You are listening to the Inverted Creative Podcast. I'm Allison. I'm Brian. And I'm Jen.
00:00:17
Speaker
Oh my gosh, is that Kelly from the Thrill, Stills & Spills podcast? Hi! Bracing our presence? I'm back! Yay! We haven't had you on in a while. Yeah, it's a little bit.
00:00:28
Speaker
It's been since spooky season. When did we do that episode? Let me... That was pretty early I think. Might have before spooky season, actually. Yeah, I think it was, like, before the season. Crazy.
00:00:45
Speaker
I can't even find it on the list. That says a lot. Well, thanks for having

Microphone Mishaps and Podcasting Stories

00:00:50
Speaker
me back. I'm excited to be here. Yeah, we're excited to have you. You're a very fitting guest for our topic today.
00:00:59
Speaker
Yeah, more things I like. Coasters, spooky stuff, and running. Also, literally, as like the intro was going, I realized I never actually plugged in my microphone. So now I'm just going off my laptop microphone.
00:01:14
Speaker
It sounds great, I bet. That's fine. Hopefully. Yeah. I totally didn't even think about it. I got everything else figured out except for that. Yeah, it sounds fine. Okay. Cool. It's not like you don't have a lot going on in your life right now. No, I don't know what you're talking about.
00:01:31
Speaker
There's nothing going on. I didn't think there was anything going No, I'm kidding.
00:01:39
Speaker
But yeah, busy week, busy week. Yeah, no kidding. This is our second recording this week because we pre-recorded in an episode that's going to come out in a month.

Upcoming Mini-Episode and Road Trip Plans

00:01:50
Speaker
Because, you know, I'll be gone.
00:01:52
Speaker
And I'll be gone. too It was a very fun episode and I'm excited for that. Yeah, that might have been one of my favorite episodes that we've ever recorded. yeah Ooh, I'm excited to listen.
00:02:04
Speaker
Yeah, it's a really it's a really good one. oh the ending. I'm so excited for you guys to see the ending. Yeah. Well, hear the end. Well, I guess see it. don't know. See or hear. If you're on Patreon, see.
00:02:16
Speaker
um If you are on the podcast, hear the ending. But either way, it's a fantastic ending. it could not have ended better. 200 and a thousand out of 10 um i'm probably gonna post something on our instagram story about it the day that it drops yeah it's it's good yeah but y'all will hear that soon but for now this will actually this is the last episode before the wedding that's wild
00:02:48
Speaker
Woo! Yeah. And then you'll get a little mini-sode. Yeah. A little wedding mini-sode with Mike and Allison. Mike and Allison and whoever else is in our car that day. Since we'll be on the road for a little bit.
00:03:03
Speaker
Yeah. I don't know if anyone will be in the car with us. but Yeah, I just realized that Cedar Point is four hours from. Mm-hmm. Kind of regret my decision to add Cedar Point, but.
00:03:19
Speaker
It's like that's half of my drive home. Also gas is like $5 gallon. Yeah, I'm not excited about that now. Yeah, so. It's fine. Everything's fine.
00:03:33
Speaker
if only we could run there instead of taking cars. There's my segue. huh Would be nice. I don't run anywhere so it wouldn't be me but.
00:03:45
Speaker
But you have in the past and that's why. I have in the past. That's what matters. Well, me and Kelly can do a little trip recap that ties into our topic today. And it's half the reason I wanted to do this topic today.
00:04:01
Speaker
We had a little weekend down in Dollywood. Yeah, it was fun. Yeah. Kelly, I know you help plan these

Dollywood Buzz Bars Event and Running Challenges

00:04:10
Speaker
events. don't if you want to talk about some of that behind it.
00:04:13
Speaker
Yeah, so we had a Buzz Bars event this past weekend called Running Dolly's Hills. And um typically, if if you're a lot of people listening might be Buzz Bars members, some maybe not. But typically, when we have events, we either call them stumbles or wobbles. Like stumbles are typically like our larger park focused events. And wobbles are usually like smaller activity or brewery focused events. This is neither. it was built around Dollywood's inaugural um Run Dolly Race Weekend.
00:04:48
Speaker
um And they had a one mile kids run, a 5K, a 10K and a half marathon. And when we heard about this, we were like, hey, we have some people in Buzzbars that like to run. And we have people that like to join programs.
00:05:04
Speaker
um challenges at the beginning of the year. i was like, what if we kind of tie this together and encourage our members to get more active and we can have an event at Dollywood and we can also run or cheer for our runners. And I thought it would be a really unique way to get people involved. um So we kind of pitched it to our our little team and ran with it. Yeah.
00:05:26
Speaker
um And last year we had an event, one of our wobbles, we, um a small group of us ran a 5k there and people that did it really seemed to like it. um We've also included some other like active activities into some of our events as optional add-ons recently. And I think for the people that enjoy that kind of stuff and um enjoy the camaraderie of our events,
00:05:52
Speaker
of our club, which I think is something that makes Buzz Bars really unique and special. um It was kind of a no brainer to try it. So I'm glad we pulled that together. Yeah. and know I know we have the yeah the rope drop challenge going in Buzz Bars the child yeah behind in, but that's okay.
00:06:12
Speaker
Yeah, that's been super fun to kind of follow along with. We started in January. We call it the Rope Drop Challenge. Every month you can add the miles that you've been active. So running or walking, as long as it's for exercise, um it counts. And then we kind of get medals for every milestone that we hit. I have one right here for somebody who knows. They're just everywhere in my house. But basically every mile is...
00:06:37
Speaker
or every mile milestone is medal after a coaster. So like this one is one hundred miles. So this is time traveler because it's a hundred feet tall. So, you know, we're just really nerdy up in here, encouraging and running, but it's been really fun and it's a really nice place that we've been able to encourage each other. you know, everybody has bad days running or things they have to overcome or injuries. So it's been, it's been really fun to incorporate things.
00:07:05
Speaker
Two different communities that I really love together. i love the little medals too. Like not going lie. That's half of why signed up for the Rope Drop Challenge. I always will say we'll run for medals. We'll run for medals. Medals are 100% a determining factor on if I do a run or not. 100%.
00:07:24
Speaker
hundred percent Well, I'm really proud of our group because we, when we signed up for this event, pretty much the 5k was already sold out. And I thought that's where we would maybe have a lot of interest because it's an attainable distance for people who are new to running to do or people can walk it. um But it was sold out already like and instantaneously. So we had about 10 people run the 10k and about 10 people run the half marathon, which I thought was really impressive. And I was proud of us.
00:07:55
Speaker
I had originally signed up for the half marathon. Um, Brambo was kind of the one that helped me just say, you know, screw it and sign up for a race. But when I did, the 10 K was sold out. So I went ahead signed up for the half marathon.
00:08:07
Speaker
Um, and then my, uh, training kind of went awry, but I was able to move down to the 10 even though it was sold out. And I felt a lot better about that decision.
00:08:19
Speaker
Yeah. A lot of people shifted races based on how their training was going, which was good. Yeah. Nice feature. I was very glad that I was able to do that. I ate a little bit of the cost, but I really didn't care.
00:08:30
Speaker
Yeah. It was worth it for my own motivation. don't the word.
00:08:38
Speaker
Yeah. there's There's a word there. Um,
00:08:43
Speaker
Yeah, I know we started, people got to the event a lot earlier than I did. There were mountain coasters to be had. Yeah, I saw so many mountain coasters. Oh, man.
00:08:54
Speaker
That was me on Sunday. we went and did a whole bunch of mountain coasters so I could get to a certain point so I can get the milestone that I wanted. I spent a lot of money to do it. And I'm very happy to say I did it.
00:09:08
Speaker
I still don't even have half of the Gatlinburg Pigeon Forge mountain coasters. It's just hard to get around to them. But there are quite a few. My children and loved the two that we did They were living their best life.
00:09:25
Speaker
Did they do like both sides of the racing coaster? We only did one side of the racing coaster, but we also did Lost Mine, which I had done before, but I remembered really enjoying the theming. So we took them there.
00:09:36
Speaker
Yeah, that's we ended up at Lost Mine. At least we just recently done the racing coaster and didn't want to spend the money on doing that one again. But yeah. Yeah, was fun. We got there pretty early on Friday. My little caravan of we brought my kids to this event and we got our packets from the packet pickup, which I guess we could talk about the expo. Did you go to the expo at all? and No, we weren't able to get down there in time.
00:10:00
Speaker
So it was in the now I'm going to mess up the names of their resorts. There's like the heart song and the dream more. OK, so it was in the heart song resort, like in their little event center. It was a very small space.
00:10:15
Speaker
We can get into our history of running if that's something that you guys want to talk about. But it was very well organized, but very small scale. So it was like you walk in, you get your bib, you get your shirt, you get your park tickets that you could get with your race entry if you needed them. And then there were like a couple of vendors and that was it. It was like very compact and small for like a larger races expo. But it it was impressively run for their first time doing doing a race like this. Yeah.
00:10:46
Speaker
So we did that. And then we went to the park most of the day, my family, because I knew that it would be a little trickier to get on the rides on Saturday and the weather wasn't looking as promising. So I wanted my kids who are like basically tall enough for everything at Dollywood now, which is so fun to ride everything that they wanted to ride, which we did. it was great.
00:11:08
Speaker
Yeah, I've been to Dollywood multiple times. So I went for one hour after the race. I went in, I was handed a cinnamon bread plushie that I've been wanting that Mike finagled for me. Have you that by the way, Kelly?
00:11:24
Speaker
Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Oh God, I needed it. And I talked about it on the podcast and Mike was able to get one for me. And then I rode Big Bear Mountain and then left. Yeah, my kids loved Big Bear Mountain. That was their favorite. And it is so good. Like, I forgot, like, it is such a good family coaster.
00:11:42
Speaker
Yeah. And long. really is. It really is. i think, i don't know if um On Ride Audio is working. Our first ride, I heard the bear, like, growls, but not after that. Disappointing. So, don't know.
00:12:00
Speaker
Off and on. My first time riding chain rod.
00:12:07
Speaker
I have no opinions about it. I'm just like, okay. It feels like a little slower than lightning rod. And the last time I rode lightning rod was like years ago. So it's just a little bit like there was a pothole. I'm like, oh, this is a little rougher, but also

On-Course Nutrition and Race Organization

00:12:20
Speaker
Amelia was sitting on it. And I can't really focus on rides when my kids are there. Cause I'm just like, are you okay?
00:12:27
Speaker
So, but she liked it. She looked stunned, but she liked it. It's her third RMC and her least favorite so far. Lightning Rod was never really my favorite anyway. so Yeah, me either. I just don't understand how Lightning Rod could ever be someone's favorite in a park that has Thunderhead and Tennessee Tornado.
00:12:46
Speaker
Thunderhead is the GOAT. yeah Thunderhead is the most incredible wooden coaster in the United States. Agree. It's my highest ranked. It's so good. I don't know if that's a hot take, but. Like, how do you. Yeah, I don't know how.
00:13:02
Speaker
We're about to get a lightning rod. I don't care if lightning rod was like 10 percent better with the launch. Nope. Don't don't care. Yeah. kind of It ends too quick.
00:13:12
Speaker
Right when it gets going, it stops. And that's my biggest issue with it. I don't know. It also just like feels kind of repetitive to me.
00:13:21
Speaker
Yeah, I don't know. It doesn't give me the same... don't feel like RMCs get that way unless they're extra unique.
00:13:32
Speaker
Yeah. They do, kind of. Like, they all have the same shaping. They all the same... It's like you can almost anticipate what it's going to feel like because you've just felt it so many other times, you know? yeah Yeah.
00:13:44
Speaker
Yeah, I agree. They definitely do feel... Except for, I feel like the only one that does that doesn't get like that is Wildcat's Revenge. So good.
00:13:56
Speaker
That one's profiling is so different. So good. It is so good. But yeah. and I don't care what anyone has to say about Lightning Rod. Yeah. We only talk about Tennessee Tornado and Thunderhead here. That's it.
00:14:11
Speaker
I didn't get to ride Tennessee Tornado this trip because Benny was afraid. He saw the big loop and he was like, I ain't doing that. i said, that's fine. So Amelia went and I stayed with Ben.
00:14:21
Speaker
um Poor guy. But he did ride Mystery Mine and was like totally fine. what He just didn't know. Like, he's just like, okay, yeah. So, interesting. hero wrote Thunderhead.
00:14:36
Speaker
All the Wildwood group Grove coasters. So, they had a great time on Friday. We also went went to a brewery before you got there. Iron Forge. It was fine. They had, like, pretty good food.
00:14:48
Speaker
Which I carb loaded two days in a row, baby. Pasta on pasta. a We 100% went to Fazoli's on the way down. so Yeah. Yeah. yeah So, Saturday, it was...
00:15:01
Speaker
it was rainy it was misty yeah saturday was the 5k and the 10k and the kids run so the 5k started pretty early we had one member run the 5k and she said it was just dark yeah which like that sounds accurate and then the 10k happened it started at 8 30 right um A bunch of us ran. i and my children um spectated, which was super fun. We made big heads of everyone on a stick and we were screaming at everyone as they ran by.
00:15:38
Speaker
um We caught them once in the parking lot where we parked our car and then at the finish line. um These courses were wild. Yeah. They were wild. Okay. They like circled around the parking lot. Obviously I can't speak to the 10 K because I didn't run it, but I know that you went around the parking lots a bunch. There was a lot of elevation change happening in these runs and yeah, The finish line was up a steep hill. was so mean.
00:16:06
Speaker
I was so ready to to like sprint to the finish. And I'm like, nope, nope. That is criminal. So much of the year I was like, turn it around. Just turn it around. Make people feel good when they finish. The worst part for me was at mile like four, going right next to the finish line.
00:16:24
Speaker
Yeah, that was rough. So we did that too. We did that too in our course, but we did it really early on. So it was like, okay. I was literally like hearing everybody finish like so much further but ahead of me and just like wanting to cry, knowing that I still had two miles left.
00:16:43
Speaker
You did great. Everyone did great. I was slow, but I finished. I was genuinely worried about getting swept when I saw the time limit. But I got to like the halfway point and looked at my time. I'm like, oh, yeah, I'm good. I'll be OK. Yeah, totally fine.
00:16:59
Speaker
like How was for the first time? What's that? I got to see the water park for the first time. Yeah, i don't know that I knew there was one. I'm going to be honest. But there is indeed one. um How did you feel about like the elevation changes?
00:17:16
Speaker
Oh, I could feel it for the next know afterwards. Yeah. I had done like hills in my training. Yeah. I didn't have very, well, I didn't have training, but we don't need to get into that. But um I thought that the race was really well organized. They had everything like start and finish at the same spot in a parking lot. And they had like...
00:17:37
Speaker
all of the things that you would have at like a start line, finish line, like a bag drop. And they had port-a-potties and the whole thing. They had really good announcers. I would say like the downside was that because it was like a closed course, otherwise, other than like the start and finish line, there weren't very many places that people, especially on the half marathon that people could really spectate.
00:17:56
Speaker
Yeah. Um, which really helps ah in my opinion. um, So that was a downside, but they did really good with their like water stations. They had aid stations where they had water Gatorade.
00:18:11
Speaker
I know that they had goo at some of our stations. They had a cinnamon bread station, which I had heard. Did you do it? Yes. I didn't do it because I had heard that when you put it in your mouth, it just got stuck in there. And I was like, oh, I was so thirsty afterwards. Yes. Cinnamon bread. Yeah.
00:18:29
Speaker
I was like, im I want this cinnamon bread. Like everything in me wants to eat this, but I just imagined it being stuck in my mouth and not being able to breathe. So I was like, a hard pass. It was fantastic for about five seconds.
00:18:43
Speaker
And I'm like, oh, this is delicious. ah We also, both the 10K and half marathon, got to run through the park. um And they had some, like, on-course entertainment.
00:18:55
Speaker
um I guess I'm jumping ahead. to The half marathon was on Sunday. But either way, we both ran races. um and um
00:19:08
Speaker
How do we fix that? I just muted it myself. Guys, i I don't know when I muted myself, but I was communicating and I was participating in the conversation about the cinnamon bread. like fasting You guys left me like these perfect...
00:19:26
Speaker
sections of like you continued talking right after I said something and you were like is going on well I mean like it wasn't off enough that I even realized it until I just said something and you just started talking and then I was like I'm muted don't know how long I've been muted amazing um I hope you guys enjoy that um I all I did was say that the cinnamon bread on the courses does not sound like a good idea to me. It was not. wild. But I still do.
00:19:56
Speaker
During the half marathon, you could run Blazing Fury and Big Bear Mountain. um I did not do it because I feared I would cramp and not be able to get up. So... Yeah.
00:20:07
Speaker
I did not partake. But... It was a cool option for people running that race. Our race was on Sunday. It started extremely excruciatingly early at 530 in the morning.
00:20:19
Speaker
So it was going full Disney style. We woke up, my alarm went off at 345. And honestly... and honestly I don't know what it was about this race, but I was feeling way better than I expected. That's good. Way better than I expected. I ran much slower than my typical half marathon pace, um but I am injured and was cleared to run days before this. And I have not been training for like the last seven weeks, like literally at all.
00:20:47
Speaker
I've been in rehab. So... I ate all of the pasta. I ate all of the things I, for the first time ever, did a um I did nutrition every three miles on the course. And that was amazing. I don't know why my whole life I've been putting off taking nutrition on course until later. I'm like, oh, like this is what you're supposed to do. And it actually works.
00:21:13
Speaker
ah you know Now I know. so I'm going to take that with me. changed It also gave me something to look forward to every three miles. I'm like, okay, you just have to make it three more miles and then you can have more goo.
00:21:26
Speaker
So. I'm not a fan of goo. Oh, I love goo. But started doing honey stingers before every long run. And those are amazing for me.
00:21:38
Speaker
Yeah, I like those. i use the goo packets and honey stingers sometimes at CrossFit events when I used to do CrossFit. Yeah, I love the goo. It's like the only thing that I've been able to get down while running without it like completely messing up my like breathing flow.
00:21:55
Speaker
like, okay, we just got to squirt this puppy in there and then slowly let it down. That was a way to describe it. Thank you. That was so accurate, though. Yeah.
00:22:08
Speaker
I really like when people give you, like, jelly beans. i I do like the running jelly beans, too. Yeah, like sport beans or whatever. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, there were hills. don't think they had any nutrition on the 10K, so.
00:22:24
Speaker
They're water and Gatorade. And cinnamon bread. Cinnamon bread. cinnamon bread... have water with it like or no you don't criminal it was okay it was not like a huge amount of cinnamon bread it was a bit like a bite that bit yeah and put into like a little condiment cup yeah but i saw that ball it looked like a really i saw someone make a reel about it it looked like it was like a really condensed piece of cinnamon bread it wasn't like a cut out ball that was like wasn't it like squished into a ball
00:22:59
Speaker
That's what it looked like anyway. It looked like a dense ball of cinnamon bread. Yeah, that is a dense ball of cinnamon bread. eat water I made the right choice.
00:23:11
Speaker
I'm digging it for the experience, okay? It's going to hit your stomach like a brick. Oh, no, it just like dried out my throat, which I absolutely needed that. Ours was at like mile 11 and a half. And I was like, should I just hold this for a mile and a half and eat it when I finish?
00:23:28
Speaker
It's like the daily races where people run across with a margarita, run across with the cinnamon bread.
00:23:36
Speaker
Oh, good times. There's always good times when you're fighting for your life. I could not imagine like running. I give it to you guys. That park is hard to walk around. Like after you've been there all day, i could not imagine running that. It's really impressive.
00:23:52
Speaker
like Mike was tracking my location and like we're going through one part of the park and he messaged me. He's like, I feel like you're probably fighting for your life right now. I'm like, yeah. Honestly, okay. So our worst elevation was like on the roads outside of the park. yeah But you were rewarded with downhills.
00:24:09
Speaker
Which... Didn't wasn't great for me because of my injury, but like in a normal situation, I would have liked that. I struggled the most and maybe it's just because it was mile 11 and that's where I always struggle was inside the park. And I was looking forward to that because I was like, oh, I'll be distracted. Like I'll look at all the things and I'll like look at the coasters. And I wanted to die in there. I was like, get me out of here. I have so much further to go. Like, I don't know. That was the my that was my low point, unfortunately, but yeah.
00:24:40
Speaker
Where was the park in your course? Was it towards the end? Yeah, it was at like 10 and a half to 11 and a half. Oh, wow. Okay. Yeah. It was like all pre 5k for us.
00:24:51
Speaker
Yeah, I saw that. You guys kind of started in that direction. I was like, oh, that's nice. That's nice of them. um I know we we came back through the parking lot um as like cars were getting let in for the day.
00:25:06
Speaker
um And that was when Mike texted me. He's like, I'm not going to be able to make it to the finish line. And I was really sad because I thought that meant he wasn't going to come cheer me on at all. um But they found me like right by mile four. There was just a caravan of people.
00:25:18
Speaker
And then I stopped and they were all yelling for me and got to go hug Mike and then get back on the course. Oh, nice. it was It was much needed at that point. Yeah, it was so fun.
00:25:30
Speaker
um And then I had about half a mile left when the sky opened up. And I was worried that everybody who was still out there at the finish line wanting to cheer, figured they would have wanted to leave because I was so slow. Not this girl. Standing in the rain. Yeah.
00:25:48
Speaker
so i do I had to say because my kids were in the kids run and i like accompanied them. So i was like, we're doing it. We're, we're fully in the storm. We're doing it. I genuinely appreciated it that there were so many people out there still.
00:26:04
Speaker
Yeah, it was so fun. The high fives all the way down as I was dying. Dude, the running community is some of the nicest, most encouraging people ever. I meet so many nice people at races. Like it just it really like gives me the happy that I need.
00:26:20
Speaker
hmm.
00:26:22
Speaker
Yeah, when I ran my half marathon at Disney, there was this girl that, like, adopted me on the course. We just, like, talked once or twice. She, like, adopted me on the course. And, ah like, I was so nervous I was going to get swept because of my injury. Because I did plan to train and then I didn't train because I was injured.
00:26:42
Speaker
Um, and I was like, I'm so scared. I'm get her. She did not leave me the entire run. Oh, that's the best. I had a guy. um it was his first half marathon, um, the last like four miles with me. And I was like walk running just because I was told to do that and probably needed to at that point for my hip. So like he was just kind of jogging slow. So i would like pass him and then I would walk and he would pass me and every time we would pass each other, we would fist bump.
00:27:12
Speaker
And then in the last mile, I finally asked him what his name was and he finished like 10 feet ahead of me and I was just like screaming his name. It was so fun. That's cool. Yeah.
00:27:24
Speaker
I love that. What was his name? T. I don't know what his actual name was, but he told me his name was T. Well, shout out to him. Yeah, shout out d
00:27:38
Speaker
Thanks for the fist bumps, T. Motivation. We love it. maho T sounds sweet.
00:27:48
Speaker
Sorry. yeah
00:27:52
Speaker
Yeah, overall, I think I was impressed with how well organized it was. The course was a little cruel. I'm like, did they really have to do this like this? um But I was proud like that.
00:28:04
Speaker
So many of us did it. The half marathon course had a net elevation gain of 1300 feet. Just truly wild. Oh, my goodness. certainly I would have quit.
00:28:17
Speaker
That's more than two Falcons flights. Yeah.
00:28:23
Speaker
That's kind of crazy. I feel like especially for a park event, because you're going go to get a lot of people that are doing it because it's something cool to do at the park. Yeah. um That feels especially insane. Yeah. Yeah.
00:28:39
Speaker
I wonder, i I didn't, we didn't stay till the end of the half marathon, but I wonder how it went with the, ah with the caboose because they were saying that they were enforcing 16 minute mile pace. And that's like, you got to walk fast to walk that.
00:28:54
Speaker
yeah So I don't know. I don't know how that turned out. They did not enforce it on the 10 K course. Oh, they didn't? No. I feel like 10 K is not long enough to really like go into their park day.
00:29:08
Speaker
job. I don't know It started late enough that people were filling up the parking lot while we were still running through the parking lot. okay. oh Interesting.
00:29:19
Speaker
I could see if they were trying to get everyone out of there. But I didn't get swept, so I was happy. You did great. I think i think the event was was well done. I would i would reach return even though the course was challenging. I would love to run it like healthy.
00:29:36
Speaker
Yeah. I had a really good time. I'd be curious to see what they do with medals in the future too. Yeah. Medals are pretty. don't even know what mine is. I wonder if they'll be the same every year or if they'll change them up.
00:29:51
Speaker
Well, they're they're planning a fall one already. Yeah, they already ah um are advertising a fall one. I wonder if it'll be the same. I went on the website to see if it's like the same course and setup and stuff and they just don't have that stuff up there yet.
00:30:05
Speaker
Hopefully it's different because it would be kind of weird to do the exact same thing twice a year. Yeah. Maybe just reverse the course or something for each one. Yeah. Finish downhill, my guy. That's rough.
00:30:22
Speaker
Yeah. Overall, enjoyed it. Was glad I did it. Even though i was regretting every second of it when I was actually running. But the high afterwards is so worth it.
00:30:32
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. That excitement when you finish a race is like 10 out of 10. It is 10 out of 10. I've done a lot of races. lot of races. But this was my first um associated with a park.
00:30:51
Speaker
Oh, really? Surprisingly. I mean, i consider Disney being associated with a park. Yeah, i haven't done it. i oh okay I have my first run Disney race in January of next year.
00:31:07
Speaker
You're doing the marathon, right? I am. Hopefully. Hopefully. Body willing. I've always wanted to do the Disney marathon. I'm really excited.
00:31:20
Speaker
Excited for the whole experience. I've been doing a lot of research on how it goes and listening to a lot of run Disney podcasts. And i booked, um I booked, they opened up like the rooms for 27. So I already booked my room.
00:31:36
Speaker
doing Coronado because i heard that it's pretty quiet and like, it's relatively close to Epcot, obviously. And that's where the start and finish are. So i was like, Leaves less room for me to stress out at like two in the morning when I have to get on the runner bus and go over there. So in yeah, that's part of the reason I chose to do wine and dine most of the time because I would literally, it started at TTC and I loved being able to stay at the Polynesian and just walking over and not worrying about a bus. Nice little warmup walk.
00:32:10
Speaker
Yeah, that's nice. It's like the best setup. Their shuttles are really good. Like they have like the nice coach buses for the shuttles. Yeah. I did take the shuttles back because the finish lines were in different spots. But it's like, I don't want wake up any earlier than And it's going to rough. That's a whole other thing.
00:32:27
Speaker
There were days I was like, I think I was on the shuttle bus at like 2.30 or something heinous. Yeah, it's like wild what people say to do. But we will do it and it's going be great. I'm very excited. I know. um So Dorney and Hershey used to have like runs through their parks, but they haven't in a while. Dorney is bringing it back this year, but it's a weekend that I'm out of town. So I'm bummed about that. It's in

Upcoming Races and Event Participation

00:32:50
Speaker
October.
00:32:51
Speaker
um And then i am running the run and ride at King's Dominion is my next race at the end of May. So see how that goes. Have they done that race before? or is this Yes, apparently they have. I think the course is maybe be a little bit different this year. it appears very flat. It's like two loops through like the park and parking lot and like where the campground is, I think. And then that's it.
00:33:15
Speaker
Sounds like a good one. Yeah, hopefully the weather will cooperate. If it wasn't like two days after we get home I would consider it. And, you know, it's Mike and I. So I actually at one point said, hey, Mike, you want to go to King's Dominion like a day and a half after we get home?
00:33:31
Speaker
You totally can. It's still open for registration. He never said no. I just don't know if my body will be able to handle it. Yes, girl, you just do it. You just do it. I would die.
00:33:43
Speaker
that would not be happening for me. After, you know, two weeks in Europe and inevitable jet lag and Yeah, also, like, if you asked me to do it when I landed in Europe, game. But asking me to do it after coming back, it takes me, like, five days to recover. Yeah, it's rough. It's rough going this way. It's the same thing flying that direction anywhere. I go to California, it's only three hours different, and I'm struggling. But going to Europe, I do fine every time.
00:34:09
Speaker
Yeah, I'm, like, six hours that way. I didn't sleep on the plane a single minute. Fine. Fine. not coming home and then even coming home i'm like oh i get like a double sleep like if i want to sleep on the plane i could sleep again tonight in my bed but like it still doesn't matter i'm still tired yeah it's awful i i had never really had an issue with jet lag until coming back from the uk for whatever reason and the next day i was i was done like yeah yeah that's the hardest holding a three hour nap passed out
00:34:45
Speaker
So I don't know if I'll be able to do a run in Virginia. ah I'll continue to attempt to peer pressure you. Running out of time. if Because I'm running by myself.
00:34:56
Speaker
Like alone. At my lonesome. Worth noting, I probably wouldn't do the half marathon. It's okay. It's the same course as the 10K. Is it just twice?
00:35:08
Speaker
Yes. That seems boring. Okay, i have an un I have a question followed by a potential unpopular opinion. Do you run with music?
00:35:22
Speaker
Yes. During races too? Yes. Yeah, I think I'm, I i raw dog it, man. i got nothing. I'm listening to the sounds of my borderline asthma and like the people's footsteps around me To be fair for this one, um i had one headphone in so I could hear still what was going on around me.
00:35:44
Speaker
Yeah. Mostly for everything. But there were times when I paused my music to like listen to things and then just forgot to turn it back on for like a solid mile. I'm like, oh, yeah I was listening to something.
00:35:56
Speaker
This kind of started for me because I hate every headphone I try. I just don't like running with stuff anywhere near or on me at all. So when I'm running a alone, sometimes I'll listen to music just like blasting out of my phone, which is the worst type of red flag, I think. But i During the race, I'm not going to do that because it's embarrassing. But I actually enjoy not having anything to listen to because I feel like I can hear people's conversations. I can like talk with people here and there. Here are the crowd.
00:36:26
Speaker
really enjoy appreciate it most at the starting line and the finish line because at the starting line, I was like, I had my playlist on and was like hyping myself up. But then I put one song on that was a lot more chill. And I'm like, it gave me a second to like stop and breathe before starting. And I really needed that.
00:36:43
Speaker
um And then I use the same finished song every single run. Oh, that's cool. Every single run. So for like the last quarter mile, I put that song on full volume. What is it? It's called Blade.
00:36:55
Speaker
Okay. don't know. Something about it. It just makes me run every time. That's great. So that was what I was listening to as I high fived you guys down the finish shoot.
00:37:08
Speaker
That was so fun. some Some of our runners were so locked in that I had their giant head on a stick and I was screaming like a banshee and they were looking straight ahead. Didn't even see me.
00:37:18
Speaker
well I was 100% looking for you guys because I needed it Yeah, I know that my head got lost into the ah half marathon pile, which is yeah yeah I didn't have your big head. I was like, where's Allison's head? I was like, oh, no, I put it in the wrong pile. I forgot she moved races.
00:37:33
Speaker
So I was just like screaming. was a good picture of me to use one of my favorite pictures. So thank you. You're welcome. I was worried it was going to be just like an absolutely terrible, terrible one that I hate.
00:37:44
Speaker
But no, it's one of my favorites. So thank you. You're welcome. Not that it matter. You got to see it. That's what counts. Yeah.
00:37:57
Speaker
Jen, what run Disney races have you done? I actually don't even know. Wine and Dine. I always did Wine and Dine. Actually, the year that I tried to switch, or like, not tried to, but like the year I was planning to switch, um i signed up for Princess and...
00:38:17
Speaker
COVID. I was literally supposed to run princess. um That silly thing. COVID. Yeah. I don't know if it was like, I guess it would have been the next year because i think princess would have happened in 2020.
00:38:31
Speaker
um So I must've signed up, but then they still didn't. Cause at the beginning they were like still doing signups thinking everything would be open and back to normal. Yeah. But then I think I got cancelled.
00:38:42
Speaker
um But I definitely had my registration done. And then got the money back unfortunately. um So. I've only done Wine and Dine. I've done Wine and Dine.
00:38:54
Speaker
me and Run Disney have like beef. Um. If any of you guys did not know this, Marie is like my favorite Disney character.
00:39:05
Speaker
um Huge Marie fan. I have one, two, three Aristocats tattoos on my body. I did not know this. Yes, I have one that says, i do not, or ladies do not start fights on my elbow. i have cats, Thomas and Duchess on my shoulder. And then I actually have all three kittens in watercolor on my thigh.
00:39:27
Speaker
I did not know this. Yeah, it's like down my thigh. Like, I have three Aristocats tattoos. I love Marie. So I signed up for Wine and Dine, like, three different years in a row. And every race that I chose to win, Marie was at the opposite races.
00:39:43
Speaker
So, like, there were two years that I ran in the 5 and 10 Ks. um I did both of them and Marie was at the half marathon. So then finally the next year I was like, I'm going to just go for it and do the half marathon. It'll be fine. I'll figure it out. Um, but I just want to get a picture with Marie. I dressed as Marie three years in a row. guess where she was that year?
00:40:12
Speaker
and guess where she was that year She was demoted. She was on the 10K, of course. i was so mad. i don't think I've ever been so mad in my entire life.
00:40:24
Speaker
I actually have a... um Back when my Instagram was um generally on Main Street and not generally at theme parks. Fun little lore. Yeah, like little baby Jen.
00:40:37
Speaker
yeah like little baby jen um it I literally had this whole rant. Like I'm like walking through the Polynesian and i was like, I need everyone to know. I i'm mad. And I'm like yelling in this video, I'm angry. Amazing. So mad.
00:40:55
Speaker
I also went the day that the Riviera opened, I went running to the Riviera. I literally ran as fast as I could because I heard Marie was there, but she was in the back in a private room for only people who were invited. oh I was ready to knock down doors at that resort. Yeah.
00:41:16
Speaker
Have you gotten to meet Marie yet, by the way? I have met Marie actually once. um But my pictures, the lighting was... I met her at a Moonlight Magic event at the Magic Kingdom. um But my the lighting in the pictures is so bad. So they're just like really bad pictures. um Which is so unfortunate. um And actually, like my first trip to Disney that I like remember, not as a kid, was the... My first day at Disney World was the last day she ever met on Main Street.
00:41:46
Speaker
Oh, wow. And I did not meet her. Because I didn't... I was at... I don't think we went to Magic Kingdom the first day. Or if we did, I don't think we knew it was like her last day. um i wasn't into lore. So um I have not... I have zero good pictures with Marie.
00:42:04
Speaker
um Unfortunately. But I do have probably the largest supply of Marie merch of any person ever. Like...
00:42:16
Speaker
Big fan. So yes, that is my reason. i only ever run Wine and Dine because I really just want a picture with this stupid cat. I run for medals, you run for Marie.
00:42:28
Speaker
Literally. like So that then after that, and then COVID canceled Princess, I was like, you know I don't even like running. Why am I doing this? But they are really fun events. like I will always walk away from those events being happy that I did them, even though i I'm not a runner. Yeah. um They're just really special.
00:42:51
Speaker
I have no idea what is happening, but Kelly has like a fog machine going off. Yeah, it's just my spooky vibe. No, I had a candle. I just blew it out because it was getting like too low. It's like right over the camera. sounds's got to go actually here
00:43:11
Speaker
so I know Disney was my first half marathon that i ever did. Maybe my second one, too. I did ah the princess half in 2012. I'm showing my age. And the dark side half, I forget what year. i literally looked at the metal. The dark side half was one I wanted to do, but when I... like they They stopped doing those ones. Yeah, yeah it didn't last very long.
00:43:40
Speaker
I had the metal here. I don't know where it went already. This is what I get for... trying to set those aside um yeah so i did the whatever inaugural dark side half which was really cool and like um kylo ren was there on the course that was kind of cool that's sick um i've done the star wars 5k and that was one where there was a rain delay in the morning so we sat on a bus for an extra hour and and then ran around uh like the boardwalk hotels and epcot in the rain
00:44:15
Speaker
But it was fun. um And I've done actually the 5K that they have at the Disney Cruise Line Island. Oh, cool. Oh, that's a cool one. Yeah, that was it's so yeah, the Castaway Key 5K.
00:44:29
Speaker
It's free. Like it's included if you do it or whatever. um and You get a little plastic metal out of it. You run on an old like airstrip. with oh With no shade.
00:44:40
Speaker
Hot. Sounds hot. Yeah, but i it was pretty cool. Yeah. I was glad I did it. If there's one thing that's going to make or break a run for me, it is hotness. Heat.
00:44:52
Speaker
Hotness is not a word. Heat kills me. Kills my pace and kills me. Especially if the heat is coming from direct sunlight. Yeah. I want it to be dark.
00:45:03
Speaker
Dark and dingy and cold. Okay. 2016 was the dark side one. That was later than I thought. Oh, that's cool. like oh that's cool Oh, I love it Yeah, that's a a really cool one.
00:45:17
Speaker
Yeah. um So those are my, at least my Disney ones I've done. Well, I will hopefully join you guys and run Disney experience in 2027.
00:45:30
Speaker
I would love to go back and do another one. It's just registration is so difficult. It's literally like the Hunger Games. You guys are wild. It was wild. It happened while I was at work because it was a Tuesday. And I had 12 different screens up between like my coworkers, like waiting to enter the queue. And only my screen made it out of 12. Yeah.
00:45:51
Speaker
geez yeah it's bad do they still do i don't think they do it anymore but like pre-covid they also they used to do sponsor bibs so like if you couldn't get in you could you can do a charity you can can you still do it dollars yeah it's how much a thousand i think for the full oh it used to be like same price oh um I think it used to be like not same price. Maybe, maybe it was like a hundred dollars extra, but it was not a thousand for the full. Yeah. it's just getting wild. Like I did so much research listening to people on like how to get in into the race, you know, and it just shouldn't like be that hard. I mean, I, I get why it is. You can't have an unlimited race capacity, but that's just wild.
00:46:39
Speaker
And like, I got really lucky. Like, I know a lot of people who tried to get in and didn't. And it was my first time ever trying. But like I said, i had one out of 12 screens even make it into the queue before it was sold out.
00:46:51
Speaker
Yeah, it sells out at the same time. So it was just like random, you know. i don't know how it got like so bad over the past, like, you know, 10 whatever years, because when I signed up for ours, no issue.
00:47:04
Speaker
Yeah, I feel like they got way more popular. Like, I definitely feel like 2018, 2019, like, that is when they really started to take off. And then by coming back after COVID, it was just, like, impossible. They gotta have more than four race weekends then, because it's, like, kind of, i don't know.
00:47:25
Speaker
Yeah. have a little bit beef with that. They definitely have, like, they have the means to do more than four week race weekends. And only one of them right now has a full marathon.
00:47:36
Speaker
Yeah. like... I think that's kind of been the tradition, though. Yeah, but also I think that's because the full marathon, like, they really need to shut down roads, like, during busy times that people have to get on. So, like, I understand not having a full More than once a year.
00:47:52
Speaker
But definitely the halves. Like you're on those courses so early in the morning. That shutting down the road doesn't really matter. Like no one's at Disney property at 5 o'clock in the morning.
00:48:03
Speaker
And if they are it's like. but What? Five people. Driving around like.
00:48:11
Speaker
It's not. any Anyone. I'm excited to experience it. It is a really special. If you see Marie, let you know. If you see Marie, I might actually fist fight you, but it's fine.
00:48:28
Speaker
we I don't think I'm going to have it in me to be stop going for for photo stops. like if i saw you guys have to take a You could take a cute little high photo as you run by in the giant line waiting for her. yeah That is one thing that I loved about the course. I don't know how busy the like photo and entertainment stops are now.
00:48:47
Speaker
With how crazy people are for the races. But there were some cool photo ops. Yeah. And like we took advantage of a lot. We were not focused on time at all. So the photo ops are still just as crazy. But I think that's 90% of the reason that they're so hard to get into now. Because there's so many people that are doing it not for that. Because they like running. Because they want to run. It's because...
00:49:13
Speaker
They want the cool character opportunities. I hate running and I signed up for five run Disney races to meet a cat.
00:49:25
Speaker
It's me. Hi, I'm the problem. It's me. Yeah. And how many miles did you run without meeting the cat? I, oh my. Add those puppies up. Yeah. I wrote, what is it? 12? 13.1 half.
00:49:37
Speaker
thirteen twenty one is a half
00:49:42
Speaker
13.1 is the half. Yeah, so I did 18 and then the 13 plus.1 because I did two 10Ks so that's what, 12 miles? 12.4. 12.4 then I did two Plus another 6.2. 18.6. 18.6.
00:49:55
Speaker
We're mapping! then 13 what is it, 13.1? Yeah. five ks plus another six point two eighteen point point six eighteen point graphpping and then thirteen point what is it thirteen point one yeah
00:50:14
Speaker
21.31. 31.31. We got there, y'all. We got there. We ran more than 30 miles without meeting that cat. I ran more than 30 miles without meeting that stupid cat.
00:50:31
Speaker
I'm writing that down as a quote for the episode art, by the way.
00:50:37
Speaker
And now I'm not going to run for a cat. I learned my lesson. That's
00:50:48
Speaker
why I run for medals, not for cats. Yeah, I did get a mimosa on the boardwalk, though. m That was kind of cool. Like, mid-race, stop, get a mimosa. I love running on boardwalk.
00:51:01
Speaker
Yeah. Feels so good. It was, like, the best part of the... Race.
00:51:10
Speaker
Definitely. Running through the castle is pretty cool. I never did a race at the castle. That's true. You always do one and done. I always do Epcot. Or the 5k the one year I did it was at Animal Kingdom.
00:51:24
Speaker
that's cool. Yeah, I know um the dark side half went through Animal Kingdom. I know that because I have a picture in front of the tree life. Yeah, that was a cool one too, though. The tree, I remember like coming up around everything for the 5k and like just seeing the tree of life like lit up. i almost cried. It was so cute. They were playing all those like story things that they play on the tree of life.
00:51:46
Speaker
I would also just like point out the shirt that I got for the Star Wars um race says in a corral far, far away. okay That's great. I love it.
00:51:59
Speaker
There's my picture with with the tree. The Animal Kingdom race, I dressed up as Scar. A different cat. Yeah, before I was a crazy corgi lady, I was a crazy cat lady.
00:52:12
Speaker
Run Disney had a lot of races in the past that I'm very sad I didn't get to do. Like, they did a Tower of Terror 10 miler. Yeah. Yes. I was just about to say that.
00:52:25
Speaker
like that y'all both had that. Tower Terror my favorite Disney attraction ever of all time.
00:52:35
Speaker
Interesting. Really? Yes.
00:52:40
Speaker
I just got this souvenir the last time I was there. oh cute. I thought you were about to pull out one of the Stitch Tower of Terror souvenirs. Can't get behind them.
00:52:54
Speaker
Weird. she hop or whatever Yeah, he's just like the... He's dressed as the bellhop. And like, I don't know. i just feel like it's such a weird combo. Yeah, that is a weird combo. No, we gotta keep Tower its own spooky...
00:53:10
Speaker
Not kitschy self. Yeah, like, there's so many better characters if you really wanted to put a character in it, but, like, Stitch feels weird to me. Can't get behind it. I i was gonna roast your merch if you came out with some so Stitch bellhop merch.
00:53:23
Speaker
na No, no, no, no, no. That would be the one thing if they tried to retheme Disney World's Tower of Terror. I would riot over any closure of any coaster. I would lose my ever-loving mind.
00:53:42
Speaker
Yeah. I would get really upset over Disney World's. But like Disneyland's I was totally okay with. I feel like the not randomized sweet sequence made that one like really not as scary. Yeah.
00:53:57
Speaker
So it's like, I feel like it's more fun to have it like more fun and upbeat vibes than like it just wouldn't, it doesn't translate well. Yeah. We need the superior.
00:54:10
Speaker
Superior. For sure. Set up.
00:54:15
Speaker
Randomized sequence. Yeah.
00:54:24
Speaker
the other one that they had that i never got to do this was the uh the everest challenge i don't know if y'all know much about that one i heard i remember hearing about it yeah i remember hearing about it but i don't know much about it uh nighttime 5k obstacle course and scavenger hunt all at animal kingdom fun Bring it back. I would love to do that.
00:54:51
Speaker
And I did want to do that so bad. And then they stopped. Okay, wait, Allison. yeah I have it on my calendar right now. Let me pull it up. Oh, no.
00:55:02
Speaker
And Jen, if you want, but June... june ah
00:55:12
Speaker
second June 2nd is the registration for the princess half next year. I'm going to try for it. I think we should do a girl's trip.
00:55:26
Speaker
I could be down.
00:55:31
Speaker
I will continue the peer pressure until June 2nd. Post about that in a discord too. See if we can get anybody else. Okay. would love to do a girl's trip.
00:55:42
Speaker
I could probably get down with that. I don't know if Joey will be here at that point, though. He can cheer us on. Spectate that bee. Okay. So he can come. He just can't ride. ride He just can't run. mean, he can run, but... i mean guys can run the princess. They do.
00:56:00
Speaker
Yeah, guys can run it. Steven ran it with me. But we could all be different princesses. I choose Anna. I'll be Elsa! What am I?
00:56:13
Speaker
Rapunzel? I do love Rapunzel. Anyways. We're planning now. I'll remind everyone as it gets closer. I will check in with Mike. My issue is actually doing registration is always in the middle of my workday and there's just times I can't get away from my desk.
00:56:32

I'm not organuffinized. Organuffinized. I'm not organuffinized. I'm not organized enough. Okay. to get that registration so someone else has to commit to getting it for me also i will be if somebody but if one person gets in you can register multiple people so like if we decide how whoever's gonna try for it and somebody gets in we can just boom boom boom have all the information ready to go yeah where would we what hotel would we stay at important questions i don't know
00:57:07
Speaker
I have DVC. True. So I can't house everyone, but I can probably house some people at a DVC. I'll sleep on a couch. I don't care. If we could get a um cabin at Fort Wilderness, there's like, those are kind of nice and they sleep a good amount of people.
00:57:26
Speaker
I'm down for any and all of these things. hold i'm a asshole. My pass was activated in March, so i be chillin'. I do not have that, but.
00:57:38
Speaker
I do have pass as well. Oh, my pass is. I need to. ah Yeah, we'll have to figure it out. Hey, Patreon. month
00:57:49
Speaker
No, I'm not going to do that. I
00:57:54
Speaker
wonder what Princess would be on it this year or next year. i don't think they'll announce it until. No, they don't. Yeah, because I think that's the start of the... Or wait, is that the start of the season or is Wine and Dine the start of the season?
00:58:10
Speaker
I think the full the marathon weekend in January is, technically. Oh, that's... So then they... Oh, yeah, okay. That registration already happened, but then Princess is... So then if that one's announced, then Princess should be announced too, no?
00:58:27
Speaker
Don't they announce them year by year? They announce all of them? Uh, Disney.
00:58:38
Speaker
Stand by. no, just get on with the whole, like. No, they only have it announced through full marathon weekend.
00:58:49
Speaker
Oh, okay. So maybe that's when the start. So, yeah, I think princess is the start of the race. Of the new season, yeah. Of the new season. Yeah. And I don't know if they still drop them. all at once but they used to drop past year it was february 26th to march 2nd yeah its half marathon was rapunzel themed too which means it's not going to be rapunzel next year i love rapunzel so do i oh and that's such a cool it was such a cool metal too
00:59:21
Speaker
yeah i do love my run disney medals yeah same um I think one of the recent ones had the Aristocats on it.
00:59:32
Speaker
They did not get my money this time. um marathon I think the Marathon Weekend medals this year were really cool. If I remember right.
00:59:45
Speaker
We are in a rabbit hole, y'all. yeah you know No, that's half the point of today's podcast. Oh no, this past week this past year was like storybook themed, which I was not a huge fan of those.
00:59:58
Speaker
The upcoming one is cute. It's like the partners. It's like Donald and Daisy and Mickey and Minnie. I'm pretty sure.
01:00:08
Speaker
One of the years they had like this cool like painted theme for the marathon ones. I can't find it now.
01:00:17
Speaker
24th?
01:00:21
Speaker
Who knows? I'm very distracted right now by medals. Once again, we'll run for medals.
01:00:34
Speaker
Yeah. I run to meet cats that I've never met.
01:00:39
Speaker
And then Kelly is just runs because she loves it. Yeah, I don't want to get too deep here, but like... Running for me, I didn't grow up a runner. Like I started running when I was in school in Florida and i feel like running was one of those things that was just like super unattainable to me. Like it just never came naturally. Like I couldn't run a mile. I would like die, like feeling like I couldn't breathe like half mile in. And then, you know, I, it's just one of those things that like,
01:01:12
Speaker
you can always feel like you're improving. Like you can always do better in some way. And it's just empowering to like, look back at where I was and where I've come. And I've definitely had breaks where there have been years I didn't run at all, but I've really been back to it for a little over a year now. And it is like the best part of my day in some ways is like getting a run in.
01:01:40
Speaker
I've always been like into running thanks to my dad because he used to run like he would do like three 5Ks in a weekend. That's awesome. um And then we had a big 10K in Atlanta every year on July 4th. And it's like one of the biggest in the world is 60,000 people or something like that. Wow, that's huge. Yeah. um And my dad did that for 20 years. My grandparents lived on the course at like mile two. So I would always stay at their place and cheer them on. That's cool. So I've always been around running.
01:02:08
Speaker
I've just never been good at it. But I ended up doing that the quote unquote good is like so nebulous in running. That's what's also really cool. It's like I follow a lot of professional runners and it's like these people are running five minute miles for a freaking marathon and I can't run one five minute mile.
01:02:31
Speaker
But it's like, for me, when I started running, i was running like 11 minute miles or or even slower. And now I run a lot faster than that. So it's like, i don't know, it's all kind of relative. And it's interesting, like, maybe I won't continue to get better at some point. I think age will catch up with me. But like, if I try to train hard, like I do get better.
01:02:51
Speaker
i still am getting faster, like training now. So it's really cool. Running is one of those things where Your success depends only on you and nobody else.
01:03:04
Speaker
Yep. You're in full control of how you how you do. Yeah. That was kind of my why for training this year that has kind of gone awry thanks to an injury. but That's okay. You'll come back. Yep.
01:03:20
Speaker
The goal is still maybe marathon next year. in End of the year, not in January. Yeah, I got to figure out my training plan. There's so many different like ways to go about it. And yeah, that's I'm really comfortable with training for the half marathon distance, but I've only ever done one full marathon and it was not trained well. And I ended up hurting myself during the race. That that was like over 10 years ago. And I've been afraid to try since.
01:03:47
Speaker
So Disney is re reinvigorating the interest, but I got to figure out how to do this right so I can actually do it and feel good about it
01:03:57
Speaker
Disney's a good way to go with it, too. It's a lot more... Not relaxed, but less stressful. It's happy and fun. you can't be but It's about the experience and just doing it.
01:04:09
Speaker
And I think that's why people love to run Disney races so much. Yeah. Because it's even if you're going out there for you know all the ah on-course entertainment, you're still going out there.
01:04:20
Speaker
And that's counts.
01:04:23
Speaker
Yeah. I do also talking about the Walt Disney World Marathon. I talk about this every single time. ah Are either of you in um run Disney groups on Facebook?
01:04:34
Speaker
no No. Okay. So there are a ton of run Disney groups on Facebook. And a lot of the times they have really good information. And I remember when i was ah low end someone was prepping for Walt Disney World Marathon, they shared a picture of the course and they were like,
01:04:49
Speaker
you know the water bridge by the contemporary that you go under so they were like i don't really understand this map can someone explain to me what is happening and there were like 300 comments of this person of all of these people trying to convince this person that this they're literally like this is the part of the marathon where you have to swim like there's like a 20 foot swimming area on the course and it's it was no one was being serious the whole entire post was telling this woman that she had to swim across the water. You could convince me that I, and I would do that, but like gators in Florida don't play.
01:05:27
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Well, this girl was full. I i mean, i would hope that she realized people were joking because people were saying it in joking ways. But it was the fact that there were like 300 comments and every single one decided to sarcastically mess with her instead of just telling her that there was. Because like, we don't have water bridges that much.
01:05:50
Speaker
like a lot here yeah i think they said there's like disney has like one of like seven in the united states or something it's some crazy number or wait they maybe they have three of ten or some weird number like that um so it's like it's not like we see them a ton oh my god it's just like my favorite thing the whole entire community just coming together to convince this woman she had to swim my god this poor woman wonder if she went with a bathing suit on ready to go I don't know. i wish that there was a follow-up post to it.
01:06:22
Speaker
i think about it often. Amazing.
01:06:30
Speaker
I do think maybe it's time to get in some into some listener questions. We got a lot of feedback.
01:06:38
Speaker
So we'll start with... um chris who was our guest last week so of course he had a lot to say about running at parks um he was a fantastic guest too i know you weren't there for that one jen i don't know if you listened to the episode at all but yeah i fly tomorrow so my plan is to hopefully listen to it on my flight um yeah i saved it i definitely want to listen give us some views listens whatever um yeah shout out to chris um
01:07:10
Speaker
who responded to this on the Patreon. So you get to go over his first. But he said, I have so many thoughts on this topic. Surprise. I really enjoy seeing parks outside of Disney do running events as they are great ways to get the community involved and attract new guests to the parks.
01:07:26
Speaker
Which is a good point. I wonder how many people have not been to Dollywood before that did the races at Dollywood. There were a ton of Run Disney people there. I don't know if you noticed. Oh, yeah. I heard i heard people talking. saw a ton of reels of war and Run Disney people that were doing it. Yeah.
01:07:43
Speaker
Tons. I wonder how many people were like comparing it to Run Disney. I'm sure sure a lot of them naturally were. Yeah. I feel like they probably were inspired a lot by Run Disney. like They probably looked to Run Disney to figure out how to organize things.
01:07:59
Speaker
Well, yeah, because I feel like they're definitely... Like, Dollywood's in this weird spot where it's, like, still not on Disney level, but, like, definitely the closest resort we're getting. Like, that and Silver Dollar City are, like, the closest we're getting to Universal and Disney outside of Universal and Disney. Agreed.
01:08:16
Speaker
So it's, like, yeah, I would imagine that they have to be looking at them for, like, they're not looking at King's Dominion. Or, like, they're just not looking at those parks when...
01:08:28
Speaker
they kind of are more on that level of Disney. yeah Yeah. I think it'll be really interesting to see if Silver Dollar City starts to have these races too. That will be hilly. AF.
01:08:41
Speaker
I've never been there. I don't know anything about it. Lost Island is getting into it now. Lost Island? Yeah. They have a Fire Runner 5K. Really? Is that the little park in Iowa that like is incredible but hard to get to? Yeah.
01:08:57
Speaker
That's what I thought. I always mix it up with what's What did you call it? it's What's the name of the park? lost island Lost Island. I always mix it up with Adventureland and I know that it's like terrible parks to mix up but I don't know. Lost Island and Adventureland in my mind just close. Yeah they're doing a Firerunner 5k on June 12th.
01:09:19
Speaker
Oh that's awesome. That's probably a really cool a event for them. and includes a Lost Island ticket too.
01:09:31
Speaker
That's how you get it. Yep. I also feel like that's going to help with their, like, I don't know if this is something they're truly concerned about, but everything I've heard from there is that the quality of the park compared to the attendance is really off. So I wonder if this is something that will help with their attendance. I really hope.
01:09:51
Speaker
I hope so. so that yeah Because I've just heard nothing but incredible things about that park. It was really cool. I enjoyed it. Very well done. Anyway, I know that's not what Chris was saying, but... That's where our tangents are. Off the rails!
01:10:06
Speaker
Going a little ah off-road here. um Run Disney events are very fun to do, but you've got to be committed to waking up extremely early, and if character stops at your thing, you'll be waiting a long time to get your PhotoPass picture.
01:10:20
Speaker
Or waiting multiple years in Jen's case. Yeah. Four years. 31 but but may I feel for the people that do the dopey challenge where it's like four 3am starts in a row.
01:10:36
Speaker
Yeah that would be rough. i'm ah I'm a morning person. I enjoy getting up early and working out but this is like another level. Yeah. I do not enjoy getting up and working out. I cannot go like straight from bed to the gym at all.
01:10:50
Speaker
I tried. I failed. I'm an evening runner. um Interesting. My legs just do not work if I don't have time to warm them up. And I'm always going running late for work. So I was always racing the clock.
01:11:05
Speaker
Yeah, I don't like running in the morning. Well, I don't run anymore. yes I don't even run in CrossFit anymore. It's like really bad. I'll show up to the gym and there'll be like a 200 meter run.
01:11:16
Speaker
And I'll be like, yeah like no i'm good i just don't run it's really bad that's terrible no one take after me but i don't know you're trying to encourage encourage people to run more i like running at events like that definitely because the vibes are there the vibes are high i'm just not a runner um but i do work like i can't work out in the morning it's not something i i don't sorry i'm a lifter guys i'm a lifter not a runner I will say i will give um Nate a shout out because after watching all the Dollywood running events over the weekend and then um listening to the episode with Chris on Monday, this guy hates running, like refuses, has ah adamantly told me he'll never run.
01:12:03
Speaker
He ran with me the other day. And he ran a good mile. Tell his mile. He did an 815 mile with zero training. He sprinted the whole time and he's like, there's no way I could do that for more than one mile.
01:12:15
Speaker
That was so impressive. He came on here the other day and said that and almost died. He said that he, I mean, he'll probably correct me on this whenever this drops on Monday.
01:12:26
Speaker
He said he actually kind of enjoyed it. And so now I'm trying to peer pressure him. Yes, everyone can run. You can enjoy it. um There's a 5k at the end of June that I'm looking at doing.
01:12:39
Speaker
So I'm trying to get him to do that with me. Nate, go to sign up for it. So I'll sign up for it. The medal's really cool.
01:12:50
Speaker
It's got the, like, museum center, you know, Hall of Justice building that Cincinnati has. That's on the medal. That's cool. It's very pretty. It's always good when you get um a medal from a 5K.
01:13:02
Speaker
I know. Yeah, a good 5K medal. That's more interesting. It's gorgeous 5K medal, like... Hold on, I'll pull it up real quick. This is not exciting for the people listening that aren't seeing this, but...
01:13:16
Speaker
leave that thing. That's cool. I want it. So I'm probably

Night Running Challenges and Disney Races

01:13:22
Speaker
to that. um Anyway, Chris said, something I wish parks did more was running events in the evening as an after hours event.
01:13:30
Speaker
Disney used to do the wine and dine half at night. Apparently, i know Jen has experience with this, with the after party in Epcot following the race. Night park runs leads to night rides and special events that would attract more than just runners and just theme park enthusiasts.
01:13:44
Speaker
Yeah, that's also part of the reason that I really like to wine and dine. Because you don't have to wake up at 2am? You still wake up, like, really early. Like, I do remember waking up really early still, but the after party was, like, a huge thing, too, because if you run the half marathon, it's included in your ticket.
01:14:05
Speaker
Yeah. Um... And it is kind of cool. However, by the time we made it to the after party, I was done. Like, completely fried. i don't even think we stayed the whole time. We like, think we got, there was like a special cup you could get and then we left.
01:14:23
Speaker
Priority. i I did not survive. I would be interested. I always think like I love running in the dark, like the beginning of the Dollywood race was in the dark, the first half of it. But my thing is I have a really sensitive stomach with running. So if I have a full day where I have to actually eat food and then run the race, I don't know if I'm going to do well. Like I pretty much eat dinner, go to bed, wake up, eat a cliff bar and run. And that's like the only way I can do it without feeling sick. So I'd have to i'd have to practice that.
01:14:53
Speaker
Oh, yeah. i So the Wine and Dine every year I did it was in the morning. So I didn't process. I thought he was just saying it was later, not at night. I forgot that it was at night. I think that I ran it for the first time like a year or two after they swapped it to the mornings. Okay.
01:15:10
Speaker
But now it's in the mornings. Yeah, and the Tower of Terror one was always at night too, I think. Yeah, I feel like the logistics just got too hard at night. Yeah. They swapped them to the morning. But the after party does still exist. It's the only run Disney race that has the after party, I think. That's cool.
01:15:28
Speaker
Yeah, except I feel like it was also kind of weird. Like, I feel like maybe when we got there, the food booths were in open or something. Like, there was also something weird that I was like, I'm far too tired to walk around this park.
01:15:38
Speaker
And this isn't happening. So... Yeah, I also don't recommend necessarily doing the half marathon and then walk around the park all day. Yeah, well, that's what I did. so fine It's a struggle.
01:15:51
Speaker
And then sit in the car her the entire next day. Yeah, no. Regrets. Could not move. um Chris's last thing said, overall, I've really enjoyed my three-run Disney races and I'm looking forward to next year's. He's also doing the marathon.
01:16:04
Speaker
Kelly. hi So there will be a few people we know. We'll definitely be trying to do Dollywood, Kings Dominion, and SeaWorld Orlando's races soon.
01:16:15
Speaker
who And we know he will. And he will be a beast and probably win them all. Yeah, I did not know. Like, he had talked to me and said told me that he liked running. But, like, that's as far as he got with it. I did not know, like, there's liking running and them being, like, winning marathons running. Like, I'm very impressed. Yeah, like, third overall male in one of the Disney half marathons.
01:16:43
Speaker
Yeah, Crazy.
01:16:47
Speaker
let's see. Alright. Brambo, who did the 10k with me. Well, not with me. He was miles ahead of me. But, you know. Signed up for my second park run this weekend with the BGW Food and Wine

Theme Park Running Experience

01:17:00
Speaker
5k. Oh, there's another food wine for you, Jen.
01:17:02
Speaker
One thing I like about these races is it gives a nice change in scenery compared to usual runs. You also oftentimes get to access back of house areas and get unique views at a ride you wouldn't otherwise get.
01:17:16
Speaker
It was cool going through Dollywood. Like, ah you know, it's kind of through the past that you normally do, but. I was very over it at that point. and I wish I enjoyed it more.
01:17:27
Speaker
i got to see the water park. Yeah, the water park was really pretty. It was like lit up nice for us. Yeah. I don't remember anything about it except for the hill at the end, but. Yeah, there was a hill.
01:17:37
Speaker
Did you have that same part of your course where it went to the resort? Yeah. Where you go down the hill and then you're like, oh, you got to go back up that, huh? Yeah. Yeah. Yep, sure did. Yeah.
01:17:48
Speaker
That does not sound fun. I'm curious about what the ah route for the BGW one is. If that goes through the parks. Because depending on where the course goes, that could suck. Yeah, that could be hilly too. i feel like a lot of theme parks are hilly.
01:18:03
Speaker
The more I think about it. Yeah. Didn't Universal do one too? Yeah, they did. Oh, they should do a spooky HHN one. I would be all for that.
01:18:16
Speaker
That sounds like it would be really fun. Chris sent me. Oh, wait, this thing is. Are they doing another one this year? It's not that I'm aware of.
01:18:28
Speaker
This article that I'm reading was posted in. Hello. Mid 2025.
01:18:39
Speaker
Maybe a course from 2020. Yeah, it looks like 2020 is the last one. Where it goes, like... It's, like, mostly in the park and CityWalk.
01:18:52
Speaker
Yeah, that's a cool 5K. Yeah, this whole... This map is literally through all of iowa then CityWalk, then back behind iway into...
01:19:08
Speaker
The entirety of IOA. Yeah, that's kind of crazy. it is And they're like looping you around in the parks. So you're seeing everything.
01:19:18
Speaker
Yeah.
01:19:21
Speaker
Man, that would have been a cool one.
01:19:24
Speaker
Bring it back, Universal. This one seems really cool. Could you imagine getting to do off to a race at Epic? Oh my gosh. We kind of talked about that last episode too.
01:19:38
Speaker
More races at parks. Yes. I hope that like Dollywood is successful enough that other parks will kind of see it and start doing things too. Yeah. Hope so.
01:19:51
Speaker
Let's see. Hello Coaster said I did a half marathon back in 2015 at Disneyland. It was so surreal running through the Disney parks off hours. The only thing about the Disneyland ones is there's a lot of stuff on just the main roads there.
01:20:02
Speaker
Yeah.
01:20:04
Speaker
Yeah. The park is so condensed there. It's like hard to keep it all. Yeah.
01:20:14
Speaker
So you run through a lot of Anaheim. It's not as magical, so to speak. ah Nate's response was, i asked like what experiences people have. He just said my 815 mile that kicked my butt with you this week.
01:20:27
Speaker
That was his only contribution. I mean, run with me more Nate. Oh, We already talked about that because it was still wildly impressive. Yeah. Show said did one at Six Flags. I assume this is Great America. a couple years back based on DC Heroes was neat to get to run backstage.
01:20:50
Speaker
I think that is kind of like just the best part of. Yeah. As a nerd, that's for sure the best part. Getting to see some of those backstage areas that you don't always have access to. Definitely. Definitely.
01:21:02
Speaker
And then there was me just like filming by going all the coast filming while going by all the coasters that weren't even running. Just because I'm a nerd. You have to. today
01:21:17
Speaker
um Next we have Solar Coaster. I would love to do Dollywoods. I've done the Pride 5K, the Bradstreet 10 mile run, and the Rothman 8K.
01:21:28
Speaker
I assume those are all just like local races. Yeah. But yeah, there should be plenty of opportunity to do Dollywoods. Yeah. It sounds like it went really good for them, so I'd imagine it would be back.
01:21:44
Speaker
Yeah. Keith kind of tagged along on that. Dollywood event was great. i would love to see Cedar Point bring it back. They did a race series pre-COVID, which I don't know if I know about that. That would be fun.
01:21:56
Speaker
That'd be a good one. They have the land for it. Yeah. yeah Run up and down the causeway. That'd be brutal. Could be. Could be pretty brutal. pretty, but it would be brutal. who
01:22:12
Speaker
Yeah, not... i don't know. Could you imagine like a really windy day too? I feel like it would be... Running against the wind. and But it is pretty flat up there.
01:22:24
Speaker
Yeah, that's true. I will say, so I'm signed up for this like virtual race challenge where all of my miles on Strava count towards um this

Virtual Race Challenges and Medals

01:22:35
Speaker
challenge. And it's like 240 miles or something like that. And they have a it's a Great Lakes series. So they have actually like five different events, each themed to the different Great Lakes.
01:22:44
Speaker
And it just so happened that one of them has Cedar Point on the medal. So I signed up for for like 20 bucks. So it's, you know, accumulating all of my miles. I think I'm at like 140 so far or something.
01:22:57
Speaker
um Maybe less than that. um And I've told myself I'm not putting this metal on until I hit that goal. But it's a really cool metal. It has like the skyline on it.
01:23:09
Speaker
That's awesome. Oh, I like that. I'm going to grab it real quick. Well, if Jen, you want to start reading Anne's novel. Yeah, we got a good one from Anne. And for um any of you guys who haven't listened to the episode with Anne, Anne is from the Netherlands. So we're going to get um some Europe based comments for Anne's comments.
01:23:32
Speaker
um So she said, i did a run at wallaby holland and what made that one good was that it was a relaxed run good for me because i'm not a runner you got a whole day at the park prior to the run and you got to ride three roller coasters during the run the route could have been better though the three roller coasters were all in the first kiilometer of five and the rest of the route was mainly outside the park for me it was for funzies i did train a bit um because i'm not a runner at all but not much um She then continues to say, Wellby Belgium also did one this year, and that was before season opening. So there was no perk of a day in the park. Only their newest area was open afterwards. um It was a proper run run, though. A run with a price for being the fastest. I don't know where they ran through, though.
01:24:24
Speaker
And then her last comment is, The rollercoaster run in Wallaby is hosted by a charity against cat cancer. So we had to raise money in order to join the run, but there was no lowest limit. So it was quite a low threshold to join. I know the charity of Efteling that gives children without means a free holiday hosts a yearly charity run too, but they don't enter the theme park, only the Chalet Park and the surrounding nature.
01:24:53
Speaker
Interesting. would love to run through the Wallaby parks. They're both pretty.
01:24:59

Yeah, I don't and don know. I don't know. I'll know about Wallaby Holland soon. yeah Well, imagine running a race through Wallaby Holland. I didn't know Efteling does one. Even like through, i ah i would assume that the nature areas are like the areas that have their little like um hotels that have like the little huts and stuff.
01:25:22
Speaker
That would be cool. Loonchaland. What is it? think it's like Loonchaland. I don't know. i don't know. and I'm staying there at Efteling's on property this summer.
01:25:36
Speaker
i I didn't know about this. I really want to stay on property and me and me and Joey talk about it all the time, but we both get a free Efteling ticket.
01:25:47
Speaker
Yeah, there's no point then. With our Europa Park passes. And we're like, we cannot justify it when we have a free ticket. Yeah, we're just doing it for like the ticket package and the early entry. Yeah, when you have a ticket, like when you don't have a ticket and it's included, it's so worth it. Yeah, it's like really not expensive at all.
01:26:04
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Unfortunately, we have a free ticket with our Europa Park passes. One day I'll get to F the link.
01:26:17
Speaker
Soon. I need to talk about Efteling on this podcast like yesterday. Awesome. Here's the ah cute. oh that is cool.
01:26:27
Speaker
And like size my hand for reference. Like this thing is gigantic. Yeah. It's a pretty good one. Yeah. So yes, I did get it just because had roller coasters on it.
01:26:39
Speaker
Yeah. And was a good motivator to try to put all my training miles towards it Yeah. Um, I like skimmed over and comment, but, um, getting to ride through roller coasters during your run is kind of sick.
01:26:56
Speaker
I don't know if I do it or not. Like, it'd be cool to run to ride a coaster during a run, but also like, I think Kelly, you said earlier, just like fear of just locking up completely. Yeah. Yeah. I used to have such a hard time with like even walking during a like a long run. Like I would walk through a water station and then have a really hard time getting going again. I'm better at it now because I practice it. And like I had to as part of my rehab do a lot of walk runs. But like I can't imagine sitting my butt anywhere then getting up and trying to complete the run. Like it's just not going to happen for me. Even for a 5K?
01:27:33
Speaker
o i don't know. I run a 5K pretty hard. Yeah.
01:27:38
Speaker
I'm too competitive. my gosh. At the Walt Disney World Marathon, you can ride Everest. And I will not because I can also just take my annual pass and go in ride Everest. Yeah. But then you didn't do it during a marathon. i know but I won't get back up. Literally it happened to Keith. He rode big bear mountain and he said on the second launch, his legs went into a cramp and he was just like,
01:28:07
Speaker
Oh my God, that's terrible.
01:28:11
Speaker
I always thought it'd funny to like look at Strava maps like while you're on the coaster. Yeah. You're running issue. That's part of your map. but and Strava, you have your fastest split yet.
01:28:23
Speaker
Yeah. I ran 50 miles an hour for a couple seconds. Yeah. You've ran your fastest mile.
01:28:37
Speaker
Jen's playing on things on her phone. So I think that means we're about done. Yeah, i sorry, I did open something on my phone. i'm really excited. My Epic Film Soup is popping off a little bit. For my 300 follower account,
01:28:54
Speaker
it's popping off a little bit. I'm very excited. Yeah, Jen's going viral. Especially because that film Soup, guys, I made a mistake and that film Soup cost me like over $50 develop. Oh, man.
01:29:07
Speaker
oh man Usually it costs me like 30, which is already like way more than because you have to find a specialized lab. It costs me over $50 to develop the soup, not including the stuff like I bought to make the soup at Epic.
01:29:22
Speaker
um So I was like really hoping that this I was like, I hope people really like this. And I'm excited to share my results because if not, I'm going to cry because I spent over $50 to develop this film.

Creative Projects and Future Episodes

01:29:37
Speaker
The results are really cool. Yeah, I'm very excited. It also... The thing with Film Soup is that like there's always the chance that I did all this work and then it comes back and it's destroyed.
01:29:47
Speaker
And I can salvage nothing. Yeah. So I was also like... There's a chance I just spent over $50 to salvage absolutely nothing. a God.
01:29:58
Speaker
So, um yeah. So I just... I got distracted. i got a notification. I also didn't turn the notifications off on the post because I didn't really expect it to pop off. Like, i kind of wanted it to, like, I hoped it would pop off, but it didn't, like, I wasn't expecting it, so I left it with the notifications on, so my phone is going crazy.
01:30:27
Speaker
But yeah.
01:30:30
Speaker
I think that brings out you're just waiting for me to say yeah with to i guess that brings us to the end of the episode. Yeah. Kelly looks like she's fading. So yeah, I have to wake up at um three o'clock in the morning. that is me. I have an early appointment tomorrow.
01:30:50
Speaker
i'm back at sports medicine to check on my hip and I'm going to say, i just ran out of my hip. I think I'm good. Knock on wood.
01:31:00

Happy to be it. Happy to be here. Well, hopefully people will go out and run, go sign up for a run Disney race if you can, or at least do it. Or just like go outside and run a half a mile and you can do it slowly and see how it feels. Feels great when you do it.
01:32:02
Speaker
That's a hundred percent what I told Nate, like just do a mile. If you hate it, then you ran a mile. If you didn't hate it, then you can run more miles. That's pretty much how it went. But yeah.
01:32:12
Speaker
Yeah. and go out there, be active. Enjoy nature or a treadmill. Up to you um and hashtag keep thinking inverted and we'll see you next time when I'm married.
01:32:28
