Cokeley Brothers: Welcome back to the Barn Session, everybody. We have to recap NCAAs. So that is what we are going to do.
Reese: Thanks.
Cokeley Brothers: We've given ourselves a week to really digest what happened up in Cleveland, to really s think about the matches and the action and the impact.
Cokeley Brothers: And that's why you know we're so late to recap NCAAs, because we really needed to think about what it all meant. So...
Cokeley Brothers: And Reese needed an apple. So, ah yeah, let's let's talk about nationals.
Reese: Yep, I needed an apple.
Cokeley Brothers: Let's talk about the action. Where do you even want to start? You just want to go weight by weight. Do you want to talk about the finals first? Where do you want to go, Reese? Where do you want to go?
Reese: Um, I don't know, man. It was kind of a... It was a while ago now. ah Um, let's just go weight by weight.
Cokeley Brothers: Oh, my goodness.
Cokeley Brothers: Yeah, you're kind of right.
Reese: Oh, God, remember you.
Cokeley Brothers: Yeah, let's go weight by weight. I've got the bracket pulled up here. ah Penn State champ Luke Lilladol goes twenty five and o on the season, undefeated.
Cokeley Brothers: Wins just a very boring finals match against Mark Anthony McGowan, which is not really Luke Lilladol's fault. ah Yeah.
Cokeley Brothers: Can I say... I was kind of right about this weight. Kind of.
Reese: What did you say?
Cokeley Brothers: Well, what I really noticed is like, cause I was kind of paying attention to what people would predict and what like some people even would go and put their like round of 12 finishers out there and all that stuff. Uh, not many people had Jacob Moran and in their like top 12.
Cokeley Brothers: And I was right.
Reese: Yeah.
Cokeley Brothers: He placed sixth. He made the semis. He beat Nick Bousakis. He beat Jory Volk. He fell to Mark Anthony McGowan and then slid right on down to sixth. And you know what? We take those.
Reese: Not a lot of people would predicted that outside of Indiana fans, which is what category you fall into.
Cokeley Brothers: Right.
Cokeley Brothers: Yeah. ah
Reese: Indiana fan.
Cokeley Brothers: I'd like to think I'm more than just a fan. I'd like to think I'm like the loudest voice that they have.
Reese: What are you?
Cokeley Brothers: He's me. He mutes himself when he eats an apple. He's really smart now about it. For those of you that have viscerally complained about his eating sounds while recording. um Yeah. Luke Lilladol really, I want kind of i do want to say this cause I thought about it the other day.
Cokeley Brothers: ah he if you watch Luke's matches but for pretty much the entire season, It always felt like as soon as he got in on a shot or as soon as he took an attack or was countering his opponent and was in a scoring position, he just kind of stayed composed until he gets the takedown. He didn't really feel like he overextended or reached or really strained himself to get the score and just kind of stayed ready until...
Cokeley Brothers: He was waiting for them to dive roll or to overreact from a swing single position, whatever it was, kind of just stayed in good position and then eventually scored his takedown.
Cokeley Brothers: ah Which maybe is boring, but.
Reese: Yeah, he's good from everywhere.
Cokeley Brothers: Yeah, he it didn't it ever felt like he was really in danger of losing any of his matches, even though it was he had a 4-2 match against Strickenberger, 2-1 against Dean Peterson and 2-1 against Mark Anthony McGowan. It just didn't ever really feel like he was going to lose any of those matches. So.
Cokeley Brothers: Solid stuff.
Reese: Hopefully somebody can come in and challenge him at some point.
Cokeley Brothers: Like.
Cokeley Brothers: Yeah.
Reese: I didn't really expect him to kind of separate himself like this.
Cokeley Brothers: Yeah.
Reese: um
Cokeley Brothers: Mm hmm.
Reese: At least not at this point. I don't know
Cokeley Brothers: Right. It's, it's super interesting to think about the fact that his only loss was his teammate.

Cokeley Brothers: And it's, you might, you might ask yourself, man, if Nate Desmond wasn't at Penn state, would he have been in the finals? Maybe, maybe not. maybe I don't even know if he would have been at one 25 for a different team.
Reese: Yeah. Yeah.
Cokeley Brothers: I don't know. So, uh, that was interesting to think about. And, What else about this weight?
Cokeley Brothers: ah Troy Spratly, I felt like was the guy who went out there and really tried to like take it to to Luke Lilladol. And we saw how that panned out. It didn't work.
Cokeley Brothers: It, you know, Lilladol had all the answers and, and it just, it was not the way to approach a match like that.
Reese: Yeah.
Cokeley Brothers: So you can't try and, and break things open.
Reese: Well, yeah. not you can't You can't approach a match like that when you're that, oh you're you're that ah you know,
Cokeley Brothers: You can't. Yeah.
Reese: you're just outmatched. You're outmanned, outgunned.
Cokeley Brothers: Yeah. Yeah.
Reese: Like, if maybe if if maybe if it's somebody else, you know, who's on that level, maybe...
Cokeley Brothers: Right.
Reese: But I don't know if there is anybody.
Cokeley Brothers: Right.
Reese: I mean, this is a guy who...

Reese: He's got wins, like multiple wins over Jax Forrest. um
Cokeley Brothers: Mm
Reese: He's beaten Bo Bassett. He's beaten pretty much everybody. Any any and everybody he's... Has he ever wrestled Marcus Blaze?
Cokeley Brothers: <unk>t know if he's ever wrestled Blazed. Did he beat Bo Bassett? I know he's lost to Bo. I don't know if he's beaten him.
Reese: I think he's beaten him before, yeah.
Cokeley Brothers: Okay.
Reese: I believe they've gone back and forth.
Cokeley Brothers: Okay. Oh, yeah. ah Dude, I do wish that we could have seen like
Cokeley Brothers: Honestly, the old Lillard only wrestled two all Americans and he beat them Spratly and McGowan, but like, it would have been interesting to see him go out there and wrestle Nico Provo or a, a Vince Robinson.
Reese: Provo would have been interesting, yeah.
Cokeley Brothers: Yeah, I think he went ham on the back.
Reese: Provo, he went ham on the backside.
Cokeley Brothers: So he he lost him a going in the second round, four to two, and then stepped up on the backside and, Yeah, major decision, decision, major, decision, major. like Just kind of hammered his way through that backside.
Cokeley Brothers: ah
Reese: That'll be interesting. What if he's a sophomore or a junior?
Cokeley Brothers: Provo, I believe, should be just a sophomore because he was a freshman two years ago, medically redshirted last year. It says Richard junior on Russell staff, but I think that's because they didn't apply the med shirt.
Cokeley Brothers: Let me confirm. Or did he just flat out rich? No, he it was a flat red shirt. Okay. 2023 freshman, 24 sophomore. Last year was a red shirt. This year he's a junior.
Cokeley Brothers: Okay. So he's got one more year.
Reese: Hmm.
Cokeley Brothers: Interesting. I don't remember him in 2023 at all.
Reese: Feels like he's been around for a while.
Cokeley Brothers: Yeah. Well, I remember him in 2024. He won CKLV and he was ranked number one. And then I think like the next weekend.
Reese: Yeah, I thought he was a freshman that year.
Cokeley Brothers: yeah i thought that i thought that Yeah, I thought that was his freshman year because he he wins the CKLV and then the next week or two weeks after that, Stanford wrestles Virginia Tech and he loses to Cooper Flynn 5-2.
Cokeley Brothers: Tyler
Reese: I thought both him and Knox were freshmen, but I guess not.
Cokeley Brothers: um
Cokeley Brothers: tyler knox
Reese: No, that year. Because Knox redshirted the next year and now he's a sophomore.
Reese: Right?
Cokeley Brothers: Interesting.
Reese: Or no, no. No, he was in the tournament last year. So hes he was a junior this year.
Cokeley Brothers: Yeah, Knox was in AA last year. So really, i thought Knox was going to end up starting in 2024, but Dom LaJoy ended up being the starter.
Reese: Or did he redshirt in...
Reese: That's right.
Cokeley Brothers: Then he was an All-American last year at eighth, and then an All-American this year at sixth, which really him taking sixth at 133 is kind of impressive.
Reese: Did he, uh, so is he a junior to or is he a sophomore?
Cokeley Brothers: He's a sophomore.
Reese: Okay.
Cokeley Brothers: Yeah. ah Some round of 12 guys or just some guys on the backside who like I'm surprised to see where they fell.
Cokeley Brothers: um Two Big Ten guys, Dean Peterson and Nick Buzakis, both lose to Tyler Klinski of Ryder. Good performance for Klinski. um Suck to see Buzakis' season end that way.
Cokeley Brothers: um it sucked to see Dean Peterson never get on the podium, but That's the sport, man. That's the sport.
Reese: Yeah.
Reese: Yeah, I don't know.
Cokeley Brothers: Yeah.
Reese: Bousakis, I feel bad for. Peterson, I don't know.
Cokeley Brothers: Not so much.
Reese: Not as much.
Cokeley Brothers: Okay. That's fair. All right. Any other 125 thoughts? Okay. Okay.
Reese: Well, Mark Anthony McGowan, was he sophomore this year?
Cokeley Brothers: i believe so. There was like questions about whether he would actually start to wrestle in in college. ah Like I think in the middle of the season last year.
Cokeley Brothers: ah Let me double check that he is. Yeah, he's a sophomore. He did a gray shirt year, I think in 2024. Or yeah I think so at the New Jersey RTC.
Cokeley Brothers: think he was class of 2023, like number one, I think. Qualified last year, took second this year. princeton Princeton can put out some lightweights, so we'll see if ah we'll see if he can continue to be an elite guy at 125.
Cokeley Brothers: His style is not great.
Reese: He's big, bro. I don't think he's i don't think he's staying at 25. I don't know.
Cokeley Brothers: Yeah, and if he goes 33, it's going to get a lot uglier for him.
Reese: I mean, he looked huge to me. You
Cokeley Brothers: Or it gets a lot better.

Cokeley Brothers: I would love to see.

Cokeley Brothers: Yes. Imagine he grows into 133 and then becomes this at least more of an offensive juggernaut. And then you have, you have to Vino, maybe blaze side L maybe forest. I don't know. I could see blazing and forest both bumping up. As a matter of fact, let's get to that weight. Now, 133 Jack's forest hops into the middle of the season.
Cokeley Brothers: destroys the competition. Uh, his only close match, uh, matches of the year are Aaron Seidel, who he later majors in the semis at nationals. And then in the finals, uh, against Ben DeVino wins five to two,
Cokeley Brothers: the kids, a hammer, uh, i I need to say that I'm wrong fully 100% because I said earlier in the season, I don't think that this is a good idea and that I i don't think it's worth it.
Cokeley Brothers: Oklahoma state finished second as a team. Jack's forest won and a national title and people are talking about him being Hodge, a Hodge contender, which maybe probably probably not. um Yeah, that he's the real deal.
Reese: He is.
Cokeley Brothers: He's the real deal now.
Reese: I mean, I was wrong too. I thought Blaze would figure out a way to beat DeVino. And then I really, you know, i felt like Blaze would maybe be the one guy who could, I mean, he has been before the one guy to beat jacks um but marcus he couldn't beat devino hell lost five to zero to a dude who i'm pretty sure the last time they wrestled he tagged him in freestyle so it's it's interesting sad boy hours and
Cokeley Brothers: Yeah.
Cokeley Brothers: Oh yeah. Yeah. But I think that advantage, I mean, we, we saw it happen. Seidel got on top. Yeah. But also Seidel got on top and that's the difference between folks on freestyle. Right.
Reese: took him down
Cokeley Brothers: Yes. Yes. So maybe some sad boy hours. I don't know. You know what? you know what I think? I think Marcus blazes is not long for 33. I,
Reese: He didn't, I don't know, well whatever it is, whether he's too big or, um you know, he just, I don't know, whatever it is, he needs to figure something out because, I don't know, man, he just, ah I wasn't expecting him to get, like, i mean, that side down match, you know, maybe it is just third place.
Cokeley Brothers: I think he makes his way up.
Cokeley Brothers: Hmm.
Reese: He didn't really care as much, but, like, to get kind of outplayed like that,
Cokeley Brothers: Yeah, I mean, Seidel looked really good.
Reese: Oh, no, man. You shouldn't. Sidell did look really good. Sidell is really, really, really good. And the Hokies. Got be happy. Got be happy if you're a Hokie.
Cokeley Brothers: Right, right.
Reese: But, yeah, Blaze, don't know.
Cokeley Brothers: Yeah.
Reese: I don't know. Maybe figure some things out with your offense specifically.
Cokeley Brothers: Maybe.

Cokeley Brothers: Maybe, but yeah, I have some thoughts about that. I do think like if blaze, I think putting blaze, keeping him at 133 pounds next year for Penn state is the wrong choice. I think if they are going if they are considering blaze, Oh no 33, 41, that they should do.
Cokeley Brothers: Oh no 33 blaze 41, just to see if it changes something for Marcus blaze. Cause I don't, Unless they they have a different answer, like a different solution for changing Blaze's performance.
Cokeley Brothers: um He's got the frame to be a 41-pounder. Now, does he do against Stanich and Vega? i don't know. I don't know.
Reese: Well, I think, I mean, he's beaten Vega before.
Cokeley Brothers: And like for...
Reese: beat Vega a little over a year ago in folk style.
Cokeley Brothers: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Reese: don't know. I think he'd be fine. don't think it would be a different challenge. I think it'd be similar challenge. And I think, honestly, at this point, I think Divino is better. think Divino's...
Reese: I don't know. Vega's not going to be a 41, first off. I don't think. is what i From what I'm gathering, sounds like he's going up. going up He can't make 41 anymore.
Cokeley Brothers: So do you think we're going see a double bump?
Reese: Jax and Vega? Maybe, yeah.
Cokeley Brothers: Yeah. I don't know. I heard that Forrest is going to be wrestling 61 kilograms this summer, which might just mean that he's sticking around at 133.
Reese: Jax could stay a 33. didn't hear... I mean, yeah. But, but the yeah, Vega, the word is, he's big.
Cokeley Brothers: Maybe.
Reese: He's big, big, big boy.
Cokeley Brothers: No.
Reese: So, he's, yeah, he's SOL.
Cokeley Brothers: So what does that do? What happens to Casey?
Reese: He's, figure something out, yeah.
Cokeley Brothers: He's out.
Cokeley Brothers: Yeah.
Reese: Because RobbyDew doesn't really look big enough to go 65.
Cokeley Brothers: No. And then you got Ladarian Lockett.
Cokeley Brothers: Now, I am hearing that there's a chance that Lockett red shirts and they bring in they try and bring in somebody from the portal for one year 165.
Reese: Really?
Cokeley Brothers: Like if we see ah one thing, like a potential thing I could see is like, uh, no, I don't know. Like, I don't know if this was a discussion that people had. This was just like an idea that was thrown out there.
Cokeley Brothers: Um, in terms of Ladarian redshirting and in terms of a guy that could maybe be in the portal, which is Joey blaze. If he's unhappy with the way things are looking at Purdue, going from being a finalist to taking sixth kind of, of his own choice.
Cokeley Brothers: Um, Maybe he's unhappy. I don't know. He could to be totally happy at Purdue and say that this is my home and I'm staying. So I don't know. But we'll find that out.
Reese: You think he probably graduated, right?
Cokeley Brothers: No, he's he's a true junior. Yeah. The Blaze brothers do not believe in red shirts. We will find out. We will start to hear portal news very shortly. April 1st is the first day and it is one probably one of the dumbest choices of days. like Why not make it the 2nd or the 31st of March? like April 1st is really the first day that they're going to start letting people announce that they're entering the transfer portal?
Cokeley Brothers: Really? what are we how are we gonna so How are we supposed to believe what's what's true and what's not, Reese?
Reese: Well, you're just going have to take a leap of faith, as they say.

Cokeley Brothers: A surprise, some surprises on the backside, because this weight finished out. Forrest Devino, which i am i have I have high expectations for Devino moving forward. Seidel, Blaze, ah Drake Ayala, Tyler Knox, fifth and sixth, and then Van D taking seventh over Lucas Bird, who finished in eighth, went from first to eighth.
Cokeley Brothers: ah Some guys who didn't place, or at least one, Larkin. Larkin not placing, That kind of surprised me. it Jacob Vandy. Okay.
Cokeley Brothers: Vandy loses round one to Julian Farber from Northern Iowa. Loses to him five to four. The 13 seed loses to the 20 seed, which I actually think i I had marked down because I thought Vandy had a concussion. I didn't really think he was going to like really wrestle.
Cokeley Brothers: Wins wins by the skin of his teeth, 10 to seven over, over Willis shell. And then just four to two over Walker, 12 to one over Grice, two to one over Markel Baker to place. And then he beats Lucas bird for seventh place.
Cokeley Brothers: Stellar performance from the corn Husker. ah they're continuing to get some solid performances out of him in the post season. Um,
Cokeley Brothers: Yeah, and that's kind of it, honestly. like Farber losing in the blood round, I'm not shocked by. Markel Baker, i kind of like I thought Baker would have beaten Van D in the blood round when I saw that matchup.
Cokeley Brothers: Just because Baker... like No, you're shaking your head.
Cokeley Brothers: ah You're muted still. That's okay.
Reese: Sorry.
Cokeley Brothers: That's okay.
Reese: um ah Well, you know, I said Vandy, classic Vandy, vintage Vandy, backside, you know, warrior.
Cokeley Brothers: I don't know.
Reese: But no, Markel, I don't know.
Cokeley Brothers: Mm-hmm. Yeah.
Reese: as what What makes you think Markel Baker is better than Vandy?
Cokeley Brothers: Didn't he... I guess it was a sudden victory went over Serrano. I don't know. I don't know. Maybe that was a really dumb choice and in thought.
Cokeley Brothers: So... Yeah, this will be an interesting way to keep an eye on moving into the future.

I don't even know how... like You're Ben DeVino. you've been You've been working your ass off all year long to to win this title. You hear about this guy that comes in in the middle of the season and you say, it doesn't matter. plans the The goal remains the same.
Cokeley Brothers: You make finals. You make it to the finals. you've, you've beat, you've battled and you've, you've beaten all the tests that have come in front of you, even avenging a loss twice. And first match of finals, you watch your, your team captain and the, probably your, your training partner,

Cokeley Brothers: ah take you know, lose to this true freshman, Sergio Vega, who didn't give up any takedowns all year. And now you've got to wrestle that guy's teammate and you lose a one takedown match.
Cokeley Brothers: I saw a picture of Divino after afterwards in the hallway, face face in his hands. And just, I can't imagine that he's the type of guy to do anything, but just kind of take it, take it up another notch in terms of training and, and,
Cokeley Brothers: Elevating his game to be even more.
Reese: Yeah, it seems like him and Mendez have a good thing going.
Cokeley Brothers: Prepped and ready for next year.
Reese: Hopefully Mendez sticks around.
Cokeley Brothers: Yeah.
Cokeley Brothers: Hopefully. Hopefully I'm excited.

Reese: He looks big too. Sidell looks big.
Cokeley Brothers: Yeah. Yeah, I don't know.

Reese: He is short. But what when he was like a 41 or 49, think.

Cokeley Brothers: think so. He's definitely ah muscled wide, for sure.

Cokeley Brothers: All right. 141. The weight of surprises, or at least a weight with surprises. Namely, in the finals, Sergio Vega completes the completes a full season of just not giving up any takedowns.
Cokeley Brothers: As a true freshman, beating you know the the one of the Hodge favorites prior to the final session of NCAAs, Jesse Mendez, two-time national champ.
Cokeley Brothers: And what can you even say, man? What can you even say?
Reese: I was shocked.
Cokeley Brothers: Except how does he do it? Yeah.
Reese: I don't know. The flow guys were like, oh, not surprised.
Cokeley Brothers: Now.
Reese: Figured it was not going to happen coming in like to the tournament or whatever. I didn't see coming. I don't know.
Cokeley Brothers: I know, like.
Reese: I was shocked. I figured they go or Mendez would just find a way to double off you know, do something, man, figure something out.
Cokeley Brothers: Yeah.
Reese: He's been there so many times.
Cokeley Brothers: I don't know. I was nervous. i was nervous I was nervous and like seeing how Stanich was able to kind of limit Mendez. I was like, okay, that makes me a little nervous too, but it's def, it's a diff, totally different body style. So maybe, you know, you put that into play and and it's a different situation, but i don't know.
Cokeley Brothers: And, It just, it felt, it feels like if you have Mendez wrestle him a couple more times that he starts to get some wins over him and he starts to get something figured out, it just feels like Vega is a little bit of a puzzle that if you give somebody some some some shots on him, they're going to figure it out.
Cokeley Brothers: Like, I do feel as if a Bo Bassett would be a guy who solves Sergio Vega a match or two.
Reese: You know what? I lied. i don't think Blaze wrestled Vega last year.
Cokeley Brothers: Hmm.
Reese: made that up. He was supposed to in the Ironman.
Cokeley Brothers: Okay.
Reese: And then he lost to Mendoza. Vega did. So I like to retract that.
Cokeley Brothers: Vega did.
Reese: Yeah. Remember Mendoza lost to Blaze.
Cokeley Brothers: Interesting. And now they're all at different weights.
Reese: Yep. For now.
Cokeley Brothers: Crazy.
Reese: For now.
Cokeley Brothers: For now, maybe maybe moving forward. Mendoza really looks like he could be a serious 57-pounder.
Reese: yeah Is he not gonna go 49 next year?
Cokeley Brothers: I don't know. Like, like he could be 49 and vegaga Vega could be 49, but at Vega could be 49 and Mendoza might be 57. I don't know.
Reese: Don't hope he goes 49. I don't know unless he gets a lot bigger. I mean he'll probably get bigger eventually
Cokeley Brothers: Hey, I, it looked like, it looked like he had the frame to do it.
Reese: Yeah, but he did not have the muscles
Cokeley Brothers: Got them long, long limbs. Right. That comes with time and weights. um Luke Stanich kind of showed out, took third place, looked good doing it.
Reese: Okay.
Cokeley Brothers: um Brock Hardy finishes a solid career in fourth some guys that surprised me in terms of not placing ah
Cokeley Brothers: three namely and that is Vance Von Bar Nasir Bailey and Vince Cornella Vince Cornella loses to Carter Noggle of Air Force who's that who's that
Reese: I don't know, dude.
Cokeley Brothers: I never heard of him. And he ends up taking fifth.
Reese: Took fifth place, though.
Cokeley Brothers: Took fifth place.
Reese: Yeah.
Cokeley Brothers: Wyatt Henson, a guy who over the last previous two seasons comes into NCAA's ranked or seeded pretty high because he doesn't really have much of a season because Lock Haven's schedule isn't anything notable.
Cokeley Brothers: ah Comes in, out think, like the 13th seed, but then just just buckles up and gets the job done against Nasir Bailey. Yeah, I don't know, man. And CJ Composto, a guy that Vince Cornella beat three times, four times?
Cokeley Brothers: Four times this year, I think? Southern Scuffle, Penn Duel, Ivy Leagues, NCAAs, and then Composto places, Cornella doesn't.
Reese: I mean, what can you say about Compasso other than Mr.
Cokeley Brothers: Ouch. Which...
Reese: March? mr march
Cokeley Brothers: He's Mr. March. I guess. And Cornell is not when there's a there's a whole overarching like what happened to the Cornell wrestling team that weekend.

Cokeley Brothers: And I mean, this is a guy that we saw, uh, at the start of the year, we thought he was going to be a 41 pounder. He says, I'm bumping up to 49. He takes a loss to, uh, Utah Valley's David Evans, like week one. And it's like, Hmm,
Cokeley Brothers: He'll be another guy. And then, and then especially with how 149 panned out, it's like, yeah, this way, this way it's total chaos. Like you wrestle, you wrestle this bracket 10 times. You're going to get, you know, however many different results with Shane Van Ness being the champ of basically all of those brackets.
