The Purple Door Podcast - A Friends Rewatch Pod

Transcript

Speaker: Well hello and welcome to this week's episode of the Purple Door Podcast, a friend's rewatch pod. I'm one of your hosts Alistair alongside as always Deanne. Deanne how are you today? I'm doing awesome Al, doing just peachy keen.

Speaker: Wonderful. And I got the introduction right this week as opposed to last week. With the weird pause. yeah no No long pause that did this this time. Yeah, I was thinking about that earlier. All right, I'm getting this right today.

Speaker: Well, well let you did a great job. Thank you. Thank you. We could just wrap up the podcast here now. We're done. it yes all And on a high. um Well, ah before we say the name of this week's episode, I thought I'd drop some trivia your way. ah Because this, in in the UK, there's a different rating system for for movies and TV shows. you Instead of being PG and whatever it is here.

Speaker: uh it's more age-based so you do have um pg and and u is below that for universal anyone can watch it but then you have 12 15 and 18 think it's still the same so basically you have to be 12 years old 15 years old 18 years old to see the see a certain movie or buy a dvd with we you know the certain rating Well, all of Friends is either 12 or certificate.

Speaker: rating certificate Sorry, I'm sorry, 12 RPG, depending on the season, depending what was talked about, except for this episode, which is the only one in the UK which was given a 15 rating because of the title. Of the language. and And the language and some of the stuff suggestively in the background. So if you're a parent a parent in the car with young children and all that, you may want to save this episode because the title of it is The One With The Free Porn.

Speaker: We're just repeating the title. That's all we're doing over here. that's a Right. Yes. Right. Okay. So I got, I'm so silly because it's like, yeah, like this is on regular TV and this is fine and whatever. And then I'm Googling and then I'm like, don't, I, I,

Speaker: I feel weird. ah so you know it So funny you say that because on my phone, I made the notes first thing this morning and then was like, you know, I'm going to double check my questions. And I was at work and on their VPN and their wifi. And I thought, you know what?

Speaker: I don't want that word getting flagged on my phone and have to sit down with somebody and look, it's a podcast about the TV show friends. Best not. I thought. Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah. Exactly. i was like, uh... Yeah. and we We are a family-friendly Purple Door podcast. but We are. It is what it Okay. So you know, like on Netflix, they do something like that. That's they

Speaker: fourteen why thirteen something like that but they rate that's how they rate And their stuff. Okay. I've never really looked at the Netflix ones, to be honest. yeah Yeah.

Speaker: All right. Yeah. I was curious about when this, i had a quick look and didn't see anything when this was shown on you know broadcast television on NBC back in the day. If they had to adjust it, this wasn't the original storyline, which I did find out.

Speaker: Oh, I'm interested to hear about that. I shall share that later on in my notes. But they changed it to this. i just wondered what NBC did, if anything, um because it could be seen as suggestive. I don't know. Oh, for sure. And it it was different then. Like...

Speaker: I remember, and I think I've shared this with you, whenever we very first started doing this podcast, I remember it coming on and my mom being like, ah you know, like that show, it's so, you know, ne ah dirty or nasty or whatever language you want to use, you know, and it was because of the adult matter and how free it was you know like it's just that's the way that it is

Speaker: And um yeah, it's just a different time. Yeah, that's it. It's just different times. And friends suddenly, you know, pushed out some some ideas that were a bit novel and a bit different for the time. And maybe this just falls into that category. I don't know. But yeah we are ready for a round of bamboozled. Kate has gone through all the questions. And only one of my extras was also in yours.

Speaker: Oh, it was my number three. Yeah, so that that's the only one. um And I cannot remember who goes first today. It's me. It's you. All right.

Speaker: All right. So my question number one, what's the name of Emily's other boyfriend?

Speaker: It's in my notes, and I'm im pretty sure it's Colin. It is Colin. Nice job. One of my best friends in school was called Colin. He is nowhere way to be found on the internet. He's not on social media or anything. We have lost touch, which makes me sad. I think of Colin once in a while um and hope he's doing well. haven't seen I saw him once when I went home because I found out where he worked, but that's been that's been a while. So Colin, if you're listening, get in touch.

Speaker: I have a call in too that I grew up with. That was my most very best friend and moved to whatever I was in like fourth grade.

Speaker: Right. Moved away. it was very sad and don't know where he went either. Oh, how crazy. So if that call in is out there. Yes.

Speaker: I, I know i he had a baby sister. Like I think she was even younger than my brother. And we I saw his mom like years late, a few years later, but like an embarrassingly long number of years, but he was like my best friend. I love that. We both had the best friend Colin. I don't love that they both, you know, we've lost touch.

Speaker: Maybe. the baby Yeah. These Collins will show up on the subject of Colin. We'll get back to bamboozled. They just dropped a new season. If you have not watched Colin from accounts,

Speaker: I think it's on Amazon. They've done two seasons. Now I'm suddenly panicking what streaming service it's on. It might be Paramount. Very, very funny Australian comedy.

Speaker: um Oh, okay. Calling from account. I won't ruin it, but it's about a guy and a woman who basically meet by chance and kind of don't want to like each other, but they do like each other. They have a common a common interest that I won't tell you what it is.

Speaker: Colin from Accounts, great, great show. Okay. That one is. Yes. All right. I am up one, nothing. Your question, your first question is, speaking of speaking of friends that we had in school, where is the kid from that Monica hung out with in junior high? Hang on.

Speaker: Calling from a council. That is completely my fault for bringing it up a new team. I know, right? This is all on me. It's very, very funny calling from accounts.

Speaker: Okay. But shall repeat the question, don't you? Thank you. Yes, please. Where is the kid from that Monica hung out with in junior high? Oh, man. It's another country. Yeah.

Speaker: Was it Denmark? Denmark? It is not, you get another shot, it's Mumpets, this doesn't really give it away, but it's Mumpets, like, what was it, sour cream on everything. Yeah.

Speaker: Wait, oh. I think, we're feeling, we're feeling out. Wales? No, it's a country that's been in the news a lot for kind of sad reasons. You're on the right continent.

Speaker: a kid from i remember and he says oh is that why you because she's talking about falling in love with somebody from another land blah blah blah and then he says oh is that why you spent all that time with that kid from dad gum

Speaker: is it and uh it has a k in it it does Isn't that crazy? way Oh, it's not Ukraine, is it? Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. You got the answer without even knowing it. Yes. Is it really? Wow. The Ukrainian kid. Yes. The Ukrainian kid. Dang. I don't know if you should give that to me. think. Okay. I'm feeling it.

Speaker: What did Chandler lose that might be down the drain? Was it a flip-flop? Right. well Yeah. No, I have can honestly say I've never tried to put a shoe down the drain, but even a flip flop that you might be able to fold in half, that seems like it would take an awful lot of work.

Speaker: I had to work this out in my brain and my ah I wondered, you know those really thin, crappy flip-flops that you get at the nail salon whenever they like do your nail? Yes. I have seen them. Yeah, I know what you're talking about. And I wondered if it wasn't like something that like a flip flop like that. That was like almost paper thin and it just went down the drain and maybe they have the kind of drain you have to have it stopper for. and it doesn't have a net or anything like that.

Speaker: And Chandler was just at the nail salon not that long ago. And was he getting his toes done too? Because I remember him getting his nails. Yeah?

Speaker: You might be ah you may have just uncovered something there. Maybe! Yes. But who knows? But yeah, I was like, what the heck? Yeah, that's an odd thing to have to have said.

Speaker: Your second question, what is the name of the hospital Phoebe goes to?

Speaker: Oh. It is four words. You know, and again, I'll give you a little later. Something something medical center. Sacred at Heart.

Speaker: No, but that's a great, solid guess. It is, unfortunately, the Beth Israel Medical Center. Never, never would have. How did you know that? Where was that? Right before Phoebe gets the sonogram, the kind of transition scene is an outside shot. A shot of it. Of the hospital. I missed it.

Speaker: Israel Medical Center. i'm so I think it's a real place. Like it sounds. Oh, it was. It closed last year. ah But it was a real place in Manhattan. All of that.

Speaker: um yeah oh well yeah i think so i'm not going to get into googling that too much but it looks like there may be another one with the same name in new jersey uh interesting yeah there we have it all right let's see what is your next question for me All right, what's Chandler's mug? oh what color is Chandler's mug in the first, it's the first scene? Yep, I thought about this after we'd watched. I thought, you know what? I got the Etch-A-Sketch, but i did not did take out the mugs. So I'm going to have to go.

Speaker: feel like I guessed this last time. Go with yellow. No, dang, it's blue again. It's blue Which is why I asked him because I told you I wasn't going to anymore. Then I was like, it'll be really funny because it's the same question. I overthought it. thought, well, it'll be a different color this time.

Speaker: Yeah. ah But now instead having the blue mug down in the um down in the coffee shop, he has it up in the apartment. He has one thing. love that. And it looks the same mug. maybe just They probably do end up bringing bugs back and forth, I would bet.

Speaker: I would imagine. As often as they're there, I can see that happening. um My next question for you is, what gate is Emily's flight leaving from?

Speaker: no. Just on some big signs in the scene where she she leaves. Is 23? It's not. You're not a million miles away. a

Speaker: She's thinking hard. 27. Oh, if you just got the other direction, now it ended with a seven. It's 17. Dang. Okay. Well, yeah how about this? What's Emily's flight number?

Speaker: It's in my notes because I Googled it to see if it was a real thing. Turns out it was the real flight number, but the opposite direction. It's the London to New York flight code.

Speaker: I'm trying to see. So they're like, it was a real flight, but they just, they got it the wrong way around. um which or it Or it was foreshadowing.

Speaker: Let's go with it. I like the foreshadowing. I like that. I think I might know, but i could be off by hundreds. Is it just flight nine It is. It is. All right.

Speaker: Nice. Yeah, because it's like flight 10 or flight 8 or something is the is the one from JFK to London. All right, my fourth question for you.

Speaker: More bo geography. um Where does Joey suggest that Ross move to in order to play hard to get?

Speaker: Ross says, well, she already lives in London. And Joey says, then you go to

Speaker: Japan. you You're getting the point, but he the names the city in... No, he names the city in Japan. yeah Tokyo it is, yes. Where they sell plenty of Ikeban for men, the lipstick.

Speaker: Oh, my. Yes. Yeah. yeah Yeah. All right. What color are the pillows on the girl's couch? All right. This next episode, I'm just watching for all the colors.

Speaker: Um... Well, we saw multiple times in this yeah episode. Oh, yeah. And they stand out. Yeah, and I did not pay attention. um It's a pretty relevant color.

Speaker: I'm going to have to go with purple. You would be correct. Yes. Nice job. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Yes. Yes. All right. in My final question for you. After the Knives, what is the second part of Phoebe's Plan?

Speaker: ah her saturn dealership of course yes yes yes i did a shallow dive into a saturn cars oh man i had a saturn i was gonna ask you had one i did and it was cute it was cute it was gold And it had the third door that like popped out like this, boop, and a teeny tiny backseat. So I would didn't have to drive everybody around everywhere. I think that's a good thing, isn't it? yeah you don't have the big car. Let's see. I've just got one extra question for you. What do you have for me? Same. All right. Why don't you go first?

Speaker: All right. So who came up with the name of Phoebe's new business? And what is it? And what was the other choice? Okay, i I may get them muddled up. It's definitely Rachel.

Speaker: And I think Phoebe says relaxi-taxi, and then Rachel says relaxicab. Like? Taxicab. taxicab. Oh, that is better. Yeah. That's right. thats Very good.

Speaker: Well, I'm getting a slight bit of ah of of ah friendly fight friendly revenge almost. What color is Ross's phone? He has a a landline in his bedroom when he answers the phone to Emily.

Speaker: Quite a distinctive color. Is it red? It is not red. Okay, I know Emily's is like a cream color. Yes.

Speaker: When does he talk to her on his phone? Well, he kind of falls asleep with his head on the foot of his own bed and then she calls and he's kind of startled and waking up.

Speaker: um Oh. And then and then i think she says... Yeah, and then that's whenever she tells him that about Colin. Yes. And then she thought hops on flight nine and comes on back. That's right, and she does indeed.

Speaker: Ah...

Speaker: Let's see. I've never seen a phone quite like this color, I don't think. Blue? And you've nailed it. Blue it is. Oh! The same as Chandler's mug.

Speaker: Yes. There you go. Nice. Yes. Okay. All right. Well, let's see. Where do we start? We start with, ah I never know quite how you pronounce it, because I think I have it embedded in my head that it's Traeger, but it's Trigger.

Speaker: Right, Trigger? Yes. yeah yes And it's one of those things I think logically I know that, but my head I always say Trigger. He is, as you mentioned, snaking the shower drain um with a lot of, a what was he, verbal exclamations and gusto. That's the thing, gusto. and Chandler's watching TV. I can't remember what he's watching, to be honest.

Speaker: Joey comes out and just grabs the remote and changes the channel, and there is some some some adult entertainment on the television that they were not expecting.

Speaker: um I do love Trigger's line of he just comes out and goes, whoa, she's all kinds of naked or something. Yeah. I like him. i like his delivery and his little sad story. Uh-huh. It was, I thought, very well done. Here's the thing that i did find online. In the hourly scripts, Chandler and Joey were supposed to accidentally receive a free premium cable sports package, but the writer, Will Calhoun, suggested adult television to create a hilarious physical dynamic when the guys refused to turn off the TV out of fear of losing the connection.

Speaker: So it was meant to be sports. Yeah. yeah huh yeah interesting yeah well and it's funny because yeah do we pay for this yeah no we don't even pay our cable but right it's like oh yeah why why chandler leaves joy evidently in charge of the cable bill doesn't seem like a wise move yeah fair yeah it's really wild Let's see, we're still in that apartment and i guess it's like, don't know it's the next morning or if it's later. um

Speaker: But Rachel doesn't want to watch this while she's eating. um So they kind of negotiate. I think they turn the sound off. I do love the protective bubble that they come up with.

Speaker: Yes. Nobody touched the air around the TV. um And if it wasn't achy enough, Phoebe then says something about... um Well, Phoebe comes in with a giant baby. Oh, that's right. That's right.

Speaker: I loved how the obvious answer for not yeah lugging the table around is to get a different job. And the job that she responds with is a doctor. So like a doctor.

Speaker: Yeah. I mean. What? It's the next logical step. Right. Going from masseuse to a doctor. I don't know. It's a yeah the way Phoebe's mind works. It boggles and amazes at the same time.

Speaker: Yes, yes. yes yes um But that what is on the television reminded her she needed to see her OBGYN, which just, ew.

Speaker: um I did notice she looked at her wrist when she said that as if she had a watch on. I did not see a watch. I rewound it. and I was like, I don't think, I think she yeah when she was getting ready for set, she didn't put on her watch.

Speaker: um yeah we go over to the boys park apartment and ross comes sad sack ross but i guess he's got a bit of a reason this time um emily she has left so he's feeling down this speaking of oogie this this scene monica i don't know basically going on that he could live at her fantasy of meeting somebody from a foreign land and spend their life together. I think maybe later on it's the icky bit, actually.

Speaker: And basically, Ross... Oh, yeah yeah. Yeah, later on. Because it starts off, because I'm like... Really? Why? But that's yeah, no, it's right at the end whenever she's like, oh, never mind Yeah. Yeah. Don't be weird. Yeah. Monica gets gets gets far too weird. But Monica does realize that Ross actually loves Emily.

Speaker: and That he needs to go to the airport. And then, yeah, just wrote, she gets weirdly descriptive about her brother in big letters. She needs to cut it out. It's Monica getting carried away here.

Speaker: ands But it she blames it on to Yeah. Yeah. Not good. No. No. But oh I don't know. Because it we'll get whenever we get to the end of the episode i want to talk about Chandler and Monica.

Speaker: Because they're my favorite. I have a note in here somewhere about the two of them. and Maybe it's already passed. Maybe missed it. Where they're kind of cuddling in the big chair. Nope, that's towards the end of the episode. I just noticed that i was like, oh, that's so nice.

Speaker: Yes. And that I don't know. And that's, it's, she's, I don't know. i don't know if they planned that or not, but like she's being all romantic again. you know what I mean? And it's obvious that she's ready to be in a relationship.

Speaker: yeah I like to think that it was done deliberately, whether by the writers or the the actors, who knows. that In my mind, it makes me happy to believe that that was just a tiny little tease of foreshadowing.

Speaker: who yes yes yes um we head over to the obgyn office um rachel's gone with phoebe and they don't just hear heartbeat but they hear three three um um uh did you notice the name of the obgyn okay no and i was looking for it Okay, so now I get I noticed the name and then pulled this off the internet. So I haven't done my research. But it's Dr. Dr. Obermann, which is the same name as Carol's OBGYN. And it's yeah also the name of the male OBGYN.

Speaker: Okay, where did you get the name off of her name tag? You know what I don't remember. i can't um i might have Googled that scene if I couldn't quite see it.

Speaker: It was all in a bit of a rush this morning. um See, I wonder if it's if if it was a name tag or a sign on the door. Right.

Speaker: ah Because, yeah, we've talked about this name before. Yes. We've talked about this. And so I wonder if, If it was a name tag on the doctor, that would have been a set piece.

Speaker: But then if it's not, i wonder if it's not the doctor's office, the same doctor's office that um ah that Carol had.

Speaker: and Because you know women, like we share doctor's names and things like that. And you end up in the same office a lot of the same a lot of the times. And I wonder if that's the like head doctor.

Speaker: Right. I wonder. Yeah. Or, you know, again, I like to, in my head, I like to pretend that it's actually like a a little tribute to somebody's real OBGYN who perhaps delivered their child and and that kind of stuff. I'm just having a quick look now, actually, to see if I can see it. Again, this is terrible podcasting.

Speaker: Because I noticed it somewhere. I'm wondering if I noticed it when was reading about, no you know, it is, you can see on her name tag. Under a name tag.

Speaker: But yeah, the name tag is white on a white jacket. But you can see Dr. Obermann. See, I bet you it's the same piece. And I like to think that as well, that though there's a reason that that name was used. Yes. But I bet the set piece was just reused. Absolutely. cause this yeah yeah we And it does it looks like it says OBGYN underneath, so it would make sense just to, all right, we have an OBGYN.

Speaker: Go grab the name tag. There you go. Yeah. Or maybe that's the dude's wife. Who knows? Who knows? I hope so. But this is the first time we find that, yeah, it's going to be triplets.

Speaker: Yes. Yes. Okay. And then there was a cut, you know, whenever she's like, actually giving birth to three babies isn't that different than giving birth to one.

Speaker: And then she goes, well, what do you know? And then she goes, have you ever had triplets? And the doctor goes, well, no. She's like, oh. And she looks at Rachel. She's like, I'm going to use that a lot.

Speaker: And I was like, oh, that's so mean. i yeah that's she what Phoebe was a little... um Like, what was the thing where the where Dr. Oberman says, we talked about the possibility of multiple births of Thebes, like, I'll hold on to your card, basically, or something.

Speaker: Oh, yes. Yeah, like, I don't know, thought Phoebe was a little... A little irritable, which is completely understandable. I get it. Just a little out of character, it felt like. Well, that one, I didn't necessarily feel like it because she said, you know, have we ever, have we discussed multiple births?

Speaker: And she's like, you know, well, let's let's do this one and then we can talk about another. I suppose. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know. i thought i liked that whole scene, but then that ad at the end, i was like, ooh, that was a little spicy.

Speaker: That's kindin that kind of, I love it. we yeah We go to Central Park where Phoebe's going to break the news to Frank and Alice. um They come in to see how the appointment went.

Speaker: And again, a nothing line. It's a throwaway joke. But when Phoebe says something like, you knowt you see three people walking down the street and you think that's nice. And Frank, yes. Like he's done that every day for his entire life.

Speaker: Yes, and Alice is just kind of like, what? And then ah yeah and he's like thinking about it. Yes. Yes. I've got some good news about this scene in a minute. It's one of my favorites with Frank. I quite like Frank as a character. I think he he brings a a fun dynamic to the show. um they're They're very excited. They get worried about the expense after that initial surprise wears off when Frank's finally got his band. He's ready.

Speaker: And when you then Phoebe gives them the reality check. Oh no, back to happy, back to happy. Back to happy. And then he's been thinking ever since they found out, which has been about 15 seconds. good drop His delivery of, you know, he's going drop out college, refrigerator college, like he's in the FBI or something, you know, just the very serious, oh yeah, refrigerator college.

Speaker: He's going drop out and get ah get a career. um So I didn't. Give up on his dream. give up on his dream he's always loved fridges and things that melt as old Frank I forgot to write down when I read this but there was an interview with Giovanni Ribisi who plays Frank in 2018 this was his favorite scene for Frank in the entire show oh And it was because of the way that luci lu he said Lisa Kudrow ah balanced Frank's manic panic with a warm maternal a calm maternal warmth. So he was able to play off of Phoebe. So it's his single favorite scene in the whole um the whole Friends universe.

Speaker: which Oh, that's so sweet! Yeah, and it was because of the way Phoebe balanced what he was bringing to the table. So... oh Yeah. That's sweet. I love that. Yeah, it made be really happy because, yeah, it's a it' a good scene for Frank, that one, I think. um We head over to the airport. um Emily is leaving on flight 009 with her massive Toblerone. If only you had somebody that purchased a massive Toblerone for you the last time he was in the UK. me! I do!

Speaker: I do, I do, I do. Yes. You do. And that was a giant toberlone. It was huge. Yes, everybody in my family enjoyed snacking on that thing. We kept it in the fridge. Good. Yes, I was back in the UK in June, May into June, and thought, well, what am I going to get for Woolison? It has to be a massive Toblerone, literally purchased in London, had to be done. Yes. Yes. I'd forgotten about that until I watched this episode. was like, oh, the Toblerone.

Speaker: Yes, that Joey so desperately wants. He is all about it. Yeah, the flight is 009. It's interesting because I need to dig into this. So Virgin Airways, Virgin virgin Atlantic, excuse me, they sort of sponsored a lot of this bit of Friends. Right. Like when all the crew and stuff came over, we'll get into this at the end of this season to film in London, Richard Branson said, basically, I'm going to help you guys out. I just want a cameo on the show, which he did.

Speaker: um that this this flight number is a Virgin Airways flight number so I'm wondering if they'd already already made that deal where he was going to be helping the show out oh I wonder because it yeah wasn't just a made up airways like Yemen Express from a few episodes ago Like, it's for real.

Speaker: I just wonder how deep the planning with Virgin and Richard Branson and all of that went. um Yeah. need to Need to look into that. But, yeah, it's flight nine going the other way, and then i didn't write it down. But, yeah, it's like ten or eight or something was the one. But, yeah, but Ross runs into the airport and gets a little nervous, but tells Emily that he loves her, and she responds with,

Speaker: Thank you. Thank you. yes Thank you. Yeah. yeah Possibly, what i wouldn't say the worst response, but far from the best.

Speaker: Oh, yeah. I feel like that is the classic worst response. Yeah. Like, I feel like this isn't the only TV or movie that has had that response and then the person spirals because of that response. It must it must have happened. Yes. But yes, but it makes me laugh.

Speaker: Like all of this makes me laugh because she's just like, a here, you know, she wants to give him something. so she gives him the half eaten giant candy bar. Yes. And then kind of makes the light of it. Like I can only take one carry on anyway.

Speaker: And I don't know. I just... It's just weird. But then she's so... I wish I didn't hate her. Right. Because thinking about the last two episodes and then this, she's actually funny and sarcastic.

Speaker: And I kind of enjoy her. So I was having this dilemma because it didn't really occur to me, even though I know the storyline. Is she cheating on Colin with Ross?

Speaker: I don't know if we know. You know, this yeah, I don't know. So it just got me thinking and I was like, but I kind of like her. Like she's, there's some funny stuff. yeah and yeah the whole thing about stealing the victorian doorknob in the last episode and then the you know it's just she says things that are kind of shocking but then if you listen to it it's actually hilarious yeah you know yeah and so i i'm enjoying the character this this go-around

Speaker: yeah but Yeah, but then all the stuff that happens next, I don't like. Yeah, we've got a lot of Emily to get into over the next, i don't know, six or seven episodes, I suppose. Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker: we go into the girls apartment. rachel Rachel is singing the theme to one of the movies that Joey and Chandler have been watching. a play on Good Will We'll leave it there. We'll just leave it there ah for our younger listeners. um But then she's telling Chandler and Joey that joe that a Joshua doesn't like those kind of movies.

Speaker: Joshua. Joshua. It's impossible just to say Joshua. has been Joshua. Yeah, Joshua. They kind of call him out on all of that. Yeah, they too Yeah. They are not believing it. And I think it's at that moment where Phoebe comes in.

Speaker: And ah did she get did she announce that she's having triplets or maybe they've already spoken? Well, hang on. yeah Because Rachel leaves.

Speaker: Okay. Because she's all freaked out. And so she leaves to go and talk to Joshua about if you really think that supermodels are too skinny. Yeah.

Speaker: That's right. Yes. And so as she leaves, Phoebe walks in and then Monica says, hey, so how did it go with Frank and Alice? Right. Okay. So my assumption. That's how that.

Speaker: Go ahead. There we go. No, sorry. i interrupted you. You're absolutely right. That's the missing piece. She's already clearly been back because then she's gone to see Frank and Alice. um so let's see yes so phoebe she's panicking about money for frank and alice she hopes chandler um can help her with inside inside her trading but that's the last but what can he get for her a free whiteout Free whiteouts, yes. Which is such a just over and done piece of office supplies. Right, okay. you know what mean? Like now it's the whiteout thing that's not wet. So it's funny because Whiteout, I'm assuming is, I forget what this term is called. come We're two teachers here. When you give something a name, but it's actually like the brand name. um yeah Yeah. That thing. I'm assuming Whiteout is that, which it's the same in the UK, but it's a different name. It's called Tippex, which is the brand name of whatever Whiteout actually is.

Speaker: Yeah, like the paper correcting stuff. Yeah, paper correcting tape. The ink correcting stuff. But not tape. Not tape. Yeah, that's right. came with a little brush. okay It came with a brush yeah and then you had to like blow on it.

Speaker: Yep. And then whenever I, for funsies in high school, you would paint your nails with it. Yeah. So that your nails were white nails and you could write on it with pen.

Speaker: Yeah. And that was so fun. Probably exactly the same, like literally the same chemical compound. We just had two different names for Heck yeah. Yeah. Yeah, wonder what's happening. Okay, I'm super interested in this, actually, because the inventor of Whiteout was Mike Nesmith from The Monkees. His mother really was the one who invented Whiteout. But then if...

Speaker: um ah correction fluid liquid paper there we go correction fluid yeah it's like a okay so it famously known as yeah okay betty nesmith graham who was mike nesmith he was the tall skinny one from the monkey right i think i can picture him yeah okay yeah the one that always had a hat on but not peter tork okay

Speaker: yeah And he, yeah, that's so weird. Right. So I wonder... that's ah That's a funny little between the monkeys and Whitehead. Who would have thought it? that's ah Yeah, that's just... Yeah, and and that's a ah piece of random knowledge that I have because I knew everything about the monkeys. I was going to say, you that's right. We've talked about them before, right? That's right. I i saw them in um in concert a whole bunch of times. weird okay yeah that's exactly it just sent deanna a picture of tip x which yeah i'm assuming it's the same thing yeah it's white out liquid paper yeah that's it how ah interesting so then i wonder if she it's correction fluid that changed the way people fix i'm curious like if tip x was off the same like

Speaker: I don't know if you call that a copyright or a yeah a ah whatever you call that. I wonder. Yeah, there's there's there's lots of odd things like that. they're They're probably the same company, but they have two different names because there's a trademark or a copyright in one country that doesn't exist in the other. Like I've never actually looked at the whole TK Maxx thing. Have we ever talked about that?

Speaker: um So, and I always mix up which one's which. But here there's TK Maxx, right? the storm man TJ Maxx. In the UK, it's the same company, but TK Maxx. There's one letter different.

Speaker: Oh, how weird. Don't know. Don't know why. But this odd little, um my favorite one is, um and this isn't copyright or anything, it's just an an adjective, but Pringles are exactly the same.

Speaker: But here you have barbecue ones, and in Scotland you have Texas barbecue ones, which I just like. I just like the fact, living in Texas, that they give Texas a nod.

Speaker: On the barbecue Pringles. Of course. Yeah, which is kind of fun. yeah's lots of lots of funny things with with names that are just slightly different. Okay, are you ready? i have the answer.

Speaker: I'm ready. It was her that created the product. Okay. And it was liquid paper, and it was generic the generic name is Whiteout.

Speaker: Okay. Okay. And TipX is the prominent equivalent brand name in Europe. It all comes from the same patent from her.

Speaker: Okay, that's why I was suspect. Look at that. yeah but The monkey's mom. That's fantastic. Yeah, ah that's fun. We're just just spreading knowledge and information.

Speaker: There you go. This is what we do. I love it. um At this point, Ross comes in and he explains what's happened or what happened with Emily at the airport. Monica, I think is a bit down in the dumps for a split second, but then realizes it's actually all part of the story and the plan and that she's going to call. She's going to call.

Speaker: um And Ross is just kind of, I just wrote down looking for advice. He doesn't know what to do next. And Joey and Chandler are just, no. Not helpful. No. Well, they're just like, it's all over. It's all over, man.

Speaker: It's over. It's all it's it. mean, what were you trying to get her to do is Joey's solution. It is his query. um ah Which is fair.

Speaker: and But Monica will not let it go. No. When she latches onto something like an idea, she's going all out. Yes, and I get that. Yeah, I can see that.

Speaker: We go over to the boys' apartment where, of course, Monica and Rachel are living temporarily. They need a break from what they're watching on television. And I do love the fact that they want to watch cartoons.

Speaker: Like just the opposite end of the spectrum. Yes, yes. Specifically, um they need cartoons. Phoebe comes in. she's She's developed a great financial plan. Don't you hate it when you have to use a regular steak knife to cut a can? And...

Speaker: And she's she's not really sure if she had to pay for these knives or not. I'm sure she is, but she doesn't want to admit um what she paid for these knives. But for some reason, Saturn dealership, which ran from a mid 80s to about 2010. Tell me about your Saturn that you owned.

Speaker: It was gold. It was three doors. It was so cute. I got it, or my parents got it for me whenever my super awesome teal Chevrolet Corsica died everything. Oh, no. The transmission fell out and it wasn't worth fixing. I was almost done with college, so they bought that car.

Speaker: And then whenever I graduated from college, I got the Jeep. And then the so the gold Saturn went to my brother. Very nice. Who took it down to Corpus Christi. And he drove it until the transmission fell out and it wouldn't go. Right.

Speaker: so But it was a good car. it went, oh, my God, everywhere all the time. Like it it got a lot of miles. It just occurred to me that you sold your Jeep. And last time we spoke about cars, you were like, I think, considering what to get next. Did you get another car? Yeah, I did not. I did not. I am currently driving Joseph's Bronco.

Speaker: Right. um Which is great. I enjoy it. It's I just, you know, whatever. ah Joseph drives the Hummer. We bought a car for Fred to take to college. And right that gets excellent gas mileage. So I don't know what what we're doing right now. Joseph really, really wants a truck, but I think we might get rid of the Hummer if we get a truck. I don't know.

Speaker: I'm cool driving the Bronco. Well, we will talk off the air, but I'm not in the market to get a car. Mine is is is yeah it's fine, but it's also almost 20 years old. And I'm starting just to think in the next few years.

Speaker: Yeah. What's going happen? And I like the look of a Bronco. But, uh, and they're now starting to hit the used market more and more because just cause they've now been around a few years. So they're kind of in that price range where I'd feel a bit, uh, comfortable, but we'll talk about that. Um, afterwards, but you know, we, we could get a, some kind of friends discount from Phoebe's Saturn dealership if it happened. If it still existed. existed. know what was it another, like, 90s neon? What were those? Those were Dodges. Those were Dodges. Do you remember those? I had a Dodge Neon, one of the first cars I bought here. Did And looked like a little smiley face car yeah driving down the road. it was so cute. Those were cute. Yeah. That was... that was

Speaker: Gosh, that was a long time ago. Yes. My fun cousin Amanda, she had a red one, and I thought it was so cute. We took a couple of trips in that car, too. I just realized I'm making that up. It wasn't a Dodge Neon, but it looked like one. It was Kia something.

Speaker: Kia something. I've forgotten what it was, but it was kind of sporty. It looked a bit like a Dodge Neon. There you go. we have a Dodge Caravan now and it is the greatest car.

Speaker: Yeah. Kate's had that for six years, seven years, bought it gently used. She's had a long time, yeah. Yeah, think maybe six years. Is it still the same one?

Speaker: Yeah, she got it in 2020, I think. um I think. And it and you know it's it's been back and forth to New Jersey a couple of times, which is over 1,000 miles each way. Yeah. We've taken it everywhere, Kansas, back forth, everywhere. We've had zero knock on wood issues with it. um ah just She is, after five years, still thrilled with it so much. you know, Dodge wants to sponsor the podcast, we would not object. hey Yeah. That's right. Yes. Yes. Yes. 90s era Dodge Neon. That would be kind of awesome, actually, wouldn't it? Thank you.

Speaker: We go over to Ross's bedroom. um He's kind of falling asleep on the foot of his bed and Emily calls, She feels terrible about but how she acted. um And this is where Emily tells Ross that there is somebody else. I'd written down that this was bad form from Emily, but maybe it's not. I'm now kind of second guessing. I think it depends...

Speaker: more on the situation. um You know, it just Colin know about Ross. She and Colin, serious. Were they not even dating, but they just were going to decide when she gets back? You know, who knows what the situation was? I think maybe I've been a little unfair in my initial reaction to Emily.

Speaker: yeah Yeah, because i don't I don't know. And then she just spent an eight-hour flight, nine-hour flight thinking about that.

Speaker: right And it's not like she could pick up the phone and call or send a text like you can now. so As your darling wife, we sent text messages whenever she was in ah she was on the plane coming back from where?

Speaker: Last place that she went. It was to the UK. Yes. Was it? Whenever we were texting with her? Me and Hayley? i don't I don't know when you guys were to. Was it Italy? No. You guys had just, she just went up.

Speaker: It was whenever y'all went to go to New Jersey. That's right. We did go to New Jersey in July. And then she was on her way back. And Haley and I were texting her. But she was on the plane. And I was like, don't remember that we can do that. So two thoughts on that. One, Monica says maybe she'll call from the plane.

Speaker: No, I didn't fly much. That was so expensive. Right, right. That was my first. That's not a casual conversation. um Maybe she's rich. We tend to fly American Airlines and with our Advantage number whatever, we can get free Wi-Fi, which allows for the texting.

Speaker: Kate's really good about, all right, I'll figure out how to get on. You got to download the app and you got to get your advantage number and you got to this. If I'm on a flight, I kind of don't care. And I'm like, it's quite nice not to hear my phone going bing, bing, bing. i I'm okay with that. You know, I've already downloaded my podcast and my book and my whatever else.

Speaker: It's kind of nice to be not connected. But I, you know, but I can also, it's nice to be connected. So I see both sides of it. Yeah.

Speaker: So let's see. We're back in the girl's apartment. Emily doesn't know who she wants Ross or this Colin guy. Okay. Hang on. Yes. Yes. Okay. There's a cut scene right there. and Not a cut scene, but a cut little bit because, you know, they're all sitting there and he's, she doesn't know which one of us she wants me or this Colin guy.

Speaker: And then he goes, so I told her when she figures it out, give me a call. And then they were like, so like, what are you going to be doing?

Speaker: Waiting for the phone to ring? right And then they kind of go back and forth. And he's like, okay, so explain to me. So is this going to be like, you're dead You're waiting by the phone and you're dead or what?

Speaker: and you know And then it goes. Okay. isn And then Monica interjects, you know, this isn't how it's supposed to go. There there's there can't be the other guy. But yes, they can because then Ross has to go and fly to London, prove his love. yeah Monica is not giving up on her brother's love story here.

Speaker: and and And then does Ross kind of say he got so mad he tried to put his fist through a wall but hit the door and it swung open? Yeah, well, he's like, yeah, if you if but you hadn't if I hadn't let you talk me into this, um I wouldn't have put my fist through that wall.

Speaker: And so the Chandler's like, oh, you put your breath through the wall? He's like, no, I missed it. It hit the door, but it opened really hard. That's right. And it was huge door. Red Ross. Red Ross went Red Ross and missed the wall, which is quite a hard thing to miss.

Speaker: Because if I'm going to, you know, I don't have a habit of punching walls or doors, you'll be glad to hear. That's good. If I was going to punch the wall, I'm staying away from the door frame because that seems like knuckles to a two by four and all of that. that i I'm looking for a soft bit of the wall what I'm thinking.

Speaker: Right. Or let's just not. Or just not. I mean, really, that's the best option here. Let's not put holes in walls or make doors fly open. um I agree. um we're over We're still in the we're back in the boys' apartment, right? Monica and Chandler, this is where they're cuddled up. That's right. Yes. I wrote down foreshadowing in big letters. ah you know Might not be, but I choose to believe.

Speaker: I am too. That are planting little seeds. Because they're just so dang cute. They are. But it cracks me up because they're like, oh okay, yeah, you told her you loved her.

Speaker: She didn't say it back. She called Told you there's another guy. so yeah, go ahead and go to London. And then I think he says like, that'll scare her real good or something like that. Joey's suddenly becoming logical and rational and seeing it for what it is.

Speaker: um Yeah. Yeah. It's kind of came to crazy. I did have a thought well couple of thoughts actually about this next scene. Phoebe comes in. She's got this new master plan.

Speaker: she's going to open her own you know massage place okay where did she see the van and they just like recommandeered it okay so this I just scribbled down didn't realize they still owned the van yeah Yeah, like, I guess they just left it.

Speaker: be There's no way, like, parking in Manhattan, and even in the 90s, you can't just leave a car on the street. But, like, it's just the expense of that, let alone anything else.

Speaker: Like, where has this van with the, they were going to paint paid the baguette over the sword, as Phoebe says. the way says baguette. Yeah, where has this been? Do they still own it? I'm assuming so.

Speaker: um Yeah, like, and then what in the world? She's like, yeah, we' we're just walking down the street and saw the van you used for catering. Right. Like, what are you talking about? Where are the keys?

Speaker: Right. Yeah. Who's maybe they sold it and the person who bought it is selling it again or something. I don't know. Who's got money for that? They don't have any money. That's the whole point. That's the whole, you're exactly right. The other thing that confused me was she said that Frank is going to help her. Don't they live like upstate, like hours away from Because Frank certainly used to, he met his teacher there. So unless they got together upstate, because Phoebe drove hours in her cab to get up there. So how's he going to help with this business? Unless they've moved to the city. And if they've moved to the city, we should see them more. Right. Yeah.

Speaker: Yes, a little confused about that. This is where we get into the, ah the was it, RelaxiTaxi and RelaxiCab. I love how upset Phoebe gets with Rachel. You did not! You know about the names. Yes, her hormones are making her a little bit like spicy.

Speaker: And I'm here for it. you're You're enjoying this. I do quite like it. um So Rachel says it's relaxing taxi. Then Phoebe says, no, you came up with relaxing cab. But she doesn't quite put the right emphasis on it. Right. So then Rachel corrects relaxing cab like taxi cab.

Speaker: And Phoebe goes, yeah, that actually is it's a bit better. um Ross calls. He is in England. um Emily isn't home. So he's, I think he's in a phone box at this point.

Speaker: And then he ends up kind of stooped on her step, but he's going to get the next flight back. um Again, just just throwing money at this um because he's obviously not bought a return ticket, I wouldn't think, because he's like, I'll just get the next one back.

Speaker: But he wouldn't get that next one back if Emily was there. So who knows quite um how this works out. Riding around on airplanes is wild business.

Speaker: That's all I'm saying. Wild, expensive business. Not not cheap and never ah rarely goes quite how you think it will. um I've been very fortunate to fly standby quite a lot over the last five years or so, bit more than that. And I'm just now of the mindset of I get there when I get there.

Speaker: Yeah. Been delayed enough, you know, had to change planes last minute. I did have, this is completely off the subject. I did have a unique experience when I was flying standby from Kansas back to Dallas six weeks ago, and there was one seat left.

Speaker: So awesome. I get the seat and they printed off my boarding pass. I went up the jetway, got on the plane and there's somebody in my seat. And long story short, there was a lovely family. They could not have been nicer.

Speaker: They had forgotten to scan their sons, who was two, their son's boarding pass when they got on the plane. So it looked like there was an extra seat when there really wasn't. ah then The two-year-old and I had the same seat. Now, they were lovely. They kind said, we'll put them on our lap.

Speaker: we're sorry, we we want to get you to Dallas too, come on with us. I mean, they paid for the seat. They couldn't have been nicer, but of course I knew and and the flight attendants were not allowed to do that. And of course, I was like, no, I'll just get the next flight down, which I did a few hours later. Um...

Speaker: But yeah, yeah think they they were really nice people. You know, they had a couple of kids and just one of the kids, they hadn't scanned the pass. It was, I think yeah that was a first having to, you know, in the in the world's nicest way, get kicked off a plane. Seriously, that that was very nice. That was a first for me. um But we we were at the girls' apartment, open the door and Emily is there.

Speaker: Okay, so there was a cut. A cut. I love these cuts. Okay, they're sitting at the foosball table. Right. And Joey and Chandler are playing Go Fish.

Speaker: And Chandler asks Joey, do you have any eights? And Joey goes, no. And then Monica goes and takes three cards out of his hand and throws them down on the table in front of Chandler. And Joey goes, ah and she goes like that. with I mean, it' great podcasting, whatever that face is. Deanna's pulling off a great Courtney Cox over here. ah Yeah, yeah, but ah come on now. Then there's the knock at the door. oh so Chandler is giving Joey a look and then he walks up, opens the door then he's, are we in London? Yes. It's a great line. um She's there to talk to Ross. I do. And she's, she's Ken doesn't want to tell anyone anything. um You know, she just wants to speak to Ross.

Speaker: And I think then she realizes. Joey is obsessed with the. He loves that Toblerone. Toblerone. I keep saying it wrong. But whatever. It's a weird word. It is. It is a delicious chocolate bar. I've not had one in a long, long time. But they are.

Speaker: I've had one in the last six months. You've had one you made one this year. um And I guess ah Emily calls her home. Ross is kind of on the stoop of the stair at this point. and emily must have the world's loudest answering machine um because ross can hear essentially on the street that she is talking to him um not i think this was the question we both had to score out wasn't it um the name of emily's neighbor mrs newman Mrs. Newman. That's one of those names. I've so i've only watched the series. though I've watched it through once. But if you see Newman, it just reminds me of Seinfeld. Okay. You know. that yeah um But yeah, Mrs. Newman. um

Speaker: And Ross ends up running back to the phone box, the red one that was there, and calls her back and they tell each other that they love them. Now, we'll notice I did notice that when Emily was in there,

Speaker: the The entertainment on the television, the television was off.

Speaker: Yep. Because I did wonder. Yeah, it was like there's this quiet conversation, intimate conversation with Emily and Ross. And then I thought, well, did anyone ask them like to turn the sound down on the television or was it still muted from when Rachel was in there?

Speaker: It was not on. Oh, yeah. And then we end up in the in where in the girls' apartment. And I just wrote down, the boys decide to turn it off. You know, it's time.

Speaker: But then immediately tried to turn it back. Yeah, because they're not living in reality anymore. Right. Oh, yeah. Oh, that's right, because he went to the bank and the... Yes, and then there was a female pizza delivery girl.

Speaker: oh it's it's female pizza delivery guy, which I just love the way that Joey calls her female pizza delivery guy. Oh, that's right. Yes. Yes. yes Yes. yeah Yeah.

Speaker: Yes. But they, are yeah, that that was a, it was a funny, funny, and, um, Let's think. So that this was not the end of my episode. Okay. So sometimes when I'm looking at looking up things, I will see that there was an extra scene at the end.

Speaker: And if I see that, I do everything I can to not find out what it is. So you can tell me I've got no idea what this is. Okay. So they are at the back at the doctor's office.

Speaker: getting in on a sonogram or an ultrasound and it's frank and alice and the doctor and phoebe right and they've got the screen and they're showing the three babies and they're oh yep there are three of them one two three yay you know again and then frank stands there and then he's like i like the one in the middle the best And Phoebe Alice both look at him like, oh my God. like And then he goes, what?

Speaker: i Don't worry. i won't tell the other two. And then that's the end. And I was like, ah like that's sad that that that was cuts yeah cut. it was cute. It was I'm kind of a fan of Frank, like the character, what he brings to the show. um He's got so, so many good lines. ah On that note, who would be your Gunther Central Park this week? Phoebe,

Speaker: yeah Yeah. She's the MVP. Yep. i The main storyline of this was Joey and Chandler and the stuff on the television. There was not much there for me in terms of acting. Yeah. It's it's got to be Phoebe in this one.

Speaker: Yep. yeah I'm slightly slightly scared to ask given the title. How are we measuring this week's episode? Toberlone bars. Of course it is. How?

Speaker: ah to Oh my gosh. Toberlone. You got this. ah Yeah. No. Toblerone segments. Yes. yeah There you go.

Speaker: Seven and a half. Seven and a half. Toblerone bars. I like it. i'm more good Or sections. Either way, I'm going to go with eight. I enjoyed this one. I think I enjoyed a little more than I remembered because of Frank and Alice.

Speaker: Really just Frank, but you know they come as pair. But yeah, i think i think a solid date for me. it was It was, again, better than I remembered this one.

Speaker: Absolutely. Yes. um All right. Any final thoughts this week? ah ah No, it's just a great episode. I'm excited about the next one. Yeah, me too. We are getting into, I think we said this last episode, really interesting Friends territory. Next week is the one with Rachel's new dress. So I am looking forward to that. But as always, everybody out there, thank you you so much for listening to the Purple Door podcast.
