Introduction and Match Preview

Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Liverpool Podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. I'm your host, Jesse Sawa. It's the Friday forecast show and it's the return of the Premier League. So today today we'll be looking ahead to this Sunday's 2pm UK kickoff. That's 9am Eastern Standard Time as Liverpool are the visitors at Southampton. Joining me to discuss the game is Connor Norcott. How's it going, Connor? How was the international break for you?
00:00:40
Connor
It felt like a break that I've had for myself. I've not really consumed any football that isn't on social media, isn't like little one minute clips on, on Twitter or blue sky or Instagram or wherever you get your socials.
00:00:53
Connor
it's been pretty chill for me. I've just kind of been enjoying it, but I am so desperately looking forward to the Premier League coming back. I can't wait. it I'm really excited to talk about this game, but I, you know, at typical fashion, I'm nervous.
00:01:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely.
00:01:04
Connor
I'm nervous. How are you feeling?
00:01:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
like Yeah, you're always nervous. And, you know, you said chilled. It has been very cold lot today so was the that was the right word to use.
00:01:13
Connor
Very true.

Game Analysis and Strategies

00:01:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, so in part one of today's episode, we'll be looking ahead to the game against Southampton, talk about the form guides for both teams and the kind of game that Liverpool should be expecting.
00:01:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Part two, we'll do our predicted lineups and a score prediction. And in part three, we'll round off the episode. with some of the transfer news and contract updates during the rounds.
00:01:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, so Southampton are up next, Connor. We're in a good position. Five points clear of second place Manchester City. Southampton are rock bottom at the Premier League picking up just four points in 11 games. It's one of those fixtures though, isn't it? I mean, it should be a routine three points, but it's straight after the international break. So is this is there a potential for this being a banana skin for Liverpool?
00:02:06
Connor
I think as Liverpool fans we're kind of programmed to fear the post-interational post-international break fixture. Although I'm pretty sure our results recently, in a I think there's there was a status all the other day, in the last 15 Liverpool have maybe lost one or something. I can't remember of the post-international games. And like you said, Southampton are bottom. they're not you know They're not exactly flying. They've got quite a few players I like.
00:02:32
Connor
I, for some reason, I like Russell Martin too. I think he's he's an interesting coach. They did really well in the championship last year too. It should be routine for us, but you know, you know me, you know me. I can find the whatever the opposite of a silver lining is. I can find the misery somewhere. I am nervous. I really am, but.
00:02:51
Connor
But what I think what adds to it as well, and I i know we'll talk about some of the our title rivals later on, what adds to it is that we're the last game this weekend. And I think obviously the players, they can handle the pressure.
00:03:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:03:03
Connor
Can I? I don't know. I don't know. how i I feel like it's one of those games that I expect Liverpool to win, but You know, Southampton, even against City, everyone was back in Holland to score hat-tricks on hat-tricks.
00:03:15
Connor
Everyone triple captained him. I triple captained him. He scored one goal in the fifth minute and they eked out a win. So, so I think Liverpool, they'll have to be on their A game to get a good result here, I think.
00:03:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:03:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's a good point, actually, because Southampton were actually quite unlucky in that game.
00:03:30
Connor
Yeah.
00:03:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
They could have got something out of that game if they'd taken their chances, which is always kind of and that's what you get with the, you know, the bottom third teams. Here's the reason why they're there is sometimes they play very, very good football.
00:03:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
but they just can't finish off their chances that come their way.
00:03:47
Connor
Hmm.
00:03:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
But so you know in 118 meetings between these two teams, Liverpool have racked up 62 wins. The Saints with 31 wins and 26 draws.
00:04:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
But the recent form guide is that should give us confidence and cause for real worry in the Southampton camp. Liverpool have won 15 of their 17 games played in all competitions this season.
00:04:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Still only one defeat in the Premier League this season, that was at home to Forrest. And our away form reads, played four played five, won four, no losses, and just the one draw away at the Emirates against Arsenal.
00:04:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
its As you said, it should be you know a routine win for us, but I i guess it's the context in in which we enter this game. We'll talk the predicted lineups in more detail later on later on in the pod, but how do you think Slots are going to approach

Prioritizing Competitions

00:04:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
this game? Because it's a massive, massive week coming up. Two home fixtures,
00:04:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
but Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday night. And then it's Man City of the Visitors in the Premier League the following Sunday, that's December 1st, which is going to have a huge impact on the title race this season. So how does slot approach this game, which on paper is the easier of the three fixtures in this round of games, but we have to go into that city game protecting that five point lead corner.
00:05:17
Connor
Yeah exactly and i think I think that's all that matters really. There's so much I want to talk about here because I think there's so many permutations in where the important fixtures lie but at the minute where Liverpool are and where they are in the Champions League too I would absolutely be prioritising the Premier League games. So this Southampton game is massive because like you said you need to protect that five-point gap I think statistics, if you look at it statistically, Liverpool I think needs to average 15 points to get through in the Champions League into the without going through the playoffs.
00:05:51
Connor
They're already on 12. There's four games left, I think maybe fought four games left. So it looks like you know one way, not a four.
00:05:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Pretty much there, right?
00:05:59
Connor
If that's We're pretty much there, prioritise the Premier League because that five point gap is so essential. I think Slott will do what he normally does and that is his idea of rotation, his change in one of the left wingers and maybe a full back.
00:06:13
Connor
So I think you'll you'll see a pretty strong line up. There are a few question marks I have about, you know, potential return in players, people coming back from internationals or injuries, especially in goalkeeper.
00:06:23
Connor
I think that'll be interesting to talk about. But it's just so important we win. And I think what's kept Liverpool? and what what What makes us look a lot more controlled is the fact that we're able to keep teams at the end of our at the end of our job.
00:06:36
Connor
And that defence is so important.
00:06:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:06:37
Connor
So I think, you know, it's going to be one of those games that even if it isn't fluid Liverpool need to be solid in defence for the game to to really go in their favour. So I think what we've come to see as a typical RNA slot game is what we'll expect. It'll be controlled. It won't be cagey, but it'll be, you know, Southampton might have chances, but hopefully our defence can muster out the worst of them.
00:07:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I agree. I think Slott will play a strong team, but I think really looking for the midfield to dominate this game. dominate possession so that the players can you know they can effectively rest on the ball.
00:07:17
Connor
Mm hmm.
00:07:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know if He'll want the strikers to be clinical, get get one, get a second so that we can kill the game and expend as little energy as possible because you know there are much, much bigger fish to fry.
00:07:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
You've mentioned the Real Madrid game and priority priority prioritizing the Premier League, which I 100% agree with. But i I just think that beating Real Madrid or or not losing against them and and really having a good performance against them just kind of builds and continues that momentum and confidence going into let's yeah let's say the City game on the weekend.
00:07:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
If we beat Real Madrid midweek, you know, what what a confidence boost that will be for the weekend.
00:07:55
Connor
Yeah.
00:08:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
But where do you you know, we mentioned City. Where do you stand on this city's so-called slump? I mean, everyone is losing their minds over city losing four games on the bounce, but it's spread across three competitions, right? So for me, I don't even count the Carabao Cup defeat.

Rival Teams and Fixture Importance

00:08:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah know, they, they, they got knocked out of that one champions league game. Okay. I'm not, so I'm not saying that they, I wasn't a concern for them or they didn't want to win, but it's a group game. They're going to qualify. I don't think there's going any doubt about that. The two premier league games were a surprise, but by no means are they out of the title race or that we're favorites.
00:08:42
Connor
Yeah, I agree. It's funny. I don't know if you saw that Opta had written Liverpool having a 61% chance of winning the Premier League and City had a 30% chance.
00:08:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. This makes sense.
00:08:53
Connor
Find me any Liverpool fan who feels that way. If you flip the coin, you know, two times out of three, Liverpool are going to win.
00:08:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:08:59
Connor
I don't believe that. I really don't. Listen, We've all been hurt by City before, Liverpool fans, so I refuse to rule them out ever, really. Even in that year that we stormed the league, it wasn't really over until we beat Man United at Anfield.
00:09:14
Connor
And then then I felt secure, you know.
00:09:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:09:16
Connor
That was the game that solidified it for me.
00:09:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:09:19
Connor
Yeah, City are kind of baffling me a bit because they are almost like completely anathema to what you expect a Pep Guardiola team to be, which is a team, like a cohesive unit, a machine almost. And they kind of play, they might still play that way, but they seem more reliant on moments of brilliance from individual players, which isn't how they play. And it feels like that kind of, I don't know, there is like a kind of tension in in every game they play because it's which side wins over. Is it the team that wants to rely on those individual moments or is it the team that
00:09:53
Connor
has the you know a plan and a tried method that they can execute every single time. At the minute, it doesn't look like they can do that. And I think that's what differentiates Liverpool and City at the minute is going into games.
00:10:03
Connor
Liverpool know what they need to execute, but they're able to do it too. And they aren't relaxed. We have players who can give you moments, but that's not how we win our games.
00:10:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:10:11
Connor
And it feels like that's how City are winning at the minute. which is all well and good in the title race, but when it comes to, that when it's November, I'm not too sure if that's the best, you know, best port of call. It's going to be interesting. And I think this whole, this these next three fixtures are its just so massive. Slots mentioned before about momentum and how important rhythm is. And Swythampton is like, okay, we've had the international break.
00:10:35
Connor
We've experienced what it's like to lose after an international break. We now know what it's like to win after an international break. We know how to keep that rhythm and build that momentum again. So we need to we need to win on Sunday.
00:10:46
Connor
It's massive. it's You can't afford to drop points ever, especially against a team like Southampton. Disrespect meant, because I think they're rubbish. But you know yeah.
00:10:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah hundred percent
00:10:55
Connor
But we'll see.
00:10:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:10:56
Connor
We'll see. We'll see. Because I'm sure there'll be moments, and I'm sure they'll have chances. And they've got a few players that I really like the look of. so
00:11:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm just wondering about City, if that team is beginning to age, likes of Walker, De Bruyne, Gundagand has come back in, not quite the same player, maybe Bernardo Silva. We had to Jack from the Daily Man City podcast on the show last week,
00:11:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, you know, very surprisingly for for a Man City fan, he suggested that City need to bring two or three players in January. Otherwise, he doesn't think they're equipped to challenge this season. You know, let's throw some money, more money at it.
00:11:36
Connor
hey if isn't broke don't fix it you know
00:11:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
said oh Yeah, exactly. But Guardiola's just signed a new contract extension. You know, it's it's probably the lift that they need.
00:11:45
Connor
Yeah and I think I think i've I've mentioned before that like the best players and the best managers understand how they can affect games and affect situations even if it's off the pitch and I think just the idea of Guardiola committing to this project for another year kind of bolsters that again and they've got a massive game on the weekend too and against Tottenham who are
00:12:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:12:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Spurs.
00:12:08
Connor
They're kind of, say it's they're kind of their bogey team, they kind of are.
00:12:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's one of their bogey teams.
00:12:12
Connor
and Although they look a very light in defence at the minute and defensively they're not great anyway. So so I don't expect, I expect City to win that pretty comfortably actually. But yeah, I think it's going to be interesting.
00:12:24
Connor
But this the game at Anfield, that clash between the two is just going to be, it's going to be It's actually going to be, like I'm dreading watching it already because, you know, watching it behind my cushion, yeah.
00:12:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
onedi men so I know it's just one of those. Absolutely, absolutely. Okay, let's go to a very quick break and we'll return after this very brief message.
00:13:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
OK, welcome

Player Performances and Squad Updates

00:13:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
back. Let's get into some predicted lineups and a score prediction. Conor, the team is in good form. A lot of our players have done well on international duty. Curtis Jones scores for England. Conor Bradley scored for Northern Ireland.
00:13:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Andy Robertson scored for Scotland, Sir Bosleye, Gagpo, they're all getting onto the score sheet. So plenty of competition for players. In addition, we've got players possibly returning from injury, maybe not quite ready for the south and Southampton game. Alison Jota, Harvey Elliott, possibly back in full training in the next week or so. let's start with the back five. Van Dijk did withdraw from the Dutch squad.
00:14:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
for their second game on, quote, medical grounds. Hopefully that's precautionary, although Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman was quoted as saying that van Dyck had some minor complaints he already had and he trained separately.
00:14:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
So it suggests that he may be carrying a knock. So, you know, maybe another player that slot has to manage carefully with, you know, really big big games on the horizon. And then obviously Trent looks a doubt enjoying the England squad. I'd be surprised if slot risks him for this game, especially since we've got such an able replacement in Connor Bradley. so So what are you looking at in terms of the back five?
00:14:41
Connor
Uh, already I'm, I'm, I'm so confused because I think we keep talking about momentum, at least I do and rhythm and, and getting up to speed and keeping that machine ticking over. Do you play Alison? Do you play Kelleher? Cause is Alison going to play against Real Madrid midweek? Probably if he's fit.
00:14:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think he sticks with Keleher for now.
00:15:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think he sticks with Keleher for now.
00:15:01
Connor
But Kelleher has been phenomenal.
00:15:02
Connor
So Kelleher plays.
00:15:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
He has been for now, yeah.
00:15:05
Connor
and And you know what, if if if anyone's been disrespected, I think by Liverpool a little bit, you could argue it's Kelleher. So he deserves some minutes. He does, he does.
00:15:15
Connor
I know Alison's the guy, but he deserves a minute.
00:15:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
I get what you mean. Yeah.
00:15:18
Connor
So I'd like to see Kelleher play. I've gone for Robertson.
00:15:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think...
00:15:22
Connor
Oh, sorry, go to ahead.
00:15:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, no, you go ahead, go, go.
00:15:25
Connor
Okay.
00:15:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, i've I've gone to Robertson as well.
00:15:27
Connor
Yeah. Robertson, Van Dyke, Conaté. And I went for Joe Gomez.
00:15:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Did you?
00:15:31
Connor
I don't know why. I wrote it down and it's still there. Bradley's it with a question mark beside it, but I've gone for Joe Gomez.
00:15:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
You're pulling up the heartstrings with the Gomez pick there.
00:15:41
Connor
I think it's it's mainly because if Trent isn't goingnna isn't fit to play against Real Madrid, or if if that's his first game back against Vinicius Jr. or against Mbappe, you're feeding him to the Lions there.
00:15:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:15:54
Connor
And Vinicius Jr. has had his number before. So Gomez could be interested in there, but I just thought, you know what, let's give him some minutes. Let's put him in and see what happens.
00:16:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
through some minutes yeah agree.
00:16:03
Connor
so ah
00:16:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
i think I think Robertson is kind of, he's almost for forcing himself back as the number one but left bank in the last few weeks with his performances.
00:16:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
And obviously his goal with Scotland is not going to do him any harm. Van Dyke, cannae I think Gomez is a good shout. I'm almost thinking that it may be the other way around that he he starts with Bradley against Southampton and maybe then gives Bradley the rest that he needs because he's he's been on international duty and then played Gomez against finishes on Wednesday night.
00:16:31
Connor
Mm hmm.
00:16:42
Connor
Hmm. Yeah. Yeah.
00:16:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
So at least he's got some options. I'm also thinking with Kelleher, Do you not think that it would, do you say that he's disrespected because obviously, you know, he does, he, you know, Alison obviously is the number one and, and he, he will play the games.
00:16:59
Connor
Yeah.
00:17:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I'm just thinking if Kelleher plays against Southampton. I think then he has to play against Real Madrid and Man City because you can't throw Alisson the first game back in either Champions League against Real Madrid or Manchester City.
00:17:10
Connor
Completely.
00:17:13
Connor
Yeah.
00:17:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
That can't be your first game back. And so would he would he then be better off starting Alisson against Southampton to get him up to speed for the Man City game?
00:17:20
Connor
But
00:17:29
Connor
This is what I'm thinking because I think so. And even if you look after the Man City game, I think it goes City, Newcastle midweek and then Everton, or maybe it's back to, but I can't remember which way it is.
00:17:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
evidence Yeah.
00:17:39
Connor
So where where where's the respite here? I mean, this is the 12 game stretch that Liverpool said, that we all said that was going to be tough for us. We're in the kind of the last third of it now. So I don't know.
00:17:51
Connor
i i i would If Alice is fit to play, I'd want to play him because, like you said, Momentum and his first game can't be Real Madrid. It can't be Man City. It could be Newcastle.
00:18:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
copy be set Yeah.
00:18:02
Connor
It shouldn't be Everton. So, you know, you know, yeah, we'll see.
00:18:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
say But at least he's got a slot cut slot in there.
00:18:07
Connor
We'll see. i think I think doing this before a bit of inside baseball here, recording this the day before Arnis Lutz press conference on Friday feels a little bit like shit. So, well you know, there's going to be things we're going to miss out on here, but yeah.
00:18:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Come on, mate. People are thinking that this is recorded on Friday, because it's Friday forecast.
00:18:26
Connor
Oh, sorry. Yeah. Sorry. Sorry. Sorry.
00:18:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's destroying the magic here.
00:18:28
Connor
Sorry.
00:18:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
And what what about for midfield then? Because for me, the big concern now is I've gone for Gravenberg. I've gone for Jones and Sir Bosley, with Jones partnering Gravenberg to to give McAllister a bit of a rest.
00:18:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's obviously he's had an international flight from this from South America. But then Gravenberg played twice for the Netherlands as well. And he's just playing every single game.
00:18:58
Connor
Yeah.
00:19:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Endo?
00:19:06
Connor
I think
00:19:08
Connor
I think maybe, if yeah if if this wasn't straight after an international break, I think the chances of Endo playing are pretty high.
00:19:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know.
00:19:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:16
Connor
You could even see him get some minutes, because I think his minutes have increased off the bench recently when he has came off.
00:19:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:23
Connor
But for me, I had the exact same midfield three. I think it makes total sense. Jones and Graven broke together in that double pivot.
00:19:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:30
Connor
So Bosley supporting the striker in the press, all that. It's all, again, rhythm and momentum, and it's all natural now. That's the way that that midfield plays. But i I did think, you know, we keep resting McAllister, but we're in his grab and bucket and his time, you know, because God bless him, that man's been putting some minutes in.
00:19:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
in a full-on debut game, isn't he?
00:19:51
Connor
Yeah, yeah.
00:19:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
And what about up top then? I've gone for Salah, Nunes and Gackpo.
00:20:00
Connor
Yeah.
00:20:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because again, i'm I'm just looking at the South American link there with Diaz. I'm not sure that Slott wants to play to South Americans in his forward line, who have been traveling, you know, such long distances.
00:20:17
Connor
Yeah.
00:20:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I think Gackpo might get the nod on the left, left hand side and and Nunes up top.
00:20:22
Connor
I've gone with the same thing. Although I think again, I keep thinking about the fixtures to come. And I keep thinking who's going to play against Real Madrid, because, you know, their back line again defensively, they've got quite a few big, big injuries, like season ended injuries.
00:20:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:20:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:20:37
Connor
So you should be interested. I've gone for the same front three. I think mostly same reason. And again, with with you kind of want to keep the South Americans fit and fresh and And I think Nuna has only played 45 minutes in in Uruguay's game against Brazil, so yeah.
00:20:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:20:54
Connor
Plus I just love him, so I wanted to see him play and score, and you know, he smoke he's my guy.
00:21:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
All right, give us a score prediction, then I'm going to go 3-0 away win.
00:21:05
Connor
I'm gonna go for a very comfortable 2-0.
00:21:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'll take that.
00:21:09
Connor
Yeah, yeah.
00:21:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'll take a 1-0. Anything for three points.
00:21:13
Connor
Yeah.
00:21:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
OK, time for a very another quick message, and we'll be back shortly after this.

Transfer Rumors and Speculations

00:21:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, let's round off this episode with some contract updates and transfer speculation. Lots of reports linking Egyptian forward Omar Marmouche with the Reds. The Eintracht Frankfurt number nine has scored 31 goals, laid on 16 assists in 57 games the Bundesliga team. He's quick, he scores goals, he's Egyptian. Sign him up surely, Connor.
00:22:23
Connor
Yeah, I think it was one of those that as soon as you started playing well, you just knew he would be linked with us for two reasons. One, that you know the the Egyptian wide forward who scores goals like crazy, we've seen that before. And secondly, that it's a a kind of hipster, Bundesliga, cheapish sign-in that Liverpool could make. That's very Michael Edwards, you know. I know he's not the sporting director anymore, but that's very, very Michael Edwards. Yeah, I think he looks great, but I have some questions about it. First of all, we already have six attackers. I know Kiesa isn't really playing at the minute. By all accounts, he's going through his own middle pre-season at the moment.
00:23:01
Connor
Which is good because I think few players that have come in the door at Liverpool have looked as excited to play for Liverpool as he has. So even though he's only had a combined what, maybe 100 minutes?
00:23:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:13
Connor
I don't know. i I want the best for him. I really wanted to stick around and I hope he doesn't leave and on ah ah on on a loan like people keep talking about in January. I don't think that will happen. and um But if Omar Marmouche comes in, then where where does he get his minutes? Does that mean somebody's leaving? Maybe another Egyptian wide forward who scores a lot of goals? If it's a choice between the two, you know, I know who I'm sticking with. But but yeah, what I don't know. Have you seen much of him? Is he a player you've seen? or
00:23:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, um not not too much. Obviously, I think, you know, we've we've all seen the kind of YouTube but youtube clips and I mean, he's 25 years old. I think it was a similar to Salah's age when we signed him from Roma.
00:23:52
Connor
Mm hmm.
00:23:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think he's more of a central number nine than an out and out wide forward. You can play in those positions. But I think where he would fit in, and I think this is is something that would be a worry for Nunes and his fans, is that yeah I think if Liverpool were to get him,
00:24:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think it would be at the expense of Salah. I think it will be in addition to Salah and that is that Marmush plays centrally as the number nine and I think that would mean either
00:24:25
Connor
Yeah.
00:24:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Chiesa goes and Nunez then competes for that left wing spot with Diaz. Because I don't think Liverpool would get rid of Jota. I think he's just too good a goal scorer. So yeah, I think it would be in addition to Salah. And interestingly, Salah, he was speaking at a book fair in the UAE. And he's urged people to stop comparing Marmouche with him.
00:25:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm saying that look you know the guy's young he doesn't need the added pressure of constantly being compared to him. But you know I suppose it's inevitable isn't it you know especially if he signs for us then you know the the comparisons. Are you know are going to be there.
00:25:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
But so I do think that he'd be a good signing for us and I think that Liverpool would be able to get him at a reasonable price.
00:25:27
Connor
Yeah.
00:25:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Another player being linked, 21 years old, Ryan Shirky of Olympic Leonaise. I've got to say, I would love him at Liverpool.
00:25:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's got, he's got a bit of catenio about him, really skillful.
00:25:42
Connor
Yeah.
00:25:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
He can play in any of those kinds of forward positions, but also, but more, more likely like a number 10 as an attacking midfielder and Leon have been hit with a a fine and a provisional relegation because of financial fair play breaches.
00:25:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
So they may have to sell in, in January, maybe Leon should join the premier league because you know, they can get away with anything here then. um But I would love to have him. I'd love to have him at Liverpool. And apparently, if we do sign him in January, we could get him for as little as like 15 million.
00:26:17
Connor
It looks like the kind of player that if we were linked to him under clop, I'd say there's no way we sign him because he isn't that kind of like dogged, raw athlete that can be developed and you can you can kind of grow the technical side of his game. He is all technique. And as someone who hasn't watched a lot of Olympic DNA but has played a lot of football manager, which I talk about all the time, he is no joke. He is the guy. So I would love to see him Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:26:44
Connor
i would I would love to see him join Liverpool only because of what he's done for my Schalke side in Football Manager 2022. I love them very much. ah ah But yeah, I don't know.
00:26:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
of that.
00:26:53
Connor
He looked he looks like a player that that just kind of has everything technically and those players kind of worry me sometimes because
00:26:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:27:02
Connor
You might not, you know, obviously I don't know much about him, but it's kind of like that Adele to wrapped, Ravel Morrison kind of thing of like all the, all the ability, but not the work rate.
00:27:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I've got it.
00:27:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
There.
00:27:11
Connor
And I think because of what we've seen, what a Liverpool player looks like now, especially under, under clop, what it looked like then that was such that almost mattered more than anything
00:27:22
Connor
So it's almost like you got to try and reprogram your brain to think, no, they're still good. Don't worry. But anytime I see him pop up, his you know his his goals or assists or his skills on on socials, he just he looks like the the business. you know He's so technical. Yeah, yeah.
00:27:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
and at 15 million pounds I mean definitely worth the punt right okay let's let's talk contract updates I'm giving you some huge news now Connor it looks nailed on now nailed on you heard it here first that Trent Alexander Arnold Muhammad Salah and Virgil van van Dyck are going to be staying at Anfield it's almost guaranteed now because the new 2025 club calendar is out
00:27:41
Connor
Yeah, absolutely.
00:28:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Trent is February, Mo is March, and Van Dyke is April. So, there you go. it' Surely that's a done deal.
00:28:14
Connor
I, you know what, that's the kind of thing if I was maybe a five years younger, I'd be like, yeah, um I really believe that.
00:28:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think they're five years old in my own calendar.
00:28:22
Connor
Yeah, true. Very true.
00:28:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
If I was five years old, then I would believe that Trent was staying.
00:28:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thanks, mate.
00:28:29
Connor
Yeah.
00:28:29
Connor
Yeah. Yeah. You know what?
00:28:33
Connor
I'm kind of over being the pessimist on the show and I just want it to all work out. we've seen that what you know We've talked about what that that Guardiola extension would do for a club like City that are having there their slump.
00:28:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:28:45
Connor
Imagine what the rollout of those contracts being renewed would do for us.
00:28:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
i so I saw something on Twitter. I saw a tweet. I can't can't claim this as my own. And I wish I remembered the guy that posted this to to give him a shout out because I thought it was brilliant. And he said, look, the Liverpool media team,
00:29:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, say if if we signed if we get these three signed up, they cannot miss this trick, which is pre-Christmas, you know, you you release the video, Christmas tree, there's presents under the tree, three presents, and in comes Mo, Trent, and Van Dyke.
00:29:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
with I'm getting five years old again.
00:29:28
Connor
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:29:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Our challenges are now Christmas presents. but so no but you're right though I mean can you imagine the lift that that would give the the squad for the second half of the season if those three sign up it would just be it's the kind of momentum that could take us to something really special this season but at the same time if if we don't get these guys signing up it could be like the clock effect
00:29:41
Connor
Yeah.
00:29:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
where Klopp announces that he's leaving and you know slowly the kind of season fizzles out. So you know we'll see, but the latest from Paul Joyce, who's really you know quite reliable as a source regarding Szilard's contract extension, he's saying it's more more complicated than the simple remedy of giving him what he wants.

Contract Negotiations and Anecdotes

00:30:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
He says, for Liverpool, it's about the allocation of resources, not a lack of them and the strategy that shapes that. They want to keep their best players while also protecting the club in the long term. What do you make of that, Conor?
00:30:38
Connor
i I think that's absolutely, I mean, it's the kind of thing that fans might kick off about, those you know, the the the solely online fans. and But I think that makes total sense. It makes total sense.
00:30:50
Connor
And I think if you want to look after the club, keeping the best players around matters. What does matter though is is what whether those players can replicate the results they've previously shown in the next two or three years, depending on what the contract is going to be.
00:30:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:31:03
Connor
By the looks of it, Salah could, Van Dyke could, Trent definitely could. But not only are you protecting the club by making them sign the contract or hopefully getting them to sign the contract, not making them, but you're also, you know, you're not protecting the on-field results. You're not only just doing that. You're also, if it doesn't work out and you can sell them on, you're also getting something back. You're protecting yourself. You're protecting the club that way. So I see what they're saying here, but it looks very much like again the pessimist corners coming out it looks a little bit like that's the start of the media spin being like well we can't justify all of them so you know but hey we'll see i did yeah i did yeah i did
00:31:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
well see it but One more um one more um story from Paul Joyce. I don't know, did you see the story about Jurgen Klopp and Antony?
00:31:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's hilarious I mean, apparently back in 2022 when Salah was again going through a contract negotiation, apparently Jurgen Klopp was suggesting that, you know, if if Mo doesn't sign that we go and get Anthony as a replacement.
00:32:11
Connor
I think he needs to come back and suggest the same thing again to make the club sign that contract.
00:32:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm glad that didn't work out.
00:32:16
Connor
you know That's what they need.
00:32:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
okay
00:32:17
Connor
We need we need to offer up as another another insane alternative. We'll go all in on...
00:32:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Games signed up or will sign in?
00:32:25
Connor
Yeah, or we'll sign Dwight MacNail or someone. you know well yeah yeah
00:32:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
