JT Spangler: What? Wait, I gotta press another button. god damn
JT Spangler: Regrow hair. You really think we can do this?
Jeff: but
JT Spangler: 820.
Jeff: Dude. That fame. is Ice. Hold. colt the Huh.
JT Spangler: Iconic.
Jeff: Yeah, who did the... Is it Elfman? Danny Elfman. Does that do it? I don't know why I keep getting that one confused with something else. Danny Elfman did this one.
JT Spangler: Danielle did the music, but that theme is from the TV show.
Jeff: Dude.
Jeff: Yeah, yeah, but like the the way he... Because it's kind of sped up a little bit. and When I was watching them do it live and it starts off with just like all of the. ah All of the...
Jeff: ah violins going wicked fast back and forth to get that. Build up. Ah, man. Hi. The theme is one of my favorite things about this whole. series for whatever you call a group of movies now.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Because it's more than a trilogy.
JT Spangler: See you. It's way more. There's like eight or nine of them.
Jeff: There's so many
JT Spangler: um Yeah dude. Freaking. Movie Life Crisis, Season 6, Episode 20, Mission... colon impossible.
Jeff: theres
Jeff: Oh. Dude, did they not did they say what IMF stood for?
JT Spangler: I don't think they did
Jeff: So I went and watched the original or the first two episodes of the TV show while I was grading papers the other day.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: It's a... Impossible Mission Force. Which, uh... I didn't think that's I ever knew that. And they said IMF and all. Nine of the movies or however many they have.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Um, And I never knew that. And I watched it just yesterday when I decided to see what the original was like. Because apparently the people that did the original TV show. didn't want to do they didn't want any part of this they didn't want to have a cameo they didn't like the whole thing so
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Uh, I wanted to see what that was all about. and It's a 1960s TV show.
JT Spangler: Well, I like. Yeah. I remember watching it when I was... a kid, maybe like at my grandparents' house or on like Nick at night or something. I don't know where I would have seen.
Jeff: Yeah. some
JT Spangler: I did see random episodes of it.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: I like that they would do. this in the 90s. is they wouldn't. Like they didn't have to keep repeating the plot out loud to you. Thank you.
Jeff: God, that was...
JT Spangler: They would just give you some shit and you figured it out or you didn't but like they weren't gonna Then we're going to tell you.
Jeff: hu
Jeff: You know what, though? I think I'm not saying like this is the beginning of that. and We always talk about how they have to, you know, you're. competing for two screens so that cuts they constantly have to give exposition about the plot to see what's going on like every ryan reynolds action movie he's just like so wait a second you're telling me we're gonna get in the van and we're gonna drive all the way to france there's no way we can make it like they have to say it over and over again
JT Spangler: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: in this one when they don't do that and people will go like yeah this is this too confusing like I didn't find it confusing, but that was like the biggest gripe I was reading about online after I watched it. like i Maybe it's because I've seen it before. I don't know, man. it
JT Spangler: The only...
Jeff: I thought it was...
JT Spangler: The only part that was... confusing And it was only a little confusing, but I did watch the scene twice. But it's one of my favorite scenes is when he was talking to Jon Voight when he realized Jon Voight wasn't dead. and they were doing the fly.
Jeff: And he's redoing it.
JT Spangler: Thanks. And I was going like.
Jeff: Yes!
JT Spangler: like and and it was fair i was so I was like, oh, he's not. I'm like, it's not. The scenes that he's picturing in the flashback is not what Jon Voight is saying. you know like Oh, he's figuring out that Jon Voight was the one.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: And. i tend to go along with them. I was like, this is actually awesome. But there was a second where I was like, hang on, I gotta rewind and start this over.
Jeff: Yeah. Yeah, when they showed the the the got him blowing up the stuff and then the guy the girl blowing up the stuff and everything was...
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Everybody's flipping sides. ah You said it yourself. I'm booty blind. I can't.
JT Spangler: ah
Jeff: Amen.
JT Spangler: I like like... I like a movie with a complicated plot, like not complicated just for complicated sake, but this has to be a notch.
Jeff: Yeah. Right.
JT Spangler: Also. um I like spy novels. and I like spy movies. And I don't know if... Any of this shit is real. Like I don't.
Jeff: Yeah. Yeah.
JT Spangler: I don't know if you're really in the CIA, if you just like her. on just on Excel all day. Like, I don't know. If they even have guns, but I just I love it, dude
Jeff: Uh...
JT Spangler: Like they're in the. And he's like, we they all have freaking headphones and are talking to each other. And ah Emilio Escoves has stopped coaching hockey for a bit to get on top of the elevator.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Thanks. i had I love it.
Jeff: i dude i don't know if any of it's real either but i really i really like it's got to be some of it's got to be real right
JT Spangler: I would think, but I don't know how you're supposed to know. I thought it was all top secret.
Jeff: Yeah, none none of those alphabet groups we know.
JT Spangler: and Yeah. Yeah dude. Give us this. Give us a synopsis.
Jeff: Um, A botched mission in Prague leaves almost the entire IMF, which stands for Impossible Mission Force, ah team dead, and the agent Ethan Hunt is framed as a mole.
JT Spangler: Yes.
Jeff: who sold out the operation. um So then he tries to figure it out.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: that's It's an impossible mission.
JT Spangler: It also feels like... the plot for most of the mission impossible movies is like they think that he's
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Not really on the right side. And he's like, well. I'm gonna go rogue. I'm going to break into some shit and I'm going to prove that I'm on the right side.
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: and with my cast of misfits. Uh,
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: $80 million dollars eighty million dollar budget, $457 million dollar gross.
Jeff: Till there's...
JT Spangler: uh
Jeff: That's pretty good.
JT Spangler: Third biggest movie of the year behind Twister and ahead of The Rock.
Jeff: Nice.
JT Spangler: So... and
Jeff: Wait, number three. So what was number one? Independence Day, right?
JT Spangler: Independence Day.
Jeff: Yeah, yeah, yeah
JT Spangler: and Independence Day, Twister, this, and then The Rock. I think Jerry McGuire is in the top 10 too.
Jeff: Nice!
JT Spangler: I think. Cruise has two of the top ten movies this year.
Jeff: the
JT Spangler: Pretty good.
Jeff: Yeah, i guess I guess if you're crazy, it's easy to just knock them out.
JT Spangler: Pretty good showing.
JT Spangler: Yeah, dude What? um were Can you imagine? i Tom Cruise doesn't have any hobbies. I mean, he has hobbies like I'm gonna learn how to fly a plane even higher, but like he's not.
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: He's not like crocheting or playing fantasy football. He's just like.
Jeff: no
JT Spangler: Do he's working?
Jeff: But would you be shocked if you were like, hey, by the way, ah Tom Cruise won his fantasy league the last nine years in a row? I would be like, yeah yeah, I believe it.
JT Spangler: Have a good day.
Jeff: He's done so much stuff. He's been around forever.
JT Spangler: I'll be shocked. ah I don't think he's ever sat down and watched a football game front to back.
Jeff: Really?
Jeff: He was standing on the couch and jumping up and down when he was watching it.
JT Spangler: Well, I mean, dude, did you, I mean, you saw Top Gun Maverick. They were playing football with two quarterbacks. That's not how that shit works. This guy's not watching the NFL. He's not logged in.
Jeff: I saw him play volleyball in the original and that looked very realistic. He was just Hanging out with the boys. Just a lot of sweaty men and jeans in sand.
JT Spangler: Yeah. Yeah, just. Do that. I love to play volleyball in tight jeans and no shirt. That's my that's my workout clothes right there.
Jeff: In sand.
JT Spangler: Yeah, because when I play beach volleyball, I'm thinking to myself, is there a way to put more chafing in this?
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Yes, tight denim.
Jeff: Oh, no thank you.
JT Spangler: A dog tag slapped me in the face every time I try and jump.
Jeff: No thank you. Ah. I do need the tape on my hands though, because that makes it better.
JT Spangler: Peace. Yeah, the volleyballs are rough. People don't know that, but you want to...
Jeff: but
JT Spangler: Clap your hands.
Jeff: Some of the balls will be rough by the end of that.
JT Spangler: um Yeah.
Jeff: The end of that match.
JT Spangler: Some of them are very smooth. ah Sequels. In spinoffs, there's an absolute shit pile.
Jeff: uh yeah there's eight total movies this one starts it off and then they go 2000 2006 2011 2015 2018 2023 2025
JT Spangler: Yes, and that doesn't count the original movie from the 60s.
Jeff: Right. the The one really based on the...
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: on the TV show.
JT Spangler: That's just this bunch of movies. There's also like... a half dozen video games at least.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Bye -bye. The original 60s TV show like there's a There's an absolute crap ton of Mission Impossible stuff.
Jeff: I like how ah Ving Rhames is in all of them, dude. He's got the meat and he...
JT Spangler: Me too.
Jeff: Did you know he was that guy?
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: I... I knew that he was that guy once I heard him and i after I read it. but before that i don't think i ever put that that was ving rames
JT Spangler: Yeah. We talked about it on the podcast when we did another Vingery.
Jeff: Did we?
JT Spangler: Movie, yeah. Yeah.
Jeff: Golly, I heard it and now I was like, God, that does sound like Bing Bams.
JT Spangler: Was it maybe... Was maybe we did Dave? so I feel like turtlenecks make my neck look. pick.
Jeff: yeah Oh, yeah, that's got to be the one we did it in.
JT Spangler: That's a big range, right?
Jeff: i Dude, I feel like I forgot that we talked about that because I read it and I was like, oh, I got to hear it. And I go find it on YouTube and I'm like, oh, that's definitely Ving Rhames. Of course it is, Jackass. We already talked about it.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: My bad.
JT Spangler: Yeah, we've been there dude tom cruise ah His... Total box office gross for his lifetime. is $13 .4 billion. dollars
Jeff: that's pretty gross
JT Spangler: He
Jeff: That's a lot.
JT Spangler: He is seven on the top ten. gros highest grossing actors. Uh, Eight. are from Marvel. The other eight.
Jeff: Yeah. Yeah, I could see that.
JT Spangler: Like it's everybody. It's Tom Holland, Zoe Saldana, Chris Scarlett Johansson, Chris Pratt, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans. The only person on there. the Isn't Marvel.
JT Spangler: And isn't Tom Cruise. is Vin Diesel. Who?
Jeff: Nice.
JT Spangler: Also Marvel, by the way. but also free.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Uh,
Jeff: Wait, yeah. so
JT Spangler: And Fast and the Furious movies.
Jeff: Wait, does that count, though? Like, he's Gru, so that counts, though, right?
JT Spangler: Yes. Yeah, that counts towards us.
Jeff: Yes. sir
JT Spangler: So the whole, is it's nine Marvel actors and Tom Cruise on the top grossing actors of all time.
Jeff: Man, that's awesome.
JT Spangler: Like that tells you.
Jeff: they should They should put him in Marvel and really let him just take the number one spot.
JT Spangler: Yeah. Tune. I'm sure he's probably been offered, but he's busy producing stuff.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: He's producing he's got he's got a couple more movies coming out this year that look horrible that might actually be good. I don't know.
Jeff: The Digger? I've been re...
JT Spangler: Yeah. that shit terrible.
Jeff: i've been I've been reading about it. Some people are kind of liking it.
JT Spangler: Yeah. People that Tom Cruise is going on their podcast to talk to them are liking it because Tom Cruise doesn't do press. That tells you how bad the movie's going to be. He's decided to do podcasts. That's how bad the tracking is on the release.
Jeff: I think he looks like the... character he plays on The army movie. thing where Robert Downey Jr. is the black guy?
JT Spangler: Yeah, Tropic Thunder.
Jeff: Yeah, yeah He's got like the belly and the freaking comb over. I like that. It makes me feel like Tom Cruise is actually 60. even though.
JT Spangler: Yeah. 64th.
Jeff: He doesn't really.
JT Spangler: Dude.
Jeff: Cheers!
JT Spangler: Do you know how...
Jeff: 64.
JT Spangler: Do you know how old John Voight was in this movie?
Jeff: no
JT Spangler: 57. And Tom Cruise did another installment of this last year. He was 63. He was hanging on a goddamn airplane.
Jeff: ah Dude, John Voight didn't look like he was 57, man. Wear your sunscreen, kids. That is...
JT Spangler: Well, yeah
Jeff: Not.
JT Spangler: The only giveaway was that he had all white hair and Tom Cruise's hair is all black.
Jeff: Oof. Yeah.
JT Spangler: My hair is not all black. I'm 46. Um, But cool. Whatever.
Jeff: Yeah. Dude, speaking of that, Jason Statham is in some like Discover commercial where he's in the middle of ah ah like a museum or something.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: I saw it on during a football game. He dyed all of this completely black. And I was like. Jason Statham, that's not. You're way too old.
JT Spangler: Yeah, dude.
Jeff: There's no way. It's unnaturally black.
JT Spangler: And. eight He's way younger than Tom Cruise. uh but yeah do you remember when you first saw this i feel like
Jeff: Huh.
JT Spangler: This was in May. I probably would have saw this in the theaters with my dad because I'm 16.
Jeff: ah Yeah. yeah yeah he would let you see this right it's just 13 pg -13 yeah
JT Spangler: Like this type of movie, this type of movie. ah Yeah, oh, I mean, he would 100 % let me see this. This is the type of movie he and I would go see together, like an action movie.
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: where like there might be some brief nudity, but not a lot.
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: So.
Jeff: Just a little side of a piece of a titty.
JT Spangler: Right.
Jeff: Um, ah Dude, I remember renting this and it was only for the one night. Remember how the new releases were only one night?
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: uh and then you had to bring them back the next day by noon or whatever it was I remember watching it that night and then watching it again the next morning.
JT Spangler: Good night, all.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: ah to make sure that I really. Got it all in there.
JT Spangler: Yeah, really absorb it.
Jeff: um yeah And then I remember buying it on DVD.
JT Spangler: Looking for hidden messages.
Jeff: Yeah, I bought it on DVD at... when that was a thing.
JT Spangler: Yeah. So.
Jeff: So.
JT Spangler: ah Tom Cruise produces this movie with his producing partner, Paula Wagner. And they were. partnered with Paramount. In fact, I think they were they were underneath Paramount's... studio umbrella at this point in time and when they eventually parted ways in like 2013
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Paramount said that it was because Tom Cruise had become... Like. you know, That was when he was like jumping on couches and I was like, this dude is weird. hey They claimed it was because of his public image, but this...
JT Spangler: Like, the real story supposedly was... They didn't like how big of a percentage of the DVD sales. Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner's production company got from Mission Impossible. So like those, you said but buying the DVD, like they had such a big chunk of that that it made them so much money that Paramount eventually was like, we got it. Get rid of this guy because.
Jeff: Yeah, can't.
JT Spangler: Thank you. we can
Jeff: Oh man, that's ah that's a good deal to make though. Like...
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: to have the forethought that it's going to be that big.
JT Spangler: Yeah, dude, and he got out just in time because no one's bought a DVD since 2013.
Jeff: Um,
JT Spangler: Where do you rate it?
Jeff: I do that. This is some original Mission Impossible badassery. All the ones after this, I feel get better. I'm not saying this is the best mission impossible.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: it's not the worst But it's not the best. And do you need this one to watch any of the ones after that? I don't think you do.
JT Spangler: No.
Jeff: But I still put this at an eight because it. Dude, 8 .0 is where it lands because it was super. um
Jeff: spy thriller type stuff. And I like that. And i I can appreciate how ah how it was put together. And they didn't. Do the exposition like you talked about in the beginning. That's like one of the first things I saw. I was like, wait, who's doing what now? Where's this guy? I don't understand. And then you catch up by just taking the clues in. I freaking love that.
Jeff: I love it So I gave it an eight.
JT Spangler: this one This one, i I agree, is not the best of the eight. It's also certainly not the worst. I don't think they just get better and better and better.
Jeff: Meow.
JT Spangler: i thought like the The last one. a ghost reckoning or dead reckoning or some kind of reckoning. with the
Jeff: Final.
JT Spangler: Final reckoning. Good one. Um, i like People got really mad at that one and it was because there were so many callbacks and so much fan service, and I freaking loved it. But there's a couple in the middle.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: that i Because I rewatched a bunch of them. when that one came out because there were so many callbacks I was like let me go I'm gonna go re -watch I didn't do this one because I knew we'd do it on the podcast I started with the second one and then I watched all the way up and I was like.
Jeff: Yeah.
Jeff: Yeah. Dude, what'd you think of number two? Because I also watched the second one just recently.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: John Woo. Hmm.
JT Spangler: John Woo.
Jeff: Meh.
JT Spangler: And some of them are some them were like, oh, I forgot this was not that good.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: But I guess in the year it came out, I was like, hell yeah, let's do this. But then watching them all in rows, like some of these are not as good. as the others.
Jeff: ah
JT Spangler: But this one like lays the groundwork. I didn't. Brian De Palma directs. He's like. and An incredibly renowned director. I didn't. like the direction that much for this.
Jeff: W -W -
JT Spangler: But it sets the stage, like the whole like... <unk> It's a team. We're on a mission. We get a DVD on a plane and then it freaking explodes.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: And then...
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: We all put on our fake faces and we go break into an embassy and like someone. get shot and then we've
Jeff: Delightful
JT Spangler: Like... Dude, it's all they're all like that. And it.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: It was great. But I also got 8 out of 10.
Jeff: Dude. I...
JT Spangler: It's an hour and 50. It's a little bit long. The direction is weird.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: And. That's really it. that's ah Otherwise, it's awesome.
Jeff: Alright. So the only thing, when you said direction is weird, I wanted to ask you if you think this has got to be director, but also cinematographer maybe. There's a couple of scenes where it's like... The camera feels like it's right here on one of the characters, and there's like a blur on the edge of their face, and this is also in focus back here, and some shit's going down over here at the same time.
JT Spangler: Yes.
Jeff: Whatever that's called, I don't like it, and they did it a lot in here.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
JT Spangler: They did it a lot. And so that's... That particular technique definitely is a name that we don't know because we're not. uh film nerd
Jeff: Yeah!
JT Spangler: But.
Jeff: We probably should have looked it up.
JT Spangler: That's it. No, i looked I looked this up for another movie recently because it's... Either requires that you use a special... camera lens that has like kind of like bifocals type of situation, or you have to like shoot.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: with two cameras and like kind of composite them together, but to have something in the foreground and focus and then also something in the background and focus.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Sometimes you have to have like a pillar or something that where you like split the shot. They did it in All the President's Men with Robert Redford, like back in the day. It's one of the famous examples of it.
Jeff: My favorite. what
JT Spangler: Yeah. This is your jam. um I love that technique, but the whole like... cameras like down low and on the side of someone's face. It seemed like we were doing that a lot.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: I don't know if it was the cinematographer. I don't know if it's the director.
Jeff: Yeah, I don't know
JT Spangler: And so I'm going to talk it first. was um
Jeff: Purim.
JT Spangler: Stephen, Stephen Burham. Um, I mean. I don't know, dude. he's Got an Academy Award nomination for Hoffa. He worked with Francis Ford Coppola and Brian De Palma.
Jeff: Yeah, he does a lot of De Palma stuff.
JT Spangler: Brian. Like everybody involved in this movie was like at the top of their crafts. It's not like they hired someone shitty. I just think they made a choice that when I watched it, I was like. All right. Wish we didn't do that.
Jeff: Right. Right. Um, Maybe we'll talk about it when we get to effects. The taking off the mask. that becomes like a thing in the first at least the first five or six
JT Spangler: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, and then eventually the Macs become digital and they just like press a button in the friggin Stuff goes away.
Jeff: Um,
Jeff: So how how do they do that in 96?
JT Spangler: and
Jeff: Act 2.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: It was good.
JT Spangler: I think in, I think in 96, they actually did put a mask on them. They just probably made it worse. Easy to peel off. Cause I think. ah Typically, they were not easy to peel off.
Jeff: Man, it's it looked really good. When he took off the John Voight head and I was like, oh, snap. That looked really good.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: I forgot that was not.
JT Spangler: I forgot that was coming. i
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: I knew there was going to be one time when he pretended to be someone else, but I forgot it was that moment. I was like, hell yeah, let's do this.
Jeff: Yeah. Yeah. yeah
JT Spangler: All right, let's do let's do scenes top three scenes. What's your first?
Jeff: Um, ah not chronological, just my favorite one is gotta be the CIA vault where he's hanging from the ceiling and he's doing the.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: the balancing thing without hitting the ground. Um,
JT Spangler: That's my first one. That's the most iconic. one in this movie it's the one that's been parodied a million times it's the one that you've seen like clips of him like climbing in the freaking vent like you see like die mean with him climbing in the vent
Jeff: Right.
Jeff: Yeah. Yeah.
JT Spangler: Um... Like I even remember like him, like catching a drop of sweat. with his hand.
Jeff: Mm hmm.
JT Spangler: God.
Jeff: I love the the lead up to that is fantastic too.
JT Spangler: as she was
Jeff: Like when he's telling them all the stuff, Oh, it gets better. You know, you gotta, to you gotta to get past this and do this and this. um Dude. It was awesome. Like. The whole...
Jeff: What's the thing everybody's trying to get in all the stories? MacGuffin.
JT Spangler: Let me get them.
Jeff: yeah so like he's trying to get the disc and the disc is in there by the way old school floppy discs and like little like hard.
JT Spangler: Old school.
Jeff: plastic with the disc the CD in the middle.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: That was cool.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Um, And he can't make a sound and he can't make a frigging, he can't make himself hot. Can't make it hot. Dude, it was great. And then the mouse in the thing and he's going to kill it and then catch it again.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Money.
JT Spangler: it's ah the It's kind of, I mean, it's... It's ludicrous. Because the guy, like...
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: He's working in a freaking giant. white tower where the whole thing's made of lights. And it's...
Jeff: You know...
JT Spangler: It's got like a huge sign, like a gas station open close sign that says like... countermeasures active. And like.
Jeff: Oh, yeah.
JT Spangler: Dude, me and you could never work in there because we both have to pee a lot. and Getting in and out of there took like 10 minutes.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: You got to like do your retinal scan. You got to do the thumbprint. You got to talk to a secretary. I'm like, I...
Jeff: Yeah, that old lady's going to get up and turn the key again. She's like, god okay.
JT Spangler: Yeah. I would have to keep a pee bottle at that desk.
Jeff: Heh.
JT Spangler: Because you could get in a... I was like, this is... Completely ridiculous. But I freaking love it, dude.
Jeff: Amen. Yeah. um Did you watch any of the behind the scenes thing? Because they didn't show it, but they talked about how Tom Cruise filled his shoes with coins.
Jeff: Because every time he would drop down and he was supposed to stop right before he hit the thing, his face was hitting the ground.
JT Spangler: Yeah. but
Jeff: And it's because it wasn't balanced right. And he figured out if he just makes his bottom end a little heavier. So he figured out that he could just put coins in his shoes.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: I was like, where are the coins?
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: What are we? What?
JT Spangler: the probably in the They're probably in the lifts that make him two inches taller.
Jeff: I needed to see it.
JT Spangler: um He should have worn some ankle weights, some freaking cold -ass ankle weights like my mom in the 80s.
Jeff: Just take... Damn.
Jeff: to take the Take the lifts out, fill it up with quarters, to call it a day.
JT Spangler: did Well, also this... ah The guy that... computer nerd guy.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: It's cool. Like. He... Like the so Kittredge, the head of the CIA or whoever.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: is late. After that whole heist. He's like yelling at one of his other guys. He's he's like. I want a man in a radar tower in Alaska. By the end of the day, just mail him his clothes.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: And then in the freaking eighth movie. That guy's in Alaska with a huge -ass beard, manning a radar tower, and he's still got the knife.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: from this. Movie.
Jeff: Great callback.
JT Spangler: And I was like, God, dude.
Jeff: Great callback.
JT Spangler: so So being able to see this one after having seen that one in theaters last year, I was like, I've seen all that shit.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Like that's fantastic.
Jeff: that's But that's the kind of callbacks I like that a lot of people... that just watch them in whatever order. uh don't like and i and
JT Spangler: Yeah, that's why people were like, oh, it's fan service. Like, dude, that was awesome. That was a throwaway line. And then dude actually was in Alaska for 30 years. in the world of the movie still had the knife.
Jeff: Yeah. That's great. Great.
JT Spangler: That's my first scene too. That's the... Most memorable scene from this movie, no doubt.
Jeff: Um... I'm gonna try to walk around with coins in my shoes tomorrow and see how it works out.
JT Spangler: Yeah, dude That'd be great. If you have to fall. Well, so you definitely have the same problem because your top half is a lot heavier than your bottom half.
Jeff: I know that my face wouldn't hit the ground first, that's for sure.
JT Spangler: Huh. Dude. Dude, I saw him. I still don't know if it's real or if it was a meme, but it was just like... unbelievably morbidly obese guy. just like doing a plank, laying on the ground. with his elbows. and his belly's touching the ground and his feet are like up in the air and it's like ah So -and -so sets a Guinness Book of World Record for 12 -hour plank, and the comments are just full of people going like...
JT Spangler: How can we? on the ground for 12 hours too.
Jeff: No.
JT Spangler: like He's not.
Jeff: Ah, that's great.
JT Spangler: Sometimes the Internet's.
Jeff: That's great.
JT Spangler: That's pretty great.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: What's your second scene?
Jeff: Um, The second scene I had was in the channel. Um,
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: I do have some. issues with it because I don't understand why the helicopters followed them into the thing because they had already unhooked it.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: but uh it's completely ridiculous completely wonderful Um, I like how John Voight gets off and then. gets off of the train. and then what's his nuts follows him and then he's like red light green light and do the whole thing and then ah the explosion even like how fast is the train going in the channel fast i think right it's not like a
JT Spangler: Good thing.
Jeff: so It's not like an Amtrak rolling through. freaking downtown a meet it's like It's moving. So that explosion. From the tiny little piece of gum blew him up onto the train. And I was like, okay. Uh, but I did the whole time I was eating popcorn. Just like.
Jeff: Loving it. so
JT Spangler: It's... It's ludicrous.
Jeff: I put it on there.
JT Spangler: I think in the time at the time that it came out, it was probably... And it still is an incredible stunt sequence, but it it makes no sense. The guy flying the helicopter.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Um, who I always think of as like scary Gerard Depardieu.
Jeff: correct
JT Spangler: Uh, even though he's not really. It's just I I just kept thinking like is that like gerard day produce scarier cousin
Jeff: Oh man.
JT Spangler: His name for real is... Is Jean Reno?
Jeff: Jean Reno.
JT Spangler: Which makes me think he's related to Janet Reno, but he's definitely not.
Jeff: Yeah.
Jeff: It's...
JT Spangler: Um, But yeah, he's flying the world's tiniest helicopter.
Jeff: Ugh.
JT Spangler: in the f freaking channel. It's... It's... It's crazy. The more we do like action movies and spy movies, the more I realize how much the guy who wrote author. um Archer ripped them all off.
Jeff: Yeah. Oh yeah, yeah.
JT Spangler: Because like the whole... breaking into the vault, fighting on top of the train. like
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Jumping onto to a helicopter.
Jeff: Yeah. yeah
JT Spangler: I've seen so many of those Archer episodes and I was like du
Jeff: I So...
JT Spangler: It was great.
Jeff: You think... ah um ah Jean Reno. Do you think he could have like actually slowed the helicopter down if he hadn't tried to chop?
Jeff: Tom Cruise in half with the rotor. And is that the best move?
JT Spangler: Um,
Jeff: like what
JT Spangler: And. and Dude, we've talked about this before. And neither of us are helicopter pilots. We're not Tom Cruise. but if i'm man
Jeff: I can ask Ackerman. He is. He is.
JT Spangler: If I am a helicopter pilot. Because this just, dude, this just happened in Broken Arrow.
Jeff: Mm hmm.
JT Spangler: If I'm a helicopter pilot, the one thing I don't want to do with my helicopter is use the thing that keep the helicopter floating. as the weapon. I just want. to not die in a helicopter crash.
Jeff: ah Um,
JT Spangler: but You know, that's why I'm not Janet Reno, Gerard Depardieu's scarier cousin.
Jeff: Yeah.
Jeff: Zero dip -a -doo. um
JT Spangler: my My next scene is the one right after the Langley knock list heist. They go back to the wherever. and uh He's talking to Janet Reno. and uh And Reno's like, I got the disc.
JT Spangler: And he's like. He's like, oh, you mean this disc? and He's like doing close -up magic, and he's just...
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: She's just mind -fucking him? and the And then at the end of it. Janet Reno just like walks out of the room confused. He's like, yeah, he's like He had the real disc. I just tricked him.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: And then Vain Reigns is trying to do the magic trick.
Jeff: That's freaking great. Yeah, he's in the background trying to do it. Amen.
JT Spangler: But it's also like... He figures, I think that's right then is when he figures out the Drake Hotel thing. He's like looking in the Bible and sees a Drake Hotel and he realizes that. John Voight.
Jeff: Yeah, because he because he had already said that earlier in the movie.
JT Spangler: is actually. Yeah.
Jeff: Yeah, that part was...
JT Spangler: is actually Job.
Jeff: See, like... I don't think that it's that hard to follow. Again, I've seen it before when I watched it this time.
JT Spangler: no
Jeff: But like. I have also taught. ah people that are 17, 18 year olds that are ah people that are probably ah aimed at this, this movie's aimed towards. And they would not get it.
Jeff: Like if I showed them this one time through and gave them but a quiz. they would not do well on it.
JT Spangler: Yeah. I will say there's a couple of spots in this movie. That's one of the spots that if you go pee and come back five minutes later, you're going to be a little confused.
Jeff: Yeah, you what the what? Yeah. Um,
JT Spangler: But that's true of any movie. If you miss a key section, you're going to go like, I don't. What's that guy? Who's that guy? What did that guy say when I said who's that guy?
Jeff: what's the What's the website you can go to and it tells you when to go pee in the movies?
JT Spangler: i don't know you're always telling me about it i just go pee when i gotta to go pee
Jeff: Ugh. so Oh, man. it's It's like an actual... Run P. It's runp .com.
JT Spangler: yeah
Jeff: Oh, man. I want to know. If there's a thing for this movie. Mission Impossible. the original. No, they don't have it.
Jeff: Nevermind.
JT Spangler: Yeah. Yeah, because everyone watching this at home, you just press pause.
Jeff: They...
Jeff: Yeah. Ugh.
JT Spangler: What's your third?
Jeff: That's... That's awesome.
JT Spangler: What's your third scene?
Jeff: ah Dude, I forgot that the entire restaurant was filled with an aquarium and I forgot that whole thing blows up.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Um,
JT Spangler: I like. one.
Jeff: i liked it and not only did i like how tom cruise played that thing when that part where um Your boy, what's the the leader? He's the Kittredge.
JT Spangler: Kittredge.
Jeff: He's like. He's like telling him. about the whole thing and he's starting to figure it out and he's pointing out the people that were standing behind her on the stairs while she was uh while they were doing the thing in in the uh in the party and oh there's guy over here and this was part of them they're all um imf agents and he was figuring it all out Um,
Jeff: And then he does the gum thing and freaking slams it to the the glass and it blows up. um I watched the behind the scenes part. They showed how they did that. Unbelievable.
Jeff: It was really good. And also they tried it. Like three times. with a stunt double, and it didn't look right. So Tom Cruise just says, He just turns into, what's his name from Fox News?
Jeff: He's like. and we'll do it live and he just decides to do it himself and uh he was he was in there coins in his shoes and just running out of the running out of the water
JT Spangler: Nice.
Jeff: uh dude I like that whole part.
JT Spangler: Tom Creaser on. I like that.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: thing i I wrote it down. It didn't make my top three, but I like because he's sitting with Kittredge. Henry Cerny, the actor who plays him.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: I like. I like that because Cherni is a very famous. Czech name in this movie set in Prague.
Jeff: Nice.
JT Spangler: So.
Jeff: Yeah, doesn't he spell it with a Z?
JT Spangler: that you know
Jeff: It's like C -Z -E, yeah.
JT Spangler: Yes. Yeah. And he's Canadian. He doesn't claim like to be Czech, but.
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: I like that connection.
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: But yeah, he's so he's like consoling Ethan, huh? He's like, I'm sorry. and and And then. tom cruise ethan hunt's like so you start to see how much he's paying attention to he's like He's like kitchen's like, I'm not sure if I'm following you.
JT Spangler: He's like, well, follow me around the room. He's like, because those people over there. We're at the stairs. and the thing and like he was behind her he was pretending to be a waiter and like he was You're in the alley.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: They were like stumbling out, pretending to be drunk. He's like, so why?
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: your second team. while we were there.
Jeff: Hmm.
JT Spangler: And you got like, du dude, he's freaking.
Jeff: He's figured it all out.
JT Spangler: paying attention to shit. I like like what's the remember that movie uh i think it's maybe even it's called like spy game or something Brad Pitt. And it's like, They're like sitting in a cafe and he's like looking at the reflection from the napkin holder. He's like.
JT Spangler: Noticing shit.
Jeff: Yeah yeah yeah.
JT Spangler: Like. pre See, there's always that moment in the spy movies where they're noticing shit. I love that.
Jeff: Is it spy game? I think it is, now that you say that.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: I like that one
JT Spangler: me
Jeff: Dude, and that's the same as those... um Like the TV show, The Mentalist or Psych and stuff like that, where they can like see stuff just walking through the room. It's freaking amazing.
JT Spangler: Yeah. Spy Game, Tony Scott. ah featuring Brad Pitt and your man. Robert Redford.
Jeff: Yeah. Oh, God, what a jerk.
JT Spangler: He's everywhere you can't get away from him
Jeff: Um. You can't. It's just I'm knee deep in Robert Redford.
JT Spangler: I mean, he died, but we we got a lot of Robert Redford still coming on the podcast.
Jeff: Yeah, I could I could definitely then, if he's dead, be knee deep in him. um the i do that I had an extra best scene. It's the one you talked about where he's talking to Jon Voight. And he's watching all the replays in his head and it's confusing the audience.
JT Spangler: yeah That's my third.
Jeff: and Oh, that's you?
JT Spangler: That's my.
Jeff: Oh, snap. My bad. I was thinking that was. The last one was your third.
JT Spangler: Yeah. Yeah, no, my third is when he meets with Jon Voight and they're like sitting down and he's having that.
Jeff: Peace. So good.
JT Spangler: And he's... the heat. Ethan is having the flashbacks. He's trying to figure out how everyone died. And Jon Voight's telling him what happened. And he's like picturing it. And you can see like he'll picture what Jon Voight's saying. And then he'll be like, that can't be right. And then he'll picture the way. He thinks it really happened. and But he's sitting there and pretending. He's like, oh, man, that's so crazy. You got away. He's like, what should we do now? But really, like, he's figured it out.
JT Spangler: And so like...
Jeff: Dude.
JT Spangler: the last act of the movie, he's like, Working with John Boyd.
Jeff: It's so good
JT Spangler: that Jon Voight's fucked him over. But he's trying to figure out if Jon Voight's wife. um claire in the movie but ah emmanuel bayart or however you pronounce her French name.
Jeff: Bayard, yeah.
JT Spangler: Like if she's on it, she's internet too. Cause she's been working with him and he's like, all right, I got to figure out. If she was with him. Or if she didn't know. And i so he's tried doing all that stuff.
Jeff: that Dude, just the visual. uh deduction like him figuring it out and they don't give a lot of exposition it's just john voight's words versus what you're seeing on the screen God, dude, it's that was... diploma killed it on that one that was a good way to do that
JT Spangler: Yeah, like that.
Jeff: i should have moved I should have moved that up above the aquarium because I put it as an extra scene, but it was good. It was good.
JT Spangler: No, the aquarium one was badass too. I'm glad you picked that one. There's some really good like stunt work in this movie.
Jeff: Yeah. Yeah, they did it they did a good job. And not a lot of Tom Cruise running. He ran. But normally the camera's like right in front of him and he's doing the thing with the fast hands.
JT Spangler: You're in a couple of minutes.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: There wasn't that in this that a lot.
JT Spangler: Yeah. let's do Let's do quotes.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: What's your first quote?
Jeff: Ugh. It's when they're about to talk about going to the... gone to Langley and he's like, ah relax, Luther, it's much worse than you think.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: ah because then he has to break it down. I freaking love that. That's fantastic.
JT Spangler: I contemplated that one. Surprisingly, there weren't a lot of quotes. um i wrote down in the moment when i was looking back afterwards i was like i actually we're a good amount of quotes They just weren't funny.
Jeff: Yeah.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Usually I write down funny quotes.
Jeff: Right, that's my... That's my problem. Yeah.
JT Spangler: Yeah, my first one is ah in the ah in the aquarium restaurant. And. ah And Kittredge is like, hey, he's like she's like, take it easy. Don't get upset. And and Tom Krasinski's Kittredge. You've never seen me very upset.
Jeff: See? Dude, the way he says that that's my second one. The way he says that I was like Tom Cruise. He making me believe it. I like it.
JT Spangler: Yeah. Yeah, the way he laid that one down, I was like, dude, that's a good quote. And it also always reminds me of ah you don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me if I'm angry.
Jeff: You will. I agree. Yeah, dude, that's my second quote. What's your second?
JT Spangler: My second one is I want a Manninger radar tower in Alaska by the end of the day.
Jeff: Because of the throwback.
JT Spangler: Can I sit here?
Jeff: Ah.
JT Spangler: Yeah, dude, because we see that guy 30 years later still in that freaking radar tower with his heavy -ass beard. Still with the night from Janet Reno.
Jeff: time ah Like... Do you think like the people are just like, we need to have the fan service in there? Or do you think like. ah Oh, well, they're going to be in someplace cold.
Jeff: Why don't we just make it Alaska and put that same dude in there? Like...
JT Spangler: Yeah, I don't know because that one they had to go like to a radar station and they were they were trying to track down a Russian sub. I'm sure they were probably thinking like, what from the first couple movies can we like work back in?
Jeff: Right, right. very
JT Spangler: And I was like, that's a great one.
Jeff: Um,
JT Spangler: Okay. ah My third one, I didn't. I mean it's not like I just feel like I had to put it. Your mission, should you choose to accept it.
Jeff: Yeah, I didn't have a third one. That's a good one, though. Like...
JT Spangler: they just had but They've been doing it since 1966. It's classic.
Jeff: Yeah. I do like too, though, that it's like... The first one is 96 that we're doing.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: um And they asked, you know, Jean Boyd, would you like to watch a movie? And he's like, pick one for me. And they give him a cassette tape that.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: kept when fire and the smoke comes out. By the time we get to John Woo in 2000, he's wearing Oakleys that like say stuff and it's got stuff in his ear and he throws it and it blows up right in the beginning.
JT Spangler: ah Yeah, and they blow up.
Jeff: Um...
JT Spangler: While he's rock climbing. That rock climbing opening sequence is badass.
Jeff: Yeah, dude. Ice cold. This... I know we shit on Tom Cruise for being a weirdo, but I love all of his movies almost.
JT Spangler: i I don't take it away from his skill as an actor. I've been very... open about that. I just don't think he's a good person.
Jeff: Now is that.
JT Spangler: and I don't think being awesome in movies. Shit.
Jeff: No.
JT Spangler: That's like we talk I was talking about this with somebody a couple of days ago. I'm like we don't I'm not going to focus on, like... Cuba Gooding Jr. wins the Oscar for Jerry Maguire. Incredible performance. Cuba Gooding Jr. credibly accused of sexual assault by a bunch of people.
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: we don't have to Spend a lot of time on that. The podcast is about sexual assault, but I got to at least say.
Jeff: But we should say it. Right.
JT Spangler: what People go, like yeah, man, Cuba Gooding Jr., he's the best.
Jeff: No.
JT Spangler: Maybe not the best. Very good actor.
Jeff: no
JT Spangler: Possibly not the best.
Jeff: it's the best Has he seen Boat Trip?
JT Spangler: eight percent
Jeff: Call that person up.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: He needs to see Bo Trip.
JT Spangler: Dude, I love boat trip.
Jeff: It was so funny.
JT Spangler: um
Jeff: Who was the guy that was opposite of him? The comedy guy? Horatio Sands? No.
JT Spangler: I was going to say Horatio Sands, but yeah, dude, it's Horatio Sands.
Jeff: I... Oh, God, that movie was funny. I'm going to watch that again.
JT Spangler: Dude. Bye. them a big fan
Jeff: Who's the girl? You got it pulled up? Who's the girl in that? She kind of reminded me of Toni Braxton a little bit.
JT Spangler: Yeah. Vivek A. Fox and Rosalind Sanchez.
Jeff: Rosalind Sanchez, that's the one.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Yes.
JT Spangler: Boat trips good. I think.
Jeff: ah
JT Spangler: it It made $15 million. dollars So when 2002 rolls around. We'll see if we have room for it. I feel feel sure we probably do.
Jeff: I like how we're both like, boat trip was awesome. Kingpin, meh. And people are just so angry about it.
JT Spangler: Dude. Yeah, people people are two weeks later still. commenting on TikTok about how mad they are that we didn't like Kingpin. We don't think any of those people have seen Kingpin in a long time.
JT Spangler: But.
Jeff: Yeah. You should watch it again.
JT Spangler: There's no doubt. The internet is not happy about that. Um, Let's do characters. My number one character is Ethan Hunt, Tom Cruise.
Jeff: Yeah, why dude, why would it not be? He's... Like. I like how he has a little more edge than he does in the later movies. I mean, I know he's younger, but like...
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Um, I don't know, dude. he's almost He's like a superhero by the time you get to... you know, Ghost Protocol. Isn't that the one where he's climbing up the Burj Khalifa?
JT Spangler: Yeah, I think that's the climbing the Burj Khalifa one.
Jeff: Like. Like dude. I like that. But this one, it's like he has to do regular people stuff. like um He's just running away from explosions and dodging.
Jeff: Dodging punches. I like it. Like it's not superhuman.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: I like this Ethan Hunt, but. Again, he's only 33.
JT Spangler: Well, a lot of the a lot of the stuff. though. like that we that you see in other movies starts here and it's But like, this is the first movie that his production company does. he Forms the production company with Paula Wagner in 1992. Partners with Paramount. Paramount's been trying to adapt The Mission Impossible.
JT Spangler: TV stuff. And Tom Cruise is like, I like that.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Let's do it. And like.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: They're trying to do it with Sidney Pollack. And like he meets. Brian De Palma um while he's doing another movie. And he goes back and watches like all the Brian De Palma shit.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: And he's like. he's my, yeah that's my guy right there. And he's like, all This whole... eight movie series it's grossed billions of dollars doesn't happen without Tom Cruise. Like, not like...
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: You can't recast him. This shit doesn't get made.
Jeff: Right, right. right Um... Yeah, dude, I just pull up Paula Wagner, all of all the stuff that she I mean, it's a lot of Tom Cruise movies also. Um, But dude, she's done a lot of she's doing a lot stuff.
JT Spangler: Yeah. Absolutely.
Jeff: That's good good. Good stuff. Mission Impossible 3, it looks like the last Mission Impossible she does with them.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: um
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: That's great. That's great.
JT Spangler: But like. But. De Palma, like... Directs. Scarface. Uh...
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: The Untouchables. Like he's done. some incredible movies. It's weird because... I don't really love Scarface. because I'm not a rapper, but ah the Untouchables is just freaking great. If that's what I'm saying.
Jeff: Um,
JT Spangler: favorites.
Jeff: Dude, I love Untouchables. ah Dude, he does Carlitos Way with...
JT Spangler: Carly Deswey.
Jeff: um With a... Pacino?
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: um i i gotta to be honest i like so Nicholas Cage in Snake Eyes. What?
JT Spangler: I liked it. I liked Snake Eye.
Jeff: Because that was... Weird.
JT Spangler: I think we're going to find out that it's not that great of a movie when we watch it in two years.
Jeff: Yeah. of Of course we are. Of course we are. Um.
Jeff: Dude, I like Brian De Palma. I think the stuff he does is great. um
JT Spangler: who's your Who's your next character?
Jeff: It's Luther. Ving Rhames.
JT Spangler: Look there. Me too.
Jeff: He's got the meat.
JT Spangler: He's got the meat. He's my second.
Jeff: Um,
JT Spangler: is in every movie.
Jeff: to
JT Spangler: except Uh... No, he's in every movie. He's in every mission.
Jeff: He's an elm.
JT Spangler: Bye.
Jeff: He's an old dude. And they were going to kill him off in this one. And Tom Cruise had to go in and say like. I like this guy and he needs to be in the next one. Cause you know, we're going to make more.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: This is turning out to be a movie that we like. I think we're going to have to make more and we need to have Luther in this.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Um, Dude, I freaking love his voice. I love his style. I like how he wears fedoras that just... barely fit on his huge noggin. I love the whole thing.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: and There's nothing I don't like about Ving Rhames. And his character is fantastic.
JT Spangler: Yeah. It's a great character he gets So far, 29 years of work out of this role. And then they got killed off in the last one, 2025. So.
Jeff: Spoiler.
JT Spangler: What's up? Yeah. Good one. Got eight movies out of it over 29 years. Pretty good.
Jeff: Are we sure he's dead though?
JT Spangler: Uh, Pretty sure.
Jeff: up he was in the yeah He was in the catacombs doing the thing?
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Yeah, yeah.
JT Spangler: Yeah, you know that shit blew up big time. He was right in there.
Jeff: Yeah, but maybe he got out.
JT Spangler: ah Maybe he got out. Yeah, maybe he hid in the fridge like in an Indiana Jones movie.
Jeff: ah Dude, do you remember him in Con Air?
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: I freaking loved Ving Rhames and Con Air. Dude, that's awesome.
JT Spangler: Yeah. but um con air is coming in 97 i fucking cannot wait i love that movie
Jeff: It's great. It's great. All right.
JT Spangler: Thank you.
Jeff: Who's your next one?
JT Spangler: who's my My third is Claire Emanuel Bayart.
Jeff: Oh.
JT Spangler: Um,
Jeff: Dude. You know, I almost picked her, but i went I went the other way. I went with the other girl. So, that that dude, that's awesome. I'm glad you picked her.
JT Spangler: I thought she was really good, man. i didn't ah like She's one of those, like in this movie, I was like, I recognize her, but I don't know. If I've seen her in like a bunch of stuff. And then I look at her filmography and it's all in French. And I was like, nope, haven't seen her in a bunch of stuff. Just hearing a couple things.
Jeff: Um, I got to be honest, when she's French and I hear the word Emmanuel, I think of late night Cinemax stuff that.
JT Spangler: Emmanuel. Emmanuel in space.
Jeff: Right. That I used to used to not watch for sure.
JT Spangler: Yeah. yeah
Jeff: I wasn't watching that.
JT Spangler: Well, yeah, ESPN on the recent channel.
Jeff: So I could jump back. Um,
JT Spangler: yeah
Jeff: But I don't think she was in that. That's just a...
JT Spangler: That's just her.
Jeff: coincidence that that's her name.
JT Spangler: That's our actual, yeah.
Jeff: Yeah, yeah. um ah dude I went with Vanessa Redgrave. Um.
JT Spangler: I was thinking.
Jeff: The other...
JT Spangler: ah She was my other option because she was fantastic.
Jeff: Dude, I'm... She barely raises her voice. Like she, she's charming. uh she's like mysterious dude i I liked it. I thought she was like one of the most interesting characters. i The whole time.
Jeff: Like the only reason that I was thinking about not picking Claire is because I feel like. um they could have done more with her character like i'm not saying like she was but It was just underwritten. You know what I'm saying? like That's Ethan's mentors.
Jeff: ah wife and like she's secretly betraying the team and manipulating ethan the whole time and i liked all that but it just felt like it they were like rushing through her scenes And I just like the way. um max Max? Is that what it means?
JT Spangler: Yeah, Max.
Jeff: Vanessa Redgrave? Max. I like the way she did it. I thought she killed it.
JT Spangler: Dude. She's fantastic. By the way... ah Her name really is. Dame Vanessa Redgrave, because she's been knighted.
Jeff: Nice.
JT Spangler: She... has been working for eight decades. She's got an Academy Award, two Primetime Emmys, a Laurence Olivier Award, a Tony Award, Cannes Film Festival Best Actress.
Jeff: Dang.
JT Spangler: Thanks. She's got the BAFTA. ah She's in the American Theater Hall of Fame. She... is uh And.
Jeff: to
JT Spangler: Okay.
Jeff: And she did.
JT Spangler: Because she's almost 70 when this movie comes out, it's not like we're going to cover a lot of her stuff. but ah
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: she's She is not to be fucked with.
Jeff: Yeah, she she's she was awesome, dude. i just ah The whole time she was on the screen. I liked how... um She was older. Tom Cruise was like, still you know, still 33.
Jeff: I don't know how old she is now or how old she was in the movie, but I liked that. that um
JT Spangler: She was 69 in the movie.
Jeff: Dude, that's awesome. So I liked how how that worked out.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: I just. I need a frigging. super British 69 -year -old arms dealer in more of my movies.
JT Spangler: Yeah dude.
Jeff: ah by the By the way, she dated Timothy Dalton, so she was dating James Bond for a little while.
JT Spangler: nice dude not only that but let's listen to some more vanessa redgrave freaking lore she
Jeff: Pretty badass.
JT Spangler: Was born to actors and her father had been I don't know if he actually had was had land or had been knighted, but his name's Sir Michael Redgrave. And he... was performing in Hamlet.
JT Spangler: Uh, in London with Laurence Olivier. And the night that she was born, Laurence Olivier said on stage, Uh, that laertes who was who her father was playing had a daughter
Jeff: Right. Nice.
JT Spangler: So her birth got announced on stage by Laurence Olivier during... a performance of Hamill.
Jeff: That's pretty cool. That's pretty cool.
JT Spangler: Just... Ludicrous.
Jeff: Ah, man. That's awesome.
JT Spangler: Also, ah If you look at pictures of her from back in the day. She's kind of hot.
Jeff: Oh, man. Bye.
JT Spangler: It's old enough to be black and white. Be like, what's up? Vanessa Rae.
Jeff: It's... uh well i pulled up her wikipedia just now and it's a picture of her from 2019 and she's uh She's 84, but you know. She's cute.
JT Spangler: Yeah. Just keeping it tight. probably doing pilates and shit no she uh heart attack emphysema and is probably hanging on by a thread but
Jeff: oh
JT Spangler: She's gonna be run.
Jeff: Ah, man. That's no good. I don't like how that one ended.
JT Spangler: that's
Jeff: did
JT Spangler: That one made me sad. No, she's fantastic. And I love that Max, the arms dealer in this movie. as a woman. That's a great. Flip it around. And she was a badass.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Writer, director, the writers, ah David. A cup. And. um Robert Towne.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: And I was thinking, I was like, before I clicked on there, like buyers, I was like, probably one of these guys, like. Maybe it was one of the original. tv writers and then the other guy did the work and i was like oh no both of these dudes have done a million things like
Jeff: Yeah, they've they've done a ton.
JT Spangler: Like David Cup. wrote the screenplay for Jurassic Park. Even if he ever never did anything else.
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: That'd be pretty good.
Jeff: Yes, fantastic.
JT Spangler: Um,
Jeff: Um. Dude, the...
JT Spangler: But he also wrote this freaking screenplay for the Sam Raimi Spider -Man. Like he's done all kind of. Badass stuff.
Jeff: And he's not old. I just pulled him up. He's only 63.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: What am I doing with my life?
JT Spangler: Uh, we were doing this podcast.
Jeff: Yeah, I'm talking about him.
JT Spangler: hooray
Jeff: Oh man. yeah he uh oh look he did crystal skull
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: That's freaking great. You were wondering why somebody got into a ah nice chest. I mean, a um refrigerator for the nuke.
JT Spangler: Yeah, he also did
Jeff: was it Was it that Crystal Skull?
JT Spangler: Yes, it was. He also did Dial of Destiny, which was much better.
Jeff: Oh.
JT Spangler: And he did like... He did like four Jurassic Park movies.
Jeff: Nice.
JT Spangler: Um, He's done a bunch of stuff for Spielberg. Stir of Echoes, which I know you like, which is a weird -ass movie.
Jeff: Oh snap. Ooh, I do like that one.
JT Spangler: And then the other writer, Robert Towne. Um, Wrote. Chinatown for Roman Polanski in 1974, which is... considered one of the best screenplays And.
Jeff: Uncle Jack.
JT Spangler: e
Jeff: Yeah, dude, noir movies are my jam and Chinatown's fantastic.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Um,
JT Spangler: And he worked with Tom Cruise on Days of Thunder and The Firm, and he wrote this Mission Impossible and then the second one in 2000.
Jeff: He did.
Jeff: You got to say Days of Thunder won now since the second one's coming out.
JT Spangler: Thanks, Thunder. you The original.
Jeff: The original.
JT Spangler: Because he's 89, I'm assuming he's not writing the screenplay for the new Days of Thunder.
Jeff: You never know.
JT Spangler: Days of Thunder, electric wheelchair.
Jeff: You never know.
Jeff: Amen. Well, he takes care of himself because in his Wikipedia picture, he's smoking a cigar. Amen.
JT Spangler: Um, i Dude, i don't I don't smoke. I've never smoked. If I make it to 90, I might start.
Jeff: I told my students that the other day, I was like, if I make it to 90 and I can still wipe myself, just know Mr. Horn's doing heroin. And they're like, geez.
JT Spangler: Yeah. yes's Let's get after it.
Jeff: Chasing the white dragon.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Doing it.
JT Spangler: Try. Drive fast. Leave a sexy corpse.
Jeff: I'm here for a good time, not for a long time. Amen. Um, yeah those writers knocked it out of the park I do like how they did that ah Did we talk about, do we, we haven't done any other Brian De Palma movies. That that guy.
JT Spangler: No, we haven't
Jeff: he's done a lot of stuff dude but a lot of the stuff that he's done is uh stuff that i like that you don't really like as much like carrie and stuff like that like horror movies um
JT Spangler: Yeah. Yeah.
Jeff: I. Dude. And Scarface, I like. that's Most of the references in early Nas and Jay -Z songs are all...
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Scarface references. um
JT Spangler: Absolutely.
Jeff: I freaking like that guy. he's He's done a ton of good stuff. I mean, not towards the end where he starts to do like a domino. and Even though it doesn't that have your girl in it.
JT Spangler: Yeah. Okay. Some kind of weird stuff. Um,
Jeff: Um,
JT Spangler: Oh.
Jeff: No, what's that? what I'm trying to... um I was thinking of...
JT Spangler: Keira Knightley?
Jeff: Yeah, what's that name? Isn't that movie called Domino?
JT Spangler: Yeah. 2005.
Jeff: Ugh.
JT Spangler: that's ah tony That's Tony Scott, though. That's not Brian De Palma.
Jeff: Oh yeah. yeah because i just pulled up this domino and i don't recognize anybody on the screen
JT Spangler: I was going to say, is do you think my girl's Monique? She's in Domino.
Jeff: yeah
Jeff: Ooh, this domino has Guy Pearson in it. I like that guy. um Yeah, dude, he's won that guy's won a ton of an Academy Awards. He's got nine total. No, one win, nine. um nominations like one golden globe with 12 nominations he's been doing this thing for a while and he's pretty good at it
JT Spangler: Yeah. Yeah. the ah Yeah, dude, for sure. Sorry, I was looking at bonus stuff and I... was looking at the music and Danny Elfman was not the original composer for this.
JT Spangler: Movie. Alan Silvestri. was hired and tom cruise fired him during post -production and replaced him with danny elfman
Jeff: That's crazy.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: I wonder why.
JT Spangler: I don't know I don't know. Tom Cruise is ah doing Tom Cruise shit. He's like out in the vestry. ah You've won. You've won two Grammys, but I don't like this, so you're fired.
Jeff: Yeah. You're missing a damn quarter note every time.
JT Spangler: I am a camera. A camera am I.
Jeff: Oh man. Um.
Jeff: i Dude, I... I got to be honest, I like the the way that the the soundtrack, the theme. Sounds. I feel like I remember you two doing something with the soundtrack.
JT Spangler: You two did? um
Jeff: I had this soundtrack on CD.
JT Spangler: Yeah, I think they actually played the... ah the the soundtrack, the theme for this.
Jeff: oh they were doing the thing.
JT Spangler: movie
Jeff: i Because, dude, I... um If you put on this. Theme While you're driving through traffic? Man, you don't wait in any lights. You're just...
Jeff: I'm bobbing and weaving.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: I'm going up on curbs. I'm just i'm getting there. And I like that. And that's why I had to put it in there. I like that's my bonus thing is the theme.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: It's good.
JT Spangler: Dude, I mean, it's iconic. Uh,
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Yeah, what else do we got? Any more good?
Jeff: I got no more good.
JT Spangler: Let's do some worst. uh worst worst effects
Jeff: Um, I mean, dude, it's 1996 effects like. like now i can see how stuff was done and like now that i know more about movies it's different I watched the movie on my TV in the living room.
Jeff: in 4K. Um, Like I. I can almost see where the blue screen was for the train and the... And the thing...
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: um like i could almost tell like that's how they did it uh Again. it's less for bad effects and more like oh now i can see how they did it because it's so clear
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Um, so i don't do that I mean... I don't really have Any.
JT Spangler: I think the effects on this are really good. I mean, some of it you can kind of tell, and but there's movies that come out now, and I'm like, why can i why didn't they do a better job with that?
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: And the answer, spoiler alert, is always money. They didn't want to spend the money.
Jeff: It's money. So, dude, I just watched the Obi -Wan and Anne Hathaway get stuck on in with a dinosaur, whatever that's called, ah Oak Street.
JT Spangler: Yeah. Sure.
Jeff: And ah the dinosaurs, I was like. This doesn't even look as good as Jurassic Park did. In 1993, like what? Is that money? It's got to be, right?
Jeff: like
JT Spangler: Keep playing, buddy.
Jeff: I don't know. I kind of want to look up now how much Jurassic Park spent on that again and then look up how much they spent and then do the math and try to figure out if... with inflation if they spent less than Jurassic Park, because if they spent more, I would be very upset with what they got because it wasn't that good.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Um.
JT Spangler: Um, Other bonus good for this, the only other thing that I wanted to mention is that... This was notable for being one of the last major films to be released on Betamax.
Jeff: Mm. I never had Betamax.
JT Spangler: no me neither but i remember my uncle in the 80s and 90s being like betamax is way better you guys should all be doing betamax we're like no one's doing betamax i don't care
Jeff: so wait is betamax like just like iphone and android like betamax and VHS.
JT Spangler: Yeah, it was just a different. tape It was just a different size tape, but like you couldn't put it in a VHS. You'd have a... Betamax player.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: um
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: And supposedly the story was that Betamax got killed off because the porno companies were like, we're doing VHS. And everyone's like, well, that pretty much settles that.
Jeff: Well... It's done. Oh, that's great.
JT Spangler: Not going to have too much. Cheers.
Jeff: Oh.
JT Spangler: Um,
Jeff: why do we have this extra thing up here it's for other videos don't worry about it Not the naked tape!
JT Spangler: uh Not the naked tape. Not to make you feel bad.
Jeff: Pour some out for bigot.
JT Spangler: Yeah. Shout out. Dude, the other thing is that this movie opened Memorial Day weekend. which is like the cheat code to have a big weekend because you have an extra day.
Jeff: ah That helps.
JT Spangler: Like Sunday night isn't usually a night, but on Memorial Day it is.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: And this was like. So I remember like movies were like, oh, a movie's open on the weekend, but you could go Thursday at midnight because that's technically Friday. And then pretty it's like you go Thursday, like 7 p .m.
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: That's also the weekend. And then by this point.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Wednesday is the fucking weekend. So this movie has a huge open, but it starts playing Wednesday and then gets an extra night because of Memorial Day. And it's also the first film ever to be released at over 3 ,000 theaters.
Jeff: ah
JT Spangler: So like.
Jeff: Oh, nice.
JT Spangler: It's awesome, of course, but yes, it has the biggest opening weekend. It... barely beats Terminator 2, Judgment Day.
Jeff: Let's...
JT Spangler: Um,
Jeff: That's nuts.
JT Spangler: So.
Jeff: Even with the extra days?
JT Spangler: But yeah. i mean Yeah. it Yeah, it'd be funny.
Jeff: Feels like it should blow it out.
JT Spangler: It beat it by $100 ,000.
Jeff: Amen. That shows you how good Judgment Day is. T2's my jam.
JT Spangler: Yeah, dude. um And it's in it beat. So the... um The Wednesday before Memorial Day day record. It took the highest grossing day for that Wednesday and it beat out.
JT Spangler: Return of the Jedi.
Jeff: I was going to say George Lucas is that's when he releases all of his, because.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: He's trying to get that extra day.
JT Spangler: Get in.
Jeff: he's
JT Spangler: But... Um, Let's talk old tech, because there's... a Shit pile.
Jeff: Oh my God, there's so much. Uh,
JT Spangler: I like how this is like. We're going to make this special gum. And it's like. Here's your cell phone. You're going to need to work out before you can carry it around.
Jeff: Oh, man. It reminds me of Owen Wilson. He's like, look, I can't help but think that my stuff looks like it comes from Radio Shack in 1973. It's like spy phone, spy phone.
JT Spangler: A little bit. What do you know about the leafy bugs, Izzy? Dude. My favorite part is when Tom Cruise is typing on the laptop. He's like, I'll go on the internet. And there's not even any internet.
JT Spangler: Peace. He's trying to search on Usenet.
Jeff: Usenet.
JT Spangler: any It's like And he's like typing in. Job, J -O -B, and it's like, no results. It's like, dude, this is so... There's no one word you could type in into the internet in 2026 that you won't get a bunch of information about.
Jeff: It's so much information. Did you mean job?
JT Spangler: Thanks.
Jeff: Did you mean Job? Did you need three jobs?
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Did you need 314 jobs? Did you mean a job that opens at 314?
JT Spangler: Are you trying to apply for a job? Yeah. Do you want me to write your resume for you and send it off right now? I already did it.
Jeff: I already did. It cost us 16 bottles of water.
JT Spangler: Yeah, don't take a shower. I used all that water already.
Jeff: the
JT Spangler: You're like, I didn't even want to apply for a job. I was just trying to look up something.
Jeff: a Oh man, I was looking for a Betamax porn tape called Job 314.
JT Spangler: But yeah, he gets so annoyed with the internet that he gives up and grabs a Bible off the shelf and says, I'll just look this shit up here.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Bye. That was my favorite part of the whole attack.
Jeff: Amen. Um, Yeah, dude, I like how they have to rely on payphones and...
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: uh everybody's like he's like how far is this gonna work he's like uh Like, you got to be in the same room, dude. It's 1996.
JT Spangler: Yeah. And they had the Dick Tracy watches where they could see.
Jeff: Yeah, yeah.
JT Spangler: ah Like, I know that's not real because we just. barely got those glasses like last year.
Jeff: and Yeah.
JT Spangler: on
Jeff: And they're not even that good. They're not near as good as that. Um, Yeah, dude, I like the old tech alert. uh that we did that we have in this one because everything was just huge Everything, like the laptops could kill a person.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: the Everything.
JT Spangler: Yeah, dude
Jeff: It was great.
JT Spangler: Loved it. The f freaking floppy disk we already talked about and wasn't floppy at all.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: It's. It's the modern save icon that no one knows why it's that shape.
Jeff: Yeah, no my I asked my students after we talked about it last time and they were like, I don't know, is that a house? I was like, what?
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: A house? No. Um,
JT Spangler: Five questions. Is it okay for kids?
Jeff: uh yeah my uh well cc turned nine yesterday but she was eight when i was watching it and she walked through the room and she was like oh wait is this where he catches the sweat because i had already shown him that one scene from this movie to try to show him what mission impossible is about ah So she remembered that and I did. There's no like.
Jeff: There is blood. when they get stabbed.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Up against the... the portocolis or whatever the hell of that is that gate um There's blood there. But dude, the whole time I was like. that Because I try to think about that. i Dude, I don't think.
JT Spangler: A little bit of blood.
Jeff: I think it's fun. Yeah, I think it's fine.
JT Spangler: No sense. No nudity. Yeah.
Jeff: I did so remember when she was like sitting in a sleeping bag down on the floor and she like holds his hand and then she starts kissing it and then they just pan to something else I was like
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: They definitely did it.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: But... I don't think they did. now that i Once I figure out what happens after that.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: i remembered it all but they don't show any of that stuff so dude i'm saying like 10 is probably fine Is the 10 -year -old going to get the plot?
JT Spangler: No.
Jeff: No, the 18 -year -olds I teach aren't going to get the plot, so.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Uh, there. Those 18 year olds don't get the plot. of their own lives.
Jeff: no Not yet, but they will. it's gonna It's a lot of checking in with the manager and punching it.
JT Spangler: no they're No, they're all going to turn pro.
Jeff: Taking out track.
JT Spangler: Pro in what? Doesn't matter. Stacks on stacks on stacks.
Jeff: Aye. I put entrepreneur. What are you going to sell? What do you mean? I was like, what?
JT Spangler: Yeah. Heh heh.
Jeff: Amen. Uh...
JT Spangler: ah they're just getting Just get into crypto. It'll be fine. the Would this movie get made if it were pitched now?
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Yeah, they made one in 2023. They made one in 2025.
Jeff: Do that.
JT Spangler: I'm sure they'll do another.
Jeff: Obviously, they're definitely going to make it up.
JT Spangler: Till you're 90.
Jeff: They have to, right? Right.
JT Spangler: Yeah, I do.
Jeff: Right.
JT Spangler: I mean, this this one they did in 2025 would be a great bookend. to... the series. It's not going to be the last one. Why would it be?
Jeff: No.
JT Spangler: Tom Cruise is making movies.
Jeff: I think they bring Ving Rhames back, Shaun of the Dead. He's still alive, right? Wasn't he still alive?
JT Spangler: You think he's still alive?
Jeff: Yeah. um I think if you try to remake this as a movie, though, you don't do this specific version, right? Like what if there's another person? that oh we're going to have him he's going to be the new not james bond but the new ethan hunt and we're going to re redo all of these i don't think you do this movie the same way
JT Spangler: Well, the way to do it, if you wanted to go, I don't know why you'd reboot a series that's actively going on, but the way to do it.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: do A cartoon serial. TV version. or something that's, like, targeted towards kids. Like, you know, there was, like... Star Wars is like, we we can only do so many movies, but we can start cranking out kids shows.
Jeff: Yeah, a lot of kid shows. All my students like those, if that tells you anything.
JT Spangler: Nice.
Jeff: um
JT Spangler: But yeah, so I don't, this is kind of, some of the questions are kind of done.
Jeff: ah
JT Spangler: They're still making these. Who plays the lead?
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Tom Cruise. He's producing all these. They're not doing one without him. East. 64 hanging on a freaking airplane.
Jeff: All right, dude, there's did you see F1 with ah What's His Nuts?
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: All right, the the kid that's in that is Damson Idris.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: He's the ah the the tall black kid that was the driver. Um,
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: I don't know why I was thinking. about F1. After I watch this and let it marinate in my head to try to come up with remakes, I think that kid could do Tom Cruise's part. Not that we're redoing it again because they're still making them.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: ah But Damson Idris, I just, I don't know how you say his last name. um He's like the right age.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Um, I saw something from F1 and I. was like watching it and i was like oh dude that guy could play Because you know how we always like to switch it up from just... a whole cast full of white people.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: and that's why i think Dude, I think he's ages close. he's um physically, he's physically convincing.
JT Spangler: He's 35.
Jeff: um Dude, I think you could do it. I think you could do it.
JT Spangler: I like... ah I was surprised how much I liked F1. I watched it on an airplane. Because I was like, this is probably going to suck. I was like, I don't know anything about F1. I was like, dude, I like this movie.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: This is good.
Jeff: Yeah, it was. it was
JT Spangler: One guy's using the computer. Brad Pitt's got a tennis ball. It makes him just as good at driving a car. Why not?
Jeff: I ah watched that. I don't know where I watched it, but I had headphones on. I think I was watching the living room while everybody's sleeping. And dude, in the headphones, it was just. Stephanie. whizzing past your heads.
Jeff: Cool. I liked it.
JT Spangler: Yeah. can you still watch and enjoy this movie in 2026 you for sure can you can watch the other seven as well
Jeff: Uh, dude.
JT Spangler: Uh,
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: It's great fun.
Jeff: do you Do you start with this? Like if somebody's like, oh, I want to watch those. Do you tell them to start with this one?
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: I don't know, man. i kind of That one where they go to the Vatican and they have... ah freaking What's his name that died? Rainmaker!
JT Spangler: Yeah, Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Jeff: ah What's that guy's name? Hoffman.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: The the one with him in it.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Dude is unbelievable.
JT Spangler: Yeah, dude
Jeff: Like that one, I think that's number three. Or four maybe. i Dude, I don't know. That one is the one I would start with. Because I don't think you need all the other stuff.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
JT Spangler: Yeah, I mean, this one this one kind of gets it.
Jeff: I.
JT Spangler: gets it like explains it really well and I think is really fun but yeah you probably could start with Mission Impossible 3 that's Philip Seymour Hoffman Simon Pegg's in that one Ving Rhams obviously is in that one Michelle Moynihan a lot of the people like carry on through
Jeff: Right.
Jeff: carrie russell's in the very beginning remember she has that bomb in her head and it just
JT Spangler: are in that
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Makes our eyes go. crazy.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: Is that the one where he's ah pretending he's going to marry Michelle? Moyan, and he' he tells her she he works for the DOTD. and he's like you know a 10 second tap on your brakes causes one mile of traffic behind you And I think about that all the time because I have to drive on I -12, which is the worst stretch of highway on the entire face of the planet.
Jeff: Um, And I get all the way up there and I'm like, somebody better be dead because I'm 20 minutes late.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: It turns out and it was just somebody wanted to get in front of there. other person because that's their favorite exit.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: And now we're all stopped.
JT Spangler: ah Mythbusters did a thing about that. that I saw clip a clip of it on YouTube.
Jeff: Is it?
JT Spangler: and the
Jeff: Is that a thing?
JT Spangler: i think no I think that is more or less exactly what happens.
Jeff: Oh.
JT Spangler: um One person has their breaks.
Jeff: Boo!
JT Spangler: And then ah we all get the flu or whatever.
Jeff: true How you doing?
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: How you doing? How you doing?
JT Spangler: Um, Yeah, man, this thing's available.
Jeff: yeah
JT Spangler: It's on streaming. It's for rent. um We got... Up next, a movie that I'm not sure if I should be excited about or scared about. but it's prime.
Jeff: Oh, no.
JT Spangler: Primal Fear.
Jeff: Ooh. I can't wait. it's been so i I think I've only seen this once.
JT Spangler: I think I have maybe seen it one half of one time.
Jeff: it
JT Spangler: but i know that I know that Edward Norton is supposed to be awesome. So I'm like, all right, let's do this. I think it's i think that's it.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: daytime movie for me. I think it's not a nighttime movie.
Jeff: Turn all the lights on. Oh man, that's great.
JT Spangler: Yeah.
Jeff: I can't wait.
JT Spangler: All right, man. Well... ah Thanks for listening.
Jeff: It's.
JT Spangler: We'll see you in two weeks with.
Jeff: Yeah.
JT Spangler: ah Primal Fear.
Jeff: We have the meats. Vaya con Dios.
