Reunion and Summer Experiences

00:00:39
Speaker
Welcome everybody. This is Games Over Plastic, episode number 70, not 69 anymore, unfortunately. But what is fortunate is we are once again reunited with the one and only, I'm midnight by the way, but the one and only Hodge. Welcome back, sir. How you doing?
00:00:57
Speaker
Doing good. Been busy as all hell over these last few weeks with it being summer and me working on HVAC. That's just a one-two punch of being constantly busy. So ah happy to be back to record this podcast, though. But yeah, I just want summer to be over at this point. Whoa, do not wish that away, please. Oh, sorry. I don't have a job where I don't do anything over the summer. room Oh, sorry. i don't have a job. We're not going to get a paycheck for two months. oh Oh, I know. Teachers can take the paycheck over the month, over the summer months. No, you're not allowed to. Not in my district. Yeah, well, that sucks.
00:01:37
Speaker
So you got no money. Well, you're rich, though, from all your gambling. So you're good yeah we'll see good. Yeah, we can say that. Or you could get a second job, you know, like I'm good. um I don't want to hear complaints. i not i Listen, I don't don't complain about the summer. You choose to be an HVAC man in the summer. Yeah. And I'm just saying I want summer to be over and I don't.
00:01:57
Speaker
There we go. That's fine. um i I agree with Hodge. I want summer to be over too because summer is the worst time of the year for claims too because that's when all the storms happen and we get bombarded.
00:02:09
Speaker
But

Assassin's Creed Odyssey Discussion

00:02:10
Speaker
I hope the summer ends instantly for Hodge and I and lasts a long time for you, Sean, somehow. about that? But ah Sean, last but not least, how are you, sir?
00:02:21
Speaker
I'm doing great. Just ah enjoying my summer. Went to the beach a few times this past week. Good time. Yeah, you got lots of time to game now.
00:02:32
Speaker
I've been ah playing this crazy game called Odyssey. Yeah, i got to know. Yeah, that doesn't involve Mario or Cappy, though. I got to know. How is it? Assassin's Creed Odyssey.
00:02:45
Speaker
It's good. um Not a lot. Yeah, it's pretty good. ah Started off pretty slow, I think. I think it starts off a little slow, but then it picks up and then get going. I have gotten used to the controls. At first, the controls were a little weird to me, maybe because I hadn't played an Assassin's Creed game ever. But I've adapted to it. It is fun. game is gorgeous. I can't believe this is a 2018 game. It is stunning to just play and look at. Yeah.
00:03:12
Speaker
Well, they did have patches to bring it to current consoles, so that's probably why looks better. But yeah, it was a gorgeous game. Yeah, it it's fun. I could see why people love these Assassin's Creed games. like i could I can see how some people would fall into like, oh, I'm to do all this, do do all these different quests and ah you know liberate all these you know bases and do these checklist things. I could see that. I could not see myself playing one every year, though.
00:03:38
Speaker
No, no. But it's fun. I am playing as Cassandra. I took your advice. um She's awesome, isn't she? The voice acting is great. Yeah, no, the voice acting, I think the performances in this game are really good. think they do a really good job with the cut scenes. But yeah, so far I'm enjoying it. um I've played about 14 hours of it so far. oh And it's a good time. Yeah.
00:04:00
Speaker
Sorry. I'm so so excited. do you have any like cool weapons like flaming swords, poison spears? and I've been i't be driving using a lot of the spears. like I really like the spears. The spear combat is awesome. I tried the swords. I wasn't really feeling i went right back to the spears.
00:04:16
Speaker
Yeah. There's a spear of Poseidon or whatever that's like poisoned. or it's It's awesome. If you don't have it, you'll probably find it later if you're exploring. Yeah. I've been exploring. i Like last night, i didn't do, I played for like three hours and I didn't do like any of the meat. I just started exploring. I got a lot. I'm like, oh I'm going to go do this. And then, I started like just started wandering off, you know killing people, sneaking up, finding people. yeah It was one of those yeah i just kind of got lost. It's fun. I'm enjoying it. So for all the Assassin's Creed hate that I've spewed for the last you know you know two years, i apologize.
00:04:49
Speaker
Yeah,

Podcast Promotion and Upcoming Games

00:04:50
Speaker
I love Odyssey, man. There's just something about that Greek island sand. I always talk about the white sand beach, the turquoise water, the statues of Zeus. It's freaking awesome, you know?
00:05:00
Speaker
It's a vibe. All right. Anyway, I'm glad you're enjoying it, Sean. One of us. Can't wait to hear what you think when you're done. One of us. But this is Games Over Plastic, the podcast for the agnostic gamers. We come to you every Monday, kind of, on all audio platforms, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Pocket Casts, everywhere.

Let us know what you thought of the video or the podcast. Let us know what you think of what we're talking about. And if you have write-ins, I always say this, but I don't think we're getting any. Come on, guys. If you have write-ins for the show, leave them in the comments, message Sean, whatever.
00:06:01
Speaker
And we will you know we'll use your write-in probably on a future episode. All right? You can have your question read and responded to. How fun would that be? On this show, on this episode, we are going to, first of all, recap Hodge's backlog because he wasn't here. And then the main topic of discussion, guys, is we're going to be talking about our favorite cover art, video game covers.
00:06:26
Speaker
almost said album art. The same thing. kind of the the The art of the game and the best ones, our favorite, our top ten favorites. That's what we're going to be doing today. And it's going to be a lot of fun because there's some great artwork out there.
00:06:38
Speaker
Very timely considering ah the death of physical media. Yeah, exactly. um But first, before we do that, since Hodge was unfortunately not with us last week, last week we went over the next five games that we plan to get to from our backlog. Hodge, ah why don't you let us know about yours?
00:06:58
Speaker
Yeah, so really quickly, ah five games I want to play. One of them was one i already said i was going to play, and that is Plague Tale, of Innocence, and...
00:07:09
Speaker
I'm and playing Requiem because I haven't played the second one and I want to replay the first one because Resonance is obviously coming out this year. So I want to replay the first one and play the second one. So I've been I've been I finally beat Hades, too, but I haven't gotten the platinum. So I'm still playing through it here and there. But I know that once I'm done with Hades, these are my next games. These are definitely going to be the next games I play. And so I'm very excited to play because, again, I love Plague Tale Innocence. I thought it was a great game. And I'm excited to play Requiem because I know that was a next gen or, you know, gen after game. And so that one played even better and smoother and stuff. So I'm very excited to play these before Resonance comes out later this year.
00:07:51
Speaker
All right. Yeah. I love those games. We talked about them before. Great games. um ah Crazy to me that you would replay Innocence. I know people do that, like you and Colin and stuff. I just don't know how people have time to replay a whole game before they play two other new games. I'm just like, man, just watch a recap on YouTube and then jump in the next game. But hey, do what you want. I'm not going to tell you how to live your life. Innocence is a great game. but where Before Hodge continues on.
00:08:16
Speaker
You know what I think is so funny? We did a whole episode last week, Midnight Night, on five games from our backlog, and then I started a game I didn't even mention. Which one? An Odyssey. I didn't even mention it, and then of sudden, Wednesday night, I just started playing it.
00:08:29
Speaker
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, we kind of, we peer pressured you into playing it. There you go. Yeah, I to be fair, though, with innocence, I mean, I am the kind of person who will replay a series before the new game comes up because I'm a crazy person. But I beat Innocence on Xbox and I have it on PlayStation, so I'm going to platinum it on PlayStation. That makes more sense. Okay. So that's how I'm going to replay it. But my next game, this it's not technically, I mean, it is a backlog, but it's not. Is that because I've just been itching to replay these games forever and that's Bioshock. Obviously, I've played this game. I've played it 10 times already in my life, but I just love this game so much that it's in my backlog of basically it's in line for a game I need to play because I just love it so much. So that's why I'm including it on my list.
00:09:21
Speaker
Because was looking through all my games libraries. There's a couple of games that I want to get to, but I can't promise I'll get to them. Whereas unlike Bioshock, I really want to replay this game soon, especially knowing that Judas is supposedly... Maybe, hopefully, next year.
00:09:33
Speaker
Probably not, but who knows. i just I've been itching to replay Bioshock for years. Judas is too busy betraying Jesus. come on That's true.

Video Game Cover Art and Nostalgia

00:09:40
Speaker
he's he's He's a bad man. But yeah, so I want to play Bioshock and probably 2 Infinite as well. But the first one, Foy. Foy Shoy.
00:09:52
Speaker
Okay. I'm sorry, what game was it that you were going to play? Bioshock. Bioshock 1? Yeah, maybe the trilogy, maybe just the first. i don't know. We'll see. I want to I'm going to play all three before Judas comes out. But obviously we don't know when Judas is coming out. So, OK. And then next up is Keeper. That's the double fine game where he plays a lighthouse. Yeah. like yeah Yeah. And i I heard it's not like amazing, but intrigued me enough that I want to play it. And I know it's a short game, so I wouldn't you know lose much of anything by playing through this game.
00:10:25
Speaker
Our buddy Dan, I'm pretty sure he said he liked it. i don't think he was like in love with it, but he did enjoy it. He 100% got the 1000 Gs on Xbox. so i know um I know David Jaffe really liked it.
00:10:40
Speaker
did he? Yeah, he did. He mentioned it on ah Sacred Streaming last Monday. Speaking of David Jaffe, if if they need, I can play Kratos in the live action show now that Ryan Hurst dropped out. Yeah. If they need me, they can call me. See, I got the Kratos beard down, kind of. It's the wrong color, but... No, we're going to get Pedro Pascal, and then when we get the PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale movie, it will just be Pedro Pascal and... Bella Ramsey? And Tom Holland. the perfect character and but we Every character will be Pedro Pascal and Tom Holland. Awesome. that's that That sounds perfect to me. Yeah.
00:11:13
Speaker
And then next up is just because one of you met, I think it was midnight mentioned this on a couple episodes ago. and And I remembered it was in my library. So I do want to hop into this. And that's Ghostwire Tokyo. I really do want to play this game because it it was one of those that I downloaded kind of when it came out or I bought it or it was on goal game of gold or place it whatever it was. Yeah. Whatever it was that I have it.
00:11:37
Speaker
And when it came out, I wanted to, but i got so busy with other games or whatever that I just never got around to it. And when you mentioned, I was like oh, yeah, i actually really want to play that game. I completely forgot about it. So I added that in my backlog. I want to get to it sooner than later. It might be like an early spoopy season type game, like a September type game, like right before spoopy season. But when I'm starting to get in the mood, because I know there's like some supernatural elements to this game. And I am. I really enjoyed Ghostfire Tokyo when I played it. I played it right when it came out and I thought it was awesome. Like I thought it was like I was shocked that that not many people were talking about it when it came out. It was one of those things that kind of just came and went. I was surprised because it it plays really. it's It's fun. It plays really well. But yeah, there are some supernatural elements.
00:12:21
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. So I'm very excited for this. And then finally, this game, I actually I'm ashamed to say I didn't even know this game existed until I was looking through Game Pass the other day and saw it on there. And that's Call of the Elder Gods. This is a sequel to a game called Call of the Sea. I don't know if you guys remember this game. I've heard of Call of the Sea. Yeah.
00:12:39
Speaker
Yeah, it's it's a walking sim that came out. think it launched with the Xbox Series X. so And it was it was exclusive to Xbox for a while, but then I think it did eventually get over to PlayStation. But it's this really cool story where you're like exploring this island and you're this woman trying to like find out her family history and stuff. And it's this really, really cool story. And so I had no idea they came out with sequel. And it's called, yeah, Call the Elder Gods. It's a sequel to Call of the Sea. And I'm like...
00:13:06
Speaker
I love obviously walking Sims. i'm ah I'm a loser like that, but knowing that there was a sequel to this game, i don't know if ah I was just missing it when people were talking about it or if it just straight up went on under the radar, but I'm very excited to check this out because again, I love the first one. So I'm definitely going check out call the elder God soon. That might be right after plague tale. cause that'll be a nice, really short pal. Cause I'm pretty sure call the sea was like a two or three hour game. It's a very, very short game. So, I'm sure Elder Gods is no longer. So I definitely want to use that as kind of a palette cleanser game here coming up. But yeah, Call the Elder Gods is my fifth backlog game. no yeah All right.
00:13:44
Speaker
Good list. So Plague Tale, Innocence and Requiem, Bioshock, Keeper, Ghostwire Tokyo, and Call of the Elder Gods. Good stuff. I played four of them.
00:13:55
Speaker
i've played since Since there's two Plague Tales there. I've played Bioshock. the You played Ghostwire, I thought. Oh, and Ghostwire. Sorry. Yeah, you were just talking about that. Yeah, yeah idiot.
00:14:06
Speaker
Don't call me an idiot. yeah All right. Good stuff, Hodge. Good games. Good games. There's one game that's missing from your list, my friend, that you have to play. Remember? What? Oh, yeah. the thegraph GTA Vice City. Yeah. Although I did tell you that if you would rather play Sleeping Dogs, I'm okay. with We can switch it.
00:14:25
Speaker
Those are interchangeable. Sleeping dogs is better. We'll see. Cause I know I own sleeping dogs. I'm pretty sure it's better. Yeah. But I don't know. We'll see. I kind of want to, I kind of want to play, um, by city just because i want to see if it intrigues me enough to give six a shot when it comes out. Cause as of right now, I don't, obviously as people know, I don't give a fuck about grand theft auto. So if, uh, if,
00:14:50
Speaker
Vice City can latch me. But I will say, the most recent GTA 6 trailer that came out, i don't remember when, it actually did intrigue me a little bit. like The setting does look so gorgeous that I'm like, this said like it might give me that... um cyberpunk feeling of like this city feels so lived in because that's what I love most about cyberpunk is that setting was so, so cool. And so I'm like, if six can do that to me, maybe I'll give this a shot. But obviously it's it's very far down my list of interest. But maybe one day I'll actually try and play GTA six. But and so if I city grabs me, then maybe that'll be my
00:15:28
Speaker
my uh my desire to get into it so maybe one day maybe one day maybe one day all right boys let's go ahead and segue over to the topic of this episode which is going to be our favorite video game cover art and what we're going to do uh we have a table already so we're going to do hodge midnight sean we'll start at number 10 hey and uh hodge are you ready to go my friend Yeah, I'm just, ah yeah, I'm ready to go. So my number 10, I don't, mine's like my 10 and then a bunch, it's kind of shuffled and then like two and one or like my actual two and one. So I didn't like completely order it, but my number 10, this is kind of the one I think about least, but I do really like this cover art. And that is ah the last case of Benedict Fox. Ooh, okay. It's just this, like, it's one of those games that, even though sadly this game was glitchy and I ended up falling off of it because it just randomly reset my progress. And, like, it just, it was a game-breaking bug that I couldn't get past it. I mean, I know a definitive edition's out now, so maybe one day I will go back and replay this game because this is one of those games where just the vibes of the game got me into playing it.
00:16:46
Speaker
And the cover art is no exception. You're just a dude standing there with a knife and like these like call Cthulhu, like tentacle things are like, like darkness is like swarming you. And it's just such a cool art that it's part of what got me into the game itself.
00:17:02
Speaker
But yeah, unfortunately not, not a, or unfortunately a broken game, but maybe one day, hopefully I can get back into this one. But yeah, that cover art is just, is gorgeous. So. That's all my number 10.
00:17:14
Speaker
That is nice. i like i love I love purple, my favorite color. and The color of purple. The color purple. And yeah, now this does look pretty sweet, dude. Standing there with his knife. They got all these weird tentacles and looks like a storm, even though it's not a storm. It just looks cool. Yeah. I like it. I like it. oh Yeah, no, it's gorgeous.
00:17:34
Speaker
Just like you, Sean. like Gorgeous. Simply gorgeous. Gorgeous. Alright, my number 10 is not nearly as fancy, but I love it. And it's actually Skyrim. The Elder Scrolls Skyrim. I'm talking about the original box, the black one, um where it just it looks like a book. It's got like embroidery around the edges. It's very simple. It just says the Elder Scrolls V Skyrim, and then it just has that clean diamond dragon logo in the middle. And there's just something. First of all, the game is iconic as hell for me.
00:18:05
Speaker
um But there's just something clean and beautiful and simple about this box art that for me, i love it. Like I said, it's got that old book look to it. Like you can see like a little wear and tear on the book and the embroidery on the edges.
00:18:17
Speaker
It's awesome. Yeah, boring cover for a boring game. All right. Sean. I know. i that is a I do love that art, the Skyrim art. It's very iconic, that silver dragon like symbol thing. Yeah, it's it's a very, very cool. Game of Thrones before Game of Thrones.
00:18:38
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. yeah Yeah. Even though, even though I love the image of him, like standing up on the rock with like the dragon tail or whatever surrounding him, I like that image better, but as a cover art, yeah, that black like booklet looking one is, is very pretty. No, I do like, I do like the, ah the cover of the original. I like that. Like, like I like the dragon in the middle. It's nice. It's just very simple and unassuming, but it's I think it, I think it's better than the ah updated cover.
00:19:05
Speaker
Yeah, like with him on the mountain, yeah which is cool, too. But there's just something about that simplicity that I like. So that's my number 10. Cat likes it, too. What about you, Sean? All right. My number 10. got to get my Nickelodeon slump out of the way. So we're go we're going Nicktoons MLB. All right. Now, Nicktoons MLB. So this cover. Features Jimmy Neutron, Aang, Spongebob, um i think yeah Ren from Ren and Stimpy, Invader Zim. But then we got some MLB players on there, too. We got Robinson Cano, young Robinson Cano when he was on the Yankees. We got Miguel Cabrera, Matt Holiday, Jason Hayward, Cliff Lee. face just you know Classic and MLB, Nicktoons MLB. The Nicktoons are on the top, MLB players on the bottom. It's great. Game's fun. You play baseball, one of my favorite sports. You Nicktoons in there, and got the real-life MLB players. So, yeah, Nicktoons MLB. Yeah. There you go. I like that. Sure.
00:20:01
Speaker
Why not? You see the cover? The cover's nice. It's actually really nice. It's not a bad cover. I do like how like the bottom is green and the top is kind of teal and it blends together. and you got Yeah, it's not bad. What do you think? You're the you're the graphics guru, Hodge. What's this artwork doing for you?
00:20:18
Speaker
It looks like... if someone online made a fake cover of like a crossover, that's never going to happen. And that's just what it looks like to me. If if it was like super smash brothers meets Capcom versus Marvel. And like someone made a fake cover, that's what it looks like to me. But I mean, the game's fun, whatever, but that is... that I cannot believe that's... Like, SpongeBob's standing there. Who's that? Derek Jeter or something? No, Robinson Cano. Robinson Cano. Yeah, it's just... so It's a fever dream. Dude, the game's fun, but it is very odd because, like, it's, like, real players playing, and then you have the Nicktoons characters walk up, and they're like, like as Nicktoons, it's weird. And, guess what?
00:21:05
Speaker
connect you can play with connect i see that yes yeah it's better with connect um the play with connect yep gosh i'm sure it was much better with connect as oh yeah i'm sure i'm sure it was i'm sure it was yeah but yeah nicktoons mlb so there we go there we go good stuff all right hodge number nine or whatever all right numero nine um I'm going go with Dishonored's Definitive Edition. Dishonored cover is great, but Dishonored Definitive Edition, it's the instead of like the normal one is him on the cover, we like having his arms up like this and shows his Corvo's really cool mask and everything. But the Definitive Edition, it just looks so like dystopian in a way where it's like a hand holding the mask rather than him wearing it. And that art just looks so cool to me. It looks so dark and
00:21:53
Speaker
brooding and so yeah I just and I love the Dishonored games I still need to go back and play too because I've said it before on here I never finished it because it had a game it had a game breaking bug in it when I played it and when at launch and I just never went back to it so eventually I will go back to Dishonored I love both of what I played of both games but yeah this cover art is absolutely gorgeous I love Dishonored and it's covered so yeah alright very good cover's awesome I love that it is It is a cool cover.
00:22:24
Speaker
um I'm seeing different artwork when I'm looking at Dishonored Definitive Edition for some reason. One of them, he's like standing up holding like a knife and like talking on a radio. And the other one, he's just holding a mask.
00:22:36
Speaker
Which one is the real one? The one, it's basically hand holding the mask. yeah so holding Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Well, I don't know what that other one was, but yeah, the hand holding the mask is clean and I like that.
00:22:48
Speaker
That's good. Okay. Good pick. Scary. You know what else is a good pick? My number nine. And this is a game that Hodge mentioned recently that he's going to play.
00:23:00
Speaker
And it is Bioshock, the original Bioshock. You got the big daddy, the little sister, Rapture in the background. Clean, iconic, great game.
00:23:13
Speaker
Bioshock 1, that's my pick. Yeah, that cover is so iconic. I remember... seeing it for the first time in a Game Informer magazine and being like, what the heck is this? Because it was probably, the game came out 07. The magazine was probably like 2006. I was probably like 10 years old, maybe even nine when I saw this. and I like had no idea what this was. and like I was like, what the heck? And then to finally like actually play it you know you know four years ago um and experience it, yeah, that cover suits the game so well.
00:23:47
Speaker
So good. I love it. Yeah, dude. It's funny. Bioshock is one of two games that I remember premiered in like game informer that I thought looked so stupid and it was so wrong. i don't know why. Just seeing like, i was like, it's like, so it's like underwater scuba people. What is this? Saving little girls. Yeah. I wasn't like reading the article. so I was just seeing the pictures of like a scuba suit people. i'm like, this looks so stupid. And then obviously the game came out and I, it blew me away. But the other one was kingdom hearts. When I first saw the art for that, I'm like,
00:24:16
Speaker
Like Final Fantasy Disney? What is this crap? And then obviously i love Kingdom Hearts. Dude, fell in love with Kingdom The second I saw Kingdom Hearts, it. i ah yeah I'll be talking about that game later. Maybe I will too. Yeah. Sean.
00:24:32
Speaker
What's your number nine? All right, number nine. You know what? I'm just going to say it right now because we brought a Kingdom Hearts. Kingdom Hearts 2. That's mine. Kingdom Hearts 2. That box art. I only did one game per franchise here because I i would name a lot of the Kingdom Hearts games. Not three. The three box hearts not good. Um, but Kingdom Hearts 2, that box art, uh, I mean, one's really good as well, but Kingdom Hearts 2 box art, they're sitting there, they're, you get to grown up a little bit. I remember seeing it for the first time and not knowing who Roxas was and being like, who is this blonde haired kid?
00:25:03
Speaker
I remember like online. there So they used to refer to him on the back in the online forums. They yeah BH, they'd call him blonde haired or BHK blonde haired kid. And I remember just like them sitting there. It's so good. You see in the background, you get to see Diz who I'm not going spoil who Diz is, but you see him and then you see an organization member also see Mickey with his organization 13 cloak on. Yeah, I just love that Kingdom Hearts box art. it's So iconic. And then even the original like Kingdom Hearts 1 box art is so good as well. But yeah, 2, I just love that 2 box art. And then the original 2 final mix Japanese box art. Oh, did you ever see the 2 final mix Japanese box art?
00:25:41
Speaker
That one where they're all standing on like yes on the pillars? Yeah, that's pretty awesome too. But yeah, Kingdom of Hearts, such good box art up until 3. But yeah, Kingdom Hearts 2. Yeah. yeah Okay.
00:25:53
Speaker
ah I'll just say it it was number one on my list, but I'll just say now, and that's Kingdom Hearts 1. I obviously... Whoa, whoa, why are you jumping ahead? ill Let them do it. Let them do it. It's fine. We're talking about Kingdom Hearts. yes but um It's so... What I love about it is, well, first of all, I have this.
00:26:10
Speaker
If people haven't seen this, have this wood cut out of the Kingdom Hearts one cover because I love it so much. But um I love that you speaking of two is I love the first one because it's like the darkness with everything being black, like the cover is very dark. And then the second one, it's like the ah nobodies where it's very silver and white.
00:26:33
Speaker
Yep. So I love that it has that difference between the two covers. But the first one is just so freaking iconic, especially because I'm sure you remember this. The original one, I think I don't know if the greatest hits one was, but the original cover was like glossy and holographic. Yes. Like that yeah black. It was so beautiful. Like I, it felt like a prestigious game when I had that game. And yeah, that cover art is just absolutely beautiful. So it it is my favorite, but in the, in the spirit of us talking about Kingdom Hearts, I'll just say it now. Cause honestly, well, who cares? The list doesn't really matter. We're,
00:27:09
Speaker
that much yeah so kingdom of hearts is another one that yeah i absolutely love love love love that come yeah that original i i remember talking about the exact the original bought it was kind of like holographic you even get the um you have the gargoyle heartless kind of in there too in like the on the original car cover art you get there's like a silhouette of the gargoyle heartless which is so it's such a random heartless to include in that like i don't know why but it's oh so good yeah and Yeah. Love it.
00:27:41
Speaker
Well, you know what, guys? I'm going to go ahead and take what was my number seven, and I'm going to move it up to number eight just for you guys. And it's actually Kingdom Hearts. That's right.
00:27:51
Speaker
I had Kingdom Hearts on my list. I knew it. I knew it. and At number seven, I had Kingdom Hearts. The heart heart-shaped moon, the characters in front of it with the key blade out, et cetera. Very iconic. Yes, I did.
00:28:05
Speaker
Straight up. Look, I'll screenshot. I mean, it is is the yeah an absolutely gorgeous artwork. so I mean, because this isn't based off games that we like. This is just based off artwork. so Look in Discord. I screenshot. You can see what my next game is, too. ah But yeah, Kingdom Hearts was on my list at number seven. I put it on there for you guys.
00:28:25
Speaker
I appreciate it. Yeah. well I appreciate that. But it is a pretty cool, iconic artwork. Yeah. So good. I mean, all like I said, all the Kingdom Hearts, even the Chain of um chain of Memories box art is freaking awesome, too. Like, I love Source sitting there with the cards. It's so cool.
00:28:38
Speaker
I absolutely love the Chain of Memories artwork. It is gorgeous. I just hate that game. Oh, I freaking love the game. I love it. I love it so much. I read the manga instead of playing the game because I wanted the story, but I cannot do that card gameplay at all. And the story is so deep. And I guess story is super deep for Chain of Memories. But yeah, that box art for the GBA. Oh my God. It's so good. That Chain of Memories box art.
00:29:02
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. All right. Well, there you go. Kingdom Hearts. All three of us added. That might be the only game that all three of us have. We'll see. Sean.
00:29:14
Speaker
What's your next game? right. Number eight for me is the first one of the first GameCube game. Well, it was a launch GameCube game. cube game um This is when Luigi got very weird and strange. And this is Luigi's Mansion, like the original Luigi's Mansion box art. He's sitting there. He's terrified and have the ghosts all surrounding him. um I really love that box art. And I remember like i wanted this game so bad when I got my GameCube and the lady at Toys R Us said they didn't have it, even though they did. But I love that box art. This is what gave Luigi, like, his distinct personality, like, his current personality that he has now. And I just think it's so cool. It's so, like, it has him scared with a ghost around him. And it kind of gives you an idea of, like, we're not just dealing with booze here. or We have some unique ghosts here. But yeah, Luigi's Mansion 1. I just love that art.
00:30:04
Speaker
It is good art. is good art. Is Slimer in it? Shut up.
00:30:10
Speaker
That would have been cool. They should have crossover with Slimer. um It basically is Luigi Ghostbusters. But um another thing that I really like about this, it kind of captures like the the style of the game. Because like in the game, Luigi has these in animated like so like looks and craziness. And like that cover kind of just screams that. So yeah, Luigi's Mansion.
00:30:33
Speaker
all right Good stuff. All right. Hodge, what's your next game? All right. This one, it's very it's very a simple cover, but I absolutely love it, and that is Hogwarts Legacy. The guy just standing on the mountain overlooking Hogwarts is such a beautiful... And then, I'm not going to say one over the other, but the the why i'm ah the... The deluxe edition, where it's like a green shade, and instead of the blue spell, he has a green spell on his wand, and there's you can see the...
00:31:05
Speaker
Oh my God, why am I blanking on what the the dead horses are called? Ugh. Anyway, you see those flying through the air. The Thestrals. The Thestrals, yes. The Thestrals, thank you. You see them flying through the air above the castle and stuff. It's just such a clean and gorgeous artwork. And it's one of those that makes it seem so magical because, again, that game is... I had a very warm and fuzzy feeling. Yes, pun intended. I had a very warm and fuzzy feeling in my gut playing that game because it was such a just...
00:31:34
Speaker
Such a happy game in a way. Obviously, there's dark parts of the game. not a cadaver! Which, again, is making me, side tangent, making me so excited for Fable because I got that same feeling watching those trailers. I'm getting that fuzzy, magical feeling, and I really want to play it. But Hogwarts Legacy, that cover, it's just so good. I love it.
00:31:54
Speaker
It is. It is so good. And Corey, our boy Corey, will love that pick. He loves that game. I don't think he listens to our podcast, but he can prove he can prove me wrong if he's if he does listen. Let me know that you were shouted out. but But ah yeah, no, that's a great game. We all played and beat that game, right?
00:32:12
Speaker
john is Yeah. Yeah, we all liked it. We need a sequel. Yeah, and I watched all the movies recently, and I'm now real an actual Harry Potter fan. Go read the books. No, no, no.
00:32:25
Speaker
Listen the books. It's even better. I might do the audiobooks one day. They're so good. So good. So good. If you need a recommendation of ah awesome audiobooks, I got one that's ah amazing that you'll love. I'll tell you later. It's called The Bible.
00:32:41
Speaker
Yes, The Bible, of course. all right I'm up next. All right, so this is my my next one, which you saw on the the sheet. It's actually Grand Theft Auto Vice City. That's right. That's my next game. I think this is just a very cool, iconic cover art. It's got those 80s Miami vibe. You know, you see the characters, you see the car and the boat and all the little scenes. And it's just it's it's a beautiful, simple, rock star style cover art.
00:33:08
Speaker
GTA Vice City. good What do you guys think about that? Yeah, it's a good pick. I think GTA games, the cover art is very like subtle. But if you look at it and really look at it it includes a lot and includes a lot of like the concept art for the game in it, and which I really like.
00:33:26
Speaker
Yeah, definitely. I love it. You got a helicopter, a motorcycle, a car, some 80s dudes with guns and stuff, some chicken, a bikini, 80s vibes, immaculate game. Although at this point, it's probably quite old and aged, but ah still great, I'm sure.
00:33:42
Speaker
There you go. Vice City. Nice. Who's next? All right. I am up. And this one, I think Hodge like. Well, Hodge hasn't played this game, but he's going to like the pick just because artwork. And that is Chrono Trigger. So Akira Toriyama did the artwork for Chrono Trigger, which is awesome. um And this just like screams Dragon Ball Z to me. And it's this is what originally got me interested in Chrono Trigger was just like the artwork for it. And the game is just awesome.
00:34:11
Speaker
I think it's a tad overrated. I really, really like it, but everyone thinks it's like God's gift to earth. I don't think it's God's gift to earth. It's a good game. Not the greatest thing since sliced bread, but the art styles is amazing. Again, it's a Kiri Toriyama and it screams it right there. um It has like, you know, the Goku lookalike character. I'm not going to name who it is because that's kind of a spoiler. um You know, going up against a giant monster. We got magic going on. Yeah, it's awesome.
00:34:38
Speaker
Dude, I love it for two reasons, because one, obviously, i love Akira Toriyama. I love Dragon Ball and all that. But what I love more about it is it's the color scheme of. So if anyone is like me and have read the manga for Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, some chapters, the first few chapters,
00:34:57
Speaker
or the first few pages would be colored ye and it was this art style. Yep. Like this exact art style is what those were colored. Like it wasn't full color. He would just use some little colors here and there and it is such a cool look and I absolutely love it. And so yeah, that artwork is in insane. The whole game is like this, like that.
00:35:17
Speaker
That's like the coolest part. yeah That's what I loved about like Corona trigger and the dragon quest. It's like the Akira Toriyama art. Oh, I love it. It's iconic. Yeah. and blue dragon which i was gonna be playing soon you'll still play it soon once you finish the gri the goat odyssey oh yeah all right good stuff good stuff hodge Number six. This is the only game on my list that I haven't played, or I have played and I wasn't a fan of, but this artwork is so good, and that is Dying Light.
00:35:52
Speaker
The cover of the first Dying Light game is so gorgeous. It's so creepy. It's so just... The artist in me absolutely loves it. So for those who don't know, it's a side profile of a zombie and in the in the shade of its head, there's hands like reaching up like zombie hands reaching up and then behind there's a couple of zombies walking and the the typography of the dying and light being split between the zombie and the background. It's just an amazing artwork.
00:36:20
Speaker
I absolutely love it. I did not like this game. I liked it for a little bit. The parkour stuff was okay, but it's one of those things that zombie games, for some reason, they can never just be left alone as zombie games. It always has to be this thing of like, well, now it's dark. So there's tank ones and ones that spit acid at you. And I'm like,
00:36:41
Speaker
Can it just be normal swarms of zombies? Do I need super powered zombies in every zombie game? Aren't zombies scary enough? Yeah, it makes sense in, like, The Last of Us because it's just the level of how long they've been infected of, the of like, you know... um The evolution. yeah Yeah, the fungus just grows on them. Like, it grows into their heads so they become clickers because they can't see anymore. And then that once one's been long enough, they turn into the big tank because there's so much grown on them that they're just indestructible, basically. Like, it makes sense in that. But other games where it's like... Like, that's one thing I always hated about... Even though I like the game, but Left 4 Dead, it was, like... Oh, here comes the one, the giant muscular one. I'm like,
00:37:22
Speaker
what? Like, why is there a giant, like tank zombie? Like, it doesn't make sense. I got keep you interested, man. Yeah. And so that's just the thing I don't like about zombie games. So I kind of fell off at that point, even though I did like the concept of like at night, they became more powerful just to add like a little bit of something. But yeah, I don't need super powered zombies. I just, a swarm of zombies is scary enough. We don't, we don't need superpowers, but that again, but going back to it, that artwork is, I, I think dying like twos is,
00:37:51
Speaker
kind of mediocre, but the first Dying Light's cover art is amazing. Yeah. So, yeah. And two, they did the same thing with his head and stuff, but the art's not nearly as cool. Yeah. Yeah. Because it's a guy with a hatchet instead of like a zombie. So it's just yeah like it's it's good looking, but it's not nearly as like as memorable as having it being a zombie and like this. very, it kind of reminds me of the, um both of you might remember this, but do you remember the book, scary stories to tell in the dark? Yeah.
00:38:20
Speaker
Yeah. The kids horror books, the artwork in those books were so creepy yeah and it kind of looks like that. And even though I guess they nerfed the books and now they have new artwork in them that they sell and it looks so stupid compared to it. Cause those were scary artworks when we were kids. And so yeah, dying late.
00:38:38
Speaker
Good stuff. Good stuff. All right. So here's a great one. My turn. yeah ah I'm distracted because I just saw another artwork that is like AI and completely fake. But I'm like, oh, this was GJ's version of the artwork.
00:38:56
Speaker
It's a Gooner one. all right. Anyway, guess what? assassin's creed odyssey sean this artwork is awesome dude you got you got freaking uh what's his name alexios the not the fake protagonist because cassandra's better uh but you got alexios on the cover in his spartan armor he's standing there there looking badass with dual spears in the field as he's fighting some athens athenian warriors in the background you got ah a f freaking eagle flying a statue of beside and you got the what is that the Parthenon or whatever up on the hill. ah it' There's temples. There's a bit of water with some ships. It's freaking awesome, dude. It shows kind of a glimpse of everything in the game all in one, and he looks badass, and it's colorful, and it's beautiful, and I love it.
00:39:42
Speaker
Yeah, this isn't on my list at all, but I love most of the Assassin's Creed art is good. Like the three of the guy jumping up on the red suit, stabbing him, and the four where you're on the pirate ship. ah Even Origins, where it's like it's kind of the Odyssey cover, but it's all Egyptian stuff. like The artworks of these games have always been awesome. Even the first one, where it's just kind of Altair, kind of blending into the crowd. like It's a very, very cool art, like...
00:40:10
Speaker
Just throughout the entire series, the artwork is awesome. But yeah, Odyssey, that Greek artwork is awesome. Very cool artwork. yeah Very cool. Good artwork, yeah.
00:40:22
Speaker
Very cool. Should have been Cassandra on the cover. cause She is. No, then it wouldn't have sold. They probably did that this the... minimum yeah is That was her girl. Wasn't that was not Odyssey? Was that Odyssey where that that the study came out? and like Oh, no one wants to play as the girl. Yeah. The girl was supposed to be the main character, but they're like no one's going to want to play as her, so we have to add a male character. And it's like... Yeah, everyone hates Tomb Raider and Horizon. Yeah. don't No one wants to play as a woman.
00:40:49
Speaker
Exactly. and But sick cover art, though, for sure. I mean, to be fair, the male armor looks cooler in the Greek stuff. like i I mean, she looks cool, too. They kind of you know made a feminized version of it, but the male armor is way cooler. So I'll give them that for at least the cover. But for the story. Yeah.
00:41:07
Speaker
He plays a woman who cares. so Sandra is the better character. Yeah. Anyways. Sean. All right, we're going to stick with Akira Turiyama here, and I'm going Dragon Ball Z Budokai 2. So Budokai 2's artwork, I really like Budokai 2's artwork. You have Kid Buu in the background, his giant Kid Buu face, kind of like terrifying. You have Goku doing the Spirit Bomb. You got Vegito, my all-time favorite fusion, and then you got Gotenks as well there. And Hodge, did you have i mean did you have the original Budokai 2, not the Greatest Hits version?
00:41:40
Speaker
Yeah. Do you know remember how like all three them? Remember how it was like, my one it was like holographic. Like it was very silver. Yeah. Like I freaking love that. Um, yeah, but yeah, Budokai too. I really liked this artwork and it a kind of harps on, listen, I know Budokai one, we stopped at the cell saga for some reason. Um, yeah, Budokai two, we got the boo saga, which is so weird. They didn't include the,
00:42:02
Speaker
the boo saga and boot that one very strange but it was really hard for not like a time constraint or something i think it was but then you know what's crazy in the european box art they have um boo majin boo is in the uh is in the back of the budokai one european box art which is oh really yeah it's so funny like that's such a tease to them but yeah budokai box art i freaking love yeah You want to know what artwork I also like from Dragon Ball Z, even though the game was not good? Dragon Ball Z Sagas.
00:42:32
Speaker
Oh, yeah, that is pretty cool artwork, but yeah, the game sucked. Yeah, that game is terrible. I loved it as a kid. Oh, I bought it day one. I went back to it later, and i was like, oh, this is bad. It's bad. I remember getting Sagas day one and playing it for like an hour and being like,
00:42:52
Speaker
Well, it's my game for the next few months. Yeah. Oh, bad. Budokai 2. So good. Good stuff, guys. Good stuff.
00:43:05
Speaker
all right, Hodge, what do you got? All right. Hey, my next one is, let me pull my list. Ooh, this one I actually thought about kind of last minute and, but I had to include it. And that's splinter cell chaos theory, the artwork of basically in the rain, Sam Fisher's hanging down upside down behind a guard with a knife. It is just so cool. well I love it. And I love all the splinter cell games, even the ones that people aren't huge fans of. Uh, I think they're all great games, but this is by far the best art.
00:43:40
Speaker
vi Yeah. In the rain, hanging down over a guard with a knife out like. So yeah, that is cool. That is cool looking for sure. I never I've never played a ah splinter cell. I know there are. Yeah. Oh, they're like stealth games.
00:43:56
Speaker
Yeah, I love stealth, though, so that's why I like it. But I mean, the later ones got way more action heavy, but yeah. Yeah, I absolutely. I've read some I've read some Tom Clancy books.
00:44:08
Speaker
Nice. Does that count? right Yeah, it counts. It's even better. yeah Speaking of Tom Clancy, the division had good cover. art It's not on my list, but that was a pretty good looking. That's a great game. I own the division.
00:44:20
Speaker
The Division, I loved, I really enjoyed the game, but it was one of those where it being always online, playing it solo just wasn't that fun. yeah you know it would have been Yeah, it would have been so much fun to play like as a squad, even though that was also the typical, that era of Ubisoft where they would overpromise in their trailers and then the games came out looking nothing like that. and Because the Division and Watch Dogs are the two main elements. it's the first Venus 4 game ever! Yeah! Dude, PS4 games are going to look like that? and Dude, I was so hyped for Watch Dogs. And then when and when they showed that mission in what the game actually looks like, you're like... hu my My neighbor thought Watch Dogs was going to be like the greatest thing ever. And then he got it and was like...
00:45:09
Speaker
do you remember kind of Do you remember that that game came out? i don't remember how, if it was a month or a week or whatever, before GTA 5. And it was just like, oh, or maybe it was after GTA 5. It was basically like, once you're done in Liberty City whatever, come over to Chicago. And everyone's like, are you really trying to stunt on Grand Theft Auto right now?
00:45:30
Speaker
Oh, my God. You don't mess with GTA. Yeah. Yeah. um Alright, yeah, good one, good one, good one. Okay, I'm up next, and I got a good one here.
00:45:43
Speaker
This is actually, i this should be ranked higher, to be honest with you. But, whatever, it's not. Guess what? Red Dead Redemption 2. This art is amazing, dude. You got Arthur Morgan with the gun. You got the you know the sunset in the background with the whole gang rioting. It's just amazing. This this is super iconic.
00:46:06
Speaker
This is an amazing game. One of the best games ever. Everyone should play this game for sure. Although I actually like the first game more. Red Dead Redemption 1 is better, but they're both amazing. But yeah, Red Dead Redemption 2 cover art is going to be my pick. What do you guys think about that, huh?
00:46:24
Speaker
It's good cover art, yeah. Yeah, I'm going to use this to cheat really quickly and remove it one from my list because I had another one wanted add. And I'm going to say all three Red Dead Redemption covers because two and one and Undead Nightmare. Oh, they're going to Revolver. right dead No, Undead Nightmare. I did have my own list and I'm going to cheat and remove it because of you mentioned it here. The Undead Nightmare artwork, it's the same artwork as the front or as the first game, but he's a zombie and it looks so cool. I absolutely absolutely love that artwork, but all three of them are so good. I love this painterly like
00:46:55
Speaker
like ink colored cover. It's they're all gorgeous. I absolutely love these games. so I like the little stars too, like the American flag stars at the bottom under the ground. Like, yeah yeah, it's just awesome, man. Yeah. Great. Great artwork. Yeah.
00:47:09
Speaker
So good. If they ever get a next gen port, I will try Red Dead 2 again. But until then, I'm not playing at 30 FPS. I did. I did. And it was still great. But yeah, I feel you. I feel Yeah.
00:47:21
Speaker
i don't know because At this point, they've ported GTA 5 17,000 times. They can do Red Dead once. GTA 5 and Skyrim have been ported millions of times. Yeah. yeah I remember played it. They can do one for RDR 2.
00:47:33
Speaker
I played it on Series X because I was like, oh you know this game's going to look great in 4K, 4K 30, and it did. It's a beautiful game. yeah The 30 didn't bother me too much because it is a slow-paced game, but I but i feel you.
00:47:44
Speaker
If you'd rather wait, wait on, sir. Yeah. Sean. Alright, my next game for the box art you guys are going to like, it is Halo 2. That original Halo 2 box art with Master Chief kind of crot kind of like crouching with the two SMGs holding up the two SMGs. Oh my god, it's so so good, so iconic. um You know, kind showing off, look, we can dual wield our weapons now. Got the two SMGs and it's just Master is so cool and Halo 2 is such a good game. So yeah, That box art for me, I think is is freaking awesome.
00:48:22
Speaker
Mm hmm. That is good. I know I actually speaking of Halo, I actually think the Halo for box art might be the best of the Halo arts, honestly, how he's like crouching, and holding the rifle behind him, looking ahead. And it's got like this cool kind of ship swirly effect above him.
00:48:39
Speaker
It's pretty cool. Yeah. But yeah, I i was torn between many like many of the Halo artwork. The first the first three are great. I love all three of those games. ODST's covers. Awesome. Even Halo Force covers. Awesome. I mean, five is actually pretty good, too. It's just that that game's terrible. But yeah, all all the games artworks are great. But yeah, two is the iconic one.
00:48:59
Speaker
Yeah. Dual wielding the SMG. So let you know, look what you can do in this game. But yeah, so good. Very good. Yeah. So my next, unless you guys got more to say about Halo.
00:49:11
Speaker
I thought you did Red Dead Redemption 2. No, it's cheating and just use it going off of yours. Okay. Yeah. A little honorable mention. My next one though is, I guess I could have said this one earlier on my list, but it's the Bioshock infinite reverse. So if you guys remember on when they were released, it came out the reverse because everyone complained about the cover. Cause it was just Cooper. that his name? Cooper.
00:49:37
Speaker
standing there with the shotgun and everyone's like, this is so stupid. Why is it so generic? So they gave you an alternate and the alternate cover is so gorgeous. that I sent it in Zencaster, this orange cover, like with this, like kind of a charcoal sketch of the songbird. And it's just so beautiful. I wish they had done like a more sketchy version of the logo. That's the only thing it's kind of sticks out when it's not the same art style as the rest of the image. But That cover is absolutely beautiful. And so I had to include it.
00:50:11
Speaker
Yeah, that is a very beautiful, awesome cover art and a very beautiful, awesome game as well. Yes, love that game. Yeah. Alright.
00:50:22
Speaker
So, my next game here. This is going to be another kind of simple, clean, beautiful one. Simple and clean is the way. Sorry.
00:50:34
Speaker
Absolutely. Exactly. Kingdom Hearts. Dragon Age Origins. not The white cover. Not Valegard? No. No. Bale Darks cover is good, too. I like. It's actually a gorgeous art, too. But it's OK. We don't claim that game. Origins is the best one, though, for sure. Yeah. The white background, the red dragon coming in. And in the dragon, kind of similar to the ah the left, the the zombie one, the dying light one or whatever.
00:51:01
Speaker
um You know, you got the characters in the background. You got Morrigan. You got the freaking whoever this random knight is. I don't know. ah yeah But yeah, it's just an amazing game. One of the best games that everyone should play.
00:51:14
Speaker
And it's an awesome cover art. Even the EA logo they did in like that red dragon aspect on at the bottom right. It's just awesome. du Shout out to Dragon Age Origin. Beautiful cover art.
00:51:24
Speaker
Dude, I absolutely love because so me being a designer, whenever I do artwork for certain companies, they give you brand guidelines of what you can and can't do with their logo. And they're like, you have to use certain fonts and all like they give you all this stuff. And I love when companies alter their logos to match the artwork. It looks so good because there are some companies that do not allow you to do that. So you'll have this beautiful like, for example, like a painterly looking artwork. And then it's just this really bland.
00:51:53
Speaker
logo like just plastered on it. I'm like, I'm like, you should let me alternate or alter it to look like the rest of the artwork. Cause then your logo just seamlessly blends in instead of it looking like someone just, you know, plastered it on there. It's an afterthought. So the fact that EA and Bioware did that with their logo on this cover makes it look so much better than if it was just the bland EA logo. So I love as a designer, I absolutely love that.
00:52:20
Speaker
Yeah. Absolutely. Good stuff. I just realized that I freaking missed one that was supposed to be lower, but I'll i'll bring it out later. It's fine. It's okay. I was like, why do I only have two games? Anyway, Sean.
00:52:34
Speaker
what do you First of all, give me 10 minutes on the Dragon Age Origins cover art, how great it is. Oh, it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. So good. You never played that game, did you? I've never played Dragon Age. never Shame. Shame on you, sir.
00:52:48
Speaker
But what is your next cover art? right. So my next cover art comes from one of my favorite video game series of all time, Super Smash Brothers. But it's my least favorite of the Smash games. The original Smash Bros. is my least favorite. it's pretty common sentiment around the um smash community that just because it hasn't aged the best but that original box art with that art or the art style it's like that the hand-drawn uh animation um i i think it's so cool it says duke it out it has the automatopia sound effect like the boom pow zap biff And really captures the essence of what Smash Bros is. We were just fighting with these Nintendo characters. I think it's such a good box art. I think it's really cool. You even have the bomb bomb, which is an item kind of walking around. You get like Kirby in this in the um red part um with Link there, too. I think it's such good box art.
00:53:38
Speaker
I thought that was Zelda. That's that's it. That's Link. Is it Link? Yeah, I can't tell because it's it's all red. Yeah, it looks a little feminine there. But anyway, it's Link.
00:53:49
Speaker
i um I completely forgot about this log or this artwork because when you said Super Smash Bros., I was thinking Melee for some reason. I was like like, that one kind of sucks. what do you talking about? Then I looked up this one. i was like, oh my gosh, I completely forgot forgot about this beautiful cartoon art. Yeah, that is so good. ah i mean I love Smash Bros. Notoriously bad covers other than this one.
00:54:15
Speaker
That's a good pick. but say It's clean. It's very cool. yeah i love It's not bad, but that's just because it looks very epic of having like 70 characters on it. I just i love with the automata. The zap. The biff. It captures like what Smash Bros is.
00:54:31
Speaker
Yeah. Okay.
00:54:35
Speaker
Good stuff. Good stuff. Good stuff. Who's next? am up next. And this one, I will say I love this art and this game, which is controversial because a lot of people don't like this game. But the OG Titanfall, that like sunset background of the guy just outside of the Titan chilling on the gun is so cool looking. I absolutely love this artwork. I also really love this game.
00:55:03
Speaker
Unapologetically, I thought this game was very overhated. do understand the fact that the campaign at the the game was literally you just playing multiplayer with a guy talking at the start. like it was The campaign, I will say, that's a 2 out of 10. It is bad to be considering that a campaign. That is...
00:55:20
Speaker
not good But the gameplay of this game is so much fun that I absolutely love it. But yeah, Titanfall 2, it had okay artwork. It's like the guy running on the wall in front of the other Titan. It's it's fine. But the the first Titanfall's artwork, that I just absolutely love that look. because Mostly because of the...
00:55:40
Speaker
Also, for people who don't know, in graphic design, there are ah colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel, and that is blue and orange. And so seeing that blue light coming out with the orange background is just an absolutely gorgeous look. And so, yeah, Titanfall OG's cover. Absolutely love this artwork.
00:55:58
Speaker
Great pick. Great game. I think this game was probably hated because it was an Xbox exclusive. That is true. It wasn't. It wasn't because not only was it an Xbox going to do is an Xbox one exclusive. Yeah, which is the low, one and low, low bit of double gut punch.
00:56:16
Speaker
Yeah, and if this game was on PlayStation as well, Multiplat, I bet people would have. I think, great yeah, the non-campaign, too, I think that hurt. Yeah, that that that definitely hurt. In like hindsight, that's what hurted, but at launch, it was because it was an x Xbox One game, and PS4 was so huge that something only being on Xbox One, we're like, ooh, I would have played that on Xbox. That was kind of peak peak ah console war fanboy times back then, yeah. Which again, as I've said, I'm a Xbox One defender. I love that console. Even though it was underpowered.
00:56:48
Speaker
x Xbox One X was the best of that era, obviously, because that console was powerful. But I loved that VCR with the camera on it. It was It was big. Xbox, record that.
00:57:02
Speaker
yeah ah Ugly console, but I loved that Kinect, man. though I unapologetically loved that Kinect. Stupid it was auto-packed in there, but loved it.
00:57:14
Speaker
Well, here we go. nick tunes mlb It looks better. plays better. with connect I bet it does. Yep. all right. My next one here. This is the one that I forgot. This was actually great ah rated like eight for me. But anyway, whatever. Sleeping Dogs. And I'm talking about the original one. they're all They're both good, actually. The definitive one is good, too. But the Sleeping Dogs, where it's kind of like gray color scheme, um you got all the characters on the front.
00:57:40
Speaker
In the middle. At the top, you have Hong Kong, the cityscape. And then at the bottom, you have like this little fight between the triads and the police. There's like a police car and a bike and stuff. And it's just super cool.
00:57:52
Speaker
Very nice. I love this game. i I'm going to replay this game soon. I actually bought it on Steam not long ago so I can play it again. Nice. But anyway, yes. Sleeping Dogs. Incredible game.
00:58:03
Speaker
Good box art. My number eight, despite where I'm saying it now. Yeah, because I mean, it's not surprising with it being a ah set game set in Japan, but it's like a manga cover and it looks awesome. I i absolutely love that artwork. And that I remember that was one of the reasons I almost played it when it came out was because I love that because I've been sold on games by art. a lot as you said I think we all were when we were younger. Yeah. And so seeing this, I was I absolutely loved it. But then finding out I was like a GTA game, I'm like,
00:58:32
Speaker
But it's one day. Very different. It's very different. Yeah, it's different from GT. I'll definitely I'll definitely play it. Yeah. But when at the at that age of what this wasn't this a PS3 Xbox 360 game. Yeah. So at that time, my gaming purchase was very limited. So I I passed on it, but. Now I will go back. I will play this game eventually. Because I remember you said it's not that long, right? It's not like a 20-hour game or something. 20 hours. Yeah, about 20, 25 hours.
00:59:00
Speaker
yeah so i'll get I'll get around to it eventually. yeah Because I know you've hyped this one up so much that I'm like, all right, I got to fucking try it. It's one of my favorite games of all time. there's not there Everything about the game is incredible.
00:59:11
Speaker
i god The story, the combat, the characters, the world. It's just ah it's amazing. Even the driving is fun. Aren't they making a movie with Shang-Chi playing the lead role? I don't know. But I'll watch it if so. But I have to hit you with the ah actually it's not in Japan.
00:59:26
Speaker
It's in Hong Kong, china'm sorry China. yeah yeah which of Which I think is cooler because everything's in Japan. It's kind of unique to be in China. Yeah, I should have known that with the dragons on the cover.
00:59:37
Speaker
That's more Chinese than Japanese. It's an awesome game, and you should play it. you could Like I said, play it instead of Ice City. It's better. Play what you want, though. We will see. All right. Maybe I'll do both. Be an overachiever.
00:59:49
Speaker
Yeah, do it. All right, Sean, what do you got, sir? I got Uncharted 3, Drake's Deception, the original one, not the Game of the Year edition. The original one is Drake just kind of staring off. it's into He's in the desert area, which is a huge like set piece in Uncharted 3 with the plane that plane, another huge set piece where you're running out of the plane. and uncharted 3 with the plane crashing in the background i just think it's it really captures like uh this is supposed to be like the end of nate's story obviously we got uncharted 4 but um and the wrap-up of the trilogy um and like i said it includes like that that desert part of uncharted 3 is so good too like i freaking love that and it it kind of captures like nate this is like nate's like supposed to be his last you know jury but uh yeah i really like uncharted 3's box art me too
01:00:38
Speaker
Yeah, but i all four, even even Lost Legacy's cover is gorgeous, even though it's a little little less... ah It's just kind of them standing on the cover. But it's still a gorgeous color scheme in that one. But yeah, all four all five of these games have gorgeous artwork. The first one's a little dated. It looks a little, obviously... A little 2070.
01:00:59
Speaker
Yeah, but but two, three, and especially four. I think I almost did four on my list because even though it's it's very... Bland in the sense that it's him just standing there, but the the dark likeness of it, of him having his head down, like looking like he's defeated kind of look to it. It was a very midnight midnight blue kind of eman color scheme. It's it's absolutely gorgeous. But three, I I think looking I'm looking at them all right now. I do think three is probably the best. So I'm standing with that plant with that plane crash behind him. It is. It's so cool. Yeah. Yeah.
01:01:36
Speaker
Very good. I like it. Very cool. Yeah. Yeah. All right. Numero dos for you, boy. This one... Great game, even though it's a game where you make choices and your but your choices don't really matter that much to the story. it just kind of the ending. And that is Heavy Rain.
01:01:55
Speaker
This is so good of that origami whatever on the front with there' that speck of blood on like the foot of the origami thing with obviously it raining on it it. is just so it sets the mood for that game absolutely perfectly. And it is a game.
01:02:14
Speaker
That I actually really do love. But again, like I said, it's like a game that has 40 endings, but it doesn't change like who the killer is. It doesn't really change major plot points. It just kind of changes how the story ends for each character. So it's really not not a great version of... like At the time, it was like, oh my gosh, you can make all these... yeah it was I think if it came out like four years later, they would have...
01:02:41
Speaker
you know, been able to change the, it it was, i think it was a little ahead of its time. And that it it came up before the the blue, the, um you know, all those games were coming out. yeah My biggest thing about, remember about Heavy Rain was 2010, summer 2010.
01:02:55
Speaker
summer two thousand and ten So right before I was going to the high school, i was talking to this girl, Camilla, a huge crush on her. And she's like, yeah playing this game called Heavy Rain. I go whoa, you play video games? What? Girls play video games? I was like, oh! Turns out girls

Girls in Gaming and Cover Art Comparisons

01:03:09
Speaker
do play video games. It's crazy. Other than my sister, girls play games? I'm like, yeah. Yeah, Camilla. Yeah, she was playing Heavy Rain. I remember that. Sean was in love.
01:03:17
Speaker
Especially when you heard that. Yeah. i I thought it was me and my, me and my buddy Donnie Russ, I'd play in basketball and I had my, ah my first ever phone. it was an iPhone four just sitting there and I'm like, I'm texting her and I'm like, she's playing heavy rain. Donnie's like, Whoa, this is cool.
01:03:33
Speaker
Yeah. Also, I said, Jason, Jason, Jason. I will say, I think if I remember right, the cover art that I'm talking about, I think that's the European cover art. I think the American had like the four people. and The American has the four people on it. Yeah. Which is lame. Yeah. That one's ugly as hell. The the European one where it's just the origami piece. That rain. i look That is the one I'm talking about. Yeah. It's absolutely gorgeous.
01:03:59
Speaker
It is. Good time. It is. You know, I do love, I love Quantic Dream. You know, I love ah Detroit Become Human. yeah it's a lot and i did And I even played ah Beyond Two Souls. I beat that game. That's the one that people kind of hate on, but I still enjoyed it. I thought it was pretty good. Wasn't Ellie Page in that, I thought? Maybe not.
01:04:17
Speaker
Yeah, she was iconic. I remember because it was because came out around the same time as Last of Us, and everyone was talking about how Ellie looked like... ah Ellen page. And so had to change Ellie's look. That's funny. But yeah, that's a good game as well. But believe it or not, I actually have never beaten heavy rain. I need to go back and play that. something like I've played the beginning and fell off for some reason.
01:04:40
Speaker
i absolutely I absolutely love that game. good Good cover art though. Good cover art. I like that. Alright guys, we so we're at the final two. okay This is where it gets ultra iconic for me. okay No more random stuff. No more no more Kingdom Hearts. No, I'm just kidding. ah Kingdom Hearts is good. It was on my list. But we're getting super iconic now. And

16-bit Era Art Style and Iconic Covers

01:05:03
Speaker
this is Super Mario Bros. 3. The yellow background. Raccoon Mario just stunting on people. Looking awesome. It's so clean.
01:05:14
Speaker
It's one of the best games of all time too. Well, was, you know, you know what saying? Amazing. Super Mario Brothers 3 for the NES. Great. It's a great pick. And it shows it, like you said, it shows off the raccoon Mario. Like, this is this new power up.
01:05:28
Speaker
It's crazy. And that was, um yeah, great pick. Awesome pick. yeah it oh my yeah It's very simple, but it's just gorgeous. I almost put this on. It just missed my list. Yeah. Yeah.
01:05:39
Speaker
Got to have it there. Got to have it. There's only one that's better than this, in my opinion, which you'll hear soon. What do you guys, what do you think, Hodge? No, yeah, it's, I mean, all of the Super Mario Brothers, um covers are like iconic to me, especially the the first one. id Three is obviously a great pick, but like the first one of like that, it's that n NES cover where it's just like the fire Mario with a, with a, yeah like a fireball and like the the actual, like and actual eight bit Mario on there. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But no, yeah. um Super Mario Brothers three. Yeah. That is. ah Yeah. Just,
01:06:15
Speaker
All of the old school ones are so iconic. Mario, I mean, even like, this isn't on my list, but like Super Mario World 2, Yoshi's Island, that box art's freaking awesome with Yoshi and Baby Mario. Was it World 2? Yeah, World 2. Yeah, that box art's awesome. I'll just remember.
01:06:31
Speaker
Shout out to Mario. Yeah. I loved the old, like, obviously I love the, the eight bit looking and like the really well done, like, but I, don't know the old school where it was like a little cartoony and a little off in a way. Like it didn't look so clean that artwork. I always loved that look. I feel like that's, that's like the 16 bit error right there. Like that. Yeah. yes the ball Yeah.
01:06:56
Speaker
yeah even even like um bleeding into like the ps1 and 64 or like that box art yeah yeah so good yeah okay all right well that's the best one so far well what do you got sean what's your all right my number two this is a game i actually have never played um my i always i wanted it like really bad but i never bought it but that is punch out on wii like the wii punch out the game that came out in 2009 it was like the reboot of punch out i think this box art's awesome it has little mac kind of like punching off and then has punch out with like a big popping letters with the two um boxing um gloves kind hanging each other and then you can see in the background all of like little mac's like enemies or opponents um i think it's really cool i think it it just it
01:07:42
Speaker
It's very eye-catchy. It's very poppy. And I think it really kind of captures what like Punch-Out's about, you know, fighting. Yeah, it's pretty cool. It's funny. It has that that background that like everybody, including me, was using on for YouTube thumbnails in 2012, where it's got like the little, you know, Hodge, like the little lines. The rays. See behind him, the little ray, yeah, where it's two different colors and shit. like Every thumbnail was that back in the day. It's funny. I had that on our Games Over Plastic thumbnails for a while. It was hidden in the background, but I had those there.
01:08:17
Speaker
Nice, nice. yeah Yeah, that's a good one. ah it's Good look. I like it. Good choice. Sean. All right. Well, guys, we're up to number one.
01:08:27
Speaker
This is crazy. This is where it gets absolutely the best ever. So what do you have, Hodge, for your number one? All right. My number one, and NHL 10 and 11 because the Blackhawks are on the cover. Yeah, Madden 18 because Tom Brady's on the cover.
01:08:40
Speaker
ah No, I'm just kidding. I do love those covers, but that as a Blackhawks fan, but no, those are not my number one. ah My number one is actually Until Dawn. o That cover with the skull hourglass where the sand is falling as snow on the cabin. It is such a cool artwork. i it like Everything about that is so well laid out. The fact that it's an hourglass and the top is the skull and that the sand falling is actually snow on the cabin showing the the time running out for the people. It's just...
01:09:11
Speaker
ah

Tomb Raider and Zelda Cover Art Humor

01:09:12
Speaker
artwork it is beautiful absolutely love that love the movie best movie i've ever seen in my greatest movie ever ah but yeah until dawn's cover and again cannot wait for until dawn 2 the fact that they announced that so hyped i still need to play until dawn remastered even though it's very alan wake remastered and the fact that nothing looks better and it's just kind of a re-release but i still want to play it again because i really really love that game so yeah until dawn Fantastic game, fantastic cover art Okay Great pay i mean yeah great pick, great game You can't go wrong with that Yeah you look at it again I wasn't looking Oh yeah yeah yeah yeah, I remember this now Yeah, with the hourglass and the skull on the top Yeah This is sweet, yeah, this is this a really good pick And a great game Alright I think that's that's that's worthy of being number one
01:10:10
Speaker
yeah I mean, it was technically number two by Kingdom Hearts, but I have reordered it. Oh, okay. Gotcha, gotcha. All right. Well, boys. i already know you're number one. I'm going guess it. Mario 64.
01:10:22
Speaker
No. No, you're wrong. All right. BMX XXX. No. No, no, no, no. The guy. My number one. the guy game. the kind guys you do forever My number one, this is iconic as hell, and it is Tomb Raider Underworld.
01:10:39
Speaker
Tomb Raider Underworld. This cover art is just... It's great. I just love it. Very nice. For reasons. No, that's a joke, of course. Although it is nice and it's a lot. This is a Wii game. I've never even heard of it. Yeah, I hadn't heard of it either. was on PS2. It was during the lull of Tomb Raider. randomly saw this and I was like...
01:11:04
Speaker
This will be a funny one here. yeah This is this a good Gooner cover art. You got to love it. Laura looking good. But that's not my number one, though. That's not my number one. My number one. This is iconic as fuck. Okay.
01:11:15
Speaker
The Legend or Zelda 2, The Adventures of Link. And I put there you go. Make it simple for you guys. yeah Put in the the sword, the master sword, I'm assuming. It is. On the gold background, it's just clean and beautiful and awesome. and Even though that game was kind ass, though. It's like a weird side-rolling It's not a bad game, but it's not like a Zelda game.
01:11:37
Speaker
Yeah. But I love that cover. As a kid, I hate that game. But that it is gorgeous artwork, though. That is, yes, iconic. I mean, even the first one's awesome with this with the shield. It's also gorgeous. But, yeah, that's... I was very close to including a couple Zelda games because a lot of them have gorgeous art. Like, the Japanese version of Breath of the Wild, the English one's fine, but the Japanese Breath of the Wild cover is absolutely gorgeous. yeah Tears of the Kingdom's cover's gorgeous. I remember Twilight... i think it's Twilight Princess that has a really... Twilight Princess is simple, but really good. It has Link and Minda.
01:12:13
Speaker
Minda just... Yeah. yeah That's really good. Yeah, it's a good a lot of Zelda games. But yeah, that that very clean, very 80s painterly sword. Oh, very early NES, too.
01:12:26
Speaker
Yeah. Yes. Yeah. But it's gorgeous. Yeah. Very good. Very good.

Impact of Game Cover Art and Physical Games

01:12:31
Speaker
All right. Well, I've won. i had the best cover art. That has been games over Plasma. Sean, you have like one last chance to wow us. What do you have? I also have a Zelda game, and that is ah Legend Zelda Wind Waker HD. So not the original one. The original Wind Waker box for America kind of sucked.
01:12:48
Speaker
um The Japanese one was really cool, but the Wind Waker HD for Wii U that came out in 2014. think box art is awesome. It has, like, it has Toon Link... um uh toon link up there it has all his you know companions that he meets along the way it has that cartoony arcs out but then you have like the silhouette of a cartoon ganon in the background and you also have the various creatures you meet along the way flying through you have the um the king of the red lion the the boat that's that's the boat is you know uh incorporated into the legend of zelda logo um wind wicker hd i just i think this is awesome uh yeah
01:13:25
Speaker
Yeah, du I forgot how boring the normal artwork was. Oh, it's terrible. Yeah, the gold with, like the withdth again, the the rays, and then there's like the faded is the boat. like yeah That's not... But yeah, this HD one is awesome.
01:13:41
Speaker
It is cool. A lot going on, but in a good way. Yeah, I like that. I like the hand-drawn stuff. It's pretty cool. Oh, yeah. So good. All right.
01:13:52
Speaker
Good stuff, guys. Good list. Let's go ahead and for the audio listeners, why don't we go ahead and recap our our stuff. And why don't you go ahead and start, Sean? what's your What was your 10? All right. My number 10 was Nicktoons MLB. My number nine was Kingdom Hearts 2. My number eight was Luigi's Mansion. Number seven, Chrono Trigger. Number six, Dragon Ball Z Budokai 2. Number five, Halo 2. Number four, Smash Bros. on 64. Number three, Uncharted 3, Drake's Deception. Number two, Punch-Out for the Wii. And number one The Legend of Zelda, The Wind Waker HD.
01:14:25
Speaker
Yeah. All right, I'll go next. Number 10 was Skyrim. Number nine, Bioshock. Number eight, Kingdom Hearts. Seven, GTA Vice City. Six, Assassin's Creed Odyssey. The best game ever. Enjoy it, Sean.
01:14:39
Speaker
Number five, it's not the best game ever. It's awesome, though. Number five, Red Dead Redemption 2. Number four, Dragon Age Origins. Number three, Sleeping Dogs. Two was Super Mario Brothers 3. And number one was Tomb Raider Underworld. I mean, Zelda 2 Adventures of Link.
01:14:55
Speaker
Hodge. Number 10. Last case of Benedict Fox. Then Dishonored Definitive Edition. Kingdom Hearts. Hogwarts Legacy. Dying Light. Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. Bioshock Infinite's reverse cover. Titanfall. Heavy Rain's European cover. And Until Dawn.
01:15:12
Speaker
Oh, yeah. Some great picks, guys. Great picks. Awesome box art. Let us know in the comments, boys. What did we miss? Did you guys have any awesome cover arts that you love? Let us know. We'll check them out. Give us write-ins, like I said.
01:15:24
Speaker
And I think this has been a great episode. Shall we go around and do our final thoughts, huh? What do you think? A great episode. A lot of cool box art. I mean, this it's so much fun just to look at the box art of games. like That's what I miss so much about going to Blockbuster and seeing all the box art of all the games. Super fun.
01:15:41
Speaker
Yeah. dude Absolutely. ah Hodge, what are your thoughts? Dude, I i completely agree with that. I still remember, even though I've never played this game. oh my God. Why am I blanking what it's called? Uh,
01:15:54
Speaker
I think legends of Dragoon, right? Isn't that what that game is called? I remember one JRPG. Yeah. Yeah. I just remember seeing that artwork and think it was so cool and always wanted to play it as a kid and then finding out later that it really wasn't that good, but I always want to play purely based off the cover art. And there were so many games like that, where if I wanted to trade in a game, I'd beaten or whatever, I game stop and I'd go and just be looking through the games and like, Ooh, that card, that, that cover's cool. ooh that cover's cool. And,
01:16:20
Speaker
Finding games that way. So

Digital Transition and Emotional Connections

01:16:22
Speaker
yeah, I love talking games. Love talking game art. Love talking football. But yeah, and this was, I'm sorry. No, this was very timely. As Sean mentioned earlier with the death of physical, with Sony killing physical, you know, but so we got these amazing box arts that we're going to lose now. That's just going to be a PDF now on your digital library instead.
01:16:46
Speaker
Yeah. Very sad. Very sad. Dude, I was looking through when I was kind of compiling my list. I was looking through my achievements and trophies and stuff just to kind of remember some games and The digital images are not the box art on half the games. It's just like an image from the game. And it's like, oh, come on. I want i want to see that iconic artwork for everything. I don't want to just see some random wallpaper. Random.
01:17:12
Speaker
Yeah, slapped on the game. So, yeah, physical dying is is a shame. But, again, I've been saying i still do buy physical games here and there, especially on the Wii. Or not Wii. the switch because nintendo games hold their value if you do want to sell them but um yeah it's just sad because i stopped getting physical when they basically made them worthless because all it became was a download key and so at that point i'm like why should i have physicals and so it's really stupid that they're killing physical because yeah i mean they've been killing it for a decade at this point now they're just putting the you know death knell in but Yeah, it's it's sad.
01:17:49
Speaker
R.I.P. Sean, did you ever play Legend of Dragoon? actually not we good I've actually no i've never played it. I always heard it wasn't very good. The cover art looks great, though. so all right Well, guys, this has been Games Over Plastic, episode number 70. I am Midnight.
01:18:08
Speaker
Sean and Hodge are here. We are going to bid you adieu. Everyone have a great week. Goodbye. Bye. e too, Brute. okay
