Power of Perseverance
00:00:23
Speaker
Back again, back again, bigger talks, life topics, life talks with Amina and myself.
00:00:29
Speaker
What's going down?
00:00:33
Speaker
What are you thinking?
00:00:34
Speaker
We got a new episode.
00:00:35
Speaker
What are we talking about?
00:00:36
Speaker
We're talking about, hi guys, by the way, it's me.
00:00:40
Speaker
Yes, we're talking about the power of never giving up.
00:00:44
Speaker
The power of never giving up.
00:00:46
Speaker
Never, ever give up.
00:00:48
Speaker
Have you ever given up on something?
00:00:56
Speaker
I don't think I've never given up on something I was passionate about.
00:01:00
Speaker
Maybe something not working out.
00:01:03
Speaker
Like, all right, cool.
00:01:05
Speaker
There's no point of just trying to keep giving energy and life and light to this source of this thing because it's not worth it, you know?
00:01:14
Speaker
So I don't think anything I'm passionate about, no, I've never given up on.
00:01:20
Speaker
I can't say the same.
00:01:22
Speaker
I've given up on something I was extremely passionate about.
00:01:25
Speaker
And I had a... Well, this depends on giving up and quitting.
00:01:30
Speaker
Is there a difference?
00:01:33
Speaker
I think there... Maybe quitting is not the word.
00:01:38
Speaker
Maybe there is a difference.
00:01:40
Speaker
Because I feel like giving up...
00:01:43
Speaker
has a connotation to it, right?
Letting Go vs. Giving Up
00:01:45
Speaker
Like negative, like, oh, you gave up, you quit, bro, you gave up.
00:01:49
Speaker
I don't really necessarily believe that.
00:01:52
Speaker
Like, you can give up on helping someone that you love and care about and just not helping themselves.
00:02:00
Speaker
I think there's a difference between giving up and letting go.
00:02:06
Speaker
That's what I feel like.
00:02:07
Speaker
If you're in a situation where you let someone go, that's different than quitting or giving up.
00:02:13
Speaker
I think, like you said, quitting or giving up does have a negative connotation to it, but letting go, that's different.
00:02:22
Speaker
Now, I'm stating that I gave up on something, like I quit.
00:02:27
Speaker
Okay, that's better.
00:02:30
Speaker
Because I was thinking about basketball.
00:02:31
Speaker
Basketball, I was passionate about.
00:02:33
Speaker
I didn't really give up on it.
00:02:35
Speaker
It didn't make sense in my world.
00:02:37
Speaker
It didn't make sense for my life.
00:02:39
Speaker
It was nothing giving me energy or light to say, this is what I'm supposed to be doing.
00:02:47
Speaker
Maybe if I had different support or resources around, maybe it would have worked.
00:02:52
Speaker
But in that moment, in that time of my life, it didn't work.
00:02:56
Speaker
And I don't believe in forcing things.
00:02:58
Speaker
You know what I'm saying?
00:02:59
Speaker
You can't force something that's just not there.
00:03:01
Speaker
It's like, well, how do you know it's not there if you didn't give up?
00:03:04
Speaker
It's like, you just know.
00:03:08
Speaker
And I think I see friends and acquaintance and people in general, especially in sports, like,
00:03:16
Speaker
I ain't giving up, man.
00:03:16
Speaker
I'm going to get another shot.
00:03:17
Speaker
And then keep going down that path.
00:03:19
Speaker
It's not leading anywhere.
00:03:21
Speaker
You just dig a deeper hole.
00:03:22
Speaker
Like, bro, you 32.
00:03:24
Speaker
You still trying to, you have hoop dreams and football
Ego and Acceptance of Reality
00:03:27
Speaker
Like, that's great.
00:03:28
Speaker
But when are you going to start letting go and see the reality of, okay, I have to do something different.
00:03:33
Speaker
I have to learn a different profession.
00:03:36
Speaker
You know, the person I wasn't here that, no, man, I ain't giving up.
00:03:39
Speaker
You know, you can make it.
00:03:40
Speaker
And I'm like, yes.
00:03:41
Speaker
But you still have to be real with yourself.
00:03:46
Speaker
But how long will you stay in that phase of I'm not giving up, I'm not giving up.
00:03:50
Speaker
Because then your ego is getting involved.
00:03:53
Speaker
And you're not really checking yourself.
00:03:55
Speaker
Your ego is checking you, telling you you need to continue to do this journey or this process.
00:03:59
Speaker
You're not getting anywhere.
00:04:01
Speaker
There's no results.
00:04:02
Speaker
You just keep waiting for something to happen like, no, it's over.
00:04:06
Speaker
And it's okay that it's over.
00:04:10
Speaker
People don't want to hear that though.
00:04:12
Speaker
You know, like, um, like you said, when your ego is involved in your life, there are a ton of things that you find yourself doing that you ain't got no business doing.
00:04:25
Speaker
you consume in it and you find yourself forcing situations that you, if it were meant for you, it wouldn't be that hard.
00:04:36
Speaker
And that's what I had to understand because I'm the type of person that would put my mind to something and keep going until it runs me into the ground.
00:04:46
Speaker
And I look back and I'm like, you know, you could have let it go when you knew you should have let it go.
00:04:52
Speaker
And I didn't, and I punished.
00:04:54
Speaker
Why didn't you think you let it go?
00:05:00
Speaker
I would say the thing that I've let go of certain things and I've given up on certain things, as far as the business that I ran.
00:05:10
Speaker
I let that go because I physically had no more funds, like capitalism, or I didn't have any capital to put back in it.
00:05:21
Speaker
I can't keep hooking everybody up every year.
00:05:25
Speaker
And then I end up on the losing end just to say, oh, I have a studio.
00:05:29
Speaker
But my ego was involved.
00:05:31
Speaker
I was like, no, everyone knows you have a studio.
00:05:34
Speaker
You have to run your studio.
00:05:36
Speaker
Where it's like when I let it go, nobody hated me, which I thought, you know, in my mind.
00:05:42
Speaker
Yeah, and I think there's one of two things.
00:05:46
Speaker
Really listen to this.
00:05:47
Speaker
It's very simple and you'll
Growth Through Letting Go
00:05:51
Speaker
When you let go of something, you've been spending your life or your energy, most of your energy and time into doing or whatever.
00:05:59
Speaker
And you let it go, you grow.
00:06:01
Speaker
The universe brings you something different in you that's available and ready for you to lock into it.
00:06:08
Speaker
So number two, the reason people don't let go and people are not giving up on something they believe in cold heartily is because people are afraid to grow in a different way.
00:06:20
Speaker
right and learn so it's like i want to be this ball player all day all day but i don't want to learn how to write a check or run a business or be not an athlete but a human being because there is a challenge with i can't say most athletes but some athletes where their identity
00:06:53
Speaker
I can exist in the world.
00:06:54
Speaker
So I got to find ways.
00:06:56
Speaker
Maybe I'll go coach basketball.
00:06:57
Speaker
Maybe I'll go try to play overseas or try to find on a pickup team right away.
00:07:02
Speaker
Because I have to keep that in my aura.
00:07:04
Speaker
Because if not, I'm not who I am.
00:07:07
Speaker
But you were never that person in the first place.
00:07:09
Speaker
That was just part of something you did.
00:07:12
Speaker
What you do is not who you are.
00:07:14
Speaker
You know what I'm saying?
00:07:17
Speaker
What you do is not who you are.
00:07:18
Speaker
So I met a guy a year ago and he asked me,
00:07:22
Speaker
He said, who are you?
00:07:26
Speaker
And so I gave him a lot of intangible things.
00:07:28
Speaker
I said, I'm independent, I'm focused, I'm driven, I'm loving, phenomenal.
00:07:34
Speaker
I would just name his stuff like strong, level, all these things.
00:07:39
Speaker
But he said, you know what's funny?
00:07:41
Speaker
Most, 90% of the people I ask that question to, they say, I'm a CEO of a company, I'm a father, I'm a husband.
00:07:50
Speaker
So then he said, oh, that's great.
00:07:52
Speaker
Now, what happens if all those things are taken from you?
00:07:57
Speaker
So people place their identity based on their profession.
00:08:02
Speaker
And your profession is not who you are.
00:08:05
Speaker
But you don't know that because you've been in it for so long.
00:08:09
Speaker
So, okay, yes, we're African American, we're black, but that's not who we are.
00:08:12
Speaker
We're human beings before we're anything.
00:08:16
Speaker
No, no, no, no, no.
00:08:17
Speaker
You grew up this way.
00:08:17
Speaker
You're this, you're that.
00:08:19
Speaker
I'm more than that.
00:08:21
Speaker
But we don't know that because we're being, you got a birth certificate.
00:08:24
Speaker
You were born here.
00:08:25
Speaker
This is your parents.
00:08:26
Speaker
This is their religion.
00:08:28
Speaker
So you're going to stop becoming these labels because I'm this.
00:08:31
Speaker
And I was like, no.
00:08:33
Speaker
A guy named Frank Crosby.
Identity Beyond Labels
00:08:35
Speaker
He's from Baltimore.
00:08:36
Speaker
He's been cutting Martin Lawrence hair for years, decades, right?
00:08:39
Speaker
When I first moved to LA, he said, listen, young man, you got a good head on your shoulders.
00:08:46
Speaker
You got look going on.
00:08:47
Speaker
You're a good looking brother.
00:08:48
Speaker
One thing I don't want you to do
00:08:50
Speaker
is get caught up in black Hollywood.
00:08:51
Speaker
I'm like, what do you mean?
00:08:53
Speaker
Like, don't become consumed and accustomed to just being in black Hollywood, being the black goddess in Hollywood with all the black people all the time.
00:09:02
Speaker
And he said, not that you don't want to do that and be a part of that.
00:09:05
Speaker
You got to understand that before you're a black, you're a human being.
00:09:08
Speaker
You're a human being before you're anything.
00:09:14
Speaker
So since the age of 22, moving to LA in 2010,
00:09:19
Speaker
that always resonated with my spirit.
00:09:22
Speaker
So when I go out in society or just the world, the universe, I'm not looking at it, I'm this black man.
00:09:30
Speaker
Yes, I'm aware that I'm black and my skin is darker, but that's not my intention.
00:09:35
Speaker
So I'm not gonna attract
00:09:37
Speaker
the thoughts or the frequency that the average or a typical black person would probably attract, like racism and challenges, like maybe, but I'm not looking for that because I'm not putting that label on my mind and my life that I'm this.
00:09:53
Speaker
So people don't understand when you claim something, the universe brings you that.
00:09:57
Speaker
It's kind of like attracting what you believe or what comes with that territory.
00:10:02
Speaker
If you say you're a gang member, you're going to get everything that comes with saying being a gang member.
00:10:06
Speaker
Let's look at Tekashi 6ix9ine.
00:10:09
Speaker
So what I'm saying is that we got to be aware of what we're saying and how we're saying it.
00:10:14
Speaker
That's besides the point.
00:10:15
Speaker
All I'm saying is that be aware, never
Embracing Uncertainty
00:10:19
Speaker
But some things you have to give up to grow.
00:10:22
Speaker
You have to give things up to grow.
00:10:24
Speaker
Sometimes you have to give up the relationship with your childhood friend just to build a better one on that.
00:10:31
Speaker
Because you got to go and grow.
00:10:32
Speaker
But when you're trying to hold on to something that's not moving, a relationship, life, friends, partnership, job, money.
00:10:39
Speaker
I got to hold this money.
00:10:40
Speaker
I got to hold this money.
00:10:40
Speaker
You can never make more.
00:10:42
Speaker
Because you're holding on to it.
00:10:45
Speaker
Invest it so you can get more.
00:10:47
Speaker
Yeah, you make room for the better things.
00:10:51
Speaker
And I always my mom said this to me.
00:10:54
Speaker
Every disappointment is a blessing.
00:10:58
Speaker
And, you know, you can't ever really grow.
00:11:01
Speaker
I think I told you this yesterday.
00:11:04
Speaker
I'm a Virgo and I am very.
00:11:08
Speaker
prepared at all times.
00:11:09
Speaker
I plan all the, it's kind of annoying.
00:11:14
Speaker
And I don't like change.
00:11:17
Speaker
I have to go through it.
00:11:19
Speaker
I cringe every time, but most people do not like change.
00:11:25
Speaker
But I have a tattoo on me because I don't like change that says make peace with uncertainty.
00:11:33
Speaker
It's the hardest thing to do because you want to know what's happening next.
00:11:38
Speaker
You want to know like, okay, if I let this go, am I going to be okay?
00:11:43
Speaker
You're going to be even better.
00:11:46
Speaker
You're going to be even better.
00:11:47
Speaker
And be okay not knowing what's next.
00:11:49
Speaker
Don't be afraid of the unknown because that's when miracles happen.
00:11:52
Speaker
Because when you have it all figured out, you can't figure it out.
00:11:57
Speaker
Because you think, if I would have came in here today, right?
00:12:01
Speaker
And did this podcast.
00:12:04
Speaker
and knew everything that was going to go on, how it was going to go on, I wouldn't be present.
00:12:10
Speaker
Because I'm not allowing whatever's supposed to come down in that moment to exist and happen.
00:12:16
Speaker
But let's talk about never giving up.
00:12:19
Speaker
I have a story or I have a topic or a person I think we all might know.
Comebacks and Learning from Failures
00:12:23
Speaker
Well, basketball fans.
00:12:25
Speaker
Let's talk about Derek
00:12:29
Speaker
Yes, Chicago native.
00:12:31
Speaker
Because I don't want people to confuse me never giving up with you should give up, right?
00:12:36
Speaker
So, Derrick Rose, MVP, rookie of the year.
00:12:42
Speaker
He was everything his first two or three years in the NBA.
00:12:45
Speaker
Then he had a knee injury.
00:12:47
Speaker
I think he tweaked his ACL.
00:12:48
Speaker
Then he tore it again.
00:12:50
Speaker
Then he had a toe injury.
00:12:51
Speaker
He just kept getting hurt, right?
00:12:53
Speaker
So, a lot of people...
00:12:56
Speaker
Just thought like, oh, it's done.
00:12:58
Speaker
He's never going to be back to where he needs to be.
00:13:00
Speaker
I'm guilty of saying that.
00:13:03
Speaker
You know, some people are like, man, he's low on his confidence.
00:13:09
Speaker
But Derrick Rose never gave up until this day.
00:13:12
Speaker
He's still in the NBA.
00:13:13
Speaker
He's still in the NBA.
00:13:16
Speaker
Maybe not the superstar status that he was.
00:13:19
Speaker
But he's up there.
00:13:21
Speaker
But I think what happened was he didn't give up.
00:13:25
Speaker
But he did let go.
00:13:27
Speaker
What did he let go?
00:13:28
Speaker
He let go of who he was to become who he is.
00:13:34
Speaker
So who he was was the superstar, the MVP, the talent, the great Chicago, Derrick Rose.
00:13:43
Speaker
I love Derrick Rose.
00:13:47
Speaker
But that part of him diminished just a bit because he had to find out another side of him.
00:13:53
Speaker
So he let that side go.
00:13:55
Speaker
He let that part of him go.
00:13:57
Speaker
And to grow and be the man, the father, the athlete, and the NBA guy that he is today, which is great.
00:14:06
Speaker
puts up great numbers he's on the Detroit Pistons right now yeah and his comeback story is amazing he dropped 50 points last year so Minnesota Timberwolves yeah but just to give people example I think he let go of what he thought he should have had based on his circumstances and it was easy to give up because his injuries
00:14:31
Speaker
So it's kind of like case in point.
00:14:33
Speaker
You got to know when to let go.
00:14:34
Speaker
You got to know when to give up on things.
00:14:35
Speaker
But give up is such a strong statement.
00:14:39
Speaker
So I don't want people to think like, yeah, just give up.
00:14:41
Speaker
Like, no, don't just give up.
00:14:43
Speaker
Process it, access it, and really understand, okay, is this working for me?
00:14:48
Speaker
Is this a part of my life?
00:14:50
Speaker
Does this get into my life?
00:14:52
Speaker
And then you're like, you know what?
00:14:54
Speaker
Or am I just afraid of work?
00:14:56
Speaker
Because sometimes I also know people who are great at work.
00:15:00
Speaker
And then when they don't get what they want from what they do, they give up.
00:15:04
Speaker
They have a fixed mindset around that.
00:15:06
Speaker
That was the issue of mine personally.
00:15:08
Speaker
I'm so good at this and I'm not doing it with these people.
00:15:11
Speaker
And they expect fast results.
00:15:14
Speaker
And it's like, even when you start a business,
00:15:19
Speaker
Sorry, I'm from Texas.
00:15:21
Speaker
When you start a business, you can't look for profit within the first six months.
00:15:27
Speaker
People think like, oh, I started this business.
00:15:29
Speaker
I'm going to start making money off the bat.
00:15:32
Speaker
No, you have to have your funds suitable for the first six months in order for you to start seeing profit.
00:15:40
Speaker
Because then your ego gets in and you're like, yeah, we started making this money.
00:15:45
Speaker
But what I had to learn from running a business is that there are seasons.
00:15:50
Speaker
Yeah, you're good for the summertime, but when fall hit, you looking for everything, especially in L.A.
00:15:56
Speaker
Seasons are really, really amazing.
00:15:59
Speaker
And here's the thing.
00:16:00
Speaker
You used to come to my boot camps back in the day.
00:16:03
Speaker
For two years, I had a boot camp in North Hollywood Park.
00:16:05
Speaker
Shots out the NoHo!
00:16:12
Speaker
Rich life success driven!
00:16:16
Speaker
I did it for two years.
00:16:20
Speaker
Maybe four to eight, maybe ten people at a time would show up.
00:16:24
Speaker
I didn't get paid for that.
00:16:28
Speaker
After those two years, I gave it up.
00:16:34
Speaker
Let it go, gave it up, whatever.
00:16:36
Speaker
But I didn't let it go because I didn't want to do it.
00:16:39
Speaker
It just wasn't in my season to do it anymore.
00:16:43
Speaker
Fast forward to now.
00:16:45
Speaker
Maybe four or five years, you know, after that.
00:16:50
Speaker
Now I'm getting paid.
00:16:53
Speaker
More than enough money.
00:16:53
Speaker
To do the same boot camps.
00:16:54
Speaker
To do the same boot camps once a month.
00:16:59
Speaker
So I really never gave it up.
00:17:04
Speaker
The universe brought me even more.
00:17:06
Speaker
Give me a high five.
00:17:09
Speaker
So if you understand what I'm saying.
00:17:12
Speaker
sometimes you got to let go of things maybe even relationships yes you know maybe you need to take time a year or two years off and maybe you're back and you end up with that same person right like you got to grow yeah you got to become more you got to become something and so if it's in your cards to keep that professional that job or that thing or that business but guess what that business the business you gave up
00:17:34
Speaker
You have information about it now.
00:17:36
Speaker
So when you go start another business, you got that information.
00:17:39
Speaker
You know how to run it.
00:17:40
Speaker
You know the ins and outs.
00:17:42
Speaker
So there's no fear there.
00:17:44
Speaker
Because you have information.
00:17:48
Speaker
Everything is an experience, guys.
00:17:50
Speaker
You have to understand that your life is always working for you.
00:17:57
Speaker
And not against you.
00:17:59
Speaker
Everything that you're going through right now is propelling you for that next season.
00:18:06
Speaker
I have a theory called the slingshot theory.
00:18:10
Speaker
And basically what it is, is if you picture a slingshot and you have your rock on there and you only pull the rock back just a little bit and you let it go, the rock isn't going to go very far.
00:18:23
Speaker
But if you put the rock on the rubber, on the slingshot and you pull it back,
00:18:30
Speaker
all the way, when you let the rock go, it's gone.
00:18:34
Speaker
You won't even be able to see the rock again.
00:18:36
Speaker
And that's what life does for us.
00:18:39
Speaker
It's short-term sacrifice for long-term benefits.
00:18:45
Speaker
If you have to let something go, let it go.
00:18:49
Speaker
If it's in your heart, I tried to let go of art.
00:18:52
Speaker
I tried to let go of modeling and acting because it wasn't giving me the results that I expected at the time.
00:18:58
Speaker
So I said, let me just put this on a back burner, get my mind right and see, okay, will there be a time where I'll find it again?
00:19:07
Speaker
And I actually did.
00:19:09
Speaker
And I'm like, oh, I'm not desperate when I go into an audition anymore.
00:19:14
Speaker
I'm not seeking to get booked automatically because I know the game.
00:19:19
Speaker
So just be patient with yourself.
00:19:22
Speaker
And, you know, if there is something that you are looking to attain, grind, work for it, grow through it.
Faith and Sacrifice
00:19:30
Speaker
But also know if you're forcing, it's hindering your, you know, your well-being, you should just let it go.
00:19:40
Speaker
But the main thing for all of us, for everybody listening, what I got from this podcast, Amina, is...
00:19:49
Speaker
Let go so you can grow, but never, never, never give up on yourself.
00:19:58
Speaker
That's the ultimate.
00:19:59
Speaker
You can give up on these, but never give up on yourself.
00:20:03
Speaker
And with the slingshot theory and let go, let go also, you know, stretching that stretch.
00:20:10
Speaker
When you let go, check it out.
00:20:12
Speaker
Here it is, here it is, right here.
00:20:14
Speaker
When you let go and you're pulling it back, the slingshot,
00:20:17
Speaker
Guess what you're doing?
00:20:18
Speaker
You're stretching your faith.
00:20:25
Speaker
Because you're telling yourself when I let this job, this profession, this relationship, this thing go, that I have more faith that things are going to happen for the greater good.
00:20:35
Speaker
Because everything is greater later.
00:20:39
Speaker
Hello, I'm in church.
00:20:41
Speaker
So it's all right.
00:20:45
Speaker
So you can grow, but you also got to stretch that faith when you let go.
00:20:49
Speaker
And believe that you can achieve whatever you're looking for.
00:20:53
Speaker
And that short-term sacrifice is tough.
00:20:56
Speaker
It's uncomfortable.
00:20:58
Speaker
But it's so good for the back-end results.
00:21:00
Speaker
Because it's like, how did I not do that?
00:21:03
Speaker
How did I not do this?
00:21:04
Speaker
When I went on the show, The Bachelorette, 10 weeks I was gone.
00:21:08
Speaker
I couldn't make no money.
00:21:11
Speaker
I couldn't talk to no one.
00:21:14
Speaker
I had faith that something great was going to happen.
00:21:18
Speaker
But I had to sacrifice those 10 weeks not having a normal life to have an even better life.
00:21:25
Speaker
So I had to stretch and let go of what I thought I should have in that moment.
00:21:32
Speaker
I love, I love, I love talking about stuff like this, guys.
00:21:35
Speaker
There is a, I have a quote.
00:21:38
Speaker
Okay, what's the quote?
00:21:40
Speaker
You know, I love me some roomie.
00:21:42
Speaker
Hmm, I love roomie.
00:21:43
Speaker
So there is a quote that pertains to this and it says, if you are irritated by every rub, how will you be polished?
00:21:56
Speaker
That for me resonated for this conversation because the growing part, it's called growing pains for a reason.
00:22:05
Speaker
It don't feel good.
00:22:07
Speaker
It's going to be uncomfortable, but just know that the end result of that is going to be better.
00:22:12
Speaker
And I have another one that says, procrastination is not only the fear of failure, it is the belief that success can be postponed to another day.
00:22:25
Speaker
So if you happen to give up, right, because you weren't getting the results and the stuff you were doing, you're a human being.
00:22:36
Speaker
So you have a natural desire that keeps coming over and over and over again.
00:22:41
Speaker
Sometimes when you've given up on multiple things, you start to procrastinate because you're afraid of falling again.
00:22:48
Speaker
But procrastination is just a huge fear that you must overcome.
00:22:53
Speaker
So you win some, lose some to fight another day.
