Yahoo! Welcome to Games Over Plastic. This is a very special episode of Games Over Plastic. Is this the first time? Yeah, it's first time we ever we're ever going to do like a movie spoiler cast, kind of. um i mean, we did we did like the the movies where we watched those bad movies. That was that was funny. And I... um But this is like the first time where we're gonna do a movie spoiler cast. We're going to it on the Super Mario Galaxy movie, which we all have seen. We saw it. All of

us saw it the day it came out. it was um I found it very enjoyable. as This little slight, slight little um little spoiler for you guys. I enjoyed it. um But yeah, we're here to talk about it. And here to join me, as always, are my two fabulous co-hosts. We got the man, the myth, the new Pokemon card collector.
00:01:30

Hodge. Hodge, how you doing? I'm doing good. Yeah, before we start recording, I showed you guys a bunch of Pokemon cards I got that i I showed a lot of them on this show last night or last week, but my collection has grown substantially. But yeah, I'm loving it. But yeah, I will obviously get into it, but I enjoyed the movie as well. And I'm excited to talk about with you guys. So yeah, let's get it going. up When Hodge was showing those cards, I almost left and went down to my local card shelf because that's how much I was having FOMO because I need some cards now. I really want to go out there. But that's for another time. Joining us as all as always as well is not daylight, but midnight.
About the Show: 'Games Over Plastic'
00:02:14
Speaker
Midnight, you doing?
00:02:15
Speaker
I'm doing well. Thank you. I'm happy to be here, Sean. And surprising, actually, that I'm here because I'm not always I'm not a huge Mario or Nintendo guy. And I'm also not the big film buff. But, you know, i decided I'm going to go see the movie, too. And here I am.
00:02:29
Speaker
And did I watch the prior film? No, here didn't do it. that But I watched this one. So I went into it completely blind with no train of reference. But I'll tell you what. But out' the yeah, well, timeline. I watched this one. And ah let me tell you, I did enjoy it ah pretty pretty well. Pretty well. We'll get into it. But I'm happy to be here.
00:02:51
Speaker
It's me. We're happy to have you. Um, Yeah, no, um before we get into it, though, this is Games Over Plastic. This is a weekly show. It's been weekly for about almost about two months now, right? Critique: 'Super Mario Galaxy Movie' Title
00:03:21
Speaker
of them are evergreen, meaning you can listen to them whenever you want. um with the exception of a couple but even then you can probably still listen to those because they're freaking bangers um if you played the new resident evil game uh you can listen to an episode that i am not on because it's a spoiler cast i've not played resident evil but according to those who have played it and listened to it they said it was pretty awesome so you should go listen to that um yeah so you guys ready to talk about the super mario galaxy movie yeah
00:03:50
Speaker
No, I'm not. No, we're down We're actually going to talk about the first ones. Sorry, midnight. All right. I'll see you later. Yeah. Yeah, I'm ready. Let's do it. one thing One thing I do have to say is the title Super Mario Galaxy movie, not the biggest fan of the title.
00:04:05
Speaker
ah I agree. Because they took a lot of aspects from like Sunshine with bar but Bowser Jr.
Fox McCloud's Premature Spoiler
00:04:14
Speaker
They took a lot of ask up aspects from Odyssey. And then you had like, I get where they're going with with Galaxy because obviously Rosalina's in it and you know you have the Lumas, but the Lumas were the first one too. Yeah.
00:04:26
Speaker
But, you know, we had, you know, the inclusion of the Pikmin and Fox McCloud. Fox McCloud. So, um yeah. One thing I didn't like, though, was that they they spoiled the Fox McCloud thing like a week before it came out. Like, come on. now How awesome would that have been if you went in there not knowing?
00:04:44
Speaker
Who spoiled it? Nintendo themselves? Yeah, Nintendo spoiled it themselves. like They tweeted it out. Idiots. Why they do that? know. But one thing I will say, I'm very surprised how much screen time Fox actually got.
Post-Credit Scene Speculation
00:04:58
Speaker
Yeah, he got he got a little bit, yeah. About six or seven minutes. i i really I really expected him to be just a quick cameo. like I expected them to be like, hey, can you take us up in your ship? And then like there'd be a joke where they blow up a ship or something and then move on. like But no, he was part of the mission for a good chunk of it. so He did a barrel roll.
00:05:19
Speaker
You did? i I did laugh where he's like, oh, didn't, you know, was saying like something about messing up because I have a toad for an engineer or whatever, it just cuts to it. I thought that was really funny. do a barrelel Yeah. No, I was um ultimately surprised. And i mean, you guys saw the post-credits scenes, right?
00:05:38
Speaker
Obviously. They're kind of setting up their own. Oh, well, they're setting up like a basically a Star Fox movie or some type of something with Star Fox. Yeah, definitely. Yeah, because he's guessing it i'm justing like a TV show.
00:05:51
Speaker
Yeah, because he flew off and is like, I got to go do something with my people or whatever. Like, so they definitely set up like, I mean, because it also wouldn't have been a post credit scene if like it wasn't leading to something.
Theater Experiences and Movie Pacing
00:06:03
Speaker
would have just been in the movie. Yeah. Yeah.
00:06:05
Speaker
Yeah. yeah Oh, yeah. I guess we're going full spoilers right up the gate. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, we are. You know, I didn't I didn't see the post credit scene, actually, because I ah I searched on i searched on Bing ah Bing slash co-pilot. And I said, you know, is there is there a post credit scene here in this movie? And they said no.
00:06:27
Speaker
And so I got up and left. They lied to me, apparently. That's because it's not Google. I guess. I don't like Google. I don't like using Google. They're evil. but like Microsoft's not evil, of course.
00:06:38
Speaker
Oh, of course not. Yeah, not evil at all. Anyway. I like Copilot, though, as far as the AIs. It works pretty well. Except it lied to me, so maybe it didn't. Anyway. Well, they reveal Princess Daisy in the postcard scene, too. Okay. She does not speak, though. Okay.
00:06:55
Speaker
Yeah, it was like, yeah, there isn't ah any real post credit scene. It was like Mario's just like, thanks for playing my game or something. And that's it. I'm like, OK, I'm like, I'm out. Liar. Maybe it was time about the first movie. I don't know. Was there one in the first movie?
00:07:08
Speaker
ah Yeah, I'm I can't remember. i Was it in the first movie where they have the Yoshi egg or is that at the end of the movie? That's a post-credits scene. They have the Yoshi egg. okay yeah Damn you, co-pilot! Anyway. Yeah, i did I did find it funny, speaking of Yoshi, that's one of my few complaints of this. Because i actually, i again, i really enjoyed this movie. I liked it better than the first one. i Same, same here.
00:07:32
Speaker
Yeah, and... I will say it was funny with the Yoshi. I was annoyed because they very quickly introduced him and he was just suddenly part of the gang. Like there was really no buildup to it, but it was funny because at the end of the movie, obviously Yoshi's egg is in New York and you see it start hatching. it's like Oh, yo she's going to be the next one. And obviously they scrapped having New York in the movie. And so they just had to do this really quick montage of him, like going through New York and then rushing back and getting out of there. yeah Because because they I'm guessing they probably planned on it being New York again, which was one of my biggest. I had two really big complaints with the first movie. It was they spent way too much of their time in the real world. They didn't even need to have the real world. I don't know why they did that. It
Character Introductions and Meta References
00:08:15
Speaker
could have just have just been Mushroom Kingdom from the get go. And two, they overused pop music rather than Mario music in the first one. And they toned it down a lot in this one. They actually used Mario music, which know. They a lot of... one thing I will say is they used they did use a lot of movie music from Mario Galaxy, actually, itself. Because i actually... yeah um i don't know if you... get Did you guys... Did you... Obviously, Midnight, you didn't watch the credits. But I was specifically paying attention to the credits to look at the... Like, what they credited. And there was a lot of credits to the same...
00:08:46
Speaker
composers and people who worked on the Mario Galaxy soundtrack. Oh, nice. Yeah. That's cool. So that was really nice to see. As far as performances go, I think Donald Glover did a really good job as Yoshi, to be honest. like I thought he did a phenomenal job. I love... I'm a little biased. I do love Yoshi. I do think it was a little funny, though, that he just instantly joins the gang. They do have a like a meta reference to it. Toad does like kind of make a... He's like, oh, so we're just... All of sudden, he's just part of the gang now.
00:09:13
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. I think, though... I remember i once read or like saw an interview with an actor or writer or something. Or no, it was I think was Matt Damon and Ben Affleck were on Joe Rogan's podcast or something. And they said that basically movies today, they force you to like keep reiterating stuff in the script because people are looking at their phones and they're not paying attention. So they need to constantly remind it like they're not paying attention. and so i think that's kind of why this mario movie it's the first one was way worse about it this one's was paced better but the first one was basically like we're doing this then we're doing this then we're doing this like every scene was just moving forward like it didn't flow it was just seen scene scene scene that all just seemed disjointed and that's kind of how i felt the yoshi thing where like they go to that place i think that was in so that was in mario odyssey right that that area the yeah it's the first second kingdom of mario odyssey yes Yeah. So it was in Mario Odyssey. They go to that place and they get Yoshi and it's just, he's instantly their friend. And I was like, oh, that's just that tempo thing of like, you have to keep it moving fast for the kids who all have ADD nowadays. And so was just like, Yoshi, he's our friend. Let's go. And then they move into the movie. So that was, that's like a complaint of mine. But at the same time, it's like, again, it was paced way better than the first movie. The first, first was not paced very well at all. Speaking of kids, how was your guys theater experience?
00:10:34
Speaker
You guys have any annoying kids? Because I did. There was not a ton of annoying kids in mine. I don't know. I don't know if I'm just so much the point where I'm surrounded by kids five days a week, almost all day, that it's not like, to me, it's just part of my life. So I don't know if it's like that. If they were annoying, I don't really know if I noticed it.
00:10:56
Speaker
Yeah, it's it's it's so funny. I went with two of my friends, one of ah one who is a teacher. And before the movie, like any time we get quiet, some kid would go six, seven. And so my buddy is a teacher is just like, God. But then me and my friend are just like, what is happening? Like, because obviously we don't hear that all the time because we we work, you know, not around kids. And it was but the funniest thing was right before the movie started, like, you know,
Recognizing Game References
00:11:22
Speaker
the lights go down and it's starting the.
00:11:24
Speaker
you know it's about the movie's about start a kid goes six seven and you hear another kid go shut up that's awesome yeah that sounds about right sounds like a classroom shut up um so i was sitting in the back row right and about two or three seats down, there was this little family, right? There's like four of them. And there was two kids. And I swear to God, these little bastards talked for the entire movie, the whole movie. They're talking like narrating the whole movie and be like, oh, this is going to I think this guy will that happen because this oh, he did this because this happened. Oh, this and this. And like not I don't I parenting this days these days fucking sucks. Like parents these days yeah are horrible like not one time during the entire movie that the parents ask the kids to shut the fuck up.
00:12:13
Speaker
Not once. They're inside a movie and these parents are just letting their kids talk audibly, like loud enough for other people to hear for the entire fucking movie. And I wanted to say something.
00:12:24
Speaker
The only reason why I didn't say anything was because it was the Mario movie. And I realized that I'm in their territory. This is a kid's movie. So I so i just i just I realized I'm in his territory. I just need to just accept it. But if we were in a normal movie, if we were in like a regular movie, I would have told the kid to shut the fuck up but because it was a kid's movie. I was like, all right, man.
00:12:43
Speaker
Yeah, we're in your kingdom. So but yeah, these parents suck. Like the parents should have been like, keep it down. We're in a movie, you know. Yeah. fuckers and Yeah. I didn't hear anything during the movie other than obviously laughter during funny parts, but cause I saw it in the XD theater, which is obviously the huge one with a really good sound system. So it was loud enough that if any kids were talking, I couldn't hear it. So yeah, yeah.
00:13:05
Speaker
It was cool. I still, I still enjoyed it though. yeah Yeah. Yeah. I really wonder how many references some of these kids got because like, like the super scopes in it. And I'm like, how many kids like actually know what that is like that? you know what i mean?
Future Movies: Smash Bros. Speculation
00:13:20
Speaker
that and, like, the Rob robot. Well, a lot of them know it from Smash Bros., the Rob robot. Yeah, i guess that. And and the Super Scope in Smash, but I don't think the kids know what, like, that is. Hmm.
00:13:31
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, like, Mr. Game & Watch, I guess they would... They understand to the point of it being a Smash Bros. thing, but they definitely don't understand it, like, what Mr. Game & Watch was. Like, those old games. Like, I know, like, there's a few of my students who, like, know that stuff, but a lot of them don't. a lot of them think, oh, Smash characters. Although, I did have a joke. calm There was one kid who did yell in my theater. He did yell this. This was pretty funny. He goes, when's Marth showing up? We need more Fire Emblem characters. Ha ha ha ha ha. That's a lie. That was pretty funny. You yelled that.
00:14:03
Speaker
Yeah, that was me. Yeah, of course. My kid yelled it. Yeah. um No, but yeah, overall, all I found it very enjoyable. I liked a lot of the references. It is it is a little like a this is like ah an advertisement for all like our Nintendo IP and they're definitely setting up some larger universe movie. Do you think it's going a Smash Bros movie?
00:14:27
Speaker
problem Well, ah apparently they just came out to say that's not happening, but who knows I think because the way they said it was basically like, there's no way that the Sonic movie and the Detective Pikachu movie and the Zelda movie you are all going to come out. It's like, yeah, no one's thinking that. It's just everyone thinks the characters are all going to show up in a Mario movie because I just don't see how they don't do it with...
00:14:48
Speaker
They introduced Mr. Game Watch, the Pikmin, the Rob Robot, um Star Fox. They put so many characters from Smash in there. Donkey Kong is already in the first. you know yeah Donkey Kong is the first. Thank God he wasn't in this one because I did not need your movie.
00:15:07
Speaker
na guys Yeah, that's probably the worst part of the first Sounds like I missed out seeing that from the first movie. Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong was the worst cast. I just didn't want to watch the first movie, man. I had other stuff I preferred to watch, so I was like, eff it. You know what I think they could end up doing? I think they could end up doing, like, maybe not, like, a Smash Bros. movie, but, like, a team-up movie that does, like, the campaign from Super Smash Bros. Brawl, like, the subspace emissary, and just make that into a movie with maybe not every single character, but, like, a certain number. Maybe, like, I could see, definitely, could see Pit doing it in the next one. Definitely.
00:15:47
Speaker
Kirby. Yeah, see i the part ah after I saw Pikmin and Star Fox show up, I was like, oh please have Kirby. I just wanted to see Kirby so badly, but obviously he didn't show up. in Well, I thought in the original movie we were going to see Kirby during the Mario Kart section.
00:16:03
Speaker
Oh, yeah. When they go to Rainbow Road, I thought that Kirby was going to show up there. Yeah, and with the post-credits scene being Daisy, I felt that was such a letdown. It's like, okay, another princess is here. would have rather it be like Wario or Waluigi, or I was even thinking maybe Master Hand shows up to do a Smash Bros. thing. Yeah, because with all the Smash Bros. references and characters, I was like, oh, they're going to 100% do it. Yeah, you're just going to see your freaking Master Hand coming or something the Thanos of
Character Dynamics and Critiques
00:16:37
Speaker
the Mario universe.
00:16:39
Speaker
But no, that didn't happen. So I don't know. I don't know what they're gonna do in the future, but i I do think that they will lead because these movies are making so much money. This one's probably going to make more. I i made my – I still remember one of my predictions at the start of the year was that this was going to break – I don't know how much money, but I saw it as it was said is going to make a lot.
00:16:57
Speaker
And it seems to be outpacing the first one. So who knows? And so they're obviously going to expand this universe. They're not just going to do Mario. They're going to add what they can to do this. If they did a Kirby movie, would you want it in the animation style like it is or like the old Kirby cartoon? Because that Kirby cartoon had a great animation style.
00:17:20
Speaker
I think it could look good in this setting. I think it would look good like this too, but like that old Kirby cartoon, that animation. Yeah. I mean, I would love, I love that stuff too, but I, that appeal to the young audience though. Yeah. I would want to see that, but yeah, it would definitely be in the Mario movies. Would the six, seven audience want that?
00:17:39
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. No, the seven, or six audience would know. But yeah, I, I, I think it'll, uh, here's what I think. All right. What? And I have infinite knowledge of the Marioverse, you know, because half the stuff you guys have talked about, I don't even know what you're talking about because I didn't play most of these games. So this is what I think is going to happen. Okay. Okay.
00:18:01
Speaker
They're gonna eventually make a Smash Brothers movie. They're gonna build up to They're gonna create a cinematic universe like Marvel, okay? So we're gonna get we're gonna get a Kirby movie. we're gonna get We might even get a Fire Emblem movie. Wouldn't that be great? I don't even know.
00:18:15
Speaker
because they have to introduce the Fire Emblem characters. And it's funny, even as a Fire Emblem fan, I don't even know if I want that, honestly. Because I just don't know if they could do it justice. I feel like it would it would be corny. and like it just I don't know if those games would translate to a movie.
00:18:27
Speaker
We need a freaking Ice Climbers movie. yeah just just There you go. Colin loves la Ice Climbers. that' just there you go I don't think that kids would give a shit about Fire Emblem.
00:18:38
Speaker
I don't know. just don't think it would translate well. They'd love that. Star Fox a cute fox man. They're going to love that. So I think they're going to stick with those ones that are like the cutesy ones. Yeah. Fire Emblem is kind of more like kind of more like a Final Fantasy movie type deal. You know, it's got like a fantasy story kind of, I don't know, Kingdoms fighting. Yeah. you get Snake in it, it'll be great. Get a nice Snake cameo from Metal Gear comes in out of nowhere.
00:19:04
Speaker
I'm sure they could get Sonic. I'm sure they could get Sonic in the movie. The thing about Sonic is, are they going to have him like he is in his like movie? Cause that's freaking weird. That's a different animation style for sure. That's freaking weird.
00:19:16
Speaker
Well, I mean, they could animate them in their style. Yeah, Sonic was in Wreck-It Ralph, so... I'm sure Sega would sign off on putting Sonic in the Smash Bros. movie. They have a decent... It's Paramount who owns them, too.
00:19:30
Speaker
Oh, isn't Nintendo Paramount? Aren't they with Paramount, too? paramo to Yeah, because it's just Despicable Me. Isn't that Paramount? think is. Lumination who is... I think it's Paramount. i't freaking now What do i know? Um...
00:19:44
Speaker
Also, did they reveal that Princess, that Rosalina and Peach are sisters. That's like, come on. not That's not true. Play the games. Is it not true? I don't know. They never say it in the games. It's true to me.
00:19:56
Speaker
They never say in the games. But, of course, there's 100% more story in this in these two Mario movies than in any of the Mario games. Except
Movie's Entertainment Value
00:20:04
Speaker
for Mario Galaxy 1, which somehow had a story.
00:20:07
Speaker
like Why are they introducing new princesses? Nobody cares about the princesses. like their Their role is just to get captured so that we chase them. Well, mean, we knew Rosalina was going to in this. like That was pretty obvious. um Yeah, and I actually thought i liked how what they did with Rosalina because they...
00:20:22
Speaker
At the start of the movie, they show how powerful she is because she's you know fighting that robot thing. But yeah then she still ends up losing. And thankfully, it was like a we have to rescue Rosalina thing because that that was ah another one of my many complaints of the first movie is that Peach never had any problems in the first movie. She was like perfect. She fought everyone perfectly. She had no issue. Like there's the there's a scene where in the first one where Mario is trying to do this like training obstacle course so like train. And that was pretty. I actually really like that scene.
00:20:50
Speaker
And, and, well, the scene was funny because he kept failing stuff, but then at the end, he's just like, she's like, no one gets it on the first try. And he goes, did you it first try? And she's like, well, yeah. it's like, oh, because she's amazing and Mario sucks. Like, it was very, and then, like, she saves herself from Bowser at the wedding and stuff. She just never had any issues, which just just goes against it. I think they just, all they wanted to have that girl power moment and stuff, but. Rosalina, I thought that was good. I thought Brie Larson did really well as her too. saw her in an interview. She seems to be very thankful that she's in these movies because she was kind of she' was having a bit of an attitude when she was playing Ms. Marvel. And so I think she's a little more grateful to be in movies again because she kind of fell off the radar for a bit. yeah But yeah, she was good. I thought all the cast was good. The Bowser Jr. was a good voice. I know the actor, the dude from Oppenheimer. I can't think of his name, but Benny something.
00:21:45
Speaker
Yeah, he was he was really good, those Bowser. I dude, I was dying laughing at the the puppet scene when he's doing the puppet scene for Bowser Jr. That was so funny. The little hand was dying with that. I think the cast overall did a great job. I don't have any problem. I remember when they announced Chris Pratt as Mario, I'm like, this is going to be awful. I think he's done a great job as Mario. Yeah, he has. Yeah.
00:22:10
Speaker
I mean, as good as it can, because if you had a whole movie where he's talking like this, it would be 90 minutes of absolute pain. yeah Like, it would be so bad to listen to that the whole time. So you got to do. I like that. They kind of made it like a family thing of like his family always goes but who like it's like so it's not like his his voice. It's just kind of like a family cheer kind of thing, which which I really enjoy that they do that or. I i also think that they did a really good job in the movie um not going to like a million different galaxies. Like they they really like confined it to, think it was like like three main like galaxies like from supermark from the Super Mario Galaxy game. They weren't trying to like, oh we're gonna go to this one, this one, this one, this one, and have each one be on screen for like two or three minutes. No, like we stayed really, not grounded, but you know what I mean. We stayed in these three main galaxies almost the whole time, which was good.
00:23:04
Speaker
Yeah, the only one of the problems I have that i two things with it is one they kind of when you said it like it doesn't really it shouldn't be called the Mario Galaxy movie. it It kind of I felt that way also because like the most they showed of the galaxy other than obviously the plans they were on was. when they were traveling to the planet and they just kind of were going past planets. It's like this is galaxy. And it's like, yeah.
00:23:28
Speaker
All right. Well, that but then the other thing was again, this was another I guess one of those bad pacing things is when they go to that B planet. Oh, the Honey Hive. Yeah, and the Queen is like, you know, you must be punished. And Bowser, you know, sacrificed himself, says, I will take their place. And the joke thing of like, I am stronger than 100 And he like flexes and breaks his collar. Like, it was pretty funny. And then instantly the collar was back. Did you guys notice that? I saw that. I did. Yeah. Yeah. And then, but then instantly the next scene he's already saved. Like there was no real sacrifice to that. And then all of a sudden he's instantly bad again. Well, he has a little bit of like, they're my friends. So he tells him don't kill him.
00:24:10
Speaker
Yeah. But then like, he's in just right away. He's bad again. So I felt like that was kind of poorly paced as well. But again, it was way better pace than the, I disagree. Yeah.
00:24:22
Speaker
i think that was true I think that was handled wild then Instantly, like, saved. Well, yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, that part, yeah, I understand that. I think they handled his transition fine, though. So, like, yeah.
00:24:36
Speaker
I think they handled his transition fine because he didn't actually instantly turn bad, really. um He instantly thought like he had to defend his son's dream or what he his son had built for them. That's what he said. He's like, I have to fight for this for my son. He had built the planet and everything that they had talked about. So.
00:24:52
Speaker
Yeah, I was really thinking, though, that it was going to be he stayed good and his son got disappointed in him and started doing his own thing. And then eventually he saw like Bowser's way of looking at it of like, we shouldn't do this. But instead, it was just Bowser went back to being evil. But I will say that's the root of Bowser. He's always evil. I mean, yeah, I know.
00:25:11
Speaker
Yeah. And obviously, but I was thinking like, well, you can have different villains in other movies and stuff. We did get Wart. We did get Wart. Yeah, I got more. Yeah. I mean, you could have ah King K. Rool or whatever because you got Donkey Kong in the movie. That's true. the King K. Rool. You could get. i mean, want it. Ultimately, I think we should have like a movie without Bowser and have like Wario as the main antagonist. Like. Yeah, well, that's the thing is like the end of the movie instead of Daisy, which was a horrible reveal. i it was just like, oh, look how awesome I am.
00:25:41
Speaker
It's Daisy and then Custa Black. It should have been like them at that planet. And instead of the monkey stealing stuff, it was like Wario and Luigi stealing stuff. Like, yeah, that's what i that's what it that's what it should have been showing that they were coming. Because, yeah, it's just I mean, I did love the the skeleton Bowser. Is that from po Dry Bowser or something? Dry Bowser. Yeah.
00:26:00
Speaker
Yeah. And that, that i like that whole thing, but I loved that when he was on the bridge, they did the, how they defeat him in the, yeah. yeah that was the calling in the lava Or when they, when they're showing the traps and they're watching on the screen, it's the 2d animation. but go through it I was dying at that. That was so funny. They do a good job of the references like that.
00:26:19
Speaker
Oh, yeah. That was really well That was like in the in the first movie, Hodge, when I know you're not a big fan of the New York, but when Mario and Luigi are running through New York, and if you like look at it, it's actually 1-1, World 1-1 from Mario Bros. Oh, I didn't realize it was the exact one. That Do you know what I'm saying? They pan out, and it's a it's almost like they're they're running sideways. It's like a two d side. like They're running sideways. If you look at that, it's the exact level 1-1. Just obviously the background is different.
Midnight's Personal Critique
00:26:44
Speaker
Oh, I didn't know that. I'll have to watch that again because I do love that it it cut to the 2D of them jumping through the city and like traveling stuff. but the worst cause the worst Well, the worst part of the New York stuff was one, the movie ended in New York. They should have just been gone. like Of course, they had to have the dad is proud of him moment or whatever, but I've said, I think I've said this before, even on this podcast, the scene where they fight the dog in the bathroom in the first one is one of the worst scenes. That's very illuminating. That is very. now you say that's That's illumination, like secret life of pets kind of crap. and It was so bad, but thankfully they didn't have that in this movie again. So I really, i really enjoyed
00:27:23
Speaker
Yeah, that they kept this one to like, because I literally before going into this movie, I said the same thing to my friend. I'm like, I hated that they used too much pop music and I hated how much they were in New York. And when we left, my brother or my buddy's like, it's like it's i obviously you weren't the only one with those complaints because that's the two things they scaled back. They did not do New York and they did not. They did like the Biggie Smalls when he's in New York, which was kind of funny. But but ah other than that, yeah, there really wasn't much pop music, which I which i really loved about this movie.
00:27:51
Speaker
yeah i Yeah, I love, obviously this movie is just complete fan service and goofiness for kids to enjoy, but i love, it's so one of those things like where we talk about like, there's that fine line between it being like corporate cringe and like a great hot homage to stuff like how Ashbot's a great homage to PlayStation history. Yes. And this is very this is a great homage to Nintendo history. space mean This is like Astro Bot Lite.
00:28:16
Speaker
yeah yeah yeah i i love every little and it's not like it's not so devoid of plot that it completely but like ah depends on the cameos or the the little easter eggs and stuff like it's it's just a little helpful thing of like the oh there's that oh there's that because that's the kind of crap i love it's like pointing stuff oh there's that i see that i didn't recognize that like i love doing that kind of stuff so I was surprised we got the more baby Mario, baby Luigi when they get turned into the babies. I yeah but i was surprised by that. i didn't think we yeah I didn't think we'd see. I thought we would see them eventually in like a flashback.
00:28:54
Speaker
Well, because they did that in the first movie. That's right. Yeah. of where Because they had showed that Mario was always protecting Luigi, even when they were babies. So I think when they did that, they realized, like, oh, crap, we need to find a way to bring back baby Mario and baby Luigi.
00:29:08
Speaker
And I was laughing when they all turned into babies and then they get turned back and Luigi's still sitting there crying. He's like, wait a minute. Yeah, that was funny.
00:29:18
Speaker
I have a question. Since you're not into the Mario games, have you ever seen like a about like dry Bowser like that? Like Bowser, like it's a skeleton dry Bowser. Have you ever seen that before? It seems familiar. Yeah, I remember fighting like skeletons and seeing skeletons and stuff in games before.
00:29:34
Speaker
Yeah, those are the dry bones. I just said I was just curious if you'd ever seen dry Bowser because I was from it. It felt familiar to me. I yeah just don't remember exactly. I didn't know if I was like, oh, my God. Yeah. Yeah.
00:29:45
Speaker
ah Oh yeah, I'm looking. but I forgot. For some reason i was thinking that was in Bowser's Fury also, but no, he's like this weird Ganon-looking Bowser in Bowser's Fury. Ganon-cat-looking Bowser thing, yeah.
00:29:56
Speaker
i The other thing about the post-credits scene... uh that i wasn't huge on the one where it was like starfox and a cuss of the jail is it felt it felt a little forced to me where they had like that nihilist star be the jail guard because he was like that really funny because that was like the funniest part of the first movie is that nihilist star where she's like the only thing i look forward to is the sweet embrace of death death it's like this cute little star yeah and then so he's the jail guard in the in the post-credits scene that i was just like
00:30:27
Speaker
like It was funny because obviously he's playing like the very like evil prison guard, but at the same time, it's just like, this just feels a little forced to put this character back in it. But,
00:30:38
Speaker
I don't know. i Again, that's just minor complaints. I saw that it looks like the critics' scores are very low for this, but the audience scores are pretty good. That's what I expected. I expected the critics' scores to be low and the audience score to be high. I really expected that.
00:30:52
Speaker
I saw a lot of people on like Twitter hating on this. like Yeah, I'm surprised it's getting as much hate as it is because, again, I honestly really like my cousin. i So I want my cousin and my friend. My cousin hated it, but he's a like a cinephile, so he like anything that's not... an Oscar nominated movie. He hates, uh, he, went did this he, he went into this movie thinking it was going to be like Oscar worthy. That's crazy. no he he, he, well, cause before we saw it, he said he rewatched the first one. He's like, this movie, the first one's terrible. i'm like, it's not terrible. It's just, but I will say each time I've watched the first one,
00:31:27
Speaker
since it came out, I've liked it a little less because it's really, it's not a great movie, but I still enjoy it. But this one, I actually, i came out, like the first one I came out of it, like, yeah, it was pretty good. But this one I came out of it, like, i really liked that. Like,
00:31:40
Speaker
then Obviously, again, i have my complaints, but i really I came out of it like, I'll watch this one multiple times and enjoy it each time. so yeah yeah i think I think I'm less high on it than you guys. It sounds like you guys really loved it. um I'm like kind of mid on it. um I did like the movie, but I would rate it like probably like a 69 on Midnight Critic, nice which is nice. Not 6.7? No, not forget that Get out of there. ah But yeah, i thought it was just I thought it was kind of mid, but i did enjoy it. like I wasn't mad that I went. You know what I mean? um at The first...
00:32:15
Speaker
the first like 30 40 minutes i was just like oh man i don't know if i'm into this but then it does pick up um and towards the end i was like okay that was satisfying you enjoyed that um so i don't think i would watch this again like
Game References and Integration
00:32:26
Speaker
ever but i did enjoy it enough like it had a decent plot it was satisfying enough um it was mario you know there was some cool cameos like with fox mcleod um you know i wasn't mad that i watched it like i said um it was like it was like on the pizza scale Let me see. For midnight on the pizza scale, this is just like a basic cheese pizza for me, honestly. Wait, it's not a mushroom pizza?
00:32:47
Speaker
Maybe cheese and mushroom, yeah. There you go. Like, I would eat this. You know, they they serve it to you, but you're working or something. I would eat this, but, like, I wouldn't be, like, super excited about Like, I'm not texting my friends, like, oh, man, I got this mushroom pizza at work, you know. Do you think that might have to do with your lack of, like – knowledge straight with nintendo yeah yeah i'm sure it would have been much better if i knew a lot of the characters and the the stuff because the stuff that i did know about i love like the the bridge scene like where they reenact the battle and he falls down the lava yeah i got hyped for that i thought that was sweet um and like seeing fox mcleod was like oh that was cool and like the barrel roll so if i knew more of the scenes in the moments i probably would have enjoyed it more uh to be honest yeah um so like do you know anything about wart like did wart do anything for you
00:33:33
Speaker
No, I don't know. don't know. That to me is so cool because they're finally acknowledging that Wart is actually a real thing. I don't even know what Wart is. It's from Super Mario Bros. 2, the USA version, the Doki Doki Panic game.
00:33:45
Speaker
That is so cool because Nintendo has never acknowledged Wart. Like, ever. Yeah, war Wart was the frog at like the casino level. that oh Oh, yeah, like the gangster frog. But was this is this is like that is so big that Nintendo is actually letting them use Wart because for about now 40 years, they have not acknowledged that he is like an actual Mario villain.
00:34:08
Speaker
Where did he come from? Super Mario Bros. 2, which isn't a real Super Mario game. Oh, okay. Yeah, that was that weird one, that side-scroller-like weird one. Well, they're all side-scrollers. It was like different ones. The one where you go up, it's Doki Doki Panic, which is a Japanese-only game. Just when it came to the U.S., they threw Mario on it.
00:34:26
Speaker
Yeah, I remember I played Mario Brothers 2, and i was like, this is weird. It's so weird. But it's weird because the only thing that they did not take for Mario Bros. 2 was Wart. Like, the Shy Guys were introduced in that game. They kept the Shy Guys. Birdo was introduced in that game. They kept Birdo. But, like, Wart, for some reason, Nintendo's like, no, who's this Wart kid? Nope, we don't know who Wart is.
00:34:47
Speaker
Wart is cool. I like Wart. So that's cool. Like, that got me, like, hyped. Like, the fact that he was actually acknowledged. Mm-hmm. I was surprised that... I always thought Birdo was a bigger character, so i was surprised it was a very quick like almost cameo of... like It was a side character. didn't... Birdo didn't say anything. doing Obviously, they did did the egg thing, like shooting a bunch eggs, but I was surprised there wasn't much more to that because always thought Birdo was a bigger character. sand you think about an I remember Birdo shooting the eggs. The thing about Birdo, Birdo's like Waluigi. She's...
00:35:20
Speaker
It. I don't really know what... i mean, it depends on the manual. What it says in the manual, it's like... i don't know. It's very vague what they say. because Depending on the game... um thats she well some It depends on the game because some of some of the manuals refer to Birdo as a boy dressed as a girl and other ones refer to it as a girl. it really It's very odd. It's it's very inconsistent. But um Birdo is a lot like Waluigi. They're only in spinoff games. like They're only in the party games, the sports games. The only non-sports game that Birdo has been in is Super Mario Bros. 2.
00:35:52
Speaker
yeah so it's got one more thing i i i enjoyed that love that part of the movie too that that planet where like the gravity shifts and stuff oh yeah that's right i dying when was dying when toad turned into like the penguin it was just sliding around knocking yagging all the bad guys over that's so funny or what yo when yoshi turned into the balloon and then just like bumped into powser thought that was so funny What is it with Nintendo and 2s? Because Link or Legend of Zelda 2 was also freaking weird. So that was back in the and NES days where they didn't realize that sequels didn't.
00:36:31
Speaker
They thought sequels had to be like like completely different. Because even if you look at Castlevania, Castlevania 2 is so different than the first one. and But then for the third version of them, they go right back to it.
00:36:42
Speaker
yeah yeah Yeah. The third is is like ah an all-time banger in both cases. Super Mario Bros. 3, one of the best of all time. ah Zelda 3 is is like one of the best. Link to the Past, one of the best of all time. yeah yeah It's is one of those things. it was like we They didn't realize... but like If you look at this the Mario Bros. 2 in Japan, it's it's literally the same exact game as the first one, just harder.
00:37:07
Speaker
Yeah, the... I was just thinking that that Legend of Zelda 2 Link's, or not Link's Awakening. It's yeah it's ah it's needed um Zelda 2, The Adventures of Link. adventure That's the one I was thinking of that was a side-scroller, right? zelbras kind of side side scroll area It's actually not a bad game. It's really difficult, though.
00:37:27
Speaker
I don't like that game. It's not a Zelda game. Yeah, it's... Sean, what do you want from the third game? Because you obviously had the bigger Mario movie.
00:37:39
Speaker
What game would you want them to... Because I don't think it's going to be like Super Mario... For example, Sunshine, the movie. i think I mean, I would love for them to be like, we're going on vacation to Delfino Island. And then they get there and it's like, like all hell's gone. to like I would love that. Would they just set it in Delfino Island? And they go to all the different worlds and and um Sunshine. like I would absolutely love that. But I don't think they're going to that. I think they're going stick more with traveling to all these different, like,
00:38:09
Speaker
universes only because you can get so much more variety. Like
Future Movie Settings and Character Ideas
00:38:12
Speaker
if you did like a sunshine area, like all the areas are pretty much very, like they're all tropical. Yeah. Whereas if you stick with going to different planets or different galaxies, um like you can do a lot of different things. I can even see them doing like a Mario. Like I know like Mario 64. I can see them doing something where like they jump in paintings and go to all of different places. Like I can definitely see that. And like that is how they could get away with like, hey, they they they see a painting and it's like ah Kirby's on it. They jump in and they're in like Kirby. Like I could so see that.
00:38:42
Speaker
That would be cool. Yeah. that would be good If they didn't have to rebuild the castle in the movie, i was going to say they could have easily done a painting thing where it's like oh there's this part of the castle where these paintings, they've come to life or something and something like that. But.
00:38:55
Speaker
That would be the, Sean, you're genius. That would be the perfect way for them to implement Fire Emblem because nobody wants a Fire Emblem movie because even even me, they wouldn't be able to do it. Like it just wouldn't work. But they could jump in a painting and be in a Fire Emblem world for like five or ten minutes to just get involved with like some more crap and then leave.
00:39:11
Speaker
They could also jump into a painting with Snake on it and then you're in dun dun dun dun. And then at that point they've been introduced and you're ready for smash. Yeah. And then the, the, the final fantasy world, they jump in. Cause cloud and stuff. rather but Oh yeah. They go to street fighter world too. You know, they go to Kanto cause Pikachu and the trainer. and pika Yeah.
00:39:32
Speaker
yeah um I don't know if they'd be able to get the rights. No, in reality, though, from like from like a third movie, I do want to see more like I want to see Wario. I want to see Waluigi. I want to see some type of like those characters that we like that we have not seen. I want to see them. I do want to see a couple more Nintendo characters too. Like I would love to see, like I said, I want to see Kirby in it. Like I want to see Kirby. Like there's a scene in, I'm going back to the super subspace emissary from brawl where Kirby and Mario are at an arena and they shake hands and it's pretty iconic, if they zoom in on it. um Like I would love that. Like Kirby and Mario to shake in hands. I honestly, though, I do think we're going to see for Nintendo characters. I do think we'll that we'll see in the in the next movie. I think we're going to see pit.
00:40:19
Speaker
I think we will see pit because I could so see them doing like something with Sakurai being like, hey, we'll put pit in this movie, pit and Kirby in it. You know, you go make a new Smash Bros game for us. I know he said you don't want to, but. Hmm.
00:40:33
Speaker
I could see also like ice climbers really quickly or something. That'd be like if they go to like an ice area or something. oh and they're climbing a mountain or something. You see Nana and Popo just climbing the mountain next to them. Yeah. i can guys they Maybe they help them up the mountain, you know?
00:40:47
Speaker
Yeah. yeah there No, yeah. hu I just literally, I just saw the the ending scene with Daisy. Was she literally doing the 6-7? No, I don't think she was.
00:40:57
Speaker
It looked like it. Anyway. I don't know. um The other thing I could see them doing, if they're going to stick with Bowser, because obviously I think they're loving and having Jack Black, and I don't think they're about to get rid of him. So I could see them doing the other...
00:41:14
Speaker
ah Bowser kids, but... Oh my god, the Kooplings? Yeah, I think... Yeah, I think... I can't remember. Are they his kids are they like family members? They are his. So it's weird. In Super Mario Bros. 3, they're his kids. But then they introduced Bowser Jr. in Super Mario Sunshine, which is his canonical son. And then when they re-introduced in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, that's the next game they're reintroduced in. They're not his kids anymore. They're like his like nephews and nieces. Okay, see, that's what I was going to say. If they were his kids in the games, I could see them being like,
00:41:52
Speaker
cousins or nieces or something like yeah yeah i think that's what they'll do because i think they'll do a whole i because i wouldn't be surprised i could see it's with it being illumination i could see them doing like a whole bowser family reunion section where he goes to his family reunion and that's where they all are and they they all kind of introduce like they just expand the bowser family to be the villains i kind of see that because i think That's a really good idea.
00:42:16
Speaker
I was, I was like, cause obviously they were escaping jail at the end of the, of the first one, or they were trying to, obviously they didn't get out, but with, um, I could see Bowser getting his body back somehow. I was dying laughing when he's like, let's go find my foot.
00:42:30
Speaker
like but yeah That was funny. That made me laugh really hard, but, uh, I could see him getting his body back and then them doing something like that where yeah they, I think, um, my, of the Kooplings, my favorite is Lenny. I love Lenny.
00:42:43
Speaker
I have to look him because I can't remember. also like Roy. There's two Roys in Super Smash Bros. Roy from Fire Emblem and there's Roy Bowser Jr. Bowser's kid. no I just always remember the one with sunglasses.
00:42:54
Speaker
Yeah. Shout out to Fire Emblem, by the way. Roy is the one with sunglasses. Yeah, Roy's the one with sunglasses. And Ludwig with his big weird looking hair. Yeah.
00:43:06
Speaker
so all i mean i could that That sounds hot. That's actually a really good idea. Yeah, that's honestly what I would think is the next step. Because obviously it was Bowser's first movie, then they introduced Bowser Jr., and so I could definitely see the Kubling as being the being the next movie but i i do want to see like wario and luigi because or waluigi sorry because i i think that would be the best and i really want i know they're not going to do this ah but because it would have to be its own movie here or whatever i want them to do a luigi's mansion like oh my god like that you know you know what be great like a luigi's mansion like tv series
00:43:44
Speaker
Yeah, I would absolutely love that because Luigi's Mansion is awesome, even though I don't think the games are like amazing. They're they're fun, but I don't think they're pretty fine. But yeah, but it's such an awesome concept. And they kind of teased it a little bit in the first one because he obviously goes to the scary planet and he's, you know, so i can't remember if he sees booze on that planet or not, if it's just this, the...
00:44:06
Speaker
the dry Koopa or whatever they're called. He just sees the dry Koopa. Yeah. And then the shy guys obviously as well. But yeah, I just, I think, but then with this movie, they also did the thing of like, he's not, not scared anymore. And obviously the whole thing with Luigi's mansion is he's terrified of ghosts. That's when they made, that's when they made Luigi his own thing. Like Luigi's mansion was the first game when they made Luigi actually different than Mario. They made him like weird.
00:44:28
Speaker
Yeah. Cause he was literally just the green Mario for forever. they this Luigi's mansion is when they made him weird. Yahoo! Mario! Mario! Yeah, I would love to see them do something with Luigi's Mansion, and then, yeah, obviously the Kooplings are... That's my prediction for the next movie. If Waluigi and Wario were in the next movie, I think they would have been the post-credit.
00:44:51
Speaker
But also, with Daisy... i don't All I know for of her is she's in Mario Party. like That's literally the only thing I She's originally from Super Mario Land, which is not the Mushroom Kingdom. It's Mario Ghost. It's called like Sarah Land. or sa It's pronounced like Sarah's Land. or sas Yeah, it's like Sarah's Land. um What else did I call it?
00:45:13
Speaker
Sarah Land. But... um That is what she's originally from. And it's like, that's that was from the Super Mario Land games. Like they get the two Game Boy games. So like Mario isn't rescuing Peach in those games. He's rescuing Daisy. um So maybe yeah yeah I can see them going there. But other than those games, the only appearance of Daisy is in the party games and stuff.
00:45:34
Speaker
Yeah, that's all I know her from. so I mean, it's it's it's one step ahead of Waluigi, like we said. Waluigi's only in sports and party games. these First game ever was Mario Tennis.
Final Thoughts and Future Speculations
00:45:46
Speaker
didn't know that. He was introduced because the reason, so I've done, I've read a lot about like why they introduced Waluigi. They needed a partner for Wario because of the doubles in tennis. Wario didn't have a partner.
00:45:57
Speaker
So they created Waluigi. ah Oh. Yeah. And he's the best. Wahh. He's a freaking hero. Yeah, because I just see them. They're such a perfect step. But, I mean, I guess they could be in the movie because if they go to Daisy, they could just make them people of that land, I guess. like they I mean, they could even they could even change it up where Daisy is almost like a bizarro peach, and so, like, Waluigi and Wario are bizarro Mario and Luigi or something. Like, I don't know. They could do something like Redcon it to make Wario and Waluigi from Sarisland.
00:46:34
Speaker
Yeah. I could see some doing something like that, cause obviously they changed the origins of, like, Rosalina a little bit and stuff. So, I don't know. It's... Kids won't care. know we get It's not like Mario lore is that deep, so can do whatever they want. The Yeah. cause yeah i was gonna say I was going to say a couple things that I thought of when you guys were going. Number one, I was going to say Daisy was the princess of the gingers. There you go, huh? Shout out. Your princess.
00:47:07
Speaker
ah What? She's a brunette. Her hair looks kind of red to me. butward Anyway, i'm I'm calling her a ginger. Anyway, and I was going to shout out to Luigi, man. Luigi was a great wingman in this movie, man, for Mario, man. Dude was like, yeah, go go get her, Mario. Go get her. She'd be lucky to have you. And then go ask her if she has ah has a friend for me. You know what I'm saying? made me laugh really hard. Yeah, there you go. Yeah.
00:47:37
Speaker
Luigi is a real one for that. that's so You want a Luigi with you at the club, at the bar. yeah Good wing, man. Go, Luigi. Go, go. But yeah, I mean, that's pay it's kind of the Mario movie right there. i mean we kind of talked about it. I mean, it's not like this deep, deep, you know, it's not like a deep message. It's, you know, it's Mario.
00:47:58
Speaker
small are you yeah again uh i i really enjoyed this movie i i will watch it again it's uh it's not like my favorite movie of the year i've seen way better movies this year already but uh it was it was definitely serviceable and went up when people were were going into it or coming out of it negatively i was like i honestly didn't understand it i understand the complaints there are it's not a perfect movie by any stretch but Obviously, kids are going to love this movie because it is a goofy, you know, fun movie. So but as us as older, older guys who are, you know, going to see a kid's movie, we're going have different outlooks on it. But yeah, I loved it.
00:48:39
Speaker
I don't know. thought it was greatest thing since sliced bread. Nice. Yeah, I don't understand why anyone would hate on it, even though I'm the lowest on it here. um I still enjoyed it. Like I walked out of the theater, you know, with ah a mild smile on my face. Like I had a fun time.
00:48:54
Speaker
um I probably won't watch it again. But i and I like I said, I wasn't mad that I watched it. Like I had a a good and experience. I certainly wouldn't go on Twitter and be like, this movie sucked. Like I don't understand the the hate towards it. You know, it's a kid's movie. It was a Mario movie. I had a fun ride. It was cool.
00:49:09
Speaker
It was fine. I'll definitely watch it again. I'll make my dad watch it. Should we pizza scale it? I i said but it was ah mushroom for me. Cheese and mushroom. I think it's i think it's a roasted red pepper and hamburger.
00:49:24
Speaker
Okay. That's a high tier, right? I'm going to let the audience decide, though. I'd go like a solid... Like a solid buffalo pizza. It's not my favorite. It's good and it's out there and I enjoy it. but I can't believe you eat pizza with buffalo. on' Buffalo?

Let us know what you want to see in the Super Mario Bros. 3 movie, whatever they're going call it. But yeah, that's pretty much it. I mean, guys, nice short episode. It's probably our shortest episode ever, maybe?

I think so. I don't think we've ever been under an hour. so That's good. I like having a short one every now and then. Why not? Give the audience a break. They got busy lives. I'm used to having a short one. Thanks, everyone, for listening. I mean, this is any final words, Midnight?

It's a me. Midnight. Watch. ah Yeah, just I enjoyed the movie. i I want to know how people feel about our spoiler casts. Since obviously we've gone weekly, we have a little more range to do things that we enjoy. So if you like these spoiler casts, let us know, and hopefully we'll do more video game movies as they come. But yeah, I enjoyed this. I enjoyed the movie. I enjoyed chatting about it with you guys. I knew I wanted... We had to have Sean on the episode because i like we needed your Nintendo history because you know more about these games than me at Midnight, obviously. so

Maybe they gingered her for the they went they the opposite. yeah ginger Gingerification. Yeah. They went the opposite of the ginger side that they normally do of removing all the red haired characters. There you go. There you go. Yeah. ah Anyway, Sean, you got final thoughts or?
