Introduction and Hosts Welcome
00:00:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello everyone and welcome back to another episode of the Daily Manchester United podcast. I'm your host for the episode, Niall Hannigan, and I'm back with Ciarán McGinley. Ciarán, how are you?
00:00:24
Kieran McGinley
I'm good. I'm good, thank
International Call-ups Reflection
00:00:25
Kieran McGinley
you. Yeah, it's been um it's been an interesting couple of days, you know, watching on and, you know, I listened to your episode yesterday about who got called up for international duty.
00:00:35
Kieran McGinley
um Saw our very, very capable James Scanlon. Unfortunately, I'll be on the losing side of quite a, well, I wouldn't say a bizarre game, but it certainly was a game that turned up for the books. It was not one that really anybody expected.
Surprising Friendly Match Result
00:00:49
Kieran McGinley
i mean, it was a friendly, but hey, it was...
00:00:53
Kieran McGinley
It was quite fun against New Caledonia. It's about 5,000 miles between them. But hey, chance to get some...
00:00:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we had New Caledonia, Gibraltar.
00:01:00
Kieran McGinley
Yes. 2-0 to milton New Caledonia.
00:01:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
What was the score?
00:01:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Can't believe i missed that. Yeah.
00:01:06
Kieran McGinley
don't know. don't know.
00:01:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wasn't tuning into
World Cup Qualification Discussion
00:01:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
our James Scanlon. You were saying that our Brian and Bwem will come off the bench to get a goal as well this evening.
00:01:14
Kieran McGinley
Yes, he yeah he came on against Mauritius and got himself a goal. Ananda kept a clean sheet, so Cameroon now moved themselves ah within two points of Cape Verde.
00:01:25
Kieran McGinley
And as we already know here on the Daily Manchester United podcast, Cape Verde are so, so close now to securing qualification. One game to go, they've got a two-point gap Cameroon. Essentially, match Cameroon in their next game, and they should be going to the World Cup.
00:01:41
Kieran McGinley
So, amazing, amazing. Cape Verde's never been before.
Cape Verde's Popularity Surge
00:01:44
Kieran McGinley
And, you know, pretty sure, yeah, Ricardo Lopez, Shamrock Rovers player, Pico Lopez, you'll know him, Niall, I'm sure, is on the verge of World Cup glory.
00:01:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, no, it's incredible. I think Cape Verde has become like the international team of choice associated with this podcast. Like we'll we'll just during the World Cup turn into a Cape Verde podcast and we'll get daily episodes out because ah yeah, the love we're receiving for Cape Verde as well on socials is that surprising, but but positive. We'll take it. We'll take it.
00:02:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
We need all the comments we can get. So yeah, it's it's it's definitely our team of choice in international break.
00:02:22
Kieran McGinley
how Harsh but fair, but there we go.
00:02:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Exactly,
Support and Patience for Ruan Amarim
00:02:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
exactly. But anyway, hot off the press, Ciarán, we have an article from the Sky Sports news reporter Daniel Kahn published at 8.30 this evening, currently 9pm when we're recording this.
00:02:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Headline reads, Ruan Amarim has Man United squad support as Sir Jim Radcliffe takes patient approach with head coach. And I suppose... A couple of big things. First thing is the players are obviously supporting Amaran, which is always nice, or apparently at the minute always easy off a win at the weekend. But the big headline off of this is that Sir Jim Ratcliffe is willing to give the managerial appointment three years to prove himself as a great coach.
00:03:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, we can dive into this. Initial thoughts
United's Managerial Strategy
00:03:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
on that? Surprised? Unsurprised?
00:03:14
Kieran McGinley
No, not unsurprised. um I think, well, actually, yes, unsurprised. I i kind of expected United wanted him right now. In theory, Amarim would have only taken over in sort of the the summer window just gone. so
00:03:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:03:30
Kieran McGinley
you know, United made the ultimate men our ultimatum. It only makes sense that they, you know, give him a little bit more time to sort of judge him at from the start of this season. And it's been a rocky start, but there have been signs that things are starting to happen. But at the moment we get positive is the moment it
Goals: Premier League vs Champions League
00:03:46
Kieran McGinley
all falls apart. So stay negative.
00:03:48
Kieran McGinley
Don't expect, no I'm kidding. I think, you know, there's been a lot of sort of Quick reactions, um especially when it comes to to football management. you know you know you Do you go with the Chelsea scattergun approach where if you're not winning after sort of 15 games, you're out and we'll get in with somebody else. you know There's that money to just keep managers coming in until it works, until one sticks to the wall and you win trophies.
00:04:14
Kieran McGinley
um And it's not been a and a trophy laden run. You know, it's been, there's been a couple of trophies here and there to stop gaps and, you know, have that winning feeling. So we can't feel too aggrieved that there's not been any trophies.
00:04:29
Kieran McGinley
But it's the big one, the Premier League. You know, that's the one we've been missing for a while. And yeah, Champions League as well since 2008. But I think we need to focus on the Premier League before the Champions League, in in all honesty. That will be the one for me to win it. To to win it for the first time, you know, what would essentially now be 12 years. I can't see it's challenging this season. and
00:04:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah,
00:04:49
Kieran McGinley
would be Would be amazing, you know, if we if we could win it. before the end of the 2030s. I think that's a realistic target. um It will be a you plenty of ambition.
00:05:00
Kieran McGinley
but It would need backing from the board.
Skepticism on Managerial Support
00:05:02
Kieran McGinley
But what I don't... you know you You see headlines when the board come out and they say, we have full faith in the manager.
00:05:11
Kieran McGinley
And in the back of your head, that's the instant alarm of saying, he's got three games left.
00:05:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah.
00:05:16
Kieran McGinley
um And i I hope that's not the case, because I think there is something that's that's happening.
00:05:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:05:23
Kieran McGinley
There is potential here. It's just frustrating that we see glimpses of it every now and again. If it gets more consistency, then there's no reason why we can't be successful.
00:05:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, what else is he going to say? He's going to say, oh no, he we're only going to give him another six months. I mean, they're saying all the right things. He has to come out and say he's given him three years or he's giving him an extended period of time.
00:05:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, if someone says six months or we're giving him another year, immediately it's ah it's a ticking time bomb of, oh, have you changed
Amarim's Challenges and Improvements
00:05:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
your mind yet? If you put it three years ahead, it it gives you enough leeway that that question won't come up for for the next while anyway until until we drop points against someone below us in the league. But it kind of,
00:06:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
bats away that the news reporters for a while anyway and keeps keeps them quiet on it but it's an interesting one I mean with Amirim can I see signs of improvement glimpses I would say like very like as you mentioned and we've mentioned before spells within matches you know a couple of minutes where things seem to be clicking but Things were clicking with other managers as well. like you know we We finished higher in the table with other managers and with other players. So it's um it's not that he he's going to get everything right.
00:06:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I don't know if he is the right manager, but I really like him. And I think that's what's keeping me in Amorim at the minute. um I really like
Fan Appreciation of Amarim's Honesty
00:06:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Amorim.
00:06:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, kind of calling back to your crossover pod a couple of days ago.
00:06:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. He's really likable. He's honest, probably too honest and too raw in the media. But as ah as a fan watching in, I do like it because he speaks the truth. Like, I mean, some of the comments last year around this is the worst Man United team in the history. Like, you know, how can a manager say that about team that he's currently managing? But everyone was like, yeah, fair.
00:07:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sounds good.
00:07:20
Kieran McGinley
I think even some of the players are saying yeah that's fair that's a fair criticism
00:07:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
So... yeah yeah yeah no you've nailed it you've nailed it so i even some of his comments following the the the Grimsby matches and other matches you know saying sometimes I hate this job and sometimes I love it sometimes I hate the players sometimes I love them like just comments like that I really like um and yeah I don't know maybe it's just because the bar has dropped but we have a long way to go to start competing for titles so you have to kind of cling on to any bit of positivity that you can
00:07:50
Kieran McGinley
And going into sort of an international break with a 2-0 win
Promoted Teams' Strong Performance
00:07:53
Kieran McGinley
against Sunderland. Yes, it's Sunderland and they've only been promoted this season, but I sort of maintain that the promoted sides have been quite good this season.
00:08:00
Kieran McGinley
you know they've They've shown real promise. I like to think of it as it's the strongest showing from promoted sides I've seen maybe this decade, I would probably say.
00:08:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's true.
00:08:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Decade, I'm not sure, but definitely over the last few years because they've adapted. They haven't just tried to play the same way they played in the championship. they've They've gone more physical. They're not playing out from the back and getting caught because they're just not good enough. You know, they're being pragmatic. You know, Kompany obviously got his move to Bayern, but...
00:08:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
He absolutely killed Burnley in the Premier League trying to play out from the back with players that just weren't good enough. But his system, his ideology, his methodology, his whatever way you want to call it, got him the job somehow after getting relegated with Burnley.
00:08:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, I'm glad they have adapted because it is it is a lot more competitive.
00:08:49
Kieran McGinley
I did have to remind myself of the league table. Maybe I went a bit you know bit hyperbole. But it's the fact that Sunderland are ninth and you've got Leeds in 15th. They've got eight points from seven games. They're currently above Brentford and Nottingham Forest.
00:09:01
Kieran McGinley
And then you've got Burnley in the relegation zone at the moment. So maybe I went a bit too early with that one. But still.
00:09:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, but Sunderland have been good because you know they've they've got three points against Forest.
00:09:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
um They've got points against Villa as well. like They're sitting ninth. like that's It's pretty good. um And and we have' them we haven't really...
00:09:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah we got They scraped over the line against Burnley, but um we need to take those wins when we can.
00:09:25
Kieran McGinley
Oh, yeah. Yeah, we definitely do. But I think it's been a strong showing for the promoted side. So picking up three points from Sundar was crucial, critical.
00:09:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm. ah unhappy players in the squad look it's clear that it's not clear nothing's clear that the that the players are behind the manager you know last week the players were against the manager because we lost so it's it's hard to know but
00:09:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
He came out this week around Xerxes, not happy with his playing time, um looking for potentially ah a lone move in
Transfer Discussions Pre-World Cup
00:10:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
January. He's probably looking at Rashford and Hoyland going, not a bad situation now, is it?
00:10:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Starting in the Champions League, scoring goals, and I'm sitting on the bench with...
00:10:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
not really a a look-in, I suppose, you know, Cesc was going to play every game and we don't have many cup games because we got knocked out by Grimsby. We don't have Champions League. We don't have Europa League. I don't blame him.
00:10:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't blame him for for looking for something different, but it is a bit of a pity. Hmm.
00:10:26
Kieran McGinley
Well, it'll be interesting three and a half months because obviously it's World Cup year. So if any players feel like they're not getting the game time they feel like they deserve, they will want to leave on loan in January in order to get you know the six months to try and prove to the national team manager that they deserve to go to the World Cup.
00:10:42
Kieran McGinley
And it's kind of the reason, you know, why Hoyland and Rashford were so keen and eager on their moves. I mean, maybe not so much Hoyland. He wanted to stay and fight for his place. But now that he's at Napoli and now he's scoring again, he's going to be put back on the Denmark radar again.
00:10:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:10:58
Kieran McGinley
you know ah maybe as you know a squad player, but still going to the World Cup. And that's the whole point. So this is going to be a January here where, again, the Kobe Mainu conundrum is going to come up.
00:11:09
Kieran McGinley
He will demand a loan move because he wants to start for England.
00:11:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:11:13
Kieran McGinley
i mean, he's been in and around the national team before. He's not unfamiliar to it. He knows he can get there. What he's not getting is game time. And that just opens he ourselves up for for January where he not only will want to leave, but I think...
00:11:25
Kieran McGinley
He has to leave on loan if he wants any chance of seeing the England team in six months. And whether that is too late for Thomas Tuchel, whether he'll have made his mind up by then, is anybody's guess. But I think quite a few players who aren't getting playing time will want to leave on loan to try and get to the World Cup. It just would be a daft thing not to try it.
00:11:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's concerning for Maynard. I mean, you're looking at the squad depth now that that England have and you look at the personnel that Tuchel's been playing. You know, he's brought Henderson back in, you know, and it looks like he's going to bring Henderson.
00:12:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, he's a massive fan of him. So, you know, you have Henderson in there. You have Adam Wharton, who's really coming to light. um
00:12:08
Kieran McGinley
was going to say, caveat it with Jordan and Henderson, because you know there's two Hendersons now fighting for England.
00:12:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
You have...
00:12:13
Kieran McGinley
youve got Dean Henderson as well.
00:12:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Yeah, yeah. Well, if Dean Henderson's playing in deep lie in centre mid, then England really are screwed for the World Cup, to be fair.
00:12:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
But, yeah.
00:12:21
Kieran McGinley
ah He could always play it, i reckon.
00:12:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you know what? As an Irish fan, throw him in. I reckon he'll do a job, but ah
00:12:26
Kieran McGinley
Wearing a cap in the midfield...
00:12:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
that'll be iconic.
00:12:30
Kieran McGinley
I mean, it would be iconic.
00:12:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:12:31
Kieran McGinley
It would feel illegal, though.
00:12:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
It would. And you'd need it in the heat in the summer. Like, it's going be it's goingnna be tough going for them.
00:12:35
Kieran McGinley
No, that's true.
00:12:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
So...
00:12:37
Kieran McGinley
Well, they're playing it at night now, aren't they? They're talking about pushing it back. And I was listening to and over in the Global Sports Podcast Network, ah and Nick Britton was obviously saying on ah on the road to World Cup.
00:12:51
Kieran McGinley
So go and listen that if you haven't already. They were talking about their episode in Uruguay and they were talking about how it was announced that the World Cup was going to be pushed back to a later time. And the first thing that came up in the UK media was the pubs are going to stay open later.
00:13:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:13:04
Kieran McGinley
It's like the first thing we think about. Yeah. Great. Brilliant. way to Way to reinforce the stereotype, Blas.
00:13:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, no, it has to be done. It has to be done. Sure, what's the point? um But yeah, you mean you have Elliot ander Anderson now coming into that squad as well. Obviously, Deccan Rice, Bellingham. like It's going to be difficult for him to to find his way back in. i don't think he's been selected for a two-go squad yet as well, so ah he's definitely going to be looking for a move. and Look, I'm sure there'll be a lot of clubs in the Premier League that that will take him on loan for that last six months. And, you know, we've seen players before make a really big push for an England squad in the last few months of the season. I think that Lingard sensation with West Ham those few months, he was absolutely unplayable.
00:13:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
um We've seen, obviously, Grealish has made the move a bit earlier to make sure that he can actually get into that England squad. um So, yeah, it's going be really interesting to see what happens. I'd like to get your thoughts on and another player who's playing for United who hasn't played for England in a while and could make an absolute run for it and has a bit of history with Tuchel.
Mason Mount's England Squad Prospects
00:14:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mason Mount, do you reckon and he's eyeing up a bit of a ah resurgence to the England squad over the next while? Obviously, yeah if he can stay fit, quality player, has got his goal there at the weekend, has a really good relationship with Thomas Tuchel, won the Champions League with him.
00:14:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Could he make a resurgence to get back into that squad?
00:14:30
Kieran McGinley
If he stays fit, and that is so, so important, if he stays fit, I don't see a reason why he doesn't at least make the sort of 23-man squad.
00:14:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:14:40
Kieran McGinley
it It would make sense. He's a good player. I kind of think of him as that box-to-box. What is it now? I think it's 36 caps for England, five goals. So he's not unfamiliar to international football.
00:14:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:14:52
Kieran McGinley
I think he's there's no reason why he can't. But the big thing that will hold him back is his susceptibility to injury and those reoccurring injuries that keep hampering what a good player he can be for the United side.
00:15:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:15:07
Kieran McGinley
So ah don't think it's not possible for Mason. What I think will hold him back are the injuries. And that will be a concern for Tuchel. When he's only got 23 players to to choose from, you've got to be really good.
00:15:22
Kieran McGinley
if you're injury prone, like take Ledley King, who never trained for Tottenham because of the, you know, the ligament issues that he had in his knees, never trained for Tottenham, yet was a top player.
00:15:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:15:33
Kieran McGinley
If you're injury prone and you're looking to make the World Cup, you've got to be the best of the best to be considered.
00:15:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, true. And you need to hit
Tuchel's Reliable Player Focus
00:15:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
form at the right time. You know, if he is coming into April, May and he's starting to fly, you know, it's a form couple of weeks. Like, you know, you could have the best players um that we've seen play for countries that just been out of form at the time, but are excellent players. So, yeah, it'll be really interesting to see. And I think Tuchel is really putting a lot of emphasis on uh being able to trust players and the relationships that he has with them as well from previous so i don't think he'll be going too experimental with this uh england team so yeah it could be a player that's kind of coming from left field the people have forgotten about that he he could make his way back into the squad so let's see let's see but uh we'll take a quick break there and be back with a bit more from um some of the nuggets within this article
00:17:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's about that time where you start to look at expiring contracts.
Football Manager's Addictiveness
00:17:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
um You get your your football manager hat on there, Ciarán, from your your managerial days. and No, no, are you still playing football manager?
00:17:40
Kieran McGinley
Of course. Of course.
00:17:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, yeah.
00:17:42
Kieran McGinley
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm excited for FM26.
00:17:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, i think I need to start to investing in that. I was more of a FIFA man, but career mode kind of FIFA.
00:17:48
Kieran McGinley
ah yet you'll You'll learn the wonders.
00:17:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah.
00:17:51
Kieran McGinley
You'll learn the wonders of Football Manager. Once once you once you get hooked, once it's once it clicks, it doesn't really let go that easily.
00:17:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, that's what I'm concerned about. I think the podcast will go in the bin once Football Manager takes over. I won't won't have any free time, you know?
00:18:04
Kieran McGinley
Only a month to go then, yeah.
00:18:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that is the concern. That is the concern. But expiring contracts, I'm not sure how you dealt with them in your Football Manager career, Ciarán, but couple of big ones.
00:18:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Harry Maguire, Casemiro,
00:18:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
I imagine and I've heard during the week that Harry Maguire wants to stay, but he's going to take a massive cut, I'm sure. Would would you res re-sign Maguire and Casemiro? What's your thinking off the bat in ah October?
Contract Renewals for Key Players
00:18:29
Kieran McGinley
that's it an interesting one.
00:18:35
Kieran McGinley
i but I might get some stick for this. I would probably keep Maguire for another year.
00:18:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:18:42
Kieran McGinley
I don't see why not. I think he's a decent squad player yeah for rotation-wise.
00:18:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:18:48
Kieran McGinley
um He's 32, so i wouldn't i I wouldn't want him to have like a massive three-year contract because that would be silly. But a year extension, I wouldn't totally be too angry about.
00:19:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:19:00
Kieran McGinley
I think it makes sense, but I think you're right.
00:19:02
Kieran McGinley
He will have to take a pay cut. And I think if he wants to stay, that will have to be the case. But i would I would keep him. Casemiro? Now, there's an interesting one. You asked me that question seven, eight months ago.
00:19:16
Kieran McGinley
have said, let his contract run down. But now? Now, even if we only get 60, 70 minutes out of him in a game, i think he's done all right. You know? Maybe not worth the wages he's on.
00:19:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:19:28
Kieran McGinley
However, he's been decent. If we can get him on a cut price, then I would absolutely keep him at the club for another year. He's also, I think, 33, I want to say. Could be wrong on that one. I need to fact check myself. But I would keep the both of them, but only for another year.
00:19:46
Kieran McGinley
You know, it wouldn't make sense to go a multi-year deal.
00:19:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:49
Kieran McGinley
It it just but wouldn't make a lot of sense.
00:19:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. You're killing yourself with multi-year deals. I think with, with these two, um, I would be happy to extend Maguire as well. I think that we've got good depth now in defense and now that he's not starting, he can definitely come in and and fill in holes as well when needed.
00:20:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
The Casemiro one is is ah is a concern because we're so light and poor in midfield, like really poor. And if we were to get rid of Casemiro... like we need a complete midfield overhaul really like similar to what we did for the front three like we need two big midfield signings potentially a third to kind of come in to support um but we're severely lacking in that area know we Bruno playing in there who's playing out of position um even though I think if we had a better midfield partnership I still think he'd play Bruno in there but just because I don't think he's suited for the tens we've spoken about this before but um that is the concern if if
00:20:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
If we didn't backfill Casemiro with two mid-20s proven very good midfielders who are athletic, then I'd want to keep him because we're light and we know we can do a job for 50, 60 minutes.

But um you're right. Will he want to stay on on these cut wages? I don't know. he I get the impression that he would be happy to go to Saudi. I think Maguire would be happy to take a pay cut and stay at United. So let's see what happens.
Midfield Investment Needs
00:21:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
But um yeah, we need to heavily invest in the midfield if we're going to get rid of Casemiro.
00:21:18
Kieran McGinley
Yeah, no, I agree. its It's one of those where it feels like you can't play a full 90 minutes at the moment.
00:21:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:21:25
Kieran McGinley
um And that works right now when we've only got games once every week. But when it starts to get into, you know, hopefully we are a bit more successful and we qualify for Europe and we get further into cup competitions than we have in this season, at least, you know, FA Cups in January. so don't have to worry about that until then.
00:21:43
Kieran McGinley
But But when we start to have two games a week or you know three games in 10 days where you know that success builds on you, Casemiro, I think, is just at that point where maybe we need to let him go.
00:21:56
Kieran McGinley
ah But as a squad player, i think he's not bad. He's not a bad option to have, especially she in a rotation. But one, will he want that role? And two, how much would you be willing to pay for someone who is a rotation squad player?
00:22:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Exactly.
00:22:10
Kieran McGinley
So if he's if he's starting consistently... makes sense to extend him for another year. But both options, whether he stays to help out the team or stays as a squad player, a backup, both need wage cuts if it's going to be realistic.
00:22:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. No, absolutely. And the last thing wanted to touch on was, well, there's a couple of things at the bottom of the article about this JJ
Young Talents in Senior Training
00:22:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Gabriel. I think we might talk about him on another episode, um but just wanted to speak around Shea Lacey. I was going through TikTok earlier and the England training came up and there he is training with the England senior squad. um He was obviously in the England under He's he's a Academy product that's been spoken about for a lot of years at United.
00:23:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's had a lot of injuries, and so probably haven't seen him come through as quickly as some people would have would have imagined. um Very kind of gifted, technically gifted player, left foot, low center of gravity, they can play anywhere across the country.
00:23:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
kind of three in behind the striker so exciting talent but I mean not a bad situation for him to be training with the England senior team get a bit of exposure to that um and make up the the lack of United players in that squad as well but yeah i just thought that was an
00:23:34
Kieran McGinley
Yeah, I mean, it's um it is nice for Shea to have that, you know, senior am men's international training experience. And normally that's reserved for the players that the manager thinks, yeah, you're going to be within five years, you're going to be part of this squad.
00:23:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:23:53
Kieran McGinley
um Because it works roughly the same with whenever you take Chido Obi, for example, and Kobi Manu, when they were plot playing well in their under-21s, they got called up into trading for Manchester United. Now, with Chido Obi, that was because we were short of strikers and they were mostly all injured.
00:24:09
Kieran McGinley
But the point is that there was the potential there for Chido Obi to train with the first team yeah know for it for a stint and have that experience. And I think that is yeah a can be a game changer for players because it's it's dangling the carrot in front of them, isn't it? That's what you want to do. The ambitious players are going to jump on that and say, look, I'm being called up for training with the senior team.
00:24:31
Kieran McGinley
And it's almost a case of, I'm almost there. I just need to push on. Keep going at the rate I'm going. you know The carrot gets dangled and your most ambitious players will will try and leap at that at any cost. So I think for Shea, that's great experience for him and I hope he can press on with it.
00:24:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, no, I agree. I think, and you know, you would have heard of um younger players that were kind of called across from, you know, pitch four to pitch one to train with the the senior team, probably asked the under 21 coach, who do you reckon and can come over?
Integration of Young Talents
00:25:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And you would have heard it with the likes of Bellingham and other top players that went on to be senior pros and and really good so I suppose it's it's promising from a United perspective and just thought it was a nice experience for him as well you know battling against the injuries to kind of keep the momentum of keep pushing and getting better all the time and hopefully he can he can break in and another left- footed attacker to compete with Amadon and Benoit that's exactly what we need maybe it just get someone on the left at some stage would be would be nice yeah
00:25:31
Kieran McGinley
Just say, you know, don't don't break my heart in 10 years, all right? I don't need another one to break my heart within 10 years, okay?
00:25:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah.
00:25:41
Kieran McGinley
Between you and me, all right?
