Conor Fowler: Welcome, welcome once again to a another episode of Apocalypse Duds. I am Connor Flower.
matty: And I am Matty Smith.
Conor Fowler: And.
matty: And... Yeah. It's the day after the election.
Conor Fowler: The Blue Tsunami!
matty: Woo -hoo!
Conor Fowler: And we have... In our studio today... Someone who maybe we was responsible. For the Benghazi attack. We have In studio, we have Hillary Rodham Clinton, everyone, ladies and gentlemen, days and them.
Shane: She is.
Conor Fowler: Give it up give it up for it for Hillary.
Darren S Johnston: ah
Conor Fowler: She's got stainless steel thighs, as you can see. And the thing, as in most good jokes. the joke is on the back of the box actually so i'm just going to read you a quote from um Kim Jong Un.
Conor Fowler: I'd be getting nervous if I was one of those nutjobs.
Shane: Not bad.
Darren S Johnston: Da -da -ching!
Conor Fowler: You like that you like that you like that
matty: Not bad.
Darren S Johnston: Chau.
Shane: it did
matty: Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, we've got our friends ah Shane Joseph and Darren Johnson back in the... in the studio. It's been a while since we talked to either of you.
Shane: Oh yeah.
Conor Fowler: I was going to say Ivy experts.
Darren S Johnston: I know.
Conor Fowler: I feel like that is not.
matty: IV experts.
Darren S Johnston: uh -huh Well, yeah.
Conor Fowler: That is not too much.
matty: uh
Shane: I mean...
Conor Fowler: I feel like that's like exactly correct.
Shane: two or four hours.
Conor Fowler: You guys are really.
matty: I haven't... Shane, I'm going to say that you're like one of the... like, forebears of Polo. at this point like i feel like you you find as much polo as grails does at
Shane: I mean, where was my to invitation to Polo Fest? It got lost in the mail, I guess.
Darren S Johnston: ah ah
matty: Honestly...
Conor Fowler: That's what the book I'm saying.
matty: I... maybe i'm Maybe I'm wrong on this. like It looked kind of fun, but I feel like I would i would be... So annoyed with all the dorks. Maybe because it was in Japan, it was it was cooler than it would be here.
Shane: Yeah. i'm I'm wondering if they're going to maybe do some versions in the US somewhere or something.
matty: Yeah.
Shane: Let's do it. but
matty: Yeah, I'm not trying to shit all over it.
Shane: i don't No no no no.
matty: I'm just... Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Shane: I have a few friends.
matty: Bye.
Conor Fowler: We got to an interesting...
Shane: I have a few friends that went. and It looked awesome. so
Conor Fowler: Yeah, we got to an interesting point. with Dr. Henrik Vilberg. uh in our last episode we beginning some traction which is unusual even ethan wong has reposted it ah How many times did Ralph vote for Trump?
Conor Fowler: And. I think not only a great question. But like. A good piece of trivia.
Darren S Johnston: Wow.
Shane: I mean, i don't I don't think we'll ever know.
matty: Yeah. It's...
Conor Fowler: i think we can be I think we can be relatively certain for at least the past two.
Shane: I'm sure through this menswear world, we can maybe, maybe get an answer.
matty: Right, right.
Shane: before
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: I mean, honestly, like, I haven't really looked...
Shane: All right.
Conor Fowler: We got to ask RL Grails.
Shane: second
matty: Yeah, Grails would probably know, but, like, I...
Darren S Johnston: Okay.
Conor Fowler: He actually went to the voting booth for Ralph and voted for him.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah. and cast his vote.
matty: ah
Conor Fowler: It's electoral fraud, top to bottom, yeah.
Darren S Johnston: a
matty: Yeah, yeah
Shane: We tried to vote for Ralph. to be president. They're like, sir, you can't.
Conor Fowler: We all voted for Ralph. We all wrote him in, but we all wrote as him too.
Shane: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: Uh...
Shane: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: I wrote in Oscar the gar Grouch a few times, i will I will confess.
Darren S Johnston: yes
Shane: I'm a fan.
Conor Fowler: I mean, because there are some cases like...
Shane: Okay.
Conor Fowler: ah The Kweisi Mfume race, like that guy's a really bad guy and he was running unopposed as a Democrat.
Darren S Johnston: Hmm.
Conor Fowler: um they His Wikipedia, you can tell, has been like sterilized by his campaign. But there is a there is a.
Shane: Hmm.
Conor Fowler: sentence in there that I think really bears repeating which is that he fathered five children when he was a teenager. And that's just in the wiki with no comment.
Shane: Whoa.
Shane: Yeah, yeah
Darren S Johnston: Wow. Yeah.
Conor Fowler: Yeah.
Shane: Jesus.
Darren S Johnston: Hmm.
Conor Fowler: Right. And so now he does nothing in Congress.
matty: right
Shane: Hey, I mean
Darren S Johnston: ah Yeah. Yeah. Well, it's important to remember, there at the end of the day, they're politicians, right? uh we we want to ascribe all these attributes to them and we want to describe these kinds of uh you know, this hopefulness, right?
Darren S Johnston: That things are going to change.
Conor Fowler: Well, should we lower our expectations for them?
Darren S Johnston: I think what we need to do is stop looking at it like in its totality and start looking at individuals and really judging them based on their own. merits regardless of party you know I think that thing that's what we so sort of need to do.
matty: Yes. Agreed.
Conor Fowler: Well, you can judge one of the parties. is well known.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah. Yeah.
Conor Fowler: ah they don't like a lot of certain people that are close to me.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: friends of mine even. And the other party is at least quiet on that, right? Like whether they what the Democratic Party hates trans people is another matter. But they're not out there Talking shit.
Darren S Johnston: Right.
matty: I mean, I do think That.
Darren S Johnston: Right. Thank you.
matty: I think that yesterday... has put the fucking nail in the coffin. overall
Darren S Johnston: Hmm.
matty: Like, I know some things happened in Colorado and I think New Mexico.
Darren S Johnston: Mm hmm.
matty: Maybe. with, like, anti -trans bills, but... I think that talking point's fucking done. for the Republicans.
Conor Fowler: Well, because the Democrats tried to do it.
matty: All right.
Conor Fowler: And... Uh... I mean, like I guess they learned their lesson. does that make sense like because the democrats were talking weird shit and then they shut the fuck up
matty: Yeah, yeah. I mean, I'm...
Shane: Yeah, yeah
matty: I'm... Oh, i'm I'm not... excusing that shit at all, but I'm saying, like...
Conor Fowler: Oh no.
Darren S Johnston: thank
matty: Like... I think, and I was talking to a friend about this either last night or this morning, like... The culture war shit of the past. five or six years. like They have nothing anymore.
Darren S Johnston: Mm -mm.
matty: And if it didn't work out this time, and this is... the... you know the consequence of it like that They can't. There's no way they pulled that card again.
Darren S Johnston: Great.
matty: is what I'm saying. Um...
Conor Fowler: Hopefully so hopefully so
Darren S Johnston: Right.
matty: Yeah, I hope so as well.
Conor Fowler: They have to make up a new boogie person.
matty: and
Conor Fowler: i mean they had to make up a new scare a new a new archetype to be scared of
matty: Oh, yeah, yeah.
Shane: enemy
matty: Like...
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: And like, that's not easy, right?
Shane: well
Conor Fowler: Like. uh Muslim guy won. Gay guy won. Women won?
matty: right
Conor Fowler: And like all of those.
matty: trans Trans people?
Conor Fowler: Trans people won.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah, trans? Yeah.
Conor Fowler: And so it's like...
matty: Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: Native American, yeah.
Conor Fowler: ah Right.
matty: Native American, yeah, Deb Haaland.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: I saw that the Navajo Nation elected their first leader, I guess in an independent election.
matty: Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: Oh wow, cool.
matty: Shit.
Conor Fowler: Yeah, which I was like...
Shane: No.
Conor Fowler: I don't know.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: if there's If there are fucking Americans, like they're fucking Americans for sure.
matty: Right. right
Darren S Johnston: Yeah. I think it.
Conor Fowler: So that type of Democrat.
Shane: grief
Conor Fowler: democratic action is worth celebrating, I think.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah, I think I think we need to really. examine ourselves in this country. And ask ourselves, I think James Baldwin said something like about. Why did we have to invent the N word? person? Why was it necessary for this country to invent or have something.
Darren S Johnston: Like... African Americans to be afraid of? Why why was it needed?
matty: right
Darren S Johnston: Right. I think it says more about the national character that it was a. a requirement to have something to be afraid of. and sort of galvanize the population because this is like an old playbook that these guys have been doing.
Darren S Johnston: Like. for the last four or eight years, you know, this whole.
Conor Fowler: We'll watch. there was a There was an Austrian man who was quite fond of this strategy.
Darren S Johnston: Right.
Conor Fowler: uh, And that that did not go super well.
Shane: I've heard of that, you know.
matty: good
Darren S Johnston: Did not go with him. Yeah, but.
Conor Fowler: Uh... for a lot of people involved, but I'm saying like it is a tale as old as time, right?
Darren S Johnston: Yeah. Right.
Conor Fowler: Like the Irish.
Darren S Johnston: Right.
Conor Fowler: the scourge of the the scourge of the british isles the irish and the welsh you know and it went on it went on from there so it's like
Darren S Johnston: Yep.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: Hopefully. Because what I've been saying forever is like. The other party. dehumanizes. The Democratic Party does not really do that.
Darren S Johnston: Hmm.
matty: right
Conor Fowler: And if you are... Dehumanizing any human being. I don't want any part of it.
Shane: Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: And it seems like this is a referendum on that.
matty: Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: Hopefully.
matty: and
Conor Fowler: Hopefully.
matty: I will say, like... Personally, one thing that's been very heartening, because I don't trust a politician as far as I can throw them. I don't care. what letter is by their name, like, unless they're a fucking...
Conor Fowler: And you probably can't throw them very far.
matty: Yeah, probably not.
Darren S Johnston: Okay, great.
matty: Unless they're a fucking anarchist or like an avowed communist like trying to work within the fucking system.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: Get the fuck out of here. I don't give a shit However...
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: What I will say is I've seen a lot of comments and like you know people that are a little bit happier Than they had been in the past.
matty: I don't know few years, but they've also been like, okay, if you are if we're going to give you this power, we're going to make sure you fucking use it. and like That's not something I've really seen.
Shane: yeah
Darren S Johnston: Thank you.
matty: broadly. in the last decade.
Darren S Johnston: Great.
matty: You know, maybe maybe so maybe the tide has turned a little bit maybe like people are starting to fucking realize that like oh these people are not.
Darren S Johnston: What is?
matty: they don't have power over us like if they If they don't do shit we want them to do.
Darren S Johnston: um
matty: We're gonna we're gonna make sure that they like know how fucking angry we are because they don't rule us, we rule them. Or.
Darren S Johnston: Right.
Shane: Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: Bye.
matty: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: And it seems to be in our little pocket as well. Like, it seems like
Conor Fowler: Right, we're in the menswear space. ah It seems a lot different than it ever has been.
matty: Yeah, agreed.
Darren S Johnston: Right.
Conor Fowler: Like.
Shane: yeah
Conor Fowler: vastly different. And like stuff that I think people would have been like. I want to say banned. People would have been banned for discussing. Like people are now like. yeah actually we could probably use a little nuance in this space like it might be nice to uh have a diverse menswear space, which is what I think we've been working toward all along.
matty: right
matty: Yeah, for sure.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Shane: Yeah.
matty: and And like, I think a lot of us have, you know, of a certain age and and younger. Like, not the, you know, not the people that have been wearing Ivy since the fucking 70s or 60s or whatever. like we realized that You know, especially with secondhand and like... trying to be like more environmentally conscious, et cetera, like. all of our decisions have Like they're political inherently because everything in life is political.
Conor Fowler: Hell yeah.
Darren S Johnston: Right.
Conor Fowler: Hell yeah.
matty: You know the like we can go back and talk about the buck mason fucking you know like white power ad or whatever you want to call it like
Conor Fowler: Right, right, right, right.
Darren S Johnston: yeah
matty: You know, like that.
Shane: or account. Hmm.
Conor Fowler: Well, as Howard Zinn says. We can't afford to be neutral on a moving train. And like. That seems to be. way more. powerful than in the past like
matty: Right.
Darren S Johnston: Mm hmm.
Conor Fowler: uh, Even my like diehard Democrat family is like. Yeah, we kind of been doing it badly for... At least 20 years they've been doing it badly.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: Right, right.
Darren S Johnston: yeah and at least they admit that right connor i mean foot put action to power, right? Just not lip service about how great things are going to be once you get into office. but constructively how I'm going to work towards improving.
Darren S Johnston: You know. the situation across the country for... all of us, right? Because
matty: Right.
Darren S Johnston: That contingent that feels a certain way that we're all discussing. in a roundabout way, they're not going to go anywhere. Just because this guy gets out of office, that's it.
matty: right
Darren S Johnston: block of people are still going to be there and guess what they're going to be passing these same values and the same ideas down through the line to their kids and whoever else Right.
matty: totally
Darren S Johnston: So this is always going to be a point of contention in America, this sort of. duality that we got going on. and got to do something about it.
Conor Fowler: Do you have... because I feel like for me, like... I think about this shit a lot. And the thing that I come back to, and I know we've discussed in the show is like, what do you do with these people who think they don't even think they know that the sky is red.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah. That's what's scary.
Conor Fowler: And I don't mean that as like a Republican thing. Like they think truly that the blue sky is the color red and they are convinced firmly of that.
Shane: Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: Well...
Conor Fowler: And so I don't know.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah. I don't know
Conor Fowler: where you go with them.
Darren S Johnston: Right. You could even construe to say, you know, if you want to be extreme, that civil war just never ended.
Conor Fowler: I do
matty: Oh, yeah, same.
Conor Fowler: Yeah, I do.
Darren S Johnston: It just never ended.
matty: so
Conor Fowler: Well, and it was because of the softness of the Lincoln administration during Reconstruction.
matty: I mean...
Darren S Johnston: mean
matty: i
matty: Yeah. Yo. I'm from fucking Northwest Georgia. like a half hour south of the chickamauga battlefield which If anyone listening knows what that is, you know, it's a, it was a pretty fucking big battle and like.
Darren S Johnston: Mm -hmm.
matty: You know, there's i've I've heard... you know. Yeah. heritage not hate blah blah blah my entire life and i'm like you know that at a certain point You kind of have to admit that like you're just fucking gaslighting and I hate using that word but like
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: You know, you you have to admit. And and I will say... My county... voted against going or voting ah voted against the Confederacy.
Darren S Johnston: Mm.
matty: So. That made me happy. I found that out like nine months ago and I was like, cool. All right.
Darren S Johnston: now Yeah, yeah
Conor Fowler: I wonder what it looks like. I'm sure that that map exists. like
matty: Oh yeah, it definitely does.
Conor Fowler: uh Because in Baltimore, Baltimore was like. almost completely divided. between like wealthy aristocrat type people who wanted slavery to continue and like basically everybody else.
matty: Yeah. Yeah. and and And I'm not saying that, like... My home county was some bastion of, you know. civil rights or whatever, but it's always been poor.
Darren S Johnston: hey
Conor Fowler: Oh no.
matty: and it's always been like workers and you know farmers and shit like that so
Conor Fowler: Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: Right.
matty: that and And the counties around us have... significantly more well. And so they voted. for joining the Confederacy.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah. Yeah.
matty: But yeah, the civil war never ended. And and I mean,
Darren S Johnston: Yeah, it just never never ended.
Conor Fowler: and the coldt And the Cold War.
Darren S Johnston: and
matty: And the Cold War.
Conor Fowler: we got a lot of We got a lot of shit going on still.
matty: Yeah. Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah, yeah
matty: Yeah. Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: It's how to reconcile the country so we can all come together. constructively i mean
matty: Right.
Darren S Johnston: the people
Conor Fowler: Against Islam!
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: Well like what?
Shane: okay
Conor Fowler: Or like...
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: What? you know one thing
Conor Fowler: right i mean come on that's been going on for again for 20 years
Darren S Johnston: I mean...
matty: oh Yeah, longer than that, but...
Conor Fowler: And the out no, I mean, I specifically mean Islamophobia from 9 -11.
matty: Oh, yeah. Yeah.
Conor Fowler: Like.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah. 9 -11 was probably a prime example of what you're talking about, Connor.
Conor Fowler: Um.
Conor Fowler: that uh that gelling of the country, right?
Darren S Johnston: Amen. getting people together or against. Yeah.
Conor Fowler: That like... um So I don't know. I mean, I guess we can talk about. menswear, we can talk about where It is now ah in in in the shadow of Polo Fest. and um alfargos which We have all. been to except for Maddie.
matty: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: um
Shane: Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: Hmm.
matty: One day.
Conor Fowler: which is Yeah.
matty: One day I'll make an alfargas, goddammit.
Conor Fowler: one ah One of these.
Shane: You look out there.
Conor Fowler: One of these days.
matty: It looks like a good time, dude.
Shane: It is.
Darren S Johnston: yeah Yeah, it's a lot of fun.
Shane: It's a wonderful time.
matty: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: it has i mean yeah like now that it's now that it's on the pier i feel like it's like
Darren S Johnston: It's wonderful.
matty: And also on the pier and not summer, because I can't imagine how fucking hot those were.
Shane: it was hot we actually did it
Conor Fowler: It was... a
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Shane: We'll move back to them.
Conor Fowler: You know, these two these two have never complained about anything in their life.
Shane: if you need to say something.
Conor Fowler: I actually ran over Shane. in my car
Shane: Mm hmm.
Conor Fowler: And he didn't say anything.
Shane: Mm hmm. I have no legs. My legs are gone.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: right right right yeah no so they were not bitching i was bitching obviously that's like my vocation
Shane: No, when i did it and I did it back in July, it was...
Conor Fowler: Um,
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Shane: it was brutal it was hot um
matty: Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Shane: But it moved back to the Moxie in Brooklyn this past... A few weeks ago.
matty: Oh cool! Cool.
Shane: I think it's going to be there for the winter into the spring. but
matty: Nice. Is that Endor?
Conor Fowler: Well, you wouldn't want to be on the pier in the winter, right? I mean
Darren S Johnston: Oh hell no.
Shane: I wouldn't worry. uh no it's well yes it's like half indoors half outdoors
matty: Sick. Okay.
Shane: so
matty: but Wait, just out of curiosity, Shane, as a fellow... you know pop -up vendor Do you prefer an indoor an out or an outdoor market, provided the temperature is nice?
Shane: Yeah, if it's if it's you know when we did it a few weeks ago, I think it was maybe in the high 60s, so it was pretty nice.
matty: Yeah.
Shane: it was pretty and actually when i went inside to use the bathroom It was really hot in there. So...
matty: gotcha Oh, yeah, because New York loves to pump the heat when it hits like 70 degrees.
Shane: i was happy to be outside that day for sure but we've had we've had um how far it was in the past when it used to be in the east village when it was really tiny so people were outside and it was, you know, December.
matty: right right
Shane: Oh. um i'll take a night i'll take either one depending on temperature is the biggest factor i don't want to
matty: Yeah, totally. Salud.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: Yeah, I'll use it.
Conor Fowler: Well, it affects the whole thing right like if you can't wear clothes that you want to wear What's the point of being in a clothing event?
Shane: Yeah, in this past. one they did was uh the the theme was barber jackets or wax jackets or wax jackets as you know don't don't breathe
matty: No, that not at all.
Shane: So... I'm like if I'm wearing a barber, I hope I'm gonna be outside And I was, luckily, so it was it was good.
matty: Right.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: Yeah, high 60s and a barber is are pretty solid.
Shane: Yeah, it's not bad.
matty: combo.
Shane: it's not bad yeah It was really good.
matty: Yeah. Yeah. What uh, what have you guys been into as far as as the weather has turned like it's it's very comfortable in Georgia right now um,
Conor Fowler: I see the rugby.
matty: Well.
Conor Fowler: I see the tweed.
matty: Yeah, Halloween last year was 90 degrees and this year it was like 69 or 70.
Darren S Johnston: oh
matty: So.
Shane: Yeah. yeah
matty: Yeah, what about...
Darren S Johnston: Yeah
Conor Fowler: What was your costume Matt?
matty: I did not do a goddamn thing. I...
Darren S Johnston: ah
Conor Fowler: i i didn't either yeah no i didn't either
matty: my My costume!
Darren S Johnston: but
matty: Yeah, my costume was wearing a flannel shirt and a t -shirt and jeans.
Conor Fowler: I used to say that I was a grunge musician.
matty: I was. Maybe I was Garth. I don't know.
Conor Fowler: And I would dress like that.
Shane: There you go.
Conor Fowler: i'm kurt cobain it's pretty easy that's an easy that's an easy costume and you still get the candy
matty: Yeah, yeah. Oh dude. I... You know, I worked in a...
Darren S Johnston: yeah
matty: I worked at a secondhand store here from like... 20... Or sorry, 2008 to 2010. And, like, how at that point, it's now, like... It's now a better store like they they do high -end shit they do good vintage whatever Look, at that point Halloween was like our Christmas.
Darren S Johnston: Mm.
matty: And we... we either had to wear a t -shirt with the logo of the store on it And then, you know, whatever else, or we had to wear a costume. And I always put in the least amount of effort into my costumes.
matty: But just like. go to a thrift store one i went to a thrift store one day before work bought like a rayon dress and put it on with a flannel and a pair of jeans and chucks and i was like i'm kurt cobain i didn't have a wig or anything it was just like
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: Alright, this is not my shit. I didn't grow up with Halloween, so maybe that's why.
Shane: Fair.
Darren S Johnston: Right, yeah.
Shane: see you
Conor Fowler: Irish therapist.
Darren S Johnston: The same.
Conor Fowler: There are lots of good gorilla.
matty: Yeah, we
Conor Fowler: uh, costumes i mean you can do like quebecois separatists that's another good one you put on a little beret
matty: Oh yeah.
matty: What one year I like Pad. like a sweater vest a button down a pair of like stay pressed pants and wallabies And I just switched a name tag that said, I'm Fez. That's how the show fares.
Conor Fowler: Right.
Darren S Johnston: ah
matty: Good night -night. And then I used the same costume again and put I'm Rivers, like Rivers Cuomo. And.
Darren S Johnston: ah That's funny.
matty: Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: you know you Who else you could be?
matty: Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: You could be like a British Ivy enthusiast. if that
matty: Yeah, this is true. This is true
Darren S Johnston: that's that's their That's their bag. like this
matty: yeah
Conor Fowler: Shit. Shane. shane Where are you on the sleeveless cardigan?
Darren S Johnston: No shade.
Conor Fowler: Because we were close, you and I, with the sleeveless cardigan. And now it seems like... No more.
Shane: No, I love it. I wore i wore one to Al Fargo's.
matty: Okay, okay.
Conor Fowler: With the barber?
Shane: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I did an Oxford tie Sleeveless cardigan, sport jacket, barber. Yeah. I love him.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: You're just not screaming the sleeveless cardigan.
matty: No one screams their clothing as loud as you do, Connor.
Darren S Johnston: No one screamed that. They don't scream it.
Shane: Fair.
Darren S Johnston: i mean
Shane: No, I would... Look, i if I'm asked, I will...
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: I'll take the compliment
Shane: i no i think it's great i as someone who doesn't like to be warm If you want the you know the illusion of a a sweater vest without the... the the The sweat.
matty: Yeah.
Shane: It's perfect.
Conor Fowler: oh my...
matty: Yeah, totally. Salud.
Conor Fowler: God, that's what we're patenting.
Shane: It's perfect.
Conor Fowler: It's a sweater vest without the sweat.
Darren S Johnston: That's great yeah Shane, that's great.
Conor Fowler: I think that's very well done. i mean I think that's extremely well done.
Darren S Johnston: ah
Conor Fowler: That's good writing.
Shane: It's true. If you take the sport jacket off, you got this you're you're not you're good.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Shane: it's It's good. And I like how they look without a jacket, too. i like You look like you're...
matty: Yeah.
Shane: Been in the office for 12 hours.
matty: Because ah a waistcoat without a jacket kind of looks like...
Shane: it off.
matty: You know, you're trying to be Daniel Day -Lewis in fucking Gainesville, New York. Bye. A sweater vest gives you the same vibe, but...
Conor Fowler: But it's not a sweater vest.
matty: Or whatever. A cardigan vest.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: crucially.
matty: A cardigan vest.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: well because a sweater vest as we all know does not have buttons on it probably
matty: Yeah.
Shane: Yeah. Mm hmm.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: And I feel like, so we've seen Fez.
Darren S Johnston: Absolutely.
Conor Fowler: while wearing some, uh... Like a crop, super um ivory, low neck. you know what i'm talking about did you guys see this yesterday he was wearing i think that
Shane: Yeah.
matty: Oh, different fans.
Conor Fowler: uh firefighters
matty: Sorry, my brain went to the 70s show here.
Conor Fowler: Oh, no. We're talking about Fez best formerly of this show.
Darren S Johnston: Oh, fast.
matty: Right, right
Conor Fowler: Uh...
Darren S Johnston: Oh, right, right, right.
Conor Fowler: Yeah, he was wearing like a cropped, uh, Ivy colored sweater vest and like the fireman's jacket.
Darren S Johnston: Okay. Yeah, yeah. yeah
Shane: I probably will.
matty: oh true yeah i saw that
Conor Fowler: which I thought was a great.
Shane: good one
Darren S Johnston: yeah I didn't see it, but that'll work.
Conor Fowler: was a great look
Darren S Johnston: Yeah, that's great.
Conor Fowler: right because it's high low right it's like the firefighter coat you're like And then your your little midriff is revealed.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: I mean, that's good work.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah, that is good work. You also you want to bring some tension in there, man. I mean, you don't want to just wear stuff just. rotely right You want to have some personality in there a little bit. Like.
Conor Fowler: So how did you come to your outfit today? Because it is like the standard outfit, right?
Darren S Johnston: ah
Conor Fowler: But it's not.
Darren S Johnston: This is... So, yeah, I wanted to talk about that.
Shane: It's a good one.
Darren S Johnston: Right. I wanted to talk about these encoded kind of things in this whole. genre right because we' we're talking about this current state of menswear right and how You know. It can be isolating because a lot of guys or who want to be into this space really don't know.
Darren S Johnston: the sort of nuances of it so i said oh let me wear something standard and i'll discuss how what makes it unique because when you're just looking at it right you're like oh he's wearing a tie he's wearing a yellow shirt and a jacket with some A tweet jack.
Darren S Johnston: But. Once you're educated, you know this is like a Brooks Brothers jacket from like the 80s and you have... This is a six button Oxford from. God knows.
matty: Oh nice.
Darren S Johnston: Maybe the 60s. I don't even know. Right. and this is an old brooks brothers black label type also from the 60s it's these encoded things that sort of like give it it's uniqueness right so now you can fly under the radar with it right because no one's gonna Well, they will look twice as direct because you're an African -American guy wearing a tweed jacket and a tie. said you're not gonna fly that low but um
Conor Fowler: right
Darren S Johnston: But otherwise, you know it's not really something that just sort of jumps out. Right. It's these things that. the four of us know about that makes it sort of like desirable and unique.
Darren S Johnston: Right.
matty: Yeah, yeah.
Darren S Johnston: And it's kind of...
Shane: Yeah.
matty: Bleh!
Conor Fowler: If you know, you know.
Darren S Johnston: If you know, if you know, you know, right?
Conor Fowler: As they say.
Shane: No.
Darren S Johnston: but People who want to sort of get into this space, and there's not many forums anymore where there's walking you through this step -by -step now. It's just sort of assumed.
matty: Right.
Shane: Yeah. um
Darren S Johnston: that you know about it when you. sort of jump in so you can go to all fargos and feel totally out of place and not know what the hell you're looking at right and shane and i find this because i sold it the last alpha So you have guys coming.
Shane: Mm -hmm
matty: Oh shit, okay.
Darren S Johnston: yeah i was selling too so we were both there and we were selling and we got to talk a bit and
Shane: Mm -hmm.
Darren S Johnston: But. um You know, people are coming up there. They're a mix. They're either guys in the space like us who just know everything and they know what they want. And there's also guys that come to the Moxie. They don't know what the hell they're looking at.
Darren S Johnston: Right.
Shane: Yep.
Darren S Johnston: They're like totally confused. And then they're like, well. Why does this... sweater have a hole in it i said it's so epic sweater from 1969 it's a shetland it's got saddle shoulders blah blah blah it has all these things that we would look for the whole wouldn't mean nothing but for these people oh i want it to be perfect it's vintage it's not gonna
Shane: Yeah.
matty: right
Conor Fowler: Well, it's like
Shane: Yeah.
matty: right
Darren S Johnston: Yeah, so.
Conor Fowler: It's like you got another. Jacket? You got another jacket?
Darren S Johnston: See you then.
Conor Fowler: I mean, are you kidding me? like you already have 50 jackets.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: But they're all...
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: We know that they're all different, but everyone else is like, that's another fucking brown jacket, you idiot.
Shane: item
Darren S Johnston: Yeah, yeah. This is like my partner and I have this conversation all the time.
Shane: Oh yeah.
Darren S Johnston: She's like, why do you need? 20 tweets? Wow, man. I gotta look.
Conor Fowler: You got. Right.
Darren S Johnston: 20 tweets.
Conor Fowler: Right.
Darren S Johnston: at him But they're all different. You know, here's a.
Conor Fowler: but I bet not one of them looks the same.
Darren S Johnston: Well, here's a good jackpot.
Conor Fowler: Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: Right, right. So I think... I think in this space, we just need a... better dialogue about. shepherding people who are interested along and sort of educating them.
Darren S Johnston: You know, one of the things we should probably do, Shane, is just have a quick session.
matty: Totally. Totally.
Darren S Johnston: It's like, hey, you know, it's a vintage market, you know. just because it's not a flea market per se, right? It's curated.
Shane: Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: you know So hey, this is what makes it worth what we're asking you for.
Shane: We went.
Shane: When it started...
Darren S Johnston: Oh.
Shane: five years ago when when i got the cold dm from i think elias it was They advertise it as a menswear garage sale.
Conor Fowler: Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: Mmm.
Shane: And I was like, oh cool, you know, I have a ton of stuff just because it's I just did uh and i love believe me i love that it's evolved i love the the I've made so many friends through it.
Shane: It's it's it's insane.
Darren S Johnston: Mm -hmm
Shane: um but i do i actually i heard a person i think because my wife came the last time for a little bit and she said She overheard a lady go, This stuff is nice, but it's so expensive.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Shane: Now I as you guys know I really try to make things fair because As someone who... who... just loves this stuff whether it's ivy stuff clothing whatever it is If you're someone who's coming for the first time,
Shane: Maybe you saw on Instagram, you're like you're you're young, you're like, wow, I'm going to try to get into this. i want to dress like these guys i have 50 bucks.
Shane: i want I want that person to come to me and be like, oh, I have. 50 can i get like a i'm like yeah you want to tie it in an oxford like something you could put together because of the fact that
Darren S Johnston: Mm hmm. Right.
Shane: One. they get to they get to buy something. And two, They'll probably come back.
matty: See you later.
Darren S Johnston: nothing
Shane: That's the coolest part.
Conor Fowler: For sure.
Shane: I have people that I've been selling to since the maybe like the second sale. That come to me. First, which is very nice. I'll go up to everyone after but they come to me because they've known me now for years.
Shane: and i'm like oh i wear your i wore your tie i got a dm the other day from someone I sold a tie to. They're like, oh, I wear your tie. I wore the tie. that you saw me to a job interview and I felt like I was confident.
Shane: And I was like, whoa. That's cool. It's just a tie, but it's also not just a tie.
Darren S Johnston: Right.
Shane: So cool feeling But I like what Darren said about, you know. sort of educating people. that come to that want to come into this world.
Shane: because We love it so much, and I do want people to... to fall in love with it too because it is just clothing but it's It's also not.
matty: Yeah.
Shane: It brings everyone together.
Darren S Johnston: Right.
Shane: Look at us. We're here now.
matty: I have -
Darren S Johnston: Right.
matty: Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: right
Conor Fowler: It's bothersome.
matty: Like this shi - This show would not exist without what we're talking about here.
Shane: Yeah.
matty: and like
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: You know, like I learned a lot of. my knowledge on like forums and blogs and like talking to people that have been
Shane: Okay.
matty: into this shit that I'm into way longer than I have.
Shane: Oh, yeah.
matty: And it's like.
Darren S Johnston: Hmm.
matty: You know, i that's why I always, or almost always. but Sorry. Always first. uh answer any questions that somebody is like hey i found this like can you tell me what it is
Shane: Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: Mm hmm.
matty: you know, with a piece of Militaria or something. I'm like, yes.
Shane: yeah
matty: If they constantly ask me this and I can tell that they're not learning, I kind of cut that shit off. But like...
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: You know.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: like we all we've all had um Shane, you and I were, you know... Stop warping through thread forever. And like, I can't tell you the wealth of knowledge that I learned from that.
Shane: oh yeah Oh yes.
matty: And... you know, like.
Darren S Johnston: m
matty: it's not um It's not about like... trying to you know trying to gatekeep or trying to be elite but like if someone shows a gent genuine interest i'm i love talking to that person and being like
Shane: na No.
matty: oh this jacket is from you know 1966 or whatever and like that, you know
Shane: Mm hmm.
matty: If it's something... I don't really sell special shit at pop -ups, but, like, if it is something that's kind of special and, like...
Shane: Yeah.
matty: someone someone has like a visceral reaction to it. I'm so psyched.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Shane: That's why it's me selling stuff
matty: Just be.
Shane: we might maybe we'll get to selling online later but selling stuff in person
matty: Yeah.
Shane: is truly... the best part about all this because you get to
matty: Totally.
Shane: Show someone I'll have someone grab a coat off my rack and I'll be like, oh This is why... I really like this one, and I'll give them the reasons why I like it. Meanwhile, they're like, oh yeah, it's cool. I like it too.
matty: right right
Shane: but i i just have to like dump all the stuff I like about it.
Darren S Johnston: the
Shane: Just because.
matty: Yeah.
Shane: I'm enthusiastic about.
matty: And then you get those one or two people per event that are like really into what you're saying. And they're like, oh, shit.
Shane: You know.
matty: Mike.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: I just thought this was cool. I didn't know this history about it.
Darren S Johnston: Right.
matty: And it's like, yeah, that's that's like those interactions that mean the world.
Shane: Yeah.
Shane: Mm -hmm.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Shane: It's either that or they they say, oh, do you you source this stuff secondhand.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Shane: They love to hear. where something came from if i dug it out of an estate sale if i got it from a thrift you know
matty: Yeah.
Shane: And believe me, i love I love telling those stories. so
matty: Yeah, dude, I'm glad that I'm not the only one that like remembers this shit like me and my friends that I work with like
Darren S Johnston: Mm.
Shane: Oh my God.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: you know my buddy matt can tell me like oh i i was at this estate sale in God knows where Alabama and like I pulled this out of a can in the garage and I'm just like Matt
Shane: Yep.
Shane: Mm hmm.
Conor Fowler: we should have matt We should have Matt on the show.
matty: I love you today.
Conor Fowler: I mean.
matty: Uh... We should. We should.
Conor Fowler: I think like. What I was going to say a few minutes ago is that like. Clothing is a need.
Shane: Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: a
Conor Fowler: And it is never discussed as a need. And it is all of the time. ah frivolous. Or almost all the time frivolous. Especially like... from the right.
Conor Fowler: clothing is sh frivolous, even though they also wear clothing.
Darren S Johnston: Hmm.
Conor Fowler: uh So it's just like. You need to have it. Does it need to be linen? Probably not.
Darren S Johnston: Right.
Shane: No. Unnecessary.
Conor Fowler: But like that does help if it's hot, you know, like the clothing can help you out in a big way
Shane: Hey!
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: And that part of it is not discussed either, right?
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Shane: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: Like what is the value of being comfortable?
Darren S Johnston: Yeah. Yeah.
Shane: That's true.
Darren S Johnston: i mean You could also say like respectability. politics can and in Sort of like you can allude that to this Black Ivy book that came out, because that's what basically what was happening, right, is you had to.
Darren S Johnston: dress and comport yourself in a way that would be accepted by, you know, X, Y and Z. And that's why a lot of.
matty: Right.
Conor Fowler: Who was X Y & Z though? I mean, let's be clear about this
Darren S Johnston: Alright. Well, you want to say, you know, the. establishment at large, you know more or less.
Conor Fowler: The white powers that be.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah, I'm talking about talking about Miles Davis getting on stage. and 1957 or whatever and You know, he realized that his audience was primarily. all you know not primarily, but a lot a large contingent was... um you know Students.
Darren S Johnston: who dressed a certain way so what better way to associate and sell your music right because they act like it he was a stylish guy but it was also a calculated choice too right to sell to move some records also you know he's like let me dress like the kids i'm playing to till I make it more accessible.
Darren S Johnston: for them if I look a certain way.
matty: Right. yeah this is why i love accounts like black archives and i can't think of other or like I follow some photography accounts. of like, like.
Conor Fowler: we post that shit or i mean we did time was we post that shit so i feel like
matty: je Yeah. Yeah. we We need to do it more. But, like, yeah, like just seeing these historical... you know, historical fits of people and just like
Conor Fowler: Did you see that picture that I, cause like I'm never reposting shit anymore either, but I did this photo of a guy from behind. holding an American flag.
Conor Fowler: Like... in i think like kansas 1962 like a black man holding an american flag in 1962 in rural kansas like That's fucking hardcore.
matty: Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: Right
Conor Fowler: That is America right there.
matty: This is why I'm - This is why I miss, like... the blog and like tumblr days is because there was so much of that shit
Darren S Johnston: Mm hmm.
matty: That was just like. like you know i don't want to say a spank bank of like fits but like that's kind of
Conor Fowler: On erection day, that's perfectly fine.
matty: Like. ah Yeah, you know like we were we were seeing these things so consistently and like you know, we would all find cool photos that maybe we hadn't seen before and like
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: Posted to Tumblr.
Conor Fowler: Because Matt, as ever, is too... is too ah humble about this so I have in my photos uh I have the Smith collection which is like which is like 200.
Conor Fowler: They're like, each one of them is like a rare photo like they're not widely publicized and they're all Perfect.
Darren S Johnston: Mm hmm.
Conor Fowler: Like, they all convey pretty much the same thing, like kind of a fuck you. But like...
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: in many, many, many contexts.
matty: Yeah, yeah. Well, rebelsandrogues .tumblr .com slash archive.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: Go go see what... ah what was going on in in the 20 I guess 2011 to 2016 or so days.
Darren S Johnston: Okay ah look that up
matty: Yeah. But I mean, Darren, you do the same thing with like. you know. old magazines and shit like that.
Darren S Johnston: oh yeah
matty: Like that's some of my favorite stuff. And, you know, admittedly, like...
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: If you're in this world long enough, you you kind of get bored. seeing the same shit all the time but like
Darren S Johnston: mm -hmm
matty: Anytime you post like archival stuff, it's just so cool to see.
Darren S Johnston: Oh, yeah. Thanks, man. Yeah, man. and what i i try to also convey when i choose a picture i also see you know if there's any kind of tension or any kind of political you know.
Darren S Johnston: validity to what i'm looking for also right and and then sometimes it's just totally educational sort of like Backward glance look what we sort of lost kind of thing how again we used to be and it wasn't necessarily about the clothes it was more about these people and
matty: Yeah.
matty: Right. right
Darren S Johnston: them as individuals and how they made it sort of they just lived it in a sort of natural way
matty: Totally.
Darren S Johnston: You know, I think like I love like fit pics and I love seeing all that stuff. But when you're constantly doing it, if you're making that, and then no shade to anybody who's doing that, and no no disrespect.
Conor Fowler: Some shade.
Darren S Johnston: But if you're doing that all the time and you're just living to post pics of your outfits all the time Who are you really doing it for are you doing it for? the platform for for the likes or you're doing it for yourself and that's just something you should ask yourself and if it's totally for you then fine you know Post your. Post your fits away. I love to see my friends' fits, but when...
Darren S Johnston: It's just that alone all the time. um Show me your influences or talk about why that's important, why that's relevant, how it fits into your life. and you know Those type of things.
Darren S Johnston: That's that's what like the backstory, right, is what I'm saying is what makes it interesting.
matty: right
Darren S Johnston: you know.
matty: I also really love old clothing ads. Like I hate advertising.
Conor Fowler: Yeah.
Shane: you
matty: I think modern advertising is. 99 .9 % repeating absolute. Shit.
Darren S Johnston: Mm hmm.
matty: But like an old...
Conor Fowler: Or even if it's fresh, it's bullshit.
matty: Yeah, well, I mean, advertising in general is bullshit, but like an an old Norman Hilton ad or something.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: Well, but it like didn't used to be that way
matty: I see that and I'm just like... Right, right Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: Mmm.
Conor Fowler: You know, and like. i don't know and it goes of course back to Uh... Laying off creatives.
matty: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: in droves, right?
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: Like we used to have tons of creative.
matty: And also...
Conor Fowler: I was watching, I meant to bring this up and I'm so happy that I can. uh I found this Baltimore. advertising firm Parody video?
Conor Fowler: It's like... from 1992 and these guys who are admin Everyone is wearing a suit. They go into these offices where the guys are like.
Conor Fowler: with their feet up and shit like ad ages all over the desk like oh hey i didn't see you there Uh... And they're fucking talking about advertising. Like there used to be five or six ad agencies in Baltimore.
Conor Fowler: Now there are none.
matty: Right.
Darren S Johnston: oh wow
matty: i think a lot of it has to do with design like modern design too um i'm I'm not really...
Conor Fowler: Which is not odious by definition. I mean...
matty: No, but but like so I'll use the example of like vehicles cars.
Conor Fowler: Oh yeah.
matty: Trucks, etc. like i my dad's a mechanic i've been around old cars my entire fucking life i think you know there's I won't even go into like what I think is rad. but like How many times are you driving on a road now and there and this may not apply to you as much because uh, you know You're close to the...
matty: to New York city. Um, but like,
Darren S Johnston: Mm hmm.
matty: Every car looks so... monotonous. Right.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Shane: they're Kind of soulless looking.
matty: outset Like, I think...
Conor Fowler: And they're all like that greased color.
matty: Yeah. Yeah, yeah. like I'll say, like and maybe I've talked about it on here before, but like then the Ford Bronco that came out a few years ago.
Darren S Johnston: yeah
matty: like That was a cool like nod. to
Conor Fowler: At least it was something.
matty: it was It was something that harkened back a little bit, but not in that like early 2000s way where they were like making you know fucking peachy cruisers with wood panels. um but like
Darren S Johnston: No.
Conor Fowler: Which was...
Shane: and
Conor Fowler: I will go to bat for the PC Cruiser.
matty: Oh, fuck me.
Conor Fowler: There is one on my block.
matty: There.
Darren S Johnston: a
Conor Fowler: There is one on my block in, the in you know, that purple colorway.
matty: Oh my God.
matty: Yeah, they're like the worst.
Conor Fowler: It's like a dark purple.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: Yeah with the wood paneling. I mean you can't I would drive that motherfucker today for sure
matty: i
Shane: thank
matty: that They're the...
Conor Fowler: Uh, And it would be perfect with the cigarette holder.
Shane: i got it
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: Are you kidding me? I'm in a stoplight in my PT cruiser. Are you kidding me?
matty: Oh.
Darren S Johnston: oh yeah
Conor Fowler: That's amazing.
matty: oh as someone that loves swing music when that shit came out i was just like
Darren S Johnston: That would be me.
Conor Fowler: ah
matty: No, the... These cars are garbage. But, like...
Conor Fowler: so you have a So as ever, you have a principled stance against it.
Darren S Johnston: a
matty: it
matty: Okay. Of course.
Darren S Johnston: ah
Shane: people
matty: Yeah. I'm sure.
Conor Fowler: It's the swing music angle.
Darren S Johnston: no
matty: I've driven plenty of them.
Darren S Johnston: yeah
matty: They're shit cars. But, like...
Darren S Johnston: ah
Conor Fowler: Okay, well, I have not driven a PT.
matty: You know...
Conor Fowler: And what does a PT stand for?
matty: Fuck I know
Darren S Johnston: i don't know yeah what
Conor Fowler: P .T.
matty: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: Barnum and Bailey? We don't know. P .T.
matty: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: 109?
matty: Right.
Darren S Johnston: ah
matty: but like you know there's just no Like. Modern car design is so fucking boring. at this point.
Shane: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: Well, it may...
matty: and like
Conor Fowler: My only way
matty: even Even high -end shit.
Conor Fowler: Well, my limited knowledge about this is... What people say is for safety. Right?
matty: Oh, yeah.
Conor Fowler: all cars look the same because that's like the safest design.
matty: Yeah.
matty: And I get that, but like, you could...
Conor Fowler: But that can't be so. No, no, no.
matty: Well, I mean...
Conor Fowler: why does it look like that look at a fucking corvette are you kidding me they look horrible
matty: Look at...
matty: Look at an F -150. That shit ain't safe. Like, this who the hood is nine feet tall.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah. yeah Yeah. You know what, Matt? You you touched on something important, man. You know, I was watching, you know, I love like old movies and old films, right? So I'm watching this movie from the 30s. And of course, everybody's wearing hats, right? They're all wearing hats.
Darren S Johnston: Right.
matty: Right.
Darren S Johnston: but No one is wearing the hat the same way. They're all wearing a hat as an individual.
Conor Fowler: Right.
Darren S Johnston: It's not just a hat putting it on. They've like flipped the brim up or they're wearing it back. They're wearing it sideways. They're doing all of these things that sort of denote who they are as individuals. Right. And it could be construed to design now.
Darren S Johnston: Right. You're talking about how everything looks the same. Everybody dresses the same. They all wear, you know. hoodies, sweatshirts, t -shirts, even in the most formal. situations they're all wearing the same things right
Shane: No.
Darren S Johnston: Like individuality is sort of like being eroded in a way. in a way
matty: Yeah, totally, totally.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: I mean, in our lifetimes, because we're all like around the... you know. A similar age range. like
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: this is you know with like we could talk about the tech pro uniform of the past 15 years to you know, infinity and beyond. like Oh, cool. A fleece vest. like ah Peter Millar, golf polo, and like plastic pants.
matty: Cool.
Shane: Yes
matty: Great.
Conor Fowler: But it can't be. A sleeveless cardigan. right i mean they're not gonna have a like fleece uh sleeveless cargan because that's too much swagger
matty: a
Shane: No.
Darren S Johnston: ah Yeah.
matty: Uh, uh...
Shane: No, I'm not doing it.
Conor Fowler: You know what I mean?
matty: of
Conor Fowler: that's like that's like too That has too much personality.
Darren S Johnston: yeah
Conor Fowler: like People don't fuck with that.
matty: If I'm... If I'm going to be honest, a fleece sleeveless cardigan sounds like the ugliest garment. ever produced. to me.
Conor Fowler: Sounds like that could be our first. ah Branded Apocalypse Dud product.
matty: Absolutely not.
Darren S Johnston: Oh, yeah.
Shane: Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: Totally.
Shane: Get the logo embroidered, yeah.
Darren S Johnston: A heavy pile of fleece.
matty: Yeah, yeah
Darren S Johnston: But start again.
Conor Fowler: heavy oh my god oh my god and this so i was watching this woman walk across the street today And my window is down. And she came around the back of the car. and said Love the possum.
Conor Fowler: Because I have a little possum dangling from my rearview mirror.
Shane: Hey!
matty: ah
Shane: There you go.
Darren S Johnston: ah
Conor Fowler: Yeah.
matty: You didn't tell me this earlier!
Conor Fowler: That's like...
matty: Why are you -
Conor Fowler: I know it just happened to me. What I'm saying, it's like, that's the most positive response we've ever gotten.
Darren S Johnston: ah
Conor Fowler: A total stranger saying we love your logo? I mean... uh it was such a nice it was such a nice thing and i wanted to say something back to her but i was like that i don't want to do that That would be like.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: I like your parents.
matty: You can say, check out my podcast.
Conor Fowler: Right.
Shane: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: Have you heard of the Apocalypse Dads podcast?
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: Actually, ma 'am, that's the logo for my podcast.
Darren S Johnston: This.
Conor Fowler: about clothing.
Shane: She's like.
matty: Yeah.
Shane: Okay, here you go.
Conor Fowler: She would have loved it.
matty: Yeah, which is which is really never something you want to say in person.
Darren S Johnston: the fighter.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah, watch her.
Conor Fowler: Well that - I say my show.
Darren S Johnston: but Run screaming.
Conor Fowler: I don't use the P word at all. Because what do you call a group of white men talking?
Darren S Johnston: oh boy What?
Conor Fowler: A podcast.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Shane: jane it
Darren S Johnston: Oh my gosh.
matty: Oh man.
Shane: you know
matty: outta Shane, how is the website coming?
Shane: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: Yeah.
Shane: Guys. I'm going to say it right now. i don't like doing it. it's one of those things like i said before about selling in person
matty: Okay.
Shane: Everything I like about... um selling secondhand stuff. What? Online, it's it's not there.
matty: Yeah. Yeah.
Shane: It's you're not you're not with people. You are... you know, you're you're measuring, you're photographing. your shipping, it's all just very.
Conor Fowler: It sucks ass.
Shane: it does kind of suck and it's you know i have a great
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: There's no ah there's no it's being a gear you're being you're a gear now
Shane: Yeah, and like, you know, I said but a million times, I don't do this full time.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Shane: I have i have a day job. I have other responsibilities in my life like we all do. So.
Conor Fowler: Which is not like you have a fucking do nothing job either. You know what I mean?
matty: yeah
Conor Fowler: like
Shane: No, no, no, I'm always, you know, I always have this.
Conor Fowler: Your job is like serious.
Shane: Yeah, so by the time I get home and I and I just kind of want to you know not be who I then I'm like, oh, I have to measure 25 sweaters. and photograph and make sure the lighting's right, make sure there's no damages.
Shane: Did I miss a hole? Did I miss a stain?
matty: Right, right.
Darren S Johnston: Mm.
Shane: And then when I finally get them up. And I do sell some stuff, which is nice. I get, oh, I put the wrong address in. Can you make a new label for me? I need a different label. and i'm like
Conor Fowler: Yeah, dude
Shane: And all of this just to make, you know. whatever you know money is money and we all need it i get it but
Conor Fowler: Nothing.
Shane: End of the day, it's like I'm not.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Shane: I'm not My heart's not in it, and it's very, very nice that people are asking me about it and they want to purchase stuff, which is... which I think is great. but
Conor Fowler: It must be terrible. This is like the most negative I've ever heard you be about anything.
Darren S Johnston: a
Shane: I'm trying.
Conor Fowler: Ha!
Shane: I'm trying.
Conor Fowler: It must be it must be fucking ah terrible because this is like you like saying basically no is like holy shit
Shane: in it.
Shane: I'm just... I just.
Shane: No, I know
Conor Fowler: And that says how bad it is.
Shane: Yeah, well, my my my whole life I've always been, if I'm not, if my heart's not in something, I can't. Really fake it you know, when it came to playing music or a job. you know i can't pretend like i love doing something i really don't because i't
Conor Fowler: You're 100 % guy, dude.
Shane: Yeah, and I don't have to do it if I took it down tomorrow
Conor Fowler: right
Shane: it wouldn't really matter you know But I get dear.
Conor Fowler: Well so it was kind of like an experiment, right?
Shane: him Yeah, i get me I had people at All Fargo saying, you know... Anything new gonna go on the website. I want to go You're right next to me. Why don't you buy something now?
Darren S Johnston: Good.
Shane: but
matty: Right, right.
Darren S Johnston: Right.
matty: Yeah, all all of this shit is going to be in my next drop, on the or a lot of this shit.
Shane: Yes. Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah, sure.
Shane: So i have it i still I still have it up.
matty: Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: Shit.
Shane: I'm still paying for it monthly, which is stupid. um i don't know i'm thinking since the holidays are coming i might try to do one more big one and see how that goes but
matty: Right, right.
Shane: it's you know and as you guys know you know we all like to get secondhand stuff i have to go find stuff i gotta make sure i have stuff that's actually good that people want you know,
matty: Right, right.
Conor Fowler: I'm sure you, like anything, there's a learning curve, right?
matty: so Hit it.
Conor Fowler: And like you get better at it as you, it gets less odious and horrible as you go on.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Shane: yeah I mean, i think Yeah. I did eBay for a bit again i wasn't doing ebay full -time ebay is a little more straightforward once i got the shopify stuff kind of i had ah one of my best friends help me do it which is very nice of him once i got it going
matty: right
Shane: It's pretty simple, but it's just very... It's just... takes up your time.
matty: Yeah. hey Okay.
Shane: You know?
matty: So that kind of leads to a question that I just thought of with something you said.
Shane: Mm hmm.
matty: Like... um um I don't think a lot of people understand that. trying to sell a, let's say 25 to $40 item. on a website or on eBay. or whatever.
matty: Like. I've learned over the years and I've been doing this almost full time for a decade. But like... That? profit margin.
matty: Even if I get it for a dollar. like is it really worth like you have to kind of realize like a is someone going to want to spend this much money on this item Or can I just take it to a pop -up and sell it for the same price?
Shane: Well, that's it.
matty: Or...
Shane: Yeah.
matty: Do I take the... you know, 25 minutes or whatever to photograph it measure it and put it up on a website. via you know ebay or whatever it be Like, is that really worth my time?
Shane: That's the thing you have to it's it doesn't even really come down to money at the end of the day it comes down to because money you know comes and goes whatever the whole saying your time is your time you know if you want to spend an entire weekend
matty: right right
Shane: photographing and measuring. You can. but you might get everything listed and you're like oh i got 50 items ready to go and then you You hit whatever. publish and you sell two things you're like well that was a waste of the weekend
matty: Yeah, yeah.
Shane: You know?
matty: Yeah.
Shane: And it's just kind of like.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: Yeah.
Shane: and after fees and shipping and you might you know
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: And also like the gas or whatever to get. the thing and the money that i spend in on the thing like
Shane: Yeah. i mean some of them Some of the some of the thrift I hate to say it's funny to say thrift routes, but I have routes that I do
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Shane: Some of the routes I do.
matty: Yeah, don't we all?
Shane: are like 160 miles round trip. you know, so if I spend Seven hours in the car. I'm spending money on gas and a lot of iced coffee
matty: Yeah.
Shane: Um,
matty: yeah
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Shane: you know
Darren S Johnston: Ha ha.
Shane: After all that's said and done, Look the other day I went ah to the stores like I always do. And I literally came home with. Nothing. Not a tie. Zero. Nothing.
matty: Yeah. Yeah.
Shane: which happens sometimes. But you have days like that and you're like, oh, well. I don't have anything to list. I'm not gonna even bother. So it's very, very, very...
Shane: It's just not It's just not fun.
matty: Right, right.
Darren S Johnston: yeah
Shane: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: it takes a fun and it's like It takes the fun out of it.
matty: and
Conor Fowler: and that's
matty: Yeah. and i I love picking. I love like going to yard sales.
Shane: It's my favorite part.
matty: Yeah, i like that's 100%. And I think... like I can't imagine anyone that I know personally that... that sells secondhand or vintage.
matty: Like that's not their favorite part.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: but
Shane: I mean...
matty: yeah when you have like you hit seven or eight stores and you buy literally nothing
Conor Fowler: Nobody likes to. Nobody likes to... uh, ah Go back and forth with the Postal Service.
Darren S Johnston: All right.
Conor Fowler: or about the Postal Service or like...
matty: Yeah.
Shane: Luckily, yeah, luckily I have one of those thermal printers so I can i can print all my my labels at home and I just have to go home.
Conor Fowler: Yeah.
Shane: I just have to go to the post office and drive. I don't have to wait.
matty: Yeah.
Shane: I can drive it off and go.
matty: i Same.
Conor Fowler: See so you guys are at an advanced level anyway
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Shane: Which is nice.
matty: Dude, if i like if I had to wait at the post office any any time I needed to mail something, I would shoot myself straight up.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Shane: Oh my God.
matty: Like, you're behind someone.
Shane: Do it again.
matty: I saw a fucking, you know, tweet meme or whatever the other day that was like, Anytime you go to the post. post office, you're behind someone that's literally never been to a post office.
Shane: I saw it this morning.
matty: before.
Darren S Johnston: ah
matty: Ha ha!
Darren S Johnston: and
matty: cracks me up and i think there's been many versions of that but like that's so fucking true
Shane: Mm -hmm.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Shane: Yeah. Mm hmm.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah. Yeah.
Shane: and also once you say you sell a bunch of stuff and you get it out once you get it out Then you think oh, I'm good But no, they might get it and they might have an issue with it.
matty: right
Shane: oh i miss you miss there's a stain here there's a pole i'm like oh shoot you know
matty: Right.
Shane: And then. if a whole other thing they might want to return it
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: and
Shane: It's just like, holy moly.
matty: Dude, I've been selling on eBay since 2003. like not not all the time and i i think i might have two things listed right now but like
Shane: There you go.
Darren S Johnston: oh
Shane: Yeah
matty: It's such a different... Atmosphere than it once was and like even even five or six years ago like before all the dorks got involved
Shane: Sure.
matty: Like, it's it's just such a fucking headache. And.
Shane: Yeah.
matty: I don't know.
Conor Fowler: Anything that Peter Thiel touches.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: I just.
Conor Fowler: Turns to Ash.
matty: Yeah, yeah. right yeah like i used to love paypal and now i fucking despise paypal
Darren S Johnston: Yeah. yeah
Conor Fowler: So...
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: come on
Conor Fowler: Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah, Shane's being very humble, man.
matty: Ugh.
Darren S Johnston: When you're at Al Fargo's. And I don't want to like give away trade secrets, but people swarm like as soon as 11 o 'clock comes because the market starts.
matty: Oh yeah! Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: They swarm it. They swarm it. He's probably. And I'm not saying that because he's my buddy, but he probably has some of the best stuff. that's there like i bought
matty: Oh. no
Conor Fowler: And how?
matty: but
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: There's no secret to it.
matty: But...
Darren S Johnston: what
Conor Fowler: He just has the best shit.
matty: Yeah, both of...
Darren S Johnston: Two. He has the best stuff.
matty: Both of you have fucking impeccable taste.
Darren S Johnston: I mean. I bought two ties and I bought this. um a dark blue one right and I was like oh yeah you know what I was looking for a dark blue grenadine tie and he gave me a good price I won't say what it was but he got I got two uh scarves and two ties or something like that right I took the tie home and I was looked at it and I was like Holy shit, this is Ralph Lauren. purple label.
Darren S Johnston: And he gave me such a great price for it.
Shane: No?
Darren S Johnston: It's really good stuff.
Shane: Mm hmm.
Darren S Johnston: right and then i was like wow he is he's he's on top of his stuff he knows what he's doing and but you know
matty: yeah Always.
Darren S Johnston: back to what we're talking about, you got to ask yourself, if is am I going to do this where I'm just selling to this insular crowd or am I going to do now make this a business and not make it fun anymore? you know
matty: Right, right, yeah.
Shane: Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: It's probably that's...
Conor Fowler: And that's the question that we are dealing with with the show, right?
Darren S Johnston: Yes, the questions.
matty: ah
Conor Fowler: like do we do we pro Like, do we prostrate ourselves in disgusting ways to satisfy the AI algorithms?
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: Like, or do we just keep doing the shit that we're doing and, like, hope that someone will be paying attention?
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: Yeah. I'm like ah Shane you you and I come from similar backgrounds as far as like DIY music and shit like it's a lot like
Shane: here
matty: having a band, making a demo, trying to get shows. and
Shane: Oh yeah.
matty: you know, especially like. in the world that we live in. like I... Connor could... tell us how many listeners we have regularly but like We're not.
Conor Fowler: Three or four.
matty: Yeah, three or four. um like We have... as far as I know, like a pretty solid. Bates. and you know we've met a lot of friends through this like we've had you guys on a few times each and you know we we love talking to people and what we're doing but like
Shane: Mm hmm.
matty: you know, we have 1 ,300 Instagram followers after four years and sometimes it's like I don't know We always come back to the same decision, like, fuck it, we'll just keep doing what we do, and if people dig it, cool.
Shane: Do the Instagram thing as a whole other
Darren S Johnston: Right.
matty: Oh God, it's so shit.
Darren S Johnston: I hope for peace. Yeah.
matty: Like.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: and like i i'm not a videographer i i can take a a decent cat video that has like no actual good background you know of my cats but
Shane: yeah Sure.
matty: I'm not trying to like... You know. take ah Take a video and make a reel about this garment of clothing. and
Conor Fowler: It's too much work. It's too much work.
Darren S Johnston: It's...
Conor Fowler: Video is so much work and no one understands how much work it is.
matty: Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: It's so hard.
Conor Fowler: And that's what's bad about it.
matty: Right, right.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: like I make reels for our monthly market that ah myself and my friend Eleanor run.
Shane: Yep.
matty: and like
Shane: Mm hmm.
matty: you know it's it's They're not good. i'll I'll be the first to admit that. you know it's It's me trying to get as many vendors in the video as possible. but like Doing that and then editing and then putting text on it and then putting a song and making sure everything lines up correctly like
Shane: Yeah. Yeah.
matty: Fuck man.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah. Thank you.
matty: That's a job in and of itself.
Darren S Johnston: know
Shane: wow Look I have friends
Darren S Johnston: Yeah, I did I did two reels and I was like shit this is too much work
matty: yeah
Darren S Johnston: I'm gonna go back to the pictures
Shane: Yeah, I have friends who do it full time.
matty: Dude, and Personally, I like the pictures more, unless it's a cute animal.
Darren S Johnston: and
matty: I watch a cute animal video all day long.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Shane: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: Well, speaking of Fez.
matty: I'd...
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: Fez has not... Bow down. Fez only does photos. And like.
matty: True. True.
Conor Fowler: still will going up and up and up i mean so it's like it's possible to do um but it just seems like
Darren S Johnston: Mm hmm.
Conor Fowler: I don't know The.
matty: Look. I've been i've been on Instagram.
Conor Fowler: who did ralph vote for thing is doing extraordinarily well and i feel like that is the kind of thing that we need to be capturing but it's like We don't want to be trying to say stuff.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: You know what I mean? like
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: Yeah. Like so much of this show is off the cuff.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: And like, it's talking to people that we admire and like. and about shit that nobody how else actually cares about.
Shane: Nope.
matty: Right.
Darren S Johnston: Right.
matty: It's not serious. I mean it is serious, but it's not.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah. Yeah.
Conor Fowler: It's not that serious.
Darren S Johnston: what
matty: Yeah, we're not doing heart surgery or like, you know tutorial videos about that
Conor Fowler: of heart surgery, which Matt, if you want, I mean, I opened my chest to you, buddy.
Darren S Johnston: Right.
matty: Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: ah
Conor Fowler: this is like the Grinch we're trying to see if my heart is two sizes too small
Shane: All right.
Darren S Johnston: Well, one of the things I like about you guys is just Very good. grassroots like sort of You know, because when we...
Conor Fowler: Well, definitely grassroots.
Darren S Johnston: we Yeah.
Shane: Oh gosh.
Darren S Johnston: Yes. Talk to.
matty: yeah sorry shane i know you're straight edge but uh
Darren S Johnston: No. Yeah.
Shane: yeah
matty: but
Darren S Johnston: ah Yeah, you're not trying to pull a million influencers to have money.
Shane: I'm fuming.
matty: No, fuck no, dude.
Darren S Johnston: Like the same five guys you have.
matty: Yo!
Shane: That's...
matty: yoaf
Shane: part of that too
Darren S Johnston: And...
matty: i i
Darren S Johnston: And again, I don't want to not. throwing dirt at those guys, that's fine. do you but
matty: yeah Yeah, totally, totally.
Darren S Johnston: I'm just saying, I mean, how many times can you interview X, Y, and again, Matt, I'm going to use that because I don't want to put names out there, but X, Y, and Z.
matty: Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: jim
matty: That'll do it.
Shane: I agree.
matty: Tell me.
Darren S Johnston: We've heard those those stories already. We already know that. that
Shane: Mm -hmm
matty: Right, right.
Darren S Johnston: Thank you.
matty: Uh...
Shane: it's It's such a...
Darren S Johnston: So.
matty: Something... Okay, sorry.
Darren S Johnston: Something new.
matty: is something
Shane: No, no.
Conor Fowler: have you guys heard of the ro have Have you guys heard of the Ralph
matty: All right.
Darren S Johnston: but
matty: ha
Shane: We don't have enough time to talk about that.
Darren S Johnston: Oh my gosh.
Shane: Oh my God.
Conor Fowler: Yeah.
matty: Uh, I...
Darren S Johnston: i
matty: I do want to say a funny anecdote in a second, but Shane, go ahead and say what your thought was.
Shane: No, it's just think about the whole you know, Instagram thing and how how you know, I We might know the same people that do this stuff, but I have friends who who do Instagram. and social media full time with menswear.
Shane: And. As much as we're making fun of it, which it is kind of silly. It's a ton of work.
matty: Oh, yes.
Shane: And you.
matty: So much work.
Shane: It's a lot of work for for maybe no reward sometimes.
matty: Mhm.
Shane: And it's it's a very, very hard thing. again you might be in a very privileged spot where you can maybe get to the point where you can maybe quit your job and do this full time if you're lucky enough.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Shane: But once you hit that level. You have to, it's like 24 -7.
Conor Fowler: You got to grind all the time.
matty: Yeah. Yeah. Ciaolo!
Shane: you know you everything your entire life is you need and i see it at alfargos i see it at other menswear things i go to when i have the time
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Shane: Everyone is. is there but they're all like waiting for the perfect moment to film something or take a photo
Conor Fowler: Right.
matty: right right
Darren S Johnston: Mm hmm.
Shane: And you missed. You miss these human moments because you're busy trying to make them real. Like.
matty: Right.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Shane: likell I'll do El Fargo's. I'll be... i'll be up at 5 a .m i'm driving in i'm parking i'm doing all this stuff just to sell some stuff I get home, I'm like, I didn't take one picture.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Shane: didn't I didn't take a photo or a video of the entire day because I was just busy trying to be present. with the people
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: Toodaloo
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Shane: But meanwhile, they got next to me. No one in particular. is as their tripod, they're like... doing takes of videos and I'm like
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Shane: What are we doing?
matty: Yeah, yeah.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Shane: Okay.
matty: if If that's what it takes to succeed, like I'm cool where I'm at.
Shane: I don't have it in me.
matty: at this point
Shane: I don't have it any.
matty: No, no, same.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: Like I love, if I go to a show of a band that I really love. I love taking videos because I go back and rewatch them.
Shane: Sure.
Darren S Johnston: Mm hmm.
matty: And like. you know, people complain about phones at shows like Phoebe Bridgers just did the tour where like they were, you know, there were no phones, but like.
Shane: Lock them up, yeah.
matty: I saw an incarnation of my favorite man of all time last year. And I took. probably 10 or 12 videos, and I'd go back and watch those at least once a week.
Shane: Yeah.
Darren S Johnston: Mm.
Shane: Sure.
matty: Just because it it reminds me of the feeling and like
Shane: that's Very different.
Shane: Mm hmm.
matty: You know, you can hear my my Fucking. Off -key voice. Maybe an not. I don't know.
Shane: yeah
matty: You can hear my voice in these, and I'm just like, like you can hear the rest of the crowd in these. like
Darren S Johnston: the
matty: Doing that for... a market. Just does not have the same appeal to me.
Shane: Yeah. Look, if you're running the market and it's your thing, okay.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Shane: But if you're a vendor, like just just be a vendor.
matty: Yeah.
Shane: I get you want you want the content.
matty: Totally, totally.
Shane: Maybe your Instagram is your livelihood or your social media is your livelihood.
matty: Right.
Shane: maybe in that regard but for me it's not i post like twice a week maybe And end. Look I've been to the point where I'm like should I? Try to do a post a day.
Conor Fowler: okay
Shane: Should I try to do a story a day? And I just. Don't. It's just not
Darren S Johnston: Mhm.
Shane: You know?
matty: You know, the the only good views that I ever get, and I have like... 7 ,500 followers or something. um The only things that I ever get views on are my stories.
matty: are... political shit that I read. Like last night at 3 a .m. when I was just like... refreshing the, you know. the midterm results. And I was just like,
Shane: mean
matty: Okay, I got some thoughts on this. I'm going to jot them down, and I think, like... last i checked a few hours ago like i've gotten like almost 800 views on a couple of them And it's like, cool. that like i'm glad it resonates with people i
Shane: you
matty: I enjoy doing that kind of shit, but like... you know, a piece of clothing or a reel about clothing or whatever just doesn't generate. what it What? I would expect it to, and like...
Shane: Thanks.
matty: It's a little disheartening
Shane: That's it. That's the funny part.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
Shane: I'll post you know either It's either just stuff I find in out thrifting or outfits and every every once in a while to me on the bike. but Sometimes I'll get a post that gets 12 I have a post from a year ago or so that has over a hundred thousand views It's just a coat.
Shane: But then I'll post the code again and it gets like 5 ,000. So there's no there's no.
matty: No.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah, there's no rhyme or reason to it sometimes.
Shane: Right or reason?
matty: Right.
Shane: All right.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: Right. I will say
Shane: You know?
matty: I think I've made it because I got... I've gotten two email emails from Timu. In the past sh - two weeks asking about doing a collaboration and
Shane: Nice! if
matty: Each time, it's cracked me the fuck up.
Conor Fowler: you heard it here boy um um um ah Rebels Reds! This is Teemo.
matty: It's such a
Conor Fowler: Cool.
matty: Shane, I'm sure...
Conor Fowler: We're making clocks.
matty: Shame. i'm I'm sure you've gotten some of these like from various companies, but it's always such a funny thing because you can tell it's just a standardized email and they're like.
Shane: Amen.
matty: we We would love... and you know, whatever X. a
Shane: Oh yeah.
matty: you know x collab with y or with rebels rogues and i'm just like
Shane: Mm -hmm.
matty: Guys, does this work on fucking anyone, really?
Shane: You only... The only real one I've ever gotten was.
Conor Fowler: Rebels Rose Crocs is already happening.
Shane: print
Conor Fowler: I mean...
Shane: Oh.
matty: Hey.
Conor Fowler: The momentum behind this, the momentum behind this collab, I mean...
matty: You know how much
matty: Ugh.
Conor Fowler: Shane is going to get steamrolled again.
Shane: It's alright.
matty: yeah
Darren S Johnston: yeah
Shane: Right, we're all friends.
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: ah Yeah.
Shane: yeah only The only real one I ever got was, and it's funny because I had a menswear friend who you guys.
Conor Fowler: We're all friends.
Shane: Definitely no. kind of you know poke fun about it but when i i did some stuff with proper cloth like we all do
matty: Right, right.
Darren S Johnston: Mm.
Shane: And I had a...
matty: Not me. Not me.
Shane: Not yet. Well, it's funny because I got the message and I said to myself, i made a joke to myself i'm like oh i I think I made it. I got the proper cloth email and look. Wonderful people.
Shane: Dave.
matty: Yeah, yeah, totally.
Shane: and I genuinely love their stuff. It's awesome. like Everything you can get made, it's wonderful. but it is funny like i don't know if you guys follow it closely enough but everyone in the mentor world right now is all dropping their J .Crew.
Shane: host at the same time. And it's become.
matty: Yeah.
Shane: sort of like a funny thing in this world where Tuesday morning. Everyone who's a J. Crew partner. put up their post about the roll neck sweater like at the same time
Darren S Johnston: Hmm.
Shane: And if you follow these people, you can see it like one by one. There's so -and -so with a sweater, so -and -so with a sweater. It's very... It's funny in a way, but it's also like a... kind of strange how Look, if Jay k Crew called me, I would pick up.
Darren S Johnston: Mm hmm.
Shane: We all like...
Conor Fowler: That's the title of the episode, everyone.
Shane: We all like J .Crew. You know, don't we all like it? But it is a little silly when you see the same. 25 people posting about the same exact product.
Darren S Johnston: Right.
Shane: Like you said before it's it's it's X Y & Z people like on the podcasts Not you guys, but... Other men's were adjacent podcasts who had the same. dozen people. Meanwhile, there's a hundred other people in this space, men and women.
Shane: who who are interesting. that they don't reach out to because they don't have followers, they don't have a following. So we're gonna skip over and go back to the same person again
Darren S Johnston: Yeah.
matty: right
Shane: it's like
Conor Fowler: That's who we're looking for, people with no followers. Uh...
Darren S Johnston: Yeah, there you go.
matty: Yeah, cool cool people that that just...
Darren S Johnston: He got me. Cool people, no followers. Well, no, I do.
matty: Yeah.
Conor Fowler: Well, because I was talking to Blazers and button downs and he was like. how do you guys get all these guests and i was like Well, we ask them
matty: yeah
Conor Fowler: And I don't think anyone has ever said no. But him.
matty: Right, right. now ah
Conor Fowler: He did say no out of his own bizarre sort of Smithian pride.
matty: A couple of people have also said...
Conor Fowler: ah But we will get him back.
Darren S Johnston: Uh huh.
matty: A couple of people have said no because they don't like how they sound, which I think is absurd, because my, like...
Darren S Johnston: Hmm.
matty: dude i've said it before i'll say it again i think i've maybe listened to three episodes that we've ever done Because I don't want to hear myself talk. I don't want to hear myself talk in real life.
Shane: Yeah.
matty: Right.
Darren S Johnston: Yes.

Shane: Yes.
matty: uh,
Conor Fowler: Of course.
