The Purple Door Podcast - A Friends Rewatch Pod

Transcript

Speaker: Well, hello and welcome to the Purple Door. but I almost messed it up. I knew I would. i did it again. I wasn't even going to call you out on that one, Al. I just recorded my other podcast and I used the cadence of the tone that I do for that one. So let's, I'm going to leave it in. Sorry, everyone. Welcome to the Purple Door Podcast, a friend's rewatch pod.

Speaker: I am your bumbling host, Alistair, alongside the wonderful Deanne. Deanne, how are you today? ah Doing great, Al. Doing great. How are you? I'm wonderful. It is a Friday afternoon. Deanne has taken the day off to do bits and pieces and here we are recording at an unusual time, which I think is just super, super awesome.

Speaker: Yeah, it is. Before we get into this this ah this episode of Bamboozled, I have big news and it's not possibly the big news you think it is. I have big news that you don't know.

Speaker: This is always fun. Yes. Well, it's big news to me. today I am very excited for you. Today on the 9th of October, 2006, this episode that we are recording, we're recording it a week in advance because we're both kind of busy.

Speaker: It is the 102nd episode of the Purple Door podcast. So because it's the 102nd, do you know what that means? I don't. It means it what does it it means it's your episode. it is.

Speaker: So a huge celebration for Deanne. She's just the best. Steve, my good friend Steve, recorded episode one and three, I believe. And then Deanne took her rightful seat as the co-host. Man.

Speaker: It's your episode today. Wow. oh well yeah i would I would just like to give a shout out to Al, who allowed me to come and Join him on this adventure. It was meant to be. Happy 102nd episode to you. There we go. And happy 100th to you. I've been waiting for this for weeks. I've watching the countdown. Oh, man. Gino, that's funny. i was driving the other day, and I was thinking about one hundredth episodes and blah, blah, blah. And I was like, I wonder when the 100th episode of Friends is going to Like which one that is and like, what are we going to do and all that.

Speaker: And that's so funny. Yeah, it's going to have to be, if I've got my head the right way around, it will be in a couple of episodes because we have, you know, like two or three. Mm hmm. Yeah, we had couple of season ending ones and then we did that live kind one at Miss Angeline's, our local drinking establishment that always hosts us. They've reached back out to do another trivia night.

Speaker: um Yeah. Interview with a super fan. So, yeah, I think it must be right towards the end of season four. Yeah. Yeah. So we will see. But yeah, 100 today. I think that's super cool.

Speaker: I do too. Yay. Yay for us. That makes me very happy. us. Yay for us. Well, this one is the one with all the haste.

Speaker: um Again, once again, i had to think for a second, well, what are they being hasty about? And then, of course, remembered exactly where we are. In the storyline, but before we get into it, of course we have bamboozled. Now, we are recording this rather quickly, so Kate has not checked the questions. That just occurred to me. We'll just see what happens. We'll see what happens. We recorded last night then with DM being off today. We said, let's just do two so we get a little ahead. And we will just, I've got a couple of extras, so we'll just see what happens.

Speaker: Who goes first today? oh That would be me. I love it. All right. I'm ready. All right. What does the Etch-a-Sketch say? Oh, heavens. You're going to have to bear with me. Apparently, I don't have all my words today.

Speaker: oh What does the Etch-a-Sketch say whenever it's hanging on the door in the in the purple apartment? In the purple apartment. I have this in my notes because I didn't see it.

Speaker: And then I saw it when I was deep diving into the episode afterwards. Somebody had made a note about it. Oh, I have forgotten what it says. so i'm oh I'm trying to even think of a guest. That's so annoying because I know it's written down in front of me. It is...

Speaker: I was going to say Boy's Apartment. I don't know. I don't know. Do you know what? That is actually a pretty nice guess because it actually says, what's up, bro? Oh, yes, it does. And I felt like that would be I don't know, a little foreshadowing to the end of the episode, right? I like that. Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker: And I'll tell you what, and George was watching this with me, and he says, you know, why are they in that apartment? That's not their apartment. was like, actually, until the end. Because I remembered whenever they did the switch, however, and do you remember I said, oh, I remember how they end up back yeah in the apartment. Yes. And I did not realize it was this episode. Neither did I. Yeah, neither did But that's, it's so classic.

Speaker: It's so good. It's so good. talk about this in the morning. Right. The way the door opens and shuts, I can't wait to get into yes into that. My first question for you.

Speaker: When Chandler and Joey are talking about the season tickets in Central Park, what color is Gunther's shirt? And I will say, and his tie. Oh, is it purple? It is not.

Speaker: You get one more catch. Is it pink? It's bright pink. Yes. Okay. Okay. Bright pink shop and a bright pink with a design with some other colors. Yes. Bright pink. Indeed. Okay. You're off the board.

Speaker: but Thank you. That is wonderful. All right, then. I will hop into that scene. What's Chandler's order to Gunther? Oh, I get it. I write this down. It's to... I didn't get it.

Speaker: Yeah, it's just an unusual like coffee sounding sort of thing. Two...

Speaker: ah It's gone out my head. Is it two something? Uh-huh. Yep, two... And he says it all weird and then yeah and and Gunther is not entertained at all no he is not You know, I know it's not like espressos because it's an odd one. I don't have it.

Speaker: what She knows. She knows, yes. which is Isn't that kind of jeans or something? It is. It's a kind of pants. Right. And so I don't know like what when on earth.

Speaker: yeah Yeah. That's an odd and odd one. All right. Well, I'm 0 for 2. You are 1 for 1. How long have Ross and Emily known each other? Six weeks. You are two for two. There was no hesitation at all. No, but that's because, oh, Al. ah That was my question number six.

Speaker: All right. Well, I've got some extra. I've got a couple of extra ones. Okay, well that is my only extra question. Okay. Fingers crossed. We'll just see what happens. Okay, ask me a different one. Okay.

Speaker: What is the first card that Joey drew from the deck?

Speaker: An ace. Yes, you get half a point. You got one in four chance. An ace of... Oh, crap. Hearts. I'm going to give it. It was an ace of diamonds. I was being mean. It was an ace. That's okay. You can be mean. I'll take a half a point. I'm okay with that.

Speaker: All right. What should Monica wear to a Knicks game? A shirt that says I don't belong here. Which I kind of want to wear in every big public setting, I think.

Speaker: Right? Yeah. i I want a shirt that says that. I don't belong here. um Alright, let's see. I'm going to ask you. I'm going to stick with the same theme.

Speaker: What card does Monica initially draw from the deck? four The four. and that It's a black four, right? It is indeed. You're getting the whole point. It's a four of clubs, yes. Well, you can give me a half point for that too.

Speaker: It's okay. It's okay. I'm not offended. Alright. What two musical acts are referenced in regards to Ross?

Speaker: His new... All right. Oh, good. In regards to his new tournament. David Bowie and Wan. Nice. Good job. Yes. Just wake me up before you Google.

Speaker: That's it. All right. Let's see. What do I have for you, I've got one I want to ask you, but it's not actually in the episode. um Oh, well, ask it anyway. All right.

Speaker: What's the full name of the New York Knicks?

Speaker: The New York Knickerbockers? It is. See, you knew. Is it Oh, it really is. Yeah, that's the actual name. They're named after the pantaloons or whatever it was that they wore back in the day.

Speaker: Stop! Are you for real right now? For real. For real. That is their special name. Why would I know that? And it just came out. To be honest, I only know it. That's amazing.

Speaker: I only know from an obscure movie reference. There was a movie called, i think it was called Eddie that starred Whoopi Goldberg. and Oh, yeah. Yeah, like she's a fan and she gets to coach a team for a little bit as ah a prize. And she ends up being like the full-time coach. And I remember seeing that and thinking, wow, I didn't know they were really the New York Knickerbockers.

Speaker: God, that's hilarious. Yeah, I had no clue. No clue whatsoever. It was back there some way. Mm-hmm. With no hesitation. no That was crazy. Yeah.

Speaker: That was crazy. All right. What have you got for me? My final question. Final question. What color are the stools in the boys' apartment? Oh, that's good. Yeah, I've got no idea. At the end. At the end. Like after everything's been switched out. Yes, it is. Oh, God, that is the funniest dadgum scene to me.

Speaker: Oh, God. It's so good. I think it's got to be a fairly plain neutral color just because all the colorful stuff is back at Monica's. So I'm going with black seems too simple, but I'm going with black because I don't know.

Speaker: No, I was going say purple, but no, no, that's wrong too. No, you want to take one more guess? Just for giggles, and I don't get the point. I'm going to go with the yellow.

Speaker: No. Green. Green. It's like velvet green. ah know they They're real pretty. They're pretty. they You approve of them. That's good. I do. You do. Well, you have won this with a question to spare, but I'm going to ask you it, of course, anyway. I have two questions left for you. um What book does Chandler ask Joey if he has read?

Speaker: Oh, flowers for algernon. Yes, indeed. And then just for giggles, what is Joey's favorite thing about trees? Oh, that they're tall. That they're tall. Yeah, I love the way they're tall. Like that's the right answer. Yeah, we were looking for leafy. Leafy. Leafy.

Speaker: I love it. There's so much good stuff in this episode. All right, let's get into it We're going to start. We're off in Rachel's bedroom. One of my favourite opening scenes. i just love this song. I love the guy who sings it. I've reached out to him, but of course I watched the episode this morning, reached out. Should I hear back? And we'll we'll add something in this episode. but um He's not done too much in terms of acting. He's more of a state, you know, TV and film acting. He's more of a stage actor.

Speaker: um But yeah, he sings the Morning's Here song. I love the way Rachel comes in, comes out. Very upset. But I think you know a little bit about this song. Not much. Not much. I just know. Yeah, no, I just knew that it was based on another song.

Speaker: And it's it's some song that I don't know, but it's old. It's old. i think it's from a musical. Yeah, it was Chuck Mangione's 1977 instrumental hit, Feels So Good.

Speaker: So I'm guessing that this next-door neighbour... That's the tune. That's the tune, yeah. And then he put his own words to it, which... Just, I just, i don't know why exactly. i just love it so much. I love this guy's energy and spirit. I was going to ask you about that.

Speaker: No, go ahead. That's the way he starts his day. Yeah. Every day. Yeah. That's great. Yeah. why guy We could all use a little bit of that, you know? bing Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah. Do you remember the things that Rachel says she hates about the apartment?

Speaker: I know that it smells like birds. Yes, the color of the walls and then that. yeah Yes. Yeah, that singing guy the color of the walls, it still smells like bird. And she's kind of aggressive about it, which I love.

Speaker: I don't blame her, though. Man, ah like, we've talked about this before, about how it smells, you know? And yeah, like cats, I think have a very distinct smell, dogs and birds and then small animals.

Speaker: Like I used to work with, uh, um, uh, I, I don't know why I want to say chap. I have never used that word in common language. Something is off with the brain today, but, um,

Speaker: but that had a hedgehog and the hedgehog had a very distinctive smell and even whenever hedgy the hedgehog was not at school his smell lingered you know yes so i get that like Smelly like bird. Yeah. It's not going to be a good smell, especially when you're used to Monica clean, which, you know, just smells wonderful.

Speaker: um mon Monica, we find out, doesn't have a bed. She sleeps in a ball on the floor. um it was funny. Have you ever seen it? it's It's a podcast, but it's really a social media thing called Subway Takes No, no, it's this is this guy. And he was he's in New York filmmaker and stuff. But he started a thing online where you would just sit on the New York subway and basically say, what's your take? And ask people about their slightly controversial opinions about key topics, usually.

Speaker: You know, but like what what is, you know, somebody would be very passionate about the fact that, I don't know, strawberry yogurt is the best yogurt. That kind of thing or something. But it's now grown into, he almost exclusively does like celebrities, like A-list celebrities have been on um subway takes. And I just remember one of the subway takes was a lady who was like, beds are overrated. She literally sleep slept in a big dog bed.

Speaker: And she was like, I'm not spending thousands of dollars on a bed. It's comfortable. It's it's soft. It's this, that, the other. And he was just, I wouldn't say disgusted, but he was pretty appalled by the fact that she this lady was like, it's a great space saver, money saver.

Speaker: I can literally stick the whole thing, throw it in the wash. it's it's So it's like it's clean, it's this and but he wasn't having He wasn't having it. It just reminded me of, yeah, Subway Texas is a lot of fun to watch. I enjoy that. I bet. But she is, Monica's worked really hard on the apartment. I quite like the fact that she stands up to Rachel a little bit about this because um it does look good and maybe she just can't get rid of that smell.

Speaker: But it certainly looks warm and inviting to me. Mm-hmm. Well, she's so sweet about it. She, you know, I'm sorry, and is giving her a hug and everything. And Joey's like, see, it's not that bad. Yeah, this place is hole. Yeah, this place is a hole. To me, that's see feel I've never said those words in my life. It feels like such a 90s thing to say, you know, which I just, I love that.

Speaker: We go to Ross's apartment. Ross and Emily are in bed. He got an earring, as we alluded to in Bamboozled. um It's not something that's ever crossed my mind to do.

Speaker: ah and No. no no No. No, not really. you know feel like, not that I would do it for fashion's sake or anything, but I feel like it's a lot less common now than it used to be. See,

Speaker: I think it's... Well, yeah, a guy with one who, sure. Right. But I think it's coming back in. Yeah? Yeah, because all of a sudden I'm seeing like younger kids, like boys with their ears pierced. Oh.

Speaker: and And that's something that I've never seen at all with young boys. Interesting. But like a handful of them I've noticed this year. Interesting. And that's different. making a comeback. Yeah.

Speaker: In the fashion fashion. In the fashion. um Ross loves who he is when he's with Emily. He's becoming the best version of them himself. I think he thinks um Emily wishes she could stay, but she's already missed so much work. I do wonder what she does. Yes, go ahead. go I do too, but I also think gross. She says, I think it makes you look dangerous. It's kind of icky.

Speaker: Ross Geller couldn't look dangerous if we like rolled him in dirt and cuts and bruises. No, this is the guy who a couple of weeks ago when somebody ran up and tackled Emily, you know, playfully in the alley, he just started screaming, help, help, help.

Speaker: like Right. like Yeah. Yeah. But when she says, I think it makes you look really dangerous. i She's ridiculous. yeah Yeah, I'm not buying it not baing it at all.

Speaker: But part of me also wonders, like, is this actually a pretty good match? Because maybe so. You know, I mean, again, Emily's one of those characters I think people like to hate, but she actually has done nothing wrong.

Speaker: Like, she maybe goes a little nuts at the end, but I think it's understandable. Well, yeah. And you know she's got to be a little unhinged, right? Because like they've only known each other six weeks. and Right.

Speaker: And we're about to... And and so a little... ah Not on the logical side, but... Yeah. Yeah. like as She genuinely seems to think he's great.

Speaker: Yeah, she's all about him. And I like the fact that You know, i mean, she'd have no reason to be, but she was so warm with ken ga with a with Susan and Carol.

Speaker: You know, there wasn't any weird jealousy about his ex-wife or or issue, you know, that's your son at the door. um You know, she seemed, yeah, very open to Ross's situation and... So far, so good for Emily. um Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah. But she's missed so much work, whatever it is she does. um So she can't stay. She really, really needs to leave. We go over to the girls' apartment. did my notes at the beginning of the episode, the magnitude. As you said, what's up, bro?

Speaker: um Joey and Chandler watch it I don't know why I find so funny the karate movie where they're kind of oh in the chair yeah they're just sitting there they are imagining their best karate lives I love it they're just having a great time Phoebe comes in and she is wearing Santa pants Santa Claus's pants But she looks so cute.

Speaker: Right? I mean, I kind of like, yeah, they're Santa pants, but she pulls off the outfit pretty well without it looking like a Christmas outfit. and Yeah. Like, that's the thing. i was is like, had they been any other color, they wouldn't have said a word.

Speaker: No. Not a word would have been said. No. and They're so cute. Yeah. Yeah. her That whole outfit is adorable. And I love the belt. and you know Yeah, it's it's a it's a great fit, as the kids would say. it even comes with a list of baby names, good and bad. exactly Which is awesome. And then I think the penny drops drops for her. um oh Rachel's little mean comes on in and asks how the elves are.

Speaker: um yeah see Yeah, but she got how Rachel's mom gets her dad's season tickets in the divorce seems nuts. But she got them and she clearly, miss you know, Mrs. Green clearly doesn't want them. So gave them to Rachel.

Speaker: i So do you think this is true?

Speaker: Oh, that's an interesting

Speaker: That's a very interesting thought. That never occurred to me that this was a this was all made up to try and get the apartment back. Well, and obviously they go. But yeah, like maybe her mom did get the next tickets because the mom was being ta you know being mean, being like, yeah, i want that.

Speaker: Does she really know but you know, like those would be way expensive and blah blah bla blah blah. But like, so she just gave them to me I find it really hard to believe that they just happened into these next tickets. Yeah, and you you know, as the one thing that I kind of clocked, and it maybe buys into this story a bit, is like Rachel just has one ticket. Now, this is before, of course, the smartphones and the QR codes, but you would have a book of tickets, you know, for each, for whole season. We never see that. We just see one game.

Speaker: So maybe she right gives them that one game, and then the the the rest of the season tickets don't, you know, doesn't really exist. Yes. And I think that that's what she's doing.

Speaker: is the She came in. ah sheny i feel like it's more calculated than, oh, we got this. Let's trade.

Speaker: you know i think you are onto something. and that And that didn't occur to me at all. I was being Joey and Chandler and just went, oh, that's cool. And left it to that. I think that might be right. Yeah.

Speaker: You know, they offer them in exchange for the apartment back. Joey's kind of feeling it, but Chandler absolutely not. And they're discussing this in Central Park at the next seat in the next scene.

Speaker: And this is where Ross comes in and they start teasing him about his earring. like Again, po I feel a little bad for Ross when Joey's like, we don't make enough fun of you already. And like flicking his ear.

Speaker: it's ah i mean, I'm not saying it's a good look or a good decision, but... Ross is getting it. um Let's see. Ross, he is upset about Emily leaving and you know he's he starts thinking maybe she should move in. Again, we've got to put on the kind of you know suspend reality here because you can't just move to another country at the drop of a hat for no real reason.

Speaker: Dude, I would like to know who can afford to be flying back and forth to another country all the time. Right. Right. Right. Maybe she's an air stewardess and she can get like lights you know very cheaply or something. I don't know. Maybe. yeah But if that's true, like then why wouldn't she just see about getting transferred? Yeah, that's a good point.

Speaker: Yeah. Yeah. How she is affording just, and again, unplanned, you know, these, you know, a couple of thousand dollars to, to go back and forth every week or two, it seems.

Speaker: Um, so rob maybe this is just another big lie. Like everybody eats breakfast with their friends every morning. Right. That's right. It's another thing. Yeah. There's something good. I'd be curious what Emily does or did it.

Speaker: Maybe if we, uh, you know Maybe there'll be a small mention of something later on that I've forgotten about. Because there's not been so far. No, but Ross is in his head about suggesting Emily should move move in with him. I think both Joey and Chandler are like, this is kind of nuts. you know this is It's only been six weeks. You you don't really even know each other. Chandler's had a relationship with the carton of milk longer.

Speaker: um which i I love that line. we We head over, we're back in the girls' apartment. Phoebe is trying to knit. Have you ever knit? Have you ever tried that?

Speaker: I do know how to knit. I don't know a lot of different like stitches and knitting, but whenever George was a baby, and right before George was born, I learned how to knit, and I was a knitting fool for about a year.

Speaker: And then... I stopped. But yeah, I do know how to knit. And it is hard. But then once you understand the motions, it it's not.

Speaker: It's actually very i've never relaxing. My mum knits and it's relaxing for her. My whole life she has. And she will she can watch a show on the television.

Speaker: she's She's focused on knitting a weight. Like you said, the motions, it's ah it's it's beyond impressive. I think people can do that. um Rachel comes in. It's the final chance before she's just going to give these expensive season tickets to Joshua, who she's only really just started dating. Joshua. Yeah.

Speaker: Give them to my new boyfriend, Joshua. Yeah, and it just... Madness to me. Joey says no, Chandler says no, but Joey really wants it. I mean, he's just clocked the toilet. It's perfect timing to to switch fish back apartments. Yeah.

Speaker: Okay, have you ever read Flowers for Algernon? No, it's one of those books that I know. Oh, that reminds me to tell you something. Yeah, I know. don't know if it's actually a classic, but it's one of those books I think everyone's heard of.

Speaker: I've not read Yeah. Oh, it's so sad. It's so, so incredibly sad. Yikes. Because it it it it's as it's... So out Algernon is is a mouse.

Speaker: right And they're doing all these different like tests and things on him to make him super smart. And then they take a man and they start doing, giving him the things because they think they perfected it.

Speaker: And so he gets very smart and gets very smart. And then the mouse starts declining. Right. and And so it's, and I just ruined it for everybody. Sorry. The whole thing is, is, you know, he's talking about you can't, if you go back, it destroys everything.

Speaker: Right. Because you can be perfectly happy until you know, better Right. but then you if you you can't go back once you already know and i trust and that's the whole point and so whenever he's like you know we can't go back to the small part now that we've lived here right haven't you ever read Flowers for Algernon? Because it is it is heartbreaking.

Speaker: Like, it is heartbreaking. It is. It's no Sports Illustrated. yeah It is no Knicks Sports Illustrated. Right. That is correct. Noah Hay didn't read yours.

Speaker: um I did watch two movies. I don't know if i told you this. Right. Two of the movies i think we've talked about. Possibly, possibly not. A couple of weeks ago, I was like, I'm going to do it.

Speaker: And I sat and watched Rise of War Dogs. Okay, I knew that one. Okay, then watched The Godfather the next day. Good for you! ah Yeah. what Think about Godfather. You know, I think I could really get into it. Like, i really enjoyed it.

Speaker: Yeah, you could. Yeah. It was the storyline and the way it was filmed and the kind of throwback language and just, I was like, all right, kind of, rumor has it, I think we probably talked about it. Apparently, the second one is thought to be better.

Speaker: Yes. But you have to see the first. To understand. look I mean, yes. ah little yeah One of my favorite films is Serendipity. And they talk about that. I love that. He hates that movie with the passion. I know. It is one of our things. He hates it. But one of the lines from that is, yeah, The Godfather Part 2 might be a better movie, but you have to watch Godfather Part 1 to truly appreciate the second. Right. Right.

Speaker: and The girls, they're going to offer a winner-takes-all bet Phoebe comes up with Phoebe Ball. yeah No, no, no. It has no name. That's right. That's ridiculous, Phoebe Ball. Now, do you have a favorite thing about trees?

Speaker: No. Me either. I mean, I like a good tree. I do. like I like the way pin pine smells. There you go. like, pine trees. I don't.

Speaker: I don't know if I've ever talked to you about this before or not, but I don't like pine trees themselves in my yard, right next to my yard, um around me because the pine needles are everywhere and I hate them. yep But I do love the way a good pine tree smells.

Speaker: can appreciate that. But not and the fake pine smell that like you can hang in your car, smell and spray. no none of that none of that nonsense but like whenever you go to the piney woods in east texas and you get out of the car yes the natural way it should be yes i like it i did a little deep dive and this was uh let me see i might be too early with all of this um Yes, in fact, I'm going to hold off on this. It's a little something I found out. It's for later in the episode. um

Speaker: But Monica suggests that, um yeah, you know, enough of this tree nonsense. Let's just draw High Card wins. that's yeah that's And Rachel's just like, shut up, we're winning. Right. It's this ridiculous non-game that Phoebe's come up with.

Speaker: um Yeah, Monica drew the four of clubs, joined the Ace of Diamonds, and they all celebrate, and they can't decide if Ace would be high or low. Yeah, and then they all look at Phoebe, she's like, I don't know.

Speaker: but look at her ah with her her trick deck of cards. ah Yeah. Yeah, they draw again Rachel draws the Queen of Hearts, which I think most of the time would win. But then Joey. Now, Whitney says it worked like he was... What was he doing to try and get the king? yeah yeah i think it was just, like, willing it. He was willing it to be. Yeah, that's high, but not as high as... Oh, my God, it worked!

Speaker: that's it Like, Yeah. okay Yeah, the boys win, although Joey, I guess, didn't understand the game, right? Because he thought they'd just won the tickets and lost the apartment. Right. Poor old Joey. he was He was struggling there. ah Yeah. Ross's... Well, I guess I could say it at this point, because I'll forget, when I was looking into the episode. So in the early script draft, Monica and Rachel were supposed to win back their apartment by beating...

Speaker: Joey and Chandler in a remade trivia contest. So this was gonna be another long drawn out trivia contest. But David Crane and Marta Kaufman decided that a sneaky physical takeover would lead would be a punchier line and more fun.

Speaker: So hilarious. Yeah, so they condensed Phoebe's quiz to just, you know, very small, and then brought us the the the stuff at the end Great move on their part. Yes. Yes. Yes. Because, i mean, they this is some of the funniest physical comedy films And most memorable in the entire series, in my opinion.

Speaker: Yeah. Oh, yeah. yeah You know, uh, with the all the stuff through the door and, oh gosh. All of it. So funny. Um, yeah, it's just, I mean, everyone in those scenes just, just, just kills it. It's so good.

Speaker: Uh, Emily is packed over at Ross's apartment. this Ross comes in and basically says, Emily, will you move in with me? Um, I like the fact that he would move to London, but he's not going to because of Ben. You know, that's his reason. And I like that. He didn't sort of say, I have a career and my family. You know, it's just Ben, which is the right thing. But it's nice to see Ross doing and saying the right thing. Right. Good point. Yeah, like I didn't like that. You know, I just like to hate on him all the time. Yeah.

Speaker: I do. I'm not. But you're right. This one, i was like, he put his son first, which we, you know, Ben kind of comes and goes throughout, throughout Friends. This did, maybe you can talk me around here.

Speaker: I think the way this, weird the conversation's weird. Like, let's just hypothetically pretend you and I are both single. And I jokingly said, we should get married when we're 50 to each other just for the you know the life insurance.

Speaker: You would laugh and we would move on. That wouldn't freak you out. The way that they both start kind of panicking, I think what she says is perfectly reasonable. Like it's level-headed. You know, if this was way down the line and we were getting married,

Speaker: that would be different. I don't think that's this weird thing where Ross kind of looks like he's flipping out and then she kind of flips out. Oh, I'm sorry. i just, I don't know. I thought it was a weird kind of segue into what happens next.

Speaker: Well, yeah, it it was. But you know how whenever Ross is talking to Chandler and Joey, And they're like, you don't want to freak her out You don't want to, you know, that's too fast, blah, blah, blah, blah. And then she says, well, yeah. And then she's like.

Speaker: Yeah. yeah it's just it It is weird. Yeah. Like i if i think if I'm dating somebody for six weeks and even if it's that long distance thing and and that lady said that to me.

Speaker: It wouldn't be weird. That's exactly right. It would be different if we were had been dating for three years long distance and we were getting married. that's I don't know. I just thought it was a weird segue.

Speaker: For sure. For sure. Yeah. Because they both make it weird. They both do. It's not on either one individually. They both kind of make it weird. But then Ross is like, why don't we?

Speaker: And he ends up with proposing with his wham earring that he pulls out of his ear, which you know it's not going to fit. So I don't i mean, it wasn't like some huge hoop.

Speaker: so No, no. um Yeah. But good on them. They're getting married. They're very much in love. and And it's it's Ross is is engaged. Yeah.

Speaker: It's so wild. Yeah. Yeah. But you know what? we let's let's Let's get into this. This scene that you love with Joey and Chandler coming back from the next game. You know, they're going to give the shirts to the girls. and you know They're too small and they were free. Yes. Yes.

Speaker: yeah And they go into the, it's, you know what, talk me through it. you need You need to talk us through this. Yeah. And so that, yeah. the Chandler walks in and you just see Chandler and then all the comedy of it. And he's just like, what is happening? And then it was like Joey walked in and it's just the routine. He grabs the beers out of the fridge, hands him a beer. Like he's completely forgotten what they were supposed to be doing. Yeah. Back into the routine of life. it's It's so well, like you're right, the way Chandler walks, like with his legs and his arms. Yeah. Yes, it is and he's like got his arms out and his legs are weird and he's just like, what is happening? Right. So funny. And then he leaves and it's like, hey, open up, open up, open up. Right.

Speaker: Monica opens it and she's got the chain on which is hysterical. And her only thing is, we'll discuss it in the morning and slams it. Right.

Speaker: that's And then Rachel opens it and she's just, you know, Monica's like angry, like irritated, right? You know, I'm going to pause you for a very important reason.

Speaker: Okay. Oh, is it Lenny?

Speaker: Lenny. Hi, honey. Hi. Oh, did you just wake My granddaughter, did we just wake up? We just woke up from our nap. Yeah. We're going to go back to Dad. There go.

Speaker: Bye, Lanny. There we Oh, my goodness. Yes. Are you guys leaving? She was like... No. Okay, good. All right, they're not leaving. that Jackson, my son-in-law, and Linnea here. Macy's run at mac iss not back yet. Good, good, good.

Speaker: Good. Yes, little Linnea here. Hi to Angie D. She's so cute. She is. because She looked very disturbed. She did. What is happening here? I love it. Where are we? Remind me where we are. Oh, okay. so ah Yes. so you know Monica's mad. like She's all irritated and everything and shuts the door and then Rachel opens up the door and yells at him and we took our apartment back. And you know and then she shuts the door and then Phoebe's like, I had nothing to do with it. And then she opens the door back up and she's like, okay, so it was my idea but I don't feel good about it. Yes.

Speaker: So the way that all of that kind of transpired made me wonder how it all went down with the girls moving all of that stuff. So two apartments worth of stuff. And you know Rachel would have been very motivated.

Speaker: Monica would have been very motivated. Phoebe, i don't know how much she really would have helped in this situation. But that's a lot of moving and doing.

Speaker: for a basketball game. Yeah, I was kind of guessing, let's say the boys are gone three hours and I'm just going again suspend reality to enjoy the fact that they managed to do this yes in three hours.

Speaker: you know yeah I think it's just, I think there's something kind badass about it that you know two healthy fit ladies and one healthy fit but pregnant lady managed to pull this off. I think it's brilliant and just love it.

Speaker: Yes. Hysterical. Hysterical. um Yeah. And then they end up coming in. Yeah. and Phoebe's kind of scared almost, isn't she, when they burst in the door? it's Yes.

Speaker: But... oh

Speaker: Yeah, and then, you know, that and obviously the two girls don't want to. The two girls don't want to. But then also the boys are Joey doesn't want to. So Chandler is more than welcome to go ahead and do it all.

Speaker: I love Joey's body language in this. regard to tide the timede the Back and forth. You know, yeah he just doesn't care that much. No. No. It's so brilliantly done.

Speaker: um So at this point, I'm trying to remember. That's right, because the girl, this is where you write, sorry, you cut out for just a second. Did you talk about the the girl's backup plan?

Speaker: Oh, no. No. I know. Yeah, where they they're going to kiss for one minute, and again, the look on the boy's face, eyebrows raised. you know is Well, in the phoebe and Phoebe is like, just think, you could have done that at the very beginning. And, that you know, we're going to just pretend like that's not true.

Speaker: Yeah, that's right. It's so good. um yeah And then, yeah, the boys go, and again, just the way they pace back into their apartment, but totally worth it.

Speaker: Like, you know, there wasn't much. Yeah, they they'd obviously decided this was a good idea. um And so if everyone's back in the apartment where they belong. But Ross and ross and Emily burst over. They grabbed Joey and Chandler, told them to come through. And Ross Emily announced their engagement to to the gang. Yeah.

Speaker: And Rachel's not in the room. and they're Oh, it's like, oh, it's so, it's for such a funny episode that kind of got me. Like, oh, poor Rachel. Like, even though there's the whole Joshua thing and they haven't been together in ages. It did it did kind of a bit of a slight slight sucker punch that one. just I felt really bad for her. Yeah. so Helen Baxendale, who plays Emily, she did become pregnant shortly after um after this.

Speaker: So the beginning of season five and I mean she was always going to get written out at some point but the story was expedited because she was pregnant. um I think I'm right saying she didn't have a great experience on the show, not because of any of the people or any of the cast, my understanding is she said everyone was wonderful. But she came over from the UK to do this role and was just uncomfortable was with what a huge blockbuster hit Friends was in the States. And they kind scrutinied the pressure of such a huge role. And I think she went i think she went back to the UK and focused most mostly on stage work. um Wasn't you know a big TV and movie star.

Speaker: after this role. But yeah, Rachel comes out and she's you know happy or pretends to be happy and they all hug it out. And we end this episode with Joy back in his bedroom.

Speaker: He and the singing guy have a lovely duet. Yes. I'll see you tomorrow morning. Okay. Yes. There's something so warm about that scene.

Speaker: Absolutely. Yeah. Just Just love it. Well, who would be your Gunther Central Punk this week? ah Easily Chandler.

Speaker: Because all of that whole last two scenes, three scenes, it's just so funny. And he he led that. And it was just, gosh...

Speaker: How many times have I seen that episode and it still makes me laugh, you know? And it's yeah it just so good. It's right there with you. I've chosen Chandler 2. Lots of good options, but none as great as Chandler.

Speaker: i think I think he's just, this is this is Matthew Perry at his finest. It had to be. um kind of what Part of wants to suggest something for how we should measure this episode, but I want to see if you say it first.

Speaker: what No, because now I'm scared. no I only did floor Knicks tickets. Oh. but But what what were you thinking? I wanted to do free t-shirts that were too small.

Speaker: Oh, there you go. But but I'm good with Knicks tickets. It was just the first thing that came to my mind. Yeah, that's funny. Either way.

Speaker: either Either way, how many? Either way, it's going to be eight and a half. That's exactly what I have. Eight and a crop top. Eight in a corrupt room. And I'll do eight in a ticket stub. And that's what we have. There you go.

Speaker: That's funny. that's but I like It's funny when we both have the same character. And yet I've written down 8.5 as well because it just. That is funny. Again, the the the Ross and Emily story. that's Fine. It's important, I guess. But the whole apartment switching.

Speaker: Oh, it's top tier friends stuff. Yes, on it yes, yes, yes. Yes. Well, let's see. Well, once again, congratulations. You are 100 episodes in, which I find very, very exciting. We will be back next week. It is the one with all the wedding dresses where Monica gets a little psycho.

Speaker: So that's that's quite exciting. But as always, everybody out there, thank you so much for listening to The Purple door podcast
