Manchester United's Return to Form?

00:00:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello everyone and welcome back to the daily Manchester United podcasts. I'm your host for this evening Niall Hannigan and I'm joined once more by Tom Cairns. Tom, how are you getting on?
00:00:19
Tom Cairns
Hello, Niall. Hello everyone. Yes, it's been few days since our disappointing showing at Spurs, but the team seems to have digested everything from it now, and we hope for a return to form against Everton at the weekend at Goodson Park, which I don't have the greatest of hopes for.

Europa League Knockout Round Results

00:00:37
Tom Cairns
But away from Everton, it has been the conclusion of the preliminary knockout round of the Europa League, where we have now a better idea as to who our round of 16 opponents will be.
00:00:52
Tom Cairns
Now, on the back of what we've seen tonight, as far as results is concerned, Alcald Alpmaar had knocked out Galatasaray over two legs, and Real Sosdard comfortably getting through ahead of, I think it was Michelin that they faced.
00:01:06
Tom Cairns
in their Prenouille knockout tie. So it'll be one of those two teams.
00:01:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.

Injury Crisis at Manchester United

00:01:11
Tom Cairns
I think we have an idea as to who we would prefer to have Niall, given our record against Spanish sides in Europe, which isn't particularly great.
00:01:21
Tom Cairns
But at least, I'm glad to say that Galatasaray out of it because I think they would have been a bit of a foe to us. And I think they've been foes to a lot of English sides historically anyway.
00:01:32
Tom Cairns
So at least they're out of it.
00:01:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think it's a fair point. um I wouldn't have looked forward to a journey over there, to be honest. And yeah, with our form this season, I'm probably not looking forward to any of those games. But I think the the point you brought up with the Spanish sides and the Villarreal and the Sevilla games over the years have have kind of haunted our our past a bit when it comes to this competition. So um yeah, I think ah ah trip to Netherlands is probably something that that we would welcome.
00:02:05
Tom Cairns
Yeah, I would agree with that. I mean, I'll say Alkmaar. think the last time we played Alkmaar, I think the last time we played them was in a temporary ground. It was in the Europa League campaign of 2019-20, where I think we played them in, think it was in The Hague, instead of their traditional home stadium.
00:02:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, OK.
00:02:21
Tom Cairns
and part And the reason for it was because part their stand had collapsed. So it wasn't safe for fans to be watching the game from there.
00:02:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
OK.
00:02:30
Tom Cairns
So they moved our game with them away to a stadium in The Hague. um The game ended up goalless, so it was hardly memorable before that. But I think we'll get a chance to maybe do a bit better. But we are going to go into that whatever happens with an injury crisis, given key players like Ahmed is going to be out for a while.
00:02:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's disappointing. And I mean, it's it's even more disappointing considering the time of year and the the amount of pressure that's around

Manager's Response to Injuries

00:03:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
these games as well. You know, we have the cup competitions, particularly the Europa League, like we're speaking about this evening.
00:03:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we've also got a bit of pressure on in the league as well. You know, you know there's not, it is unrealistic that we get relegated, but in a way we're 15th and we're down to the bare bones in terms of the team kind of picks itself at the moment.
00:03:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we're not in a good run of form and the fixtures that are coming up as well, like we mentioned Everton at the weekend and there's there's a few more that are tough to come. You know, you're you're looking at them and you're it's not filling you with confidence in terms of actually being able to get over the line in them and start to pick up those points and get that momentum back.
00:03:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, yeah, the the injury timings of this isn't isn't ideal.

Opportunities for Young Players

00:03:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
I listened to Amram's press conference after the Spurs game. was just kind of interested to see what is what his demeanor was like. But he seemed quite calm, to be fair, in general.
00:03:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Was kind of saying that you know all the injuries kind of happened at once during the week and they kind of were dropping like flies throughout the week from training session to training session and said that all they can look all they can think about and look about is the is the next game and not to get too carried away about, you know,
00:04:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
what United is going to look like over the next few years. So, you know, ah think all we can do is kind of trust what the manager's doing and and trust that he's he's picking the right players from from the pool that he has.
00:04:24
Tom Cairns
And I would agree with that. If he is calm, then good on him because he's going to need to handle the situation as well as he has been given the monstrosities surrounding Manchester United at the moment. I mean, there's been a thing or two about the Glazers. I think Avron Glazer just resoundingly said no in the question too about whether they're going to be selling Manchester United or not. I mean, we can't really feel that surprised by it.
00:04:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:04:48
Tom Cairns
but um But in relation to... how we are going to really set up in the forthcoming games.

Importance of Europa League

00:04:56
Tom Cairns
I just want to see these youngsters get chance now, because if there's not, if this is not a chance to really see a lot of them get their opportunity on the pitch and getting a reasonable number of minutes, then there's not really going to be any other chance.
00:04:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:05:13
Tom Cairns
The biggest injury crisis we have had since 2016, when we had a lot of our first team unavailable due to injury, I think Anthony Martial got injured in the warm-up in our game when we were about to play Michelin in our ah second leg in the round of 32.
00:05:34
Tom Cairns
And we got through comfortably thanks to Marcus Rashford's brace, which was a phenomenal evening. So we're going to need a repeat of that when we go up against either Real Sociedad or Arsad Altmar.
00:05:49
Tom Cairns
Someone has got to really step up.
00:05:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and it's about what position, and you could probably probably name all of them, to be honest, in terms of a ah step up that's needed across the board. But, you know, going back to the episode that we did earlier on in the week where we kind of went through all those youngsters that were on the bench, you know, a lot of them have have a lot of pedigree, have come through the ranks as well in successful teams at United and have been teammates of players that are currently in the first team.

Balancing Cup and League Priorities

00:06:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
And like you said, look, there's there's no time like now to try it out because, know, yes, we're under pressure in terms of trying to get results, but that's always the case at United, and this year's kind of write-off in general, um and also it's not as if the players that are getting game time have been have been putting up unbelievable performances anyway, so um yeah, I think there's loads of reasons of why there should be young players being being played, and um yeah, the injury crisis is just one of them, I suppose, but Yeah, I suppose let's take a quick break there and we'll discuss a bit more about our um our chances in the Europa League.
00:07:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
So if we were doing this podcast probably 10, 15 years ago, Tom, it would have been a very sorry

Discovering New Talents in Europa and Conference Leagues

00:07:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
sorry for us to be actually saying that we're we're looking forward to Europa League game or that we're kind of eyeing up this competition as something that we can target. But it's where we find ourselves at the moment.
00:07:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
And... I'd be interested just to get your thoughts on what do you think of the competition in general? And do you think that this should be an area that we should be focusing on? Or do we need to kind of scrap all the competitions in terms of the cup competitions? Because we've won a couple of them and over the last couple of years and it hasn't worked out for us in the league.
00:08:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Where do you sit on it all?
00:08:19
Tom Cairns
I wouldn't abolish the competitions in all honesty, because I think there's a reason why they're there in the first place. And it's to you give the lower ranked sides a chance to be playing in Europe against oppositions that are similarly ranked to where they are. I mean, in the Premier League, we've seen sides like Brighton get their opportunity, Aston Villa as well.
00:08:39
Tom Cairns
I think Newcastle have had their opportunity in the Champions League. And a number of years ago, they were in the Europa League, weren't they? During the days of Alan Pardew. So I do like the competition. And what I really like about the Europa League, and not only the Europa League, but the Conference League as well, is you can find those hidden gems of sides or players that you wouldn't even think about or even heard a thing or two about them.
00:09:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:09:05
Tom Cairns
And they can just pull out all the stops. It's like when, i think it was Pellegrini, not Manuel Pellegrini, but Pellegrini who was playing for Boda Glimt. And they faced Jose Mourinho's Roma three seasons ago in the group stages of the Conference League.
00:09:22
Tom Cairns
They won 6-1. And Pellegrino, I think, got a hat-trick in that game, which I think made up Mourinho's mind that he wanted to sign him. Well, guess what? He did. And he went to Roma from there.
00:09:34
Tom Cairns
And that's one of the things I like about these competitions is just you see these individuals that come out of their shells a little bit. Mo Salah is another example when he was over at Basel in 2012-13 when Chelsea were playing in the Europa League in the knockout stages. I think they faced Basel in one of the ties.
00:09:54
Tom Cairns
Mo Salah was playing for Basel and I think he scored in that game at Stamford Bridge against them.

Europa League's Rising Prestige

00:09:59
Tom Cairns
And in the following season in the Champions League, he scored against them in both home and away matches in the group stages. And the following January, Chelsea signed him.
00:10:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:10:08
Tom Cairns
And that that was ah that was a wonderful story. But going back what were saying about the Europa League, I do like the competition. I do like the size they're in there as well. And I think European competition in general now, the competitiveness, I think, has improved, even though it may not seem like that in regards to the size that are winning the Champions League. I mean, you would look at Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Man City, Barcelona.
00:10:32
Tom Cairns
There's too many sides that could potentially win the Champions League each season anyway. But when it comes to Europa League, it gives the lower ranked sides better chance to actually succeed in Europe. And that's what I really like about it.
00:10:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, no, definitely. um And I think as well, you know, the... The introduction of the Conference League or kind of the the marketing around it, I suppose, has gotten bigger with with West Ham actually getting their trophy as well, which is great. And, you know, it it creates, yes, there's lots more games for the players, which can be tough, but it creates fascinating ties around Europe as well, like you touched upon. So, yeah, no, definitely in favour. I suppose from ah from a United's perspective, is there a ah sense that we're too good for the Europa League or that we shouldn't be there from a fan's perspective? Because...
00:11:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
I used to always think of Europa League when I was a child as like kind of the the second tier competition. And then now we seem to be um regular featured within it. I'm kind of missing out on those Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
00:11:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Is it something that you want to win or where does it sit within the the kind of ranking, I i suppose, for you?
00:11:38
Tom Cairns
If you asked me that question 15 years ago, Niall, I probably would say, ah do want to win it, but I wouldn't cry in a corner if we didn't. Because before, they changed the rule where if you won the Europa League, you get automatic qualifications to the Champions League.
00:11:54
Tom Cairns
It used to just be, you'd just be in the Europa League again.
00:11:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:11:58
Tom Cairns
But now, because there's a better prize on offer... it raises the hype of teams wanting to win the competition. Like Atalanta won it last year the Europa League against Bayer Leverkusen of old teams who were ridiculously good.
00:12:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
For nameless reason.
00:12:15
Tom Cairns
they They should have, yeah, phenomenal season they had. And yeah, I mean, I want to win it. And the reason why is because I think it improves the morale of the team and it helps Manchester United from a commercial point of view get them back on the map a little bit.
00:12:31
Tom Cairns
But that can really die away very, very quickly in a space of two or three seasons.
00:12:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely. i think for me, i think it's actually really important that that we try really go out and win this. um I think it's, you just look around the Premier League and there's so many teams that it's going to be very, very difficult to get Champions League football just by getting near the top of the table, whether that's top four, top five or whatever it may be.
00:12:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, every game that you're looking at with this current setup and United players, is looking like a tough game. um and those teams like the Villas and Newcastles and Nottingham Forest, you know, these teams are are only going to get better and going to continue to grow along with the top teams that are already there.
00:13:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
So i'm I'm really looking at the Europa League thinking this is our get out of jail free card, I suppose. And hopefully then we can kind of attract that type of player in the window in the summer. um so that they can play Champions League football and that that they can get used to Amarim's system in the summer as well and and that there's actually something to look forward to next year and yes we may we may be kind of out of our depth a bit if we did get get into Champions League football next year but yeah also you also never know as well with that new format.
00:13:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
You get fortunate with the games that you you get tied up with and and see how we get on. But yeah, um um'm I'm conscious that we've we've won kind of Carabao Cups and FA Cups over the last couple of years and it still hasn't improved the team at all. But I think this one's a bit different where if we were able to kind of get back that Champions League football, I think would be huge the club.
00:14:11
Tom Cairns
And if the club are looking to continue to cut costs, perhaps the prize of winning the Europa League and getting into the Champions League, you would think would be not the complete remedy, but at least it would kind of alleviate some of the problems that the club has had.
00:14:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:14:33
Tom Cairns
But by all means, it shouldn't really be a paper over the cracks. It should be a morale boost for the squad. And i really cant it really concerns me about who's going to really join Manio.
00:14:44
Tom Cairns
I said even though even if they were to win the Europa League and get into the Champions League, you have to remember where we've ended up in the season domestically.
00:14:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:14:52
Tom Cairns
We are about to finish in the bottom half of the table for the first time

Strategic Squad Changes

00:14:58
Tom Cairns
in 35 years. In our lifetimes.
00:15:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and well into the bottom half, bottom quarter of the table, possibly.
00:15:08
Tom Cairns
Yeah.
00:15:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
So it's um never really segmented the table like that before, but maybe this is the year to start. But yeah, it's it's not looking good. And like you said, we don't want it to paper over the cracks, but m I suppose that's that's all we're kind kind of able to look forward to at the moment from me and I to perspective.
00:15:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
But anyway, let's take another quick break here and back with the final segment just after this.

00:16:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I suppose what we'll discuss a bit about how we think that team might set up over the next couple of days. We we mentioned that we're kind of injury-ridden. Are you expecting a similar kind of 11 that went out against Spurs for the weekend and for the for the games to come?
00:16:25
Tom Cairns
I should think so, but I wouldn't mind seeing one or two young faces in that side.
00:16:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:16:32
Tom Cairns
Probably not in the centre-half role, because the centre-half role places are pretty much stacked up anyway, and Lindelof is the backup choice for Ivan Maguire, De Ligt, Yaro, or Mats Rowery, because we know Mats Rowery's been playing in that centre-half role at times.
00:16:47
Tom Cairns
So it comes down to what it is in midfield, really. Casemiro would expect to see starting.
00:16:56
Tom Cairns
alongside who was it that was alongside casimiro in the cdm role was it bruno well no bruno was in the camera just thinking the other defensive midfielder uh oh what yeah i think you're right yeah so because serxi was playing in the number 10 yeah and garnet was playing on the left and uh unless bruno was playing know hoyland was playing in the number nine
00:17:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bruno
00:17:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it was Bruno actually and they played Xerxes and Garnaccio ahead yeah the 10 as well yeah
00:17:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Highland.
00:17:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:17:26
Tom Cairns
I'm just thinking on the right-hand side, that would be...
00:17:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Dalla was right wing back.
00:17:31
Tom Cairns
He was right wing-back, and was just right attacking mid. It might have been Bruno who may have been shifted over to that side. um By the way, I want to see one or two youngsters.
00:17:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:17:42
Tom Cairns
In a game against Everton,
00:17:45
Tom Cairns
i i wouldn't be annoyed to see them getting minutes, because you need to provide options now. The United have got to really rebuild...
00:17:56
Tom Cairns
in their choice of first, well, going to be regulars because Diallo be out for a long time. Manu is going to be out for a long time.
00:18:06
Tom Cairns
Ugarte is to be out for a period of time. So you need to start rebuilding options from the academy players because otherwise, how exactly you trying to build options in the way that you're doing?
00:18:18
Tom Cairns
I don't know how often the teenagers have been training this week, but, surely they need to be given a lot more minutes and the only player that got the minutes was uh uh chidi ob who got the uh only like two minutes in the game against spurs which i thought was pathetic if you ask me so amram's got to learn from that and actually think to himself well if we're like two nil down or three nil down it's not going to do any harm by bringing youngsters on because
00:18:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:18:51
Tom Cairns
is got to he's got to play differently now. He's got to play a different tactical game compared to how did against Tottenham, where he just left the entire team on the pitch for far too long. And they were they were completely exhausted after that game.
00:19:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:19:06
Tom Cairns
And you don't want to keep playing the same 11 all the way through 90 minutes of football just because you don't have any options available. is But it's almost like being in Sunday league and you got no subs and you play the whole match, how exhausted would you feel at the end of it when the whole team is exhausted and the performance just goes out the window?
00:19:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, absolutely. And I suppose they're playing a bit like Sunday League as well. So I'd say they can definitely kind of attest to what that feels like. But yeah, I think you made a good point. I think the main area that I found, and there's a lot of areas to work on, but the main area over the last months is is midfield. And because we are playing with with two in there, with most teams playing three, we need someone that has energy and has legs to get around and if the option is Casemiro, then the person beside him needs to have a lot more legs to kind of make up for that as well.
00:19:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know if there's an opportunity for, for Kone to come in and and play at some stage, or even to get some time off the bench to kind of, uh, get his, his first kind of taste of first team football. Um, obviously you mentioned the, the injuries to Agarthe and and, uh,
00:20:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Also to Collier as well, I think is injured. So I don't think even he could come in um over the next while.

Integrating Young Players

00:20:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
So there is a bit of a gap there in midfield. um And with Mount long-term injury, you know, all those players could kind of play in those positions, but we really are struggling at the moment.
00:20:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So, yeah, I ah think it would be nice to see one of the the academy boys or one of the the young kind of signings come into that midfield area. um And I agree just to kind of freshen up a bit, I suppose, um maybe with, with OB getting another couple of games under his belt in terms of maybe subs appearances. um It seems that we're going to have to play with Circe and Hoyland from the start in most of these games, considering all the injuries we have. So, you know, kind of an ideal replacement for, for Hoyland, if he's playing in the nine is OB after 60, 65, 70 minutes and and see how he gets on. And,
00:21:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
create that bit of bit of panic, I suppose, for for opposition, not really knowing what to expect from him. And it's easier for for a striker to kind of come on, um you know, ah but with about 20 minutes to go, but also for a young player just to kind of stretch the defence a bit, run the channels and try and do a bit of hold-up play as well. ah it's just probably the place you can get the most impact. So I totally agree with you that um I can see a very similar team starting, but with I would like to see a bit more proactivity when it comes to the subs.
00:21:35
Tom Cairns
I couldn't agree more. I mean, given that we've got five subs available, it won't... If we're a goal up, then I would understand why you would keep the starters on.
00:21:47
Tom Cairns
But if the game starts to really fade away, that's his opportunity to just give these kids a chance. And even if they get a consolation goal, that that's that's great. Then at least they know that...
00:22:01
Tom Cairns
They've got the energy to do it and they're capable of doing it. I mean, what we've got to remember is some of these are like 18 and 19 year olds.
00:22:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:22:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:22:08
Tom Cairns
And we see Premier League teams fielding 18, 19 year olds on the pitch regularly enough from where we see. So i think there just needs to be a ah better, there just needs to be a better showing and more that we can take from it positively because we took away nothing from that game against Tottenham on Sunday.
00:22:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:22:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, absolutely. And there's no better time, like we mentioned earlier, about bringing them in now. The last few games of the season, get them, I suppose, blooded into the team, ready for the summer to kind of get a bit more time under Amarim and then get ready for the for the new season. And I suppose it's an opportunity for them as well to to see if they can get maybe a loan move, if that's something that they're ah they're looking to on the cards when when all the senior players come back. And yeah It's just to give that bit of energy in the squad because you can just see that there's a lack of confidence at the moment. there's Everyone's kind of second guessing what they're doing when it comes to actually um making decisions on the pitch. and Sometimes you just need that kind of and that fearlessness of youth, I suppose, to kind of just inject a bit of
00:23:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I suppose a bit of spark back into the team and we've seen that over the years with United with Rashford for example like you mentioned and that Europa League game you know really just scoring on every debut that he that he had you know we need a bit of spark like that back in the team again and just to give that feel good factor going into the end of the season
00:23:32
Tom Cairns
And I couldn't agree more. And that way, you've got something to take from the season anyhow, as opposed to just filled in the same players and achieve nothing.
00:23:41
Tom Cairns
you know you know ah United, for me, don't have anything to lose now.
00:23:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely
00:23:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
