Introduction to Metal News

Hello and welcome back to Minds of Metal. My name is Daria. And I'm Laz. And today we're bringing you another one of our new, what is it called, segments, sections, whatever. This is the metal news where we're going to just sort of do videos and talk about any news in heavy metal. It kind of does what it says on the tin. And we thought today, do you want to tell them what we're going to do?

Download Festival 2023 Lineup Leak

00:00:30
Speaker
Yeah, so today we're going to be looking at and discussing downloads lineup for 2023. So download 2023. Yeah. So the news came out on Monday night. They announced it on the radio show for BBC, something or other. Um, and we've got the news, but unfortunately for download, the poster leaked about a week before, which is a shame because it's never nice when that happens. Yeah, we saw a bit earlier. We did. Yeah, we did see it.

Headliner Variety Concerns

00:00:57
Speaker
So the first thing I think I want to bring up is just that we've got Metallica headlining two nights, which I think is interesting because if I had it my way, that wouldn't be it. And I love Metallica. But I think if you're celebrating, you know, the whole point of this is that you're celebrating 20 years of Download Festival and you got Bring Me The Horizon, which are kind of like
00:01:17
Speaker
the future of metal, which we call them that, they're certainly doing their part in progressing metal towards a more accessible audience. You've got Slipknot, who are like, you know, 30 year old band, everyone loves them, but they're well known. And then you've got Metallica, 50 year old legends. I feel like, you know, we get three headliners every year. A fourth one would have been really special. And I've made some notes here. Iron Maiden, System of the Down, Ramstein, Ozzy Osbourne.
00:01:43
Speaker
He's on tour next year around that time. Avenged Sevenfold or even someone a bit away from metal like Muse. Download is not just about heavy metal, download is about rock and metal. And I think having a band like Muse or Royal Blood doing a Thursday night would be really different than getting a new kind of audience in.

Disappointment with Repeated Headliner

00:02:01
Speaker
So yeah, I mean, what do you think about the Metallica twice? I mean, they told us they're not going to repeat any songs, but yeah. How do you feel about that? Honestly, I don't feel great about that because as much as I would love to see Metallica live, I've never seen them live. And it's very exciting for me if we decide to go, if we decide to go.
00:02:20
Speaker
yeah we're undecided we're not yet decided so i think obviously they're trying to celebrate you know the 20 years of the festival yeah it's a huge obviously anniversary and stuff and i was just a bit let down by the other oh okay yeah Metallica huge band but like you said if you're doing four days may as well do four headliners because the thing is is that
00:02:47
Speaker
I see it as a lose-lose for anyone. If you love Metallica, it's cool. You get to see him twice, but you could have seen Iron Maiden. And if you don't like Metallica, well, that's half of the headliners out. You've got four headliners and two of them, Metallica and Metallica, you don't like. So you're paying a full price ticket for, you know, double set. And they're trying to go for something special here with the 20 years of download. And for me, this doesn't quite hit the mark.
00:03:14
Speaker
Okay, but if we focus on the positives, okay? If we talk about positive things, because there are quite a few things that I found quite interesting and different for this year, for the next year.

Exploration of Festival Sub-Genres

00:03:25
Speaker
We've got so many different sub-genres coming in. So many. You know what I mean, Jenny? We've got metalcore, deathcore. We've got, I mean, placebo.
00:03:35
Speaker
yeah you know placebo and simple plan that i mean the placebo are a rock band like i love them i've seen them a few times live they're a great band but um they're just like a rock a punk punk rock band maybe um so you got symphonic metal yeah within temptation and uh evanescence as well evanescence um what i did notice actually was that quite there's a quite big
00:03:57
Speaker
lean towards Mecklecore for this year. Bring Me the Horizon, Alexis on Fire, Architects, Parkway Drive. There's a few more Polaris down there, Motionless in White. I know we get sometimes we get bogged down in all these sub-genres, but I think in terms of, there's quite a lot of Mecklecore there. Yeah, yeah, lots, plenty. And I think that's gonna bring younger audience in and it's gonna really shake up the sort of, not age gap,
00:04:27
Speaker
But just generally the demographic is going to be, you know, different. And when you bring the Horizon Headlining Friday night, that kind of, that's the, that's the justification for getting bands like Polaris on. What more do you expect from this lineup?

Anticipated Additions to the Lineup

00:04:42
Speaker
I'm hoping for corn, because I love corn. And actually I saw them live when I didn't like metal, it's just ridiculous. We went to Gig, I took her to the show to see Slipknot and supporting Slipknot with corn.
00:04:54
Speaker
And Dash is there and she's like, sorry, this isn't for me. That was the first night I ever exposed you to metal. And since then, the rest is history. I think it needs, I mean, if you look at the poster, so get the poster up in front of you. I think Dash can put it up somewhere.
00:05:10
Speaker
There's a gap, I think, bringing the Horizon Metallica and Slipknot are definitely, well, I mean, they are 100% the headliners. Then the bands after it, Alex is on fire, Architects Distillers and Disturb, I'm not convinced that they're the bands that are gonna be playing before the headliners. I don't think there's gonna be more bands there. I think there needs to be, because at the moment, I don't wanna pay a ticket for these bands. Again, there's some good acts here. There's good acts and some bands I'd see, but would I pay that much? For me,
00:05:39
Speaker
I'm looking for a few bigger names below the headliners. I'm looking at your Enter Shikaris, your Killswitch Engage, your Hailstorm, Corn. Pantera are doing a reunion thing. I mean, obviously it's not the same without Diamond Vinny, but Pantera there, that would be great just before Slipknot, maybe. Machinehead, Kojira, Trivium, just kind of one of those bands that have a really big following.
00:06:02
Speaker
You know, no, I completely repeat the albums, you know, second headline is because I just don't think these headline, these second ones at the moment are quite making it for me. So undoubtedly, you know, right at the bottom, it says plus many more. So we're going to get more.
00:06:17
Speaker
I just hope that there's a couple more bigger names and we might go for a date. I love the fact that download are trying to reach out to new audiences, but it's just a shame that I don't love all these bands. So yes, there has to be something else for me there, personally for me to buy a ticket and go.

Ticket Purchase Dilemma

00:06:35
Speaker
I think we were heavily considering buying a ticket early because we knew that it was the 20 year one. We kind of thought this would be a good lineup. Should we pay for a ticket now before we even know what they are?
00:06:48
Speaker
I don't know, am I gonna say I'm glad we didn't? I'm glad. Definitely. I suppose so, yeah. I'm definitely glad we didn't. I'd wait, yeah. So I think that my takeaway from this is that it's an okay announcement. I'd give it, I mean, let's have a quick scan.
00:07:02
Speaker
I suppose from I suppose from a metal fans point of view, it's pretty cool. You know, we haven't talked about disturbed on there. Ville Valo, he's he's the singer of him. So this is his own ghost of big now. Everyone's loving ghosts at the moment. So I think to metal fans, this is a pretty solid lineup. You know, maybe a seven out of 10 and eight out of 10. For me, it's kind of sitting at a six because like, yeah, I've said all my points need a few more big names on there. And I would ideally, you know,
00:07:28
Speaker
Imagine, bring me on Thursday, Metallica on Friday, Maiden on Saturday and Slitmongue Sunday, or a place maiden with System of a Down, Avenged Sevenfold, any of those bands eventually start, and that would be cracking. So whilst I love Metallica, whilst I'd love to listen to four hours of songs with no repeats,
00:07:47
Speaker
It feels a little bit cheated. Feels like I've been a bit cheated to be honest. I feel like that. And to me it's lower than you. Like you said 6 out of 10. For me it's like 4 or 5 out of 10 honestly guys. So these are our thoughts and I think we will do another video when the more bands are announced to tell you whether we will be going in fact and yeah to just share.
00:08:11
Speaker
our thoughts with you. And if the download rating goes up or down and if we're going to go as well as the report
