT Spangler: Yeah, and dude, I mean, also, this is our this is an R -rated thriller, and Digger is supposed to be, like, Tom Cruise doesn't do R -rated movies.

Jeff: Right.

JT Spangler: He's doing... Everyone take your kids to see this movie and then buy the merch.

Jeff: Yeah. Yeah.

JT Spangler: Yeah. Give us the awards. There's a bunch for Edward Norton.

Jeff: ah Yeah, yeah. he won the Ed Norton, this is his section, won the Golden Globe Best Supporting Actor, nominated for an Academy, nominated for BAFTA. A bunch of the critics groups all gave him thumbs up. My question to you is we've already done.

Jeff: the Best Supporting Actor Oscar winner with Cuba Gooding Jr.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: ah Now that you've seen this. do you switch them Does... Does Ed Norton, should he have gotten it over Cooper getting Junior's role in... What you call it? The other Tom Cruise movie?

JT Spangler: Jerry Maguire. I...

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: I think most people would probably say yes, but I'd love. jerry maguire and i we almost you never get a comedy Back.

Jeff: Right.

JT Spangler: like to win an Oscar.

Jeff: Buh.

JT Spangler: And I love.

Jeff: that's the Yes. So that's the only reason I said two, because in my answer under there, after I wrote the question, I was like.

JT Spangler: I love Rod Kiffin.

Jeff: Yeah, but you never see that.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: You got to pull for that.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: So yeah, I don't give it to him either. Just wondering just wonder where he stood.

JT Spangler: Yeah, no i'm I'm with you, man. I think Cuba Gooding Jr. is the right answer for... For 96.

Jeff: Yeah. Um, Did you see the books? For sequels and spinoffs?

JT Spangler: I was looking at. I was looking at the books. Yeah, this was a novel in like 92, 93. And then there there are two novels.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: Subsequent to this with the same. Marty and Aaron Stampler characters and them.

Jeff: Yeah, because he gets out. Because you know he's only going to be in there for 30 days or whatever it says.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: and then Dude. I kind of want to read those and I might try to find them. um

JT Spangler: I always like to read the book.

Jeff: On Hoopla.

JT Spangler: I don't know if I'll read the sequels, but yeah, I might see if I can get those on Libby. Download those, bad boys.

Jeff: Yeah. I might check them out. The Vale Stampler Trilogy.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: um

JT Spangler: yeah Dude, I don't think I ever saw this at all

Jeff: No, I definitely didn't Dude, I'm telling you.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: I was like, where the fuck's Mark Wahlberg? What is this?

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: um I was I was wrong. i The first time I saw it was... yesterday And I watched it on Pluto. Let me tell you. I think I might have.

Jeff: Plexoriasis because every ad in the middle of this movie, it took me three hours to watch it because of the ads, but that was okay.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: Um,

JT Spangler: Plaxorize.

Jeff: Also,

JT Spangler: a frequent urination.

Jeff: Yeah, dude, they were hitting me with all those ads. ah But first time I saw it was yesterday, so that I didn't rent this. Didn't see it in the theater. I missed it. I wasn't in that first $10 million weekend.

Jeff: Where do you rate it though?

JT Spangler: Yeah, I... um Honestly, man, I was... i was First of all, I was delighted that it wasn't scary because I was mentally prepared. for it to be scary.

JT Spangler: Um,

Jeff: Ugh. Yeah.

JT Spangler: And the cast, like you were saying is so good.

Jeff: Mm -hmm.

JT Spangler: More teary, Andre Brouwer. Richard Gere, Edward Norton, Laura Linney. Nor... Norm Macdonald, the dad from Frazier. whatever. It's a bunch of great people in this.

Jeff: John Mahoney, yeah.

JT Spangler: John Mahoney. du i love that guy.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: Um, It's about two hours long. There's definitely some subplots I could take out.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: But... I thought it was fantastic. I get why everyone talks about this part for Ed Norton being so incredible and his performance being so incredible.

Jeff: Mm hmm.

JT Spangler: Um... I gave it an eight and a half. It wasn't quite a nine.

Jeff: Yeah. Alright.

JT Spangler: Mainly because... And because how bad the legal stuff is.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: I was like watching the. i'm I'm not a lawyer. I didn't go to law school, but I was watching the court and I was like, that's not how that works. And then I found YouTube videos because lawyers are like.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: Lawyers talk about this courtroom drama. They're like, that's not how this works. I was like, see, I... Knew it. $200.

Jeff: like when we watched heat and they were like yeah the navy seals still show this This is what they show in law school to show you what doesn't happen.

JT Spangler: That's right.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

JT Spangler: Yeah. Well, even like my cousin Vinny, like that's the most realistic. Law. courtroom ever captured on film and this one's like that's not how any this works

Jeff: Yeah, it doesn't work like that at all.

JT Spangler: um But yeah, I gave it and a half.

Jeff: And it's...

JT Spangler: Pleasantly subscribe!

Jeff: So the whole time I'm watching it, I'm like, well, this is kind of landing in the sevens for me. It's all right. It's pretty good. I like this. I don't know where it's going. And, you know, after watching so many thrillers and so many different. Joseph Campbell story arcs of the hero's journey. I can almost tell where it's going to end up.

Jeff: And... I don't always get it exactly right, but I'm like, huh? That was alright. I figured it out. ah So it was in the sevens the whole time. I'm like, do I go in eight or do I go at six and a half? And then the twist happens.

Jeff: I gave it an eight and a half also. so That was delightful.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: And the only thing I took off was. a the real estate subplot, which I know they needed, but it was weird. ah that it was in there the way it was.

Jeff: i

JT Spangler: That's the one that I had, and I feel like they, number one, didn't need it, and number two, just like... Tried to adapt it from the book. Maybe it was a big part of the book, but in the movie, I'm like, we could have done away.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: with that entirely.

Jeff: Right.

JT Spangler: We didn't need any of that.

Jeff: Yeah. um

JT Spangler: And then we... 15 minutes back.

Jeff: Yeah. had That was the only part that I put that I didn't want. I gave it an eight and a half also. I did. I loved it. it was It was fun.

JT Spangler: Yeah. Yeah, and like Edward Norton gets all the praise for this, especially because it's his first role. but I thought Richard Gere was fantastic in this.

Jeff: Right.

Jeff: Dude, he was way good. well So here's my question. I went back and watched during my off hour today. I pulled up some clips so I could watch it and make sure I had the things that I wanted to say down.

Jeff: And on the second time watching it. watching Ed Norton like. Every time he stutters, like I was like, oh, snap. He's like. he's acting in the movie as an actor, but he's also acting as the character as acting.

Jeff: I was like, that's doing a good job.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: Like ah for reals can tell. Why he won what he won. He was killer.

JT Spangler: Yeah, man Well,

Jeff: Second time.

JT Spangler: I saw... um Matt Damon has said in a couple of different interviews that this he was like. one of the finalists for this role. According to him, I didn't see anyone else say that, but...

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: He said that he and. ah Ben Affleck, like this was one of the main reasons that they wrote Good Will Hunting because they were like. after this movie happened, it was like, there's just they're just... First of all, there aren't going to be that many parts like that.

Jeff: Right.

JT Spangler: He's like, and second of all, when there are, they're going to offer them to everybody who is anybody. And then if that.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: If that doesn't work, then they're going to go down to like. the masses. And then we're got like, then us and 3000 of our closest friends are going to be fighting over it. And then maybe one of us will get to do it.

Jeff: Right.

JT Spangler: he's like So we got to, we just got to write our own thing.

Jeff: Yeah, got to do it themselves, right.

JT Spangler: And they literally wrote, as Matt Damon says that we we we wrote our movie because we didn't think there would be any more primal fear Edward Norton parts coming down. And if there were, we probably wouldn't get them.

Jeff: That's awesome.

JT Spangler: Which is kind of like the John, I mean, John Favreau didn't talk about primal fear, but he did say like, if we want a really good movie. part for us. We're going to have to just go and write it.

Jeff: Got to do it yourself. Do the rap and the trap, triple -double -no assists. Um, Dude, i I like that idea. of

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: Write your own stuff.

JT Spangler: How about that?

Jeff: Yeah

JT Spangler: ah Top. Best scenes, best three scenes. The first one for me was when... ah Richard Gere, the defense attorney, is arguing with Laura Linney. The prosecutor in the bar, they're just like.

JT Spangler: it's just like in a few good men they all the lawyers go to the same bar and just talk about the case

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: I feel like you're not supposed to do that, but they all do.

Jeff: I know. Everybody around him can hear. Um, I do like that too, though. Do you think... um Cause like, you know, obviously they had a history together.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: And he doesn't want to give away too much, but he gives her some information and she does the same thing. That's weird to me. I feel like it would want I would want to be. You know, I don't want to be my cousin Vinny going hunting with that guy wearing slacks. shooting the deer because i don't want to like give away you know what i'm saying like i don't

JT Spangler: It seems like the like the and again, not a lawyer. You're also not a lawyer. Maybe this is exactly how it works.

Jeff: Not even close.

JT Spangler: But it seemed like there's a lot of like. behind the scenes gamesmanship between the prosecutor and the defense attorney because he's going like, hey, you know, if you go for the death penalty and you don't get it, you're going to get fired. Maybe you should probably just plead this down. That's what I would do.

JT Spangler: And she's like, I'm not putting it down.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: You shut the hell up. And she's like, you don't even have a motive. And she's like, I got a motive. It's what is it? She's like. None of your business.

Jeff: Well, I'm not gonna. Yeah. I don't know. i would I would be so scared that... I would say the wrong thing and give away my whole thing. i don't I don't want to...

JT Spangler: I'm just trying to imagine like NFL coaches the night before a game going out together and all getting drunk. And talking shit to each other about like, oh, yeah, if you run the option, we're just going to run this. Like, it seems like that would be really risky.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: Like, shouldn't you?

Jeff: Yeah, that's what I'm saying. i don't

JT Spangler: On game day, don't you want them to be surprised? like a why

Jeff: Right.

JT Spangler: um and

Jeff: I mean, they still like they still surprise each other.

JT Spangler: Yeah, they do. And I know they...

Jeff: So...

JT Spangler: were together at the prosecutor's office but like they could have all come through from the friggin you know. whatever his name. coaching tree like I don't it just seems weird to me

Jeff: The old Belichick.

JT Spangler: Yeah, so i they all worked on Nick Saban's staff. I don't know.

Jeff: who

JT Spangler: Um. Yeah, I like that one. What's your first scene?

Jeff: ah Dude, mine's the first time Roy appears to Martin.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: Vale. The first time he... His... ah bad alter ego shows up to his lawyer. um

JT Spangler: I wrote that in my notes as the scene where Edward Norton wins the Golden Globe.

Jeff: Yeah, absolutely. that's So that's the first one I thought of to write down. And then when I went back and watched it, I was like...

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: oh snap he's he's freaking killing it like because you know he's like slides the table out he's like come on just me and you and he's like really close And it.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: Dude, it just comes out. And the whole time he's like stopping the doctor from coming back in. He's like. holding up his hand like, no, don't come in. i Dude. He just switches and it's good.

Jeff: Um,

JT Spangler: Well... like the

Jeff: Hi.

JT Spangler: The physicality of Edward Norton is... is really something man because he's not he doesn't look like he looks like a skinny guy and it can be kind of like unassuming But he's like six foot six one. And so like in this movie. And in Fight Club.

JT Spangler: He can be that like, oh, he's like the little office. He's got the short sleeve button down. He's like pushing the mail cart. And these.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: beating the shit out of people. And like.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: He can do both. And then American history, he's like playing a badass neo -Nazi the whole time.

Jeff: Yeah. Right. right right right right

JT Spangler: But like in these movies. Fight Club and this one. Like he's like, oh, he's just. Totally sweet. Skinny's like, oh, he's beating the shit out of that guy.

Jeff: Like... when i went back i was like all right well we know like you can tell he changes because his demeanor changes he starts like he puts his head down and looks past his eyebrows and like He's trying to look more menacing.

Jeff: But i was trying to when I went back, I was like, was there a musical cue or like... Other than him changing physically from being like. shrunken down like you said low shoulders head slumped down to chest out and like Assertive.

Jeff: Judy. They didn't need any kind of. Like the lighting didn't change. Like he just switched it.

JT Spangler: I don't think they tipped it. They didn't tip it with music. They didn't tip it with uh It was all in his performance.

Jeff: They didn't God, he freaking he killed it that and that whole time You don't know what's going to happen. I was like, oh, snap. He's about to kill his frigging lawyer.

Jeff: Oh my God. And he's like stopping the doctor from coming in and she's trying to get in the whole time. Dude. It was good. That was my first scene.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: It's fantastic.

JT Spangler: That was my second scene, but that I literally wrote it in my notes, the one where Edward Norton wins the Golden Globe.

Jeff: Absolutely.

JT Spangler: um What's your second scene?

Jeff: ah My second scene is when Roy comes back after Laura Linney does the same thing. She starts, he, Richard Gere sets it up. and gets him going. And then...

Jeff: you know, for the cross, ah what's it called?

JT Spangler: In the courtroom, he's... He's put.

Jeff: Cross -examination.

JT Spangler: you put Aaron Stampler on the stand, Richard Gearhat.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: asking him questions and he's being all stuttering and he's being all Aaron Stamper and Richard Gere's trying to provoke him.

Jeff: Right.

JT Spangler: So that boy will come out.

Jeff: Right.

JT Spangler: And then. But then he has Laura Linney, the prosecutor, do it instead. and He loses his shit. He like jumps over the rail and he's a got her in a headlock. He's like yelling at the judge.

Jeff: Dude.

JT Spangler: He punches Richard Gere.

Jeff: I was not ready for any of that I knew he was going to turn. ah You could tell that's what was happening.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: But God, I didn't know he was going to jump over and like hold her in the. Freaking headlock. and

JT Spangler: I didn't know he was going to come over the railing like Monday Night Raw, but I did know.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: he About to lose his shit.

Jeff: um I like how ah Richard Gere just set her up when she did her cross -examination.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: She was pushing and pushing and pushing. um But physically attacked. that was I didn't see that coming. that was That was awesome.

JT Spangler: Yeah, I didn't have that

Jeff: So I put that for my second one.

JT Spangler: I didn't have that scene. my um My last scene was right. After that. the final scene of the movie when And Richard Gere goes to talk to Edward Norton and it's, he's like, Hey man, he's like, you know, we, we did it.

Jeff: That's my third.

JT Spangler: We got off and he's being Aaron Stampler and he's all stuttering. And then. He reveals. Like, hey, tell. whatever her name is. I'm sorry about her neck. I didn't. Oh, she's not. Hurting.

Jeff: Yeah, hope her neck is okay. Yeah, yeah.

JT Spangler: And if you read... Richard Gere's Martin Vale's walking away and he realizes he's like. he didn't He blacked out. Every time he was Roy, he was Aaron was supposed to have been blacked out.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: He's not supposed to remember any of that.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: dude He goes back and he's like, you... And dude, he just freaking flips it. He's like, he's like. Congratulations, Marty. You finally figured it out. I i really wanted to tell you, but I just i couldn't decide if I should.

JT Spangler: And dude. you should just

Jeff: And when he says, dude, when he says, so wait, there never was a Roy. and Dude, Ed Norton's like, actually, there never was an errand, counselor.

JT Spangler: Yeah, that's my friend.

Jeff: Dude.

JT Spangler: That was my first quote. There never was an air.

Jeff: Dude, that's mine too!

JT Spangler: He goes, good

Jeff: Dude, that shit was so good.

JT Spangler: Because it's like, Marty, if that's really what you think, he's like, I'm really disappointed in you. I thought we were. I thought we were really working together. He's like, there never was an Aaron counselor. Uh,

Jeff: man

JT Spangler: Everybody should watch, even if you haven't seen the movie or if you've seen it and you don't remember, you should just go watch that clip.

Jeff: Yeah, the last part.

JT Spangler: on youtube

Jeff: God.

JT Spangler: It's like two minutes. It's fantastic.

Jeff: That friggin... Five or six words. That's that just... That changed the whole movie from a... Was it going to be a seven to to an eight and a half for me? That that was great.

Jeff: That was great.

JT Spangler: Yes, fantastic. And then it's also, I think, is a really... fun. interesting, cool way to end the movie. Cause Richard gear just walks out onto the sidewalk. It's just like standing there and it's like a crane shot. And he's, you could tell he's just going like, what the fuck? It's good.

Jeff: Yeah, the whole time he was like, so now what do I do? do i like what does what Does he have any recourse? I know i know everybody's going to say read the second book, but I'm saying like...

JT Spangler: No, no, he doesn't.

Jeff: What? what There's no, like... i don't know what double jeopardy laws really are but i'm saying like like can you go like, hey, it turns out I found out that he was lying the whole time.

JT Spangler: Yeah. Well, if I know anything from 1997's Liar Liar, that's not how it works.

Jeff: Thank you.

JT Spangler: It's like, judge, I think we made a mistake. It's just a technicality just because you bought it.

Jeff: I don't. Oh, God. I don't.

JT Spangler: He's he's to go he's going to go to the psychiatric hospital and he's going to answer questions for 30 days and he's going to be out on the street and then we'll go to book two

Jeff: I don't even know what he would do.

Jeff: Okay. and Dude, if ah i'll I'm going to try to find it. I'm excited now I want to find out what happens.

JT Spangler: i I also, I guess we could talk about it in the worst, but I'm also like, can the judge just decide like.

Jeff: No.

JT Spangler: I'm just gonna send the jury home. I'm gonna make a decision. Cool, cool, cool. All right, I'm out of here. like i didn't think that was how the legal system worked.

Jeff: ah Yeah, and I don't think you can just go like, all right, and we'll let him be crazy now, even though you messed that up.

JT Spangler: Yes, dude.

Jeff: Like that would be.

JT Spangler: that she The judge. ah She's just freaking in there. she's back in her chamber she's got her robe unzipped you know it's casual they're all having cocktails She's like, listen, I'm going to dismiss.

JT Spangler: The jury, I'm going to make it a bench trial and I'm ruling him not guilty. by a plea of insanity. show of hands who's cool with that. And everyone's like, that seems fine. ah

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: And she's like, all right, done deal. i was Flabbergasted. Did that.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: that one

Jeff: That was... Yeah.

JT Spangler: Conclusion of the court case.

Jeff: no no way that could happen. But let me tell you, that whole scene that you were just talking about where they're drinking and ah Laura Linney's trying to light the cigarette. who she just smoked through the whole damn movie.

JT Spangler: By the way. ah Alfred Woodard, the judge.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: Who is... An absolute hammer. in this movie. And every time I see her in something, she's such a badass.

Jeff: Yeah.

Jeff: Yeah, dude, she's good in Scrooge.

JT Spangler: ah

Jeff: She's good in everything.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: ah Laura Lenny trying to light the cigarette, though, and can't get the lighter and her hands are shaking.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: um And then he comes over and lights it for her. uh dude that was You could tell she was like, what the hell just happened?

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: I just got choked out by Roy, who is also Aaron. And it turns out it's no one.

JT Spangler: I got. I got choked out by the defendant who's on trial for murder, and the judge said, actually, I've decided he's not guilty. off your neck.

Jeff: Yeah, that makes me want a cigarette. Amen. That's awesome.

JT Spangler: But yeah, and we can talk about some of the legal stuff later on in the worst. But um let's do quick.

Jeff: yeah

JT Spangler: My first one is there never was an errand.

Jeff: Yeah, that's that that's my first quote also. ah This isn't a very quote heavy movie for me.

JT Spangler: No, there's a lot of good dialogue, but there was not a lot where I was like, boy, I'm really gonna use that one later on.

Jeff: See, and that's the thing. like I know a lot of the times we pick quotes because it's always like... ah Um, a lot of people go to school for 10 years yeah they're called doctors we just that's easier to fit into conversation and everybody knows what it is and it makes you giggle.

Jeff: ah Where do you put... there was never an Aaron and people giggle after it and not. worry about you. You know what I'm saying? Like I didn't have a lot of the uh quotes that i want i i picked three but they're not my jam uh there was uh there there never was an erin is my first one uh my second one is uh if you want justice go to a whorehouse

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: If you wanna get fucked, go to court. Um, that's

JT Spangler: That's awesome. That's also my second one.

Jeff: Yeah, that's right in the very beginning. um I only wrote it down because of how smug and arrogant he was when he said it. Because that was during the... um

JT Spangler: He's talking to the newspaper reporter, the guy writing in the magazine.

Jeff: the new Yeah, I was going to say magazine or newspaper.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: One of the...

JT Spangler: Magazine article.

Jeff: wanted to um

JT Spangler: well Right.

Jeff: I loved it.

JT Spangler: Before he says that, he says another quote that I considered, which is like. you so He said, you know, my professor on the first day of law school said, from now on, if your mother tells you she loves you, get a second opinion.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: And then it's like.

Jeff: That's pretty good.

JT Spangler: Comma. You want justice, go to a whorehouse. You want to get fucked, to go to court.

Jeff: Right.

JT Spangler: So.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: Like that. That was two of the quotes I was considering right there in that one. bit.

Jeff: i do and dude that like sets up how he is and that's how you can tell like He's not an ambulance chaser, but he just definitely wants to be in the spotlight, wants to take that on just because you know he'll be out there.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: Um,

JT Spangler: Yeah, I think the whole magazine article. thing was just supposed to give us a way for Martin Vale to tell us what he thought about himself and his place in the world, because he's talking about like.

Jeff: Right.

JT Spangler: He's like, people, oh yeah he's like, I know you want to ask, just ask. just what time i like Ask. Ask how I can defend people. that I know are guilty. ask How the fuck can you defend? He's like. What do you think?

JT Spangler: Do you think it's about the money? The money's great.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: Not going to lie.

Jeff: Yeah. Yeah.

JT Spangler: Do I like? doing Magazine articles. Yeah. I love it. is but

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: So like he's saying like, I like all the shit that you would think that I would like, but also. i I believe that. Even... Good people can do bad things and everyone deserves their case, their day in court. and that The Constitution says that they're entitled to the best defense they can put together and that they're innocent until proven guilty.

Jeff: Right.

JT Spangler: Like he's he's supposed to be. you know. Like an arrogant. Egotistical. Very wealthy defense attorney, but also he is.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: He does have principles that he cares about.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: the law

Jeff: Yeah. He's like, he's like a good dude too. Yeah. Yeah I like that.

JT Spangler: And all the magazine stuff, I think it was just a way for him to tell the audience that.

Jeff: Yeah. And I like how the guy kept showing up and he was just like, not now. I'll have my people call your people. We can't.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: Just every time the guy showed up, it was a bad time.

JT Spangler: And then.

JT Spangler: And then even after the article comes out and he's on the cover, the guy's still showing up to ask him more stuff. I didn't understand.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: I didn't understand that either. And I didn't know if it was like. ah Remember the the part you were just talking about? That's when they're in the bar. And he's been drinking just...

Jeff: straight whiskey out of the bottle and um

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: He tells, you know, you put any of this in. You print any of this, I'll sue you or something.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: um So is that just that guy just wants to know more information about him or?

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: That's their way of getting exposition?

JT Spangler: I guess.

Jeff: or

JT Spangler: I think, again, that's probably something that was in the book and was a bit larger plot point that like whoever adapted the screenplay was like, let's put that in there.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: And then. It kind of doesn't really make sense. And they just kept it.

Jeff: Yeah. Yeah, probably

JT Spangler: but My third quote is also Richard Gere. Uh, Talking to the magazine writer. he like First thing I ask a new client is. Have you been saving for a rainy day? Well, guess what? It's raining.

Jeff: Yeah. Um, I... Dude, I have no idea. I know having ah an attorney. for stuff like this cost a fortune.

Jeff: Um, How do, like, if you... are convicted or... Not convicted, accused of killing somebody. And you're me.

Jeff: A teacher. And you didn't do it and you want to get off. Can you even afford a crazy? expensive attorney. You know what I'm saying? like

JT Spangler: Yeah, ladies, ladies, and gentlemen.

Jeff: Uh... Yeah!

JT Spangler: Enjoy!

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: jerryra You get the public defender. Who stutters?

Jeff: I don't want the public defender that starts. That's what I'm saying. So like.

JT Spangler: Yeah, man, you should have made more money. Well, you, because you're a teacher and everyone likes you, when you murder someone, I think you'll get a good lawyer because it'll be a high profile case.

Jeff: okay

Jeff: No, I don't think that's the case.

JT Spangler: Good. people at punch tool will be all over tiktok with like hashtag save mr horn and like Uh, like he I know he'd never try to kill me.

Jeff: He never tried to kill me.

JT Spangler: um But yeah, dude, I don't, you you just.

Jeff: pfft

JT Spangler: If you're asking, is there a different legal system for rich people and for poor people?

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: Yeah, absolutely.

Jeff: yeah

JT Spangler: We fucking for sure know that.

Jeff: Well, so that's so the end of that question was how much does a defense attorney like? Martin Vale cost.

JT Spangler: I don't know, a thousand bucks an hour.

Jeff: oh And that's every time he's working on the case, not just while he's in court, right? That's every time he's like at home.

JT Spangler: Yeah. Yeah.

Jeff: thinking about the case, but doing something else like his secretary.

JT Spangler: Yeah, and dude, I don't think for like rich people.

Jeff: He could charge.

JT Spangler: Yeah, I think for like rich people. Dead l - They're just going like. ah Hey, remember we got a meeting on Tuesdays? Like, yeah, I remember the meetings. Cha -ching, $1 ,000.

Jeff: but I remember the meaning. chick. Amen. God. Okay. So I'm going to jail is what you're saying.

JT Spangler: I mean...

Jeff: Don't kill anybody.

JT Spangler: Yeah, yeah.

Jeff: Don't even be by somebody who's going to get killed.

JT Spangler: youre

JT Spangler: No, just... Yeah. You should probably just chop both arms off so everyone knows you can't hold a knife or a gun.

Jeff: It wasn't me.

JT Spangler: right

Jeff: I could still shrug. It wasn't me. All right. My last one is when Roy shows up and he's ah yelling at. ah Richard Gere. In that little...

Jeff: room that's next to his cell.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: what Not an interrogation room. What do you call that where you hang out with your lawyer?

JT Spangler: I don't know, like an interview room or something.

Jeff: yeah like a tiny little room um and he's yelling and he's like let me tell you something marty you're a good man but you're a terrible lawyer I freaking love that. Uh, I like how he can tell marty Martin.

JT Spangler: Nice.

Jeff: Bill was a good dude. In the end.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: And fell for it. And he bid on it hard because Ed Norton's such a good actor.

JT Spangler: um Let's do our... Best three characters, my... Number one is Edward Norton.

Jeff: ah Dude, mine's definitely... Roy. Aaron. A -Ron.

JT Spangler: A.

Jeff: Um,

JT Spangler: A. Rowe.

Jeff: Dude, that's, I think. that i again. I see why he won. I just don't. I don't even know how you do what he did. like I am not a good actor at all.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: So I don't think I could do any of the stuff he's doing, but like, especially this, like he's selling it. Hard. He tricked... Me, who was watching it for. The twist, I just, it was awesome.

Jeff: He was great.

JT Spangler: I, um... He's the easy number one for me. He wins the Golden Globe. He's nominated for an Oscar. He's nominated for a BAFTA. It's his first movie role Everyone's going like, dude, this Edward Norton guy is incredible.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: Rightfully so. He said that he heard about the audition from Connie Britton, who he'd worked with, I guess, maybe on plays or something, but she got. called to read for the role that ended up being Maura Tierney's. Richard gears assistant.

JT Spangler: And she left the audition and called Edward Norton.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: He's like, she called me from a pay phone. She was like, Hey, they're doing an open call for this movie role. She's like, I feel like. It's perfect for you And he's like, that's how I found out about it. And then, you know, Matt Damon's like, they're doing open casting calls. Leo doesn't want it. Everyone goes in. edward Norton beats out everybody.

JT Spangler: Gets the roll, crushes it. And like, we're so disappointed we go ride Good Will Hunting. um I like it. the lore around it, but I also just think it's a great. Part. I mean, it is To his credit.

Jeff: I do.

JT Spangler: like know People on Reddit going like, so he pretended to be two people.

Jeff: i

JT Spangler: Isn't he an actor? It doesn't seem like it's that hard. and

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: I don't know, maybe it's not, but it... And Richard Gere was like, we're almost going to not do the movie because we couldn't find someone. like The Roy part was easy, but the Aaron part was...

Jeff: that could sell it. Yeah.

JT Spangler: And I think that. um Edward Norton said like they the stammering, the stuttering wasn't in the script. They came up with that.

Jeff: Yeah, so I was reading the same thing.

JT Spangler: when they start working on it plan He's like, how do we make this guy seem like. you know, really like innocent and.

Jeff: Yeah, ah dude, I don't know if it was the same thing.

JT Spangler: Take care. grace

Jeff: He he came in with that, um like, I don't know. mountain accent that he had where it's like kind of country. I don't know what do you call that? Appalachian, maybe like he came in with that country's Kentucky sound and accent. already.

Jeff: And they said, like, what can we do to really. lay it on thick that he's like that. And everybody said like. ah He's the one that says, why why don't we make him stutter and do that?

Jeff: I... He killed it.

JT Spangler: I love it

Jeff: He killed it. I think of that this will be a movie I think about when I think about Ed Norton now. i can

JT Spangler: I. I did. um Yeah, for me too. I was going to say I noticed. When they were when Andre Brower, who was the investigator for Richard Gere. For a high...

JT Spangler: Powered defense attorney. He ran a really lean operation. It was just him and Maura Tierney and Andre Brower.

Jeff: Yeah. But, I mean...

JT Spangler: Yeah. he't like a paralegal. He didn't have like other junior attorneys doing shit.

Jeff: Yeah.

Jeff: Here's the thing, though. ah If...

JT Spangler: But all the new Mercedes with the like.

Jeff: It...

JT Spangler: Beep, beep. Locked. Door lock, which is...

Jeff: I did hear that.

JT Spangler: Big time at 96.

Jeff: I did hear that. If you have Captain Holt, though, doing all of your... detective work, you're going to be fine. That's all you need.

JT Spangler: Yeah, i I feel like one investigator was enough, but I thought he needed like a paralegal and like a couple of junior attorneys.

Jeff: Yeah, especially since Martyrny freaking shit the bed and missed it.

JT Spangler: And just see.

Jeff: what the whatever part that was, and he's yelling at him outside the elevator.

JT Spangler: Yeah, well, I have beef with that part because that's not how the legal proceedings work.

Jeff: for that.

Jeff: Right.

JT Spangler: But what I'm going to say is when Andre Brouwer goes to Edward Norton's character's apartment. It's like there's a bunch of books in there and he's like picking up one of them with his handkerchief to look at it. And the book is Absalom, Absalom, which is...

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: um William Faulkner.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: And dude, it it's all about. like The. social code of the old South and how people conceal their real selves in order to hide.

JT Spangler: Like. the deepest darkest worst versions of themselves um So.

Jeff: Wait. what was So wait, if that I didn't catch that that's what the book was. the Didn't he say in there that I don't like Faulkner or something?

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: So that's even better.

JT Spangler: Yeah. but that's the book But that's the book he was reading when Andre Breuer went to his apartment because it was like the one that was on his table. It had like a bookmark in it.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: It was handkerchief and I saw what it was.

Jeff: Nice.

JT Spangler: And then after like, I don't remember that book. I don't know if I read it and I was reading it about it. I was like, dude, that's a great. That's a great prop placement right there.

Jeff: But that's... that's just another level to him saying, I, I didn't. Um, Underline in that book, I don't even like Faulkner. But it turns out he does.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: He's reading them at home.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: That's freaking cool.

JT Spangler: well and that and the one The book that featured in the – Court case was the Scarlet Letter, and that's Nathaniel.

Jeff: Scruggler.

JT Spangler: Hawthorne.

Jeff: Oh, Hawthorne is who he doesn't read. That's who it is, not Faulkner.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: Yeah, I got him confused. My bad. I didn't catch that that was the book on the on the table.

JT Spangler: Anyway.

Jeff: That's cool.

JT Spangler: Edwin Orton. Number one, who's your number two for characters?

Jeff: ah Dude, Richard Gere. He he's not my favorite actor, but he's I mean, he's not Robert Redford either. So, like, I like him. I thought he did a good job in this. I felt like he was super slick and slimy when he was supposed to be, but then I felt like he had.

Jeff: What? Like I. um You know how we were talking about how he's actually a good dude and he's, he believed that people are innocent and all that stuff. but he also wants his face out there and it's hard i like that uh he can't figure that out Um, He loves cameras. He loves winning. He loves all that stuff.

Jeff: uh he's the smartest man in the room or whatever um I like that he gets. tricked at the end. But he played it a great.

Jeff: he He played it great. I thought he did a wonderful job.

JT Spangler: He... um He's really good. I was thinking when I was watching this, I'm like, I don't. And nothing, Richard Gere. I don't like her.

Jeff: Yeah. Yeah, me too.

JT Spangler: Like him. But like he his biggest movies are the ones that he like came to prominence was American Gigolo, which was released the year I was born. And Officer Gentleman, which came out when I was two years old.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: I was not locked in on either of those.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: You have not seen him.

Jeff: Read it.

JT Spangler: Jiggle low.

Jeff: We did one with him though. We did.

JT Spangler: Good.

Jeff: Fucking pretty woman.

JT Spangler: We did Pretty Woman.

Jeff: Yeah, pretty woman.

JT Spangler: And everybody knows Pretty Woman, but he was already established at that point. But like I missed the like when he came on.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: i'm too young so I'm like, yeah, he's just the guy that does rom -coms with Julia Roberts.

Jeff: Right.

JT Spangler: And I like those movies.

Jeff: Yaya.

JT Spangler: um But it's not like. I'm racing out to see your Richard Gere movie.

Jeff: Right.

JT Spangler: So. ah That's why, to me, he was... pleasantly surprising in this i was like dude he's really good in this movie i'm I'm into this.

Jeff: What, um... If you think of one thing about Richard Gere that you know... who

JT Spangler: The terrible rumor?

Jeff: What is...

JT Spangler: We've talked about this before.

Jeff: I know. Isn't that weird, though? we are Dude, it shocks me that before the Internet, stuff like that could get moved around.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

JT Spangler: Hmm.

Jeff: and Everybody knew it.

JT Spangler: Yeah. Like, dude, what's the one thing that everyone knew about Marilyn Manson in the 90s?

Jeff: Yeah. that he was on the Wonder Years and he removed a rib so he could...

JT Spangler: Boop. think

Jeff: Yeah. That's ridiculous.

JT Spangler: who's your Who's your third character?

Jeff: All right. So. uh Part of me wanted to put... Um, Alfre Woodard. Because she killed it as the judge.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: Part of me wanted to put Francis McDormand in. as the doctor because she plays it so straight. And she's like her. evaluation, psych eval that she does.

Jeff: I really liked it. And when she told the. court that she had spent 60 hours with him.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: uh dude i don't Have I ever spent 60 hours with you total and in our lifetime? It doesn't feel like it. That seems like a long time.

JT Spangler: yes

Jeff: I don't know it just feels like a long time

JT Spangler: ni

JT Spangler: Um, That's a long time as an adult. we probably We probably have not spent 60 hours together in person in the last five years because we don't live in.

Jeff: Right.

Jeff: Right.

JT Spangler: State.

Jeff: Yeah, yeah

JT Spangler: But like. In high school? Yeah, dude, we we could do that in a week.

Jeff: Yeah. No, I know, I know um I almost put her, but dude, Laura Linney, she freaking, she did such a good job.

JT Spangler: Laura Lenny, I got everybody you mentioned was awesome.

Jeff: Um,

JT Spangler: And this whole cast was. Fantastic. But Laura Linney.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: Freaking.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: So good. I like. um how good she is here and how good she still is now.

Jeff: Yeah, I was just about to say like... i was like what's she been in recently and i clicked on uh i pulled up her name And I saw a picture from last year and that chick does not look any different.

Jeff: than when she did when she was in her 30s doing this movie.

JT Spangler: Yeah, dude, she's 62 and she looks exactly the same.

Jeff: She hasn't aged at all, it seems like. Yeah. Um, I freaking love her in the Truman Show. that. That whole movie was great, too. And... I mean...

Jeff: Again. She's not my absolute favorite actress ever, but she's been good in all of the things.

JT Spangler: she's ah She's not my favorite actress, but I... If I see her in a movie, I always know. what i'm getting like she's gonna be good

Jeff: Right. Right, same

JT Spangler: like we've done We've done movies of hers. We did Dave in 93.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: Um, It's crazy that like We got Laura Linney going back to 93 and we were she's still doing She's not stopped.

Jeff: No.

JT Spangler: Like she did Ozark. like now. uh

Jeff: Yeah. and doing a good job. It looks the same. Friggin'.

JT Spangler: But this this was really good. This was a really good performance. It's a great part. She's fantastic. I was...

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: i mean Like she was a freaking hard ass. She was like throwing out quips. She was being funny. She was like. Uh,

Jeff: Shit.

JT Spangler: Chief's kicking ass.

Jeff: She played nervous and like shaken after that. Dude, I'm telling you, that was the part where I was like. Oh man. She's really a good actress. I believed it.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: Um, this Yeah, she did a great job. That's who I picked for my third.

JT Spangler: Mine too.

Jeff: Jet.

JT Spangler: So we're...

Jeff: Janet.

JT Spangler: We're three for three. I mean, it's. That's the top three, Bill, but the whole cast, the whole ensemble.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: I was thinking this movie, because it is small in scale, would be a really fun play.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: Like they're always like.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: How you doing?

Jeff: Because there's not...

JT Spangler: hey Let's just put this shit out as a play. This is a perfect play.

Jeff: Yeah, it's not even it's not like a bottle movie or anything, but it's not that many scenes in different places. They could totally do this.

JT Spangler: Yeah. And it's like six or seven parts.

Jeff: Totally.

JT Spangler: Like it's not.

Jeff: Right.

JT Spangler: Um,

Jeff: Bring in Frazier's dad. Bring in Captain Holt. Well, no, he's dead.

JT Spangler: No, I think we're going to have to recast some of this.

Jeff: But.

JT Spangler: um

Jeff: Yes.

JT Spangler: Yeah, did the writers, ah Steve ah Shagan and Anne Biderman.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: Both of them. I didn't have a lot of like Credits for?

Jeff: Yeah, it was hard for me to find stuff too. um There was one.

JT Spangler: a Steve Shagan was mainly a writer, so I'm wondering if maybe he was... Did more of the adaptation.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: It's...

Jeff: i

JT Spangler: um enough because it's like their imdb page is like two paragraphs which that's more two more than mine But.

Jeff: hu

JT Spangler: It's not like I can go read the... article the you know the vanity fair article about their writing process for this movie

Jeff: Um. Well, ah two things. One. And Bitterman, Bitterman, she.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: um Wrote and produced Ray Donovan.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: And that's a TV show that Kat loves. She likes those kind of shows. And I've watched a few episodes. It's really good. And it's it's got the same kind of feel to it. Um,

JT Spangler: Yeah. starring Urban Meyer.

Jeff: Let's go right now.

JT Spangler: Starting Urban Meyer.

Jeff: Urban Meyer's in that?

JT Spangler: Isn't it Lev Schreiber?

Jeff: Leo Schreiber, yeah, yeah.

JT Spangler: I always think Lev Schreiber and Urban Meyer look exactly the same.

Jeff: I never put those two together until just now. Um, Yes, that has got Urban Meyer in it. When I pulled up ah Steve Shahagan, I realized that he joined the Coast Guard when World War II broke out, and I'm probably not going to know a lot of the stuff he's done.

Jeff: Um, since he was in World War II. uh all of his stuff is in the 70s and 80s and i didn't have any of it Like I didn't.

JT Spangler: Yeah, his his Wikipedia picture looks like...

Jeff: recognizing it.

JT Spangler: uh he's getting ready to board a whaling vessel like it's just it's like

Jeff: he's He's missing the snow cap and he could be.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: Frigging Jacques Cousteau. Um, The fact that he worked on the NBC television show for Tarzan. Uh, That's frigging old school.

Jeff: Um,

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: Yeah, I don't know too much about the writers. And I looked up some stuff about the guy who... wrote the the books.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: Ah. Other than The Primal Fear, and now I know the other two books that come after it, I've never read any of his other stuff either. So like I don't I don't know anything about the guy who wrote the books either

JT Spangler: No.

Jeff: Um, It's I mean

Jeff: Sharky's Machine came out the the year I was born in 78. Apparently they made a movie about it with Burt Reynolds, but that's all I knew. Like I've never seen it. I don't know anything about it.

JT Spangler: Yeah, William Deal is the author of the books, but I know nothing about him either.

Jeff: The books. Yeah, yeah

JT Spangler: the director kind of the same thing. Like he did. Primal fear in 96 it had fallen in 98 needed frequency in 2000. That's three consecutive like pretty weird pretty good movies.

Jeff: Yeah. Um,

Jeff: Dude, I i mean...

JT Spangler: But as he seemed like he's mainly.

Jeff: I've heard... fracture, I know, but...

JT Spangler: an one do

Jeff: Didn't Fracture the one? Hang on, I'm clicking on it. Yeah, yeah. It's got Anthony Hopkins and ah Gosling.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: I liked that movie, and he he directed that one. I just... um All the TV stuff, it's not like the L .A. Law and Hill Street Blues.

JT Spangler: But it's all ah procedural stuff.

Jeff: Hello. procedural.

JT Spangler: It's all...

Jeff: I don't like that.

JT Spangler: It's all procedural stuff. Cop shows or like everybody involved in this just came from the world of like procedurals.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: Um, which I'm sure was on purpose. But.

Jeff: executive executive Executive producer Dick Wolf. Tum Tum Um, yeah i don't know and even the stuff after this where i'm like hey this guy made a big Chunk of money.

Jeff: off of a small amount spent, it seems like he would get some more movies, but I don't recognize any of the ones after this either.

JT Spangler: Uh... Dude, you don't remember fallen?

Jeff: Yeah, no, I remember him, but I'm saying like this made a lot of money. It feels like he could make bigger stuff, but. none of the stuff i remember uh that one and What was the other F1 that I just said?

JT Spangler: frequency Frequency and then...

Jeff: Frat. Fracture and frequency.

JT Spangler: Fraction.

Jeff: Jesus, this dude's all about the Fs.

JT Spangler: Yes.

Jeff: Amen.

JT Spangler: Half vomit everywhere. Yeah, anyway, the writers, the directors... that Nobody, anyone's really, I'm sure people in. holly would have heard of them but we

Jeff: Right. right right

JT Spangler: The most familiar name in this whole... Production team is James Newton Howard, who does the score.

Jeff: Yeah, and I don't even remember it. It was that good.

JT Spangler: No. Me neither. um Yeah, dude. Let's do... Let's do the worst.

Jeff: I had the real estate plot was too much.

JT Spangler: Yeah, the real estate subplot. I didn't really, it was interesting. It just didn't add that much to the movie and it took up time, valuable killing and fornication time.

Jeff: So. Peace. And there was both of those in this movie. um Dude, I wrote down real estate plot is too much. And then I just started making a bullet points under there.

Jeff: of the people involved. And I didn't understand why they... put it all there's like the archbishop the alderman That guy, Pinero.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: Then there's Frasier's dad.

JT Spangler: but The DA.

Jeff: Like. some kind of South river development, something I wrote down.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: That was, I guess the people that.

JT Spangler: yeah There's a whole ah

Jeff: Like I...

JT Spangler: There's hope.

Jeff: we didn't need all that

JT Spangler: Conspiracy. The subplot that I'm sure probably works great in the novel because you got to fill 300 pages.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: But here we got to.

Jeff: Right.

JT Spangler: Way to get things moving.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: Up with you. Most of the stuff I had was about... Well I didn't like that. That was too much. Or I just, I liked it. I shouldn't need it.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: Was it about the courtroom stuff? Like you were talking about how Maura Tierney got met got it in trouble because she didn't get the book. ah

Jeff: Right.

JT Spangler: It's called disclosure, dickhead.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: He has to tell you or that could be a mistrial. um You can't just...

Jeff: Yeah, you can't just bring it.

JT Spangler: Bring out a highlighted book that you found in the murder scene that only one side is keeping for a secret.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: That's not how.

Jeff: Right. Right.

JT Spangler: The court works. Um, so there's a bunch of stuff like that. I was like, I don't think that's, and then judge is like, I think we're done with the jury. I'm going to make my decision right now. That's all. um Like that?

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: It doesn't. work that way.

Jeff: Amen.

JT Spangler: And then like there was like a 25 minute.

Jeff: Yes.

JT Spangler: video of lawyers talking about this movie which i watched eight minutes of Uh,

Jeff: Yeah. on Two Speed.

JT Spangler: Just to confirm it. All the stuff that I... I thought it was weird. They were going like, that's not how that works.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: uh But it's, I don't know, man, it's strange when you have seen. courtroom movies like probably all of us listening have you just get a sense like i kind of know how this works uh

Jeff: I could totally defend myself.

JT Spangler: Yeah, I'm like, I just, I'll handle it. Don't worry about it. I'm going to take this traffic ticket. I don't need a lawyer. I'm going to go up there. I hold myself in contempt. Uh,

Jeff: Ah. Amen. It's either guilty or not guilty.

JT Spangler: But I...

Jeff: I think I get the point. I don't think you do. I would totally be in contempt every time. I don't know what's going on.

JT Spangler: Heh heh. Yeah.

Jeff: What's going on?

JT Spangler: Ugh. Mud in the Tide, you ever heard of that?

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: She ain't got that.

JT Spangler: But yeah, I just felt like a lot of the courtrooms, I was like, I don't think that's how that works.

Jeff: ah ah

Jeff: Yeah. No, i agreed.

JT Spangler: like They're like freaking witnesses on each other. They're withholding evidence. They're just like yelling at the judge. She's yelling at them. They're all drinking. i was This seems...

Jeff: sneaking in places and stealing videos and switching out stickers. By the way, he peeled that sticker off that VHS tape like it was supposed to come off.

JT Spangler: ever

Jeff: Them shit ain't never.

JT Spangler: never I wouldn't.

Jeff: Never coming off.

JT Spangler: Happen.

Jeff: Oh, my God. It would be.

JT Spangler: Even if he'd been in there with a heat gun and a razor knife, it wouldn't have come off. And I didn't know. i didn't Did you pick this up? Because I couldn't figure out. How did he know which video was the right video?

Jeff: i did i I guess on the front it said... ah Point deep, Adam.

JT Spangler: The sex thing?

Jeff: Underage porn tape? I don't know. Like, I don't know how he knew.

JT Spangler: The. The archbishop forcing altar boys to perform sexual acts. on a young woman is horrible. But I'll tell you what, I'm not a big fan of him. videotaping himself doing his own sermons either. That seems like.

Jeff: I don't like...

JT Spangler: and like that part of the process.

Jeff: in Any of the stuff. All of that. Just gave me. As my students say, they gave me the ick. um And I didn't like it. um And a lot of times I'm watching movies and if there's just a random pair of boobs, I'm always like, all right. But this time I was like, oh.

Jeff: Oh. All right. Like I was.

JT Spangler: well i thought i feel like we kind of... The movie didn't really deal with it. Because the the movie ends with you finding out that like. Aaron Stampler is a fabrication and the Roy, the.

JT Spangler: The. murderer is the real one.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: I think you're supposed to leave the movie thinking that Edward Norton's character is the bad guy, but I was still thinking. The Archbishop is the bad guy.

Jeff: He is the bad guy. There's two bad guys.

JT Spangler: so so i' like this guy is uh edward norton's character is Probably crazy and definitely dangerous, but also he. killed the archbishop for sexually assaulting him as an altar boy. so um Not.

Jeff: Didn't... But didn't he kill the girlfriend too?

JT Spangler: As upset.

Jeff: Didn't he, uh, Linda?

JT Spangler: Yes. Yes.

Jeff: Yeah. So I think he's the bad guy too.

JT Spangler: Yes, he's definitely he's definitely a bad guy.

Jeff: And Richard Gere.

JT Spangler: Because he...

Jeff: He tried to get the guy who... He ended up not. doing what he was supposed to do and get the wrong person in jail. And he's the bad guy also. Is there any good guys in this?

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: Laura Linney?

JT Spangler: guyby yeah

Jeff: guy Who is the blind with the blue eyes sitting in the front row of the...

JT Spangler: Um,

Jeff: the last day of court.

JT Spangler: Yeah, I was trying to figure it out because she had...

Jeff: They kept They kept zooming in on him and I was like.

JT Spangler: I promise.

Jeff: Should I write this down? Who is that?

JT Spangler: prominently featured. I wonder if that's like they had scenes that got cut out somewhere.

Jeff: Probably, yeah. Yeah.

JT Spangler: Um, But yeah, man, I was. I was trying to figure out, like, this movie's... Kind of not just got a lot of bad guys.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: uh

Jeff: Yeah. It's all bad, guys.

JT Spangler: But yeah, all the worst, all them worst was the.

Jeff: it

JT Spangler: courtroom stuff for me.

Jeff: Yeah. No, I do, but ah the courtroom and the... psychological warfare in between the the lawyer and the the guy.

Jeff: The lawyer and Edward Norton. I like that part.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: But all all the actual procedural parts, I was like, this is not. That's not right.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: And the real estate stuff.

JT Spangler: Yeah, procedurals the procedural stuff. I like that.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: um And some of it was like well directed. Like I liked how they did the opening statements and they were like would layer like one line of the prosecutors and then the defense would get one line.

Jeff: Yeah, that was good.

JT Spangler: like It was almost like a montage of the opening statements.

Jeff: That was good.

JT Spangler: Like, that's a really good way to handle that.

Jeff: Yeah. I also like how Richard Gere was like leaning on the banister in front of the jury.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: he was he was being all close and nice and smiling a lot

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: Laura Linney was straight and doing her thing. because She was trying to prove that she's supposed to be there.

JT Spangler: Yeah, dude, she had that 90s, that women's 90s hair where it was like kind of like shoulder length and did that one.

Jeff: I liked it.

JT Spangler: like half circle at the bottom. I don't know how.

Jeff: Yeah, the swoop. Yeah.

JT Spangler: I don't know how you accomplish that. but it would probably go as well.

Jeff: Yeah, she got a new haircut. he She says it in the beginning.

JT Spangler: Um, old tech Dude. just

Jeff: how about a VHS tape

JT Spangler: computer. VHS. Giant computers, no internet.

Jeff: Um, Lots of television news, lots of boxes with paperwork in it.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: files or whatever.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: um Yeah, a lot of that.

JT Spangler: Yeah, books.

Jeff: wouldn't Wouldn't...

JT Spangler: out of paper

Jeff: Wouldn't there now be like... Like that this kind of thing would be all over like social media and stuff now. Because...

JT Spangler: Oh yeah.

Jeff: Even those like that lady who killed her three kids and then blamed her husband and the husband, all the ladies are standing outside the courtroom holding up signs saying he should be in jail, even though she killed him because he.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: left her alone to go get food or something. um like That's all over social media. and I mean, I don't see it, but... Cat tells me about it. ah So this kind of stuff would totally be all over social media now.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

JT Spangler: Yeah. Oh, yeah, big time. I feel like the I don't know. uh what that world is like, but I feel sure there's probably people producing podcasts about that court case, like as it's happening.

Jeff: Oh God, that sounds horrible.

JT Spangler: Like the latest great Game of Thrones episode came out. But instead it's just like about what happened in the trial.

Jeff: Yeah. so

JT Spangler: Uh.

Jeff: And then Kato Kaelin said. Yeah, that sounds horrible.

JT Spangler: Political incorrectness? I didn't really pick up any.

Jeff: I don't know, like... um I put down that... um

Jeff: I don't know, multiple personality. Isn't that like mental health? like i

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: I know that they were playing it for a reason, but I know that's a real thing, and I didn't know if that was... okay to say like What's it called? like a Not multiple person personality.

JT Spangler: ah Multiple personality. Multiple personality disorder in the 90s is now called dissociative identity disorder.

Jeff: This is... Yeah, that's the thing.

JT Spangler: and

Jeff: Dissociate.

JT Spangler: And. Yep. to like exploit it as a plot device for a novel and a movie is probably... and bad taste. But it wasn't.

Jeff: Right. right

JT Spangler: Peace.

Jeff: Right. Back then it wasn't. But now I can see it.

JT Spangler: Like this guy ever came dyslexia to compete in the luge

Jeff: Didn't even want to do it. Silver medal.

JT Spangler: Uh...

Jeff: um Yeah.

JT Spangler: Five questions. Is it okay for kids?

Jeff: Jesus Christ, no.

JT Spangler: Hell no.

Jeff: Even though it's not scary.

JT Spangler: No.

Jeff: like like like you thought going in, it's still not okay.

JT Spangler: somebody Somebody. Somebody murders the archbishop. but There's boobs in there. there's just

Jeff: There's... ah Sexual abuse, frigging, yeah.

JT Spangler: Yeah. Everybody's smoking cigarettes. It's so it's all all the things you don't want your kids to be exposed to. The Catholic Church.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: Stay away from all of it.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: uh Also, going back to the worst for just a second.

Jeff: I... I said 16. Yeah.

JT Spangler: It... If. If Roy or Aaron Stampler is so... Smart. Why didn't he have a better... plan to kill the archbishop and get away? Like, why would he stab him 78 times and then sprint away from the helicopter in broad daylight, soaked in his blood, and then hope that if he stuttered, he would get off?

Jeff: I think he... um I don't think he had a plan

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: I think it all just happened at once.

JT Spangler: Because the twist made it sound like, oh, man, I really put one over on you guys. I'm like, yeah, but you had a horrible plan.

Jeff: Yeah, no. Yeah, I don't think I could murder somebody and get away with it either. either i just

JT Spangler: I will.

Jeff: I don't know

JT Spangler: I think the reality is if you tried to stab someone 78 times, you'd have to take a couple of water breaks.

Jeff: Yeah, i'm not I'm not stabbing anybody. I don't even like Capri Sun.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: There's no way.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: I could stab someone.

JT Spangler: Yeah. i'll just drink something another time i'm not drinking this

Jeff: Um,

JT Spangler: Yes. 16.

Jeff: Yeah, I said 16 years old, right?

JT Spangler: Yep. Yeah. Would this movie get made if it were pitched now? Yeah. I don't see why.

Jeff: Dude, I think it could. Yeah.

JT Spangler: It's great.

Jeff: I mean... Everybody likes a twist. If they could make it that far in.

JT Spangler: Absolutely. Yeah.

Jeff: My students wouldn't have made it.

JT Spangler: Uh...

Jeff: It... ah So the next question, you know, TV or movie. And I'm like, oh, maybe it could be like a little miniseries. ah For my students, it would have to be a series of 130 consecutive TikToks, just one after another.

Jeff: that they could swipe through because they're not watching this.

JT Spangler: Yeah. Yeah, where the captions come on. Actually, for the first time ever, ah instead of saying movie or TV show, I really want it to be a play. I think it'd be a great play.

Jeff: dude you're You're right. It would be a good play.

JT Spangler: um I didn't try to recast it. Because it's got to be an unknown. But. It's a really fun part. for Edward Norton.

Jeff: Uh... Yeah. I. Can Edward Norton play the the lawyer this time? Because I feel like he could pretty much play anything.

JT Spangler: Yeah, what did Pedro Pascal... For the lawyer?

Jeff: Oh. Oh yeah. Good call.

JT Spangler: Just because he's in everything and I feel like he'd be good at it

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: But. Yep.

Jeff: What about um

JT Spangler: It's the most fun.

Jeff: Ed Norton, when he just switches, when he gets angry, I bet he would be a good Incredible Hulk. I bet he could make a lot of money on his Incredible Hulk movie if he made an Incredible Hulk movie.

JT Spangler: I mean it's worth a try.

Jeff: Yeah, he didn't make a lot of money in his Incredible Hulk movie. it was

JT Spangler: He didn't.

Jeff: it was It was a bomb.

JT Spangler: He didn't. and Well, he got invited to return for the Avengers Assemble where, like, they brought back everybody who ever played any superhero.

Jeff: ah

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: and he's I think I'm good. I'll be at my house.

Jeff: He's like, no, no, I ripped enough pants. I'm out. Um, yeah dude I didn't recast either I didn't

JT Spangler: Yeah, if it's going to be a play, it's going to be unknown. I think Jeremy Strong would be a good... person for I don't know if he can be the ah stammering like ah gentle guy, but he's definitely like a scary, ah mean guy.

Jeff: I don't know who Who that is, do I? Oh, wait.

JT Spangler: He's a...

Jeff: Yes, I know.

JT Spangler: to

Jeff: I know who that is. Yeah.

JT Spangler: Yeah, he's in the so succession and he's just about to...

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: to do the social reckoning, like the social network. sequel.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: And he's in the big short. um But he's one of those guys.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: It's like. he's a method actor so like the whole time for the social reckoning filming he's never like once Talked in his regular voice. he might be too old in fact he probably is too old i thought he was younger than that

Jeff: 47. He was born on Christmas Day in 78.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: Nice.

JT Spangler: Too old.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: We'll find an unknown for our play.

Jeff: Yeah, sounds good.

JT Spangler: Can you still watch and enjoy this movie in 2026?

Jeff: Yeah, dude

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: It's a frigging masterclass of.

JT Spangler: We...

Jeff: Cool acting.

JT Spangler: both shot For the first time, somehow.

Jeff: Holds up incredibly well.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: Go back and watch it again.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: That's what I'm saying.

JT Spangler: then then

Jeff: like When I went back and watched the scenes again, even knowing that it was going to happen, I was like, wow, this is... Like that's how good it was for me. Cause I was like, wow, he really did a good job.

JT Spangler: Well, it's kind of like when we did Seven.

Jeff: Killed it.

JT Spangler: Like, you can go back and watch the really famous scenes after you've seen the whole movie. and Just like go watch them again. You're like, God, man, that's even better now that I know what's about to happen.

Jeff: No, yeah Yes, yes. Yes.

JT Spangler: So this.

Jeff: Um,

JT Spangler: We're recording on October 6th. This will come out somewhere around October 12th. And then the next episode. will be our Halloween episode. And it's going to be. Scream.

Jeff: Oh. Oh, yeah.

JT Spangler: Yeah.

Jeff: I know how much you love scary movies.

JT Spangler: I.

Jeff: That's a slasher movie. It's not that scary, right?

JT Spangler: I was going to say, it's I don't like like scary, scary movies, but I saw that one in the theaters when I was a teenager.

Jeff: Yeah.

JT Spangler: I feel sure it would be fine.

Jeff: Yeah, yeah. Yeah, it'll it'll be fine. Oh, wait. How did you watch this? Where did you watch it? You rented it?

JT Spangler: Uh, I watched it on my home television by renting it.

Jeff: Oh, yeah. I watched Pluto. Just making sure.

JT Spangler: In the daytime with all the curtains open, just in case scary stuff was about to happen.

Jeff: Yeah. Ah.

JT Spangler: Uh.

Jeff: But it didn't.

JT Spangler: Yeah. All right.

Jeff: Sort of.

JT Spangler: See you in two weeks for Scream.

Jeff: Yeah. Bye, Coneos.
