Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello everyone and welcome back to the daily Manchester United. Welcome to Wildcard Wednesday where we talk little bit about everything and there's not really a script involved. but You might find out sooner or later anyway. My name's Kieran, I'm delighted to say I'm joined by Toluwa on this episode. Toluwa, how are you?
00:00:25
Toluwa Famuyide
Doing good. How about you, man? I'm doing i'm i'm excited about you know the recent form that United's been in. So always always a pleasure to talk.
00:00:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Duh. I feel like this has been, you know, a record that's on repeat. Oh, I'm getting really excited. And then it just shuns us in in the next game against Forest. I guarantee it. ah But we've got an international break, so it's it's nice. And I thought what we could do to kick off this wildcard Wednesday, a bit of positive news to start with, is talking about the 12 players that have been called up at senior level on this international break. Now, according to the Manchester United website, we've got 12 players that have been called up now.
00:01:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we have, as follows, for Portugal, we have Diogo Dallo and Bruno Fernandes. ah For the Netherlands, we have Matthias Delict for England. On loan, Marcus Rashford who joins up with the England squad. And it'll be interesting to see what Thomas Tuchel does with that squad. James Scanlon, who was on the bench for the Europa League quarter-final second-leg win against Real Sociedad, has been called up for Gibraltar as they're looking to open up their World Cup campaign against Montenegro and Czechia.
00:01:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Sweden have called up Viktor Lindelof. We have Argentina who have called up, ah sorry, Uruguay who have called up Manuel Agate against Argentina. Andre Onana has been called up for Cameroon. Masraoui has been called up as well.
00:01:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we can see them across the next few days. ah Starting today, if you can find it, Eswatini versus Cameroon. Onana has been called up four o'clock Greenwich meantime, if you can tune into it. vol doesn't tell you where you can tune in, but I'm sure you can find somewhere to tune into it.
00:01:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Toluwa, 12 players, one of them including Rasmus Hoyland, who got finally broke his duck and he's been rewarded with a call-up.
00:02:08
Toluwa Famuyide
Yeah, im I'm a fan of Rasmus Hoyland. I think finally deserved his goal. I know the last month, two months, um pretty much majority of the season, he's been lacking in form, struggling to get his foothold um on the game, trying to get um opportunities, ah connecting with his teammates. So i'm I'm excited that he's finally getting this, I guess, recognition that I feel like he's deserved since he's come into the club.
00:02:33
Toluwa Famuyide
Obviously, there's no excuse for poor form, but getting that goal, getting back into the Danish team, that should help his confidence. um I read something that he he said, you know, getting back into the Danish team is good for his mental to be around, you know, sort of like a brotherhood. Obviously, United is is his his family, his team that he's contracted to, but being around players that he's familiar with, that he knows the and of the culture and everything like that, I'm sure it'll help revitalize him as well.
00:02:58
Toluwa Famuyide
And getting a goal during the international break will also help.
00:03:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Very much so. And there's nothing, I said it on the last episode, that there's nothing worse for a striker than going through a really long goal duck where nothing seems to go into the back of the net. But, you know, he looked good in our in our last game and hopefully he can take that forward.
00:03:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
that game against Leicester into not only the international breaks, but also hopefully when we come back against Nottingham Forest on April 1st, hopefully the Jokers not out to play on April Fool's Day.
00:03:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hopefully he will be able to notch up a couple of goals and catch up ah in terms of trying to get some goalscoring form underneath him.
00:03:37
Toluwa Famuyide
Yeah.
00:03:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
i would say it's a bit of a surprise for Hoorland, considering it's taken a long time for him to find the score sheet. But clearly international manager feels that he's got the potential. He's shown enough.
00:03:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
to warrant that that place in the Denmark tide.
00:03:51
Toluwa Famuyide
Yeah, I think the quality is there. um The potential is certainly there with Hoyland. We see that his type of profile, he's very quick. yeah um He likes to beat his man. He's not really the best at hold up. I know that he's been tasked to do that recently under the system.
00:04:05
Toluwa Famuyide
But when he's through on goal, he's most more likely than not he's lethal. um And I feel like that kind of plays a part in him getting into the national team as well. The profile of strikers that Denmark has minus OB, he's a little young, but the profile of strikers that they have isn't really great.
00:04:21
Toluwa Famuyide
I feel like Hoyland is their best option, no matter what form that he's in. And to be in a situation like that, I'm sure Hoyland is buzzing because he knows that, you know, obviously performances need to be good, but he can get into that side and, and, and prove something.
00:04:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and good to see Lindelof as well. I mean, um he's been called up for Sweden in the ah two friendlies that Sweden have over this international break. i you know He's made more than 180 appearances for Manchester United now. He's been stalwart and hasn't been used a lot under Amerim. Now that we've got a bit of a centre-back injury shortage of players at the back there, he's sort of being drafted in.
00:04:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think he's done too badly in the cameos that he's had, though.
00:05:02
Toluwa Famuyide
Yeah, I mean, Lindelof is one of those guys that has always been solid, hasn't really always shown um the fullest potential, gone to the fullest of his potential, I should say.
00:05:13
Toluwa Famuyide
But he's always there. He's always readily available. If he's not injured, he's ready to fight for the badge. I think he's another one like Hoyland where it's like the quality that Sweden have at the back... ah throughout the European leagues, throughout continental leagues, I feel like Lindelof always will get a place in that Swedish side as well because of his experience, you know, the kind of pedigree of club that he's been at.
00:05:34
Toluwa Famuyide
But like you said, he hasn't played bad in the games that he's been thrown into. I'm just hoping he can stay fit during this international break because like you said, we're really struggling. Heaven just got another injury.
00:05:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:05:45
Toluwa Famuyide
um You know, adding him to the injury list is is is bad because number one, we don't want to rely on somebody like him, but he's been playing well. And if you play well, you know, the age doesn't really matter. So we really need, you know, as many bodies as possible going into the end of the season.
00:05:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and we'll say as well that Denmark have the most amount of United players called up. It's three with Portugal. i so Second there with two. But I mean, Bruno Fernandes must be the first team first player on that team sheet, apart from a certain man who wear a number seven for Portugal.
00:06:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, he's been phenomenal in the last few games, hasn't he?
00:06:20
Toluwa Famuyide
Yeah, Bruno Fernandes is just proving once again why he is Man Utd's best player. um Technically gifted, such a great leader. I know there's been a lot of talk about his effectiveness as a captain, but...
00:06:35
Toluwa Famuyide
Looking at the rest of the squad, I feel like he's doing a great job kind of pulling everybody together. Yes, he's a bit of a pest to the other team, but we want that as United fans. We want him to be annoying and to get under the skin. And I mean, look at the quality of goals that he's scoring.
00:06:49
Toluwa Famuyide
It feels like he's been unleashed again, like kind of how he was when he first joined the club. He was just so free scoring. He was really picking... um you know opportunities out for his teammates. He was getting into the right positions to score. So I'm glad to see him back in this in this form. Glad to see that everybody's definitely giving him recognition because when Bruno's off, everybody gives it to him. They tell him how bad he is. They tell him that he's not good enough to wear the shirt.
00:07:12
Toluwa Famuyide
But when he's on, it's like, well, look at what we're watching. A masterpiece.
00:07:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, Captain Fantastic, I think was ah was a phrase that we used multiple times over the last couple of days. Just a quick word, though, that if you are a football manager aficionado or a fee EAFC, I should say, aficionado, you're always looking for those slightly obscure nationalities to be amongst your team. And James Scanlon being called up for Gibraltar, hoping to add to his caps for Gibraltar.
00:07:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, you can just say we've got a Gibraltarian player in our lineup, probably one of the best Gibraltarian players ever, just not to be big headed or anything, but wishing James all the best and wishing the 11 other senior players all the best.
00:07:51
Toluwa Famuyide
Absolutely, absolutely.
00:07:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
So there we have it. When we come back, things get a little bit sour in the next two parts of this episode. So we thought we'd start it light. When we come back, there might be some moaning to contend with, but join us after this.
00:08:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:08:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we've had the news today being reported by BBC Sports that Christian Eriksen is now expecting to leave Manchester United this summer and doesn't anticipate signing for another Premier League club. The 33-year-old Dane midfielder joined United on a free transfer, of course, in July 2022, where he had been at Brentford previously, following resuming his footballing career following a cardiac arrest during Euro 2020.
00:09:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ericsson's played 66 matches in the Premier League for Manchester United, ah but though this season he's had only 16 top flight appearances, his contract expires this summer and he says there's not been any discussions over a new deal. According to BBC Sports, he said, I haven't heard anything from the club and therefore I assume the collaboration will stop.
00:09:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's how I interpret it. I'm preparing to find something new. I am fine with that. Where it will be, I haven't decided yet. The intention is not to stay in England. I'm not going to the USA. Sorry, Toluwa.
00:09:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're not going that far. We would like to stay in Europe, but it's too early to go home to Denmark. I feel like I have some good years left abroad. Toluwa, your reaction to that? Christian Eriksen, who's been a pretty good Premier League player for the last few years.
00:10:10
Toluwa Famuyide
Absolutely. um I'm appreciative of Erickson and especially him coming into the club and helping us do kind of a tough period, kind of filling in position at midfield. I think it's time for him to go like a numerous amount of players in the in the club.
00:10:23
Toluwa Famuyide
Obviously, his age plays a huge factor into it. On his day, Erickson can still create moments of magic, but... You know, we've seen too many times, especially this season, him paired with Casimiro. It's just a recipe for disaster. And I feel like he doesn't fit in really with any of our other midfielders consistently enough for him to warrant a new contract.
00:10:42
Toluwa Famuyide
Not to say he isn't a fantastic player. I was going to say ah feel like the USA would have been a great move for him at this stage in his career. But he he pretty much killed that off pretty quickly.
00:10:54
Toluwa Famuyide
ah I feel like for him moving to another club in Europe, that's really interesting, though, because my first thought was a reunion with Ajax. I feel like that would be perfect. I feel like that would fit him you know really well in the twilight of his career. He's about to kind of bow out and in terms of the European grand stage.
00:11:12
Toluwa Famuyide
And it'd be great to go back to Ajax and help them kind of revitalize themselves. I know this season they've kind of bounced back, um but it'd be great to see him in an Ajax shirt for sure.
00:11:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
For sure. And obviously he can't go back to Italy. he can't play in Serie A due to the ah rules in sort of Italian sport. that He can't play with the pace. I think it is the pacemaker that he has that he's got.
00:11:32
Toluwa Famuyide
Yeah. Yeah.
00:11:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
So he's not allowed to play in Italy full stop in the Italian league.
00:11:37
Toluwa Famuyide
yeah
00:11:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that rules out any return to Inter. He says it's too home too early to go home to Denmark. He's talking about the Odense BK side where he was part under-19s in 2008 and 2009. Wow, that's a That's quite some time ago.
00:11:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
But obviously, you've got to start picking out 140 caps for Denmark. I think it's 43 goals he has a top flight international level. He scored all of his goals for Manchester United in either Europa League or the League Cup. He scored four goals.
00:12:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
in 27 appearances in all competitions for assists as well. I think as well, you're right. I think it's time. It's the right time to Ericsson, to him to find a new challenge. But I'll take nothing away from the fact that, you know, he was pronounced medically dead for a few minutes in in Euro 2020, resuscitated.
00:12:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
resuscitated and then came back to the premier we came back to the Premier League with Brentford, first of all, and then to Manchester United. And to be honest with you, anywhere he goes from Euro 2020, I think he can consider a win.
00:12:39
Toluwa Famuyide
Yeah, absolutely. I remember watching that game live and just feeling in my in my living room, feeling the atmosphere, feeling the weight of the situation and seeing that, you know, this can happen to any football or anybody, you know.
00:12:53
Toluwa Famuyide
And for him to come back in the way that he did, Brentford, as you said, and then joining Manchester United, I feel like it's unheard of, especially in a situation like that where he is pronounced dead and he comes back and takes him this long process to get back into a mode where he can play football again and he can run for long periods of time. There were a lot of times where he was playing for us and I'm thinking to myself, like how is this guy doing this?
00:13:17
Toluwa Famuyide
Like he's able to run 90 minutes, you know, here and there. And I can't even run 10 for the most part. You know, like it's just one of the wonders of the world where you see these athletes doing things that are just so unthinkable to the regular human being. You know I mean? So,
00:13:35
Toluwa Famuyide
Huge testament to Christian Eriksson. I wish we could get somebody like him in terms of a replacement, similar type of profile, just with a little bit more physicality, little more vibrancy, because obviously the game is changing.
00:13:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:13:47
Toluwa Famuyide
I feel like Eriksson five, 10 years ago was the perfect model for the Premier League um in terms of an attacking midfielder. But now the game is way too physical. for the likes of him. um But I'm hoping we can get somebody with his brain, with his mentality, with his, you know, just, he's a great technician on the pitch. I just want somebody like that.
00:14:06
Toluwa Famuyide
Hopefully we can replace Erickson properly.
00:14:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, fingers crossed. I mean, yeah, he's he's he's been a great player. I mean, let's face it, he had his best time at Tottenham where he made 305 appearances for Tottenham, scored 69 times and assisted 88 times. I mean, that's the player we wanted. That's the Ericsson that was just amazing to watch.
00:14:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
And yeah, I don't think he ever had the the mountains of pace that maybe was just lacking from his game. But certainly when he's playing for Tottenham, he more than made up for it. He is technically such a good player.
00:14:36
Toluwa Famuyide
Yeah.
00:14:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Was never the quickest player and I think has slowed down as well, which is to be expected. He's in his early 30s. He's going to start physically declining. That being said, though, take nothing away. 303 Premier League appearances. Could still add to that towards the end of this season. So far, 54 goals and 80 assists.
00:14:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, just just a ah great player, I think.
00:14:58
Toluwa Famuyide
Yeah, for sure. Absolutely.
00:15:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
And ah Champions League as well, 53 appearances, although we won't be making any more of those. But Europa League, 54 appearances, 10 goals. You know, could add to that towards the end there. It'll be interesting to see where he goes. And I think, Toluwa, I speak for you and I, will keep a keen eye on where he does choose to go in the summer.
00:15:20
Toluwa Famuyide
Absolutely.
00:15:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Any predictions before we move on? where Where do you think he will end up?
00:15:26
Toluwa Famuyide
Other than Ajax, which I mean, that would be a strong possibility. I could see him maybe moving to Spain. feel like mid table Spanish team could definitely use his services. ah A team like maybe Girona, maybe Betis.
00:15:41
Toluwa Famuyide
I know that Betis are kind of on the up now that Anthony is there, but I feel like that probably fit him. Just this the style of play, obviously, like you said, his pace is significantly lower than what it was um a few years ago.
00:15:55
Toluwa Famuyide
So I feel like a slower league would help. And Italy is probably the one that comes to mind the most, but obviously that's checked off the list. So my first guess would be Ajax for sure.
00:16:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
So there you go then. You've heard it here first. It's probably Ajax, says Tolua. We'll watch on with that Christian Eriksen. But if if this will be the end of the road, Christian, it's been an honour to have you play for a club and play in the badge and hope hope you find the the club you want in the summer.
00:16:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll be back then after this short break. And when we do, we talk about rising costs, cutting costs and mixed messages from the Manchester United board. We'll be back after this.

This also coming from BBC Sports to round off our episode today. A Manchester United fan group says that the season ticket price rises faced by some of the club's older supporters are, quote, a total risk disgrace, unquote. ah United announced on Monday that most prices will increase by about 5% for the third successive year with a price freeze for under-16s, but some senior citizens face it bigger hikes.
00:17:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
According to BBC Sports, a 50% discount for some of those fans has been halved to an across-the-board 25%. which will now attract the state age pension age of 66 fan group. The 1958 says that effectively equates to a 57% increase for the club's quote, most loyal generational fans who have supported the club for decades. Unquote.
00:17:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
It said in a statement, this is the first phase of reducing the amount of season ticket holders. We've always campaigned. The club are trying to marginalize match going fans, cutting the 50% OAP concession to 25% for those who had it is a total disgrace.
00:18:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
The Manchester United Supporters Trust, the MUST, said it would seek urgent discussions with the club and wanted any reduction in senior discount to be phased in more over than one season.
00:18:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
They say must the effect of this policy change is big price hikes for older fans and it is no surprise they now have that they now have been announced that they're causing such huge concern.
00:18:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
United implemented a number of cost-casting measures, as we all know, in recent times, with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe saying that these have been necessary to put Manchester United back on stable footing. Manchester United, according to BBC Sport, consulted with the Fans Advisory Board, with their Fans Advisory Board, and said season ticket prices remain lower than a decade ago when adjusted for inflation and are comparable with the other clubs in North West England, with prices frozen for 11 consecutive seasons now. up to 2022.
00:18:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, this is ah a pretty interesting way to do it. Concessions are always going to be a hard and fast rule. You treat your senior citizens well. Although, if you're Manchester United, you take all of those that money away from your former players and ageing players.
00:19:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, Toluwa, it's contentious. We've got cost-cutting going on at Manchester United. We've got prices rising for season tickets. I mean, ah we're not quite Arsenal yet, but we're like going that way, aren't we?
00:19:24
Toluwa Famuyide
Yeah, it's it's a bit disappointing just because of everything happening on the pitch. You know, you want to you don't want to compile it with more disappointment off the pitch. And it's kind of a disgrace, I agree, um because you are kind of punishing those most loyal fan you know bases, you know, the ones that have supported the club through many different ups and downs, not just the one we're facing right now. yeah.
00:19:50
Toluwa Famuyide
it It's is disappointing, but it's expected, especially after the news of all the cost cutting and you know stopping kind of the pension that was given to those former players. It's very disappointing to see the club go down this way.
00:20:03
Toluwa Famuyide
I can understand from a business standpoint why the club has taken this measure, especially with the fact that, you know, It is difficult to manage the increasing ah prices and and like kind of inflation that's going on with the world in general.
00:20:19
Toluwa Famuyide
But obviously, when running a football club, you're trying to always stay in the green. You're always trying to make profit. You're always trying to you know, continue to build the club financially and as well as on the pitch. I get it to that degree. But when you start to impact the people that matter the most, I understand that you have your business execs, you have your CEOs, you have all these top wigs, these big wigs, but the fans matter the most. Without the fans, there is no Manchester United.
00:20:43
Toluwa Famuyide
There's no going to, there's no atmosphere at the club. no Old Trafford. There's no none of that. You can build all of these things, but if no one comes to the stadium, then what's the point? If you're limiting the amount of people that are able to come and enjoy, then you're kind of limiting yourself financially as well. I feel like the club are thinking in a short term position, a long term that's not going to go over well. Not just with, you know, fans that have been there for a long time, but new and prospective fans that want to come and see a game for the first time, but they're asked to pay pretty penny.
00:21:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and and this won't be the last we hear of this. I think the supporters trust will will take action and meet with the board, meet with the executives as much as possible to prevent this from happening.
00:21:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Whether they'll be successful, obviously, we wish them all the best in in making sure that doesn't go up too much.
00:21:29
Toluwa Famuyide
Yeah.
00:21:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think, you know, in my opinion, and I have to explicitly state that this is my opinion, I don't think the board are too worried about you know pricing out loyal fans because they're probably...
00:21:39
Toluwa Famuyide
yeah
00:21:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm not familiar with the waiting list for season tickets, but because Manchester United is a global club, people will travel from all four corners of the world to watch Manchester United, to watch the Red Devils play at Old Trafford.
00:21:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
And so by raising those prices... they might be pricing out and they are pricing out loyal fans who have had a season ticket for multiple years.
00:22:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
But there are people on that waiting list who would relish the fact of having a Manchester United season ticket. And I think the club is playing on that. that there will always be people coming into the club.
00:22:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
They will always fill up Old Trafford to 78,000, you know, easy as that. But there's only a certain point where fans can be pushed before they start to push back. We've already seen protests outside the stadium. We've already seen walkouts as well of Old Trafford over the last couple of years, all involving those cost-cutting measures and all involving the rising ticket prices. And yeah, they might be...
00:22:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah you know, in line with inflation. But the simple economic factor is that wages haven't been rising as far as and as fast as inflation. So you can't say, oh, it's OK, we're in line with inflation. Yeah, but wages still are behind inflation. So that doesn't work.
00:22:57
Toluwa Famuyide
Yeah.
00:22:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, for the for for big businessmen, they've missed the mark here, I think.

Yeah. Absolutely. um I agree with you 100%, especially on the aspect that, yeah, there will be fans from all over the world that will still, no matter what, want to come and see a game at Old Trafford, buy those season tickets and and make sure that they're in line with that.
00:23:15
Toluwa Famuyide
It's just disappointing as a fan, though, still to know that. There are certain sections of the fan base that are getting priced out or there are certain parts of the fan base that aren't having their voice heard because we're united.
00:23:27
Toluwa Famuyide
Quite simply put, we're supposed to be a united fan base, but the past 10 years have completely divided us. um And I feel like you're right. You know, the board don't really care. about those most loyal ones, as long as money is coming in, as long as they're filling their pockets, that's the most important thing.
00:23:42
Toluwa Famuyide
It's just disappointing. um i really I reiterate that because I've never been to Old Trafford, and obviously a dream of mine would be to go and watch United at play, you know, no matter the competition, just go there and feel the atmosphere.
00:23:55
Toluwa Famuyide
And I feel like the most important thing about the atmosphere is the locals, the ones that come, the ones that know the club inside and out. It's great to have fans from all over the world to show how diverse the club is, but there's nothing like home. You know what I mean? So that atmosphere, that side of it, I feel like they are missing the mark.
00:24:11
Toluwa Famuyide
They're not really understanding the culture of the club. They're just trying to get the club back into the green, which Like I said, from a business standpoint, I understand. But this is this is more than just a business. This is a football club. This is an entity. This is a lot of people's, you know, ah way of living. This is how they survive.
00:24:29
Toluwa Famuyide
So it's just ah it's just, like I said, it's disappointing. and and

Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:24:33
Toluwa Famuyide
But like you said, it's most likely going to keep going. There's going to be more cost-cutting measures. There's going be more things that we don't agree with as fans. But I don't know. What can we do except protest to to deaf ears, it seems like.
00:24:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, let's see what happens. say What I will say and is ah quite a frank warning to those in the higher-ups. If you price out the Stretford end, you will lose the heart of the fans. You'll lose the heart of the club and and no one will be singing anymore.
00:24:58
Toluwa Famuyide
Absolutely. Yeah.
00:25:01
