Match Preview: Manchester United vs. Sunderland

00:00:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello everyone, welcome back to the Daily Manchester United. It's game day, whether you like it or not, we are going into this one with bated breath, really, aren't we?
00:00:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
We are at home against Sunderland in a match where we haven't faced Sunderland since, I believe, the 2016-17 season. Someone can and will correct me if I'm wrong.
00:00:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
In a match and a squad that contained on the Sunderland side, Jermaine Defoe, luckily we don't have to worry about him anymore.

Current Standings and Team Form

00:00:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
What we do have to worry about is the entire side of Sunderland, who have managed to, in this part of the game, manage to pick up 11 points from their six games so far this season and currently sit in sixth place.
00:00:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
United, on the other hand, have seven points from the first six games of the season and currently lie in fourteenth place. What does that mean? Well, you'd think it would be a must win, wouldn't you? You'd think it'll have to be a win to get us into double digits for the season.
00:01:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it's not really going to be that easy, is it? Let's jump into this and try and decide once and for all how it's all going to play out.

Key Players to Watch

00:01:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sunderland then, well, Isidore is going to be one to watch. I mean, in fairness, yes, he is.
00:01:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, he's got the... potential to change the game. I think Rufs as well in goal. He's been phenomenal, hasn't he? Ruben Rufs? He's been great. A 22-year-old from the Netherlands has... Yeah, he's been ah he's been phenomenal.
00:01:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
He really has. How many times can I say that? He has his own chant. He's a goalkeeper and he has his own chant at Sunderland. That tells you everything you need to know. he is not necessarily a game changer, but he is going to change the game in Sunderland's favour.
00:01:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
And of course, there is Chris Rigg, who... out of fun of the podcast. Niall and I might have called him Will Rigg. It's not Will Rigg, but it's Chris Rigg. and He might be on fire coming into this one.
00:02:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's hope not. i mean, the 18-year-old has a very, very promising career up ahead of him. He's already made 77 appearances for the Sunderland senior team. Seven goals in his career so far.
00:02:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, he's great. Xhaka as well in that midfield. Yeah, he's a very experienced Premier League player. They've also got Le Fay as well. Enzo Le Fay, who I believe transferred this summer, six appearances so far, the one goal for him in this season, which now I've identified that, you know what happens now.
00:02:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just like i predicted with Thiago, he might get a brace or more. Who knows? Well, Thiago, when he, uh, He came up against Manchester United, briefly put himself right at the top of the top goalscores. Let's hope that's not the case this time around with the squads that we're facing up against.
00:03:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Going to be an interesting one. Again, what does Amarim do? As we we discussed earlier, Alex from the the Noisy Neighbours podcast was on the episode yesterday. Great episode if you want to go back and listen to it and watch it on YouTube and on Spotify and Apple.

Guest Insights with Alex

00:03:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was a great episode. Strap yourselves in because we talk about a lot pretty much up till now in the season. And yeah, great to have Alex, the the better half of the ah the Noisy Neighbours podcast. of course, go and ahead and check out their stuff as well. They're great. They do some watch along, so make sure you go and watch along with them.
00:03:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, we'll be able to tune in afterwards of the match with us.

Injury Report and Team Form

00:03:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
If you're listening along, I raise my eyes to the heavens because I i genuinely don't know what could happen.
00:03:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
This could be a really squeaky win where we just about get by and get ourselves three points that maybe we don't deserve.
00:04:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Or we're going to get battered at home. I don't think there's an in-between. and you know i come into this with so little faith in the players and and and in them you know in how we're playing at the moment.
00:04:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's a far cry from our match against Arsenal at the start of the season, where there was this optimism. There was this sense of, yeah, we didn't play or we we played well, but we lost.
00:04:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it just felt like know that was a turning point. And it felt like, OK, against Arsenal, it was 1-0. They play very defensive football. They let us play. And we just about came away with a loss.
00:04:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
It wasn't too bad. you know Apart from a mistake or two that led to the goal, it wasn't the end of the world. But now we've had the five games in between.
00:04:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know the The best we played was when we were playing against 10 men of Chelsea. And then the game management just went out the window at that point when Casemiro, on a yellow card, slides in gives the ref an option to you know give a second yellow card.
00:05:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Don't give the ref that option. If you're on a yellow card, you're already 2-0 up. There's this certain thing called game management, which I would have hoped in Casemiro's long and successful career that he's figured that out, but apparently no. Apparently that needed a slide tackle.
00:05:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway, he is eligible, of course, to be selected for the next game against Sunderland. And, well, we have... Maserawi, who is apparently out with a knock.
00:05:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah So he's going to be potentially out until after the international window. And of course, the long-term injury of Lichard Martinez, which we do have to mention every single time.
00:05:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
That is the case. So there it is. On the Sunderland side, I'm just having a look here. They are a little bit ravaged with injuries and suspensions. Reynaldo, yeah, he was in my fantasy team, got himself sent off. i had a bad week.
00:06:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Really bad week in fantasy. I lost a lot of ground to Tom at the top. A lot. But he's out there. He's suspended with a red card. You've got Diara, Habib Diara, out with a ah an injury. You've got Romain Mundo on the Sunderland side. Cherkin, I think. denni says sorry Dennis Cherkin.
00:06:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah You've got Leo Hjelda. out with an Achilles tendon injury. Ajay, Elise and Ian Pavada all out with injuries.
00:06:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
But again, it's still going to be a pretty strong side. I don't underestimate this Sunderland side. And if you do, underestimate them at your peril.
00:06:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
There is a reason they have 11 points and averaging just shy of two points a game. And if you've heard of that phrase before, yes, we are harking back to the FIFAs of, say, 10 years ago, where the line was, if you average two points a game, you'll be on for a strong result.
00:07:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Sunderland are just shy of that. United aren't anywhere near it at the moment. So we're we're closer to one point a game, just over, which again is relegation form. So not ideal. We really need a win here.

Potential Team Selections

00:07:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we've got to pick a team. Again, it's one of those head versus heart moments of a team selection. Well, that's what's to come. When we come back, it's a predicted 11, a head versus heart.
00:07:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, you know how this is going to go. Join us after this.
00:08:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Head versus heart. Me versus Amarim. are we going to line up the sides? I'm going to try and play both sides here. Who I would pick and probably who is going to be picked. So let's get into this.
00:08:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Again, we're going to be bashing heads with the goalkeeper. Send them on. If going to start him, you've to start him now. Because although Altai, in the City game, couldn't really do a lot, the Brentford game felt like you know the the second goal, he just palms it into the path of Thiago from across that he should be dealing with.
00:09:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
So this is this is the chance now. A chance to prove me wrong at saying that Amirim is falling into the trap of playing favourites. It's what happened to Ten Hag.
00:09:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's one of the reasons why he had the downfall that he did. You can't have favourites when you are in relegation form. There has to be a change and it has to be Sen Le Mans starting in goal.
00:09:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's for me. I think Amrub is going prove me right and start Al-Time. That's just it. He just considers him the first choice. And if he considers him the first choice, Lord only knows what Sen Le Mans is like.
00:09:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
anyway Back three then. ah Who would I like in the side? I would probably, with Maserawi out, I think it's probably going to be what would i actually know what would I like?
00:10:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
I would like Yoro. I would like Delict. And it's it's a flip of a coin, really, between Maguire and Shaw. I think I'd prefer Maguire.
00:10:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
And how do I think it's going to line up? I think it's going be Delict, Shaw, Maguire. There's this... I don't know what it is. Sure, left centre-back seems to be a favourable option for Amrum. And he's he's had, I think, a good time for one or two games. But other than that, he does lack in pace in a system that's playing a high line.
00:10:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
He lacks in pace, which was you know a theme that was raised on yesterday's special episode. it's It's a back line that lacks pace without Jorreau in the side. So...
00:10:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
That makes all the more sense to start Shaw, Maguire and Delict for Amorim. So I think that's what he's going to go for. What I would like to go for, Jor-O, Maguire, Delict.
00:11:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Maguire would would probably start. ah Midfield then.

Player Roles and Lineup Debates

00:11:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ahmad back from his um absence due to personal reasons. Do I think he gets in this side?
00:11:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
I would like him to start right wing back. I think... Him at attacking midfielder hasn't really worked at the start the season, but we know he can do it. I just think him at attacking midfielder, when you've got Cunha and Mbamo, again, I'm sort of slightly leaking my own thoughts ahead of time.
00:11:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
But with those two starting at attacking midfield, either he starts and it's at right wing back or he's on the bench and maybe comes on for Cunha, you know, sort of at the 60 minute mark.
00:11:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
i I would like to see Ahmad at right wing back, Dogu at left wing back. There's lot of, um what's the word? Grating. It's kind of, not adhesion, but you know what I mean?
00:12:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
A lot of talk about Dorgou. And especially in our comments, which is great. Let us know down below what you think. But I think there is a player in Dorgou and he's getting criticism.
00:12:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think it's fair criticism. Is he the best left back? No. But he's he's a left wing back. He's one of those that provides the width and has to provide the width. He's a great athlete. First touch is okay If we're going to have those long balls over towards Dorgou, he's got to get better at trapping the ball and making use of that down the left-hand side.
00:12:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he's a young guy as well. He's only 20 years old. I say give him time. I think there's a really good player in there that can develop. So I'm happy to keep the faith in Dorgou.
00:12:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
I want Ahmad to start at right wing back. How do I think it's going to line up at the wing backs? Dorgou on the left, Dallou on the right. It's just Amarim heritage. It really is. Holding midfields, I think Amarim and I are going to agree on this one, on this occasion. I think it's going Fernandes and Casemiro in that holding midfield.
00:13:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll see how Fernandes does, but I wouldn't be surprised if we had Agathe and Mainu on the bench and perhaps...
00:13:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Another substitution idea, if Ahmad doesn't start, which probably will be the case if Amarim has his say, is they'll probably take Cunha off, push Fernandes up into that attacking midfield and put Maynou in that sort of midfield position alongside Agate.
00:13:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Round about the hour mark. I reckon that could be a play. There's got to be a centre-back substitution as well. So I think Amarim will bring on Yoro for that one. and But sub him off for someone like De Ligt or yeah the best performing defender because the logic is outstanding.
00:14:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Anyway, i got slightly off track there. Holding midfield, I think we're agreeing on. Casemiro and Fernandes. And I think now the rest of the team... Amrub and I are going to agree on.
00:14:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Bermode and Cunha, those attacking midfield spots, makes the most sense. They've been two of our better players throughout this season. And then you've got Cesco up top looking to add to his one goal so far in the Premier League. Yay.
00:14:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that's the head versus heart predictions there. a little bit of, um you know, head to head, a little bit of rivalry between myself and Amrum. Let us know, though, down below in the comments, wherever you're listening or watching this one, who do you want in the starting 11? Perhaps there's someone in there that you think, no, not a chance.
00:14:45
Global Sports Podcast Network

Manchester United versus Sunderland. I'm going to go 2-2. I think it's going to be a hectic game. I think this is two sides that you know are itching to get some wins there. Sunderland have only lost one of their previous five, so they're not in you know they're in pretty good form.
00:15:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah The same can't be said for Manchester United, who have only won two of their last five, the other three being losses. So we're not in great form. I reckon it's going to be two two I reckon Sunderland are going to figure it out. that They can press and counter, and they'll do absolutely fine.
