I'm proud of what we've done with this show and everything around it. it's It's not because we're great podcasters or anything, but i'm like I'm kind of proud of the way the show's brought the whole Snow community or at least a lot of it together, giving it something to rally around and feel like it's a part of.
00:05:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
and It's been good, man. Guys, I hear all the time, like guys that it would never even know each other, would never have spoken, now speak on a weekly basis or a daily basis even. and I mean, we know that in our immediate little, you know our little our our little group.
00:05:55
RICK JAMES
Uh-huh.
00:05:57

RICK JAMES
Yeah, it's been great. hundred It's been great. Yeah. I love the guys we met on this. I mean, not even just our little, or it's not even little, our group's not little anymore, but even just everybody has been great.

Connecting Snow Professionals

00:06:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
Going to the events, getting to meet guys, you know here and hearing what the show's done for for guys in different ways. And you know just basically, I've heard time and time again, like, hey, thanks so much for having so-and-so on, because now you know he's got a company that's just like mine. I reached out. He's really cool. He talked to me. And you know now I learned a lot. It's it's putting people in touch. well like We're facilitators.
00:06:46
The SnowJobs Podcast
you know putting people that wouldn't normally know about each other in touch and it's allowing people to grow together and I think that's freaking awesome. so you know And that was that was what we started doing, right? We wanted to showcase snow guys and let them promote their businesses on the show and tell everybody how they do things. and You know, let everybody know that they're not alone out there.
00:07:09
The SnowJobs Podcast
We're all doing the same shit. and But what happened in the aggregate of that is, uh, you know, we, we showed a lot of guys that we all have the same struggles, the same pain points, um, you know, the same challenges, uh, the same mission, you know, but the only difference in snow is scale.
00:07:24
RICK JAMES
100%. Yep.
00:07:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
Everybody's doing the same shit, right?
00:07:28
RICK JAMES
Exactly. That's what it is. I mean, it doesn't matter. We're all doing the same job at the end of the day. It's just better how you get there. I mean, it's, it's just, uh, the size, I mean, everybody's different size and they just have, we all have the same problems, just a little, little different as in how you deal with them.
00:07:44
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's it.
00:07:45
RICK JAMES
And yeah, that's what you always say.
00:07:45
The SnowJobs Podcast
Same circus, different clowns.
00:07:49

The SnowJobs Podcast
He is always grinding, always busting his ass. I'm glad we were able to get him on and let him tell his story. um Wish you all the best in the future there, Luke. What else we got here, Jay?
00:16:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
Arctic Army Roll Call Episode 2, Drop Thursday. All right, if you haven't,
00:16:09
RICK JAMES
Yep. Johnny, big daddy.
00:16:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's it. If you haven't gotten to that out one yet, it's a great list. And as always with big daddy, John Starik, he's the director of operations for Arctic snow and ice control. John is, uh, I think it's safe to say John's forgotten more about snow in 30 something years than I'll have ever, I'll ever learn 33.
00:16:27
RICK JAMES
33 was it 33 was there.
00:16:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, I think 33.
00:16:29
RICK JAMES
like goes Yeah. He's got a little bit of passion in his voice. He knows what he's doing. So.
00:16:34
The SnowJobs Podcast
He's a legend. He is a legend.
00:16:35
RICK JAMES
He is.
00:16:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
So it's, uh, really a blessing.
00:16:37
RICK JAMES
Love that guy. Snapchat him every day.
00:16:39
The SnowJobs Podcast
Do you really?
00:16:40
RICK JAMES
He's got, he's got great Snapchat. He's got a great TikTok. He's funnier now.
00:16:44
The SnowJobs Podcast
Big Daddy, Big Daddy.
00:16:45
RICK JAMES
Big daddy.
00:16:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
he is He is a funny, funny man, man. Anytime you can get information out of ah a guy that's been doing it that long, that's a blessing. So thanks to John again for giving us the time and thanks to Arctic for bringing that to us.
00:16:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
It was, ah I thought it was a great conversation. Really ah explained a lot of a lot of things, ways you can improve.
00:17:01
RICK JAMES
Oh yeah.
00:17:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
I love it.
00:17:06
RICK JAMES
Dennis leasing all that. Oh, yeah, that's other there Yeah, he got on you a little bit for not updating your fleet
00:17:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
Absolutely. How that whole deal works, how you can, you know, you can acquire slightly used, never seen dirt, snow equipment for relatively reasonable prices.
00:17:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, he did. He told me I should be flipping my fleet every year or two, but I don't know, man. I, I they're, they're still brand new. It's not like I'm putting, it's not like I'm putting glacier hours on them where I'm getting 900 hours a year on them.
00:17:35
RICK JAMES
I wish now we're not doing that.
00:17:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
I think our, like, I want to say our worst winner as far as hours. I think I still put less than 110 hours on the damn things. So it's like, it's hard to justify.
00:17:46
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:17:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
Okay. It came in with nine hours. I put 110 hours on it. You know, I'm like, I'm at 120 hours and I'm going to turn the thing over.
00:17:56
RICK JAMES
Yeah, true. I don't know.
00:17:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
But it allowed me.
00:17:58
RICK JAMES
A couple of years ago,

Current Winter Season & Weather Challenges

00:18:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
It allowed me to buy it in the first place.
00:18:00
RICK JAMES
go ahead.
00:18:02
RICK JAMES
Exactly.
00:18:02
The SnowJobs Podcast
Dennis, because I couldn't have gone to, I couldn't have afforded to go to the case dealership and said, Hey, give me that one brand new. No way.
00:18:08
RICK JAMES
Mm-hmm.
00:18:09
The SnowJobs Podcast
Couldn't afford double.
00:18:09
RICK JAMES
Yeah. It's definitely good to put hours on stuff. I mean, it's, we had a good year, a couple of years ago, we got that one for Cal, we almost put a thousand hours on that thing that winter.
00:18:18
The SnowJobs Podcast
I know you did.
00:18:18
RICK JAMES
That thing was, that was awesome. That was super fun.
00:18:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
I know you guys crushed it that winter. Hopefully this is a, and this is looking like the same kind of winter for you. So we'll see.
00:18:29
RICK JAMES
Yeah, I don't know. We'll see.
00:18:31
The SnowJobs Podcast
You don't know.
00:18:31
RICK JAMES
Hopefully it needs to pick up.
00:18:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
You don't think, how many pushes so far?
00:18:33
RICK JAMES
We haven't got that one. I mean, oh that was number five. Well, total with cleanups is 10. So.
00:18:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
All right. Well, I mean, you're getting there. Uh, what did you, did you do 10 pushes all last year?
00:18:44
RICK JAMES
Well.
00:18:47
RICK JAMES
No, I think we had seven.
00:18:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
All right. So not bad for still before the first of the year, got three months to go.
00:18:50
RICK JAMES
So.
00:18:54
RICK JAMES
Right now. Yeah, hopefully they say, what is it? They're saying it's neutral now. So I know La Nino and Nino.
00:19:01
The SnowJobs Podcast
Neutral.
00:19:02
RICK JAMES
So it's supposed to be like a...
00:19:03
The SnowJobs Podcast
If you listen to the weather guys.
00:19:06
RICK JAMES
Oh, did we want to get into the weather, guys?
00:19:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, the only thing I know for sure right now is it's true.
00:19:13
RICK JAMES
Oh, they got that, right?
00:19:15
The SnowJobs Podcast
That is true. I think we're, we're almost single digits.
00:19:16
RICK JAMES
did they Did they get the temps right for you? Did they get the temps right for you?
00:19:20
The SnowJobs Podcast
Uh, they were a little high, but then again, they always are high for us. We're always a couple of degrees colder than they think it is going to be on the the computer.
00:19:29
RICK JAMES
ah Yeah. Well, what was that?
00:19:31
The SnowJobs Podcast
I don't know.
00:19:33
RICK JAMES
Would that be a swing and a mess then? Little mist the bit outside.
00:19:35
The SnowJobs Podcast
No, give it to him. I'll give it to him. ah You know what? The only thing I care about is if you if you're hovering around the freezing mark, get that right. If if we're going to be below freezing, get that right.
00:19:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
Don't say we're going to be above freezing if we're going to be below and vice versa.
00:19:51
RICK JAMES
Hmm.
00:19:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
You know, that's the only thing I care about. If if they're saying it's going to be 15 and it's 12, I really don't give a fuck.
00:19:56
RICK JAMES
Oh.
00:19:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
That doesn't really mean much to me.
00:19:58
RICK JAMES
That's good. That does not sound like the Steve. I know Steve likes it.
00:20:02
The SnowJobs Podcast
No, I said the the only thing I care about is that 32 degree mark, you know, just get that right.
00:20:06
RICK JAMES
I'm just giving you shit. I know.
00:20:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
And I really, I do not care. The only, uh, I, I'm getting a little, I'm getting a little tired of the 0.1 zero to one inch fucking forecasts that turn into three and a half to five.
00:20:12
RICK JAMES
Let's go. I'm pulling the pin. Let's pull the pin.
00:20:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
That, uh, I'm getting a little tired of that. That's, that's wearing a little thin, but you know, we'll see.
00:20:25
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:20:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
I don't have any of my weather man fucking sound bites tonight. So.
00:20:29
RICK JAMES
What?
00:20:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
I don't, I, I put them all, I, I know I put them on the back burner.
00:20:31
RICK JAMES
That should be a staple.
00:20:35
The SnowJobs Podcast
I brought some Jeremy favorites tonight. So, but, uh, yeah, I mean, it it's dude, it's been good.
00:20:37
RICK JAMES
Oh boy.
00:20:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
We've, I can't complain. We've, we've been pushing. So it's, it's been good.
00:20:46
RICK JAMES
ah You guys have been out. I mean, before, you need never wanted to snow before Christmas.
00:20:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah. We've been doing it.
00:20:50
RICK JAMES
I think that's what your goal was for no snow before Christmas. What have you been out five times?
00:20:53
The SnowJobs Podcast
I don't mind. I don't mind like one, but this is like, I don't, I can't remember. And when Doyle starts, when Doyle comes on, he can kind of tell me his opinion though.
00:21:01
RICK JAMES
okay okay
00:21:03
The SnowJobs Podcast
I can't remember the last time we've pushed this many times before Christmas where we got, like, I think we're on, I think James said before the show five, I think we are on five and that's yeah, that's not, uh, that ah we're close.
00:21:14
RICK JAMES
That's great you already hit your minimum for your contracts you said okay Wow,
00:21:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, we're very close. We are, I think 14. I think we're at right now, 14 or 15.
00:21:24
RICK JAMES
yeah, we don't have that
00:21:27
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah. I mean, if you, if you want to go with the certified totals, but who knows national weather service, I don't think we're close.
00:21:35
RICK JAMES
ah We have 10.3. So push an inch.
00:21:38
The SnowJobs Podcast
10.3. We're in the lead.
00:21:39
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:21:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
We're in the lead.
00:21:40
RICK JAMES
Yeah. hu
00:21:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
We're, we're killing it.
00:21:41
RICK JAMES
wow
00:21:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, we did. We did. We overperformed a couple on a couple. Uh, but the, um, the guys around are all reporting the same thing. Like everybody saw a widespread three to five last storm, uh, three to six to let the storm before that.
00:21:55
RICK JAMES
Guys are
00:21:56
The SnowJobs Podcast
So, I mean, it's, it's been like weekly. We've been having to drop blades. So it's been, it's been good. We're working through some.
00:22:02
RICK JAMES
getting trained in guys are getting trained in them.
00:22:04
The SnowJobs Podcast
got that's Yeah, guys are in different seats. We we we got kind of caught where they were so they they put out that 0.10 to one inch mark. And we weren't yeah we weren't really worried about it.
00:22:14
RICK JAMES
every day.
00:22:17
The SnowJobs Podcast
We thought it was going to be a salt event. And then, oh, look at that. We got two inches plus in an hour and a half. We better get pushing. So.
00:22:27
RICK JAMES
Let's pull, let's, let's pull the pin on Doyle when he gets on and that stuff in our Snapchat group. I know how much he likes that.
00:22:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
That will not be hard. That will not be hard to do.
00:22:35
RICK JAMES
I cannot wait.
00:22:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
Not be hard to do at all. Oh man. So what else we got for our week in review

00:23:33
RICK JAMES
I've heard... Really? Sweet.
00:23:39
The SnowJobs Podcast
It's a blank. I figured out it's a blanket term. It's a blanket term to be able to be used for any accumulation squall.
00:23:47
RICK JAMES
to Does not surprise me. Does not surprise me.
00:23:50
The SnowJobs Podcast
It's a squall that lasted 36 hours.
00:23:53
RICK JAMES
It's a long squall.
00:23:54
The SnowJobs Podcast
Drop 24 inches on you.
00:23:55
RICK JAMES
It's a long one.
00:23:56
The SnowJobs Podcast
There's no definition for what a squall actually is. You know, shelter.
00:24:00
RICK JAMES
They'll say that the squalls we've had where they, I mean, I told you, we had like a Amber alert come across all the phones about a squall. I'm like, what the fuck is this? And there's a quick moving squall.
00:24:12
RICK JAMES
There's a quick moving squall coming through. I'm like, who cares? There's wind and snow. It's a normal day here in North Dakota. I mean, why are we putting it?
00:24:18
The SnowJobs Podcast
The only other time I've had that, ah that weather alert come as a tornado. And so a squall is apparently on the level of a tornado.
00:24:23
RICK JAMES
Yeah, we're all, we're all like, what are why are our phones going off?
00:24:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
Seek shelter immediately.
00:24:29
RICK JAMES
like We look out the window. It's like windy and i'm like, okay.
00:24:34

00:26:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
He is out of his mind.
00:26:08
RICK JAMES
So, and then he, he left here Friday, went out to lunch with him. I think we were smithers here and we went to the brick house eight, I think it was four o'clock, five o'clock. He took off, went to Bozeman.
00:26:20
RICK JAMES
Left for Bozeman Friday night. Said he was there for like five hours out of autopilot. And then he, he was back here this morning at nine o'clock. I had breakfast with him this morning at nine o'clock and he's going to be in Cleveland on Monday for some meetings said or something.
00:26:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
He is out of his fucking mind.
00:26:33
RICK JAMES
It's like the dude's just all, he's all over uncle Rick, just giving her.

00:30:30
RICK JAMES

00:30:31
James Doyle
Where did that ever originate?
00:30:33
The SnowJobs Podcast
That was at Simon and Hartford.
00:30:33
RICK JAMES
I know that's Simon when you're walking around the whole time.
00:30:35
The SnowJobs Podcast
You were on the phone.
00:30:37
RICK JAMES
It's like Mr.

00:30:53
RICK JAMES

00:30:59
The SnowJobs Podcast
How's everything, bud?
00:31:00
James Doyle
Good, man. Everything's great. Everything's good. Can't complain. Life's good. Business is good. Everything's everything's rolling like it should be.

00:31:13
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's awesome.
00:31:13
James Doyle
Very, ah very grateful and blessed. It's a good time of year. It's our favorite time of the holidays. Me and my wife love ah Christmas time, we always try to get down to New York City and see the tree and stuff. And just like just a good time of year, things start to slow down a little bit with the business and you know start to shift into the snow stuff. So it's ah it's a good time to welcome them in. And it's been a little bit of a change to be expected, just getting acclimated. and um But it's been good. It's been really good.
00:31:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
Good for you dude. Good for you.
00:31:42
RICK JAMES
Yeah. I love your videos of your little boy always with you and playing with him. And that's, that's as sweet him and all your equipment training. I'm young. You can just tell he's just looking in his eyes.
00:31:51
James Doyle
Oh, yeah.
00:31:52
RICK JAMES
He just loves it and obviously looks up to daddy. So that's pretty cool.
00:31:56
James Doyle
Yep. Yeah, no, it's that's that's the point of it. All right. I mean, it's you know, I tell my wife all the time, you know, we could stop right here and like I could go back to, you know, one truck and, you know, one excavator and one snow plow. And, you know, I could just do that if nobody else was around. Right. Like that'd be the thing. It'd be like that's all I'd have. It'd be like for me, you know, like We're doing it for more than that.
00:32:17
James Doyle
You know, the guys that are here, their families, and like my family that I'm growing, you know, I want to build something for them. Whether it's, uh, you know, the exit plan is always the goal, right? Whether it's to hand it down to them or to have something to sell off and, you know, down the road, whatever, you know, we're handed off, however that works, you know?
00:32:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
00:32:33
James Doyle
So, but yeah, he he loves it. He's, uh, he's all about it, which is great. So trying to slow the time down a little bit, but I don't know, you can't do that.
00:32:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
It goes fast, dude.
00:32:41
RICK JAMES
Very fast.
00:32:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
You blink, you blink in there.
00:32:43
RICK JAMES
Yeah, I love that.
00:32:45
The SnowJobs Podcast
Fucking 10.
00:32:46
RICK JAMES
All right.
00:32:46
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's incredible.
00:32:48
RICK JAMES
I love that last week, feeling the old Tonka truck with the, with the old, uh, steel wrists there.
00:32:48
James Doyle
yeah
00:32:54
RICK JAMES
That was pretty sweet.
00:32:54
The SnowJobs Podcast
That was skill.
00:32:55
RICK JAMES
That was loyal skill right there.
00:32:55
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah. That was skill.
00:32:55
James Doyle
Yeah. Yeah,
00:32:59
James Doyle
Phil, we were making brine and we, uh, we started cause we still got the brine buddy and we're, um, we tried a new supplier, a solar salt auto Rhode Island. So we just, uh.
00:33:10
James Doyle
we dumped the 20 yard dumpster inside the shop and so we're just scooping out of that and filling it and we're like you know we're gonna try this a little bit different because we've always just done it out of the back of like a mason dump or something inside the shop and now we're that new material is just so fine and pure it makes it so much quicker and shout out to Pat Salmon he got me hooked up with those guys over at Eastern Salt so super happy he got us connected and been making it a lot faster which is great so I was messing around and you know you always see those videos of the the job site guys dumping the you know the kid on the in the neighborhood, watching them work.
00:33:47
James Doyle
They bring their little truck out and you know they're trying to include them and dumping stuff into his toys.
00:33:49
RICK JAMES
yeah
00:33:50
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, absolutely.
00:33:50
RICK JAMES
Haha.
00:33:53
James Doyle
So I was like, I'm going to try it. see it and I mean, it was just like his face like lit up, man. He was like, he brought it over.
00:33:57
RICK JAMES
um
00:33:58
James Doyle
I hit the i hit the horn. like You can't hear it because I put ah put audio to the video, but I hit the horn and he like stops and he stands back. and he walk you know it's like He just knows it's just crazy.
00:34:08
RICK JAMES
That's great.
00:34:08
James Doyle
If he ever goes to be a doctor and like follows in the medical field, like my wife, I'm just going to like, I'd be like, what happened, man?
00:34:14
RICK JAMES
What happened?
00:34:14
James Doyle
Like you were a natural, you were a natural, but you know what, whatever.
00:34:15
RICK JAMES
You're on such a good path.
00:34:19
James Doyle
I won't force him to do anything, man. Whatever, whatever he chooses in life is what I'll support.
00:34:25
RICK JAMES
That's awesome. I'll dry were his hands from playing in the salt.
00:34:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's awesome.
00:34:28
James Doyle
Oh yeah. They were dry, dried right out.
00:34:31
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, man.
00:34:32
RICK JAMES
I thought I was like, oh, that's going to be, you're going to need some lotion.
00:34:33
James Doyle
Yeah.
00:34:36
James Doyle
yeah Oh yeah.
00:34:36
RICK JAMES
That was great.
00:34:37
James Doyle
Yeah.
00:34:38
The SnowJobs Podcast
Is he operating anything on his own yet?
00:34:38
James Doyle
But yeah, I mean, everything's great.
00:34:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
Can he operate it if he's on your lap?
00:34:43
James Doyle
Oh yeah. A hundred percent.
00:34:44
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:34:44
James Doyle
He'll the skid steer.
00:34:45
RICK JAMES
well yeah
00:34:45
James Doyle
I mean, excavators, he can, he can swing the cab and whatnot. Um, he runs the roller switches on the, on the steel wrist, on the joysticks. He'll run the rollers, which is, I mean, he can't do any continuous functions, but you know, he, he knows what they, he knows what they do.
00:34:56
The SnowJobs Podcast
Nice.
00:34:58
James Doyle
And, uh, he'll drive that he'll drive the two 89, you know, or the two 99 skid steers just on my lap. Love loves the loader. loaders his favorite machine so he loves all the loaders which is great so it's funny perfect that's awesome
00:35:11
RICK JAMES
and Speaking of speaking of loaders, Andy Brown's little daughter, his daughter and little boy, they asked Santa Claus, directly asked Santa Claus, I heard this, for a skidster and a payloader.
00:35:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's cool.
00:35:23
RICK JAMES
and not ah Not a toy one, real ones they want from Santa Claus. So I thought that was pretty funny.
00:35:30
The SnowJobs Podcast
Just gonna weigh that sleigh down ah just a bit.
00:35:32
RICK JAMES
Yeah. Well, they're gonna make money. They're here to make money, so.
00:35:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's great. Yeah, you you know, you got you got something to look forward to, James, um all these days of training the little one how to operate the equipment on your lap and everything.
00:35:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
And then they're going to they know from watching you do it. They know how to start it. They know what the damn code to each machine is. um The day you got to look forward to and look out for is the day where you're in a different part of the shop and your kid is there and he's old enough that he activates the seat safety on his own with his own weight.
00:35:57
James Doyle
yeah
00:36:07
The SnowJobs Podcast
and he starts the machine and takes off. On his own.
00:36:11
James Doyle
yeah
00:36:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
that That's the data. Oh my God. I've never run so fast.
00:36:15
James Doyle
yep yep that's gonna be awesome
00:36:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
It comes fast, dude.
00:36:19
James Doyle
yeah
00:36:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
It comes fast. so Oh man. So what's new for Innovative with the Snow Division? You've you've done some ah you've done some stuff in the last two years.

Innovative Snow Service Strategies

00:36:31
James Doyle
Yeah, man, in terms of like new, nothing's really new. We're kind of in the same, ah you know, last year we ah we took on a site, you know, a little bit, I've always kind of been against traveling for snow. um It works for some guys and for some guys, just for me, like comfort level and just controlled chaos. I just try to keep everything, you know, tight niche within like two towns. um You know, there's enough market share here that, you know, we can have a pretty big footprint, but you know, there's also, we're also limited with,
00:37:00
James Doyle
you know sizing and whatnot and different types of ah you know properties that we could service just because of the sizing of the area. so We took on a big industrial site last year out out in the center of the state, a lot lower of snow snow accumulations than kind of where we're at up in the hills here. so That was the kind of the saving grace. It was like a last minute thing um for actually the property investment company that that we rent and lease our our shop from.
00:37:28
James Doyle
They own industrial properties all over the country and so the property manager reached out to us and we took that on. We put a couple loaders down there and you know once one dedicated salt truck and we just basically you know set that site up with a dedicated crew um and it worked out great.
00:37:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
the end.
00:37:45
James Doyle
It was a seasonal contract. you know it was ah It was a little bit of a light year last year um trending after like the last three or four years is pretty comparable and they just wanted to go to Again, and we could go down a whole nother rabbit hole of this, but they wanted to go to a per push, you know basically a per occurrence, per threshold.
00:38:02
James Doyle
And you know I actually talked to, like, Santa Lucido a little bit about it. And you know I was trying to put some numbers on the wall. And I was like, it just doesn't make sense for me to try to like dedicate and and and acquire equipment and try to put all those resources together in hopes that it snows.
00:38:19
James Doyle
you know like The per push price.
00:38:20
The SnowJobs Podcast
Mm hmm. Absolutely.
00:38:22
James Doyle
and per salting application price would have to be so astronomical to justify you know if we only got three or four events to like cover what you know what i mean just to you know recover your costs on equipment.
00:38:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
huh
00:38:33
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, need a retainer or something.
00:38:33
James Doyle
and Not only that, but you know yeah not only that but like just just guys that are willing and able and and and sufficient enough to do that site to keep them
00:38:46
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:38:47
James Doyle
If they're not going to work, they're going to go somewhere else. And and point point being is like up here, it's a lot more active.
00:38:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
Absolutely.
00:38:52
James Doyle
So like if there was snow here and there was nothing down there and they couldn't work, we could always put them up here, but then it's like, then we have extra guys. And it just, so needless to say, we, we just figured it was just, it was worth a pass for us.
00:39:05
James Doyle
So that was kind of something new that we tried last year. And, you know, just even in town, we've had a lot of. had a lot of pushback with you know seasonal accounts.
00:39:13
RICK JAMES
Mm hmm.
00:39:15
James Doyle
So we're about 60, 40, 40% per push, 60% contractual. um Most of them, I would say out of that 60%, like 35, 40% is our year-round clients that we service year-round for landscapes maintenance as well.
00:39:31
James Doyle
um you know And the other percentage is just snow only. you know They have other providers.
00:39:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
00:39:38
James Doyle
but Um, so it's, it's been good, but we're seeing a lot of, we're seeing not a lot, but a decent amount of pushback, you know, that I'm curious to see what's going to happen over the next couple of years, because I just don't think with the cost of equipment and truck, you know, just, just even pickup trucks.
00:39:52
James Doyle
Um, I just don't think that people realize that you can't expect the snow provider to just be reliable with reliable enough equipment, well paid for taking care of guys that are, you know, adequately you know compensated to do the work reliably and be proactive.
00:39:52
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, yeah.
00:40:07
The SnowJobs Podcast
Proper insurance.
00:40:09
James Doyle
Yeah, you know yeah and the insurance rabbit hole.
00:40:10
The SnowJobs Podcast
Crazy.
00:40:11
James Doyle
I mean i just don't think that and don't think the consumer market understands that like this is what you have to do to have reliable contractors that are well set up to ah service you.
00:40:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
00:40:24
James Doyle
um so I don't know. For us, I'd rather not have my back up against the wall with all or nothing for either side, either contractual or non-contractual.
00:40:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
Sure.
00:40:33
James Doyle
A good mix is is the way that we like to roll. and um There's been a couple of years where we've been more heavy on each side. and you know We're kind of comfortable where we're at. um but it'd It'd be nice. we have a couple We got a couple bigger industrial sites local you know right in our town now, um the last year that um they've just been proven to be really, really, really efficient.
00:40:53
James Doyle
and Sometimes it's easier than running through a Starbucks Plaza and having to do a shit ton of detail work and curb lines.
00:40:59
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, I believe it.
00:40:59
James Doyle
and you know basically take ah a magic a race marker and erase all the snow out of the place because there's nowhere to put it like that's the way we look at it's like if there's snow anywhere like it's all gone get rid of it like that's what we tell her like just get rid of it you know is where as we go into a giant wide open parking lot it's just it's just easy you know um so they scare you a little bit you know when you start getting into those bigger you know multiple multiple multiple 10 plus acre sites but um you know for us it's just our bread and butter is you know under 10 acres you know so you just start taking them on they get a little nerve-wracking but
00:41:07
RICK JAMES
Mm-hmm.
00:41:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
00:41:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh yeah.
00:41:31
James Doyle
You know, you get used to it. So.
00:41:34
The SnowJobs Podcast
How is your foray in into liquids? Cause when we had John for episode one, you weren't doing liquids yet. How's that been working out for you?
00:41:41
James Doyle
Yeah. Yeah. So, uh, the liquids have been really good. Um, you know, it's, it's been about two years now really invest in the time and education into it. And out of everybody here, um, on our winter operations, I'm really the, uh, spearhead with the liquids. It's, I haven't really adopted it into kind of tasking that off, so to speak.
00:42:01
James Doyle
ah Last year i was I was very, I don't want to say I was minimally involved in the winter time, but i was I was less involved than I am this year. I was kind of just putting out fires and driving around and overseeing and um you know jumping in a loader, jumping in a plow truck just because we had a lot going on last year.
00:42:18
James Doyle
We kind of scaled it back a little bit this year and I focused more on quality over quantity, dropped a couple sites for just people that couldn't understand like, hey, this is the service we're going to offer.
00:42:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
no Nope.
00:42:24
RICK JAMES
Mm hmm.
00:42:28
James Doyle
just way too much and we still have a couple of those right like you can't get rid of all of them but um so that being said with the liquids it's you know I've spent a lot of time you know a lot of time with Jordan um you know just a lot of helping hands and you know information back and forth to kind of just make it make it right and make it work for us.
00:42:50
James Doyle
Pat Salmon's been a really good help this year as well up at Northeast De-Icing, DJ Salmon on a landscape.
00:42:54
RICK JAMES
A little bit more.
00:42:56
James Doyle
you know They're using this stuff every day. um They're selling the selling the equipment. He's the one that got me hooked up with a really, really good clean solar salt ah provider, which has increased our our volume of batch making significantly to where like I was ready to stop doing it because our salt was so shitty.
00:43:13
James Doyle
um And so it made it but was worth it to go for a two-hour drive to do it. So um it's been really good. it's Like I said, it's been a learning curve. We're in a very, very high moisture content um you know market here.
00:43:25
James Doyle
So you know similar to you, where rain before, rain after, where I've heard like Robert, I've heard a lot of other guys, it's like you know we pretreat and it either rains first or you know you don't put enough down and it dilutes way too quick on you know on the back end and there's no residual.
00:43:25
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
00:43:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
00:43:40
James Doyle
And like, yes, but I think that we've had really good results. um I laugh like one of my guys was here making Brian yesterday or yesterday we had an event two days ago I think I've lost track of the days here just spent multiple back to back salting and small push events.
00:43:54
The SnowJobs Podcast
Mm hmm. Yep, yep.
00:43:56
James Doyle
But one of my guys was here making Brian yesterday and he He comes in and he and one of the other guys came back and was just dropping a truck off and he's like, oh, you're going to make more of that stuff that doesn't work.
00:44:07
James Doyle
And it's like, he doesn't realize it.
00:44:08
RICK JAMES
Oh boy.
00:44:10
James Doyle
So we, we had like a, we had a storm that went but was supposed to be like a quarter of an inch to a dusting. So like we pre sprayed the shit out of everything, you know, realistically for what, you know, correct, you know, gallons per acre, but we treated everything, you know, really, really just because we didn't want to have to go out and, you know, scrape very, very minimally.
00:44:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
Sure.
00:44:28
James Doyle
like right on the cusp of needing to plow and shovel versus just trying to burn it off. And then what do you know, or four o'clock in the morning and it just keeps dumping and dumping and dumping. We got more snow and after I got a text message saying everything was done.
00:44:43
James Doyle
got more snow in a three hour timeframe the next morning, almost eight hours after than we did the whole entire duration the day before. So my guys are looking at it and they're like, wow. And I'm like, guys, it's it's not meant to hold off an inch of snow.
00:44:55
RICK JAMES
Right.
00:44:55
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:44:56
James Doyle
It's meant to minimize bond. It'll, it'll hold off and a half an inch, a quarter of an inch, um, to where you could just hit it one more time on a post treat and it's, it's done, you know, but it just, it made me laugh.
00:45:07
James Doyle
And I'm just like, all right, I'm like, You're right, because I'm the one that's invested the two years of learning and education.
00:45:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
Mm hmm.
00:45:12
James Doyle
And you know and it's not you're not going to burn off two inches of snow with it. But um we've had really we've had really good luck with it.
00:45:16
RICK JAMES
No,
00:45:19
James Doyle
you know To answer your question, a long-winded answer. We've had really good luck with it. I think with more time, making batches quicker. I mean, we got 15,000 or 16,000 gallons of storage.
00:45:30
James Doyle
And I mean, we're we're going through it pretty pretty quick. We went through 8,500 gallons almost the other day. So I mean, we're we're rolling through it.
00:45:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
Hmm.
00:45:36
RICK JAMES
Nice. yeah yeah
00:45:37
James Doyle
so
00:45:38
The SnowJobs Podcast
Nice.
00:45:39
RICK JAMES
Yeah, according to your snaps, you've been investing in storage tanks and everything. You're you're really getting into it. So that's that's good. And obviously the education side of it really helped out for you.
00:45:45
James Doyle
Yeah,
00:45:48
RICK JAMES
so
00:45:49
James Doyle
yeah yeah, yeah, just talking with guys that are doing it have done it um have been around it. I mean that that that helps and it's um you know, of course you get the kickback like I've seen some local guys like it was in one of our snap groups where I sent some screenshots over is like this guy's like stop spraying that that shit. And it's like, what is that shit? You don't even know what that shit is.
00:46:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
Not the stuff I sell.
00:46:11
RICK JAMES
right
00:46:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
but That's that was a different guy.
00:46:14
James Doyle
No, that was a, there so that was a different one.
00:46:15
RICK JAMES
like
00:46:16
James Doyle
That wasn't even, that wasn't even that.
00:46:17
RICK JAMES
yeah
00:46:18
James Doyle
This was just some, this was just some innocent bystander that was a Facebook friend that was just like, you know, mad that I was spraying it it in a parking a lot because he sees what the state does. And you know, the state uses no inhibitors that are, you know, no additives as a rust, you know, corrosion inhibitor.
00:46:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:46:31
James Doyle
So it's like, they're just jumping straight salt, Brian, you know, completely, you know, uncalculated, just opening up of a gravity ball valve and just dumping it down the highway until it's empty.
00:46:36
RICK JAMES
Right.
00:46:39
The SnowJobs Podcast
I gotcha. Yep.
00:46:41
James Doyle
So it's like, that's where Brian gets a bad name, right?
00:46:41
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:46:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah. A hundred percent.
00:46:44
James Doyle
They don't, it's just, so it's like, I typed out this whole thing and I was like, you know, and it was very professional. I mean, I had, I think like 25 people like my comment. And I mean, and the guy never commented back, but whatever.
00:46:56
The SnowJobs Podcast
Was this, was this the rusty black top one?
00:47:00
James Doyle
Yes. He said that the, he said that that stuff, he said that that stuff rusts the blacktop.
00:47:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
Okay.
00:47:01
RICK JAMES
Oh yeah.
00:47:01
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah Yeah.
00:47:05
James Doyle
It rusts oil, stone and sand. I'm not sure how, but that was, but whatever.
00:47:08
RICK JAMES
Oh boy. Wow.
00:47:10
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh my God.
00:47:10
James Doyle
I mean, in respect to it. It's not that the guys in the construction industry is not in the snow industry Which is also a downplayed industry and we can go into a whole other tank tangent with that but whatever it is what it is Yes,
00:47:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
Have you seen pushback from customers that don't want it?
00:47:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
Cause I know we, we have, when we, when we approach it here with, with certain customers, they don't want any part of it.
00:47:30
James Doyle
yes and no
00:47:35
The SnowJobs Podcast
They like to see the granular. I don't know why.
00:47:38
RICK JAMES
yeah
00:47:38
James Doyle
Yes and no. So yeah. So to your point, yes, I've had a couple of people say, well, you know, we, we like to see it so that people know when something was applied.
00:47:46
The SnowJobs Podcast
Mm hmm.
00:47:48
James Doyle
I said, so like my response to that was okay. I understand. I'm in the business of results, not accommodation.
00:47:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, yep.
00:47:58
RICK JAMES
Yeah, yeah, right.
00:47:58
James Doyle
Like if the results are there, why do I need to put something down to accommodate the fear of not seeing something on the ground?
00:48:06
RICK JAMES
Uh-huh.
00:48:06
James Doyle
I guess was like the way that I answered it.
00:48:07
The SnowJobs Podcast
No.
00:48:08
James Doyle
I answered their question with a question and it would kind of just stop there. And I said, as long as there's blacktop and nobody's sliding, I think we'll be good. um So we left out with that. We had a couple retail spots that were like, they were very receptive to it at first.
00:48:24
James Doyle
And then I think some customers saw like a big black or a big magic tank with liquid coming out and i think it drew some questions we had to we made and ah like a ah an msds sheet like an actual like you know, like a data sheet, like this is what innovative salt brine, Crystal in our office, she made it all up.
00:48:38
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh geez.
00:48:40
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:48:43
James Doyle
And you know, she put it like with it with an actual data sheet from innovative surface solutions who sells the magic minus zero. So we took their whole entire thing, we put it on a PDF, and we emailed it to every single person that we have um as ah as a client with a liquid salt brine, you know, by innovative, this is what it is 23.3%, you know, ah salt, you know, water and That's it.
00:49:03
James Doyle
And then if we add an additive, here's the here's the additive that we're using and the and the info on that. And so that ever since we did that, we haven't heard anything. um But as in terms of pushback, as far as not wanting it for service, I mean,
00:49:12
RICK JAMES
that should be her right
00:49:17
James Doyle
Most of our clients are just as long as as long as they're getting the results. i mean they're They're happy with it. and you know Some of the property managers, therere they're they're happy that we're using less material because I can show them, like, hey, this is what I put down this storm um versus the guy across the street that you watch drive around for 15 minutes and just spread material until it was blacktop.
00:49:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:49:34
The SnowJobs Podcast
Cool.
00:49:37
James Doyle
He has no idea how much he put down. you know so um yeah i mean it's
00:49:41
The SnowJobs Podcast
cool
00:49:42
James Doyle
it's It's a lot. It's a lot of investment and a lot of time, you know, it's not just something, I mean, i I sprayed the side of a brand new Subaru the other night. I'll be the first one to say it. I mean, you're tired and you're not paying attention.
00:49:52
RICK JAMES
Perfect.
00:49:53
James Doyle
I mean, it's just, you know, it's not something that you could just send anybody out. And I was like, I was pretty mad at myself, but it was, it was 10 hours in the truck.
00:49:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:50:01
James Doyle
And I was like, I can't even believe I just did that. The guy was sitting right there. He's like, ah, it is what it is, man. It was an accident. I said, I obviously didn't mean to do it, but yeah.
00:50:11
RICK JAMES
Right.
00:50:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
Have a pack of carwash tickets in your car.
00:50:11
James Doyle
So.
00:50:12
RICK JAMES
Well, just wash it off. Wash it off.
00:50:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:50:14
RICK JAMES
I mean, that's a, that's a lot of people to think if you're putting this stuff down, it's good. Get on my car. I'm like, if it does, just rinse it off. It's no worse. It's, it's no worse than, you know, going behind when you're, when they're riding the city plow truck, that's spraying salt or liquid, you know, it's the same thing.
00:50:25
James Doyle
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
00:50:31
RICK JAMES
Wash it off. It's not going to instantly rust your vehicle. I have the same problem with guys in the summer about calcium chloride on ground rolls. Is it going to, I go. If you get it on, number one, you're driving too fast through it, and if you just go through it, it's gonna be fine.
00:50:45
RICK JAMES
But if you rinse it off, you'll be fine.
00:50:47
RICK JAMES
It's not like you're gonna jump up and attack your vehicle. It's just like, come on.
00:50:47
James Doyle
Yeah.
00:50:50
James Doyle
Right.
00:50:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yup.
00:50:51
James Doyle
Yeah.
00:50:51
RICK JAMES
It's a little common sense. It's a little common sense.
00:50:56
The SnowJobs Podcast
Got a couple new loaders. How are the talkies working out for you? You like them?

Snow Equipment Performance & Updates

00:51:01
James Doyle
Uh, they're good. Yeah. The, uh, the road mode is very impressive. Very impressive.
00:51:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:51:07
James Doyle
Yeah. 31 miles an hour downhill.
00:51:09
The SnowJobs Podcast
Really?
00:51:10
James Doyle
It's pretty fast.
00:51:10
RICK JAMES
Wow.
00:51:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's fast.
00:51:12
James Doyle
but
00:51:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:51:32
James Doyle
I don't know. I mean, is there more creature comforts? Yes, of course. But at the end of the day, I mean, those tax there, they, they push some good snow and the guys that are running them, they love them. Um, we had to figure out the road mode on it because it was deathly slow at like 20 miles an hour. It was like the nine Oh seven was screaming past it. But, um, yeah, I mean, they're good. Um, just basic. I mean, it sucks. There's no radio in them. You know, I think they're just ordered pretty basic, you know, to keep costs down. But, um,
00:52:01
James Doyle
Yeah, they they pushed, no problem. we we We got rid of all of our HLAs and we went to all cages this year. um We had one cage on a skid steer up at an HOA and just bought a used one just to try it out. I'd never tried one out in 10 years of plowing. I'd never tried a cage. Had just about everything else. We ran the Metal Plus and the HLAs the last couple of years or last four or five years and um had good luck with them. But ah had we we tried that cage in a storm that we had, this is actually what but ended up happening was we got that storm in April.
00:52:34
James Doyle
I don't know if you got snow then Steve last year. We got that like April spurt.
00:52:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah. Yep.
00:52:38
James Doyle
It was like the second week of April. Everybody was caught with their pants down. And so like we threw one salt on a switch and go like super fast. My loader was already out on a job. Skid steers were gone on a job and I had one tack rental loader that hadn't gotten picked up yet.
00:52:52
James Doyle
The fucking wiring for the HLAs there was no there was no connection on the tacked loader, so I couldn't use it.
00:52:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
00:53:01
James Doyle
So I couldn't use any of the wings. So we grabbed that cage pusher and put it on. The hydraulic lines were just long enough because it had an adapter plate from a loader loader coupler to a skid steer coupler.
00:53:12
James Doyle
So the hydraulic lines were just long enough. And often I was like, just go. I was like, just go to the upside of town where all the elevation, ah elevational snowfall happened and just start scraping. And he's the end of that storm happened.
00:53:24
James Doyle
And he goes, sell those HLAs. I said, what? And they were due, I mean, they were due for an upgrade. They were four years old, three years old. I think one of them was only a couple years old, but anyway, they scraped unbelievable.
00:53:34
James Doyle
Super, super happy. We were gonna buy a bunch of used ones I ended up getting in touch with. I mean, Adam from Premier Snow out there by Jeremy.
00:53:41
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
00:53:42
James Doyle
That dude called me and messaged me and Facebook messaged me.
00:53:42
RICK JAMES
yeah Yeah. Oh yeah, he's relentless.
00:53:46
James Doyle
He's like, hey, just give me a shot, just give me a shot. i mean i would I guarantee you he's got some really, really, really good ah consumers on his landscape at Snowside because that that dude is consistent, man.
00:53:57
James Doyle
And I ended up buying three from him. He bought me the Black Editions with ah but the Sabre carbide edges. And dude, let me tell you, ah they scrape unbelievably. Super impressed.
00:54:07
The SnowJobs Podcast
Nice.
00:54:08
James Doyle
Very simple setup.
00:54:09
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:54:09
James Doyle
Very impressed, though.
00:54:10
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:54:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah. I just sent Adam a customer this week. Actually somebody was looking for a, uh, a cage.
00:54:14
James Doyle
Yep.
00:54:17
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah. I was looking forward to try and win this year and then they dropped the ball on me.
00:54:17
James Doyle
Yeah.
00:54:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
So I had one coming, but didn't happen.
00:54:21
RICK JAMES
Oh yeah.
00:54:22
James Doyle
Yeah.
00:54:24
RICK JAMES
I loved, I loved the old black paint one. It's just over the blue, black over the blue though.
00:54:27
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah. The blacks look sharp.
00:54:30
RICK JAMES
That was kind of funny Doyle's little snap. So they just painted, it they just painted the black.
00:54:32
James Doyle
Do you see that? Yeah, the the guys from drop.
00:54:36
RICK JAMES
so Jesus.
00:54:39
James Doyle
Yeah, mass mass production and then change a few.
00:54:39
RICK JAMES
Come on people.
00:54:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
oh
00:54:42
James Doyle
That's all you got to do.
00:54:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's it.
00:54:43
RICK JAMES
Yeah, I guess that was a good s snap.
00:54:46
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, man.
00:54:46
RICK JAMES
I liked it.
00:54:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
So do you still have any of the and Mars or or just the talks now?
00:54:50
James Doyle
those just the rent though no Those are just anything other than the cat that we have, just ah just at least just a seasonal lease that we bring on.
00:54:56
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
00:54:57
James Doyle
oh
00:54:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
What do you like better? Do you like the talks or the Mars? Yeah. mar yeah
00:55:01
James Doyle
um i think they're pretty I think they're pretty comparative, um speed and size and power wise. As far as creature comforts, they're kind of comparable. um you know we we rented a yeah We rented an extra Yanmar last year from ah from a buddy of ours company just to kind of help him out during the winter.
00:55:19
James Doyle
He does do a lot of snow and gave us a you know very generous you know winter discount. you know and knew We knew we'd keep it clean and fluid film it for him and keep it washed off and whatnot.
00:55:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
Mm hmm.
00:55:28
James Doyle
So we had that last year. That was because we had that site out of town. So we were down a loader. So one of our loaders was down there.
00:55:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
00:55:34
James Doyle
So this year we didn't get that back. So we just we just stuck with the with the tax and didn't get that Yanmar again this year. but you know Like I said earlier, it just doesn't make sense for us. like They would just sit all year and I just don't think the cost makes sense for where we're at snow revenue wise. like It just makes sense to just shell out 15 grand for the winner per machine and just be done with it. I don't have to maintain them and let them sit all year and whatnot.
00:55:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
Gotcha. Cool, man.

Acknowledging Podcast Partners

00:56:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
Let's do a couple of commercials here and we'll come back and we'll ah keep talking to Mr. Doyle.
00:56:19
RICK JAMES
Mm hmm.
00:57:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
All right, guys, we're back. Thank you to our partners for that. Um, a bunch of them have been there almost the entire time, right?
00:57:21
RICK JAMES
Oh, yeah, definitely.
00:57:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
Jay muskox
00:57:22
RICK JAMES
It's got great partners. That's for sure.
00:57:25
The SnowJobs Podcast
is, I think since episode seven, if I remember correctly.
00:57:31
RICK JAMES
Yeah, they came on board pretty early. So that's good.
00:57:33
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, almost. Wow.
00:57:34
RICK JAMES
I just can't keep adding good ones.
00:57:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's awesome. Thank you, muskox.
00:57:37
RICK JAMES
You know, we just keep adding good ones and obvious.
00:57:38
The SnowJobs Podcast
Uh, We've had great, great partners, like everybody that wanted to be involved with this show that we actually allowed has been phenomenal. And we've heard nothing but positive feedback from people in the field too.
00:57:52
The SnowJobs Podcast
That, uh, and that's why they're, that's why they're allowed to be associated with the show.
00:57:53
RICK JAMES
huh
00:57:56
The SnowJobs Podcast
So it's been great, man. And it all got going with Mr. Doyle episode one, Thomas's Fargo ticket story.
00:58:02
RICK JAMES
so yeah
00:58:06
RICK JAMES
Yeah Yeah, he said he's coming back out here too if we get get a storm and he's available He's gonna come celebrity push again. So that'd be great with all the guys.
00:58:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, we've, we've been too busy.
00:58:14
RICK JAMES
I love to see him again. So I
00:58:16
The SnowJobs Podcast
We got to get them out for one of the, uh, the storm chasing episodes somewhere.
00:58:22
RICK JAMES
Yeah, he's got a little bit of stuff going on in his life, so we'll see what happens.
00:58:23
James Doyle
New Hampshire yeah, it's uh
00:58:27
The SnowJobs Podcast
Little bit, just a bit.
00:58:29
RICK JAMES
Little busy, little busy guy.
00:58:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh man.
00:58:32
RICK JAMES
So.
00:58:33
The SnowJobs Podcast
So how's the, uh, how's the new truck James? That thing looks sharp.
00:58:42
James Doyle
Probably not gonna look too hot in a couple years after we dedicated it to be a brine truck, but I mean, you'll have that I guess.
00:58:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
What do you got on there?
00:58:47
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:58:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
What size tanks I have?
00:58:50
James Doyle
To 1,000.
00:58:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
1,000.
00:58:52
James Doyle
Yep, yeah, it handles it pretty good.
00:58:53
RICK JAMES
you keep You keep your stuff clean.
00:58:56
James Doyle
Yeah, no, we we get it the we get it cleaned off every storm and salt neutralize it and do the best we can, but it's ah it handles it pretty good. If it was a fixed flatbed, it'd be a little bit better.
00:59:07
James Doyle
Having a subframe, it's a little ah little top heavy when she's full, but
00:59:13
RICK JAMES
Do you have baffles in it?
00:59:13
James Doyle
sir We got the four inch drain tile cut up in there, four foot sections.
00:59:19
RICK JAMES
That's what I was going to say. Yeah. Let's go to the safe.
00:59:20
James Doyle
Yeah, yeah.
00:59:22
RICK JAMES
Did you, how much did he put quite a bit? I was trying to, we, we have a, Oh, he did.
00:59:25
James Doyle
300 foot roll.
00:59:28
RICK JAMES
Okay.
00:59:28
James Doyle
Yeah, yeah.
00:59:30
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
00:59:30
James Doyle
Yeah, it works good.
00:59:31
RICK JAMES
We didn't, we didn't put anything in ours yet because the guys say it hasn't been too bad. So that was my next, that was my next option.
00:59:35
James Doyle
Oh man, that thing is,
00:59:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
Hmm.
00:59:38
James Doyle
Yeah, that, that thing's heavy, man. And it's the slosh. Oh, the slosh is actually worse than the weight. Honestly, if it's a, it helps a lot. Definitely helps.
00:59:48
RICK JAMES
Gotcha.
00:59:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, that's, that's what'll roll you. That's for sure.
00:59:52
James Doyle
Yeah. And I thought it was going to be bad. I mean, I was prepared to honestly, as silly as it sounds, I was prepared to, as much as I believe in the results for post-treating, I was a little bit nervous about plowing directly with the storm. I was just going to pre-treat and then drop the body and throw a salt around for the for the storm, for pushing, but I rolled with it. We had like a one-inch storm. I was like, whatever, we'll try it, you know? And I think it's good, you know? I got it i got it down pat now, just what to expect, so not too bad.
01:00:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
Very cool.

James Reflects on Past Episodes

01:00:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
So you still listen to the show or just episode one?
01:00:27
James Doyle
Me?
01:00:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah you
01:00:28
RICK JAMES
yeah
01:00:30
James Doyle
I got about 20 podcasts I try to listen to a week. I think it's been a couple episodes, maybe six or seven. I mean, I'm not gonna lie, I'm no bullshitter.
01:00:38
The SnowJobs Podcast
No, no, it's all good.
01:00:39
James Doyle
but every episode is tough. um mondays Mondays for me is modern wisdom with Chris with Williamson, but there's a there's there's some room in, you gotta listen to it, man.
01:00:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
Never heard of it.
01:00:52
James Doyle
You gotta listen to it. There's more than the snow job, but you guys bring exceptional value to the snow industry.
01:00:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
I disagree.
01:00:57
RICK JAMES
Oh, God.
01:00:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
I disagree.
01:00:59
RICK JAMES
Come on, Dale.
01:00:59
The SnowJobs Podcast
I disagree.
01:01:00
RICK JAMES
We're gonna have to believe this.
01:01:00
James Doyle
ah
01:01:01
RICK JAMES
We're gonna have to cut this out, Steve. We're not promoting other podcasts right now.
01:01:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
I disagree. I disagree. There are no other podcasts.
01:01:06
RICK JAMES
Jesus. Oh, my God.
01:01:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
Have you seen our rankings?
01:01:09
RICK JAMES
I thought we were partners.
01:01:10
The SnowJobs Podcast
We're like, we're like back and forth between Joe Rogan.
01:01:12
James Doyle
Nah,
01:01:14
The SnowJobs Podcast
That's it.
01:01:15
RICK JAMES
Oh, God.
01:01:15
The SnowJobs Podcast
Joe Rogan snow jobs. Keep flip-flopping one and two.
01:01:19
RICK JAMES
Oh, boy.
01:01:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
Crazy.
01:01:19
James Doyle
you got guys do a great you guys do a great job. I mean, and the the guests are the um the one that really, really hit hard for me was the ah was the Yeti episode. That was really good. There's a lot of value in there. And I'm kind of bummed I didn't get to get to get with those guys this year before the start.

New Snow Shovels & Equipment Discussion

01:01:34
James Doyle
We just said we were going to keep what we got going right now. But I definitely want to i want to get with them before You know, probably do it in the spring or the summertime. That way we got enough time to plan for it. Seems like they got a really good platform.
01:01:45
The SnowJobs Podcast
Everybody we've talked to likes it.
01:01:46
RICK JAMES
Yeah, yeah snow shovels
01:01:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
I don't know. I haven't, I haven't tried it, but everybody I've talked to and Jeremy's talked to the, all the guys in our crew that have it say great things. So gotta be pretty good. Any, anything else new with innovative snow, like any other new equipment or anything since we last talked to you?
01:02:03
James Doyle
oh New equipment, I mean,
01:02:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
Getting metal pluses yet.
01:02:09
James Doyle
not really. No, no metal pluses.
01:02:12
The SnowJobs Podcast
Didn't bite the bullet. right so arctic you stuff shuffle All right.
01:02:16
James Doyle
We got some new snow shovels. Yeah.
01:02:18
The SnowJobs Podcast
all right.
01:02:20
James Doyle
That's new snow shovels.
01:02:20
RICK JAMES
You still got the SSVs?
01:02:23
James Doyle
Yeah, yeah, we got three of those. um All the attachments, all the brine tanks, all the sp spreaders. um Yeah, I mean, The snow shovels, they just require that extra option.
01:02:35
James Doyle
It's the H-U-M-A-N-A-S's or however you spell humans.
01:02:38
RICK JAMES
Oh, that's say and the Anthony Mann reference I think it was.
01:02:38
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
01:02:38
The SnowJobs Podcast
The 1000s. ah
01:02:43
James Doyle
Yeah, you need the humans. So I mean, and and whatever. So we got a couple of new humans this year.

Snow Crew Reliability & Strategies

01:02:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah. How they're working out.
01:02:49
James Doyle
It's good. We got a couple that we thought were going to work out really good that, you know, after the first two one inch snow storms, it's no call, no show.
01:02:52
The SnowJobs Podcast
Good.
01:03:00
James Doyle
but
01:03:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
Really?
01:03:01
RICK JAMES
Oh, that's great.
01:03:01
James Doyle
It's to be expected. We offer everybody the same thing across the board. And just as far as expectations and compensation, we try to take care of everybody. But it's not for everybody.
01:03:12
James Doyle
It's tough work. Nobody wants to be out there at 2 o'clock in the morning.
01:03:13
RICK JAMES
Oh, yeah.
01:03:16
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah no i hear you um
01:03:17
RICK JAMES
Definitely.
01:03:18
The SnowJobs Podcast
I am very lucky, man.
01:03:18
RICK JAMES
I do.
01:03:19
The SnowJobs Podcast
I am very, very lucky. We have that crew of young dudes and they are absolute fucking ninjas. I just i don't even have to put the call out to all seven of them. One of them runs the rest of them.
01:03:31
The SnowJobs Podcast
So I put one call out to Brandon and I'm like, dude, do what you do for 30 a.m.
01:03:32
James Doyle
yeah that's ah that's unbeliev
01:03:38
The SnowJobs Podcast
Start. You know where you're going. And boom, I just show up and I look and they're already working and there's six or seven of them and they're just going like gangbusters.
01:03:49
James Doyle
And you know what it's been, and that's how that's how we are to the problem is I think the chaos has been a little bit for us that just the timing of these storms, you know we have routes and we have start times and we have split times we have everything all set but the problem is is every single storm this year, the first three or four, we've got these weird like we've gotten phone calls on a one, a two inch storm.
01:03:59
The SnowJobs Podcast
Mm hmm.
01:04:09
James Doyle
saying, hey, you guys didn't applaud our parking it a lot. It's like, no, actually, we did. If you check your cameras, we were done.
01:04:13
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, yeah.
01:04:15
RICK JAMES
It's snowed after.
01:04:16
James Doyle
We were done with our route and and we got another inch and a half of snow in an hour that was supposedly ah was supposedly already all done.
01:04:21
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh yeah.
01:04:21
RICK JAMES
Yep.
01:04:24
James Doyle
And this has happened three times in a road where I've had clients for seven plus years that have never called me and they're like, hey, man, what's going on? It's like the first three storms, you know, your parking lot was cleared by six a.m.
01:04:34
James Doyle
And we got another inch of snow in that hour. And now we're starting over the entire route. It's like basically the storms over like if it was over at 12 o'clock and you know the afternoon or 1 o'clock in the afternoon We'd still have a phase change to get there to clear the snow They just come in at 7 o'clock and they're like oh nobody came here yet.
01:04:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
Sure.
01:04:50
James Doyle
and It's like no we actually already were here And that's how three times in a row now, and it's just like it's it's it's very frustrating So I think a lot of these guys that you know they had it in their head that we were just gonna be like hey Completely well orchestrated.
01:04:52
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah. See all those piles.
01:04:54
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
01:05:06
James Doyle
It's like that doesn't happen
01:05:07
The SnowJobs Podcast
No.
01:05:07
RICK JAMES
No.
01:05:08
James Doyle
doesn't you know so they were expecting one thing and then we're like hey you got to go over here because now the medical center is opening and we got to get that place that place is more important on a Sunday morning when it's open seven days a week 24-7 and you know they're open opening for a shift change then the factory that doesn't open till Monday morning you guys don't need to be there that's where it's like now you got to jump in into fight-or-flight mode and say hey we got to alternate and change change direction here you know um
01:05:08
RICK JAMES
Okay.
01:05:18
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
01:05:25
RICK JAMES
All
01:05:31
The SnowJobs Podcast
Amen.
01:05:31
RICK JAMES
right.
01:05:31
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah. That's what we did the other morning for 30. They were there and it was still snowing like a mother and like, we're not going to be able to do final cleanup here. So they said, how about this? How about we go get breakfast and we wait a half an hour and then we just nailed the zeros again, because they had already done all the zero tolerances, all the, uh, the emergency service buildings and stuff.
01:05:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
They'd already done them. So there wasn't much on those at that point. So they, they went and got breakfast real quick and boom, they hit all the,
01:05:57
James Doyle
Jeremy, you hear that? We go to Plow and Steve, we're gonna go have breakfast halfway through the road.
01:05:59
RICK JAMES
Yeah, we're gonna get breakfast.
01:06:02
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh yeah, egg sandwiches, dude.
01:06:02
RICK JAMES
ah dude Oh, dude, just oh.
01:06:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
You gotta have something in the belly. Get out there.
01:06:07
RICK JAMES
Oh, man. Yeah, apparently I told.
01:06:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
Take care of those guys, man. You gotta take care of those guys.
01:06:11
RICK JAMES
I.
01:06:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
Whatever they need, the amount of headaches I don't have, thanks to those guys, I'm in.
01:06:13
James Doyle
Oh yeah.
01:06:16
James Doyle
Yep.
01:06:17
RICK JAMES
Dude, my guys' is last push, I mean, you know I don't know if it'll be in the video or not, but they apparently said i I wouldn't let them go eat or something. I'm like, what the where does that come from? like Jeremy won't let us go eat lunch.
01:06:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
You're a slave driver.
01:06:27
RICK JAMES
so like I never once said he couldn't eat.
01:06:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
I've heard that.
01:06:30
RICK JAMES
I'm just saying, we're going to keep going a little bit longer. He can eat when we're done here. so it was only But it was like, therere they were talking about 7 a.m.
01:06:33
The SnowJobs Podcast
I've heard that before from them.
01:06:37
RICK JAMES
They were talking about lunch at 7 a.m. when we were plotting. I'm like, guys, it's 7 o'clock.
01:06:41
The SnowJobs Podcast
They started at 5 PM the night before.
01:06:44
RICK JAMES
they They're fine.
01:06:46
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah They're fine.
01:06:46
RICK JAMES
I'll let them know when they can eat. They'll be all right.
01:06:50
The SnowJobs Podcast
They said they get one meal every 24 hours. that ah You do hear that.
01:06:52
RICK JAMES
may ah They always stop for cookies and donuts, so I always hear that on the old phone call. so But yeah, apparently I'm quite the...
01:06:59
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, you do. You definitely do hear that. Oh, man.
01:07:02
James Doyle
How's Jack doing?

Crew Camaraderie & Snow Records

01:07:04
RICK JAMES
Yeah, ah Jackie's the biggest one on the food thing. he's He was thinking that I wasn't letting him go eat, so Jackie's doing great, so don't worry about Jackie.
01:07:13
The SnowJobs Podcast
Jackie, oh my God.
01:07:14
RICK JAMES
Well, they're all great. They're, it was fun. They, they definitely love to break my balls as I do there. So, but no, it'll be a, it was, it's fun. So I don't know.
01:07:24
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, it's been a busy winter so far, that's for sure.
01:07:25
James Doyle
Good shit
01:07:28
The SnowJobs Podcast
Busier than we've had in years or something.
01:07:31
James Doyle
Yeah, we've we've had a lot.
01:07:32
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
01:07:32
James Doyle
I mean, the last snow, it was ah three, it's been three years since we had us, two or three years. I can't remember off the top of my head, but the last big storm that we got in December was, yeah, the last two years basically only been like the end of December, early January that we've gotten our first plowable event, maybe a couple of Salton.
01:07:49
The SnowJobs Podcast
Last year was January 8th. Yeah. Last year was January 8th.
01:07:52
James Doyle
Yeah.
01:07:53
The SnowJobs Podcast
Plowable. We had a couple salts before that, but January 8th was the first plow.
01:07:54
James Doyle
Yeah.
01:07:57
James Doyle
2020, 2019 to 2020 was the year that our first banger
01:08:03
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yes.
01:08:03
James Doyle
It was like a 16 inch snow storm.
01:08:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.
01:08:06
James Doyle
It was December 9th. I remember it because I was pissed.
01:08:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
01:08:09
James Doyle
We had a couple of big accounts first year and like we were spread thin. and we I had less anxiety then than I do now. and i just Maybe it's just years of doing it now. I just i don't know. but it was ah yeah We've had a lot, like like we were talking before the show, we've had a lot in December.
01:08:24
James Doyle
I i don't remember a year in my 15 years of plowing that we've had this much in December.
01:08:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
No, no. And November, the first one was in November, right?
01:08:33
James Doyle
Yeah.
01:08:33
The SnowJobs Podcast
The one that went from rain to five inches or six inches.
01:08:35
James Doyle
Yeah.
01:08:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
That was November.
01:08:38
James Doyle
Yeah, we only got like a dusting out of that. It tapered off as it went over the mountains and came into Western Connecticut. We didn't get much. It was just like a so like a seedy coating but yeah and so you guys are been getting good over there.
01:08:46
The SnowJobs Podcast
We got kicked. We got kicked square in the huevos.
01:08:51
James Doyle
A lot of the guys like I saw the guy ah Tom mags like they've been I'm like, where are you plowing all this snow?
01:08:56
The SnowJobs Podcast
He's up by Maddie young.
01:08:58
James Doyle
Yeah, yeah.
01:08:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
He's up there. Yeah.
01:08:59
James Doyle
Yeah. Some of the guys out and like
01:09:00
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah, they do. I mean, but that's the Adirondacks. that He's in the Adirondack region, like capital region that right there.
01:09:04
James Doyle
oh ah Okay.
01:09:07
The SnowJobs Podcast
So, I mean, they they do. They have about, if we're 40 inch average, I bet you Matt and that capital district, I bet you they're in 52 maybe, yearly average, 55, they're a little bit higher.
01:09:16
James Doyle
Yeah. Yeah, but that's like, that's what we're at. We're 45 to 50. I mean, last year we got 36, 37. We just hit our minimum. Like, you know, what we offer our clients, we offer them a little bit of a kickback, like very, very small marginal, um just to kind of keep that good faith.
01:09:32
James Doyle
Like if we're below 35 inches and they're like, Hey, didn't
01:09:32
The SnowJobs Podcast
Mm-hmm.
01:09:34
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
01:09:35
James Doyle
Did we get below 30? I was like, no. It was like, I'm sorry, but here's your total. It was 37.
01:09:40
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah. Well, hope that wasn't that's that happens.
01:09:41
RICK JAMES
yeah
01:09:41
James Doyle
It was like, yep.
01:09:41
RICK JAMES
Do you ever get you guys to shut the trailer doors, Doyle?
01:09:49
James Doyle
Trailer doors.
01:09:50
RICK JAMES
I know your snaps when the guy, your sidewalk guys must leave the trailer doors open. You're like a couple of snaps.
01:09:54
James Doyle
Oh, God, dude.
01:09:55
RICK JAMES
You're like, you ever get them trained to shut the doors?
01:09:58
James Doyle
I'm just like, yeah.
01:09:59
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh, they left it open with the snow on the ramp.
01:10:03
RICK JAMES
Well, just because people come by and steal your stuff, you know, inside your trailer.
01:10:03
James Doyle
Oh. it
01:10:07
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah
01:10:07
James Doyle
Yeah, I was just like, ah how? Like out of everybody there's, how does, how does seven guys out of one sidewalk rig, like how do they all walk by it and realize like the trailer doors are open? Like I just, I don't know. It's like the bathroom. It's like the bathroom door. I got a sign in yellow, English, different languages, everything, like everything you could imagine. It's in bright yellow on the inside of the door and the outside of the door. Like let's keep the bathrooms warm.
01:10:35
James Doyle
And let's keep them them dust free because they're connected to the shop. Like still get left open.
01:10:41
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
01:10:41
James Doyle
I don't know. I'm a stickler that just trying to keep it warm. Like, I don't know. I like to go to the bathroom in the warmth, you know, not have an inch of dust in there.
01:10:46
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
01:10:47
James Doyle
I just keep it clean.
01:10:47
RICK JAMES
yeah
01:10:48
James Doyle
You know, we have a lady here that works in the office that likes to use the bathroom too. I'm sure she has to use the bathroom at least once during the day. Just keep the door shut.
01:10:55
The SnowJobs Podcast
There you go.
01:10:56
James Doyle
I don't know.
01:10:56
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
01:10:57
RICK JAMES
Did I tell you, did I tell you, did I yeah, he was, his guy was out plowing and you know, it's cold here.
01:10:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
So simple.
01:11:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
No, really?
01:11:10
RICK JAMES
So they leave the trucks around and yeah, the guy, somebody got out of the bar, must've wanted to drive home. So yeah, he had ah his Duramax and trailer, the ramp was down and everything.
01:11:20
RICK JAMES
The guy apparently just, his guy comes back and he's like, uh, my pickup's gone. And so. So putt's actually, they actually found it like, I don't know, five days later, the ramp was still down.
01:11:30
RICK JAMES
He drove it down the road at the ramp of the trailer down. It was still hooked up. It was parked on the wrong side of the road. He got called from the, I think it was, uh, uh, the college cops, whatever called, called it in or whatever.
01:11:42
RICK JAMES
And yeah, so he got it back, but yeah.
01:11:44
The SnowJobs Podcast
You're not going to steal a cold truck. You know, that one's running over there.
01:11:46
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
01:11:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
So, I mean, Amen.
01:11:47
RICK JAMES
It was only like 10 blocks away from where, where the guy stole it. So he must've wanted to go home and ride home from the bar or something. So he took her for a joy ride. So that's kind of funny.
01:11:57
James Doyle
that's
01:11:57
The SnowJobs Podcast
Amen. Good for him. Did they catch the guy or they just got the truck?
01:12:01
RICK JAMES
No, this got picked truck trucking.
01:12:02
The SnowJobs Podcast
They didn't catch the guy. I was going to say so.
01:12:04
RICK JAMES
No.
01:12:04
The SnowJobs Podcast
All right. All's fair. Yeah. Everything's good.
01:12:08
RICK JAMES
Yeah. Yeah.
01:12:08
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah That is very funny.
01:12:09
RICK JAMES
I know it's funny though. Yeah. I could, I could just see the thing go down the road, the trailer with the ramp just bouncing down the road. So yeah. Yeah.
01:12:17
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh man. What else we got for episode 100?

Podcast Milestone Celebration & Gratitude

01:12:22
The SnowJobs Podcast
Anything else that you want to share Doyle?
01:12:23
James Doyle
That's. No, I mean. Yeah, I just happy to be a part of the gang and I was a little, uh, a little quiet this summer. I thought, I thought Steve was mad at me for a little while, but I was doing a little, I was doing a little focus on myself and, uh, little fitness journey.
01:12:35
The SnowJobs Podcast
No.
01:12:40
James Doyle
75 hard did, uh, a lot of stuff to kind of just get my mental clarity back here and, you know, a lot of stress and whatnot. And so kind of focused on my phase one.
01:12:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
Are you on phase two?
01:12:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
Did you do, you've completed it though, right? Phase one.
01:12:53
James Doyle
Yeah. 75 hearts done. Yeah. Yep.
01:12:55
The SnowJobs Podcast
Did you do it again?
01:12:56
James Doyle
it
01:12:56
The SnowJobs Podcast
Like Anthony has to keep repeating the same thing over and over and over and over again.
01:12:59
James Doyle
ah No, no, not.
01:13:01
RICK JAMES
It goes 75 hard phase one and phase two.
01:13:04
James Doyle
Yeah, phase one, phase two.
01:13:04
RICK JAMES
Yeah. yeah
01:13:05
James Doyle
they So there's like this whole program afterwards. But yeah, no, I I'm not on the repeat yet of 75 hard, but I will be.
01:13:11
The SnowJobs Podcast
No.
01:13:13
James Doyle
It's ah it's ah it's a good thing. But yeah, and also it's just ah was busy doing that stuff this year and just kind of really focusing and hunkering down on everything here. But no, what you guys have done is it's pretty it's pretty admirable, honestly, to go from go from one to 100 is It's pretty cool, it's pretty cool to see and just see the group of guys that have come together. you know We did the you know the the equip house, what was it last year?
01:13:39
James Doyle
you know I came out there and met with you guys and saw everybody and it's always good to meet up between the Simon shows and you know all the different events and just see the gang still still stick together. There's that core group of guys that are still there and it's it's good to still be a part of it and see the messages go back and forth and you know kind of just the the general community that you guys have built. A lot of people I think out in the snow industry that thought that there was nothing out there, that they were the only ones doing it. These guys out of Alaska, you know like one of the other episodes I just heard, it's just like it's crazy to see like the I don't know, just the community of guys that all think alike that are all the same from, you know, you're, you know, one guy in a truck in a snowblower up to, you know, the guy with, you know, 15 loaders on an Amazon site, you know, everybody kind of thinks the same, like you talked about on different levels and, you know, just different points of the path. And it's just, uh, it's good to see you guys have brought that many people together, you know, just with the same, same around the same mentality. It's, it's good to see. And, uh, yeah, happy to be a part of it school.
01:14:37
The SnowJobs Podcast
And Doyle got us started, episode one.
01:14:39
RICK JAMES
Yeah, right. Definitely.
01:14:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
Did you think we were going to 100 when you were doing episode one?
01:14:43
James Doyle
ah
01:14:47
James Doyle
No, man, I mean I figured it
01:14:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
Dude, if you listen to that now, it's fucking brutal. If you if you listen to that now, listen to that one tomorrow, it's fucking... I just listened to it last week. I'm like, my fucking God, how bad was that?
01:14:58
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
01:14:59
James Doyle
ah it's not it's not bad man Yeah, I think I think you guys did great for first episode with just like a platform and learning it all and I mean I
01:14:59
The SnowJobs Podcast
but ah
01:15:01
RICK JAMES
yeah
01:15:07
James Doyle
Now you guys have got it down pat, but it's, you know, I think you guys did great. I mean, all things considered, I listened to a lot of podcasts and I've seen some people butcher like, you know, crazy sound bites.
01:15:17
James Doyle
Like they'll be talking and then it just goes to like 70 seconds later into a conversation. It's like, where did the whole middle of that go? Like, you know, you guys do a great job.
01:15:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yeah.
01:15:25
James Doyle
No, you guys should be proud of yourselves. It's a great thing that you guys got going.
01:15:29
The SnowJobs Podcast
It's awesome. Uh, it's awesome that everybody's got behind it and everybody's bought into it and we'll never run out of guests. That's for sure. Cause everybody is still like, yeah, when, you know, whenever you need us, we're on, we're in, we're in, let us know.
01:15:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
So it's, it's been great, man. Everybody, we couldn't do it without all the guys out there listening and helping us out. Otherwise it'd just be me and Jeremy talking and that gets boring after a while.
01:15:48
RICK JAMES
i death
01:15:51
RICK JAMES
All right. All right.
01:15:53
The SnowJobs Podcast
even with Rick James, you know, I mean, I don't know if you know this, but people do know him.
01:16:05
The SnowJobs Podcast
I mean, Jeremy's not in his head.
01:16:05
RICK JAMES
idea yeah Yeah, definitely.
01:16:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
People, people do know him.
01:16:09
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh man. What else you got Jay? Anything else for James?
01:16:15
RICK JAMES
No, really. I'm just, uh, just glad he came back on and, um, I appreciate our friendship and kind of mean Doyle kicked it off. I don't know how many years ago on Instagram.
01:16:25
RICK JAMES
And we just, I don't know, it's been a good, good journey. And I'm like I say, I'm, I'm glad consider him one of my closest friends. He's great guy and he's running a great operation out there. So keep it up.
01:16:35
James Doyle
Yeah man, likewise, likewise.
01:16:36
The SnowJobs Podcast
Absolutely. Absolutely. Doyle got us started. That was, uh, that was huge for us because James is very comfortable, not just, you know, talking period, but talking about business and talking about his business.
01:16:48
The SnowJobs Podcast
He's very knowledgeable. And that episode one, I would not, even though I thought it was rough listening to it now that it went a lot better because James could carry it.
01:16:58
The SnowJobs Podcast
And we appreciate you on that because you definitely did. You carried it. You were,
01:17:02
RICK JAMES
Yeah.
01:17:03
The SnowJobs Podcast
You were good. You let us get our get our breath and get the butterflies out. And and that was we we greatly appreciate that. That was that was great.
01:17:10
RICK JAMES
There
01:17:10
The SnowJobs Podcast
And, you know, we're we're always indebted.
01:17:12
James Doyle
Yeah, keep running with it, man.
01:17:14
RICK JAMES
you go.
01:17:14
James Doyle
I expect to be on episode 1000, that's an expectation.
01:17:18
The SnowJobs Podcast

01:17:18
RICK JAMES

01:17:21
The SnowJobs Podcast

01:17:21
James Doyle

01:17:21
RICK JAMES
oh
01:17:23
James Doyle

01:17:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
That'd be well, 52 episodes a year.
01:17:23
RICK JAMES
Oh, if we get really... Yeah.
01:17:26
The SnowJobs Podcast
So that'd be, don't make me do math in a hurry right now.
01:17:31
RICK JAMES
yeah Well, if it kicks off you more, we'll just have to do more than one a week.
01:17:35
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh no.
01:17:35
RICK JAMES
Once you once you retire.
01:17:36
James Doyle
ah You'll be 71 Steve, it'll be great.
01:17:39
The SnowJobs Podcast
1000 divided by 52.
01:17:42
RICK JAMES
but yeah
01:17:43
The SnowJobs Podcast
It's 19 years.
01:17:43
RICK JAMES

01:17:44
The SnowJobs Podcast
Holy shit.
01:17:45
RICK JAMES
Yeah, I'll be dead before that.
01:17:47
The SnowJobs Podcast
I'm going to go out on a limb and say, I'm going to be dead before that.
01:17:49
RICK JAMES
I'll be dead before that.
01:17:51
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh my God.
01:17:52
James Doyle

01:17:52
The SnowJobs Podcast

01:18:56
The SnowJobs Podcast
Oh man. Yeah, we figured that'd be funny. Oh, we got to come up with some more funny stuff for shirts. That'd be good. Something to do with the weather guys. Something to jab at the weather guys.
01:19:06
The SnowJobs Podcast
They'll love that.
01:19:06
RICK JAMES
Yeah, for sure.

RICK JAMES
Yes.
01:19:23
The SnowJobs Podcast
Just put that on it.
01:19:25
James Doyle
Yeah, but you know what the one that they could say what they want to say but like the local guys here that what drives me nuts is like you'll look at like the local forecast and like listen and and and watch it and they're like
01:19:26
RICK JAMES
With that, what?
01:19:37
James Doyle
Yeah, well it's just gonna be a dusting to one inch and it's gonna be locally higher amounts. It's like, what does that mean?
01:19:42
The SnowJobs Podcast
yeah yeah so
01:19:44
James Doyle
What does that mean? And the whole entire state and the whole entire state of Connecticut says locally higher amounts.
01:19:45
The SnowJobs Podcast
ah yeah
01:19:45
RICK JAMES
but
01:19:50
James Doyle
It's like, I don't know, it's just like, it's a catch-all.
01:19:50
The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep. It means if you get higher amounts somewhere, you're local.
01:19:53
RICK JAMES

01:20:12
RICK JAMES

01:21:29

The SnowJobs Podcast
Yep.

and you know The business side of it kind of gets in the way sometimes and makes you you know makes you regret doing what you're doing. you know And you do have a passion for it. And so it's kind of hard when the business side gets in the middle of it. But you know at the end of the day, we're all we're all kids at heart. We all love the equipment. And we like going out and playing in the snow. And it's ah you know just don't give up on it. Keep keep going with it. it's The complainers and the Karens and the the wrong weathermen, they're all at the back of the storm once it's all over. And we're done. And we're all happy.
