Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello everyone and welcome back to another episode of the Daily Manchester United podcast. My name is Niall Hannigan, your host for this episode and I'm joined by Ciarán McGinley. Ciarán, how are you?
00:00:24
Kieran McGinley
I'm very well, Niall. How are you?
00:00:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, not so bad. i' Just checking up on the FIFA ratings there after our our episode yesterday. don't know if you saw the social media guys with the the FIFA card they made for you, but it was pretty impressive. A nice little 99 silver.
00:00:40
Kieran McGinley
ah night you know i'll take it. I take it. I've peaked. Now let's see the trough.
00:00:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah. It's, uh, it's inevitable. All thing that goes up must come down. And, uh, it was, i think after the the point I made that if Kieran was in the game, he'd have a higher rating than buying deer. So I think that's where that stemmed from, but we're done with the FIFA episode. I'm sure we'll, we'll go back to it when they inevitably update the game throughout the season, but we've got Brentford at the weekend. Um,
00:01:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Big, big game, hoping to kind of carry on with the momentum of the big win over Chelsea at the weekend. And we thought we'd have a look back at the results and some of the fixtures and how we've got on in the previous games against Brentford in the Premier League.
00:01:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Over the past four seasons, and we've we've played each other eight times since 2022, we've come away with five victories, one draw and two losses. I think the one that stuck in my head when Ciarán mentioned it before the episode was the 4-0 loss 2022, 13th of August.
00:01:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
That was a tough one to take. Ciarán and Ironman, Brian Emblemo, was on the score sheet. Thank
00:01:45
Kieran McGinley
He was, he was, yeah. 13th of August 2022. It was the third time we faced Brentford since their yeah know promotion into the Premier League in the modern era.
00:01:58
Kieran McGinley
Yeah, 4-0.
00:01:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
you.
00:02:00
Kieran McGinley
Yikes. And that was um that was and know August. So we're talking, one of the i think, one of the first games of the season.
00:02:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:02:07
Kieran McGinley
And after that result... we were 20th. Of course we were, because we'd lost and lost by four. So yeah, that makes that makes sense. But yeah, Josh De Silva, Matthias Jensen, Ben Mee, and there he is, Brian Umbermo, all scoring done within 35 minutes.
00:02:23
Kieran McGinley
And that just left shell-shocked. It was like, what what what we where do we go from here? It was a great way to start the season, obviously.
00:02:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it was a rough one. night I think it was one of Ten Hag's first games um and it didn't didn't bode well for for the future of that. Interesting looking at the Brentford team.
00:02:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Obviously, Ben Mee, like you mentioned. David Raya in nets. I have to remember where he came from as well. Christian Norgard midfield also now joined um Arsenal.
00:02:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
alongside Raya um and big Ivan Tony up front causing us all sorts of bother and he had a good career for himself and he's away making his money now so I mean he's got his goal for England got his penalty for England pretty impressive career I was um there was a couple of seasons there where he could have stayed in the Premier League to go on to a bigger team and you know United were kind of crying out for a striker as well would you liked to have seen him at United a kind of a a proven Premier League striker I suppose is what you could say I know he was linked with Arsenal quite a while but would you been happy if he donned the United jersey
00:03:34
Kieran McGinley
I'd have been happy if ah if any striker sort of took on the challenge at that point. It was he was getting a bit desperate. But yeah, it would have been interesting.
00:03:45
Kieran McGinley
Quite an interesting experiment. You know, an English centre-forward playing for Man United. It would have would have made a lot of sense. Yeah. yeah I don't know. I think in the end, i think he was a decent Premier League st striker.
00:03:59
Kieran McGinley
I just think if he'd have if he'd have gone to one of the top clubs like Arsenal or Tottenham or to Chelsea, would he have you know made it at the top?
00:04:10
Kieran McGinley
Would he would he become that 20-goal-a-season striker?
00:04:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:04:15
Kieran McGinley
And you say, yes, there's better service, but also there's higher expectation. you know You've got the weight of expectation on you as well. And Yeah, I mean, Brentford cashed in, obviously, um with his move to um Ali.
00:04:29
Kieran McGinley
And mean, yeah, he's as you say, his England goal, has made England appearances. I think, to be honest with you, Ivan Toney... is in that realm of he's sort of achieved what he wants to achieve.
00:04:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep. yep
00:04:44
Kieran McGinley
And I think sometimes you just have to say that's fair enough. You know, he he became a proven Premier League striker, won the hearts of the Brentford team and fans and helped them become a mainstay in the Premier League now.
00:04:57
Kieran McGinley
regardless of of what happens further down the line. Whilst he was there, Brentford were never really in danger of going down. And so sometimes as footballers, you just think, I made it to the Premier League.
00:05:08
Kieran McGinley
this There's nothing more I want to prove. He's played for England. He's scored for England. There are very few people that could attest to that in world football.
00:05:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Exactly. Not a bad career. Not a bad career at all. um I suppose looking at the other fixtures that we've had with them over the last last few years, bounced back quite well after that foreign defeat um away from home. Went on won 1-0.
00:05:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Marcus Rashford with the goal. I mean, like can't go too many episodes without bringing him up after his two incredible goals for Barcelona there. But I heard that he didn't show up for training on time, so he's been dropped again.
00:05:43
Kieran McGinley
What? what
00:05:47
Kieran McGinley
Yeah, those those are reports, aren't they? I mean, yeah, we we look back at these and we just keep hurting ourselves, but it's fine. It's fine.
00:05:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah yeah interesting with the one last season as well 2-1 victory any guesses of who scored them two currently not at the club yeah
00:05:54
Kieran McGinley
We'll be okay. Yeah.
00:06:04
Kieran McGinley
currently not at the club. McSauce. There go. like source
00:06:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
McSauce, no, I think he was he was well gone. We're Garnaccio and Hyland with these two goals.
00:06:14
Kieran McGinley
Oh, sure.
00:06:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
So Hyland's gone to join McSauce, probably get a Ballon d'Or nomination as well next season playing for Napoli. Seems to be the kind of rite of passage when you go over there and end up scoring 20-25 goals.
00:06:21
Kieran McGinley
Yep.
00:06:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
So looking forward to seeing him blossom into um a Ballon d'Or candidate. Johnny Evans, what ah what an era that was of Johnny Evans playing playing last season and two seasons ago. I mean, came in as one of those chill roles, kind of looking after some maybe some of the academy games and some of the academy teams, and then ends up playing a pivot role in a back four and a back three for us. Like, I mean, what a stalwart of the club, really.
00:06:56
Kieran McGinley
more importantly, he came back. He sort of answered the phone, you know, the SOS.
00:07:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Really?
00:07:02
Kieran McGinley
Yeah. Sorry, you want me back? No, come on now. But no, he he did put in a really solid effort for what can be made for ah for a veteran, you know.
00:07:14
Kieran McGinley
And now I believe he's the the loan manager as well Manchester United now. So he you know got rewarded with the you know with the staff role at Manchester United and now helping those that are yeah developmental loans and helping secure loans, whether it's short term, six months or or for the full season. and So, yeah, he's he's landed that there.
00:07:35
Kieran McGinley
But yeah, I have to agree. for For what he was and for the role he was expected to have, at the role he was told he was going to have, are you'll just be a squad player. If there's an injury, you're in.
00:07:47
Kieran McGinley
Well, the injuries happened immediately and and the form dip happened immediately before it became a case of, yeah, Johnny, can you stay the rest of the season? That'd be great.
00:07:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, Johnny, can you pack your boots just for the away trip? Because I know everyone's back fit, but you're actually our best centre back. So if you could just keep them on and bring your shin pads, that'd be great. But ah yeah, I mean, glad to have them back in the club.
00:08:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was always a bit of a debate. You know, hindsight's a wonderful thing, but... should Should he have stayed at the club and should United have kept a hold of him and and had him as as one of those centre-backs? You can always kind of say that, but he was very good at Leicester. There was a time where Man City were looking for him as well before he he moved on from there again. A good footballer, but then everyone says that about Danny Welbeck as well. you know Danny Welbeck should stayed. He's the best, better better better striker, or better than any striker United have.
00:08:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
But then at the time, you're like, oh, Danny Welbeck's our fourth or fifth striker. We can get rid of him. So there's always those sort of things.
00:08:44
Kieran McGinley
Yeah.
00:08:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
We go through cycles of it.
00:08:46
Kieran McGinley
But Danny did break my heart when, you know, played for Arsenal and when then celebrated against United. It was like, why? Why would you do that?
00:08:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:08:54
Kieran McGinley
But I understand, you know, um it does sometimes it has to be done, especially when you're binned off.
00:08:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Has to be done. Has to be done.
00:09:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, absolutely.
00:09:01
Kieran McGinley
It kind of has to be done. Yeah.
00:09:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely. I'm on the player side on that one. But yeah, sounds good. Anyway, we'll take a quick break here and we'll be back with a bit more about the history of us and Brentford.
00:10:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
We mentioned Brian Mbomo with the connection with Brentford scoring against United and also you know winning our goal the month for August with great competition.
00:10:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
But another another player that um has played for both teams and has a great story is Christian Eriksen. I mean, Brentford was the... the team that give him give him the chance to come back and play in the premier league um and he did so well united were like yeah well we'll have a bit of that a player that's past his prime sounds like sounds like a bit of our strategy there but now and jokes aside ericsson's a bit of a legend and uh i was delighted to have a great footballer but yeah um interesting career for christian and he did quite well for us when he came back to be fair
00:11:02
Kieran McGinley
Yeah, and obviously he was going through a time where you know pretty much he his career at Italy was over with the with the pacemaker that he had to have. It was banned in Italy.
00:11:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:11:13
Kieran McGinley
you know You weren't allowed to play sports if you had the pacemaker. So his his time in Italy was done. So the contract was terminated. And as you as you said, Brentford gave him the chance to play in the Premier League again. And he did well.
00:11:26
Kieran McGinley
He did all right. know Played for United again. Yeah, it did okay. I'm not going to say he was an absolute world beater, but as a squad player, as a playmaker, he had some great moments United shirt as well.
00:11:40
Kieran McGinley
And it just kind of made you think, yeah, this this we could have had him maybe 10 years ago. you know We could have tried to poach him from Tottenham and we you know what a player he would have been.
00:11:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:11:49
Kieran McGinley
But hey, but if football is just hindsight-assisted. you know, turned up to 10, you know, it's 2020 or is it 200, 200 vision? You know, it's, it's one of those, it's one of those lovely things that he'll always miss.
00:12:06
Kieran McGinley
And maybe we missed Ericsson in his prime. Well, we did miss Ericsson in his prime, but the player we had, you know, is better than the player that was and of kind of um ah replicating in the Euros.
00:12:19
Kieran McGinley
You know, we almost lost a ah great player that day and it was really great.
00:12:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:12:24
Kieran McGinley
He played like, you know, he'd be given a second chance in in football. And it was great to be great to be a part of that journey to get him back to back to the player we know he can be.
00:12:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely. Always had a soft spot for him. And there was a time last season where he was playing a lot of the games at the start of the season and he was getting nearly a goal or an assist a game. Like it was incredible, but we knew it wasn't going to last. But yeah, always had, always had great footballing ability. Probably couldn't last the 90 minutes in his last season, and but was putting in kind of great efforts across the the Europa League matches as well and different cup ties that we had. So um yeah, definitely a player that was, that that did well for us.
00:13:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just looking back at the last game that we played against Brentford, 4th of May, just just a few months ago, 4-3 Brentford from home.
00:13:09
Kieran McGinley
Uh-oh.
00:13:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
um away from home i mean It's not the type of form you want to be running into now over the the weekend. and That was with the Amadello goal in the 95th minute to kind of look after the scoreboard a bit. but and All in all, Kieran, five wins, two losses and a draw, it's not too bad, but we'd we'd we'd expect to be doing better against Brentford, but We'll have the preview over the next day or so of the Brentford game. But are you positive going into this? Give me some give me some thoughts. We're just at for win against Chelsea. Surely we're positive.
00:13:57
Kieran McGinley
I mean, we played well against Chelsea when they were down to 10. soon As the soon as the, you know, players on each side were leveled up, we started to struggle again.
00:14:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Shit. Shit.
00:14:07
Kieran McGinley
So what we need to do is get the keeper sent off. That's the tactic, you know.
00:14:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:14:12
Kieran McGinley
Mark Flecken, we're looking at it you. Keevan Kelleher, whoever starts. We're looking at you. ah Get that, get Sesko, head the ball, Brian Umbermo's onto it, draw the foul outside the box.
00:14:27
Kieran McGinley
Importantly, it has to be outside the box because if it's inside the box, it's that whole double jeopardy.
00:14:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah yeah and we'd rather keeper sent off than a goal yeah
00:14:32
Kieran McGinley
Outside the box, last man, That's it. That would be a win in my book. um And if that's the way we're going to play, so be it.
00:14:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
but yeah
00:14:40
Kieran McGinley
I love the tactic. But it it surely can't be as crazy as the last match. I mean, Mount scoring in the last game we played, as you said, towards the end of last season, it was a case of it was May.
00:14:52
Kieran McGinley
It had been decided that we'd got nothing left to play for. We had the full focus on the Europa League final.
00:14:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay.
00:14:58
Kieran McGinley
No, we're not going to discuss how that went. But the point was... We open the scoring, Mason Mount, and then Luke Shaw credited with an own goal. Then Kevin Sharder scored on the 33rd.
00:15:11
Kieran McGinley
Then Kevin Sharder scored in the 70th. Johan Wisser made it four in the 74th. 4-1, and you're thinking, what what's going on? It's Garnaccio and Ahmad coming back with two late goals in the game to make the scoreline at least ah look a little bit respectable.
00:15:28
Kieran McGinley
But yeah, i it it cannot be that crazy. i mean, we started Chido Obi in that game because it was a case of, well, we might as well. Harry Amas started, Tyler Fredrickson started because we just thought, well, why not?
00:15:41
Kieran McGinley
Why not start them now? We've got nothing left have to play for.
00:15:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Crazy, crazy looking back at that team. I mean, yeah, it's funny as well. Looking at this website that we have, 11 11, they do like um comments on there where they were before the game and some some stats. There's a lovely little stat here. United have now lost 16 league games in a season for the first time since nineteen eighty nine ninety season and League League Division um another lovely stat now failed to win six consecutive games in the Premier League since 2015 which is fantastic um and they've now lost 14 of the 22 games in London so I mean that was last season though that is that's so last season like we are so much better this season so I think that's the the attitude that we need to quit with for this game at the weekend but yeah
00:16:24
Kieran McGinley
Yeah.
00:16:32
Kieran McGinley
Yeah. Well, the one last thing to say as well is is the preview of that same website, 11v11.com, is, quote, with three games still to play, Brentford would now finish above Manchester United's league position at the end of the season for the first time since 1937-38.
00:16:51
Kieran McGinley
wow Now, considering you know in in all competitions, we face Brentford 21 times,
00:16:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:16:59
Kieran McGinley
take Make of that what you will. mean, before you know we'd faced them in the Premier League, we had a League Cup game in 1975. Before that, it was a Division I game in 1947. So it's fair to say we haven't had many matches against Brentford, but looking at you know the previous record in all competitions, 11 wins against Brentford, seven losses and three draws.
00:17:21
Kieran McGinley
If anything, it's probably going to be a great game of football for the neutral.
00:17:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, for the neutral, exactly.
00:17:25
Kieran McGinley
Yeah.
00:17:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
exactly But anyway, we'll have plenty of preview um in the next episode before the game, how do we think it will line up, some of the danger players for Brentford, how we think it'll finish. Me and Kieran were horrifically wrong with our predictions last week, which... um
00:17:41
Kieran McGinley
I'm glad. I'm glad we were horrifically long.
00:17:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm glad. I'm glad. So, yeah, we're going to also be predicting two losses this weekend, I'm sure, in the preview. But, yeah, we won't give any spoilers yet. But, Ciarán, thank you for joining me on this episode. And if you're interested in checking us out on the socials to see...
00:17:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Cairns, FIFA, FC, whatever the kids are calling it these days, FC 26 card. Silver, but 99 rated overall. So take with that what you will. I don't know, a potential 100. So it's it's a really, really good card, guys.
00:18:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
and But yeah, if you're interested, GSBM Man United across all socials. And yeah, thank you very much for listening and we'll see you in the next one.
